Melbourne Cup Fashions on the Field at Cobar Preschool yesterday featured the style and glamour of three and four year old little ladies, Charlotte Cronin, Maggie Lancaster, Remmi Mackay, Tippi Evans and Lucy Mainey. Handbags were an important accessory for most, with ribbons, bows and a fascinator popular headwear this year. Various hues of pink were the choice of most entrants while Lucy was a stand out in lemon. Man and woman charged with drug offences

Coming together over food

Mental health charity, Tradies in Sight’s Bruno and Joanna Efoti (with Cobar residents Beth Kerville and Charlee Davis-Banks) at the Real Reconnections Tour at Drummond Park on Friday night. The tour, funded by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), is about helping communities gather (over a meal) and build strength to face tough situations like drought.

Police arrested a South Australian man and woman following a search of their vehicle on the Barrier Highway on Wednesday.

About 2pm on Wednesday police received information regarding an altercation between a male and female in Barton Street Cobar.

A short time later police located the pair on the Barrier Highway.

Police searched their motor vehicle and located a number of prohibited drugs.

The 27 year old male and 40 year old female were arrested and conveyed to Cobar Police Station.

Following a police investigation, the male was charged with Possess Prohibited Drug, Drive Whilst Disqualified and a number of traffic offences.

He was refused bail to appear at Bourke Local Court the following day.

While in custody, the female suffered a medical episode and was conveyed by ambulance to Cobar Hospital.

She was later flown to Sydney’s RPA Hospital for treatment.

The female was issued with a Court Attendance Notice to appear at Cobar Local Court in January for the offence of Supply Prohibited Drug.

Production at Mt Boppy delayed

Manuka Resources has delayed production at their Mt Boppy Gold Mine, 45km east of Cobar, to Quarter 2 2025 due to refinancing.

The company recently secured an extension in the repayment of its debt facility from its Hong Kong-based lender.

Manuka’s Executive Chairman, Dennis Karp, said the company’s current focus is on installing a processing and gold doré production facility at Mt Boppy.

“To date plant feed for processing has been trucked to our Wonawinta plant, which is a little over 150km away.

“Haulage savings (currently it costs $30/t to truck from Mt Boppy to Wonawinta) and general cost benefits arising from on-site processing, makes the economic justification for this decision clear cut,” Mr Karp said.

“Our recently released Maiden Silver Ore Reserve for our 100 per cent owned Wonawinta silver project essentially provides additional precious metals optionality to the Company.

“Furthermore, it opens up the potential of adding a second revenue stream during 2025, further increasing our exposure to precious metals.”

Mr Karp said Manuka plans to restart the Mt Boppy gold project first and, once it reaches steady production, the company will then focus on restarting the Wonawinta silver project, depending on updated financial models and silver prices.

Looking at careers in mining

A new crop of 12 Cobar High School students have recently commenced their Pathyways2Mining course with the CSA Mine. The six week program (one day per week) provides students with insights to various aspects of working on a mine site, including a safety induction, basic first aid, working at heights, confined spaces training and interview skills. “At one time there was probably up to two million Merino sheep in the Cobar area.

“There’s not a lot of merino sheep left in the Cobar Shire.

“I don’t know what it is now, I tried to get that figure but wasn’t able to,” John said.

The Land Between The Rivers—The Cobar Never Never is John’s fourth major work.

His first book, Mad Dogs & Miners (about 125 years of cricket in Cobar) was released in 2003, and then Hard Times—The Unforgettable Pop Burgess was published in 2013 followed by The Crowing of The Roosters (the history of rugby league in Cobar) which was released in 2017.

“I suppose this one has to have been the hardest to write, it’s a lot bigger.

“But I’ve enjoyed them all, all for different reasons. I just love doing it.

“As I got close to the end of my research I realised I would miss travelling out onto the stations, walking into new sheds and recording my experiences,” John said.

And are there any more books in the wings for John?

“No I told my wife this was the last one but I don’t think she believes me.

“I’ve actually got two half written that I’ve been playing around with so I won’t say no.”

John will be holding a local book launch, where he will be signing and selling copies of the book (see advertisement on Page 10) and plans are also in place for an author reading event at the Cobar Library.

Council misses out on grant funding Cobar Shire Council has missed out on 2025 Australia Day grant funding.

Council’s tourism manager Demi Smith told last week’s Tourism Advisory Committee meeting that council had been unsuccessful in its application for funding to help stage the annual Australia Day event in Cobar.

Demi said they had previously relied on the grant funding and council will have to pick up the full tab for the cost of the event this year.

“Council always supports the Australia Day event, both financially and in-kind with staff and equipment, but this year we will have to foot the bill for the lot,” Demi said.

She said much of the grant funding council received for the event was spread throughout the community groups involved in the day.

“It was a way to support the community groups that support us—Rotary, the Yabbies, CATS, the swimming club, youth council, Dust Bowl Fuel Burners, The Cobar Weekly and the cadets—they all benefited from the event.”

Demi said the event will still go ahead on Australia Day 2025.

“The nomination forms are out now and we encourage locals to start thinking about who they will be nominating for an award.

“We often hear people say: “So and so, should have got that award”, and maybe they may have deserved to win it, but if they’re not nominated, then they can’t be judged.

“If you think someone is worthy of an award, please nominate them!” Demi said.

Locals were invited to have a coffee with firefighters Locals were invited to have coffee with a firefighter at Gumnuts Café on Saturday morning as part of Fire and Rescue NSW’s recruitment drive.

Cobar Station 256 captain Alex Lennon said they were looking for people who want to contribute to the safety of the community, learn new skills and be part of a highly capable team.

“We are looking for anyone with a keen interest in being part of a team that responds to someone’s worst day, and try to make that day better,” Captain Lennon.

“We need people that have good availability to respond to incidents day or night.

“Any stay-at-home mums who have kids starting school or preschool and looking for something to do with their new kid-free time would be ideal.”

Captain Lennon said all recruits receive “world class” training.

“It consists of 30 hours of online plus local station-based training followed by eight days at one of the training centres.

“They can choose to do that training in two blocks of four days or eight days straight.

“The additional training and experience they gain will also be an advantage in their primary employment making them stand out from the crowd,” Captain Lennon said.

Once the initial training is complete, the brigade trains twice a month at night for two hours.

“We attend on average 80 calls per year and more than half of them are outside of business hours,” Captain Lennon said.

Medical episode A local woman has died after suffering a medical episode at a local mine site on Saturday.

Cobar Police Sergeant Warwick Laing said police received information at about 11.30am on Saturday that a 63 year old female had suffered a medical episode at the CSA Mine site.

“Police and NSW Ambulance attended the mine,” Sergeant Laing said.

“The female was conveyed by ambulance to Cobar Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The matter has been referred to the Coroner.”

Marsden elected chair of FNWJO

Hardcore wrestling action

Cobar’s mayor Jarrod Marsden has been elected unopposed as the chairman of the Far North West Joint Organisation (FNWJO) at the group’s meeting in Bourke on Monday.

Cr Marsden takes over the role for former Bourke Mayor Barry Hollman.

Cr Marsden said he is looking forward to working with the Bourke and Walgett mayors and general managers and hopes the application by Coonamble Shire Council to join the FNWJO will soon be finalised.

He said he would also like to make another approach to Brewarrina Shire Council to again consider their potential membership.

Cr Marsden expressed his appreciation of Minister for Western NSW Tara Moriarty for making funding available to the FNWJO for an additional 12 months and was optimistic longer term funding would be forthcoming.

Bulla Park’s focus is on antimony Following recent diamond drilling results at its Bulla Park project west of Cobar, West Cobar Metals is also modelling geology and mineralization with the view to a maiden Copper-Antimony Resource estimate.

Recent drilling results are being assessed in conjunction with geophysical data interpretation to identify the next areas to be targeted for drilling.

Antimony demand is strong amid rising demand and global supply concerns.

(Antimony is a designated critical mineral used for defence/manufacture of ammunition, solar cells, fire retardants and as a strengthening agent in alloy production.)

China supplies 56 per cent of the global antimony production and has decided to restrict exports, claiming its strategic reserves are too low to allow further exports.

This has caused the price of antimony to increase significantly.

A large and vocal crowd of enthusiastic locals filled the Cobar Memorial Services Club on Friday for an action packed night of wrestling. All-Star Wrestling’s Northern Defiance Tour didn’t disappoint with fans treated to plenty of high-flying moves and takedowns. The atmosphere was intense as a tag-team match spilled out of the ring and on to the street with the audience leaving their seats to follow along with the action. The evening culminated with the main event of the night, the All-Star Wrestling Heavyweight Championship Match, in which Keegan Brettle defeated Aries to make it his 13th successful title defence in a row.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting it’s going to hit a top of 41 degrees in Cobar today.

That’s well above the average of 31.7 for this time of year but 4.4 degrees shy of the Bureau’s record high of 45.4 degrees set on November 20, 2009.

Tomorrow, the temperature will drop back to a warm 32, with a good chance of rain and possible thunderstorms.

On Friday we may see morning showers and a high of 30.

Saturday is predicted to be mostly sunny, reaching 31 and Sunday will be partly cloudy, with a high of 32 and a slight chance of rain.

Monday’s forecast is partly cloudy, with a high of 31 and, again, there’s a slight chance of more showers.

Cougars Under 14s are into the WWRL semi finals

Sophie Cain and Rori Urquhart lined up with their Castlereagh Cougars Under 16’s last game of the Western Women’s Rugby League 2024 season on Saturday at Coonamble.

The Cougars were narrowly beaten 24-14 and missed out on a spot in the semi finals.

A win for the Cougars Under 14s on Saturday at Coonamble has ensured them a semi final of the Western Women’s Rugby League (WWRL) competition.

The Cougars snatched the victory with a tight 24-20 result over Lachlan with Cobar’s Ella Oborn scoring a try to help her Cougar’s team to the win and a semi final berth.

The 14s match was one of three Round 7 Western Women’s Rugby League games played between the Cougars and Lachlan on Saturday.

The Cougars Under 12s narrowly lost their game 22-14 with Cobar’s Isabelle Gillette scoring two of the Cougars’ three tries and Cobar team mate Bria-June Brookman landed one conversion.

The Under 16s Cougars were also just beaten 24-14 in their match up with Lachlan.

It was the last game of the season for the Under 16s and Under 12 sides, as both missed out on semi final berths.

Lachlan forfeited their Opens match to the Cougars on Saturday and the Under 18s had a bye as Lachlan doesn’t have an 18s side.

The season is also now over for the Under 18s and Opens sides as they finished out of semis contention.

The Cougars Under 14s, who finished in 4th place on the competition ladder, will play the Goannas in their must win semi this Sunday for a spot in next Saturday’s grand final.

There was a field of 18 bowlers on the Golfie greens on Sunday for social bowls despite the 39 degrees temperature.

David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Karen Daly’s +20 win against Doug Hudson and Bel Starr was the highlight of their week! They had a tight grip on that mat for 14 out of 18 ends.

The runners-up, also with a big margin of +15, were Craig Grimmond and his team mate Allan Gardoll who could do no wrong when they played David Schofield and Degen Brown.

There was yet another big win for Russell Brosi and David Thomas over Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Greg Clark, also by a big margin of +12. In this match the scorecard showed Team Brosi’s +5 win on the 7th end and +4 on the 12th end, pretty much summed up just how well the duo played together.

The Twilight bowlers were treated to the best greens conditions ever on Friday night.

Greenkeeper Stewart Simpson had the greens running so fast there were heaps of beached fence sitters (a Cobar term for bowls that end up in the sandy ditch and get to sit out the rest of the end on the fence)!

Allan Knight, Greg Clark and Bridget Miller hogged the mat for 95 per cent of play to finish as +11 winners over John ‘Shark’ Daly, Tony Polack and Will Lawton.

David Schofield, Degen Brown and Allan Gardoll won their game by +5 against Karen Daly, Bel Starr and David Kershaw.

The Concrete Cowboys had their first outing in the 2024/2025 Twenty/20 cricket competition on Friday night at Ward Oval. They came up against the Back Door Bandits who were keen for a win after their match last week was called off two overs early due to “failing light” (the lights went out and were unable to be turned back on so the game could be completed). This week Bandits posted a big first innings total of 174 for the Concreters to chase but they failed to cement a solid innings and the Bandits finished with the win.

A squad of 15 Cobar Little A’s members competed in 54 events at the Western Plains Little Athletics NSW Zone Championships in Orange over the weekend.

Malcolm Gillette finished in first place in his four events—Discus, Shot Put, 100m sprint and Long Jump.

Alexander Cowan came in 1st in his Shot Put event, 3rd in both Discus and Triple Jump, 4th in Hurdles and 6th in 400m and Javelin.

Josh Gillette claimed 1st place in his Triple Jump event, placed 5th in 100m, 6th in 200m and 7th in his Long Jump event.

The future-defining Cobar Camels Rugby Union Club’s annual general meeting will be held at the Camels Clubhouse at the Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval on Sunday.

The current executive is seeking the attendance of all available founding and current members, past and current players and interested supporters when all executive and committee positions will be declared vacant.

The Club has already given notice to Western Plains Zone that the Camels will not be participating in the 2025 competition.

However, the Camels remain affiliated with the Zone and are enabled to compete in both Zone and Cobar sponsored special events for both men and women in 2025.

The Camels have the full support of the Zone as they work to rebuild for competition in 2026.

The Cobar Rugby Union Club owns a well turfed oval and associated amenities which are available for the use and benefit of the town as well as the Club itself.

The Club is unfortunately the victim of its hard work over time with rates, water and maintenance costs a perennial financial burden before attention can be focused on actual football.

Here the Club does acknowledge its loyal and generous sponsors.

The Oval itself was completed in 1970 and the Clubhouse opened in 1977.

The complex represents real local historical significance while the historical success of Cobar teams since 1958, especially in the early days, mandates that all effort and total commitment be entrenched at the Club to enable the Camels to restructure and prosper in the future.

Western Grumblebums take the darts A Grade crown The grand finals of the Cobar Darts Association competition were played last Wednesday night with the Western Grumblebums taking the A Grade crown while Empire Barflies took the B Grade title.

Western Grumblebums finished as minor premiers in A Grade and went on to take the premier’s title after they accounted for RSL Minors 5-3 in last week’s grand final at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club Another tight match was played out in the B Grade division, with Empire Barflies just getting the better of RSL to eventually claim the win, 5-4.

Back Door Bandits post big score to claim a big win In an exciting Twenty/20 cricket clash, the Back Door Bandits took on the newcomers to the Friday night competition, Concrete Cowboys, delivering an entertaining contest last week.

The Bandits emerged victorious, showcasing strong batting and impressive bowling.

The Bandits batted first, posting an ominous total of 174.

The innings saw contributions from several players, but the standout performance came from Jayden Potts, who remained unbeaten with a stellar 83 runs off just 50 balls, including 13 boundaries.

Reynold Mugugia added 10 runs, while Tim Hillam contributed a quick 12 runs before being run out by Zac Broughton.

Bandits’ captain Tristan Everett played a vital role at the end, scoring 40 runs not out off 23 balls.

The Cowboys’ bowling attack struggled to contain the Bandits.

Only small fields as official golf season comes to an end The official golf season is slowly coming to an end and that, combined with some of Cobar’s “elite” golfers competing in the prestigious Gutfull Cup in Nelson Bay meant there were only small fields during the week in the men’s competition.

Wednesday was the usual little band of merry men who played a Stableford.
