Cobar’s 2025 Seniors Expo was held at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club yesterday. This is the second year the event has been organised and coordinated by Kara O’Hara from Kirinari, who describes herself as an aged care services navigator. Kara said the Expo was a way to bring all available services together in one spot. She attributed her success today to her own stubbornness and to the support she received from her partner and staff.

Trudy Griffiths, who has owned and operated Gumnut Gifts & Homewares for 19 years, spoke about the women in her life who had inspired her and the challenges she faced competing in male dominated sports.

Trudy also proudly spoke about her daughter, Chloe, who is part of a Girls in Motorsport mentoring program.

She said Chloe has aspirations of being a V8 Supercars motor mechanic.

Getting the lay of the land

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler has been out and about in the Cobar Shire this week and on Monday he was getting the lay of the land in Nymagee. Roy spoke with members of the Nymagee Progress Association about several issues including the ongoing absence of police at the local station, the town’s water infrastructure, which is exacerbating the existing water quality issues, and phone and internet coverage and access. “I will be raising each of these issues on their behalf with the relevant government level or department,” Mr Butler said. “Grants were another big topic, or rather, the ability to access funding opportunities. Much needed rain was welcomed Residents around the Cobar Shire have welcomed the much needed rain we had on Sunday night.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, we had 59.6mm of rain in town, while some residents recorded up to 80mm in their backyard gauges and 70.8mm was reported to have fallen on the golf course.

Jayde George reports they had 60mm in the west of the shire at Innesowen near Tilpa.

Trish Haines also reported 60mm landed in their gauge south of Cobar and 22mm was recorded at Canbelego, east of Cobar.

Ros Manns at Gidgee, north west of Cobar, reports a total of 41mm fell in their gauge.

Our hottest day over the past week was Saturday when it reached a top of 35.1.

Sunday, with a top of 29.2 degrees, was our coolest day of the week and the only day this month that has been below the long term average for this time of the year of 30.2 degrees.

It reached a top of 33.6 last Wednesday, it got to 34.5 on Thursday and Friday reached a maximum of 33 degrees.

The forecast is for continued hot weather this week with the Bureau predicting a very hot day on Sunday with 38 degrees, which is almost eight degrees above the average for this time of the year.

We’re headed for a top of 32 today (and possibly get some more rain) and 34 tomorrow with a slight chance of rain.

The forecast for Friday is 36 and 37 degrees is the expected top on Saturday.

Monday should be sunny and 31 degrees.

Virtual healthcare service expanded A new free virtual healthcare service has been expanded to include residents in Western and Far West NSW. Residents will be able to access free and safe virtual care for non-life threatening conditions, right from the comfort of their own home.

This virtual care service will provide care for urgent but non-life threatening illnesses or injuries including: coughs, colds, fevers and flu; respiratory symptoms; vomiting and diarrhoea; and minor infections and rashes.

The service will be available seven days a week for people aged 16 years and older.

Patients can phone the free HealthDirect service and will first speak to a registered nurse who will assess their condition, and if appropriate, refer them to the virtual care service.

The service uses video conferencing technology to connect patients with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, including doctors and nurses, where clinically appropriate.

Virtual care forms part of a broader range of measures to relieve pressure on the state’s busy emergency departments.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler said there is an added challenge of distance in accessing healthcare in this part of the world.

“This service may provide another way for patients to access care safely in the comfort of their own home,” Mr Butler said.

“It should not be meant to replace face to face attention from a medical practitioner, but looks to take some of the pressure off emergency departments and other overstressed sectors of our health workforce.

“It will allow people with relatively minor ailments to seek free medical attention or be provided sound advice on whether to seek further help in person.”

The mothers group is organised and coordinated by Cobar Community Health Child and Family Health nurse Tarra Burke. Tarra runs two groups a year and they meet up one day a month. “I invite all the mums with babies born in the last six months. It’s a networking group to make connections with other mums and bubs the same age,” Tarra said.

Another big win for Golfie Ones & Fives Golfie Ones & Fives had another big win in the local darts competition last Wednesday night, and this time they accounted for RSL 7-2.

Western Grumblebums also had a 7-2 win last week over RSL Dingoes.

In the other matches, the same score margins as the week before were recorded with Golfie Spearchuckers beating Empire Barflies 6-3 and Golfie Dartaholics got the better of Golfie Gophers to eventually win the match 5-4.

RSL Minors had the bye this round.

Two super shots recorded in Rd 2 Two super shots, worth six points each, were recorded in Round 2 of the Fast5 netball competition last Tuesday night at Ward Oval.

Untouchables’ Brianna Watson and Mixed & Matched’s Lauren Urquhart both recorded a super shot which are worth six points when scored in a power play quarter.

The six pointer for Untouchables helped them to a big 50-11 win over Last Minute with Untouchables scoring a massive 26 points in the third quarter when they used their power play option.

That was more than half their final tally!

Watson was picked by the opposition as their Favourite Fiver and Damber Acharya (Last Minute) was the other Favourite Fiver of the game.

Mixed & Matched also scored a good win last week beating Sisters of Mercy 38-6.

Taylah Good (Mixed & Matched) and Kahlie Obray (Sisters of Mercy) earned the Favourite Fivers title.

Peak Golden Nuggets held the upper hand throughout their Round 2 match with Shooting Blanks to finish with a 24-13 win.

Mathew Wang (Shooting Blanks) and Sara Waak (Peak Golden Nuggets) were the match’s Favourite Fivers.

The other two scheduled matches were not played with All Class forfeiting to Rebounders and Fast Fobs forfeited their game to Autobots.

Pennants win

A win and two draws by the Golfie bowls Pennants teams over Baradine at Baradine on Saturday has earned the Cobar team a spot in the final against Bourke.

Michael Sergeant led his side to a four shots victory with Don Roberts’ side having a 21-all draw and David ‘Ooze’ Knight’s side had a 17-all draw.

It was a massive +27 win for Randall Hall’s team (which included David Kershaw and double lead Carmel Smith) in Social Bowls on Sunday.

There was a great turnout for Friday’s Twilight bowls and it may have been that it was greenkeeper, Stewart Simpson’s birthday that brought them as most of the field were fellow staff members.

Simpson teamed up with Karen Daly and newbie bowler Dax Branford to blitz their opposition by +11 to win the night.

Since joining the Senior Mixed Touch competition last season, Guns N Hoses recorded their best performance at last Thursday night’s double-header round.

And that best performance was up against one of the competition’s top teams.

While it wasn’t a win, it was their smallest losing margin to date, with Concrete Cowboys finishing as narrow 4-0 winners.

Pearl Blackburn (Guns N Hoses) shared in the game’s Best & Fairest points with Concrete Cowboys’ Chris Crotty and James Anderson.

After their shock loss last week, Concrete Cowboys were back to being in front on the scoresheet in both of their double-header games.

They won their other match on Thursday night 2-0 against the young Running on Empty side.

B&F points went to Neve Carter (Concrete Cowboys), Ethan Brookman (Running on Empty) and Toby Greenwood (Concrete Cowboys).

Makos also had two wins in last week’s double-header round, beating Phat Athletes 7-3 and Blossoms 6-3. (It was Blossoms first loss of the season.)

Fast Fades finished the night with two wins narrowly beating Rusty Snails 3-2 in their early match and then they got the better of Running on Empty in their late game to win 7 -5.

Feeling at home on the range Two shooters are starting to feel at home on the range at the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club and last week broke their handicaps at the 25m standard event.

Tracey Lawrence shot 424 off pistol and, with her handicap of 196, she finished with a total score of 620 and a new handicap of 158.

Geoff Passfield also earned himself a new handicap after he shot 387 off pistol and, combined with his handicap of 233, finished with a total score of 620 and a new handicap of 192.

Mexted makes a bid for Yabbies One Night Stand award Dave Mexted made a bid for the Setts One Night Stand award last Tuesday at the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club event.

Mexted finished the night with a tally of just 0.51 seconds off his nominated times in three events.

Mexted won the 100m event with the best time of the night, 0.03 seconds off his nominated time.

Mexted then clocked in 4th in the 50m swim with 0.11 seconds off his time, and while he was 9th in the 30m event, he still had a pretty good result with 0.37 seconds off his time.

Murray Harland was just behind with a total of 0.67 seconds for the night and Tom Jones was also in the running with a tally of 0.89.

Jones finished as the runner-up in the 100m swim with 0.20 seconds off his time and Harland was third on 0.41.

Ben Plush was out in front in the 50m swim with 0.03 seconds off his nominated time.

Scott Toomey was just behind on 0.04 and Harland (0.10) was third again.

Bill Fugar won the 30m swim with a time of 0.07 seconds off his nominated time.

Jones was second (0.10) and Plush was third (0.13).

The Brace Relay novelty event was a tough one with Chris Powell and Andrew Allcock, on 2.28 seconds, the closest pair to their nominated time.

Harland and John Carswell (2.71) were second and Toomey and Mexted were third.

Yellow just got the better of the Green Pickles to win 7-6 in their Round 5 game of the Senior (13-16 years) touch competition last week at Ward Oval.

For the Pickles, Jack Dunn crossed twice in the second half and Tom scored his third try of the match but it just wasn’t enough to clinch the win.

Rhylee, Jack and Will Oborn (Yellow) shared in the referee’s Best & Fairest points.

The other Seniors game was also close with Blue Bangers finishing as 10-8 winners over Pink.

Rhylee Patterson led the scoring with three tries for Blue Bangers with team mates Alfie Toomey, Alora Deppeler and Jackson Muldoon responsible for their other tries.

In reply, Kai McCosker (2), Abbey Farrell, Josh Francisco and Montanna Grentell scored Pink’s points.

Rhylee, Alfie and Rowdy Barton (Blue Bangers) earned B&F points.

The continued dry conditions are having a detrimental effect on the fairways so golfers took on the predicted weather forecast of rain on Sunday, willing to head back to the 19th if necessary. No significant downpours however interrupted the Stableford round.

Narelle Kriz had 32 points for the win while Sally Bannister was stuck on 31 points for the second time in the week.

Susan Goonrey, with 28 points, was third after surviving a three-way countback.

Closest to the flag on the 8th hole were Sally Bannister, Brenda Fugar and Ann Dunn.

There were five players in last Wednesday’s Stableford with Susan Goonrey the winner after having 32 points. Sally Bannister finished in second spot with 31 points and also won the only Nearest the Pin prize on the 7th hole.

Today is another Stableford game with the first Ladies Golf monthly meeting to follow.

A variation Stableford will be played on Saturday and is a ‘draw for partner’ day.
