When asked what they’d like to do when they grow up, Mason replied he wants to be a farmer and ride motorbikes, Mia plans to become a teacher, Eloise is keen to be a firewoman and Jim has aspirations of being a Police helicopter pilot.

The new faces at CPS

Cobar Public School (CPS) has welcomed five new teachers to the school this year.

Russell Brosi comes to Cobar from Singleton, Sammy McMahon is from Sydney, Jayne Sharkey has moved from Cowra, Mel Ainsworth is from the Central Coast and Joshua Klus has also made the move to Cobar from the Central Coast. Contributed

The remnants of ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily dumped good rain accompanied by strong winds in Cobar on Monday.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, we received 41mm of rain in town and wind gusts of up to 59km per hour.

It started to lightly rain mid-afternoon (although the Bureau didn’t record anything in their gauge until 4.30pm) and then got heavier around 6.30pm until around 11pm.

Much higher rainfall was reported in other areas of the shire with 90mm recorded at Bald Hills north of Cobar, the Burchers had 81mm in their gauge at Four Corners near Nymagee, George Greer reported Louth received 70mm, Jenny Manns had 69mm at Wallangarra north of Cobar and Simone Rogers Porter recorded 51mm in their rain gauge near Cobar Airport.

According to the Bureau, our one day of rain this week is only 1.4mm shy of the February average total of 42.4mm.

Daytime temperatures over the past week have been warm to hot with 36.1 recorded last Thursday; 35 was the top on Friday; Saturday was 38.8; before we had our hottest day of the week on Sunday when the thermometer reached 43.4 degrees. (That’s 9.1 degrees hotter than the average for this time of year of 34.3 degrees.)

The forecast is for some cooler daytime temperatures ahead with 27 the predicted top for today while tomorrow should be slightly cooler and a top of 25 degrees.

There’s a slight chance of a shower on Friday with a top of 29, Saturday should be 31 and 32 is the expected top for Sunday.

Water restrictions have been lifted Water restrictions in Cobar have been lifted as of yesterday.

Cobar Shire Council imposed Level 1 water restrictions on January 12 following the outbreak of Blue-green algae in the Bogan River and Cobar Shire Council’s weir pool at Nyngan.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said the condition of the water in the Bogan River and weir pool had “improved dramatically”.

“The extra bit of rain we had last month and the rain we’ve just received yesterday will ensure our storages are replenished,” Mr Vlatko told The Cobar Weekly yesterday.

“With most residents doing the right thing and adhering to the restrictions, it helped us to cut down on our water usage while we were working to fix the problem.

“There were a few however who ignored the restrictions or didn’t seem to understand that there were restrictions in place,” he said.

“Council appreciates all those who did make an effort to conserve water where they could.

“It really did make a difference.”

Mr Vlatko said he hoped we would continue to get good rain in the coming months.

He said if however we don’t and our water storages get low again, he said council would have no choice but to re-introduce water restrictions.

“I hope if the need arises that all residents will work with us to ensure the preservation of our water resources,” Mr Vlatko said.

New in the line up at CHS

There’s some familiar ‘local’ faces in the line up of new staff at Cobar High School (CHS) this year. Principal Shane Carter is pictured with the new starters: History/ HSIE teacher Maddison Dillon (from Newcastle); Kel Colling (who’s returned to Cobar after six years to teach Literacy/Numeracy/English/HSIE); Helen Polack (who’s currently on long service leave from primary teaching and is trying something different as a Student Learning Support Officer with secondary students); Peta Woods (also a SLSO, who did two years of teaching at uni and has previously worked as a disability support worker); Amie Hill (came to Cobar High in 2008 as a teacher and this year has stepped up into the role of deputy principal); and Tony Lane (from South West Rocks, who has taught for 18 years, and came out of retirement to teach at Bourke last year and this year will be teaching TAS/Technology at Cobar High.)

A relatively small donation will make a big difference A relatively small donation made by the Rotary Club of Cobar to the Lilliane Brady Village (LBV) has the ability to make a big difference to the lives of its residents.

The Cobar club recently purchased and delivered some mobile hairdressing equipment, a wash basin and equipment trolley, valued at $370.

LBV recreational activities officer Wendy Anderson said the new equipment will enable staff to offer their female residents a wash, blow dry and set and just a hair wash for the men.

“For many of our lady residents going to the hairdressers for a wash and set had been part of their normal routine before they came to the village.

“It was something they used to enjoy doing, and it’s something they really missed,” Wendy said.

She said there is a local hairdresser who visits the LBV every six weeks, but that’s only to do haircuts for residents who are not able to leave the facility.

Wendy said staff can now offer an ‘inhouse’ wash, set and blow dry as part of their Pamper Beauty Care services for residents.

“They can have a manicure, have their nails painted and a hand massage.”

And it’s not only the ladies who are benefiting with some of their gentlemen also enjoying a manicure or a haircut and wash.

“It’s a way to relax and unwind.”

When thinking about bringing a Pop Up Shop to Cobar, Maryanne rang a family friend, Natalie Stanford, who had recently moved to town with her husband for work at CSA. She asked Natalie’s advice about how she thought a Pop Up Shop would go.

Natalie encouraged her and later agreed to run the store.

“I’ve always based my business on having good quality clothing, things that you can wash and wear and they still look good.

“I have a few main brands of good everyday wear or casual clothing.

“And whatever is in here in my Narromine store is out there, not all the sizes, but if I haven’t got the size out there I might have it here, or vice versa.

“We’ve just been swapping over stock between here and there with the courier that goes out to Cobar.

“I’m happy to help with events and special orders.

“If someone needs something in particular, Natalie Stanford is the friendly face at the Ollie & I Pop Up shop in Marshall Street. they can just ask.”

Multiple brigades called in to fight Elmore Road fire Eleven rural fire brigade units assisted with a fire that broke out last week along the Elmore Road, near Coolabah, and which spread to two neighbouring properties.

Operational Officer Isaac Amos, from the Rural Fire Service (RFS) at Bourke, reports a number of brigades from the Far West District and North West District, along with heavy plant contractors, worked from approximately 6pm on Monday January 29 until they were stood down on Sunday to help bring the fire under control.

They included volunteers from the Coolabah, Hermidale, Canbelego, Tindarey, Murraawombie, Nyngan, Warren, Lemongrove, Cobar Headquarters, Geandale, and Girilambone brigades.

Operational Officer Amos said they were alerted to the fire by a 000 call.

“The fire started initially on a property on the western side of Elmore Road, it then spread to the north east and jumped Elmore Road spreading into two other properties,” he said.

“RFS crews worked to contain the fire with the assistance of various heavy plant.

“The properties that this fire has burnt on are owned by absentee landowners, which is becoming more and more frequent out here in the west,” he said.

“We often find that due to this fence lines are less likely to be cleared and maintained; meaning there is no cleared lines already in place that the RFS can use to get around or work off of in the event of a bushfire, and also that the property has no fire breaks at all in place to help stop a bushfire.

“Heavy plant in all cases out in the west is a game changer, and essential for controlling and containing these fires to a minimal size,” Operational Officer Amos said.

He said an investigation is currently taking place with RFS Fire Investigators to help determine the cause of the fire.

It’s estimated the fire burnt out approximately 638 hectares of land and there was no loss or damage to any buildings or stock.

“RFS crews are all volunteers; we can’t praise them enough for the hard work and efforts they put in around the clock, while still also working their own jobs,” Operational Officer Amos said.

Neve shares her Joker win

The Joker prize of $24,500 was won on Saturday night at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club by Neve Carter, pictured above with staff member Reina Cross. Neve and her syndicate buddies, Ben Griffiths and Taylah Good, had a plan that if any of them got to have a pick from the Joker board they would select the 5th card from the top. Neve said she however wasn’t sold that could be the Joker and also liked another card on the bottom row. When her number was called Neve said she was nervous but when she got to the board her eyes were drawn to the 5th card which turned out to be the Joker.

Celebrations for The Cobar Weekly’s 38th birthday

Locals wanted their own newspaper that eight months before he resigned after being elected as shire president.

The paper’s had nine editors in total, with the paper’s current editor, Sharon Harland, having the honour of being its longest serving editor, at 18 years. (She’s also its longest serving employee having joined the paper as a casual sports reporter in June 2001.)

In it’s 38 year history, the paper has had numerous employees, many of whom have gone above and beyond in their roles.

It’s also had a number of different printers, including the Snelson family’s Cobar Print n Paper business who printed the paper from the end of 1986 until August 2004.

The paper has gone from being a true “cut and paste” copy printed on a gestetner (ask someone over 50 what they were) when it first started to now being a digitally-produced full colour edition that is printed in-house.

Our news is also now delivered via our website and Facebook pages and by digital subscriptions.

In 1989, 1,750 free copies were distributed throughout the shire and by 2006, we were printing 2,000 copies per week. We currently sell approximately 800 copies each week.

The Weekly was free up until 2005. It was then sold for 50 cents a copy which helped to offset costs when The Cobar Weekly bought its own printer/copier. It rose to $1 in 2007 as production prices continued to rise.

When The Masonic Hall was first built it was operated as a theatre and a cinema. The Empire Cinema was owned by the James family who also owned the Occidental Café.

Meetings of the Cobar Soldiers Red Cross Association, which first formed in 1915, were held at the hall. In 1916 it also hosted farewells for enlisted men before they departed for overseas to serve in World War 1.

A newspaper report in 1932 reports the hall was “full to overflowing” for a concert to raise funds for the unemployed.

For many years it was a meeting place for Freemasons until they moved to the Band Hall

Police arrest and charge a local 16 year old boy Cobar Police have arrested and charged a local 16 year old boy in relation to a number of offences he allegedly committed in November last year.

Following an investigation by police into a number of property offences and stolen motor vehicles that occurred in Cobar in November 2023, the 16 year old was arrested last Tuesday and charged with Break, enter and steal and three counts of Being carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Cobar Children’s Court next month.

Grant to rebuild our regional communities

Round 20 of the Rebuilding Regional Communities Program is now open, but not for long!

This program is a stream of the Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) Program initiated by the former Coalition Government, in partnership with the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR).

It aims to give small remote, rural and regional communities access to funds for community-led initiatives to support their recovery of the continuing impacts of COVID-19.

The Australian Government committed $5 million to the program from 2022 to 2024, which will be distributed by FRRR. The objective of the program is to enhance the process of recovery of remote, rural and regional communities from the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also aims to reduce social isolation and foster stronger, more resilient remote, rural and regional communities.

The program is also directed at helping to sustain local remote, rural and regional organisations and their work.

He said while the cost to purchase (and engrave) the pavers will need to be deducted, they are very close to reaching their original goal of $30,000.

The committee’s fundraising goal was set back in 2021 and did not originally allow for ground work.

John said they have revised what the final cost will be and will either look to gain inkind sponsorship to meet the shortfall or continue fundraising.

He said they had a few more fundraising ideas up their sleeve and John expects they will be able to sell some more pavers to help offset the costs of the build.

Cobar golfer and part time bowler wins at Hillston A group of 17 Cobar lawn bowlers from the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club travelled to Hillston for their Summer Pairs competition on Saturday.

From the group, Mark Fraser, Gerard Livingston and John Daly all made the semi finals playing with their team mates from Hillston.

Fraser (who is more well known for his golfing prowess) and his Hillston Skip, Noel Graham, ended the event as outright winners.

The Cobar players didn’t get much of a chance to practice before the event with the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club greens currently being out of action for maintenance.

The club advises the rejuvenation work on the greens should be completed soon and competitions and social bowls are expected to recommence later this month. —The Second

New touch season gets underway The new season of the Cobar Junior, Senior and Open Touch competitions get underway at Ward Oval tomorrow.

A total of 42 players have signed up to play in the Seniors grade, 13-16 years which will allow for a four team competition.

In the Juniors grade, 9-12 years, the club has however only received 32 nominations from players and, while it is enough to also make up four teams, the committee would however like to see a few more juniors signing up.

The Opens competition will have eight teams again this season with a new team in the Cobar’s Mark Fraser and his Hillston bowls partner Noel Graham being presented with mix, Guns and Hoses. their winning prize by Hillston bowls club president Guy Felton (at centre). Contributed

Army Cadet Units across New South Wales have vacancies for Army Cadet Staff (ACS) We are looking for former Defence members, former Cadets, Mums & Dads and interested community members to help deliver the Australian Army Cadet program.

Australian Army Cadet (AAC) Officers (adult staff volunteers) are the backbone of our youth development organisation. The AAC is always on the lookout for people who are keen to work with teenagers to assist in developing their potential skills, leadership and management roles. Previous Military experience and knowledge is an advantage but we also seek community members who wish to volunteer, mentor and participate within the program.

ACS support the management and safe delivery of their Army Cadet Unit, working closely with other ACS, parents, volunteers and the local community to organise and manage approved Army Cadet training programs and activities.

ACS are appointed after undergoing a selection process, including National Police, and Working With Children checks, which assess their suitability to work with young people.

The AAC provides the opportunity for you to share your life skills and knowledge to mentor/role model youth leadership, safety and management - plus you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of Army Cadet activities.

Three rising stars emerge from water

Soccer makes its return

The junior indoor soccer competition at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre returned on Friday with two 15 minute games being contested. The first game between Green and Red finished at 6-1 in Green’s favour. Two goals (worth four points) were netted by Isla McKervey to help Green to the win. Joseph Theakston and Ashton Campbell also scored a goal each. Following a swap around of a few players and some new Yellow and Blue bibs, a second, more competitive match was played.

Yellow narrowly won that game (1-0) after Mark McBride found the back of the net to score the only goal of the match.

After one member hogged most of the limelight in the pool the previous week, three rising stars emerged from the water at the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club weekly competition last Tuesday night.

Chris Powell grabbed line honours in the opening event, the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim.

Powell finished within 0.07 seconds of his nominated time to claim first place ahead of Jason Toomey (0.17 seconds) and Murray Harland (0.19).

Dave Mexted finished out in front in the 50m event with a very good time of 0.06 seconds off his nominated time.

Shane Josephson took second place with 0.13 off his time and Powell finished third on 0.22.

The best time of the night was recorded by Bob Clark in the 100m event.

Clark touched the wall within 0.04 seconds of his nominated time with Josephson second on 0.12 and Fr Paul Finucane was just behind in third place on 0.19.

Powell and Josephson teamed up to win the Brace Relay novelty event when they finished their walk across the pool within one second of their nominated time.

John Carswell and John Claus were second on 1.38 and Murray Harland and Henry Knight finished third with a combined time of 1.69 seconds off their nominated time.

A squad of Yabbies will head to Dubbo this weekend to compete in the Western Districts AIF Championships Carnival.

Cobar Camels 2024 season is up and running

The 2024 season officially kicks in for the Cobar Rugby Union Camels with their first official training run to be held at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval tonight.

The withdrawal of the Camels from the Western Plains Zone competition midway through 2023 was a massive disappointment for the Cobar rugby community including the players, coaches, sponsors, ‘Old Boys’ and supporters.

However, the recent appointment of Head Coach Mark Aumua and his two highly credentialled assistants, Nick Prass and Deon Gordon, to constitute a Coaching Panel represents the first solid step in the process of rebuilding and restoring the Camels’ competitive edge.

When it comes down to sheer ability, leadership and toughness, the Cobar Camels could have no better mentor than Aumua.

Prass and Gordon bring an aggregation of knowledge and insight into the game of rugby, and steely determination to help instill a winning culture once again within the Camels.

Their skillset will ensure that seasoned rugby veterans can hone and improve their performances while first time players can expect to be coached in the basics of the game of rugby.

Aumua plans a light training run tonight after which he, Prass and Gordon will hold a ‘Meet and Greet’ session.

“It is early days, but I am looking forward to the challenge of coaching the Camels and I’m always on the lookout for any players interested in joining me in the challenge,” Aumua said.

“I have been encouraged by the number of “new” rugby players who have emerged to commit to a season with the Camels and I have also been reassured by several of the 2023 squad that they will be back in 2024.”

One such “new” recruit is Fijian Mike Aitcheson, a fullback or winger, who last week joined Aumua for a few weight sessions.

Tonight, a barbecue and liquid refreshments at the clubhouse will supplement the initial training “ordeal”.

Aumua said in addition to players, he’d also like to see a few of the ‘Old Boys’ turn up to lend their support.—contributed

The Swimming NSW Speedo Sprints Heats, an annual event held simultaneously across various venues in NSW, was held on Saturday with Cobar Swimming Club members Clair Cousins and Isabelle Gillette competing at Narromine. This event comprises of 50m events only and encourages non-members to also join in the fun. Clair finished with a 1st, 2x 3rds and a 4th place while Isabelle had a 2nd, a 3rd and 2x 4ths. These results see both girls off to Sydney next month to compete in the finals alongside the top four swimmers from the other NSW regions events.

A field of eight shooters competed in the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s Air Pistol Match on Sunday with a number of shooters new to the sport breaking their handicaps.

Shot under the guidance of Geoff Clayton, who officiated as range officer, there were some impressive first-time scores.

Tom Smith shot 440 off pistol and, coupled with his assigned handicap of 350, he finished with a total of 790 (and a new handicap of 144).

Alexandra Cain scored 406-350-756 and earned a new handicap of 175 while John Cain finished the day with a score 387-350737 and also a new handicap of 192.

David Tomek shot 345-350-695 and earned himself a new handicap of 230 and Joe Simes scored 402-264-666 and also lowered his handicap to 178.

Among the regular shooters, Robert Neate scored 485 off pistol and, with his handicap of 48, finished with a total score of 533.

Michael Garbutt recorded 479-67-546 and Todd Manns’ score for the day was 390-83473.

This week’s event is a Standard Pistol Match with new shooters aged from 12 and up, welcome to join the members at the range.
