Cobar recorded its hottest August day on record ever on Friday when the thermometer reached a high of 32.6 degrees.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology’s records dating back to 1962, Friday was our warmest August day on record.

The previous highest daytime temperature in August was 31.3 which was recorded on August 26 in 1995.

The thermometer rose and dipped like a rollercoaster all last week with the temperature reaching a warm 28.3 degrees on Wednesday before dropping to 23.2 on Thursday.

It then skyrocketed up to 32.6 on Friday before dropping back to a top of 24.3 on Saturday.

It climbed again on Sunday to 25.2 before it dropped back down on Monday, and only reached a top of 20.7 degrees, which was our coolest day of the week.

After a couple of cool days (and nights), the Bureau is predicting the remainer of the week will be warm and sunny.

After an overnight minimum of four degrees, we can expect it to reach a maximum of 25 today and a top of 28 tomorrow.

A high of 29 degrees is forecast for both Friday and Saturday before a shower or two on Sunday which will cool things down a bit with a top of 25 expected.

The nights should stay in double figures with 12 expected overnight tomorrow, 14 on Friday and Saturday and 13 on Sunday.

The Bureau is predicting it will be a much cooler start to the working week with just 20 the expected maximum for Monday.

“It wasn’t the Minister’s first time in Barwon,” Mr Butler said.

“He has been out west before, slowly making his way around to all of the 27 hospitals and MPSs in the electorate.”

Minister Park said it had been a privilege to visit the western area health services with Mr Butler to talk all things regional and rural healthcare with staff and locals.

“I’ve always said that if you want to address big health challenges, you need to meet with the communities who are experiencing them on the ground, and Roy Butler is such a fervent advocate for the area,” Minister Park said.

Peak Mines team comes to the rescue in Bendigo The Peak Mines rescue team recently took part the 2024 Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) Victorian Mine Rescue competition in Bendigo, Victoria.

From August 23-25 eight mine emergency response teams from Victorian, NSW and Tasmanian mines took part in the annual safety training exercise which involved simulated rescue scenarios.

Peak Mines Rescue Coordinator/Senior Emergency Services Officer Mark Aumua, has previously participated in three rescue competitions, and acted as manager/reserve to Peak’s 2024 team.

“It was the team’s first time in this competition,” Mark said.

“They did themselves proud representing themselves, Cobar and Aurelia Metals and just missed out on the Agnico Eagle Fosterville Gold Mine Team spirit award.”

The award acknowledges the team who best displays great qualities of enthusiasm, positivity, teamwork and commitment.

At the presentations, Simon Delander, head adjudicator and ex Cobar resident/WHS Manager at Peak Gold Mines, acknowledged the Cobar team’s efforts.

“The scenarios were very realistic including an upturned vehicle containing casualties that collided with a long-haul truck.”

The Peak Mines Rescue will be able to use the new skills and experience they gained at the competition and put them into use, if necessary, on the mine-site and in the community.

The team caught up with some other exCobar residents who were attending the competition including Tony Walkinshaw as the Team Manager/Reserve for Evolution Lake Cowal Mine Rescue team and Dean McHardie, from Fire Safety Australia (FSA), who acted as an adjudicator for the Underground Search and Rescue events.

The Cornwall coal mine from Tasmania was the best overall performing team at the event.

Cobar High was among 69 schools participating in this year’s Merino Wether Competition at the Rabobank National Ram Show and Sale.

All schools across the state are invited to put in an expression of interest to take part in the challenge and this was the second successive year Cobar High School has taken part.

Each year, the Dubbo National Ram Sale Association purchases a line of Merino wethers which are then distributed to participating schools to care for and prepare for processing for a period of six months.

The sheep are assessed and scored based on commercial values of their wool and meat.

Cobar High’s Ag teacher Kym Sutton said students learnt a lot from entering the competition last year and applied it to this year’s competition where they saw improved results.

“They had a great time at this year’s event.

“They were able to gain a lot of hands-on experience in wool classing and assessing different fleeces,” Ms Sutton said.

“They participated in a Young Farmers Challenge and spoke to a lot of different industry professionals – wool brokers, fashion designers, shipping and sales, on farm managers, stud owners, working dog trainers, Fletchers sheep buyers/quality control staff within the meat processing industry and logistics managers for Cobar High School Stage 5 Agriculture students Sarah Nicholson, Sophie Cain and Indy both domestic and export markets.

Pistol club members welcomed Roy to the range Cobar Amateur Pistol Club members represented Cobar at the Dubbo Pistol Club Western Plains Championships over the weekend.

Six disciplines were shot on Saturday and Sunday with each of the four Cobar competitors earning a top three placing in their respective grades.

In the Centrefire Sports Match, Tim Turton and Chris Driver both recorded second placings.

Lidija Garbutt was first place in the 25m Pistol event.

In the 10m Air Pistol event, Turton claimed a first place with a grade break (when a shooter achieves the minimum score required for that grade); Michael Garbutt and Lidija Garbutt both placed first in their grades and Chris Driver came in second in his grade.

In the 50m Pistol event, Turton was first (with another grade break) and Michael Garbutt was third.

In the 25m Standard Pistol event, Turton finished in first place and Michael Garbutt was second while Michael Garbutt was first and Turton placed third in the 25m Rapid Fire event.

Kriz and Smith combine to win Langford Day Canadian event Cobar golf’s annual Langford Day mixed Canadian event was played on Sunday in perfect weather.

The winning team of Narelle Kriz and Bian Smith didn’t let a very loud tyre blow out on the 16th hole affect their game and, after swapping carts, they finished with a winning score of 69 1/8 net.

Geraldine Francisco and Jay Egan finished as the runners-up (after climbing out of the open cut after the Bulldogs’ loss to Manly) with 70 2/8 net.

In third spot were Jannine and Garry Wilkin on 72 7/8 net while Karen Manns and Mark ‘George’ Fraser scored 73 net to claim 4th place.

Kriz picked up both the Nearest the Pin prizes for the ladies on the 8th and 15th holes.

None of the men players were able to get on the 3rd or 11th greens to claim their nearest the pin prizes.

The previously postponed P & R Lawrence sponsored Ambrose Ladies Golf event went ahead on Saturday morning with Narelle Kriz and Wen Zhang winning the day after posting 55 1/2 net.

In second place were Sally Bannister and Barb Barklimore on 60 net followed by Marlene Wynd and Sue Phillips (62 1/2 net) and team mates Glenda Peebles and Daphne Cross were 4th with 64 net.

The Nearest the Pin competition was run on all par three holes and prizes were awarded to Marlene Wynd, Sally Bannister, Wen Zhang, Daphne Cross and Jannine Wilkin.

Brenda Fugar was last Wednesday’s Stroke winner after finishing the 18 holes with a score of 75 net.

Sally Bannister was the runner-up on 76 net and Barb Barklimore placed third with 77 net.

Best with the short stick were Sally Bannister in A Grade (31 putts), Fran Samios and Brenda Fugar in B Grade (27 putts each) and in C Grade, Glenda Peebles had 28 putts.

A Stableford will be played today and the KENO two lady Ambrose qualifying round will try for a ‘third time lucky’ to be played on Saturday.

Cobar runners in the mix at Dubbo Stampede A group of 20 Cobar runners competed in varying distances at the 2024 Dubbo Stampede Running Festival on August 25.

Edwin Swanepoel and Isaac Theakston competed in the 42.2km Rhino Ramble marathon event with Swanepoel finishing third (2.56.34) and Theakston was 24th overall (and first in his Under 20 Male category) with 3.30.18.

Roosters Under 18s win thriller grand final in extra time From the outset the Cobar Roosters came out firing in their Castlereagh Youth League grand final game on Saturday and, despite a fightback by the Gulgong Bull Terriers, Cobar finished with a thrilling 18-16 win, albeit in extra time.

The Cobar boys were switched on from the get-go and within two minutes Jayden Greenwood had crossed for their first points.

Greenwood’s try came from a spot on grubber kick by Reece Josephson which found its mark in goal and Greenwood regathered to score. Cobar captain Tadgh McMullen, who led his side well all game, coolly converted to give the Roosters an early 6-0 lead.

Shortly after the heavily marked Josephson (who was named Player of the Grand Final and Youth League Player of the Year) made a break and passed off to Jayden Paul who raced over out wide to score.

McMullen’s conversion from the sideline took the Roosters’ lead out to 12-0 after just 10 minutes of play.

The Narromine Jets scored a late try to seal their 14-10 hard fought win over the Coolah Flyers in the Ladies League Tag grand final match.

Narromine’s Emily Edwards was the Player of the Grand Final with team mate Shian Chatfield named the League Tag Player of the Year.

The crowd was close to capacity when the Cobar First Grade side came out of the sheds to take on the Coolah Roos.

Both sides were keen to win but the Roos played a much superior game and took home the trophy with an emphatic 32-8 win.

The Roos’ Josh Charles was named Player of the Grand Final while the Castlereagh First Grade’s Player of the Year award went to Gulgong’s Brad James (for the third time).
