Honoured with Life Membership

Barry and Paddy Francisco were honoured with Life Memberships to the Cobar Miners Race Club on Saturday with club president Jarrod Marsden making the presentation to the pair at the club’s winter race meeting. The pair have been involved as volunteers with the club for 25 years. In addition to attending meetings and helping out at working bees, they can be counted on to help clean the facilities and set up in the week leading up to race day. On race day they help out at the front gate and also in the kitchen. The couple were shocked with “all the fuss” with Paddy saying they just like being involved and helping.

Kangaroo aerial survey begins next week

The NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water have begun routine annual kangaroo surveys across the western area.

Fixed-wing aircraft will be flying at 300 feet above ground level over the western region, including across the Cobar Shire, next week.

The NSW Government Environment and Heritage Department monitors kangaroo numbers across NSW so they can establish appropriate quotas for harvesting to maintain ecologically sustainable populations of kangaroos.

Reliable population estimates are fundamental to ensuring the sustainability of the commercial harvest and are used to set the annual harvest quotas.

The NSW Government has been researching and monitoring kangaroos under the NSW Kangaroo Management Program since the 1970s.

Over this period improvements have been made to the design of surveys to estimate kangaroo population size, based on the best available science.

The Kangaroo Management Advisory Panel provides advice on important matters relating to the NSW Commercial Kangaroo Harvest Management Plan and ensures that the methods of harvesting kangaroos for commercial use are humane.

LGNSW comments on housing targets

Local Government NSW (LGNSW) believes the State Government housing target provides much needed certainty for the sector, but is disappointed councils were not more involved in their co-design.

LGNSW President Darriea Turley AM said LGNSW has long been calling for engagement on housing targets so that elected representatives and council staff can get on with the job of planning for the future.

Have your say on connectivity

Rural, regional, and remote Australians have another way to give feedback on telecommunications issues with the release of the first ever Regional Telecommunications Review survey.

As part of the Review, which takes place every three years, the Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee examines the experiences of people in regional, rural, and remote parts of Australia with telecommunications delivery, as well as considering the unique needs of First Nations communities.

Submissions and face-to-face consultations to date have provided feedback on a range of matters including the suitability of telecommunications during emergency situations, how emerging technologies could improve connectivity; and ways telecommunications can support regional development.

The short online survey provides a way for regional, rural and remote Australians to easily provide feedback on how they are experiencing telecommunications in their own communities.

There are two other options for people to have their say: attending a face-to-face consultation in various towns or providing a submission via their website (https:// www.infrastructure.gov.au/have-yoursay/2024-regional-telecommunicationsreview).

Input from the public helps the Committee make findings and recommendations to Government that address the needs of rural, remote and regional Australia.

Previous Review’s have seen a number of major initiatives announced and delivered, such as the Mobile Black Spot Program and the National Audit of Mobile Coverage.

The 2024 Review is being chaired by the Hon Alannah MacTiernan, former Western Australian Minister for Regional Development.

“Access to reliable telecommunication is increasingly important for regional Australians – it is essential for keeping connected with family and friends as well as for business and access to health and education services,” Ms MacTiernan said.

“We need to hear your stories about what is working and what is not.

“While we will be travelling to dozens of sample communities across the country, we want to provide an opportunity for every regional Australian to have their say.

“The online survey is an easy way you can participate.”

The online survey closes at the end of July.

Local truck wins at nationals

Cobar Dustbowl Fuel Burners club member Peter Attwater’s Ford truck recently won the ‘Geelong Award for Concourse’ at the Australian Early Ford V8 Nationals event in Echuca. Judging was based on a points system with each vehicle starting off with 1,000 points and deductions were made for any non original items. Peter had points deducted for adding an oil pressure and temperature gauge, for having the wrong distributor, running on 12 volt instead of 6 volt, using a Z9 oil filter and even having phillips head screws where they should have been flat! Sky Strikers run riot over Rovers The Sky Strikers ran riot over the Orange Rovers in their Minis Round 3 game of the Cobar Junior Soccer competition on Saturday morning at Ward Oval.

Sky Strikers won 6-0 with Zane Ntamuhanga (3), Nestor Linn (2) and Charlotte Cowan scoring Sky Strikers’ goals.

The Mini Purple Wanderers just got the better of their Cornish Dragons opposition winning their game 3-2.

Niklaus Flack-Hogan (2) and Avah FlackHogan kicked goals for Purple Wanderers while Lincoln Griffiths and Odin Ackerley netted one each for the Cornish Dragons.

In the other Minis match, Raging Rhinos and Pitch Pirates finished with a 1-all draw with Raging Rhinos’ Noah Seymour and Pitch Pirates’ Kelsey Coffey booting a goal each for their teams.

The Minis Gumnut Milkshake Awards went to Anna Mackay, Charlotte Cowan, Lincoln Griffiths, Carter West, Callum Gibbs and Kelsey Coffey.

Clayton Matlam, Zane Ntamuhanga, Odin Ackerley, Violet McBride, Libby Brown and Archer Fugar took home the Cobar Hotbake Donut Awards.

In the Mids division, Bengal Tigers beat Polar Bears 6-3 with Mark McBride (3), Jack Geppert (2) and Xavier Foster netting goals for the Bengal Tigers.

Two of Polar Bears’ goals were scored by Hayden Griffiths and Henry Geppert was responsible for their other goal.

Black Knights beat the Sharks 6-3 in their match up on Saturday.

Tom Preisig was the leading goal scorer for Black Knights booting three goals while Eligh Ritter (2) and Callum Bennett netted their other goals.

The Sharks’ goals were scored by Judd Josephson (2) and Cooper Suridge (1).

In the other Mids game, Redbacks finished with a 5-3 win over Maroon Rangers with Redbacks’ goals netted by Edwin Palma (3), Jacob McKervey and Joseph Theakston.

Roosterettes’ game confidence continues to grow Brimming with confidence after their big win last week over Coonabarabran, the Roosterettes took it to the Swanettes in their Round 6 Castlereagh league Tag match on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

The match was a very competitive game from the outset with the young Roosterettes team showing no hesitation as they faced one of the heavy hitters of the competition.

Cobar coach Brianna Watson said it was a very good game considering they had to play a few girls in new positions after a couple of their key players went down during the week with illness.

Dunedoo eventually ran out 14-6 winners.

Bridgette Negfeldt was Cobar’s try scorer with Watson’s successful conversion adding their extra two points.

Negfeldt collected Best & Fairest three points with two points going to Taylah Good and one to Molly Carter.

Negfeldt, Good and Neve Carter shared the Players’ Player honour.

The competition has a general bye this Saturday due to the King’s Birthday long weekend.

The following week the Roosterettes and Under 18s sides will head to Binnaway for Round 7.

Carnival combined with novelty events made for a fun day Cobar High School held their annual Athletics Carnival last Monday with Great Cobar finishing out in front.

Chesney were the runners-up with Fort Bourke third and Occidental was 4th.

Holly Drady was the girls 12 years Age Champion with Addison Cull the runner-up and Sophie Beer was third.

The 13 years boys Age Champion was Riley Bruce with George McDonald the runnerup and Mason King finished in third place.

Rhylee Jeffery was the 13 years girls Age Champion with Ella Oborn the runner-up and equal third place was shared by Norma Mugugia and Holly Watt.

The 14 years boys Age Champion was Josh Francisco with Rowdy Barton the runner-up and Eli Martin coming in third.

The Age Champion for the 14 years girls was Isobel Willard with Sienna Campbell the runner-up and in third place was Lila Armstrong.

In the 15 years boys division, Will Oborn was Age Champion with Evan Wilson runner -up and third place was equally shared by Kai McCosker and Tyler Brown.

Rhylee Patterson was the 15 years girls Age Champion, with Isabella Campbell the runner -up and Tanna Grentell was in third place.

Prisk has always supported Burrells and she has often made the long trip from the southern highlands to ride for the Cobar trainer.
