Cobar High School has welcomed two new staff and three other familiar faces to their school staff this year. Brittany Daymond, originally from Sydney, has previously taught in casual roles at Mudgee, Dubbo and Trangie and, at Cobar High, will teach Stage 4 Numeracy, Year 11 Work Studies and act as a relief teacher; Yvonne Ferguson from Nowra is relieving Ms Barber in the School Counselling Role; a former Student Learning Support Officer at the school since 2021, Tia Turner is now qualified as a conditional teacher, and will teach PDHPE and English; local and former Cobar High student who graduated in 2018, Jasey Bruce, has returned to the school as an administration officer; and Todd Fugar, a past student and teacher, is back in Cobar after teaching at Tweed River High School for the past nine years.

Cobar Shire is to benefit from more than $1.29 million invested into key community projects under Round Five of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.

NSW Nationals Upper House MP Sam Farraway recently visited Cobar with NSW Nationals Candidate for Barwon Annette Turner OAM to announce the funding.

Mr Farraway said the announcement would cover the costs of upgrades to Ward Oval and the revitalisation of Euabalong Hall.

“I am thrilled to announce that $1,292,808 will be provided to Cobar under the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund to cover the costs of upgrades to Ward Oval and the Euabalong Hall,” he said.

“As part of the Ward Oval Masterplan, this funding will see six lighting towers constructed to illuminate the fields with new energyefficient lighting which will enhance the night life of the facilities and cut down energy costs.

“Sports play a crucial role in the growth and development of our youth, and I am proud to see funding from the Stronger Country Communities Fund also going to the Cobar Little Athletics which will see new discus nets and shotput circles as well as synthetic grass around the long jump pit installed.”

Mr Farraway also announced funding for the Euabalong community hall.

“As one of the area’s only event spaces, this funding will be used to address safety issues and to make the hall a safe, appealing and functional space for local residents, the broader district and tourists.

“The revitalisation of the oval and hall will provide spaces for the community to come together, foster new relationships and create memories that will last a lifetime.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said in the past five years the Stronger Country Communities Fund had delivered more than 2,000 grassroots projects, benefitting every Local Government Area in regional NSW. “We all know how important it is for communities to have great places to come together to build social connections and boost their wellbeing through sport or community events,” Mr Toole said.

“It’s the little things that make a big difference to the way we all work, live, play and do business.”

Death of country pubs and clubs

The introduction of a Cashless Gaming Card is expected to be ‘the death’ of country pubs and clubs.

That’s the view of Cobar Services Club secretary/manager Linda Carter who raised her concerns about the NSW Government’s proposed Cashless Gaming Card legislation with State Member for Barwon, Roy Butler when he visited Cobar last week.

“I told him it would be the death of small clubs in his electorate,” Mrs Carter said.

“The revenue we take out of poker machines is part of our cash flow, and without it, we won’t survive.

“There’s very little information about how it will work, what the rules are, how you increase or decrease your limit, and who does the application for the card [the club or the gambler themselves],” she said.

Mr Butler said the aim of the cashless gaming card is a way of dealing with problem gambling and money laundering.

“However, the government has only just passed the scheme by cabinet and the Premier has only just announced his plans - which includes a specific fund to help regional clubs implement the cashless technology (in the form of no-interest loans),” Mr Butler said.

“I agree that something definitely needs to be done about problem gambling and money laundering, but we will need to look carefully at the details, assess the merits of the scheme and consult with the communities in Barwon to see what the impact would be on those communities, and the venues that have to implement it.

“Then we can see where we go from there.

“I have heard concerns from many small clubs out in the bush, where they don’t have the same amount of patrons, employees or gambling revenue coming through as big metropolitan clubs, about whether this reform is affordable for them to implement (even with the availability of no-interest loans).

“Many are already struggling under increased insurance premiums and the need to meet other requirements of Liquor and Gaming laws, such as putting on extra security staff at live music events, although the government is also offering one-off grants to fund alternative revenue streams to pokies.

“The cashless gaming card will also only treat one symptom of the problem, but not the root causes, it will not do anything to stop people turning to the multitude of other forms of gambling available,” Mr Butler said.

He said it’s imperative that the scheme does not adversely affect other community members, and clubs and pubs.

Man charged with attempt to pervert course of justice A 70 year old Cobar man has recently been charged by police with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The man was charged by police in relation to an alleged incident that occurred in Nyngan last October.

He is expected to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney in September to answer the charge.

Training exercise in Cobar

Ten members of the School of Infantry at Singleton and training staff were in Cobar recently to take part in a Mercedes G Wagon Drivers’ Training Course. The 16 day course covers the four wheel drive and six wheel drive variants of the Army G Wagon vehicles. As part of the training, the group travelled to Ivanhoe and back on some of Cobar Shire’s most challenging dirt roads. New staff welcomed aboard

Farmers concerned about ‘fire bomb’ The NSW Farmers association is concerned we could be facing mass bushfires at the end of the year.

NSW Farmers Head of Policy and Advocacy Annabel Johnson said after a wet couple of years, there urgently needs to be a crackdown on public land managers letting weeds grow out of control.

“During Black Summer we saw horrific fires as a result of the disastrous ‘lock it up’ approach to land management,” Ms Johnson said.

“We’ve seen huge parts of the state converted into National Parks and just locked up in the name of conservation, and this is where the next fire risk will come from!

“The decision makers need to come to their

senses and listen to the people who experience these natural disasters firsthand, and make sure there is an embedded strategy that will effect change in the short and long term.”

She said Australia had a long history of wet years which were followed by fires.

“I’ve heard of whole farms being incinerated and the people only barely making it out alive, and that was before we had these huge National Park tinderboxes everywhere,” Ms Johnson said.

“For the most part farmers and private landholders are actively managing their properties, but there simply are not enough resources to do the same on public lands and this will surely lead to catastrophe.”

Water security $8.24M project nears completion The $8.24 million Nyngan Cobar Water Security Project is nearing completion and will deliver a new 650 megalitre storage dam to provide water security for the Nyngan community thanks to the NSW Government.

Minister for Water Kevin Anderson visited the site in Nyngan on Monday to see how work was progressing on the project that will help drought proof water supplies for Nyngan and Cobar.

“Water security is at the forefront of the NSW Nationals’ agenda when it comes to delivering for regional communities,” Mr Anderson said.

“It is great to see progress being made on the storage dam, which is located next to another $10 million storage reservoir, pump station and 1.8-kilometre pipeline that we built in 2019 during the height of the state’s worst drought.

“The two storage dams will double the storage capacity for Nyngan and Cobar holding up to 1,300 megalitres of water.

“To put this in perspective, Nyngan uses 600 megalitres of water every year which means the new reservoirs can hold an extra two years’ worth of water supply which is great news for the region.

“We are also funding repair work on the first dam over the next few months, including installing a synthetic clay lining to prevent leaks.”

Nyngan and Cobar’s town water supply comes from a weir in the Bogan River which is topped up by water from the Macquarie River via the Albert Priest Channel when flows are low.

Mr Anderson said new storage dams will provide an important back-up water supply for the towns which are some of the driest locations in the state.

“While these areas have experienced record rainfalls and flooding over the past 12 months, it was only a few years ago that Nyngan and Cobar looked like a moonscape and they were on the verge of running out of water,” Mr Anderson said.

“That is why the NSW Government has also invested $4 million to build a new bore to the north-east of Nyngan to provide another water supply to lean on, as well as providing $2 million to carry out emergency repairs to the 65km Albert Priest Channel pipeline to fix leaks and disruptions to the system.”

Nyngan Mayor Glenn Neill said it was a great example of the local council working collaboratively with the NSW Government to boost drought resilience and improve long -term water supply and storage for the town.

“We have a proven track record of working hand-in-hand with the State Government to deliver infrastructure that is going to put Nyngan in a stronger position to manage a more variable climate,” Mayor Neill said.

“Out here, water security is the number one issue and without investment and support from the NSW Government we wouldn’t be able to build new reservoirs, pump stations, pipelines and bores.

“We have worked hard to get the new storage dam finished despite significant weather delays and once it is up and running it will be a great asset for the region,” he said.

Warmer weather

After some mild February days, the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting temperatures in Cobar will creep back up to 40 degrees by the weekend.

According to the Bureau, Saturday will be our hottest day of the week with an expected top of 40 degrees as the gauge climbs from an expected top today of 37 degrees.

There’s a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm this evening which should cool things off marginally with 35 the expected maximum for tomorrow.

Friday’s top should also reach 35 before the spike to 40 on Saturday.

The mercury should then drop overnight back down to 35 degrees on Sunday.

Continued sunny weather is predicted for the start of the working week, with 34 degrees the expected top temperature for Monday.

Daytime temperatures in Cobar were a mixed bag last week with the Bureau recording temperatures ranging from 35.2 degrees last Monday (our hottest day of the week) down to 24.9 degrees on Friday, which was our coolest day of the week.

Wednesday and Thursday were warm days with 33 and 33.3 degrees respectively recorded by the Bureau.

Saturday was a mild day with a top of 26.9 degrees while Sunday was warmer with the mercury climbing to a top of 31.5.

No rain was recorded by the Bureau in Cobar over the past week but we do have a reasonable chance of some rain this week with showers predicted for tomorrow.

Preschool all set for the new year

Cobar Preschool Centre held an Open Day on Friday and welcomed new families to come and have a look around the facilities prior to the centre re-opening this week for the new preschool year. A four-legged furry friend starts school at CPS Cobar Public School (CPS) has welcomed lots of new faces to the school this year, including one very cute therapy dog.

Alby, an almost two year old Labradoodle (half Labrador, half Poodle), has joined the CPS team after recently completing an intensive clinical training course with Therapy Dogs Australia.

Research has shown that therapy dogs in schools have many benefits for both students and staff.

As CPS did not previously have access to animal assisted therapy to support their students emotionally and academically, one of the school’s teachers, Edyn Maybury, volunteered to train her dog Alby.

Alby and Miss Maybury recently graduated as a certified Human-Canine Clinical Therapy Team.

Alby can provide companionship and emotional comfort to students, assist in practising socialisation, reduce sadness, stress, and loneli-

ness, as well being used as a motivational tool for students.

Alby will be based in Miss Maybury’s MultiCategorical class while she is teaching, and he will also be able to visit other classes when Miss Maybury is off class.

As Miss Maybury is the only certified handler at CPS, he’ll be with her at all times when he is at school.

Alby will be involved in school events and assist Miss Maybury on playground duty.

To begin with, Alby will be working alternately two days one week and three the next.

When he’s not working, Alby likes spending time at home hanging out with his younger sister Scout (who also has aspirations of joining the Therapy Dog Team when she’s old enough).

Alby also likes exercising at the Newy and socializing.

He’s regularly at Gumnuts Café on Saturday mornings waiting for pats and has requested Puppachinos be permanently added to their menu.

If you see Alby out and about, Miss Maybury welcomes you to come up and say ‘Hi’.

Service medal for local firefighter Fire and Rescue NSW Cobar Station 256 acting captain, Alex Lennon, was presented with a National Emergency Services Medal on Monday night at the Cobar Fire Station.

The medal is awarded to persons who have rendered significant service during nationallysignificant emergencies in Australia.

Acting Captain Lennon received the honour in recognition of his firefighting efforts during the Black Summer Bushfires in the Blue Mountains in December 2019/January 2020.

The then deputy captain and the Cobar station’s Black Panther Bulk Water Tanker, were tasked, along with other Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters, firefighters from NSW National Cobar Public School teacher Edyn Maybury with her very cute Labradoodle, Alby. The Parks and Wildlife as well as staff from the pair have recently undergone Animal Assisted Therapy Human-Canine Clinical Team NSW Forestry Corporation, to defend the 130 year old Jenolan Caves House, which they did, Training and will use their skills to help students and staff at the school. ▪ Contributed successfully!

Bushfire control work carried out Cobar, Euabalong West, Nymagee and Louth are among 21 towns and villages in Far West NSW which have been identified as in need of bushfire control work.

Crown Lands and the Rural Fire Service have been working together to undertake safety work in various outback communities as the normally dry and arid landscape has undergone significant vegetation growth following ongoing rain.

Crown Lands Executive Director of Land and Asset Management Greg Sullivan said ongoing wet weather linked to repeated La Nina weather conditions has seen many parts of the Far West’s normally dry and barren areas transformed with dense vegetation growth.

“It is quite a natural phenomenon as areas of red dirt transform into a green landscape, but with it comes an increased risk of summer bushfires that now need to be managed,” Mr Sullivan said.

Crown Lands has used aerial imagery to provide a bird’s eye view of vegetation growth further supported by on-ground inspections with the Rural Fire Service to assess and map strategic placement of fire breaks and fire trails.

Rural Fire Service Assistant Commissioner Jayson McKellar said that while wet conditions and green growth have been a welcome change for some communities they have also created increased risk as hot weather dries vegetation creating highly flammable fuel loads.

“This new growth is creating a substantial risk and so we have activated mitigation crews to work on strategic vegetation clearing and management for bush fire preparedness across many Far West communities,” Assistant Commissioner McKellar said.

“The crews will continue to maintain asset protection zones and fire breaks around towns and villages as well as ensuring fire trails are in good shape for response to fires.”

Marking the 20th annual Safer Internet Day, Optus yesterday announced an expansion to its Digital Thumbprint Program to provide more opportunities for students to learn about digital safety and wellbeing.

Cobar primary students in years 3 and 4 classrooms can be among the first to experience the expanded digital educational program, focusing on kids staying safe when on games and apps, and keeping information private online.

Year 5 and 6 students will be able to access a program tailored to deal with cyberbullying and having respectful online relationships.

The expansion of the Optus Digital Thumbprint program offers a variety of resources for parents, teachers, and trusted adults to facilitate conversations with kids.

Primary teachers can register their classroom for free online training and gain access to quizzes, teaching resources, and interactive games.

State Member talks to locals State Member for Barwon Roy Butler was in Cobar last week chatting to locals as part of his regular rounds of the electorate.

Mr Buter said various topics were raised during a walk around the CBD including the proposed introduction of a cashless gaming card, security arrangements at pubs and clubs, rising insurance premiums and the increasing cost of living.

The upcoming State Election was also a topic of conversation locals were keen to speak to Mr Butler about.

In particular, residents wanted to know how things will change now that Mr Butler has resigned from the SFF Party (Shooters, Fishers and Farmers) and has chosen to run as an Independent candidate.

“Well, for one thing I have to fund and organise my own campaign,” Mr Butler told The Cobar Weekly.

“But otherwise it will be business as usual.

“None of my core values have changed, I am still representing the people of Barwon, listening to their concerns and taking them to parliament.

“In a way I already operated a bit like an independent in parliament,” Mr Butler said.

“Hopefully the voters will see that I am honest, hard-working and have their best interests at heart, regardless of whether I am an independent or a member of a party.”

Mr Butler said he thinks it could be a “dangerous alternative” if the seat of Barwon were to be won by a major party.

“In which case Barwon would effectively lose its independence, politically, and its member would be unable to criticise the government or operate in the best interests of Barwon where it conflicts with party policy,” he said.

Mr Butler said he expects his run into the election will be difficult.

“As always I will work hard for the people of Barwon.

“In my term I have attracted record funding for the electorate (electorate specific funding in the budget has gone from $132 million in 2016-2017 before I was elected to $907 million in the 22/23 Financial Year).

“I want to see the record funding and attention we are experiencing maintained.

“If it’s a minority Government, and that appears likely, the crossbench has a disproportionate amount of influence in Government decisions.

“That’s the position I want Barwon to continue to hold,” Mr Butler said.

Charge Up Operator – Production CSA Mine, Cobar, NSW Job Ref: CSA0279 CSA Mine is looking for an experienced Production Stope Charge Up Operator to join the team. You will work in a team that is focused on safety, while driving to meet the plan. You will work in one of the world’s most iconic mining districts, which has the second highest grade copper mine in the country.

About the role: • Effectively preparing and charging production drill holes to deliver stope firing on target • Charging production stopes and development headings • Reading and understanding production drill and charge-up plans • Hanging and removal of vent bag, air and water services • Having a strong commitment and attitude toward Safety, Health and Environment The successful applicant will have: • Current Australian Driver’s Licence (minimum P2 or equivalent) • Working at Heights qualification • UHL/BEUL certification or willingness and ability to obtain prior to commencement (essential) • Previous underground mining experience (Production Stope Charging and mining operations) • Previous experience operating an MCU or similar blast product delivery vehicle (desired) • Experience with electronic blasting systems (advantageous) Conditions This position is offered on a residential or drive in drive out (DIDO) basis on 7/7 roster. The competition has just gotten serious Help with travel The weekly competition at the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club events has gotten very serious and to win, members need to swim a very good time.

In last Tuesday’s 50 metres handicapped freestyle swim all of the 13 competitors finished within one and a half seconds of their nominated times.

Murray Harland was the best of the bunch winning the event with a time of 0.12 seconds outside his nominated time.

Shane Josephson finished second (0.16 seconds) and Dave Mexted was narrowly behind in third place on 0.19.

Paul Swainston claimed line honours in the 30m swim when he finished within 0.03 seconds of his nominated time.

Kyle Roberts was a touch behind on 0.06 with Bill Fugar, breathing down his neck, finishing within 0.07 seconds of his time for third place.

Jason Toomey was out in front in the 100m swim, but only narrowly. He won with a time of 0.22 seconds off his nominated time with Matt Harland second on 0.25.

Swainston collected third place with 0.34.

Toomey teamed up with Greg Dimond to win the Brace Relay novelty event.

The pair swam to within 0.09 seconds of their combined nominated time to win over Matt Harland and Bob Clark, who grabbed second spot with 0.13.

Mexted and Swainston finished third with 0.68.

The Cobar Yabbies will be packing their bags this week in readiness for the Western Districts Swimming Carnival to be contested at Wellington on the weekend.

Cobar swimmers will compete against other swimmers from around the region in handicapped and sprint races along with relay events.

Cobar’s sports stars and teams, along with others from across Far West NSW, will be able to travel to games with ease thanks to a transport trial being introduced by the NSW Government.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said the Western Region Sport and Active Recreation Transport Program will subsidise the cost of fuel, bus hire or other public transport on trips of 100 kilometres or more, saving money for families and clubs.

“This two-year pilot, which started on January 30 will help reduce barriers to participation in sport and active recreation, which local groups have identified as a challenge in the far west,” Mr Farraway said.

“When people have to travel hundreds of kilometres to play in a match or attend training for a representative side, the costs can be huge, particularly with the price of fuel at the moment.

“These are costs borne by players and their families, and subsidising their travel will help keep the pressure off household budgets and allow our young future sports stars to keep achieving their sporting dreams.”

President of the Cobar Swimming Club Simone Neyland said sport is important to towns like Cobar.

“Staying connected with sport and fitness is essential to the wellbeing of people, especially kids, but the distances to get involved can be huge and the costs can be a burden.

“I drive my son to swimming meets all over the western region and beyond,” Simone said.

“My nephew has to travel a long way to play in his rugby league competition, and there are many people who do this, so anything to help make these trips easier financially would be a huge help to many families I’m sure.”

The trial was developed after consulting with key groups.

Sporting teams, clubs, schools, and other not-for-profit organisations based in Cobar, Menindee, Wilcannia and Broken Hill can apply for assistance up to 14 days prior to attendance at an eligible competition or event.

The funding provided will be based on fuel costs and average fuel consumption by vehicle type, such as bus, mini-bus or car or the cost of a ticket on a public transport service such as train.

Ray Yench was two shots further back in second place after finishing with 31 stableford points.

Brien Obray picked up the only Nearest to the Pin prize on the day, which he won on the 8th hole.

This week the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club golf course grounds staff will be replacing the sand on the greens, so they will be ready for the new golf season which kicks off at the beginning of March.—Three Aces

Cobar Swimming Club member Henry Knight competed in 11 events at the two day Western Area Championships in Gulgong on the weekend. Game ends in a thrilling tie

The Senior Cricket 40 Overs match between Golf Club and Nymagee Magpies ended in a thrilling tie on Saturday.

Batting first, Golf Club scored 108 runs in 35.2 overs, with Jake Harbison their topscorer with 50 runs off 89 balls (including three fours and a six).

Jason Hampel also contributed 33 runs off 29 balls.

The bowling attack for Nymagee Magpies was led by Adam Buckman who took four wickets in four overs and only conceded nine runs.

Phil Harley took 2/12 off his six overs.

In reply, Nymagee were dismissed in 37.1 overs, also for a total of 108 runs.

Jacob King, with 39 runs off 50 balls, topscored for Nymagee with extras, the second top scorer with 27 (including 22 wides).

Needing one run to win with one wicket in hand, Golf Club’s bowler Jason Hampel knocked over Nymagee batter Adam Buckman to seal the thrilling tie.

In the Under 11 Boys age division, Thomas Knight finished 7th in Discus and recorded a PB (personal best), was 11th in Shot Put and 14th in Long Jump.
