More than 30 local sporting clubs, charities, schools and service groups have welcomed a donation of $66,635.81 from the Regional Australia Bank’s 2023 Community Partnership program. The program celebrates what volunteers do in their communities with Regional Australia Bank this year giving away a total of $2.75 million in 36 locations, which is a 40 per cent increase on the amount donated from the program last year. Police arrest three teen girls

Celebrating NAIDOC

Cobar Police have arrested and charged three local teenage girls who broke into and caused damage at Cobar High School last week.

Following their investigation into a report of a break and enter at the school sometime on July 29 or 30, police this week arrested two 13 year old girls and a 14 year old girl.

All three were charged with ‘Aggravated break and enter in company and cause property damage’.

They were granted conditional bail to appear at Cobar Children’s Court later this month.

Students enjoyed participating in a range of different activities which helped them to learn about Aboriginal culture. A vehicle being driven with no registration plates in Linsley Street on Friday morning came to the attention of a local Highway Patrol officer.

Police stopped the vehicle at 9.30am and following a search of the vehicle and the 25 year old male driver, a small amount of cannabis, a steel hatchet and a wallet believed to be stolen property were located.

The 25 year old man (of no fixed address) was arrested and charged with possessing a prohibited drug, an offensive implement, having goods in custody, and a number of traffic offences.

He was refused bail and appeared at Dubbo Local Court on Saturday where he was again refused bail.

The man was then ordered to appear at Bourke Local Court on Monday.

Award for Aurelia Aurelia Metals was announced among the winners of the NSW Minerals Council’s Health, Safety, Environment and Community Awards in the Hunter on Monday.

The awards recognise the most outstanding innovations and contributions to the mining industry across a range of categories.

The Environmental Excellence Award was presented to Aurelia for the company’s landmark Recordable Environmental Incident Frequency Rate (REIFR) measure.

Aurelia’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Bryan Quinn said Aurelia takes the protection and management of the environment very seriously.

“REIFR is calculated by tracking environmental incidents level three and above (as outlined in our ‘Incident and Hazard Management Procedure’) per million hours worked.

“This mirrors our Total Recordable Incident Frequency Rate (TRIFR) reporting.

“Incorporating REIFR into our reporting framework coincided with the overarching cultural shift that came with the inception and roll out of our Safe Metals strategy.

“And given we view safety and environmental performance as intrinsically linked, it comes as no surprise we’ve seen year-on-year improvements in our environmental performance. Our REIFR reporting framework is a unique solution to an absence in policy for mining companies to report their environmental performance. There are advantages of the framework for other mining companies. These advantages transcend transparency obligations and point to improved safety and environmental performance and strengthening employee accountability,” Mr Quinn said.

Follow up on rural health inquiry Have health services in remote, rural and regional areas improved over the past year and what is the government doing to strengthen the regional health workforce, and ensure that health services in remote, rural and regional areas receive appropriate funding?

The Select Committee on Remote, Rural and Regional Health has adopted an inquiry that will examine how recommendations made in a 2022 Legislative Council (LC) committee inquiry are being carried out.

The inquiry has a particular focus on recent government actions to address staff recruitment and retention, workplace culture, and funding for agencies, programs and incentives.

The Select Committee has adopted this inquiry as a first step to oversee the results of the LC committee recommendations over the next two years.

The Committee is now calling for submissions from stakeholders and the general public.

Committee Chair, Dr Joe McGirr MP, said improvements to the regional health workforce and funding for services and programs are critical to address the many poor outcomes that patients are experiencing in remote, rural and regional health services across the state.

“The Committee wants to know what progress has been made by the government and NSW Health in implementing the recommendations since last year’s inquiry, and any challenges that have been experienced as part of this process,” Dr McGirr said.

“If you or your organisation are affected by the proposed reforms, or have suggestions in regard to improving the implementation of the original recommendations, we would love to hear your views.

“The 2022 Council inquiry made 44 recommendations, and the government proposed numerous actions to implement these recommendations,” Dr McGirr said.

“Our Committee’s role is to ensure that the government is kept to its word, and that health outcomes are improved for people across regional NSW.” Submissions close next month.

Stakeholders are advised the Committee is focused on the implementation of the LC Portfolio Committee No. 2 recommendations, and is not seeking further submissions that outline health outcomes and access to hospitals and health services in regional NSW.

A meeting of ministers

Cobar Christian Leaders Pastor Stephen Gillette (Generocity Church), Father Paul Finucane (Catholic Church), Onesmus Mumbe (Catholic Priesthood student), Pastor Trenton Grofos (Baptist Church) and Reverend James Daymond (Anglican Church), met last Wednesday. The Ministers plan to meet monthly to pray and work together in the community. Items discussed at last week’s meeting included: advertising church service times for motels, caravan park, children’s services and notice boards; planning for the Christmas Carols event; ministry to men; a combined Gospel Choir; and compassionate care for the Cobar district. Pastor Michelle Gillette (Generocity Church) and Pastor Lorenzo Berry (Seventh Day Adventist) were absent.

Changes imminent for Far West FDC Cobar Shire Council is seeking to withdraw the Broken Hill Family Day Care (BHFDC) service from their Far West Family Day Care (FWFDC) operations.

Cobar Shire’s general manager Peter Vlatko said council absorbed BHFDC (which looks after approximately 130 children) as part of its Family Day Care operations across the region in 2020 “to help them out”.

“They were screaming out for services and nobody was doing it, it was just an extension of ours,” Mr Vlatko said.

He said Cobar Shire however now feels that it’s not in their best interests to be “providing a service to another town” and have been in discussions with Broken Hill Council about taking it over.

“We’re busy enough with what we’ve got and we thought that the Broken Hill Council will feel comfortable in looking after some of their families who live and work in their town,” he said.

Broken Hill Council is however not interested in taking on the service according to a Mirage News report saying they “lacked the resources, experience, and regulatory and compliance knowledge required for day care services”.

Mr Vlatko said he believed it would be in Broken Hill Council’s best interests for the city to take on BHFDC. “Some of the people that use this service are doctors, police, nurses, etc that actually work in the town.

“If you take this away, what are they going to do?” he said.

Mr Vlatko said he plans to have further discussions with Broken Hill Council representatives tomorrow when they are in Cobar for the Western Division Conference.

“I’m going to sit down with them and try and understand why they’ve made that decision,” he said.

“There is a repercussion for them, I don’t understand why they didn’t consider it, but anyway it’s their business and I respect that.”

He said they will look at other options, including a private operator.

“At the end of the day we’ll help whoever takes it on as long as it’s still being run in accordance of how it should be run.

“But the reality of it is that we will have to look at the option of terminating that service,” Mr Vlatko said.

Mayoral report

Late last week the General Manager Peter Vlatko and myself attended the Country Mayors Meeting held at the Parliament House Conference Room in Macquarie Street, Sydney.

It was addressed by Ministers and Shadow Ministers of the newly elected parliament and what little news there was did not appear encouraging to Cobar Shire Council.

The majority of news was that nothing of substance would be handed down prior to the September budget, however one glaring item mentioned by the second speaker, the Minister for Western New South Wales [Tara Moriarty], intimated that Resources for Regions was being looked at as a candidate for scrapping.

This would be an utter disaster for Cobar.

The Resources for Regions grant last year consisted of some two to two and a half times the entire rate base charged by Council.

It is not as if this grant is not raised from emoluments earned in the Cobar Shire, as it is based on a small percentage of royalties paid by mines in the shire directly to the State Government on the value of mine production.

The rate base for Cobar is minuscule compared to a Randwick or Waverly Council in Sydney both of which have the substantial secondary revenue flow from parking meters.

Chess has taken off in Cobar

Chess has taken off at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre with 24 kids playing in last Thursday’s weekly competition. Over the one hour of competition, players will get to play three games randomly against other players. There’s a small prize per game and if a player wins all three games in one afternoon, they get to choose their prize from a prize pool. The winner each week is based on percentages. Once players have competed for three weeks they are then eligible to be included on the leaderboard. The ages of players ranges from 7-18 years but adults are also welcome to join and test their skills against the top juniors. CSA Mine is one of Australia’s longest operating copper mines with a history stretching back almost 150 years. At 1.9 kilometers deep, CSA is the second deepest copper mine in Australia and the third highest copper grade in the world. Located near the NSW town of Cob ar, CSA Mine employs around 550 people and produces approximately 40,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year. The ore is mined and processed on site and then transported by rail 700km to the Port of Newcastle for export. CSA Mine was acquired by Metals Acquisition Limited in June 2023.

Worthy bowls adversaries meet on the greens

Worthy bowls adversaries Paul Kershaw and Tadgh Waugh took to the Golfie greens on Saturday and fought to the very end in their Singles Championship match.

Waugh led for 19 ends and the difference between them varied from five shots on the sixth end to just three shots on the 16th, still in favour of Waugh.

At one stage the scores were 13-all; a valiant effort from Kershaw brought the game to a 19all draw again on the 23rd end; and by the 26th end, it was 22 points each.

Talk about tenacity, neither player was ever going to concede defeat.

Finally Kershaw sealed the deal with a three point win on the 28th end and won the final end to finish as a +1 victor which takes him through to the next round. It was an absolute thriller of a game with none of the spectators taking their eyes off of the green.

Great start for Roosterettes

Record basketball score

The Cobar Roosterettes put the wind up their Narromine opposition when they had the upper hand just before half time in their Round 13 Castlereagh League Tag game on Saturday at Narromine.

The Roosterettes led the home side 12-10 after Brianna Watson had landed two tries and two conversions for Cobar.

An intercept try by Narromine just moments before half time saw them snatch the lead and a concerted second half effort saw the home side through to a 34-12 win.

Best and Fairest points went to Watson (3), Zoë Egan and Kayla Hasson (2 each) and Sarah Morley (1) with Egan also earning the Players’ Player team vote.

Despite the loss, the Cobar girls managed to hold on to third place on the competition ladder, three points ahead of Narromine.

The Roosterettes have a tough job ahead of them in the final round this Saturday when they make the long road trip to take on Gulgong.

Rest for Reggies

The Cobar Roosters Reggies team had the opportunity to sit back on their laurels (and rest their weary old bones) on Saturday when they had a bye in the Christie & Hood Castlereagh League Reserve Grade competition.

The boys will however be strapping back on their boots (and strapping up multiple areas of their bodies) this Saturday when they travel to Gulgong to take on the Gulgong Bull Terriers.

A total of 114 points was scored in the match between Yellow and Blue in the Junior Basketball competition at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre last week. The game has earned the title of the highest scoring basketball game played at the Youthie.

(Apparently the old record was 110 points in a game.) The scoreline was however one-sided with Yellow winning 106-8 over Blue. The game was played in great spirits as not only were the winners happy, but the Blue team were cheering them on, helping them get to the 100 point mark. In the other junior games last week, Green and Black played a close match with Black taking the win, 45-38 while Pink and Red teams both played a hard game with Pink eventually winning 44-20.▪ Photo contributed

The Cobar Ladies’ Golf Club Championships were played on the weekend over 54 holes with Jenny Stephenson (123) in A Grade, Fran Samios (144) in B Grade and Daphne Cross (170) in C Grade the overnight leaders going into the second day.

Stephenson increased her lead on Sunday and won the A Grade title with a scratch score of 242 from runner-up Julie Livingston on 275. Sally Bannister won the Net division in A Grade with 230 and Narelle Kriz was the runner-up with 236 net.

Trailing by four shots going into Sunday, Jannine Wilkin (293) was able to catch the leaders and win the B Grade title by nine shots over Fran Samios (302). The Net winner was Geraldine Francisco on 229 while Brenda Fugar was the runner-up with 235 net. Daphne Cross had a 10 shot head start on Sunday in C Grade and held on to win by eight shots with 336 from Ann Dunn on 344.
