For the second year running Cobar High School has won the Outback Science and Engineering Challenge! The annual event is a nationwide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle in partnership with Rotary clubs, other universities and sponsors. Through the challenge, students experience different aspects of science and engineering which they would not normally see in their school environment. The event also aims to inspire students to consider a future career in the STEM field. There were seven schools from across the western area competing at this year’s event with Cobar High finishing as the overall winners with a score of 1,372 points, 99 points ahead of runners-up Broken Hill High School with Cobar Public School finishing third on 1,018. Pharmacy fears

Local pharmacist Shannon Eves has weighed in with other pharmacists around the country condemning the Federal Government’s proposed 60-day medicine dispensing policy as being unworkable.

“When I heard about the Labor Government’s plan to introduce 60-day dispensing, I can honestly say I was both devastated and angry,” Shannon said in a letter to John Mitchell Pharmacy customers.

“This is because I see the issues our small town already faces with access to appropriate and timely healthcare.

“Adding 60-day dispensing in will only further disadvantage us!” she said.

The Australian Government has proposed the 60-day dispensing of medicines to help ease the cost of living pressures and making hundreds of common medicines cheaper, by allowing millions of Australians to buy two months’ worth of medicine for the price of a single prescription.

According to the Department of Health and Aged Care, once fully implemented, the 60day prescribing policy will provide doctors with the option to prescribe a two-month supply of more than 320 medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) to Australians with stable, ongoing conditions.

“I went to IGA this morning and I saw they had a whole range of things that I buy myself so I was pretty pleasantly surprised.”

She said it was obvious that many local parents and carers were trying to make a healthy change for their kids.

“I think we disconnect with how food makes us feel so there’s a total disconnect around that peace.

“We all have the right to be healthy, so we seem to forget that too.

“We’re looking for a quick fix which isn’t always the way that our body wants to heal, and so having simple steps that we can transition through is empowering.

McKay said they had been approached by a number of members of the community who wanted some ideas on how to implement good, healthy eating habits for their children.

Tammy said Sally-Anne had been recommended to her.

“Hopefully this will be the starting point for the families to gain a lot more information about what to put in their kids’ lunchboxes, what’s healthy, because some do struggle and we see some inappropriate things in kids’ lunchboxes,” Tammy said.

“This is a kind of ‘plant the seed’ step in the process.”

Tammy said everyone who attended the first session said they loved it.

“We’ve also got a Triple P program coming up too, which deals with different behavioural aspects for families,” Tammy said.

Youth Homelessness Matters Day aims to highlight the resilience of young people affected by homelessness.

According to the Australian Government’s Department of Social Services, over 28,000 young Australians aged 12 to 24 years were estimated to be homeless on Census night 2021. Young people are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of homelessness, not only to their education and transition to employment, but also to the formation of stable and healthy relationships.

Cobar’s local support services combined last week to raise awareness of youth homelessness and let people know what services are available locally to help.

They offered a range of activities at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre including a soup kitchen, movie, craft activities and a drum beat therapy session.

CatholicCare’s Housing Support Worker Gina Lyons said the event was well received.

“It was a great success even when faced with a storm and having to move the event from Drummond Park to the Cobar Youth & Community Centre at short notice.

“There was a fantastic turn out,” Gina said.

“All the guests had a fantastic time doing screen printing, making worry dolls, canvas art and playing in the jumping castles.

TRADES ASSISTANT - MOBILE MAINTENANCE CSA Mine, Cobar, NSW Job Ref: CSA1217 CSA Mine is looking for Trades Assistants to join the Mobile Maintenance team. This role will see you responsible for the daily refuelling and servicing of Mobile Maintenance equipment throughout the mine including undertaking daily inspections of the equipment. When required you will assist in general servicing of equipment within the workshop and will assist with stores duties including loading and unloading trucks and cages.

About the role: • Refuelling Mobile Maintenance equipment • Conduct daily inspections on equipment • Provide prompt feedback to Supervisors and Sandvik site PSA’s when issues/defects are found • Accurately record fuel and oil volumes as well as hour meter readings on all equipment • Service Mobile Plant equipment when required • Assist the Store when required – loading/ unloading parts • Monitor, maintain and check equipment and materials • Achievement of daily production targets • General housekeeping and operational process activities

The successful applicant will have: • Current Australian Manual Driver’s Licence and Forklift ticket • Mining experience and a mechanical trade certificate will be highly regarded • UG mechanical maintenance experience in mobile fleet, including but not limited to; Sandvik, Epiroc and Caterpillar equipment • Competent in equipment servicing and refuelling of mobile mining equipment • Previous experience in operating a fuel and lube service truck will be highly regarded • High commitment to a positive safety culture

League Tag and Under 18s sides get a head start

In what equates to a somewhat staggered start to the 2023 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League season, a number of competition games were played in both the Youth League and League Tag competitions over the weekend.

The majority of those were played in Gilgandra on Sunday when six League Tag games were contested.

Cobar, Dunedoo and Narromine did enough in their games at Gilgandra to suggest that they will be in the mix when it comes to semi final time, with all three handing in strong performances, although Coonamble certainly gave the Dunedoo Swannettes a run for their money before going down in what was one of the tighter games witnessed on the day.

The Cobar Roosterettes finished the day with two good wins.

They defeated Gilgandra 32-0 with Sarah Morley scoring three times for the Roosterettes.

Brianna Watson, Sophie Clarke and Georgia Boland also crossed for tries with Watson kicking four goals.

After a slow start in their second game against Binnaway, the Roosterettes then went on to convert their 6-0 halftime lead into a very solid 28-0 win by full time.

Bridgette Negfeldt and Sarah Morley each scored doubles for Cobar with Brennah Aumua also crossing for a try.

Brianna Watson kicked four goals to contribute to Cobar’s win.

In their Youth League game played at Narromine on Saturday, the Cobar Bantam Roosters showed no mercy in their 60-0 drubbing of Gilgandra.

Attention now turns to round one of the competition where there’s some appetizing First Grade games on offer.

The Coonamble Bears will be out to impress their home crowd when they entertain the 2022 premiers, the Cobar Roosters at Bear Park.

After spending 2022 in limbo, the Coonabarabran Unicorns find themselves back on the paddock and at home to the Baradine Magpies in a local derby that should attract a huge crowd between these two archrivals.

If past epic contests between the two near neighbours is anything to go by, this will be no place for the faint hearted and a fierce battle is anticipated.

A little further south another local derby will be taking place when the Binnaway Bombshells will play host to the Dunedoo Swans in a match that will be a real test for both outfits.

This being especially so for the home side who are making a comeback to First Grade after several seasons out of the competition.

That fact alone should ensure that “The Crater” is extremely well populated with spectators who will be eager to get some sort of gauge on their respective teams prospects for the 2023 season.

In other games the Gulgong Bull Terriers will be keen to start their centenary year with a bold showing against the Narromine Jets whilst the visitors will be out to build on what was a very productive first year in the Castlereagh League competition in 2022 and a tight match could well be on the cards.

Golfers prepare for Men’s Open this weekend

With the rain on the weekend, the only Men’s Golf played was on Anzac Day and even then there were only six players who turned up.

Peter ‘China’ Brien blitzed the field finishing with 41 stableford points ahead of Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence who scored 37 points.

It’s pretty clear the Cobar Open is coming up, with ‘China’ playing off a nice, safe handicap of 17 and conveniently running in top form at just the right time—champion golfers seem to be able to do that.

He also picked up a Nearest the Pin prize on the 8th hole, ‘Ding’ won the 7th and Geoff ‘Herb’ Dunne won the prize on the 3rd hole.

The Match Play competition nominations have officially closed with only seven golfers nominated.

Anyone who has not nominated and still wishes to play should contact captain Alec Fraser by the weekend.

This weekend is the Cobar Open with Epiroc sponsoring the Herford Cup on Saturday and the CD Pretty Cup on Sunday.

Camels ambush the competition’s premiers

That put Cobar on the attack and on the following set play, number eight Jayden Harvey reached over the line to touch down.

At half time the scoreline was 17-7 in favour of the Camels.

The fourth Fijian, Waisea Kaliseiwaqa Bale (Waisea) took his place in the forwards, but it was experienced tight head prop Mark Aumua who showed the way with his brutal and punishing tackling for Cobar to take control of the rucks and close out the well-drilled Walgett forwards for long periods.

Walgett was a much more disciplined side in the second half.

It was clear the Rams were to play the second half to their strengths—structured play, ball retention and to take advantage of any penalties.

Walgett scored first to trail 14-17 after susCobar Camels’ Kameli Rokotuiloma (ball carrier) breaking away from his Walgett Rams taining constant pressure against the Camels opposition with support from Marika Tuilau and Dave Johnson. Kameli later passed off who predictably gave away too many penalties. to Marika who went on to score.
