Warrant offender Police are seeking information from the public to locate 18 year old Cruz Cook, who is wanted for outstanding warrants.

Cook is described as Caucasian appearance, 170-175cm tall, thin build with brown hair.

Police have been unsuccessful in locating him and are now seeking assistance from the community.

Cook is known to frequent Cobar as well as the Nyngan and Narromine areas.

O come all ye faithful

The annual Combined Churches of Cobar Carols in the Park event never fails to draw a crowd and this year’s event on Sunday night was no different. There were lots of local families and visitors at Drummond Park singing along with the choir (pictured above). In addition to carols, there was also entertainment from St John’s and Cobar Public School students, a solo performance by Eva Halliger, songs from the Toomey Tunes ukulele groups, a performance by the Copper City Dance Centre dancers, the Rotary Club of Cobar cooked a barbecue and Santa also paid a visit.

We’re looking at four days of 40+ Summer only technically arrived five days ago, but we’re really going to feel the full force of it this week with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a sweltering top of 44 degrees for tomorrow.

It’s part of a four day run of 40+ temperatures expected by the Bureau with the mercury predicted to reach 42 today, then 44 tomorrow, 43 on Friday and 42 is the expected maximum for Saturday.

We’ll get a slight reprieve on Sunday with 37 the expected maximum (and a slight chance of a shower) while next Monday will be cooler again with 34 degrees the predicted top and a medium chance of showers.

According to the Bureau, it reached a maximum of 39.7 degrees yesterday (as per their figures before we went to print) after a top of 34.5 degrees on Monday.

The week had started off mild with Wednesday’s daytime temperature only reaching a top of 26.6.

The Bureau also recorded a total of 18.2mm rain in their gauge up until 9am on Wednesday after much needed rain of varying amounts was recorded right across the shire.

Thursday was slightly warmer with 27.9 degrees the recorded top temperature.

Scattered showers on Thursday put another 0.2mm in the town’s gauge.

The mercury dropped slightly to 27 degrees on Friday before hiking back up on the weekend with 31.9 degrees the recorded top temperatures on both Saturday and Sunday.

CHS students part of Schools Spectacular’s opening act A group of Cobar High School students have featured in the opening act of this year’s Schools Spectacular performance.

The 10 students have recently returned from a week-long journey to Sydney where they joined the 2023 Schools Spectacular Taiko Ensemble.

Cobar High School music teacher, Laura Andrew accompanied the students.

“Under the guidance of professional taiko tutors Graham Hilgendorf and Masae Ikegawa from YuNiOn, the students displayed remarkable focus and determination during each rehearsal, honing their skills in this traditional Japanese art form.

“Beyond rigorous practice, the experience provided a unique opportunity for the Cobar High School contingent to connect and collaborate with students from various schools across Sydney,” Ms Andrew said.

The participating students said they enjoyed performing on the big stage and the opportunity to make lots of new friends.

“The event fosters camaraderie and cultural exchange among students, making it a memorable and enriching experience for all involved,” Ms Andrew said.

NAIDOC cooking, dancing, sport and art activities on offer Cobar High School (CHS) held its NAIDOC Celebrations at the school last Monday with students and staff taking part in a variety of fun activities.

Students were able to participate in eight different activities on rotation.

Among this year’s activities was cooking Jam Drop biscuits using quongdong jam.

Students looked at how traditional Indigenous ingredients can be used in today’s cooking while also learning about their traditional uses.

Staff and students could also take part in a ‘Bush Tucker Talk and Walk’ session which looked at different vegetation around the school grounds and discussed their traditional uses.

The talk also covered other bush tucker items not found on the grounds.

Students were given information about Aboriginal Art and Aboriginal Rock Art. In the Aboriginal 8-ways Pedagogies Mosaics activity, staff and students created artwork using mosaics that represent the symbols used for the 8-ways of learning that is used throughout education.

When completed, these mosaic creations will become a permanent display at the school.

Eden Coughlan, dance principal of Copper City Dance Centre, was on hand to run a full Cobar High School students Corey Piggot, Ash walker and Xav Walker with teacher day of dance activity for the students.

CHS Aboriginal Education Officer Colby Krysti Neale made Jam Drop biscuits with quongdong jam as part of last week’s NAIDOC Lawrence said the dance activity was very celebrations at the school. ▪ Photo contributed well received and one of the more popular activities on the day.

“We also had a couple of sporting activities that represented a traditional game and that had been adapted for today.

“Students learned the traditional reasons behind the sport, materials they would have used and what skills they would have developed by practicing this activity,” Colby said.

As part of the day, students learned the difference between a ‘Welcome to Country’ and an ‘Acknowledgement to Country’ presentation; who is able to perform them; and when they should be performed.

They also discussed ideas on how to improve the current Acknowledgement to Country for Cobar High School.

While NAIDOC Week celebrations are traditionally held in July each year, this year’s events at the school had to be postponed.

The postponement however meant that a full day could be allocated for the celebrations which meant all students had enough time to participate in all eight of the activities.

“I think that’s maybe what gave me the idea to open a vintage clothing business.

“It was something that I thought of doing quite a few years ago when I realized people wanted vintage things and I started collecting them.

“And I thought now is the time to do this and I’ll tell you what, I’ve never been so busy!

“But this is what I wanted,” she said.

“It’s something to do and something that I’m interested in.

“And I’m enjoying it.

“I’ve only been open a couple of weeks but I have had a bit of interest and a few people in to have a look and received some good feedback from people so far.”

In addition to collecting men’s and ladies’ vintage clothing from the 1950s (many of which are Australian made), Patricia’s also been collecting furniture, household items, books, newspapers, stamps and toys, some of which date back to the 1940s.

“I’m not really looking to buy more items, I have plenty of stuff of my own to sell.

“There’s even more stuff in storage but I can’t put out any more than I’ve already got,” she said.

Zac to participate in China program Cobar Pony Club’s Zachary ‘Zac’ Boland heads off to China tomorrow as part of a 13 day Exchange Program.

This year Pony Club Australia received a large number of applications Australia wide for the program with only four members being selected to represent Australia.

Zac was the only NSW Pony Club Member chosen.

He will travel to China with three other riders from interstate, alongside two Pony Club Australia Coaches to competitions around Shanghai and nearby cities.

Zac has represented Cobar Pony Club and Zone 17 in both State and National levels over the past five years and is now thrilled to represent Pony Club Australia at international level.

As part of the exchange program, the group will visit a number of Pony Clubs in China, and undertake lessons and share their experience with the other Pony Club Members.

While in China, Zac will be competing on two occasions at riding centres against other teams from China, New Zealand, and South Africa.

For theses events, each rider will be drawn an unknown horse to compete with and they will only have the opportunity to meet and become familiar with their mount one day prior to competition.

Zac said it will be challenging, but he’s very excited to be given the opportunity to undertake this experience.

Scorers were kept busy at Junior Touch

With a total of 18 tries scored in their Junior Touch 13-16 years Round 8 match last week, Pink Panthers and the Blue Bugs sure kept the scorers busy.

Pink Panthers finished up as 16-10 winners with Harry Cousins (4) and Chloe Griffiths contributed six points with her three tries as female tries are worth double points.

Jack Rogers (2), Oisin McMullen (2) and Harpa Martin added the extras.

In reply, Bridgette Negfeldt and Rhylee Jeffery each crossed twice and Clay McDonald and George McDonald were responsible for a try each for Blue Bugs.

The other 13-16 years game between Brussel Sprouts and Mighty Minions was also a high scoring affair with a total of 16 tries scored in that game.

Brussel Sprouts won 14-6 with their tries scored by Maddie Bruce and Ethan McLeod (three tries each), Lachlan Brookman (2) and one each to Holly Watt and Oscar Ryan.

For the Mighty Minions, Jaxon Burke and Ashton Dietrich each crossed twice and Billy George and Parker Cryer also scored a try each.

The juniors 9-12 years games were also ‘try-fests’ with Keeping it Lemon winning 12-8 over Redbacks and Keeping it Orange dominated their match with Blue Powerades winning 15-6.

Keeping it Lemon shared the try scoring around with Harpa Martin (2), Hugo Josephson (2), Addison Cull, Holly Watt, Mason King and Thomas Preisig their try scorers.

Tommy George racked up five tries for Redbacks with team mates Audrey Josephson and Charlie Nicholson also scoring a try each for Redbacks.

Keeping it Orange’s Bria-June Brookman owned the second half of their match with Blue Powerades with Bria-June running in four tries in their 15-6 win over Blue Powerades.

George McDonald (3) and Rhylee Jeffery (2) were Keeping it Orange’s other point scorers.

Blue Powerades’ points came from London Hyland (2) and Harlym Curtin (2).

The competition’s semi finals commence tomorrow.

Yabbies victorious in winning the Setts Cup Carnival trophy The Cobar Yabbies hosted the Nyngan when they won the relay with a spot on time battle of the day, the Yabbies had won the Splashers for the annual Setts Cup Carni- while the Cobar team were well behind with bragging rights, finishing with 14 points to 10 val with the Yabbies once again victorious 12.22 seconds off their nominated time. to take the Setts Cup from Nyngan’s reach in winning the trophy.

Named in honour of former Cobar club president and also a former Nyngan club member, Ian Settree, it’s the 8th time the Yabbies have claimed the prize since the inception of the inter-town carnival to honor Setts’ memory in 2015.

Ben Plush led the charge for the Cobar Yabbies this year picking up a quick six points for his wins of both the 30 metres and 50 metres handicapped freestyle events.

Plush recorded identical times in both when he finished within 0.09 seconds of his nominated times for each event.

The Yabbies also claimed second and third place points in the 30 metres event with Wayne Rice (on 0.28 seconds) and Chris Powell (0.34) helping the Yabbies to a 6-0 lead after the first event.

In the 50m swim, Jason Toomey (0.32) grabbed second place and Nyngan claimed their first points of the meeting when Nigel Tyack finished third with 0.36 seconds off his nominated time.

The Splashers started making a comeback and they picked up more valuable points when Lyn Faulks won the 100m swim with a time of 0.53 seconds off her nominated time.

The field of both Cobar Yabbies and Nyngan Splashers was smaller than previous years Cobar swimmers filled second and third places, with Jarred Davey on 0.69 and Scott for the annual Setts Cup Carnival on Sunday morning at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool. King Roosters book themselves a grand final berth King Roosters (A Grade) and Rusty Snails (B Grade) have booked themselves grand final appearances after they won their Open Mixed Touch qualifying semi final games last Thursday.

King Roosters outlasted Concrete Cowboys in their tit-for-tat A Grade semi with King Roosters running away late in the game to finish with a 9-6 win.

Toby Greenwood and Zane Taylor scored a try each in the first half with Bridgette Negfeldt, Marty Turton, Phoebe Pursehouse and Sophie Clark touching down for a try each in the second half.

In reply, Neve Carter (2) and Hannah Carrol scored Concrete Cowboys’ tries.

Concrete Cowboys will get another shot at a grand final spot when they come up against the Red Hot Chilli Steppers in tomorrow night’s final.

The 4th placed Chilli Steppers won their A Grade elimination semi final against third placed Phat Athletes 12-7.

Despite a second half comeback with Phat Athletes outpointing Chilli Steppers 5-4, the 2-8 deficit between the two teams at half time was “a bridge too far” for the Phat Athletes and their loss sees the veterans now bow out of the competition.

Brennah Aumua and Tom Plater (with two tries each) led the scoring for the Chilli Steppers with Cassidy Chapman, Joseph O’Connor, Kai Taylor, Loma Atuau and Veni Taumalolo also on their scorer’s list.

Jaxon Burke ran in four tries for The Blossoms with Sosie Barton and Tadgh Waugh scoring three times each and Oisin McMullen touched down for two tries.

Jayden Cryer (2) and Jack Fazulla were responsible for Urban Strength’s three tries.

Tomorrow night’s final matches should both be good, close games.

The last time the Concrete Cowboys and the Chilli Steppers met was in Round 1 and the game finished in a 7-all draw.

It’s the same timeline for The Blossoms and the CATS since they came up against each other and in that game CATS only just got the better of Blossoms 9-7.

Marsden gave notice at the meeting that it will likely be his final term as club president.

The recently elected Cobar Mayor said he’s happy to continue in the race club president’s role for another year, however with council, work and personal commitments, Marsden gave plenty of notice that he won’t be seeking re-election next year.

“I will be stepping down, but not away, I won’t be leaving the club in the lurch,” he said.

Also returned to the club committee were: vice president Vince Sikora, secretary/ treasurer Natalie Prisk, race day secretary Tony Polack and publicity officers Kylie Marsden and Helen Polack.

The position of Fashions on the Field Coordinator was not filled at the meeting.

Secretary/treasurer Nat Prisk advised the meeting that after a very successful year in which the club almost doubled its profit, the club is now “financially liquid” which is a turn around from previous years.

Following recent changes in the racing industry, the club now has a large amount of upgrade work to do on (and off) the track before their next race meeting in June 2024.

The Cobar Miners Race Club committee remains unchanged following the group’s annual general meeting on Sunday morning at Dalton Park.
