Drilling results were outstanding

Locals take back the night

Helix Resources Limited is reporting “outstanding” results from their recent Downhole Electromagnetic (DHEM) survey.

Helix’s managing director Mike Rosenstrich last week reported deep drilling at their Canbelego Joint venture had yielded a major conductive copper target and confirmed their main lode continuity.

“The DHEM response we have at Canbelego is outstanding—it is intense, large scale and corroborated by earlier surveys which couldn’t quite penetrate deep enough to “illuminate” this new conductor,” Mr Rosenstrich reported.

“These results potentially highlight a major new mineralized position – never seen before by a local DHEM and never drilled before.”

He said the positive early outcomes vindicated their decision “to be bold and drill deep”.

City student doctors get a taste of country medicine Cobar is currently hosting two student doctors from Sydney’s University of Notre Dame to get a taste of what being a country doctor is really like.

Hannah Nobes is on her second week of placement here in Cobar and has been spending her time at the Lilliane Brady Village retirement home and the Cobar Primary Health Care Centre.

Xanthie Volckmar has commenced her two weeks of placement on Monday.

The pair were to have had a tour of the hospital yesterday and will also be spending time at The John Mitchell Pharmacy and hope to talk to any high school students interested in studying medicine during their placement.

Hannah and Xanthie have both completed four years of Medical Science as well as their first year of Postgrad.

They applied for scholarships for a rural placement program which is run by the Rural Doctors Network who are working with the Country Women’s Association (CWA) and local councils to help entice doctors to rural settings.

The program aims to give students an introduction to working in rural areas and to showcase what life as a rural doctor could look like.

“It’s sort of a taste for us and it’s been great,” Hannah told The Cobar Weekly on Monday.

Both have an interest in rural medicine.

“I’m from Cowra so I grew up in a rural area,” Hannah said.

“There’s a lot of disparities between healthcare and access to healthcare in rural areas and remote areas compared to urban centres.”

Hannah said it’s also country people who have “hardworking, salt of the earth ethics” that makes her want to work and serve a rural community.

Xanthie said while she grew up in Sydney, her mum is from Coolah, and she spent a lot of time there while growing up.

“I travelled around Australia last year and I got to experience all parts of Australia and for me, I think I’m just drawn to the rural lifestyle.

“I’ve only been here 24 hours and I already feel a bit more relaxed,” Xanthie said.

“Australia is so beautiful and I think you get so much more of that when you are out of the city. You really appreciate nature and how you

can get really involved in the community.

“Plus I’ve seen there is a huge need.

“Since starting medicine and having done a placement around Tamworth and speaking to the doctors there, that’s what really inspired me. They said their work is so fulfilling and meaningful and I just found that incredibly inspiring.

“For me, being a rural Generalist would be so interesting because you do something different everyday. I’m really attracted to being able to work in hospitals and work in GP practices and not be doing the same thing all the time.”

Both Hannah and Xanthie have also been on a number of GP placements in Sydney.

“It’s very much a case of you see a patient once and you might not see them again, whereas in a rural setting you can treat someone and you can also treat their whole family too,” Hannah said.

As part of the program, Hannah and Xanthie also get some free time to “play tourist” and the pair have visited the museum, Fort Bourke Hill Lookout and the Newey and are getting to know their way around town.

Both are looking forward to attending some of our social events this weekend including the Christmas Street Parade, the Pop Up Races and Carols by Candlelight.

Both said they have enjoyed visiting and will recommend Cobar to their fellow medical students as a work place where you can find a lot of variety.

“You’ve got miners, you’ve got an older population, you’ve also got the kids of miners and the pastoralists so I think that’s probably a draw card for a medical person,” Hannah said.

Xanthie will also recommend Cobar to those looking for a more relaxed, slower paced environment.

Student doctors Xanthie Volckmar and Hannah Nobes, who are studying Postgraduate Medicine at the University of Notre Dame in Sydney, are currently in Cobar getting an idea of what being a rural doctor is like. The placement is supported by the Rural Doctors Network, CWA and Cobar Shire Council.

Community sadly farewells one of its “good blokes”

The Cobar community farewelled “a good bloke” last week after Rod Lumber suddenly passed away. Rod was 65 and was still doing what he loved, working in the bush. ▪ Photo contributed

Rodney Maxwell Lumber, known to most as ‘Rod’, was laid to rest last week at Cobar cemetery after his sudden passing on November 15.

In his eulogy, delivered by his brother Gary at his funeral at St Paul’s Anglican Church on Thursday, Rod was well summed up as being a “good bloke”.

“Rod was generous to a fault with a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone without any expectation of a reward,” Gary said.

“It was a shock and a surprise when Rod passed away as I thought he was indestructible.

“He had many accidents, scrapes and stitches throughout his life which he always seemed to walk away from with just another scar.”

Gary recalled a number of the accidents and scrapes, including surviving swimming in an irrigation channel as a very young boy, breaking his leg after getting knocked off his bike, a car accident in his beloved muscle car (a Chrysler Charger with the hemi pacer engine) and later a knee injury from playing Old Boys football that left him with a permanent limp.

After growing up in Victoria, the Lumber family moved to Binnaway in NSW and then to Coonabarabran where Rod completed his schooling.

“Rod wasn’t overly interested in school even though he was probably the smartest of us all,” Gary said.

“He was more interested in sport and worked hard whenever it came to sport and never gave up.”

When he left school, Rod moved to Queanbeyan where he started work as a telegram boy at the post office and lived with Gary.

“He played Aussie Rules for Queanbeyan.

“His stint here ended when he was knocked off his bike and broke his leg,” Gary said.

“After recuperating and observing the other telegram boy who walked like a stiff legged puppet because of all the accidents he had been in, Rod headed off to Sydney to Postal School in 1976.”

After finishing Postal School, Rod was posted to Cobar “to the bush that he loved”.

Gary said for Rod the bush was one of the three main loves in his life—the other two being his family and the Souths Rabbitohs NRL team.

“After a while the shine wore off the post office and this was followed by a stint at air conditioner manufacture and installation but eventually he found a home as a shearer.

“This was the lifestyle Rod was made for and he loved it,” Gary said.

However shearing meant Rod would regularly be away from home and its physicality also put a strain on his body.

He tried working for a short time in the mines and then worked for Peter Payne at the New Occidental Hotel.

“He very much enjoyed his time there,” Gary said.

In his younger days, Rod played rugby league with the Cobar Roosters and later Thirty Thirds Rugby Union and eventually Old Boys Rugby.

“An Old Boys game was the only time all four of us boys played for the same team,” Gary said.

After his knee surgery from an Old Boys Rugby game, Rod was advised to rest for six weeks however he only rested for 4-5 days.

“That probably didn’t help but in ‘Rod-style’ he said a man can’t be expected to sit around for that length of time,” Gary said.

Rod went back to mining and then in his 60s he returned to shearing.

“The 200-a-day was long gone but he was back doing what he loved. He was shearing at Young when he passed away.”

Rod was 65 and is survived by his wife Christine (the love of his life), sons Matt and Todd and extended family of daughter-in-law Kadri, five grandchildren, one great grandchild, his mother, three brothers and sister.

His family, along with a large crowd of friends, work mates and people he’d played sport with, attended his funeral last week to pay their final respects.

Tours with a Twist

To celebrate the first anniversary of its re-opening to the public, Cobar Shire Council offered free ‘Tours with a Twist’ of The Great Cobar Museum last Wednesday night.

Pictured is museum curator and storyteller, Kay Stingemore, leading one of the interactive tours. Visitors were assigned mining jobs at the start of their tours and found out information about different aspects of mining and various local characters who were involved in our mining history. At the conclusion of the tour, they collected their “pay cheques” at the pay office.

Council spreads Christmas cheer Excepting for the COVID years, Cobar Shire Council’s annual Seniors Christmas Party has traditionally been held just prior to the festive season.

It is just a small return to our community from our Council.

Each year the party has been well received by both old and young and this year’s version, in the refurbished Youth and Community Centre, was as good as I can remember.

The Council staff who helped out distinguished themselves even above their usual high standards such that I have received more praise this year than usual concerning their efforts.

Councillors also assisted with the supply of food and drinks, and a choir of young singers who all had voices far superior to mine entertained (which was a blessing as my voice has been oft described as similar to that of a cow’s husband).

Although I had nought to do with either the organisation or assistance with the running of the event, I take pride that all those who made the occasion such an outstanding success were given the appreciation they deserved.

Well done to all involved!

A cool change

Just when we thought the heat of summer had arrived, the Bureau of Meteorology is reporting we’re in for a cool change.

According to the Bureau, temperatures will drop to the mid 20s tomorrow and Friday before heating up again on the weekend.

Saturday should be sunny with a top of 30 degrees.

Sunday is expected to be slightly warmer with 33 degrees and a slight chance of rain.

The outlook for Monday is mild with 27 degrees the predicted top temperature.

It was a wet start to the festive season with large storms in and around the Cobar Shire last Thursday afternoon.

There was some heavy rainfall, gusty winds and reports of hail.

Cobar received a total of 17.6mm of rain in town while some landholders recorded much heavier rainfall.

Cathy Francisco from Carline Station (north of the shire) reported receiving 92mm in their gauge from just one storm!

Temperatures over the past week have been varied with last Thursday reaching 29.4 degrees while Friday was slightly cooler with 27.8 degrees the day time top.

The weekend was warmer with 28.6 on Bobbi Murray and Bec Crofts enjoyed working with polymer clay to create a pair of earrings at the CASP sponsored workshop at the Cobar Library on Saturday run by Saturday while Sunday’s mercury reached 31.4.

Workshop inspired by local metals Fire had potential to be a nightmare A workshop to make earrings inspired by locally produced metals, copper and silver, was held on Saturday with the backing of the Country Arts Support Program (CASP).

The workshop, headed up by Meike Griffiths who owns local business, the Audacious Design Co, showed the 10 participants how to work with polymer clay.

They coloured the clay, molded it into their desired shapes which were then baked, sanded and finished to create a pair of earrings.

Meike demonstrated techniques she first learnt at a local workshop in July 2021 (run by MashUp) which she has further perfected since opening her business 13 months ago.

Making earrings first appealed to Meike as being a fun, creative outlet.

“Then I thought about making it into a business which offered me a bit of support, income -wise, with my husband changing jobs and taking on an apprenticeship.

“It was also something I could still do while looking after a newborn, being that it’s something I can just put down and come back to.

“It wasn’t like painting where you really had to sit there and get it done and then you have to clean up everything,” Meike said.

“With this you can just keep coming back to it when time allows, as the clay doesn’t dry out.”

The CASP workshop also had the support of Regional Arts NSW, the NSW Government and Cobar Shire Council and sold out quickly after it was first advertised.

Fire and Rescue NSW Station 256 Cobar crew responded to a rubbish fire in the main street on Thursday night.

Deputy Fire Captain Alex Lennon said they responded to the fire at around 9.20pm.

“We found a box on fire which were the remains of fireworks that had been set off on the pedestrian crossing out the front of the Commonwealth Bank,” Deputy Captain Lennon said.

“It was lucky the fireworks didn’t fall over and shoot any of the rockets into the historic buildings on the southern side of the street.

“If they caught fire, it would have been a nightmare for us to extinguish,” he said.

Vouchers available for Vacation Care

Students visit the nation’s capital A group of Year 9 and 10 students and their teachers from Cobar High School had the opportunity to visit Canberra last week.

As part of the excursion, students re-enacted a debate in Old Parliament House, met with our local Federal Member for Parkes, Mark

Coulton, at Parliament House and also visited the Australian War Memorial, building upon their knowledge of Australians who served in World War 1.

The Australian Government generously contributed funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program to help cover the cost of the excursion for local families.

Further careers funding from the NSW Department of Education’s School to Work Program was also received to help support students’ visit to the Australian National University (ANU).

The students also participated in other fun activities on the excursion including go-kart racing and ice-skating, both of which were popular.—contributed

Parents of school-aged children including those starting Kindergarten in 2023, can claim a $500 voucher for Before and After School Care (BASC), just in time to help with the cost of vacation care over the summer holidays.

The NSW Government’s $155 million BASC Voucher Program helps families with household budget pressures, and more than 263,000 vouchers worth $500 have already been claimed by parents.

Of these, more than 197,000 have been redeemed at a BASC service to help families with the cost of care.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the BASC vouchers are a huge success, supporting NSW families to juggle work and family responsibilities.

“We know the Before and After School Care vouchers help to ease hip pocket pressure and give parents and carers the flexibility they need around work commitments.

“I encourage parents who haven’t already to download and redeem a BASC voucher before the summer holidays are over to help cover the cost of vacation care.”

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said parents should download and redeem the $500 vouchers available to them.

“These vouchers support students in getting quality before and after school care, but also allows parents to have more money back in their household budgets.”

The Before and After School Voucher Program is delivered in partnership with Service NSW. Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government, Victor Dominello said BASC vouchers are now available to download and must be redeemed by the end of January.

Mr Dominello said the BASC vouchers were another win for families, and he encouraged parents and carers who have not yet taken advantage of the program to jump in and claim their voucher.

Cobar Judo Club holds end of year grading event

The Cobar Judo Club held its end of year training/grading and shiai (a match, game, fight or competition) events on the weekend to cap off the year for the sport.

Cobar Judo Sensei Ray Chandler said the sport has recently witnessed a resurge in popularity and there were big numbers in attendance for this year’s grading event.

The weekend commenced on Saturday morning with a training session which was later followed by grading for eligible members wanting to advance in rank.

“With a sudden influx of new students in the latter half of the year, there was much anticipation and nerves on the part of new students being graded for the first time as well as long time students making their way into the more senior ranks,” Sensei Ray reported.

The following grades were earned: Tim McClure, Ryan Jiang, Joseph Theakston and Mark Hibbert were awarded junior 5th Kyu Yellow belts; Caleb Theakston earned junior 4th Kyu Orange belt and Jaina Chandler was awarded a junior 3rd Kyu Green belt.

On Sunday the members of the Cobar dojo participated in the end of year shiai competition.

When the dust had cleared, the following placings were achieved: Mons (Under 10 years)—1st Tim McClure, 2nd Ryan Jiang and 3rd Joshua Ho Wing; Yonens (Under 13 years) —1st Kian Engelbrecht, 2nd Joseph Theakston and 3rd Mark Hibbert; Shonens (Under 16 years)—1st Caleb Theakston, 2nd Ruth McClure and 3rd Jaina Chandler; Sienen (16+

Little A’s shares in community funding The electorate of Barwon has secured $399,296 in funding for a total of 22 projects through the NSW Government’s 2022 Community Building Partnership Program.

One of the recipients is the Cobar Athletics Club Incorporated who will receive $5,990 for their fully monitored publicly accessible defibrillator project.

Member for Barwon, Roy Butler said, the State Government funds will deliver muchneeded improvements to local facilities, with building upgrades, solar panels, covered outdoor areas and a defibrillator, just to name a few.

“This is fantastic news for Barwon,” he said.

“The funding is aimed at the many and varied community organisations from grassroots community and sports groups, to councils and local branches of larger well-known charitable institutions and will result in a great range of cultural, educational, safety and even health benefits for the community.”

Mr Butler said he looks forward to seeing how these projects make a real difference in Western NSW. The Community Building Partnership program has funded more than 18,000 community projects since it commenced in 2009.

Race club committee moves into uncharted territory The Cobar Miners Race Club committee is heading into unchartered territory when they hold their 4th race meeting of the year this Saturday.

Club president Jarrod Marsden said it’s been a big year for his small committee organizing and running their annual May and August race meetings, as well as hosting a Pop Up event in September and another this Saturday.

Speaking at the club’s annual general meeting on Sunday, Mr Marsden said they have things well in hand for Saturday’s event.

“The grounds are looking awesome at the moment, thanks to all the rain we’ve had.

“The vet, ambulance, farrier, race caller, barrier attendants etc are all sorted.

“We have also locked in our sponsors, and four of them are new sponsors.

“Our only concern might be getting enough jockeys,” he said.

Mr Marsden said with six groups booked in to celebrate their Christmas parties at the races, he’s expecting there should be a good crowd through the gates.

“We’ll be crowning a Pop Up Prince and Pop Up Princess for the best dressed race goers dressed in Christmas colours.”

Mr Marsden was returned as president at Sunday’s annual general meeting.

Vince Sikora was also returned as vice president and Tony Polack as race day secretary.

There was just one change to the committee with Natalie Prisk taking on the job of treasurer.

Previously the role had been a dual secretary/ treasurer position, filled by Kym Miller.

Mr Miller was elected to the position of secretary.

Four other members, Glenis Prisk, Helen

Polack, Kylie Marsden and Holly Marsden were re-elected to the general committee.

Mr Marsden said he hoped more people in the community might consider joining the committee.

“I’ve had a lot of people say they don’t know much about horses or they don’t want to be on the committee because they want to enjoy race day and not have to work.

“There’s lots of different ways people can help out, including helping in the lead up to race day,” he said.

There’s marketing, cleaning or just helping with grounds maintenance such as mowing the lawns.

“While there is a bit of work to do on race day, a lot of our work done prior to it,” Mr Marsden said.

The Cobar Miners Race Club remains relatively unchanged following their annual general meeting at the Dalton Park Horse Sports Complex on Sunday.

New president for netball club

The Cobar Netball Association has a new president with Mary Urquhart elected to the role at the club’s annual general meeting on Sunday.

Outgoing president Bethany Thomas has stepped into the vice president’s role, Gemma Bain was elected as secretary and Georgie Chaplain as treasurer.

The roles of Junior Coordinator and Canteen/Merchandise Coordinator still remain vacant.

The new committee is looking forward to the 2023 season.

All Class outclass Watch & Learn to win Fast5 title

All Class has dominated the Fast5 netball competition this season. They finished the regular competition as minor premiers and last Tuesday night they claimed a win in the grand final, beating Watch & Learn 37-28.

Applications are now open for the Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler advises the NSW Government is allocating $2 million over four years, 2022-26 to assist sporting clubs across NSW in the purchase and maintenance of AEDs. Applicants can request grants for multiple AEDs in a single application to a maximum of three devices, but the maximum grant for each AED cannot exceed $3,000.

Each organisation is limited to one application per financial year.

All Class outclassed Watch & Learn in last Tuesday night’s Fast5 netball grand final finishing with a comfortable 37-28 victory.

It was a slow start for both sides as they worked off their grand final nerves.

All Class had a narrow 5-2 lead at the first break and they were still ahead, 12-5 at half time.

Both teams were evenly matched up and down the court, with lots of turnovers recorded throughout the match, but it was All Class’s shooting tactics that made the biggest contribution to their win.

While All Class sank 18 shots in the match and Watch & Learn netted 16 goals, the difference was All Class’s shooters, Nicola Harbison and Nathan Prince, weren’t afraid to take risks in the circle.

Between them they scored 13 double pointers (long range shots) in the match.

Three of those shots were netted in the third quarter, which was when they elected to use their Power Play option, which converted them to four point goals on the scoresheet.

The bulk of Watch & Learn’s goals were however single-pointers, as they were forced to shoot close in under the ring.

For the first three quarters of the game, the All Class defenders did a great job of successfully shutting down Watch & Learn’s star shooter, Stevie Toomey.

That was up until the final quarter, when Watch & Learn used their Power Play option and Toomey outplayed her defenders to score 14 of their 16 points in that quarter.

The late surge was however too little, too late and All Class finished with a nine point win, 37-28.

Presentations followed the game with All Class collecting Cobar Netball Association (CNA) stubby holders and $200 worth of Cobar Quids as the competition winners.

As runners-up, Watch & Learn were also presented with CNA stubby holders and $100 Cobar Quids.

The competition’s Favourite Fivers (as voted each week by their opposition) were announced.

From the 26 nominees this year, All Class’s Nicola Harbison and Fast Fobs’ Jayden Paul were the winners with three votes each.

Cobar Yabbies successfully defend the Setts Cup title The Yabbies once again brought home the Setts Cup from the Cobar/Nyngan intertown Setts Cup Carnival event on Sunday in Nyngan.

The Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club won the inaugural carnival in December 2015 and have retained the cup each year since.

The annual carnival is held to honour the late Ian ‘Setts’ Settree who was a former Cobar Yabbies club president and also a member of the Nyngan Splashers club.

The Yabbies dominated three of the four events contested at the Nyngan pool on Sunday with Cobar Yabbies founding member, Bob Clark, qualifying for the finals in all three of the individual events.

From the finals, Clark won the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim after finishing within 0.25 seconds of his nominated time.

Scott Toomey was second (0.28) and Murray Harland was third (0.31).

Cobar once again filled all the podium spots in the 100m swim with club president, John Carswell first on 0.19, Chris Powell was second (0.28) and Clark was third (0.94).

The Yabbies finished first and second in the 50m event with Jason Toomey first on 0.38

and Paul Swainston was second on 0.56.

Nyngan only managed to win the relay event and record a third place in the 50 metres handicapped event.

The Cobar club finished the day with 17 points to Nyngan’s tally of seven points and the Yabbies returned home with the Setts Cup.

A baker’s dozen Yabbies for their club event

There was a baker’s dozen swimmers at the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club event last Tuesday night.

The winners’ spoils were shared around with nine of the 13 swimmers making podium appearances from the four events contested.

Chris Powell set the bar high early in the night when he swam spot on his nominated Cobar Yabbies and Nyngan Splashers swimmers following the annual Setts Cup Carnival time to win the 30 metres handicapped free- at Nyngan on Sunday. The Cobar club has retained the cup since 2015. ▪ Contributed style event.

Lucas Hardy was just behind with 0.10 off his time and Bill Fugar finished in third place on 0.19.

John Carswell took line honours in the 50m swim with 0.09 seconds off his nominated time.

Hardy was once again second (0.25) and Matt Harland swam into third place with 0.35 seconds off his nominated time.

Dave Mexted was the best of the baker’s bunch winning the 100m swim after finishing within 1.28 seconds of his nominated time.

Matt Harland was the runner-up on 1.35 with Murray Harland further back in third place on 1.62.

Powell teamed up with Jason Toomey to win the Brace Novelty event, an Ester Williams swim.

The pair finished 1.27 seconds outside their nominated time and were well ahead of the rest of the field.

Next best were Fugar and Paul Swainston (3.00) with Carswell and Matt Harland finishing third on 3.25.

Golfers were once again restricted Golfers were once again restricted to the front nine holes of the Cobar course for play on the weekend after the storm last Thursday evening created further damage to the course.

A group of 10 golfers contested the Stroke competition on Saturday.

Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence finished as the winner relegating Bill Fugar to second place and Max Phillips to third place after a countback.

All three finished on 72 net.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by John Collins on the 7th hole and Max Phillips claimed the prize on the 8th.

Eight players turned up to play in Sunday’s

Stroke competition.

The ever consistent Max Phillips finished as the winner on 73 net.

Peter Lawrence (75 net) was second after defeating Greg Clark on a countback.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were collected by Lawrence on the 3rd hole and Peter Robinson won the prize on the 8th.

The Men’s Golf summer competition continues this weekend with 9am tee-offs on both Saturday and Sunday.

The events to be played will depend on what holes will be in play.

A decision will be made on Friday afternoon after an inspection of the course.—Three Aces

Easy eight wicket win for Golf Club

All Class’ Nicola Harbison (at left) was named as one of two Favourite Fiver players from this season’s competition.

Nicola, and Fast Fobs’ Jayden Paul, topped the votes this season winning from 26 nominees for the title. Fast5 competition coordinator Haylee Prince presented Nicola with her prize at last Tuesday night’s grand final.

Golf Club easily defeated Nymagee by eight wickets in the 40 overs Senior Cricket competition game played at Ward Oval on Saturday.

Nymagee were sent into bat first and they were bowled out for only 86 runs in the 25th over.

Adam Hill top scored for Nymagee with 21 runs.

Lakshmi Maddipati was the best of the Golf Club bowlers taking four wickets.

In reply, Golf Club had reached the required total by the 21st over with the loss of only two wickets.

Openers Scott Toomey (18) and Alec Fraser (17) laid the platform for Golf Club before Jason Hampel (28 not out) and Mark Fraser (14 not out) came to the crease and combined

well to easily pass Nymagee’s total.

Jacob Hill and Adam Hill claimed a wicket each for Nymagee.

The Golf Club side will be looking to take their winning form into this week’s match when they come up against Empire on Saturday at Ward Oval.

In the Twenty20 competition, Hombres will take on Tilpa/Bushies on Friday night.

The Cobar Cowboys representative game against Bourke is still yet to take place and is hoped the match can go ahead this Sunday.

Bargwanna bounces back to claim bowls crown Barry Bargwanna has been crowned the 2022 Cobar Bowling & Golf Club Bowls Singles Champion with a solid win over past champion, Gerard Livingston on Sunday at the club. In glorious bowling conditions, the pair put on a great show of quality draw bowling during the marathon 46 end decider.

Early on it was all Bargwanna as he quietly pulled away to a commanding 21-5 lead but a great fightback by Livingston saw that lead diminish to just six shots with the score 21-15.

From here the score remained fairly settled with both bowlers scoring regularly, however the early lead proved too much with Bargwanna eventually running away the winner at 31-23. Both players contested a great game that was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd.

Sunday’s social bowls attracted 20 players this week with five games of pairs being played.

Rink 6 had the closest game of the day with the pairing of Mick Watts and Helen Boddy too strong for Bian Smith and Rob Renkin.

They won with a +2 margin.

The other four games were not so close with the margins large enough to be the winning score on most Sundays.

On rink 5 Doug Hudson and Stewart Simpson were winners by +15 over John Daly and David Thomas as were Peter ‘China’ Brien and Glenn Ratcliffe in their match with John Goonrey and Janet Renkin on rink 3. On rink 4 Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Kelly Beard were all over their opposition, Scott Mayne and Daryl Jermyn winning by a margin of +16 to claim second prize.

(Rumour has it that this was Kelly Beard’s first ever win and she now has the thirst of victory, so watch out future opponents!)

However the bragging rights for the day went to Shane Carter and Allan Gardoll who finished the day with an impressive +17 win over David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Jason Howell. (Of note was the big improvement that Gardoll has shown since taking up bowls recently – he is now even drawing shots on his backhand that he usually refuses to play!)

The main man of the day was without doubt the one and only Glenn ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe with his determined effort of three wrong bias deliveries to ensure he took out the ‘George the Giraffe’ honours.—Very biased David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Karen Daly teamed up to win the Golfie’s Twilight Bowls event on Friday night. Knight and Daly finished with a mighty +21 win over their opposition Tony Polack and Kelly Beard.
