New ride service to fill taxi gap

Following the closure of Cobar’s only remaining taxi service last month, residents have had to find alternative transportation.

LiveBetter’s community transport service, operating limited hours four days a week, has been able to only partially fill that gap.

Patrick and Trish Bourke operated Cobar Taxi Services for nearly six years and after several unsuccessful attempts over the past year to sell the business, appealed for someone to provide a “taxi-like” service to Cobar.

Local Jamie McMurray was concerned there would no longer be a taxi operating in town and decided to set up a transport booking service.

Jamie bought Patrick’s old taxi vehicle and has stripped it down.

“It’s no longer a taxi, it’s a booking service.

“We can still do “taxi” runs around town, but it’s more like an Uber service,” Jamie told The Cobar Weekly.

“We’ll be up and running from Friday doing town runs, and to the mines and airport.

“Some people used to use the taxi service for school runs, so we can do that too when school restarts,” Jamie said.

“There is no meter and fares are similar to what the taxi fares were.

“Running times are to be confirmed but we will most likely run until late,” Jamie said.

Scholarship to be set up to honour a past president A minute’s silence was observed at the Country Women’s Association (CWA) Cobar Branch annual general meeting on Saturday in honour of a past president, Nona Spinks.

Mrs Spinks recently passed away in Armidale at the age of 97 and a half.

To honour her memory, a donation was made to the Cobar branch by a family member and it was suggested at the meeting that the donation be used to set up a school scholarship in her name.

In her outgoing president’s report, Rebecca Howard said it had been an honour to have served in the role for the past 12 months.

Ms Howard said the role had given her the opportunity to learn some leadership skills.

“A lot of wonderful women have sat in this seat before me and I had big shoes to fill,” Ms Howard said.

“I learnt a lot in this role, and learnt more about the organisation as a whole and where we fit in.”

Over the past year, the branch reported wonderful sales from a very successful stall at the Cobar Show which, along with other fundraising, donations and rent on the CWA flat, helped to provide a good financial outcome.

Members also attended the Far Western Group and State conferences.

Local muso joins ‘Outback Tour’ Local muso Baeden Faint, along with Megan Woods from Orange and Liquid Culture from Bathurst, have been chosen from hundreds of applicants to take their songs and stories on an ‘Outback Tour’.

They make up a triple bill of country and psychedelic rock on the ‘Outback Tour’ curated by MusicNSW. Their first show is tonight at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club with gigs also planned for Wilcannia and Broken Hill.

Original artists based in regional NSW were invited to apply for the regional touring opportunity, which is in its second year and led

by MusicNSW’s Regional team.

Supported by Create NSW, MusicNSW is working across the state to increase contemporary music touring, expand artists and industry networks, and build on existing industry knowledge in regional NSW. MusicNSW Regional Manager Ali Buckley said it was fantastic to have such an incredible collection of artists from across regional NSW join these tours, now in their second year.

The tours offer artists the opportunity to build new audiences, develop industry relationships and hone their touring skills with support from the MusicNSW team.

Baeden Faint draws his inspiration from artists like Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers and Colter Wall, his music is raw and honest.

Police are appealing for information following an assault at the Cobar Rodeo on Saturday.

About 5pm on Saturday emergency services were called to the rodeo event held at the Dalton Park Horse Sports Complex on Louth Road, following reports two men were involved in a fight.

Officers attached to Central North Police District were told the men had an argument before a 38-year-old man was punched in the face.

The injured man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Cobar District Hospital with a suspected broken jaw.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with footage of the assault to contact Cobar police or Crime Stoppers.

Peel Mining has reported the presence of strong copper, gold and silver supergene and oxide mineralization from recent drilling assays at its Wagga Tank deposit 130km south of Cobar.

Peel has recently completed 15 reverse circulation drill holes for a total of 2,248 metres to target potential supergene/oxide gold and

copper mineralization.

Peel’s technical director Rob Tyson said the results revealed the primary objective of the drill program.

“This mineralization sits above and adjacent to the current Wagga Tank mineral resource pointing to a robust, near-surface growth opportunity for the deposit,” Mr Tyson said.

“Follow-up drill planning is underway and is anticipated to take place later this quarter.”

ANNIVERSARY

Expression of Interest Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management OzArk Environment & Heritage has been engaged by APA (the proponent) to complete an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment Report (ACHAR) for a proposed modification (Modification 8) to the Moomba to Wilton Pipeline (MWP).

The proposed modification will involve construction of temporary camps along Section 3, 5 and 6 of the MWP in NSW. Two proposed temporary camps (S3-1 and S3-2) may require impacts to Aboriginal cultural heritage. S3-1 will be in Lot 1 DP601579 and S3-2 will be in Lot 1 DP752785, near White Cliffs in the Unincorporated Far West Region.

Cobar Yabbies hit the water for the first time this season The Cobar Yabbies hit the water on Tuesday night for the first time this season and were met with a pleasant 22 degrees Celsius water temperature.

There was a field of 11 for the first night of the 2024/2025 competition, including a new member, Tim Cooke, to contest 30m, 50m and 100m handicapped events along with a Brace Relay novelty event.

Scott Toomey and Murray Harland claimed the first win of the season when they both swam within 0.03 seconds of their nominated times in the 30 metres handicapped freestyle event.

Stephen Clark finished third with 0.12 seconds off his nominated time.

In the 50 metres swim, John Claus finished out well in front with a time of 0.06 seconds off his nominated time.

Matt Harland was well behind in second place with 0.44 and Murray Harland claimed third place with 0.47 seconds off his nominated time.

Jason Toomey won the 100 metres event with a time of 0.59 seconds off his nominated time with Clark finishing second on 0.72 and Paul Swainston was just off the pace with 0.78 seconds off his nominated time for third place.

Claus got some extra exercise for the night when he was teamed up twice in the Brace Relay event with two different partners (as there was an odd number of swimmers).

After a few warm days, a group of 11 Yabbies (two more arrived after this photo was Claus finished first with team mate Scott taken) took their first dip of the Cobar Senior Men’s Swimming Club 2024/2025 season Toomey with the pair completing the butterfly/side stroke swim across the pool and back in 22 degree water at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Tuesday night. within 0.88 seconds of their nominated time.

Claus also finished second with his other team mate, Matt Harland.

They finished within 2.84 seconds of their nominated time.

Back in third place were Clark and Shane Josephson on 3.54.

A win for Wap

Local horse trainer and owner, Wayne ‘Wap’ Prisk had a win at the Mungery Amateur Picnic Race meeting on Sunday.

The track was good and the weather was fine for the 32 starters of the six race program.

Mr Pointer ($4.40) ridden by Narrominebased jockey Ricky Blewitt led throughout to win the feature sprint, the 1,000 metres Don Barling Memorial Trophy Handicap.

Mr Pointer held off the winner of 19 races and placed 43 times from 155 starts, the gallant 12 year old Billy Bent Ear, trained

by Connie Greig, by half a length.

Another horse from Prisk’s stable, Parnassus, ridden by Zara Lewis, placed second in the 1,200m Class B Handicap.

Lewis was also onboard A Tender Lady, in Race 3, the 1,000m Class B handicap, and steered her to a third place finish.

Also trained by Prisk, Banjo Shark (Blewitt) was 5th in Race 1, the 800m Class 3 Trophy Handicap; Borlotti finished 6th and Dancing in the Sky (which won the feature race at Cobar in August) ran 7th in the 1,750m Mungery Cup. A big weekend of golf in men’s competition

It was a big weekend of golf with good fields turning up over the four days of the men’s competition.

There were 10 players on Wednesday, which was a good field for the mid-week competition.

Michael Howell won the day with 35 points, beating John Carlaw and Greg Clark on 33.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won on the 7th and 8th holes by Travis Buckman, who is fast becoming a mid-week specialist.

On Saturday, the Monthly Medal was up for grabs.

Ted Smith, a “ring-in” with a 32 handicap, won the day by scoring 43 points.

Greg Clark came second with 41 points.

Corin Ah’See seldom has a bad day and he came third with 39 points.

Brien Obray and Mark Fraser were fourth and fifth with 37 and 36 respectively.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won on the 3rd hole by Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence, 7th - Brian Russ, 8th – Mark Martin and the 15th was won by Bian Smith.

Sunday’s game was a Four-Ball-Worst-Ball competition in which 10 players (five teams) took part.

Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence and John Carlaw came first with 31 points, followed by Brian Russ and Travis Buckman on 26.

Mark Fraser and Stewart Fraser finished third with 23 points.

The best individual score was recorded by Alec Fraser with a good 38 and ‘Ding’ was second with 37.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Peter Brien on the 3rd and 8th holes with Brian Russ winning the 7th and Owen Presnell claimed the 15th.

The Captain’s Trophy was contested on Monday and Greg Clark followed his good score from Saturday with another good score, a net 68, to claim the win.

John Carlaw also had 68, but lost on a count-back.

Bian Smith had a 70 and Ray Yench 73.

Nearest the Pins were recorded by Scott Mayne on the 3rd hole, Brian Russ (7th) and Greg Clark won his favourite, the 8th hole.

‘Clarkie’ has been in the golfing wilderness for the last few years but his scores over the weekend indicate he might be returning to the “glory days” of 2020.

That was when Covid was at its height, and he carried all before him and was unstoppable, scoring two hole-in-ones in the same year – on the 8th hole of course.

He will probably lose a couple of strokes which is not ideal leading up to the NSW Sand Greens (if he plays) or the Cobar Open which is on in a few weeks.

A Par event is scheduled for Saturday, although a lot of players will be away in Nyngan for the NSW Sand Green Championships.

Shooting success at State

Competing at the NSW Clay Target Association’s State Championships carnival at Wagga Wagga over the weekend were Cobar Clay Target Club’s Aiden Barraclough and Nicholas Wells (Darran Wells’ son from the Cessnock Gun Club). Aiden finished as the B Grade Double Barrel Champion and represented the Western Zone in the Zone Shoot where they finished 4th. Nicholas was the C Grade Double Barrel Champion and finished 3rd in the C Grade Single Barrel event. Cobar’s Darcy Manns also competed at the carnival in the Open Men’s Junior division and was part of the Junior Western Zone team. Captain’s team comes out on top

The Cobar Lady Golfers played their annual Captain versus Presidents Day on Saturday with Captain Geraldine Francisco’s team coming out on top.

The Captain’s team finished with a combined net score of 532 compared to President Narelle Kriz’s team score of 537 net.

Vice captain Julie Livingston had the best individual score of the day, 67 net, followed

by Glenda Peebles on a countback from Jannine Wilkin (both 71 net).

Fran Samios was next best with 72 net, Fay Hardwick had 74 net and Geraldine Francisco finished with 75 net.

The ‘putting queens’ on the day were Fay Hardwick (26), Jannine Wilkin (24) and Pat Polack along with Sue Phillips who couldn’t be separated when both finished with 30 putts each in C Grade.

Marlene Wynd won last Wednesday’s Par game with an even card and also recorded a Nearest the Pin shot on the 8th hole for B Grade.

Fay Hardwick was the runner-up on a countback from Fran Samios when each posted -1.

Other pin winners were Julie Livingston and Pat Polack.

Sunday’s variation Stableford had players drawn out for partners which worked well for Julie Livingston and Geraldine Francisco.

They combined well in the multiplier section, and won the day with 69 points.

Susan Goonrey and Wen Zhang were runners-up with 67 points while Ann Dunn and Fran Samios placed third with 66 points.

Wen Zhang had the best individual score of 44 points.

Closest to the flag on the 11th hole were Narelle Kriz, Jannine Wilkin and Sue Phillips.

A smaller field fronted up for the holiday Monday Stableford with Julie Livingston on top yet again (and breaking her handicap for the second time on the weekend) with 37 points.

Fran Samios was in second spot with 33 points and Geraldine Francisco had 32 points.

The pin winners on the 15th hole were Julie Livingston, Fran Samios and Sue Phillips.

The Ladies Golf AGM will be held at the end of the month.

Ladies are asked to nominate for positions and give some of those that have served on the committee a well deserved break.

Saturday and Sunday will see the previously postponed Peak sponsored Canadian and Cobar Ladies Open events contested.

Golfers will be praying that Sunday’s predicted rain will hold off long enough for the competition to go ahead.—T’d Off

Lots of smoke and muzzle flash

There was lots of smoke and muzzle flash at last week’s 25m Black powder pistol event at the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club.

With Tim Turton as Range Officer, Michael Garbutt scored 74/100 and Geoff Clayton finished with 66/100.

A 10m Air pistol event was also held with Wayne Bunting acting as Range Officer.

Tim Turton scored an impressive score of 558 with Chris Driver recording 520, Robert Neate finished with a total of 462 and John Woloczij scored 307.
