This week’s weather report reads like the lyrics from a Katy Perry’s song, “you’re hot, then you’re cold” with temperatures ranging from a high of 30.7 degrees on Monday to an expected maximum daytime temperature of just 15 degrees tomorrow.

Monday’s top of 30.7 degrees is 8.4 degrees warmer than the average for this time of the year, and every day last week were all above average.

Our coolest day of the week was experienced last Wednesday with 23.5 degrees the maximum recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology. That was still however above the average of 22.3.

Yesterday’s occasional showers were not enough to record in the Bureau’s rain gauges but signaled the cooler change with the thermometer reaching 22.1 by the time we went to print.

The temperature will continue to drop with 19 the expected maximum today along with the chance of a thunderstorm.

Tomorrow will be our coldest day of the week ahead with the Bureau predicting a high of just 15 degrees.

As the days become cooler again, so too will the nights with lows of five and six predicted overnight for Saturday and Sunday.

Friday is headed for a top of 18 and the expected maximum for Saturday will be similar with a top of 19.

The sun will be shining on Sunday and bring a top of 23 degrees with Monday shaping up to have a high of 27.

“The internal ‘rough-ins’ - the behind-thewalls plumbing and electrical - are now complete, and the internal wall linings have already started to take shape.”

Outside, stormwater connections are in place, the roof installation is finished and concrete paths are starting to be laid.

“Planning for the external display plinths is also underway, while production of the immersive underground mine experience component has been successfully completed,” Mrs Griffiths said.

“Looking ahead, September is shaping up to be a busy month on site.

“Windows and doors will be installed, external brickwork will begin, and wall and soffit linings will be finalised. Other upcoming tasks include façade flashings, painting, and preparing for the installation of exhibits.

“These works will bring us another step closer to showcasing the rich mining history of Site supervisor Richard Murphy and museum curator Kay Stingemore on site at the Cobar in an exciting and interactive way.

Taking action against overdose

Calling all home grown artists Create NSW is calling for applications for its first round of 2025-26 Regional Arts Touring Fund, to support home grown arts and cultural producers eager to take their exceptional shows and exhibitions out on the road to every corner of NSW. Funding up to $60,000 for Small Tours and up to $120,000 for Large Tours is available for both individual artists and organisations with important stories to be told and experiences to be shared.

Regional Arts Touring is open to a wide range of art forms and for audiences of all ages – First Nations arts and culture, performing arts, visual arts, literature, history and museums, digital and immersive arts – so a broadrange of stories can be told.

Applications close early next month.

Police investigate two vehicle thefts Rachael Davis-Manns and Riki Santos Schaumkell from the Royal Flying Doctor Service recently hosted an information day at the Cobar Youth and Community Centre to mark International Overdose Awareness Day. They handed out information and spoke to people about Overdose Awareness Day which aims to spread the message that overdose is preventable.

Cobar Police have received two reports of thefts in the past week.

A Yamaha 200 motorcycle is believed to have been stolen from a property on Rosevale Road, Canbelego sometime between August 28 and September 4.

A caged trailer, with Queensland registration plate 747 USE, was stolen from the Telstra Exchange (approximately 35kms east of Cobar on the Barrier Highway) between 4.30pm on September 3 and 6.30am on September 4.

Police request anyone with any information in relation to these matters to contact Cobar Police or Crime Stoppers.

Beautiful bowling In the Golfie’s Saturday social bowls tournament Tony Polack, Shine McIver and Greg Clark finished with a +3 win over Robert Grimwade (bowls coach visiting from Coolum), David Schofield and David Kershaw.

John ‘Shark’ Daly, Mick McManus and Mick Harvey had a +1 victory against Doug Hudson, Karen Daly and Paul Kershaw.

Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod and Karen Daly had a great day on the greens on Sunday despite the gusty conditions! They beat Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Greg Clark by a lovely +16 margin.

Close matches and big scores in darts comp

Some close matches and big scores were recorded in the local darts competition last Wednesday night.

RSL Minors had a close 5-4 win against RSL Dingoes while RSL also claimed a 5-4 win after narrowly defeating Empire Barflies.

In the other two games, Western Grumblebums beat Golfie Gophers 6-3 and Golfie Spearchuckers also won their game by a 6-3 margin over Golfie Ones & Fives.

The men’s highest score of the week was a big 180, thrown by Jarrad Ebsworth, while the ladies’ highest score was 33, recorded by Paige Coleman.

John-Wayne Josephson had the highest peg out for the week with 80, while the ladies’ highest peg out for the week was 53, recorded by Deni Brown.

Two big golf tournaments were contested

Two big men’s golf tournaments were contested over the weekend with the Monthly Medal, a Stroke event, played on Saturday and the Captain’s Trophy, an individual Stableford, took place on Sunday.

There were 15 players on both days.

The course is good with plenty of run and some good scores came in over the weekend.

Bill Fugar and Greg Clark both had scores of 69, Jay Egan had a one-under par score of 70 and Stewart Fraser had a 71.

But no one was going to stop Bian Smith on his birthday; he played his best golf for a long time to score 75 off the stick for a net result of 66.

That was the success story of the day.

However, if you’re having a bad day and there’s a Stroke event on, you might be better off staying at home and working in the garden, and Travis Buckman has a very nice garden.

After his first two holes, which took an alleged 20 shots, his roses will probably get some extra attention next week.

It wasn’t all bad though, he did win a Nearest the Pin prize, on the 3rd hole.

Other pin winners were Bill Fugar, on the 7th and 8th holes and Alec Fraser on the 15th.

Young golfers Rowdy Barton and Cohan Nicholson have seen their handicaps drop considerably over the course of the season, but they still keep getting good scores and winning golfing events.

They both had scores of 39 on Sunday with Nicholson winning on a countback.

Paul Kershaw had his best round for a while scoring 38, Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence came next with 37 and Mr Consistency, Bill Fugar, played to his handicap yet again, scoring 36.

Lawrence won three Nearest the Pin prizes on the 7th, 8th and 15th holes with Nicholson winning the 3rd and Fugar the 11th.

On Wednesday, with Garry Wilkin not playing, it gave other golfers a chance to win the mid-week competition.

Bill Fugar took advantage of Wilko’s absence to finally score more than 36 points and win the day with 38 points, the same score as Bian Smith. (Fugar won after a countback.)

Third place went to Travis Buckman with 35 points.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Wayne Josephson on the 3rd hole and Smith won the 8th, 11th and 15th.

Bill Fugar has skipped well clear of the rest of the field in the Nearest The Pin competition and now has a tally of 14, with Brian Russ and Garry Wilkin each on 11.

Two Cobar Amateur Pistol Club shooters competed in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) championship in Dubbo over the weekend with excellent results recorded.

Michael Garbutt put in a top performance claiming two first place finishes and a second place in his grades, along with a grade break in the 50m Pistol event.

Adam Green also impressed, securing a first, second and third place across his events.

The Cobar club hosted a 10m Air Pistol competition on Sunday with four handicaps broken on the day.

Top shooting came from Etienne Gouthier, who shot 432 off pistol and, combined with his 350 handicap, finished with a total score of 782.

Gouthier is now sporting a new handicap of 151.

Amanda Sime also adjusted her handicap after shooting 467 off pistol.

With her old handicap of 260, she finished on 727, which moved her on to a new handicap to 119.

Scott Toomey impressed with a score of 347 off pistol and, combined with his 350 starting handicap, he finished with a total of 697 and earned a new handicap of 227.

Joe Sime had 428 off pistol and, together with his 178 handicap, finished with a total of 606, and now has a new handicap of 154.

Other scores on the day were: Robert Neate scored 484-66-550 and Todd Manns 453-83536.

The club’s next shoot will be a 25m Standard Pistol event.
