Call to restore government funding

The NSW Country Mayors Association (CMA) has called for the Australian Government and Opposition to commit to the restoration of Commonwealth funding for Local Government.

“Federal Governments of all persuasions have slowly but surely eroded the funding that is provided to Local Government,” NSW CMA chairman Mayor Rick Firman OAM said.

“It is alarming that the annual Financial Assistance Grants (FAGs) provided to Local Government by the Federal Government have decreased from one per cent of Commonwealth taxation revenue in 1996 to just 0.5 per cent today.”

Mayor Firman said falling revenue was a major contributing factor to the financial sustainability challenges that many councils in rural and regional NSW currently face.

More than 2,500 left without power More than 2,500 Essential Energy electricity customers in Cobar were impacted by severe storms that swept across the western area on Sunday night.

The damaging storms brought strong winds and hail causing power outages for more than 13,000 customers across the Upper Western, Western Plains and parts of Central West NSW, including Cobar, Bourke, Narromine, Nevertire, Nyngan, Trangie, Warren and surrounding areas.

An Essential Energy spokesperson said the storms impacted the high voltage electricity network between Narromine and Dubbo and between Trangie and Narromine.

“One outage impacted more than 8,600 customers, including more than 2,500 in Cobar, at approximately 7.50pm with power restored to most customers by around 1.50am this morning,” the spokesperson said on Monday.

As at 8am on Monday, around 330 customers still were without power.

Rain and hail The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 12.6mm of rain in Cobar yesterday which was also accompanied by a hailstorm.

Higher rainfall, strong winds and hailstones the size of golf balls were also recorded in the north west and also southern parts of the shire.

Up until yesterday we’d received 39.4mm of rain this month and, with the tropical conditions set to continue (the Bureau was predicting we’d have another late thunderstorm yesterday and more rain is forecast for Friday), we could exceed the average for the month, which is 42.4mm.

Friday was our only dry day last week.

The Bureau recorded 9.8mm of rain up until 9am on Wednesday, 13.6 on Thursday, 0.4mm on Saturday, 0.2mm on Sunday, 2.8mm on Monday and 12.6mm up to 9am yesterday.

The unsettled conditions have included some warm and steamy days with Friday our hottest day at 39.2 degrees.

It got to a top of 36.2 degrees on Wednesday, 35.6 on Thursday, 33.7 was the top on Saturday, 36.9 was the maximum on Sunday and Monday was cooler with 33.9.

The nights have also been staying warm with the thermometer only dipping below 20 degrees once in the past week with Monday night/Tuesday morning our coolest overnight temperature at 19.5 degrees.

The forecast is for more warm days this week. Today we can expect 37 degrees, and again tomorrow (along with a chance of a shower). Friday’s predicted top is 32 (with a shower or two), 28 is expected on Saturday and 24 is the forecast for Sunday.

A guided tour of preschool

Cobar Preschool held an open day at the school on Friday prior to the school re-opening for the new year on Monday. Pictured are five year old Clair Thompson and her three year old brother James with their carer, Jo Betts and Cobar Preschool coordinator, Kristi Martin. Clair, who attended preschool last year and has headed off to Kinder this week, was giving James a guided tour. James will be doing one day a week at Cobar Preschool (the school is at capacity with 64 children, mostly four year olds), and will also attend Nyngan Preschool one day a week (travelling with his mum and dad to Nyngan each week when they work at the Nyngan Dental Surgery).

The Cobar Services Club will be hosting a red-hot, live performance of Flamenco for Everybody as it travels through the Riverina and Outback NSW on its regional tour.

The workshops, one of which was held in Cobar, were a great opportunity to inform landholders how they could get the most out of eID technologies for their farm businesses as well as provide information on the tag-free pathway for harvested rangeland goats.

The workshops, held in Cobar, Broken Hill and Anabranch (near Wentworth) and were all well attended.

Western LLS Senior Biosecurity Officer – eID, Lynda Watson said the Cobar workshop was the best attended with 50 producers present, while 19 producers attended Broken Hill and 25 attended the workshop at Anabranch.

Ms Watson said the workshops, which provided eID information, practical demonstrations and tips and tricks, were pre-planned as part of the eID scheme rollout.

These three workshops follow on from another five workshops that were held in various western area locations at the end of last year.

“The workshops have been a great way to engage with landholders and stakeholders about the transition to eID and we’ve been pleased with the strong interest,” Ms Watson said.

“The discussions and feedback at the three events was positive, with landholders pleased to hear about the support available, such as the eID Tag Discount Program.

Fire a contributor to truck roll over Police investigations into last week’s truck roll over and fire have revealed the origin of the fire came from the truck’s trailer.

Around 2pm on Monday February 3, the 67 year old driver of the truck noticed his rear trailer had caught alight.

The driver attempted to stop abruptly when the vehicle tipped onto its side beyond the western kerb alignment.

Police, the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW attended the scene 32km south of Cobar on the Kidman Way. The fire was contained.

The driver provided a negative result to alcohol and sustained minor injuries from the crash.

Looking for romance this Valentine’s Day?

Loved-up couples looking for something extra special to do this Valentine’s Day can enjoy the experience of being hypnotized together.

Comedy hypnotist Rob Young returns to the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club this Friday night, Valentine’s Day, and is looking for couples (of all ages) to become the stars of his show.

When Rob visited Cobar last February, he convinced 12 local residents to “go under his power”. He then got them to do some outrageous things, including searching the room looking for Viagra!

Rob’s had all different types of personalities appear in his comedy shows. He said it’s the people who don’t believe in hypnosis or who are normally very shy, that tend to end up becoming the stars of the show.

“There’s a part of them that wants to do it, but their conscious mind gets in the way of allowing themselves to do it,” Rob explained.

“We bypass that and get right into their personality and amplify it.”

He said hypnosis removes inhibitions but, if people feel it will embarrass them, their mind will still choose not to do what he suggests.

“I also never ask them to do anything that will put them in danger because their mind will always protect them,” he said.

Rob also said people’s strong beliefs can also withstand hypnosis.

“For example, if I suggested they were going to smoke the world’s biggest joint, occasionally I’ll get someone who declines and hands on the ‘joint’ to the next person.

“And if you ask them why they didn’t smoke it, it’s because they don’t smoke or they don’t want to risk it as they get drug tested at work!”

Rob said in general his shows appeal to audiences over 18.

He said there’s “nothing too risqué” but his skits work better with an adult audience, such as when he suggests his volunteers have the power to see someone naked or to get the guy who loses his dog to yell out for Viagra!

“Previously my hypnotherapy was my main source of income but then the comedy shows have taken off, and I’m doing shows pretty much every weekend” Rob said.

Cobar club hosts carnival

The Cobar Swimming Club had a strong team of swimmers (pictured above in their new club shirts) for the club’s now annual swimming carnival at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Sunday. The Cobar club hosted swimmers from Nyngan, Warren, Dubbo and Mudgee for a 52 event program.

The statistics from the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s swimming Club event last week were repeated over and over.

From a field of 18 swimmers, two swam spot on to their nominated times while four others recorded 0.03 seconds off their nominated times.

Tom Jones recorded the first 0.00 time of the night to win the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim while Paul Swainston clocked 0.03 seconds off his nominated time which earned him second place.

Dave Mexted finished back in third place with 0.29 seconds off his nominated time.

James Daymond recorded the second spot on swim of the night to take out the 50m event.

There was a three-way tie for second place with Scott Toomey, John Carswell and Kevin ‘Rusty’ Mitchell all finishing within (you guessed it), 0.03 seconds of their nominated times.

The last of the 0.03 times of the night was recorded again by Swainston and it was enough to win him the 100m event.

Jay Egan was second with 0.12 seconds off his nominated time and Matt Harland was third on 0.41.

Daymond teamed up with Kyle Roberts to win the Brace Relay novelty event with the pair finishing within 0.04 seconds of their nominated time.

Murray Harland and Bob Clark were second (1.37) and Jones and Carswell were third with 1.40 seconds off their nominated time.

Swainston’s two 0.03 times, along with a 0.34 result in his 50m swim, gained him entry as a finalist for the Setts One Night Stand award, which is calculated on a swimmer’s lowest combined times in one night.

All four of the first round games of the new Open Mixed Touch competition on Thursday night at Ward Oval were onesided.

And all four had similar margins with 10-1, 10-3, 10-2 and 11-2 the game scores.

Last year’s A Grade competition winners, the Concrete Cowboys, started the new season off with a 10-1 win over last year’s B Grade winners, Fast Fades.

Tyler Coughlan crossed twice for the Cowboys with Ben Griffiths, Bridgette Negfeldt, Rori Urquhart, Ashley Davies and Neve Carter scoring a try each. (Female tries are worth double points.)

Sam Best was the only Fast Fades player able to penetrate the Cowboys’ defence and was responsible for his side’s one point for the match.

Fast Fades’ siblings, Maddy Bruce and Damon Bruce, shared in the referee’s Best & Fairest points along with Cowboys’ Ashley Davies.

Makos, who finished third in A Grade last year, easily accounted for their third placed B Grade counterparts, Rusty Snails, 10-3.

Bactrians are back One of the areas the Cobar Rugby Union Club has pursued over the past 12 months with Western Plains Rugby Union Zone has been the introduction into competition proper of women’s tackle, subsequent to the success of the Australian women’s Sevens team on the international rugby stage.

For the past few seasons, the Cobar’s men’s team, the Camels, has struggled to finish out the season for a variety of reasons.

Camels club president Peter Payne has therefore taken on board the Zone’s decision to promote full on tackle rugby for women with a series of gala days throughout the zone.

Dates for these gala days are about to be announced and Payne has confirmed the club will be throwing all of its available resources at a women’s team in 2025 to equip them with the confidence and experience to enter the competition in 2026.

Yabbies dominate at AIF Western Districts Carnival The Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club dominated the AIF Western District Swimming Carnival at Condobolin on Sunday.

The Yabbies won nine out of the 16 events contested, including the first six events of the day, with Dave Mexted the Yabbies’ best individual performer with six wins from the carnival.

John Carswell started the day off on the right foot with a win in the 50 metres Presidents Sealed Handicap event.

Carswell had the best time of 1.19 seconds off his nominated time.

Mexted backed that up with a win in Event 2, the 30 metres RSL Handicap, when he tied with Tom Gray from Dubbo.

Both finished within 0.06 seconds of their nominated times.

Bill Fugar grabbed first place in the third event, the 30 metres Open Handicap, with 0.37 seconds off his nominated time.

Mexted won the next event, the 50 metres RSL Handicap, when he finished within 0.19 seconds of his time.

The Yabbies claimed first and third places in the 50 metres Open Handicap with Murray Harland the winner on 0.34 and Shane Josephson was third (0.84).

Mexted recorded his third win of day in the 50 metres RSL Championship (Under 50 years) event.

Greg Martin finished in second place in the 50 metres RSL Championship (50-64 years) swim and Scott Toomey was second in the 50 metres Open individual Sprint Scratch race.

Cobar filled the minor places in the 100 metres Open Handicap event with Carswell second on 0.90 and Greg Dimond was third with 1.94.

Cobar won two of the five relay events and two Cobar swimmers joined two Dubbo swimmers to win another.

The Yabbies won the 4x50 metres Open Scratch Relay with Harland, Fugar, Scott Toomey and Jason Toomey finishing with a time of 2min 18.62sec.

Their other relay win came in the 6x50 metres Sealed Handicap Relay (with teams required to have a minimum of one RSL swimmer).

Mexted was Cobar’s RSL swimmer and he teamed up with John Claus, Josh Mainey, Stephen Clark, Josephson and Dimond to claim the win with 3.22 seconds off their nominated time.

Two shooters are sporting new handicaps A large field of 12 shooters turned out for the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s 25m standard event on Sunday.

Two shooters broke their handicaps.

Geoff Passfield earned himself a new handicap of 208 when he shot 369 off pistol and, with his old handicap of 233, he finished with a total score of 602.

Tracey Lawrence is also sporting a new handicap.

She shot 382 off pistol and, with her handicap of 218, finished with a total score of 600 and a new handicap of 196.

Cowboys head to Brewery Shield grand final

The Cobar Cowboys representative cricket team are headed to the Brewery Shield grand final this Sunday after they accounted for Bourke in the semi final at Ward Oval on Sunday. Cobar won the toss and elected to bat first. After only making 122 runs on a tricky wicket, it was left up to the Cobar bowlers to turn the game around—and they did!
