Rugby players reminisce on 65 years

Cobar Camels Rugby Union Club former players, Darby Warner (who played 306 First Grade games for Cobar from 1967 to 1983); Bruce Harland (who played from 1960 to 1968 and toured New Zealand with the Australian Wallabies in 1962); Peter Payne (former player, coach and sponsor who played from 1968 through to 2007 in three grades and Old Boys); and Kel Ellicott (who is credited as Cobar’s hard man of rugby and played from 1968 through to 2007) were among some of the members who were invited to share their favourite memories of the club at their 65th Reunion dinner on Saturday at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval.

Fuel Burners’ social Poker Run proves to be lots of fun

Pictured are some of the participants in the Cobar Dust Bowl Fuel Burners club’s Poker Run on Saturday including Julie Fairbank, Cathy Francisco, Lachlan Francisco, Wendy Maher and Kylie Bastick with their vehicles. The Dustbowl Fuel Burners held a Poker Run on Saturday with drivers and passengers in 16 cars and two motorbikes participating.

Starting at Cobar, participants then had morning tea at Byrock, lunch at Girilambone, followed by afternoon tea at Hermidale and then finished back in Cobar.

At each destination, participants got to pick a card and at the end of the run the club would see who got dealt the best hand.

Marie and Shane ‘Snake’ Lawrence managed to pick some great cards to finish with the best hand of the day.

There was an opportunity to dress up in a theme and this prize was won by the Francisco family, who were driving their Volkswagen Kombi van dressed up as hippies.

There was also a category for Non Historic Vehicles which was won by a work ute, with Dave and Kylie Bastick driving their muddy Landcruiser.

There was a quiz with observation questions and general car related questions to be answered along the way with travel buddies Trish Haines and Carol Pritchard the winners.

The Hard Luck award went to Bob and Wendy Maher who shredded a rear tyre during the trip.

The club’s publicity officer Cathy Francisco reports it was a fantastic day out.

During his time in Cobar, Mr Miller has also overseen a long list of capital improvements including: the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool refurbishment, the Great Cobar Museum refurbishment, the Cobar Youth & Community Centre refurbishment, the Cobar Library extension, the Lilliane Brady Village extension (and to having the facility now fully staffed), upgrades to Drummond Park and other Council parks, the construction of the Miners Memorial, upgrades to Dalton Park Horse Sports Complex, the construction of a new Water Treatment plant and the sewerage system upgrade.

He has also witnessed the commencement of upgrades to Ward Oval and the start of the construction of a new 88 place Early Learning Centre.

Mr Miller said while Council has been fortunate in securing a number of grants from the Federal and State governments for these projects, he said it’s a credit to councillors as to Cobar Shire Council staff members Sandra Davey, Summer Patterson, Peter Vlatko, the way they have been spent.

Khan’s donates to CatholicCare

Khan’s SUPA IGA hosted a donation drive within the Marshall Street store by its staff members. The staff banded together to donate approximately $200 worth of food, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products to CatholicCare to help support their work in the Cobar community. Amanda Kilpatrick from CatholicCare said the pantry items will help local families who are struggling and may need some extra support. “It was a beautiful gesture by locals, and we very much appreciate it,” she said. ▪ Photo contributed

$1.7M in funding Cobar Shire Council has been allocated more than $1.7 million from the latest round of the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

The allocation for each funding recipient takes into consideration factors such as population and road length in each local area.

In comparison with neighbouring shires, Bourke Shire Council received $1.8M from this round, Brewarrina ($1.2), Narromine ($1.4), Warren ($1.03), Forbes ($1.9), Parkes ($2.1), Narrabri ($2.3), Griffith ($1.6) and Dubbo ($3.3).

The funding was a two-part allocation, with Part A ($1,085,211) to be spent on a local road or community infrastructure project.

Councillors at last Thursday’s Ordinary Council Meeting discussed how the funds should be spent based on recommendations from council staff.

They voted that $885,211 would go towards planned upgrade work for the Lilliane Brady Village (bathrooms, entrance, office and storage space) with the balance of $200,000 from Part A to go to the Town Enhancement Program to be used for town beautification works to upgrade or replace street furniture, etc around town.

Part B of the allocation was $625,974 and can only be spent on eligible local rural, regional and outer urban road projects.

Council allocated $275,000 from Part B to their Bore Replacement Program and the balance of $350,974 will go towards the reinstatement of the footpath in Marshall Street (from Harvey Norman corner back to old Occidental Hotel vacant block).

The allocation of these funds will now be proposed to the Federal Government for final approval.

Volunteers grants

Community groups in the Parkes electorate are encouraged to apply now for a share of $66,225 in funding to support the work of their volunteers.

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said Expressions of Interest (EOI) in the Australian Government’s 2023-24 Volunteer Grants program are now open.

“We are lucky to have so many hardworking volunteers in the Parkes electorate who dedicate countless hours of their time to helping our communities,” Mr Coulton said.

“Whether it’s responding to emergencies with the State Emergency Service, volunteering with Meals on Wheels, or helping in the canteen at the junior football, our volunteers play an important role in our communities.

“The Volunteer Grants program was an initiative established by the former Coalition Government to support local volunteers, ensuring they can continue their valuable work in the community safely and appropriately.”

Mr Coulton said volunteer organisations can apply for grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 to help pay for equipment or for promotional activities that increase participation in volunteering. The grant may also be used to reimburse fuel costs and expenses associated with transport and training.

“I know how beneficial these grants have been to previous recipients over the years, so I encourage all eligible organisations to submit an expression of interest.”

Eligible organisations must submit an EOI to be considered for a grant.

Mr Coulton, with the assistance of a committee of local leaders, will consider the submissions and nominate projects up to the funding cap of $66,225.

ROAR to receive $5,000 Essential Energy donation

Essential Energy announced this week that Cobar’s Rural Outback Animal Rescue/Respite (ROAR) charity, is one of the 2023 Community Choices Champions.

Since June, organisations have been able to nominate for the program, with more than 490 making it through to the voting stage where 170,000 votes were cast.

Essential Energy runs the Community Choices Program each year, providing $250,000 in funding, with the community deciding which groups receive the funding.

Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Anne Pearson said they were proud to support grassroot organisations through their Community Choices program.

“With our employees living and working in the communities we serve, Essential Energy remains committed to supporting the many registered charities, not-for-profit and community groups, community halls, schools and sporting clubs across our network,” Ms Pearson said.

This year Essential Energy increased funding to a total of $250,000 to be shared between eligible groups across 20 zones throughout their network footprint.

This meant $5,000 being available to groups with the most votes in their region (which included Cobar’s ROAR), then the amounts for second and third place also increased to $3,500 and $2,750 respectively.

“These organisations are truly the backbone of our communities, and they deserve our ongoing support,” Ms Pearson said.

About a dozen interested young people (plus their parents) attended the CSA Mine’s 2024 Apprentice Intake Community Information Session at the Cobar TAFE Connected Learning Centre last Wednesday night. We hear replacements for both are currently being finalised.

$100,000 BASE + 3.5% RESIDENTIAL ALLOWANCE + 11% SUPER 7 DAYS ON / 7 DAYS OFF - 7 NIGHTS ON / 7 NIGHTS OFF ROSTER CSA Mine are looking for Trades Assistants to join the Mobile Maintenance team. This role will see you responsible for the daily refuelling and servicing of Mobile Maintenance equipment throughout the mine including undertaking daily inspections of equipment. When required you will assist in general servicing of equipment within the workshop and will assist with stores duties including loading and unloading trucks and cages.

In this role you will be responsible for: • Refuelling Mobile Maintenance equipment • Conduct daily inspections on equipment • Provide prompt feedback to Supervisors and Sandvik site PSA’s when issues/defects are found • Accurately record fuel and oil volumes as well as hour meter readings on all equipment • Service Mobile Plant equipment when required • Assist the Store when required – loading/unloading trucks and cages • Monitor, maintain and check equipment and materials • General housekeeping and operational process activities About you: • Current Australian Manual Driver’s Licence and Forklift ticket • Mining experience and a mechanical trade certificate (highly regarded) • Underground mechanical maintenance experience in mobile fleet including, but not limited to, Sandvik, Epiroc and Caterpillar equipment (highly regarded) • Competent in equipment servicing and refuelling of mobile mining equipment (highly regarded) • Previous experience in operating a fuel and lube service truck (highly regarded) • High commitment to a positive safety culture Conditions: This is a 7/7 days/nights continuous shift, residential roster. 12 weeks of transit accommodation is provided to assist the successful applicant to source their own accommodation locally. A bowls Championship Singles match was played between Gerard Livingston and David ‘Ooze’ Knight at the Golfie on Saturday.

Livingston clearly demonstrated his ability to stand his ground and consistently built his advantage end by end which dictated the end result of his + 10 win. Livingston now moves through to the next round.

A Pairs Championships game was played on Sunday with Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Barry Bargwanna taking on David ‘Ooze’ Knight and John ‘Shark’ Daly.

Team Duck dominated the game to win by +18 which takes them through to the next round of the competition.

Sunday’s social bowls game was light on for numbers, obviously due to inclement weather conditions, and also possibly in the aftermath of a very successful Inter Mine Golf Challenge the day before.

Paul Kershaw and David Thomas finished with a +1 win over Tony Polack and visitor from Maitland, David Avery. Polack and Avery had led for 10 ends out of 11 before Kershaw and Thomas claimed the win.

It was the same end result with the other social pairs game between Alec Fraser/Allan Gardoll and Karen Daly/Peter ‘China’ Brien with Fraser and Gardoll winning by +1 on the last end.

Both Mini’s matches in the Cobar Junior Soccer Club competition on Saturday morning were exciting games with a total of eight goals scored.

Rangers got the better of Rovers to win their match 4-1, while United finished with a 3-0 win over Wanderers.

Darcy Geppert was invaluable for Rangers netting all four of their goals while Jessie Roulston found the back of the net to score for Rovers.

Max Preisig scored all three goals for his United team to help them to their win over Wanderers.

The Wanderers team played well and, despite not scoring a goal, it’s reported they had a lot of fun.

The Mini’s Gumnuts Milkshake awards were earned by Jack Joss, Juan Engelbrecht, Dayna Armstrong and Jessie Roulston.

The Cobar Hotbake Donut Awards went to Ivy Joss, Noah Seymour, Henry Thompson and Lincoln Griffiths.

The Seniors game was a high scoring match with the ball spending equal time at both ends of the field with Wanderers eventually finishing with a narrow 5-4 win over Rangers.

The Longest Drive prizes were won by Doug Thorpe and Fay Hardwick while the straightest drives went to Mark Martin and Wan Sipatsa.

Organisers were thrilled with the turn out and the generosity of local businesses that donated to the event.

Cobar benefitted from those who made the trip with motels full and players spending up in town.

Although the weather was close to perfect on Saturday, Sunday however was a different story with rain overnight on Saturday closing the course for play on Sunday.

In the Ladies’ competition, a Stableford game was played last Wednesday with Sally Bannister the winner with 37 points from Brenda Fugar (35), Fran Samios (35) and Fay Hardwick on 32 points.

The closest to the pin on the 15th hole were Julie Livingston, Geraldine Francisco and Ann Dunn.
