Driver charged after man killed near Tilpa

Incumbent State Member for Barwon Roy Butler, was in Cobar on Monday chatting to locals about things that matter to them and what they’d like to see happening in Barwon. Subjects discussed included water security for the Murray Darling Basin, the need to upgrade the Cobar Fire Station, roads, health, National Parks and access to community transport for health care needs.

A driver has been charged after a man was struck and killed near Tilpa last week.

Emergency services were called to Nelyambo Bridge Road, near Tilpa, at about 12.30am on Thursday following reports a man had been hit by a ute.

The alleged driver of the vehicle, a 38-year -old man, stopped and rendered first aid to the 29-year-old man.

The driver alerted NSW Ambulance paramedics and drove the injured man, meeting them on the Barrier Highway.

The injured man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, he died at the scene.

The driver was uninjured.

Officers attached to Central North Police District attended and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Following inquiries, the driver was later arrested at Cobar Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, and negligent driving occasioning death.

He was granted conditional bail and is to appear before Cobar Local Court later this month.

Cobar Shire Council has approved $15,500 worth of donations to local community and sporting groups.

Council received 10 applications (totalling $32,000) from various local groups requesting donations as part of Council’s annual Donations Policy.

Three of the 10 requests were granted the full amounts they had applied for (Cobar Netball Association—$1,200 for assistance with lighting costs and court hire fees; Cobar Little Athletics Club—$1,000 for assistance with lighting costs; and Cobar Girl Guides— $1,500 to offset rates).

Seven other groups were approved for donations of $1,500 each and included: Cobar Pony Club (for annual charges assistance); Cobar Auto Club (for council rates and water); Cobar Pistol Club (for rate arrears); Cobar Clay Target Club (assist with running annual tournament); St John’s School (to assist with running school bazaar); and Cobar Rugby Union Club (general sponsorship).

Councillors were advised that Council also makes a further contribution (to a maximum of $25,000) to the Cobar Roosters Rugby League Club towards the cost of water at Tom Knight Memorial Oval (which is costed to Parks and Gardens in Council’s budget).

As part of the donations approval, it was also recommended that Council continue to contribute $200 Cobar Quids each to Cobar High School, Cobar Public School and St John’s School for their end of year awards and $200 cash to Euabalong West Primary School for its end of year awards.

Councillors approved the listed donations which all complied with the policy requirements and are in line with donation amounts made in previous years.

The school’s careers advisor, Megan Nicholson said all of the students are required to complete a minimum of 100 days of work over two years (apart from Alice who needs to complete 180 days).

“Students also need to manage their time appropriately to make sure they are keeping up with their other subject commitments,” Mrs Nicholson said.

She said the school-based training programs have had very good results All six of the students who completed their two year traineeships last year have gained full time work locally and two of those have also gone on to undertake further studies.

A week of events to celebrate women

Instead of just celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8 this year, Cobar Shire Council will be celebrating a Week of Women (WOW) from March 6 to March 11!

Cobar Shire was successful in securing a $5,000 NSW Government grant to provide the week-long WOW program of activities to engage local women.

Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said the NSW Government is providing $200,000 in grants to support Women’s Week events that help connect and celebrate the incredible contributions of women in our state.

“From Broken Hill to Byron Bay, we are bringing women together to celebrate and inspire each other.

“This program of events is the biggest ever and will deliver a wide range of practical supports that will benefit women right across our fabulous State,” Mrs Taylor said.

“This year, we have doubled the funding to give as many women as possible the opportunity to get involved in NSW Women’s Week.

Rotary’s Men’s Health Education Rural Van (MHERV) has a very good track record of helping to save men’s lives.

An initiative of the Rotary Club of Warners Bay, MHERV provides a Registered Nurse to undertake free basic check-ups for “blokes” (and also for ladies).

Over the past four years MHERV has seen over 12,000 people and potentially saved over 450 people from a severe health event.

On average, approximately four per cent of people who visited the van were recommended to seek urgent medical attention, around 40 per cent were advised to follow up on an issue with their GP within the next week while 56 per cent of men who visited were encouraged to “just keep up the good work”.

MHERV is supported by Rotary clubs and other community groups in each area it visits and it also has the support of the Royal Freemasons Benevolent Institution (RFBI).

Cobar Rotary Club’s Gordon Hill advocates the good work of the van and encourages locals to take advantage of the free health checks when the van visits later this month.

“The purpose-built MHERV van is staffed by a male Nurse, Bill Power who carries out free health checks testing blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar (Diabetes) levels.

“The consultation takes about 10 minutes and provides immediate results, helping to improve health outcomes for men,” Mr Hill said.

“Bill has the knack of being able to relax even the most stressed clients.

“During the confidential consultation, Bill takes the opportunity to also chat about other health related concerns, including state of mind.”

Local group hopes to re-kindle the VIEW spirit in Cobar Cobar VIEW Club’s annual general meeting last Tuesday at the Empire Hotel attracted 15 ladies eager to re-kindle the spirit of VIEW, which is the Voice, Interests and Education of Women.

VIEW does this within the community while also supporting the work of the Smith Family charity’s Learning for Life student program.

Cobar Tourism Officer Demi Smith was invited to chair the election which resulted in the return of the previous committee with Enid English as president, Kate Winders (vice president and zone delegate), Lillian Simpson (treasurer) and Bev Anderson (secretary and publicity officer). The program officer’s role will be covered by the committee with valued input from all members.

Mrs Anderson said decreasing membership is an ongoing problem within many volunteer groups and the Cobar club is keen to invite women, whether local or new to Cobar, to attend a meeting and discover what VIEW is all about.

“This year four disadvantaged students and their families will be supported with educational needs by our fundraising efforts and as a group we look forward to guest speakers, fundraising, special outings and events, monthly lunches and friendly interaction in a supportive environment,” Mrs Anderson said.

Numerous sightings of deceased or unwell ducks have recently been observed around town which has been a cause for concern among residents.

Locals have reported finding ducks in garden beds and on the side of the road with the waterbirds displaying symptoms of paralysis, lethargy and are unable to fly.

Local veterinarian Lauren Leicester said they have received a number of reports at the Kidman Way Veterinary Surgery of sick and dead ducks.

“We currently have two live ducks in isolation, however we have received numerous calls regarding other animals in town that people are concerned about where they have been found,” Lauren said.

Local Land Services District Veterinary Officer Zi Yi Lim told The Cobar Weekly they have also been made aware of the situation.

“There have been reports of several dead ducks in Cobar,” Zi said.

“These have followed on from an earlier ongoing investigation into duck deaths in the past fortnight.

“NSW Local Land Services has been investigating these, with assistance from the Department of Primary Industries.

“Several samples have been sent for laboratory analysis at the Registry of Australian Wildlife at Taronga Zoo in Sydney and the EPA has been contacted.”

He said Local Land Services has also been in contact with Cobar Shire Council, WIRES and the Kidman Way Veterinary Surgery, to see what they have found.

“We await results,” he said.

“In the meantime, the general public is advised to contact WIRES if sick birds are found and to report numbers/locations of dead birds to Local Land Services to help understand which areas are most affected.

“General precautions, such as wearing gloves, washing hands, and keeping pets away from dead birds should be observed.

“Double bagging when disposing of dead birds is advised.”

Lauren also advises if you find a sick or injured duck take them to the vet clinic or call WIRES. “Please do not take them to the Newey or Res. “The cause of these deaths is still under investigation,” she said.

Funding to create ‘greenspots’ in the Cobar area

The Western Local Land Services (Western LLs) team at Cobar will receive $198,885 to create and enhance ‘greenspots’ on six properties in the Cobar area.

The ‘greenspots’ (mesic refugia) aim to help conserve threatened species which will ultimately have benefits for both the environment and grazing farming families.

The $4 million worth of funding through the NSW Government’s Environmental Trust is aimed at empowering communities to protect and restore local environments.

NSW Department of Planning and Environment’s Contestable Grants Officer Sara Ormond said the 2022-23 Environmental Restoration and Rehabilitation grants help local communities protect the animals and plants that make their regions special.

You will work in a team that is focused on safety, while driving to meet the plan. VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE ASSISTANT The Visitor Information Centre Assistant is responsible for providing the highest quality customer service to visitors at the Great Cobar Museum, including reception duties, administrative support, marketing and general information about local attractions and business to contribute to a vibrant and sustainable tourism industry for our town.

Just one point was the difference in the final scores in both games of the Junior Touch competition, 9-12 years age group, last week.

Blue Powerade continued their hold on the top of the ladder with a tit-for-tat 8-7 win over Redbacks, while SpongeBobs grabbed the match points when they just beat Oranges, 10-9.

George McDonald’s three first half tries helped Powerade to get their nose in front 6-5 at half time, and another two second half tries helped to seal their victory.

Zara Patterson and Judd Josephson also contributed a try each to their final tally.

Tommy George kept the Redbacks in touch, also scoring five tries in the game, with Dusty McDonald responsible for their other two points.

The referees Best & Fairest points all went to Redbacks players, Holly Watt, Clair Cousins and Harlym Curtis.

Ella Oborn and Charlie Nicholson, with two tries each led the scoring for SpongeBobs in their one point win over Oranges.

Indie Burke, Alfie Toomey and Billy Watt were SpongeBobs other try scorers.

Tries for Oranges came from Talas Burke (3), Harpa Martin (2) and London Hyland.

Harpa, Ella and Charlie earned the game’s B&F points.

Mad Dogs and Raiders finished as Round 4 winners in the 13-16 years competition last week.

Mad Dogs held on to their 5-3 half time lead to go on and finish with a 9-5 victory over the Yellow Bellies.

Alora Deppeler and Ashton Deitrich each scored twice for Mad Dogs with team mates Ashley Cousins and Jayden Cryer also crossing for a try each.

Raiders had it pretty much all their own way in their 17-4 win over Gladiators.

Cowboys beaten in Brewery Shield grand final game Despite making a good start, the Cobar Cowboys were beaten by Gilgandra in the Brewery Shield grand final on Sunday at Gilgandra.

Cobar won the toss and elected to bat first and made a good start with opener Jay Egan scoring a quick 32 runs off 49 balls.

Egan was then dismissed LBW by Gilgandra bowler John Irving.

Through the middle overs of Cobar’s innings, the Gilgandra bowlers tightened up and bowled a good line, to take regular wickets and limit Cobar’s scoring opportunities.

The only other notable contributions to Cobar’s scoreboard were from Phillip Harley (24 not out) and Jade Buckman (12).

Cobar was ultimately bowled out for 126 runs in 47.3 overs, which was 30 to 40 runs short of what they would have liked.

In reply, Gilgandra chased down the target in 38.5 overs for the loss of five wickets.

Liam Zell top-scored for Gilgandra with 40 runs, while Matthew Everett contributed 34 runs to their total.

Golf “officially” A bowls “natural” A new ladies commences this golf competition Saturday tees off today On the last weekend before the “official” golf season starts, the final games in the Men’s Summer Golf competition were played on Saturday and Sunday.

For most of the players it was a chance to get in some much needed practice before the real golf kicks off this weekend.

There were 11 players who competed in Saturday’s Stableford event.

The best player on the day was, Mr Consistency, Bill Fugar, who scored 36 points, and just managed to hold off Tim Turton on 35 and Peter Robinson on 34.

Jarrod Marsden came 4th on 31.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Chris Powell on the 7th hole, Fugar on the 8th and Greg Clark won the prize on the 15th.

There were only six players for Sunday’s game with four of those, Fugar, Robinson, Peter Lawrence and Max Phillips, backing up from Saturday.

It looked like Fugar would win again, however he didn’t count on the fighting spirit of the Tilpa mailman, Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence, who pipped him at the post by one point, 33 to 32.

The official golf season commences this Saturday, with an individual Stableford event with an early tee-off time of 9am.

There will be a Par event on Sunday with normal tee-off time of 12.30pm.

The NSW Four-Ball-Best-Ball Championships will be held this weekend at Holbrook.

Hasson and fiancé Gerald Mackay (who’s been playing with the Cobar Roosters First Grade side for the past three seasons) have been living in Nyngan and have been travelling to Cobar to train and play each week.

Gerald is now working in Cobar and the couple are currently packing up to make the move to Cobar.

Hasson has previous experience coaching Nyngan High School girls teams and also Nyngan’s Under 16s League Tag side, who she coached to a grand final win.

Hasson said she’s very excited to take on the Roosterettes coaching role.

“I’m a bit of a perfectionist but will deliver more of a leadership role.”

She said she can bring experience, progression, competitiveness and energy to the team and also to the club this season.

“Everything I have learnt throughout the years, I want to share with the girls and community out here.

“A team culture within the girls and the other Roosters grades is something we will focus on as well,” she said.

Her main goals for the team this season are to progress players’ skills, to create a positive team culture environment and to get the girls to finals.

“I have been observing, luckily the girls have been able to combine group training sessions with the men but I’m excited to take over and see where we are at,” she said.

“It’s great to see a fair few girls have been committed to training every week.

“We’re keen to hit pre-season and get ready for the knock-out carnival which is coming up really quickly.”

Kayla welcomes any ladies who are thinking of playing a new sport or any returning players, to join them at training at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Monday and Wednesday nights.

Cobar hosts swim meet

Cobar swimmers Isabelle Gillette, Ashley Cousins, Malina Bottom, Alora Deppeler, Amara Bottom and Taylah Wyllie, lining up before their mixed ages 100 metres breaststroke event at the Cobar Swimming Club Carnival on Saturday at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool. The carnival attracted 57 swimmers from Cobar, Dubbo, Nyngan, Narromine and Tottenham and, for a number of young Cobar swimmers, it was their first time competing at a carnival. There were lots of personal best times recorded by the Cobar club members. There were also a large number of disqualifications by the tough carnival referee for technical infringements in breaststroke and butterfly events. This year’s carnival also included an ‘anything but a recognisable stroke’ novelty event with Molly Fitzsimmons, William Salmon, Clair Cousins and Henry Knight taking out first place. It provided an opportunity for kids to ignore their training and swim their fastest but without using a recognised stroke!

Cobar’s Pennants play was on point

The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club Open Pennants bowls team made the trip to Bourke on Sunday for the second round of the 2023 Pennants season, finishing the day with a win.

The day however had started off very much on the wrong foot for the Cobar team with Barry Bargwanna, Doug Hudson, Mike Sargent and Craig Grimmond chasing their tail from the outset in their game against their Bourke opposition.

Some class bowling from the Bourke skipper gave them an early 9-0 lead which proved too much for the Cobar side to reign back in.

Despite a keen fightback, Bourke were just too strong, taking the game 19-11.

Rink 2’s game was a tight tussle from the start with neither team able to dictate.

At the half way mark the Cobar team of Bian Smith, Shane Carter, Peter Goonrey and Gerard Livingston finally gelled, taking a much needed five shots win on that end to lead 10-6; however the Bourke team refused to lay down, fighting back to level at 17 - all with one end left to play.

The nail-biter of a game finally went Cobar’s way with a one shot win with Smith the player of the game.

For Cobar all the action was on rink 3 where Dean McLeod, Peter Brien, Don Roberts and Kyle Roberts all played brilliantly to absolutely smash their opponents 32-13.

The overall score was 61-49 in Cobar’s favour and they gained nine valuable points for the win.

The next Pennants game is in Nyngan in two weeks time.

All bowlers are requested to play next Sunday prior to the selectors meeting.

All championships draws will also be finalised that day so bowlers are reminded to nominate their teams.—Completely Biased
