Thanks to a recent $4,400 donation from Aurelia Metals/Peak Gold Mines, the Copper City Men’s Shed has been able to purchase a large industrial air conditioner to cool one section of the men’s shed that did not having any air conditioning. Men’s Shed coordinator Gordon Hill said Peak had been very generous donating a total of $17,622 towards various shed improvements including the purchase of a metal lathe, roller shutter cupboards, cordless power tools and personal protective equipment for shed members.

Thief arrested

A man has been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into property-related crime in rural areas throughout the western region.

Strike Force Dozer was established by officers from the Rural Crime Prevention Team and Orana Mid-Western Police District in March this year to investigate rural property crime in the Cobar area along with other incidents at Narromine, Warren, Trangie and Nyngan.

As part of ongoing inquiries, officers were conducting proactive patrols of Merri Merri Road, south of Carinda, on April 28, when they located a vehicle that had been reported stolen from Narromine in March.

Subsequent inquiries led investigators to a business in Carinda, where they arrested a 24year-old man the same day at about 1pm.

He was taken to Walgett Police Station and charged with driving a vehicle that was taken without consent of owner.

He was also charged with an outstanding warrant in relation to charges for: two counts of take and drive vehicle without consent of owner, larceny, enter enclosed agricultural land and damage property-aggravated, destroy or damage property, steal trailer, damage property by fire, custody of knife in public place, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority and possess prohibited drug.

The Narromine man was initially refused bail and appeared at Dubbo Local Court on April 29 where he was granted conditional bail and was ordered to re-appear at court later this month.

Investigations are continuing. Anyone with information about Strike Force Dozer incidents is urged to contact CrimeStoppers.

More road funding for local councils Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has welcomed the announcement of another round of funding for councils in the electorate of Parkes through the highly successful Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.

Mr Coulton said another $12,255,336 will be allocated to 18 councils in his electorate including $1,711,185 for Cobar Shire Council.

He said more than $115,811,000 has been allocated to councils in the Parkes electorate under the previous Coalition Government initiated program which provides valuable funding to help councils undertake improvements to locally identified infrastructure.

While welcoming the funding Mr Coulton said it is imperative that guidelines attached to the funding be announced immediately.

“Without knowing what they will or won’t be able to do with this money it is very difficult for councils to plan their capital works projects, so these details matter.

“It’s been very frustrating for councils across my electorate to have to wait so long before they can even begin to plan their own budgets and it is unclear why there has been this level of delay.

“I have called on Labor to release the funding allocations in full for the LRCI program; I now call on them to release the guidelines so that councils can get on with putting this money to use and planning their priority projects.”

In addition to taking on lead and chorus roles, the students also helped out behind the scenes with production and writing.

They were guided by creative director Murray Dahm and musical director Peter Aoun from Opera Express in what is a very unique experience which aims to help students find their creative voices.

Murray spoke with The Cobar Weekly last week during rehearsals and explained how the program worked.

“So basically I turn up and do all the facilitation of the script writing, which was Monday morning.

“Composition with my fabulous music director was Tuesday.

“Wednesday we cast the show, started painting the sets and then Peter and I finished off all the music that night so that we could make an entire recording of the show for the students to listen to and learn.”

When casting was conducted the students were democratically voted into the lead roles by each other.

Rehearsals for the show then began in earnest before the world premiere of ‘Cancel Culture’ aired on Friday night.

Murray praised the engagement and enthusiasm in which the Cobar High students approached the whole project.

(Cancel Culture refers to the mass withdrawal of support from public figures or celebrities who have done things that aren’t socially accepted today. This practice of ‘canceling’ or mass shaming often occurs on social media platforms.)

“It’s about how people deserve a second chance, and we shouldn’t jump to conclusions about what they’re going through,” Murray explained.

“The big lyric in the end is that we don’t know what they are going through on the inside, so maybe we should ask some questions to find out who they are, which is a beautiful message that these guys have come up with,” Murray said.

“It’s really beautiful and moving to watch them be so engaged with such a challenging process and yet showing them actually nothing about what we’re doing is challenging, it’s immense amounts of fun.”

Cobar High School music teacher Laura Andrew said it was wonderful to welcome the Opera Express team back to the school. (Their first visit was in 2021.)

“I think we have a lot of musical minded and creative students and it’s nice for them to have an opportunity to express themselves.

“It’s really important to have the arts at school,” Laura said.

“This kind of program is just a bit of everything—it’s a smorgasbord of all of the aspects of being creative.

“They start from scratch even working out how you devise a plot, how you develop a character, how you write a tune.

“We have Pete on keyboard and he is phenomenal. I think a lot of the students are just in awe to see a musician at work and thinking on the spot.”

Landholders very interested in exclusion fencing

Western Local Land Services (Western LLS) has received a strong response from landholders looking for funding assistance to construct exclusion fencing.

In total, 69 landholders have submitted an expression of interest (EOI) through their Fencing Biosecure Production Zones and Pest Knockout Grant Program.

EOIs closed in late January and have now been suitability assessed, with eligible landholders now invited to apply for their specific on-property projects.

Once the applications are received, they will be competitively assessed, and all landholders will be informed of the outcome.

An announcement of the successful projects is expected to be made in June.

The Fencing Biosecure Production Zones and Pest Knockout Grant Program will support landholders to control total grazing pressure, improve their biosecurity, and undertake pest animal and pest weed control activities.

The program will also assist landholders prepare for emergency animal disease outbreaks such as foot-and-mouth disease and lumpy skin disease.

Mixed bag of weather this week

Our weather has been quite varied with almost 10 degrees difference between our coolest and warmest daytime temperatures over the past week.

The Bureau of Meteorology reports our top daytime temperature last week was recorded on Tuesday with a maximum of 23.6 degrees before the mercury gradually dropped to a much cooler 14.5 degrees on Sunday.

Wednesday’s maximum was 22.7 degrees, before it dipped a bit on Thursday to 19.6 and then climbed back up a bit to 21.6 on Friday.

Saturday was also warm and sunny with the thermometer reaching a beautiful 22.1 degrees before the cool winds arrived on Sunday.

Monday morning started off cold with a minimum of 1.8 degrees (the coolest overnight temperature of the week) and it only reached a top of 15.5 during the day.

Yesterday was slightly warmer with a top of 19.

The Bureau reports the warmer days will make a return this week with today heading for a top of 21 while 23 degrees is the expected maximum for tomorrow.

It’s going to be even warmer heading into the weekend with 24 degrees the expected maximum for both Friday and Saturday.

Sunday is also predicted to be fine and warm with a top of 23.

The mostly sunny days will continue into next week with 23 the expected top on Monday.

There’s also a chance of a shower on Monday, the only rain the Bureau has predicted for the week.

Home-grown talent

Cobar’s own talented musician, Kahlia Martin, was called up on stage at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Saturday night to perform with visiting country music artist Beccy Cole. It’s not the first time the pair have performed together, with Beccy noticing Kahlia’s talent a few years ago at the Tamworth Country Music Festival and inviting her to join her all-girl band, The Sisters of Twang. Kahlia has joined the Sisters of Twang on a number of occasions to play at various music festivals. And Kahlia demonstrated just how talented she is, jumping up to perform with no notice, and playing on a guitar borrowed from one of Beccy’s band members!

“I feel really proud to be recognised for this award,” Georgia said.

“It means a lot to me that women in industries are being recognised for their achievements.

“But most of all, I aim to be someone that other women can look up to and go to for advice.”

While winning the award could help to enhance her career, Georgia said that’s not the reason she submitted her nomination.

“I’m happy to be involved and to keep pushing the movement of equality for women in mining and other industries.

“However, I do think it will be a great networking event,” Georgia said.

“But I’m also fine if I don’t get anything.”

Malina said working on developing the music for the opera had been a highlight for her.

“Pete plays the piano so lovely, I love that I get to like sing along with him.

“I’m more confident singing-wise now than I was two years ago and I’m definitely more confident playing this role this year,” Malina said.

And that newly-found confidence showed on stage when the production aired on Friday night and was greeted with rapturous applause from the audience.

Cobar Roosters are off to a good start this season The Cobar Roosters First Graders got their Christie and Hood Castlereagh Rugby League premiership defence off to good start on Saturday when they accounted for the Coonamble Bears 26 to 12 at Coonamble.

The Roosters however certainly had to work hard to claim the victory.

They held a 12 to 6 lead at halftime, and while the final score might indicate a reasonably comfortable win, it could have been a whole lot closer had the Bears’ ball handling not let them down at crucial times.

Cobar’s points came from tries to Tim Hillam (2), Sione Fakahua and Thomas Plater with Plater kicking three goals.

The Roosters’ Best & Fairest points went to Gerald Mackey (3), Hillam (2) and Kai Greenwood (1).

Zane Taylor earned the Players’ Player award.

Despite leading for most of the match, the Cobar Roosterettes were narrowly beaten 20-18 in their Ladies League Tag game against Coonamble.

Best of the season The Ladies’ Golf field numbers last week were the best so far all season.

Perhaps with the course going to be closed for the Men’s Open on Sunday, that may have had something to do with the better roll ups on Wednesday and Saturday.

Wednesday’s Stableford round had 12 starters with Geraldine Francisco beating Fay Hardwick on a countback to take the win, after both ladies posted 36 points.

In third place was Brenda Fugar on 34 points with Ann Dunn in 4th position on 33.

Closest to the flag on the 11th hole were Sally Bannister, Geraldine Francisco and Pat Polack.

A big group of 17 players took to the course for another Stableford game on Saturday.

Marlene Wynd topped the pool after finishing with 37 points closely followed by Glenda Peebles on 36.

Geraldine Francisco was next best with 33 points followed by Nadine McLeod and Julie Livingston on 32 points. Brenda Fugar and Pat Polack also had to be separated by a countback after each had 31 points.

Nearest the Pin prizes on the 3rd hole went to Fay Hardwick, Karen Manns and Donna Prendergast while on the 15th hole Fay Hardwick, Geraldine Francisco and Ann Dunn were the winners.

A Par game will be played today and on Saturday the Cobar Miners Race Club are sponsoring a three person Four-Ball-Best-Ball Stableford.

Teams can either be Women’s, Men’s or Mixed for the day so players are asked to sort their teams ASAP. A ‘free day’ Stableford is set down for Mother’s Day on Sunday.—T'd Off

Three championship bowls games were played at the Golfie last week with just one point the decider in one of the Pairs games making for a thrilling match.

Tony Brown and Narelle Kriz went head to head in a Championships Singles match on Tuesday.

True to current form, Brown was leading +9 half way through the match before Kriz got herself sorted and went on to claim a +1 win by the last end.

Gerard Livingston and Shane Carter went toe-to-toe in another Championships Singles match on Saturday.

Livingston was too good and finished with a +13 win which takes him through to the next round.

In the Championship Pairs game played on Sunday Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod and Jason Howell came up against Narelle Kriz and Glenn ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe.

The match started out well for both teams and there was barely a point between them.

Team Bogger was however only warming up and they went on to finish with a +12 win.

Sunday’s Social Bowls featured three games and included bowlers Dave and Gail Arden from Caulfield in Victoria.

Rockin’ n a Rollin’ on rink 1 were Deagan Brown (front man for Ballz N All) and his Skip Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond who played John ‘Shark’ Daly and Mick Harvey.

Halfway through their match it appears (according to the score card) that Team Duck could do no wrong and they went on to win the day with a score of +15!

Rink 5’s game between David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Allan Gardoll, who took on Tony Polack and Kelly Beard, was 75 per cent ‘Knight Magic’ until Beard and Polack rallied - bringing them within ‘Cooee’ distance.

With a +3 win, the Knights grabbed second spot for the day.

Fortunately for Dave Arden, his Second, Daryl Jermyn and Skip Karen Daly managed to keep experienced Skip Doug Hudson, Second David Thomas and Gail Arden in check to take third place when they had a +1 win.

The George the Giraffe recipient was the mighty ‘Duck’. Apparently Craig Grimmond is the only bowler, ever, to beach bowls south of the green, three times!

Friday night’s Twilight Bowls was decidedly chilly however, the intrepid twilighters had a great deal of fun!

Team Shark (John and Karen Daly and Kelly Beard) won the evening by +11 over Greg Clark, Allan Gardoll and Tony Polack.

Young Roosters celebrate a few good wins over Tigers Sport

The Cobar Roosters Junior Rugby Coaches Award. and Indie Burke also scoring a try each.

Cobar had a big 50-20 win in their Under 16’s match against the Nyngan Tigers with tries scored by Jaxon Burke (3), Axel Fairfull (2), Oisin McMullen (2), Nick Hodges (1) and Aiden Swan (1).

Oisin McMullen converted seven of their nine tries.

Jarryn Moore (from Bourke playing with Cobar) was awarded the Roosters’ Players’ Player title while the Coaches Awards were earned by the whole U16’s team.

Cobar also won the Under 10’s game 24-10 with Eligh Ritter named their Players’ Player after scoring all four of their tries, while the Coaches award went to Taj Goonrey.

Eligh’s four tries were converted by Dusty McDonald, Sonny Stephens, Alfie Toomey and Brock Eves.

In the Under 12’s game, Nyngan got it over Cobar to narrowly win 24-18.

Captain Kody Martin took the conversation attempt and succinctly demonstrated how it was done successfully. Cobar now led 24 – 7.

Jack Geiki, Dunne, and Jacklin kept on keeping on in defence as did Will Peckham at five eighth. In fact, Peckham was so committed in defence, he was given 10 minutes in the sinbin following a complaint by the linesmen on Gulargambone’s side of the paddock.

Peckham’s was the second sinbinning for the Cobar Camels subsequent to Gular crowd hysteria but the positive point from the negative situation here was that the referee did appear to have identified the guilty party.

(Peckham however was not keen for a rest.)

Brilley continued his strong game making a superb tackle saving a certain runaway try and Marika showed that he could not only score tries but also defend.

Marika broke one of the Gular kingpins who called it quits after he was the unfortunate recipient of the perfectly timed “collision”.

To their credit, Gular did not give up and again camped on Cobar’s try line trying to bash their way over.

But, Ryan won another “no release” penalty to relieve the pressure and from a subsequent loose ball Marika took the defence on and ran 50 metres to score a try which he failed to convert. Now how many conversion attempts was that he missed? That thought must have crossed Marika’s mind because immediately before full-time he ran onto a perfect pass from Martin and sprinted 80 metres to score under the posts. Marika changed his tactics and successfully converted by way of a welldirected dropkick for a final score of 36 – 7.

This Camels group has the makings of a very competitive rugby side in 2023.

The Fijian connection adds strength and talent across the park, but it is the players from 2021/22 who are also lifting their games and playing out of their skins with renewed enthusiasm who are complementing the new talent.

Special mention goes to Al Ewan, a Camels veteran who completed 80 minutes of a hard uncompromising rugby match in Gilgandra in the critical but dangerous position at hooker.

Good soccer skills run in a number of Cobar families The Cobar Junior Soccer season is underway with Minis, Mids and Senior games played at Ward Oval on Saturday morning.

And it seems good soccer skills run in some families with the Preisig, Geppert, Brown and Theakston family names popping up again and again in different divisions.

In the Minis competition, United won 5-1 in their game against Rangers with Max Preisig scoring all five goals for his United team.

The other Mini’s game between Wanderers and Rovers finished in a 2-all draw with Levi Mackay scoring two goals for Wanderers while Rovers’ goals were scored by newcomer to the game, Corey Martin and a veteran player, Sam McKervey.

The Minis’ Gumnuts Milkshake awards went to Harry McBride, Dayna Armstrong, Nestor Linn and Corey Martin while Max Preisig, Darcy Geppert, Levi Mackay and Sam McKervey received the Cobar Hotbake Donut awards.

In the Mids division, United beat Rangers 2-1 with Tom Preisig scoring both goals for his United team while Rangers’ goal was scored by Henry Ntamuhanga.

Fraser wins Men’s Golf Open after a tussle The field of 42 golfers was greeted with a cold and windy day on Sunday for the 2023 Men’s Epiroc Golf Open with the day made just a bit worse by the early hit-off time.

After a long tussle in A Grade, it came down to the three players who were expected to challenge: Garry Wilkin, Alec Fraser and Jay Egan, plus Joey Walker, a 14-year old schoolboy from Warren.

After 26 holes it looked as if Garry Wilkin had it in the bag, until the final hole where he had a quadruple bogey eight to sink his chances and give him nightmares for months to come – he lost by two shots!

It then all came down to a three-man playoff between Egan, Fraser and Walker, who all scored a 116 off the stick.

It took a few holes but Cobar Men’s Golf Captain Alec Fraser emerged the winner by finally beating young Walker, who inspired everyone with his ability and is no doubt a champion of the future.

The 27 hole Net winner was Brendan Smith from Nyngan with 109, over Mark Fraser 111½.

In B Grade, Darren Frail from Brewarrina (124) beat Alex Sambrook from Narromine (130) in the Scratch event and John Martin won the Net event (106½), just holding off Greg Clark (109½).

After a big wrap last week, Peter ‘China’ Brien lost energy and his competitiveness looking for too many lost balls on Sunday.

His playing partner, Epiroc representative Alex Diamond, said he brought balls for all the players for the day but they would have to go out onto the course and look for them themselves.

In C Grade, it was an all local affair with David ‘Flash’ Gordon (139) holding off Paul Kershaw (145) in the Scratch event and Sean Bayliss won the 27 hole Net (116½) with Robbie Cummins (118) the runner-up.

Diamond had a forgettable day as far as good golf was concerned, but he did take home the 18 hole Net prize in C Grade, as he was the only one left. (However Diamond said he did have an excuse - he was playing with China!)

The other A Grade results were: 18 hole Scratch Bruce Bennett (Brewarrina) 75, and runner-up Garry Wilkin 77; 18 hole Net winner Stewart Fraser 76 and runner-up Morris Sullivan (Brewarrina) 76; 9 hole Scratch winner Jay Egan 37; 9 hole Net winner Kale Bock (Narromine) 37; and Longest Drive Alec Fraser.

In B Grade the 18 hole Scratch winner was Tony Conley (Bendigo) The Cobar Men’s 2023 Epiroc Golf Open C.D. Pretty Cup was 90 with Henry Buttsworth (Narromine) 90 the runner-up; won by the club captain Alec Fraser after he survived a three-way 18 hole Net winner Nathan Willis 77 and runner-up Peter Brien 78; playoff with Jay Egan and 14 year old Joey Walker from Warren. 9 hole Scratch winner Scott Mayne 41; 9 hole Net winner Ian Prendergast 37; and Longest Drive Tony Conley.
