2024 Cobar Show was one of the best yet!

Despite a dump of 52mm of rain on Friday, this year’s Cobar Show has been hailed as a resounding success. The committee scrambled and re-scheduled a number of events (including the CSA fireworks display) to Saturday and show-goers responded with a big crowd attending on Day 2. Commissioner’s award for Nymagee’s fire brigade captain

NSW Rural Fire Service Nymagee Brigade Captain David Betts received a Commissioner’s Certificate of Commendation for outstanding fire service duty.

Captain Betts was presented with the commendation by NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Rob Rogers AFSM at the 2024 St Florian’s Day Ceremony at the RFS Training Academy in Dubbo on Saturday.

He was recognised for his contribution to Nymagee Brigade, his leadership and his skills in responding to incidents.

Captain Betts joined the Nymagee Brigade in 1982, becoming an active valued member.

In 2000 he became Senior Deputy Captain and in 2005 accepted the role of Captain.

Captain Betts has taken control of many incidents within his brigade area and also responded to assist neighbouring brigades on numerous occasions.

He is acknowledged and respected by members and staff as an effective and capable fireground leader.

In February 2023 the Nymagee area experienced increased fire activity from dangerous weather conditions.

Under Captain Betts’ leadership, a fire at Yarranvale was contained (after burning 193 hectares) by crews.

Later that afternoon he organised more resources (including water bombing aircraft) to contain a fire on Etiwanda Station to just 70 hectares and oversaw the patrolling of the fire grounds for the next few days.

His actions and dedications made him a worthy recipient of the Commissioner’s Commendation.

Students will be hurt by budget cuts Cobar High School principal Shane Carter is worried that budget cuts to NSW public schools will significantly impact the students at Cobar High.

Mr Carter notified the school community last week there would be changes to the school’s everyday operations following an announcement by the NSW Minister for Education Prue Car and Department of Education Secretary Murat Dizdar that the school’s funding for the year ahead would be reduced.

Mr Carter worked with the school’s executive staff to see where they could “trim” their 2024 budget going back through the school’s historical records to see where they could “take money from”.

As a result of the budget cuts, Mr Cater last week advised students and parents there would be immediate changes to the school curriculum.

In Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8), the numeracy classes have gone, along with the ‘Self Select Class’ due to a reduction in school personnel.

In Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10), literacy lessons will be absorbed back into mainstream classes.

Mr Carter said this was again due to a reduction of school personnel.

He said the end of year Attendance and Uniform acknowledgement excursion is another activity that has been abolished.

Mr Carter said in addition, the school has also lost funds they had set aside for future projects, which included planting trees and other maintenance improvement jobs around the school.

“That was a kick in the backside,” he said.

Mr Carter said while the budget cuts will not immediately affect teaching staff, it has however affected Student Learning Support Officers (SLSO’s) and their hours have been drastically reduced.

He said they were only given a short amount of time to work out a new operating plan.

“The bottom line is the kids and that’s the big thing that we’re focusing on.

“We’re mindful that every decision we make is going to impact them,” Mr Carter said.

CHS rise to the challenge

Cobar High School (CHS) students have for the third year in a row won the Outback Science and Engineering Challenge. (Pictured are some of the CHS team members, Sosie Barton, Tom Francisco, Rhys Cull and Sophie Bennett.) They finished with 1,401.72 points (out of a possible maximum score of 1,600 points). St John’s Primary School were second on 1,125.02. CHS won seven of the 15 activities (including getting a huge score in Confounding Communications) and were also second in another four. The Outback Challenge is part of a nationwide STEM outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle in partnership with the community, the Rotary Club of Cobar, the mines and sponsors. Through the provision of hands-on experiences, the Challenge aims to inspire more young people to make a difference in the world by choosing a career in Science and Engineering.

Showing their appreciation

State Emergency Services (SES) Deputy Commander of the Upper West Zone, Superintendent Colin Jones was in Cobar on Monday to present Kayla Ohlsen from the Cobar SES Unit with a Commissioner’s Certificate of Appreciation. The Cobar Unit was awarded the certificate in recognition of the critical role its members played in supporting and protecting the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Between 1 February 2020 through to 11 October 2021 NSW SES members displayed resilience, agility and fortitude in adapting existing work models to undertake business during the COVID-19 Pandemic,” the certificate, signed by NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York APM, reads.

Cobar can expect more rain ahead

After a huge dumping of 52.2mm last Friday and early Saturday morning in town, it’s looking like we’re in for some more wet weather in the week ahead.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology there’s a high chance we’ll get more rain at the end of this week with showers of up to 20mm and thunderstorms expected on Friday.

Saturday is also expected to be a rainy day with a 70 percent chance of up to 15mm.

More rain is expected on Sunday and Monday.

The Bureau reports we had 52.6mm of rain in Cobar last week (some residents received up to 59mm in their backyard gauges while 41mm was recorded in the rain gauge on Friday at the showground).

Cathy Francisco reports they had 41mm in the north of the shire on Friday while down south, 39mm landed in the gauge at Four Corners and 57 was recorded at Etiwanda.

The Bureau predicts a maximum of 22 degrees for today and tomorrow should also reach 22 with a slight chance of afternoon showers.

The temperature should only reach a top of 18 on both Friday and Saturday before warming slightly to 19 on Sunday and 20 on Monday.

Temperatures last week were mostly close to average for this time of the year with 23.4 degrees the maximum recorded last Wednesday, which was our warmest day of the week.

Thursday was similar with 23.3 degrees the recorded top.

Friday was cold and raining and it only reached a maximum of 16.1 degrees.

The sun shone on Saturday for the Cobar Show and produced a pleasant top of 19.2 degrees.

The sunny days continued on Sunday (with a top of 19.8) and Monday (21.2).

“Intergenerational learning and connection is also really important.

“It’s something I’ve learned through the movement and something that I inspire to be able to share with others as well,” Ms Milton Smith said.

A couple is lucky to have escaped serious injury following a single vehicle accident that occurred 85km west of Cobar on the Barrier Highway on Saturday.

Cobar police and paramedics attended the scene of the accident at around 1.20pm on Saturday.

The white 2016 Subaru Forester was being driven by a 67 year old female and travelling east when it veered off the road and nosedived into a drain.

The vehicle then rolled a couple of times and ended up on its roof. It is estimated to have travelled almost 90 metres after leaving the roadway.

The 70 year old male passenger in the vehicle was transported by paramedics to Cobar hospital suffering back pain.

He was discharged later that afternoon.

The female driver was subjected to a random breath test which returned a negative result for alcohol.

It’s believed fatigue was a contributing factor to the crash.

Police arrest man after DV assault

Police located and arrested a 29 year old man who was wanted over a Domestic Violence incident.

It’s alleged the incident took place in the early hours of Friday morning.

After an active search for the man, police located him just before 7pm that night walking along the road in Wattle Drive.

The man, who has resided in Cobar for the past year, was arrested and charged with two counts of Domestic Violence Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.

He was refused bail and will appear at court at a later date.

CSA Mine is one of Australia’s longest operating copper mines with a history stretching back almost 150 years. At 1.9 kilometers deep, CSA is the second deepest copper mine in Australia and the third highest copper grade in the world. Located near the NSW town of Cobar, CSA Mine employs around 550 people and produces approximately 40,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year. The ore is mined and processed on site and then transported by rail 700km to the Port of Newcastle for export. CSA Mine was acquired by Metals Acquisition Limited in June 2023.

Forbes rider takes home four titles from Cobar Show Despite the 52mm of rain recorded in town on Friday, the equestrian events at this year’s Cobar Show all still went ahead.

Rain interrupted the Aurelia Metals two day program, but all events were still held, albeit some with delayed starts.

Brooke Kelly from Forbes had a very successful competition winning the Supreme Led Breed Horse of the Show, Supreme Ridden Breed Horse of the Show, the Supreme Ridden Show Hunter and Supreme Rider of the Show titles.

Michael Christie (from Sydney) won the Supreme Hack of the Show award.

Elise Smith from Bourke was the Supreme Champion Ridden Local Hack Rider on Friday.

Declan Sharpe won the Allan and Cecilia Wells Memorial Award for an Outstanding Effort by a Local Rider.

A convincing win The Golfie bowls Singles Championship game on Sunday between David ‘Ooze’ Knight and John ‘Shark’ Daly was won convincingly by ‘Ooze’ on +9.

‘Ooze’ now goes through to play Jim Goonrey in the next round.

The Under 9s played their very first away game coming up against Dubbo Macquarie.

The team showed plenty of skills and a lot of pace to run in six tries in the match.

Four tries were scored by Jason Cleary which helped to earn him the Players’ Player award.

Maddox Best also touched down for a try along with Jake Prendergast.

Jake also picked up the Coaches Award.

The Cobar Under 9s side at Dubbo on Saturday. It was the players first away game after moving up from the Under 8s mini league town competition last season.

Small field of three A very small field of three shooters competed in the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s 10m Air Pistol event on Sunday with Michael Garbutt acting as Range Officer.

A very good score by Russel Smith earnt him a new handicap.

Smith shot 398 off pistol and, with his allocated handicap of 350, he finished with a total score of 748, and a new handicap of 182.

Robert Neate scored 515 and, with his handicap of 66, finished with a total score of 581.

With Tyler Clark’s score off pistol of 193, combined with his handicap of 350, he finished with a total score of 543.

This week’s event will be a 25m Standard Pistol shoot.

Visitors are always welcome to participate or watch the action.

Timing was off for local golfers

While last week’s rain was welcomed the timing could not have been worse for local golf competitions.

As a result of the 52mm recorded on Friday, the Men’s Open was called off as was the ladies Pennants game against Warren that was to have been played on Friday.

This round will now be played in Cobar later this month. Players are requested to nominate ASAP. Cobar will then travel to Warren next month.

The only match that went ahead last week was Wednesday’s Ladies Stableford event.

A three-way countback was needed to determine the winner after 33 points were scored by all three players.

Julie Livingston came out on top from Sally Bannister and Ann Dunn.

Jannine Wilkin placed 4th with 32 points.

No A Grader could stay on the 7th for a Nearest the Pin win.

Jannine Wilkin was closest to the flag for B Grade and Dunn won C Grade.

All eyes will be on the heavens once again this week and praying for dry conditions for the Legends Pro Am this Saturday and Sunday.

Camels make a promising start to season The Cobar Rugby Union Club kicked off its 2024 Western Plains Rugby season making a promising start by recording a win over Gulargambone at the Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval on Saturday. In a see-sawing spectacle, the Cobar Camels deservedly emerged victorious, 29-22. Pictured above was Cobar’s most valuable man on the field, Brandon ‘Chucky’ Jones (with the ball) who scored two tries and had a hand in a third which helped the Camels to their thrilling win.
