Is it too early to be putting the Christmas decorations up?

Leading the run on putting out their Christmas stock early this year were Anni’s Arts and Crafts and Cobar Newsagency.

Owner Anni van Westhuizen told The Cobar Weekly they always place their Christmas stock orders in January to make sure they receive it in plenty of time for Christmas.

“Last year they promised me it would be here by the 1st of October but they were very delayed,” Anni said.

She was however pleased this year when their stock did arrive at the beginning of October.

“We started putting it on the shelves as we had customers asking for it,” Anni said.

A number of other local retailers have said they think it’s too early to be decorating and putting their Christmas stock out, but if “everyone else is doing it” they “don’t want to be left behind”.

The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club held their Community Christmas Party on Saturday night (six weeks earlier than they did last year).

Macquarie Home Stay provides affordable low cost accommodation for people from northern and western NSW who need to travel to Dubbo for specialist medical treatment.

Macquarie Home Stay’s managing director Rod Crowfoot was in Cobar on Monday to meet with Rotary Club of Cobar members.

“Because the Rotary Club has been such a strong regular supporter of Home Stay, it was a great way to give them an update on what we’re doing and the importance of what we’re providing for the Cobar community.

“It was also a great chance to catch up with past supporters, sponsors, donors, those in referral pathways, people who access the service and potential future partners and referral pathways as well,” Mr Crowfoot said.

“Part of it is a general awareness of who we are and what we do.”

Mr Crowfoot said since the facility opened in 2019, Cobar residents have been the biggest users.

He said in addition to supplying accommodation, staff can also help patients access the IPTAAS travel and accommodation subsidy to help make their journey a bit more affordable.

“The area that we will provide the most support for is the Western Cancer Centre.

“The 26 units we are building are very much there to provide the accommodation for those coming in for radiotherapy and chemotherapy and all those cancer related treatments.

“We’ve been asking patients when they come and stay with us; What works well for you? What would you like to see changed?

How can we do things different?

“So we’ve made some changes in our design to make it more user-friendly for those longer term type treatments,” Mr Crowfoot said.

“They’ve all got their own kitchenettes and we’ve increased the size of our common area.”

He said they have also internalised the hallways, increased the size of the dining area and outdoor spaces and outdoor seating.

“We’ve very much listened to what our guests have told us they would like.”

He said in addition to cancer and maternity patients, the biggest users are people travelling to Dubbo for general specialist appointments, who need to stay for one or two nights because they have to see a specialist and then from there, could lead to surgery.

“About half the guests that stay with us every month are return guests and that’s telling us that not only are they happy with the accommodation we are providing and the services we offer, but it’s the frequency of how often people are having to come back.

“It’s not one trip, they are coming back for the same thing, maybe multiple times.”

Mr Crowfoot said they welcome support from any local businesses and organisations that want to help out.

Curbing the problem

In response to an accident and a number of complaints about the parking guides out the front of the Cheapside Butchery building in the main street, Cobar Shire Council has employed local contractor As Per Plan to make some modifications to the curbing. The guides were put in place to prevent vehicles from reversing into the verandah posts but had become trip hazards. The curb has been extended out in an effort to alleviate the problem.

Funding to seal The Wool Track The Cobar to Ivanhoe road, commonly known as The Wool Track, will get a $6.49 million seal extension as part of the Fixing Country Roads program.

An $80.3 million funding boost from the NSW Government was announced last week to allow 29 regional council road projects to get underway to help improve freight connectivity.

Sealing The Wool Track will mean a shortened route between South Australia and Queensland, which will create time saving and operational cost savings for heavy vehicles.

Funding deeds for projects that have met prerequisite qualifications have now been signed for Round 6 projects of the Fixing Country Roads Program.

It means councils can soon access money to deliver vital freight-related road projects, with construction expected to start next year.

The program helps councils repair, strengthen, widen and improve strategic freight routes in regional NSW, building upon a vision for a safer, stronger regional NSW. The latest round of funding brings the total number of projects funded to over 360 across more than 80 regional NSW councils.

There are more than 72 different types of produce that are transported by road in NSW every day.

This includes wheat, rice, beef, poultry, milk and other products like cotton, wool and timber, and these goods need to get from the farms, silos and warehouses to port.

The NSW Government is committed to supporting the freight, logistics and distribution services which are the backbone of regional NSW and provide more than 32,000 regional jobs.

This helps support growth and economic productivity and ultimately helps reduce the cost of getting goods to market.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said the efficient movement of freight is essential to our everyday lives.

“From the furniture in our homes, fuel in our cars and fresh food on supermarket shelves, we rely on a connected and safe freight network.

“All these projects have been vital in helping achieve a more efficient and thriving NSW freight industry to keep this freight moving.

“The efficient movement of goods from producer to consumer underpins our productivity, international competitiveness, and way of life,” Minister Aitchison said.

Police are warning locals to lock their vehicles and their homes following the theft of a vehicle on Sunday night and an attempted theft of another vehicle last week.

Sergeant Warwick Laing said the two incidents in the past week are a timely reminder for the community to keep their homes and vehicles locked at all times.

Between 11pm on Sunday and 6am on Monday, a silver 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander was stolen from an address in Monaghan Street.

Halloween STEAM

RFW CEO visits

The Royal Far West (RFW) children’s health service CEO Jacqui Emery visited Cobar and Bourke last week to get a better understanding of how children’s services are working together.

RFW’s focus is on helping 3-12 year olds who have been identified with developmental challenges and creating a pathway of care for them with RFW’s allied health staff.

“Obviously we’ve got a long history of working in a lot of towns in the west but we only want to be where there are gaps and of course we know those gaps are really increasing,” Ms Emery told The Cobar Weekly.

RFW has received confirmation from public and private paediatricians in Dubbo, Orange, Wagga Wagga, Tamworth and Bega that their books are either closed, or some children are waiting up to four years for an appointment.

Ms Emery said the increasing need for ongoing RFW specialist paediatric and psychiatric care (following the impacts of Covid, cumulative natural disasters and increasing mental health challenges), coupled with many paediatricians closing their books or having long wait lists in rural NSW, has meant an increased demand for RFW’s services.

She said while the RFW assessment and diagnosis service has been successfully operating in Manly for many years, they’d like to work with NSW Health to create a hub in Dubbo which would bring a range of paediatric services into regional areas.

“So basically we come to you as opposed to everyone coming to us in Manly,” Ms Emery said.

“We’re exploring those possibilities now and obviously we would need some additional funding to support that but we certainly have a great commitment from our staff and also paediatricians in regional areas to get some more support from RFW,” she said.

Local landholders briefed on changes to carbon market Some of the big changes which have recently taken place in the carbon market and that will affect landholders in Western NSW were explained at a Rangelands Carbon Workshop in Cobar.

Almost 60 landholders from across the shire and further afield to Dubbo and Wanaaring attended the workshop last Tuesday presented by the Rangelands Living Skin project, a collaboration between the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).

The event was specifically designed for rangeland producers and discussed opportunities available to farmers to diversify their income in different markets to improve their sustainability.

John Gavin from Remarkable NRM was one of the workshop presenters.

“The main purpose [of the workshop] was to provide an update on the results of a Rangeland Living Skin project by Department of Primary Industries and that talks about carbon in soils,” Mr Gavin told The Cobar Weekly.

“We combined that with a discussion around natural capital markets and the carbon market.”

Mr Gavin said landholders at last week’s meeting had a wide range of questions including: How do you get involved in the carbon market? What can you do to rehabilitate degraded areas and deal with soil erosion? How can you increase your soil carbon? Toomey takes the Minions and Panthers play 6-all draw limelight on debut Scott ‘Socket’ Toomey made his season debut in the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club’s regular competition last Tuesday night and stole plenty of the limelight.

After a bit of a rusty start in the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim, where he finished close to the back of the field, Toomey blitzed all the swimmers in the 50m event and placed third in the 100m swim.

Toomey took the glory in the 50m swim, swimming spot on his nominated time, with Matt Harland and Stephen ‘Pud’ Clark unable to be split for second place after both finished within 0.47 seconds of their nominated times.

Harland opened the night with a win in the 30m event grabbing first place with 0.03 seconds off his nominated time, marginally ahead of Ben Plush (0.04) and Chris Powell (0.15).

Dave Mexted won the 100m swim with one second off his nominated time with Kyle Roberts second (1.28) and Toomey was third with 1.35 seconds off his nominated time.

Roberts teamed up with Powell to win the Brace Relay novelty event which involved walking sideways across the pool.

Roberts and Powell finished within 0.84 seconds of their combined nominated time ahead of Plush and Tyler Roberts (2.32) and Mexted and Josh Mainey (2.50).

Cobar Amateur Pistol Club hosted a ISSF (International Shooting Sport Federation) standard competition match on Sunday with three first time visitors attending.

The visitors, under the guidance of seasoned club members Robert Neate, Geoff Clayton, Lidija Garbutt and Range Officer Michael Garbutt, proved to be competitive marksmen once their handicaps were added.

Anita Neate had a score of 159 off pistol and, combined with her handicap of 308, she finished with a total score of 467.

Other scores from the day were: Jason Holmgreen 431-110-541; Amanda Parry 196-350-546; Holly Berryman 198-350-548; Sarah Cryer 356-196-552; and Sam Quevas 216-350-566.

Darcy’s in the winner’s circle

Cobar Clay Target Club young shooter Darcy Manns came first in the clay single barrel event at the Northern NSW School Carnival shoot in Tamworth on Friday.

Wynd scores yet another win

Marlene Wynd was the winner of last Wednesday’s Ladies’ Golf stableford match scoring 32 points.

Close behind were Brenda Fugar and Daphne Cross who both had 31 points while Susan Goonrey finished with 30 points.

The closest to the flag on the 7th hole were Sally Bannister, Susan Goonrey and Pat Polack.

Saturday’s par three game was disrupted in the afternoon with thunder and lightning resulting in four players who tee’d off at noon to abandon their round.

Those who started earlier managed to finish all 18 holes with Brenda Fugar the winner on 46 net.

Daphne Cross was the runner-up with 47 net and Glenda Peebles placed third having 51 net.

Brenda Fugar, Barb Barklimore and Michelle Deppeler were nearest the pin winners on the 15th hole.

After Saturday’s rain settling the dust for a while, 10 golfers played a Stableford on Sunday.

Susan Goonrey won the day with 35 points.

Fay Hardwick and Julie Livingston both scored 34 points and new golfer Wen Zhang came 4th on 33 points.

The Nearest the Pin prizes on the 3rd hole were won by Fay Hardwick, Marlene Wynd and Ann Dunn.

A Par game will be played today, a Mulligan Stableford (six shots) game is set down for Saturday and a Learners Day Stableford will be played on Sunday.

Two Cobar golf ladies, Narelle Kriz and Jannine Wilkin, will be travelling to Nyngan on Sunday for the regional final of the KENO competition vying for the chance to advance to Bonville later in the month.—T'd Off

Third time lucky The Twilight Bowls Jackpot prize at the Golfie was won for the third consecutive week on Friday night.

Greg Clark, Allan Gardoll and Bayley Prendergast finished as the winners of the night and the Jackpot.

They had a +6 win over their opponents John Daly, Karen Daly and David Kershaw.

Prendergast was the Spider winner.

Sunday’s social bowls game enticed enough avid bowlers for three games of triples.

Doug Hudson, Lex Lowe and Michael Harvey were the winners by an impressive +15 margin over David ‘Ooze’ Knight, Peter McMahon and Jason Howell.

The hapless trio could do nothing to stop Team Hudson’s run of high scoring ends!

Howell’s new bowls required quite a bit of adjusting to apparently!

The runners-up on a countback were the team of Don Roberts, John Goonrey and Isaac ‘Packie’ Kershaw who accounted for Gerard Livingston, Karen Daly and David Kershaw by a margin of +4.

Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey, Tony Polack and Allan Gardoll also ended up as +4 victors over David Schofield, Greg Clark and David Thomas.

Numbers dwindle as the golf season winds down

The end of the Men’s Golf season is only weeks away but some players have already moved on to cricket, and so numbers have been down in the competitions of late.

There were seven players on Wednesday, which is about average for the mid-week competition.

Matt Russell, who doesn’t play a lot of golf these days, decided to play in the mid-week competition and won the day by a stunning six shots with a score of 40 points.

Too far back to be even noticed was Ron Craw on 34 and Bill Fugar was a further two shots back on 32.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Fugar on the 3rd hole and Ray Yench on the 8th.

The five players who turned up for Saturday’s game only got nine holes in before the storm ended any hopes of finishing the round.

It was a much better day on Sunday but still there were only eight golfers who played in an individual Stableford game.

Ray Yench had the best score of the day with 38 points, followed by Mark Martin one shot back on 37 and Greg Clark was third on 34.

Of note was that Max Phillips only scored 26 points.

Only two Nearest the Pin prizes were won,

by Mick Harvey on the 3rd hole and Yench on the 7th.

A Four-ball-worst ball game will be played on Saturday and an individual Stableford will be contested on Sunday.

The following Saturday is Ernie Potter Memorial Day, the annual grudge match between the Bushies and the Townies.

It’s come to notice that Michael Bannister has been holding clandestine meetings with his committee trying to come up with a plan to defeat the usually well-prepared David ‘Ooze’ Knight.

This year the rules are to be decided by Knight and won’t be revealed until the very last minute.—Out of Bounds
