Tahnee has been a member of the advisory committee since 2021.

David will continue to serve on the committee and offers his support to Tahnee as vice president.

Regan Kings has stepped into the secretary’s role and Briana Coffey was returned to the treasurer’s role.

Therese Hill, Karen Lennon, Stephen Dutton and Lee Davey were re-elected to the general committee along with a new committee member, Brytt Moore.

Council’s HR manager Summer Patterson said the LBV has long had to rely on agency nurses to meet their staff ratio requirements.

The five personal carers, who are all trained AINs (Assistants in Nursing), have been employed by Cobar Shire Council under the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement (ACILA).

“In March 2023, the Labor Government created the ACILA to address workforce shortages in the aged care sector.

“The agreement streamlined the process of recruiting qualified and experience care workers from overseas, who were excluded from other sponsorship programs due to the minimum salary requirements of those other programs,” Ms Patterson said.

While there were “a few catches” that came with the agreement, she said it was however a viable option for Council to pursue.

“A specialist recruitment agency that Council had worked with previously was awarded a funded Government contract to place 100 migrant workers in aged care facilities across the country.”

Ms Patterson said as migration law is complex and ever changing, it was of immense benefit to have the agency’s migration team assist with their labour agreement application. “After two years of permanent employment, the employees will be eligible to apply for a permanent subclass 186 visa, and the potential for ongoing employment with the Lilliane Brady Village at the conclusion of their three years’ service,” Ms Patterson said.

“Without an agreement like this providing access to sponsorship pathways, Council simply wouldn’t be able to meet our staff ratio requirements at LBV and would still be heavily reliant on agency nurses.”

The couple have bought a home in Rockingham and intend to take a break from working for a few months to get settled in.

Their plan is to open a new restaurant, but not straight away.

“We want to get a feel for the area and find a good location.

“We already have a couple of customers in WA (who have visited the restaurant in Cobar) and they are waiting for us to open our restaurant in Perth.

“I’m also going to take some time to get the kids settled into school and just be ‘mum’ for a year,” she said.

“We’re sad to be leaving but plan to visit Cobar again, maybe with a caravan.”

Amm and her mother, Kay AungLinn, came to Cobar 13 years ago to set up Cobar Thai.

Originally from Burma, they came to Australia looking for more opportunities and began working in Sydney.

On a friend’s recommendation, Amm, supported by her mother, took a chance and decided to open a restaurant in Cobar.

Nandar, Nay and sons Noah and Nestor are making the move to Western Australia.

On May 8, 2011 they opened Cobar Thai with a group of local invited guests treated to a Thai feast at the restaurant’s grand opening.

Cobar Thai quickly developed a reputation for excellent food and service.

Nay joined the business (and the family) when he moved to Australia in 2014.

The pair had known each other for some time through their siblings—Amm’s sister is married to Nay’s brother.

Nay and Amm were married in a small service at Cabramatta. (They returned to Burma for a big family wedding celebration in 2016.)

The couple like Australia and have loved living in Cobar.

Both became Australian citizens and their two sons, seven year old Nestor and almost four year old Noah, have grown up in Cobar.

“We’ll always remember Cobar—we had lots of firsts here—first business, got married, bought our first house, had our first born Nestor and it’s the first home Noah has known,” Amm said.

Aged Care Bill to benefit rural areas

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton was pleased to see the Aged Care Bill was recently passed by the Federal Government.

“The Coalition worked hard in negotiating with the Government to ensure these reforms provide dignity and clarity for older Australians,” Mr Coulton said.

“We pushed for further changes to the legislation to ensure small, rural, regional and remote aged care homes were able to be supported through this process.

“We secured an additional $300 million Aged-Care Capital Assistance Programme round, specifically for homes in rural and remote locations. This funding can be used for accommodation for workers, construction, or renovations to the aged care home.

“We know that in the regions, many aged care homes struggle to find staff to meet the Government staffing mandates. That is why we moved an amendment to allow enrolled nurses, and registered nurses via telehealth, to be utilised within these mandates as well.

“However, the Labor Government opposed this important amendment.

“The Government also opposed our amendment to give providers a year to adapt to this significant package of reforms.

“We know small, regional, rural and remote providers in particular need more time to adjust to these changes and the Coalition will keep fighting for a genuine transition timeline,” Mr Coulton said.

“We’ll also continue to fight for sensible changes that seek to ensure aged care providers in regional areas will not be forced to close their doors because of this Government’s inflexible policies.”

Running throughout December and January, Plan B reminds anyone planning on drinking with family and friends over the holiday period that planning how they’ll get home safely should be a key part of their preparations.

“Summer is a fantastic time of year in Australia and a time when we like to catch up with family, friends and work colleagues,” Transport for NSW Acting Regional Director West Holly Davies said.

“But it’s also a time when some people may be tempted to try their luck behind the wheel after a few drinks, and there is no surer way to ruin a good time out.

“The message is clear: if you plan to drink, plan not to drive and have a Plan B. “You might think you’re OK to get behind the wheel but even a few drinks can affect your driving, placing you and others on the road at risk. We want people to make planning their trip home as much a part of planning an afternoon or night out as choosing where you’re going or what you’re wearing.

“That might mean leaving the car at home and catching a cab or bus, choosing a designated driver, calling a mate for a lift or deciding to stay the night, but whatever your Plan B is, know it and stick to it – for your sake and the sake of every other road user.”

Off to a good start

Another Yabby joins Spot on Club Kyle Roberts became part of the Yabbies ‘Spot on Club’ last week when he joined the growing list of swimmers who are recording spot on times.

Roberts was the 6th swimmer this season to chalk up a spot on time at the Cobar Senior Men’s Swimming Club’s weekly events.

He recorded his 0.00 time last week in the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim, which has been the most popular event for the ‘Spot On Club’ with four out of the six swimmers having recorded spot on times in the 30m event.

Murray Harland, with 0.05 seconds off his nominated time, had to settle for second place in last week’s 30m swim with Bill Fugar finishing in third place with 0.22 seconds off his time.

There was a tie for first place in the 50m swim with Tom Jones and Todd Fugar both touching the wall within 0.03 seconds of their nominated times.

Harland grabbed third place with 0.09 seconds off his time.

Jay Egan (0.21) finished out in front of Jones (0.31) and Scott Toomey (0.50) in the 100m event.

Harland and Roberts teamed up to win the Brace Relay novelty event which required swimmers to retrieve coins off the bottom of the pool.

Harland and Roberts completed the task within 3.46 seconds of their nominated time.

Bill Fugar and Bob Clark were 5.12 seconds outside their time to take second place and back in third spot, on 6.85 seconds, were Todd Fugar and Tom Jones.

Three Cobar Swimming Club members made their carnival debuts this season on Sunday with Hannah Trudgett, Henry Knight and Cooper Trudgett competing at Warren’s annual swimming carnival. All three swimmers have been training every morning since the start of the season and it showed. Henry placed first in all seven of his events and also recorded a 0.67 second improvement on his 50m Butterfly personal best (PB) time. Hannah and Cooper also recorded some new PBs. Seven Cobar players collect Cougars’ end of season awards Seven Cobar players featured in the Castlereagh Cougars Women’s Rugby League Club end of season awards.

The 2024 awards presentations took place at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club on Sunday.

Kayla Hasson-Williams was named the Opens’ Best Forward.

In the Under 18s team, three Cobar players collected awards including: Most Improved Molly Broughton, Players Player - Molly Carter and Best & Fairest - Bridgette Negfeldt.

In the Under 14s division, Ella Oborn collected the Coach’s Award and Rhylee Jeffery was named their Best Forward.

From the Under 12s team (which was coached this season by Cobar’s Sarah Johnson), Isabelle Gillette shared their Players’ Player and Best & Fairest awards with two team mates.

Brian Russ has been playing very consistent golf of late and he blitzed the small field with a two-over off the stick score for a final 65.

That must be his best round of the year.

Next, seven shots behind, was a visitor, Colin Kershaw.

He doesn’t however have a handicap so second place went to Chris Powell on 74, nine shots off the pace set by Russ.

Russ also managed to win the only Nearest the Pin prize on the day – on the difficult 11th hole.

This season will be remembered for one of postponed and abandoned games due to an unusually wet winter.

There was no Cobar Open, leaving a number of golfers wondering what might have been.

Hamming it up on the greens

Peter ‘China’ Brien, David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Brian Ferrett were constantly one-upped by John Goonrey, Shane Carter and Darryl Jermyn on the Golfie greens on Sunday morning. Goonrey, Carter and Jermyn finished as the day’s winners and took home the ham prizes. The weekly social bowls event now offers ham prizes in the lead up to Christmas.

Mick Garbutt remains as president and Todd Manns was returned as vice president along with Lidija Garbutt as secretary/treasurer.

Robert Neate kept his captain’s role and Joe Sime will take on the vice-captain’s position.

Manns and John Stingemore will continue to share the publicity officer roles.

Tracey Lawrence has taken on the scorer’s job while Geoff Clayton, Anita Neate and Paul Lawrence were elected to the general committee.

Following Sunday’s meeting, a field of nine competitors shot in two events.

A 25m Black powder event created lots of smoke and sparks.

Some good grouping by Geoff Clayton resulted in a good score of 100.

Other scores from the Black powder event were: Michael Garbutt 62, John Wolocijz 58, Wayne Bunting 34 and John Stingemore scored 30.

The 10m Air pistol event was shot under the supervision of Range Officer Anita Neate.

Geoff Passfield earned himself a new handicap on the day after he finished with a score of 634.

Passfield shot 374 off pistol and, with his handicap of 260, finished with a total of 634.

He now has a new handicap of 203.

Other scores from the 10m event were: Adam Green 446-119-565; Robert Neate 485-66551 and Todd Manns 437-83-520.

This week’s event will be a 25m Standard shoot.

Pink Kinis win back-to-back matches

Catch up games were played in the Sen- 13-16 years competition played last week as back matches in their double-header round. iors Touch competition on Thursday night a double-header.

Pink Kinis won their Round 6 game 7-3 with Round 6 and Round 7 matches in the Pink Kinis and Blue Bulls both won back-to- against Green Machine and then backed up to just beat Cheese Balls in a close 4-3 encounter.

Pink Kinis’ try-scorers in game one were Ella Oborn, Riley Bruce, Skyla Fairfull and Sosie Barton while Sosie, Ethan McLeod and Talas Burke were their point scorers for their Round 7 match.

Blue Bulls accounted for Cheese Balls 8-2 in their first game and then beat Green Machine by the same 8-2 margin in their Round 7 game.

Rhylee Patterson scored three tries for Blue Bulls in their first match and Parker Cryer crossed for two.

Parker also landed two tries in their second game with Green Machine.

Team mates, Holly Watt and Jaxon Burke, also contributed two tries each to Blue Bulls’ winning tally.

A high scoring 14-all draw was played out between Red Cherries and Orangutans in the 9-12 years Round 7 game last week.

Corey Cleary led the try scoring for Red Cherries with five touchdowns with Alfie Toomey (4), Tom Preisig (2), Billy Dunn and Josephine Baker-Mooney their other try scorers.

Billy Watt and Kasalia Fakahua touched down for three tries each for Orangutans with Josh Gillette (2), Hallie Deppeler and Hugo Josephson also crossing for Orangutans.

In the other 9-12 years game Blue Takis finished as 12-5 winners over the Yellow Bananas.

Mark McBride (2), Taj Goonrey (2), Tommy George (2), Ashlee Compton, Indie Burke and Rhylee Nicholson scored Blue Takis’ points.

In reply, Keelan Atuau (3), Thomas Knight and Zac Brown scored tries for the Bananas.

Pink Kinis, Riley Bruce, Evan Wilson, Sosie Barton, Addison Cull, Tillie Cain, Ella Oborn, Skyla Fairfull, Ethan McLeod, Maddison Jeffery and Jackson Muldoon, recorded back-to-back wins over Green Machine and Cheese Balls in their Seniors 13-16 years Touch competition double-header round on Thursday.
