Cobar has wrapped up a big year with its biggest Christmas street parade ever on Friday night. The Cobar Business Association’s annual Gala Shopping Night was supported by the local mines, Cobar Shire Council, emergency services, various community and sporting groups as well as local businesses. See Page 2 for a report on the event.

Christmas carols fun

The Thompson family (Caroline, James, Claire, Charlie and Henry) caught up with friends, Pearl Toomey and Nestor Linn, at the Churches of Cobar Carols in the Park (which was moved to the Cobar Youth & Community Centre) on Sunday. This year’s event attracted a big crowd to hear the Carols’ own rock band and choir along with performances by the Cobar Town Band, local schools, dance and music groups and Santa also paid a visit.

Cobar Business Association’s Christmas Street Parade on Friday night has been labelled by locals as Cobar’s best parade ever!

At an estimated 1.5km in length, with more than 50 vehicles and approximately 240 people on floats, in vehicles and on foot, we’d have to agree that it was indeed Cobar’s best street parade ever!

Parade organiser Demi Smith said there had been a great response from the community this year with six emergency service groups, nine businesses and five community groups all taking part.

Santa once again had the honour of leading the parade on the Fire & Rescue NSW Cobar Station 256’s restored Garford Pumper fire engine. The ‘main man’ was escorted by a wide variety of floats and vehicles including mine vehicles, various council plant (including the garbage truck), Ken Dunne’s 1907 Kiblinger Motor Buggy, a fleet of emergency service vehicles, a troupe of Chinese Lunar Lions, an assembly of Australia Post delivery vans, a Santa doing circle work on a ride-on lawn mower and Sullivan’s groovy Grinch dancing his way down the street, just to name a few.

MAC/CSA Mine’s loader (decorated and driven by the GM) and Council’s fully decked out Christmas grader tied for Best Float. Cobar Junior Rugby League Club won the ‘Margaret’s Choice’ trophy as the best community spirit entry.

The crowd was entertained by the Lunar Lions acrobats, along with local singers, dancers and ukulele players.

Bucket loads of rain over the week Cobar, along with a number of other areas across the eastern states, has had bucket loads of rain with some Cobar Shire residents reporting up to 181.5mm of rain over the past week.

Some of the highest rainfall was recorded in the east of the shire at Canbelego with Kylie Tonissen receiving 181.5mm in their rain gauge at Booroomugga station.

To the west, Bill Rogers recorded 130mm at Broadmeadows.

Belinda Blake reported 108mm at Merrylands while 55mm of rain was recorded at Maryvale in the north west of the shire.

At Berangabah in the south west, the Sinclairs had 103mm and Gary Wells recorded 100mm at Windara (to the north east).

Sarah Johnson reported 97mm at Gilgunnia (in the north) and Cains also had 97mm at Booroondarra, north west of Cobar.

Towards Louth, the Le Lievres recorded 79.25mm of rain at Yathonga.

In town the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 39.6mm while 37.8mm fell in the Bureau’s Cobar Airport gauge and 46mm was measured on the second tee on Cobar’s golf course.

According to the Bureau, Cobar has already had more rain this month (60.6mm) than the whole month of December 2023 when we only received 6.4mm.

Sunny days are forecast for the week ahead with the thermometer predicted to rise each day with a top of 33 expected today, 34 tomorrow, 37 on Friday, 38 is predicted for Saturday, 39 should be the top on Sunday and a very hot 41 degrees is predicted for Monday.

CSA keen to help local groups

Cobar Brennan Centre committee’s secretary, Samantha Smith, was over the moon on Monday after receiving a $7,920 donation from MAC Copper Limited (formerly Metals Acquisition Corp) CSA Mine general manager Robert Walker. The donation will cover the centre’s grounds maintenance and landscaping costs for the coming year. MAC Copper has this week also joined with local business owners Anni van der Westhuizen and Andre Van Wyk to make donations to the Lilliane Brady Village (for Christmas decorations and courtyard renovations) and CatholicCare to purchase presents for 26 foster children in Cobar. Mr Walker encouraged any local not-for-profit groups looking for financial support to apply through the mine’s grants program.

CSA Mine’s senior training advisor Craig Jones said the 12 students participated very well in all training courses, including Site Induction, Working at Heights, Confined Spaces and First Aid. Mr Jones said students also benefited from a workshop where staff from each department onsite gave a presentation on their job roles and the various roles in their departments.

“We finished this workshop with a presentation on interview skills.

“The growth of the students over the six weeks was amazing,” Mr Jones said.

“They went from shy kids to young adults.”

Police catch up with the thief

Police caught up with a thief who recently stole a piece of sporting memorabilia from the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.

Staff at the club noticed a COHOES rugby league football was missing from their trophy hallway last Wednesday.

After checking their CCTV footage from the previous day, they reported the theft to Cobar Police.

Following an investigation, a 25 year old Queensland man (who was working as a contractor at a local mine), was issued with a Criminal Infringement notice for stealing, and the ball was returned to the club.

Cobar experiences strongest growth Cobar has experienced the strongest growth in residential land values across regional New South Wales according to a new analysis from the NSW Valuer General.

The NSW Valuer General has finalised land values for every parcel of land across NSW and reports that land values have risen by almost $9 billion.

The land values reflect the value of land only, as at July 1, 2024.

Sally Dale, Valuer General of NSW said regional NSW has experienced a slight increase in land values, with continued demand for property and constrained supply.

The total land value for regional NSW experienced a combined increase of 2.7 per cent across all property types from $329 billion to $338 billion between July 2023 and July 2024.

Ms Dale said property sales are the most important factor valuers consider when determining land values.

Residential land values across regional NSW saw a 2.7 per cent increase on average with Cobar experiencing the strongest growth at 45.4 per cent.

Ms Dale attributed Cobar’s growth as being driven by a strong performing economy, a thriving local minerals and critical minerals mining sector and support from the visitor economy.

Gilgandra (37.6 per cent), Balranald (35.9 per cent) and Bogan (29.3 per cent) also saw very strong increases. Bland (-6.7 per cent), Murray River (-3.0 per cent) and Broken Hill (-2.4 cent) experienced the biggest decreases in residential land values.

“The state’s constrained housing supply and resulting population shifts continue to support increases in residential land values across western NSW as people look for more affordable and available housing,” Ms Dale said Regional industrial land values experienced the highest growth across property categories, with a 9.9 per cent average increase.

Warrumbungle (92.4 per cent) saw the largest increase in industrial land values, as well as Greater Hume (61 per cent) and Tamworth Regional (41.5 per cent).

The Narrabri (-20.8 per cent) local government area saw the biggest decrease in industrial land values, driven predominately by reduced demand, with the completion of the Inland Rail construction stage and the announcement that the Narrabri Special Activation Precinct would not proceed in late 2023 being significant contributors.

Singleton also saw a decrease (-4.5 per cent), which is largely attributable to some uncertainty in the coal related mining sector.

Sheep and goat eID changes from January 2025 NSW is currently transitioning to mandatory individual electronic identification for sheep and goats.

Individual electronic identification (eID) for sheep and goats is an enhancement to the existing mob-based system as part of the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS).

Local Land Services is reminding anyone who moves or sells lambs or kids born in 2025 onwards, they will need an eID device before they leave the property.

From next month, saleyards will also have their infrastructure upgrades ready to go to accommodate animals with eID. Stock owners can visit the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development eID website to find resources that can assist them in making changes to their operation.

The resources include tailored online training, frequently asked questions, a decision tree to walk you through whether you require other eID equipment, information about upcoming events and more.

Anyone who has questions about the upcoming switch to sheep and goat eID, is encouraged to contact the Department of Primary Industries or a Local Land Services Senior Biosecurity Officer.

A formal farewell

Cobar Public School’s Year 6 class were formally farewelled last Wednesday night with a function for students, parents and teachers at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.

The school captains and vice captains hosted the evening with principal Jonathan Harvey, assistant principal Joelle Deppeler and Year 6 teacher Cat Sharp all making speeches. The class of 42 were presented with graduation certificates and their portfolios and the students also took part in a surprise Flashmob dance.

Local Govt funding capabilities The Country Mayors Association of NSW (CMA) has welcomed the release of the NSW Legislative Council Standing Committee report on the ability of Local Government to fund infrastructure and services.

CMA Chairman and Temora Shire Mayor Rick Firman OAM said financial sustainability is consistently a top priority concern of rural and regional councils in NSW. “Our submission to this inquiry comprehensively covered the broad range of barriers to financial sustainability in rural and regional councils in NSW,” Cr Firman said.

“From our initial reading of the report and recommendations, the CMA is certainly encouraged,” he said.

The inquiry received 129 submissions and held 10 public hearings, half of which were in regional locations.

“It appears that the Standing Committee Chair the Hon. Emily Suvaal and her fellow members have obviously listened to, read and absorbed the testimonies presented to them,” Cr Firman said.

“The 17 recommendations that the Standing Committee have determined, on the surface, reflect what the CMA and countless others have advocated for consistently.

“It is particularly encouraging for the CMA to see a proposed redesigning of our Local Government rating system is being referred to the NSW Government,” Cr Firman said.

The Committee also recommended the NSW Government advocate to the Commonwealth Government to increase its Financial Assistance Grants from 0.5 per cent to one per cent of Commonwealth taxation revenue (which it was originally) and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) Act 1997 be amended so that RFS assets are rested in the RFS.

Stolen vehicle

Cobar Police are appealing for any information regarding the theft of a vehicle in Cobar last week.

A white 2013 Toyota Hilux ute (registration number DTQ14W) was stolen from a residence in Green Street sometime between Saturday November 30 and Tuesday December 3.

Anyone with information regarding this vehicle is asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.

Some Christmas cheer

Wild dog baiting program is now completed

Western Local Land Services (Western LLS) is hailing their 2024 spring wild dog baiting program a success.

Over the program, more than 129,000 baits were distributed through aerial and ground baiting activities, demonstrating the scale of the program.

As part of their aerial baiting activities 135 properties were involved with 57,110 baits distributed over 5,711km of bait lines (at 10 baits per km).

A total of 244 properties participated in the ground baiting program with 20 pest management groups supporting the distribution of 72,257 baits over an area of 6,168,048 hectares.

While the spring 2024 program was only recently completed, Western LLS advise planning is already underway for their next coordinated program which will occur in autumn 2025.

For more information about this program or wild dog management, landholders may contact their LLS biosecurity officer.

Golfers give it away

The Inter Mine Golf Challenge committee has donated the proceeds of their 2024 golf charity day to nine groups. Blue Bulls charge to a big win

Blue Bulls scored a good win in the final round of the Senior Touch (13-16 years) competition beating Pink Kinis by seven points on Thursday.

The Bulls led 5-3 at the break before they put their foot down in the second half and ran away to record a 12-5 win.

Rhylee Patterson’s four tries accounted for eight points of the Blue Bulls’ tally (female tries are worth double points) with Parker Cryer adding three points with his three tries and Jaxon Burke also crossed for a try for the Bulls.

Pink Kinis’ try scorers were Sosie Barton, Evan Wilson, Jackson Muldoon and Riley Bruce.

Yellow Cheese Balls did a big 19-3 demolition job on Green Machine in their match last week.

Rhylee Jeffery (5), Montana Grentell (3) and Josh Francisco (3) went on a try scoring spree for the Cheese Balls to steer them to their big win.

Green Machine’s points came from tries to Ashton Dietrich (2) and Aiden Swan.

In the Juniors 9-12 years competition, Red Cherries just got the better of Yellow Bananas to win, 9-8.

Bria-June Brookman led the scoring for Red Cherries with three touchdowns.

Team mates Alfie Toomey, Austin Kane and Tom Preisig also crossed for a try each.

The Bananas’ points came from tries to: Eligh Ritter (3), Ella Armstrong, Keelan Atuau, Thomas Knight and Jason Cleary.

In the other scheduled Juniors game, Blue Takis won on a forfeit from Orangutans.

Bandits unbeaten Golfie’s greens were chocker block full Backdoor Bandits came out on top against Howies Hombres by 10 runs in Friday night’s Twenty/20 cricket match.

The Bandits posted a total of 3/132 from their 20 overs and, despite a late surge from Howies Hombres, the Bandits’ bowlers successfully defended the total, limiting the Hombres to 7/122.

Early wickets threatened to derail the Bandits’ innings, but Jayden Potts was again the standout leading the way with a matchwinning 72. His steady knock laid the foundation for the Bandits’ total. Beigh Hillier, 27 not out, and James Anderson, 12 not out, provided important support in the latter stages, ensuring the team finished strongly.

The Hombres bowlers struggled to find wickets throughout the innings but tight bowling from Graham Harbison (1/4), Nicola Harbison (0/4) and Aravinth Naguleswarampillai (0/7) helped contain the Bandits and limit scoring opportunities.

Chasing 133, the Hombres had a strong start, with Shaun Doherty blasting 19 off nine balls. However, regular wickets put pressure on their chase. Naduka Gunawardana topscored with 34, but the middle order faltered.

Lakshmi Maddipati (12) and Jake Harbison (31) tried to keep the chase alive but fell short.

The Hombres finished at 7/122, just 10 runs behind the Bandits.
