Cobar Shire Council is one of 20 councils and groups across the Barwon electorate that will share in almost $500,000 worth of funding from the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnerships (CBP).

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler announced the grant recipients on Monday.

“There are a lot of community-based organisations that go above and beyond serving their local area on shoestring budgets, with volunteers operating out of places with poor facilities, few creature comforts and with outdated equipment,” Mr Butler said.

“Which is why it is great to see some of those organisations benefiting from government programs like Community Building Partnerships (CBP) which offer grants for infrastructure projects that deliver ‘positive social, environmental, and recreational outcomes, while also promoting community participation, inclusion and cohesion’.”

Cobar Shire Council will receive $25,423 to replace the starter blocks at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool complex.

Other recipients included: Broken Hill PCYC, $11,495 for air conditioning for their boxing room; Walgett PCYC, $15,000 for an audiovisual hub; Enngonia Rural Fire Service, $12,100 for an equipment storage shed; Life Education NSW, $23,978 for upgrades to the Healthy Harold Mobile Learning Centre, and Back O’ Bourke Picnic Race Club, $29,045 for a portable grandstand.

Anna met with Cobar Brennan Centre committee president Barry Knight and vice president Stephen Dutton on Friday to discuss the construction of more self-contained units and a new hall for residents’ use.

The new units are to be built on a Councilowned vacant block of land in the CBD (on the corner of Broomfield and Linsley streets), which Cobar Shire Councillors voted to sell to the Brennan Centre committee for $1 in March this year.

Barry said the aim was to build four (or possibly six new units) and also replace the outdated hall which is used as a meeting place for residents and their families.

Anna was given a tour of the Brennan Centre hall and a couple of the residents’ units, including one that was built in 1993 and another constructed in 2005.

She said an important part of the planning process was having discussions with residents.

Warm days ahead

After a few cold days over the past week, Cobar is set to enjoy some warmer weather in the coming days.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, a top of 17 is predicted for today while tomorrow should reach 18 degrees.

Saturday is expected to be partly cloudy, also with a maximum of 18 degrees and a chance of a shower.

Sunday should reach 19 and Monday is expected to be a warm and sunny 20 degrees.

Friday is the exception to the rule, with a top temperature of only 14 degrees expected.

Last week’s coldest day was Wednesday, with the thermometer only reaching 10.5 degrees while the warmest day was Monday, when we had a high of 21.6.

Iona added to the government’s National Park network Iona, 100km north west of Cobar, is one of three large parcels of land in the north west of NSW, to be added to the State Government’s network of national parks.

A study of the rock art of the Cobar Pediplain was completed by FD McCarthy in 1976 where he states, they are the “finest series of rock paintings in southeastern Australia”.

Following the acquisitions, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will undergo extensive planning to determine how best to protect the environmental and cultural heritage values of these new reserves.

Work including feral animal control and fire management will be carried out.

These three acquisitions nearly double new additions for the 2024-25 financial year to a total of more than 73,000ha.

The NSW national parks network now totals almost 7,774,000 ha.

Reggies can retire

The Cobar Roosters Reserve Graders can hang up their boots for the season with their loss on Saturday at home to the Narromine Jets now putting the Cobar team out of finals competition. After leading 20-0 at half time, the visitors went home with a 24-6 win. Cobar’s points came just before full time when Tom Rogers crossed to score for the Roosters and Dallas Josephson landed the conversion. The Jets finished at the top of the table with Baradine, Binnaway, Coonamble and Coonabarabran also qualifying for finals. The Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) held their annual general meeting last week with Greg McKervey returned as president.

Also returned to their executive positions were: Isaac Theakston as vice president, Abby Fairfull as secretary and Trudy Griffiths as treasurer.

Parker Cryer, Caleb Theakston, Tom Summerhayes, Bethany Smith and Myshelle Gillette were elected to the general committee.

A hole-in-one for Brian Russ

Local golfer Brian Russ recorded a holein-one shot at the Bill Bartlett Memorial Trophy Day on Sunday.

There were 17 players for the Four-BallBest-Ball competition with Paul Kershaw and Alec Fraser the winners with a score of 42 points.

Second place went to the big-hitting pairing of Matt Russell and Corin Ah-see with 41 points and Brian Russ and Greg Clark took out third place.

Apart from winning third place, Brian Russ also had cause to celebrate his first-ever hole -in-one, on the 15th.

This was a great achievement for him, but heartbreak for one of the more senior golfers who had a Nearest the Pin prize sensationally snatched away from him in cruel circumstances!

Other Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Greg Clark on the 3rd hole, Garry Wilkin (7th and 8th) and John Collins was nearest the pin on the 15th however controversially, Russ won the ball because his was in the hole!

In the individual event, coming back after a long break, Jason Foster won the day with 37 points. Paul Kershaw and Corin Ah-see had 34 points with Kershaw winning second place on a countback.

The Men’s Club Foursome Championships were held on Saturday with only 10 players competing. (The miserable weather, the races, rugby league home games and the Nyngan Ag Expo all on the same day could have had something to do with the small field.)

Jay Egan and Ron Craw won the Stroke event with a score of 127.

Paul Kershaw and Alec Fraser were second with 128 and Garry Wilkin and Peter Brien were third with 129.

The Nett event win went to Kershaw and Fraser with a score of 108½ with Egan and Craw second with 112.

Third place went to Brian Russ and Greg Clark with 114½.

Egan and Craw won the stroke event with 127 ahead of Kershaw and Fraser on 128.

Only one nearest the pins was won and that was by Alec Fraser on the 8th hole.

This week’s scheduled events are the Polyfabrications Three-man-Ambrose on Saturday and the 6th Round of the Captain’s Trophy competition will be contested on Sunday.

Roosters juniors host final round

The Cobar Roosters hosted Nyngan, Dubbo Macquarie and St John’s Blue teams at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday for the final round of the Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League competition.

The Roosters Under 16s played a good game but were eventually beaten 30-10 by their Nyngan Tigers counterparts.

Kai McCosker and Jackson Muldoon ran in a try each for Cobar with Rowdy Barton landing a conversion.

The Coach’s Award went to Rowdy with Ryan Mugugai named their Players’ Player.

The Cobar Under 12s played Dubbo Macquarie in an contested game with Brock Eves earning their Players’ Player honour.

Their Coach’s award was shared between Judd Josephson, Senio Tuafao and Bria Brookman, who all played for Macquarie as they were short on numbers.

The Roosters Under 11s and Under 10s also played uncontested games against St John’s Blue visitors.

For the Under 11s game, Billy Tiffen collected the Roosters Coach’s Award and Josh McMillan was voted their Players’ Player.

In the Under 10s match, Jake Prendergast received Cobar’s Sportsmanship Award and Aisea Fakahua collected the Coach’s Award.

In the Mini League games played on Sunday morning, Nate Sullivan and Tilly Grentell earned the Under 8s awards for the Blue team while Oliver Trantor and Nixon Shields collected awards for the Red team.

In the Under 6s division, Kaiden Hamilton and Max Nardi earned their team’s awards this week.

Roberts duo book a bowls finals berth

Netball semi finals commence

After finishing as minor premiers, Divas got to sit out for the first week of the Senior Netball semi finals on Friday night.

In their semi final game, Smash Ups beat Copper City Crushers 45-23.

In their elimination semi final match, ATC Angels finished as easy 53-15 winners over Pink Galahs.

Pink Galahs have now been eliminated from the competition.

In this week’s matches, Divas will play Copper City Crushers while Smashups will take on ATC Angels.

The winners of both games will meet next Friday in the grand final.

Craig Youd had the men’s highest peg out of the week, with 116 while Macee Brown’s peg out of 49, was the highest for the ladies.

Two pistol events

The Cobar Amateur Pistol Club hosted two events on Sunday with some competitive scores recorded on the day.

Range Officers Michael Garbutt and Robert Neate oversaw six shooters competing in the 10m Air Pistol event.

Joseph Hill shot an impressive score of 341 off pistol and, with his starting handicap of 350, he finished with a total score of 691.

Hill also earned himself a new handicap of 233.

Chris Driver is also sporting a new handicap after he shot 551 off pistol and, with his handicap of 52, finished with a total score 603.

His new handicap is now 44.

Other scores from the 10m event were: Geoff Passfield 408-159567; Robert Neate 483-66-549; Michael Garbutt 441-67-508 and Tim Turton 554-35-589.

Four shooters took part in a 25m Sports event, supervised by Range Officers Geoff Clayton and Robert Neate.

Strong scores continued with Adam Green shooting 524 off pistol and, with a starting handicap of 85, he finished with a total score of 609, and a new handicap of 68.

Other scores recorded were: Tim Turton 563-35-598, Chris Driver 546-44-590 and John Woloczij 435-123-558.

This week will be a 25m Standard Pistol event.

Club members celebrate a successful swimming season The Cobar Swimming Club celebrated a successful 2024/2025 season with presentations and an annual general meeting at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Sunday.

With a strong turnout of members, families, and supporters, the event highlighted a season of growth, achievement, and community spirit.

This season had 63 registered swimmers, with many showing remarkable improvement in their skills and confidence.

The club’s commitment to development was evident through its initiative to provide free swimming lessons and squad sessions for all members.

The effort was widely praised by families and coaches alike and was made possible due to local sponsorship from the community and the committee’s fundraising efforts.

Club president Stephen Gillette commended the swimmers and coaching staff for their dedication.

“It’s been a fantastic season.

“The progress we’ve seen in the pool is matched only by the enthusiasm and support from our club community,” Gillette said.

The highlight of the presentations was the presentation of the club’s prestigious perpetual trophies.

The Cobar Roosters First Graders dropped out of the finals race after they were unable to sustain a great second half comeback in their match against the Narromine Jets in their Christie & Hood Castlereagh Rugby League match at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday.

The Jets had established a commanding 20 nil lead by half time, but their prospects of securing victory looked somewhat shaky after the home side came roaring back into the game, scoring 14 unanswered points to trail by just six.

It is history now that the Jets were able to go over for a converted try to extend their lead to 12 points and, while the Roosters replied with another try, the first half deficit was too much for them to reel in and they lost the game 26-18, with the loss ending their season.
