The 2022 Australia Day award winners were announced yesterday at Cobar’s Australia Day celebrations at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool. This year’s recipients included: Cobar Girl Guides (Young Citizens of the Year), Gordon Hill (Citizen of the Year), Barry Knight (Bossie Mitchell Services to the Community), Cobar Business Association (Community Event of the Year) and Cobar Camels Rugby Union Club Return and Earn volunteers (Environment and Sustainability). Gordon, Guides, Barry, Business and Camels commended Gordon Hill was named Cobar’s Citizen of the Year for 2021 at yesterday’s Australia Day Awards ceremony at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

According to his nomination, Gordon is very much committed to the Cobar community and is always the first to put his hand up to help anyone in need.

The award recognises Gordon’s work over the past year in his many volunteer roles as a member of the Rotary Club of Cobar, the Copper City Men’s Shed, State Emergency Services, Cobar Health Council and the Cobar Community Services board.

“Throughout the pandemic, Gordon has continued to service the community of Cobar and keep community organisations going through tough times and offering support where possible,” his nomination reads.

Also in recognition of his community efforts, last year Gordon (and his wife Therese) were awarded Rotary’s prestigious Paul Harris Fellows Award for their ongoing work and support for the Rotary Club of Cobar Drought Appeal.

The 2021 Young Citizen of the Year award was shared by the Cobar Girl Guides group who have displayed “true community spirit” this past year.

The Cobar Girl Guides participated in the Anzac Day and Christmas Street Parade community events, held a dog wash fundraiser for ROAR (Rural Outback Animal Rescue/

Respite), helped Cobar Shire Council with the packing and delivery of Christmas hampers to senior residents and also assisted in the judging of the town’s Christmas Cheer/Lights competition.

Barry Knight picked up the Bossie Mitchell Services to the Community Award.

June 2021 saw the culmination of Barry’s many hard years of work with the Cobar Miners Memorial project officially opened.

The award recognises Gordon’s work over the past year in his many volunteer roles ...

Barry has been the driving force behind the construction of the memorial and he continued his fundraising efforts in 2021 to ensure a few extra features could be included in the final build.

He continues to have an ongoing interest in its use and maintenance.

Also last year, Barry was instrumental in helping to get the Cobar Little Athletics Club back on track and his fundraising efforts have helped the club to buy a great deal of new equipment.

Barry also spent time last year helping to coordinate a Cobar Roosters Rugby League Reunion, which unfortunately could not take place due to COVID restrictions.

Barry was also involved with a number of community groups and has lent assistance to

various committees including: Tourism Advisory; Iron Ringers; Brennan Centre; and RSL Sub Branch.

The Cobar Business Association’s 2021 Christmas Street Parade and Gala Shopping Night on December 3 collected the Community Event of the Year award.

According to its nomination, the annual street parade is an event that everyone in the whole community can be involved in including local businesses, sporting and community groups and last year’s event attracted a big crowd of spectators.

The Association’s annual Christmas Street Parade & Gala Shopping Night has grown over the years and with additional sponsorship for the 2021 night, the association was able to provide extra entertainment in the form of an acrobatic troupe and music by a local band to round out the night.

It’s the second year running the Christmas Street Parade & Gala Shopping Night has won the Community Event of the Year award and the third time the association has won this category having also been a winner back in 2015.

The 2021 Environmental & Sustainability Award was collected by the Cobar Camels Rugby Union Club volunteer group for their efforts in running the Return and Earn facility.

The award recognises the innovative principles and actions of the group in working towards developing a more sustainable community.

Between January and December 2021, the Cobar Return and Earn facility collected 600,000 cans and bottles for recycling preventing tonnes of rubbish from going into landfill.

Cobar voters to go to the polls

Cobar Shire voters will go to the polls next month to elect one councillor to fill the vacant position on Cobar Shire Council.

A date for the Local Government byelection was set last week (February 26) with nominations for the position of one vacant Councillor closing at 12noon today.

While many Councils decided their full Council line-up last month at the state-wide Local Government elections, there was no need for Cobar Shire voters to go to the polls as there were only 11 nominations received for the 12 vacant positions.

The 11 were then automatically elected under section 311 of the Local Government Act 1993 and were sworn in at their first Ordinary Council Meeting on December 9.

One councillor only is to be elected at next month’s by-election.

If more than one candidate nominates for the position, the by-election will be held on February 26, however if there is only one nominee, they will be duly elected to the vacant position.

The successful candidate will join the current council which is made up of eight returning councillors (Mayor Peter Abbott, Deputy Mayor Jarrod Marsden, Cr Harley Toomey, Cr Bob Sinclair, Cr Janine Lea-Barrett, Cr Peter Maxwell, Cr Julie Payne and Cr Kate Winders) along with one former councillor (Cr Tony Chaplain who previously served from 1999 to 2008) and two new faces (Cr Kain Neale and Cr Lillian Simpson).

If however no one nominates to stand by noon today, another by-election will be called until the position is filled.

CSA makes big commitment to training CSA Mine has taken on a large cohort of apprentices for 2022 which includes offering seven full time apprenticeships and five school-based apprenticeships across five different trades.

A special apprentice induction was held for the big group at the mine last Thursday led by the mine’s Training Advisor and Apprentice Facilitator Wade Greenwood.

The induction included talks from some of the mine’s leadership team including General Manager Peter Christen, Jade Buckman, Matthew Ireland, Brandt Pattison and David Hobden.

They outlined their journeys in mining with some also starting out their mining careers as Tradies.

This year the mine has taken on two fulltime Heavy Diesel Mechanics (Cameron Littlehales and Ryan Bird), two Auto Electricians (Georgie Buckman and Zane Taylor), one Boilermaker (Jarrod Blake), a Fitter and Machinist (Clancy Dunne) and an Electrician (Samuel Shepherd).

Also newly recruited are five school-based apprentices which include two Auto Electricians (Tadgh McMullen and Reynold Mugugia), two Boilermakers (Jordan Bruce and Kaeleb Saunders) and a Heavy Diesel Mechanic (Isabella Morton).

Ryley Morley has also successfully converted from a school-based first year apprentice to a fulltime first year Light Vehicle apprentice at the end of 2021.

Imitation firearm seized

A 21 year old man was arrested and charged at Cobar Police Station on Monday afternoon after he used an imitation gun to threaten another person. Police seized the gel blaster pistol (which resembles a Glock handgun) from a home in Wetherell Crescent at 4.20pm after executing a search warrant on the premises. The man was charged with intimidation and possess a prohibited firearm and was bailed to appear at Cobar Local Court next month. According to NSW laws, ‘imitation firearms’ are also treated as firearms. An ‘imitation firearm’ is an object that regardless of colour, weight or composition or the presence or absence of any moveable parts, substantially duplicates in appearance a firearm (apart from any object that is produced and identified as a children’s toy). If a person is in possession of an air gun, that imitates a more serious firearm, they can be found guilty of a more serious offence. In NSW, possessing or using a firearm, including a BB gun or gel blaster, without a licence or permit carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment. ▪ Photo supplied

COVID plan for students’ return

The NSW Government has outlined its COVID-smart plan for students returning to school.

The plan aims to minimise the risk of transmitting the virus and will allow teachers and pupils to return safely to the classroom.

As part of the new measures, every student and teacher in NSW government and nongovernment schools will be able to receive rapid antigen test (RAT) kits before they return to school.

The COVID-Smart Plan to keep schools open and students safe includes: Twice a week surveillance testing for primary and high school students, school staff and early childhood staff. Surveillance testing will be undertaken for the first four weeks of term, with two weeks of supply distributed before term starts.

Mandatory mask wearing for all staff and high school students, with masks encouraged for children in primary schools.

Limiting interaction between year groups.

Limiting visitors to those providing essential curriculum and wellbeing support.

COVID-safe settings in place for music, sport and excursions.

Maximising natural and mechanical ventilation, with air purifiers dispatched to where they are needed.

Contingency plans will be put in place to manage any disruptions to the workforce.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said supporting students to return safely to the classroom is vital after two years of disruption to their education.

“Students learn best at school, some students have spent a quarter of their schooling at home.

“We’re committed to bringing students back safely,” Mr Perrottet said.

“New COVID-smart measures will help make this happen, including surveillance testing both students and staff twice weekly with RATs. “What is most important about this approach is that it allows students to enjoy all aspects of their schooling in a safe and sensible way.

“The government is distributing more than 12 million RATs to over 3,150 government, non-government schools and early childhood centres to assist with surveillance testing of staff and students.”

Restrictions stay for another month Nominations are open for candidates who wish to stand in the Cobar local council by-elections on Saturday, February 26.

Nominations CLOSE 12 noon, on January 27.

Late applications cannot be accepted.

The NSW Government has extended current restrictions for a further month as part of their measured response to managing COVID-19.

The following restrictions will remain in place until the end of February: the one person per two square metre rule applies at all indoors hospitality venues, including pubs, clubs, restaurants, cafes and nightclubs; Masks are required in all indoor settings (except residences); QR code check-ins are compulsory at certain premises, including hospitality venues and retail shops; Singing and dancing is not permitted in hospitality venues, entertainment facilities, nightclubs, indoor music festivals and indoor major recreation facilities (except for weddings, performers, instructors and students).

The restrictions aim to protect the community and the health system.

Transported to Hawaii for the hols

Local music teacher Judy Toomey helped to transport a group of local youth to Hawaii last week at the Cobar Shire Library when she offered students tips on how to play the ukulele. The classes to learn to play the iconic Hawaiian instrument were offered as part of Cobar Shire Council’s school holiday youth activities. The miniature four-string guitar embraces Hawaiian culture and it’s reported that just about anyone can learn to play it. Snelson steps down from Show Society’s top job

After close to 15 years of service, Cobar Show Society’s longest serving president, David Snelson, has stepped down from the top job.

David relinquished the president’s reins to the newly elected president Caden Mackay at the Society’s annual general meeting on Sunday at Ward Oval.

David’s almost 15 years of service to the Cobar Show Society was given in two separate stints and eclipses the previous long service record of 13 consecutive years set by David’s father, Peter Snelson.

David told The Cobar Weekly he’d tried to step down from the role last year however there had been no one else willing to take it on.

“It’s time for me to move on and make way for younger people to get involved in the running of the Cobar Show,” he said.

“I’m happy to continue to be involved and help out where I can,” he announced at Sunday’s meeting.

The group took him up on the offer and elected him as a joint vice president along with Paul Evans.

Kym Miller was returned as the group’s treasurer and Colette Cohen was re-elected as secretary with Sharon Snelson elected as assistant secretary.

Colette said it was great to see all of the executive positions filled at the meeting and to welcome some new faces, including a few juniors, to help out with the running of this year’s Cobar Show.

DEMOLITION OF GRANDSTAND AT WARD OVAL As part of current upgrades at Ward Oval, demolition of the existing grandstand will be undertaken between February 7 and February 26, 2022. The demolition will be undertaken in a controlled and meticulous manner and should have minimal impact on surrounding areas of the oval.

Vaccination pop-up clinic to return Our Australia Day The Western NSW Local Health District (Western NSWLHD) will be offering pop-up COVID vaccination clinics in Cobar next Tuesday and Wednesday.

The clinics will be held at the Cobar Services Club and bookings are essential.

A spokesperson for Western NSWLHD said appointment times are limited.

People looking to receive their first, second, booster or kids dose may make a booking.

Kids Pfizer will be available to those aged 511 years and anyone aged 5-15 years is required to be accompanied by their parent,

guardian or nominated carer.

Anyone seeking a second dose or their booster, is requested to take along evidence of their previous dose (s).

Only those 18 years and older are eligible to receive booster doses.

Those attending need to take a form of identification and their Medicare card.

People must not attend the clinic if they are awaiting a COVID-19 test result, are a close contact of a confirmed positive COVID case, are unwell or have recently tested positive for COVID on a PCR or Rapid Antigen Test.

Book your booster Locals pledge support for doctor Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) is urging everyone in the region to book an appointment for their booster as soon as possible, with demand expected to increase as the approved interval from the second dose of COVID-19 vaccination reduces to three months.

Mark Spittal, WNSWLHD Chief Executive, said the reduced interval means that most western area residents who received their vaccinations at a WNSWLHD clinic supported by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) are now eligible for their booster.

“We expect demand for appointments to increase as a result of that,” Mr Spittal said.

“For smaller areas of the District we also have a number of mobile community clinics booked in over the next few weeks.”

Mr Spittal also encouraged parents to book their children in to be vaccinated as soon as possible as demand for appointments for the 511 years age group remains high across the region.

He said they have increased the capacity of their clinics in order to get more children vaccinated before school returns.

“Remember, WNSWLHD hubs and clinics are not the only places to receive a vaccination or booster.

“In fact, we play a smaller role in the wider vaccination roll-out and the majority of vaccinations are delivered through GPs, pharmacies and the primary care network,” he said.

“Vaccination remains the best protection we have against serious illness from COVID-19 and it is also the best tool we have as individuals to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our entire community.

“Vaccination is the most important way we can be COVID-safe, but we also encourage everyone to continue with the regular behaviours we’ve become so familiar with to stay safe all the time.

“Wash and sanitise your hands regularly, check in using QR codes everywhere you go, wear your mask wherever required and if you can’t socially distance and make sure you have a ‘Plan C’ ready in case you or a household member is required to isolate.”

Local residents are concerned that a local doctor will no longer be bulk billing his patients.

One of the doctor’s patients, Mick Parnell, took to social media on Tuesday to alert the community of the situation and said he believed the doctor was “being unfairly treated” and had to stop bulk billing as a result of a rent increase.

Mr Parnell laid the blame at Cobar Shire Council who, he said, have continued to raise the doctor’s rent.

“Dr Indra has supported this town for many years and like other doctors has not left Cobar,” Mr Parnell wrote.

Cobar Shire Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko told The Cobar Weekly it was not appropriate to discuss the commercial lease Council has with the doctor in a public forum.

He did however confirmed the doctor has a lease with Council and the only increase made each year was in line with CPI. He said the rental figures for the doctor’s surgery quoted on social media were incorrect.

Mr Vlatko said Council is currently working with the doctor to renew his lease.

Leonard and Robyn Baker were thrilled to have celebrated their first Australia Day as Australian citizens yesterday at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

While the couple has lived in Australia for the past 15 year with their family, the pair only became Australian citizens last November.

MASTER PLAN CONSULTATION Cobar Shire Council has recently received funding through Resources for Regions to undertake a masterplan and business case for the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool. This document will pave the way for future upgrades at the Cobar pool and will help Council apply for future grant funding to be able to undertake the much-needed improvements at the pool.

Council has engaged Facility Design Group to do the masterplan and business case and as part of this process they will be facilitating consultation sessions in Cobar on February 9 and 10, 2022.

Community consultation sessions will be held in the Council Chambers, 36 Linsley Street, Cobar on: Wednesday February 9, at 1pm Thursday February 10, at 6pm.

Cobar Shire Council encourages all members of the community to attend and provide feedback and input into future plans.

Local landholders seeing improvements in invasive weeds Cobar Shire landholders who have been working closely with Western Local Land Services (Western LLS) to improve and sustain the condition of natural resources are now beginning to see positive results from the work they’ve undertaken.

The local landholders are part of a group of 25 landholders across the western area who have been contracted to carry out control works over close to 25,000 hectares for African boxthorn, mesquite and cactus, using a variety of control methods suitable for local conditions.

Senior Land Services Officer, Andrea Cashmere said one landholder is getting very good results using granular herbicide applied at the base of boxthorn plants.

“This method is the most time efficient and effective for them because the plants are scattered over a large open grassland.

“Opportunistic control is also undertaken while mustering sheep,” Ms Cashmere said.

Contract brush cutters are also being used in sensitive ecosystems.

“This is a great method of control as there is little soil disturbance and no suckering of boxthorn from roots left behind, as can happen with other mechanical removal,” she said.

“The landholders know what works for them and the country they manage.”

With African Boxthorn out competing the native understory and altering the structure of the vegetation community, as well as being a haven for pest animals such as foxes and rabBrush-cutting boxthorn is one of a number of different methods being employed by bits, the control works are being carried out in Western Local Land Services and local landholders in an effort to control invasive weeds. targeted areas to help protect Plains-wanderer ▪ Photo contributed habitat and Coolibah Black-Box threatened ecological communities.

In addition to this work, Western LLS is continuing to work with landholders to biologically control cactus using cochineal insects, with the insects attaching themselves to the host cactus drawing nutrients and moisture from the plant, eventually killing it.

Highway Patrol catch up with speeding driver

Cobar Highway Patrol officers caught up with a speeding driver near Hermidale recently who was detected travelling at 153km/hr.

The 43 year old male driver from Hamlyn Terrace was pulled over by the Highway Patrol at about 11.20am on Wednesday January 12, on Yarrandale Road near Hermidale after he was detected travelling at 153km/hr in the 100km/hr speed zone.

The man was issued with an infringement notice for exceed speed by more than 45kph (which comes with a $2,547 fine) and his driver’s licence was suspended immediately for a period of six months.

“Massive” copper intersection found at Canbelego Helix Resources Limited’s detection of a “massive” copper intersection at their Canbelego Copper Project has provided an encouraging start to the resumption of drilling.

The ASX listed company said recently completed diamond drill hole intersects revealed a further massive copper sulphide intersection on their Main Zone target.

Helix managing director Mike Rosenstreich said they had done a lot of work to understand the prospect scale geology and controls on the copper mineralization–including how to target some of the higher grade, massive coppersulphide shoots like they hit in May last year.

“It’s still very early days but we are also very interested to test the concept of repeat lodes which is typical for the ‘Cobar Style’ of copper deposits, which are often blind at surface or have small footprints but can extend for up to several thousand metres vertically,” Mr Rosenstreich said.

“The mineralisation we observed higher in the hole may correlate with anomalous copper mineralised zones hit at shallow levels in drill hole 5 last year. This fits with an observed trend in some other historical drill holes in the project area and has helped develop our emerging parallel lode target concept.”

Mr Rosenstreich said work was ongoing to update their geographical model based on the recent results.

He said Helix is also working on more prospects in the area.

Milkos finish their deliveries

After being in the local milk business for the past 17 years local Milkos Rick and Zela Deighton made their last dairy deliveries on Saturday. Zela (pictured above at right with new delivery driver Mel Russo) said they had been looking to sell the dairy delivery business for some time and recently took the chance to opt out of the contract to go and do something else. Zela said they haven’t however decided what that will be yet apart from doing plenty of neglected jobs around the house and yard.

Travel boost for regional seniors Applications are open for the expanded 2022 NSW Regional Seniors Travel Card, allowing even more seniors to pocket $250 to help with everyday travel costs.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the popular initiative, which has seen more than 690,000 cards issued to regional seniors since the start of 2020, has been extended for another two years.

“The NSW Regional Seniors Travel Card has been an overwhelming success, ensuring seniors in rural, regional and remote areas of the state are able to offset some of their costs for getting to the shops, to medical appointments, staying connected locally and with friends and family living in other parts of the State,” Mr Toole said.

“We know what a difference this is making to the lives of our regional seniors, so we’ve committed $246 million to continue the program until the end of 2023, as well as expand the eligibility to include seniors who are carers and those with disabilities.”

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said eligible applicants will receive a $250 pre-paid Visa card that can be used for fuel, taxis, pre-booked NSW TrainLink Regional trains and coaches, and select community transport services.

“By putting an extra $250 in the pockets of our regional seniors, we are boosting access to safe and convenient travel, as well as reducing the burden on people who often have fewer transport options than those living in the city,” Mr Farraway said.

“This initiative has also injected more than $131 million into regional economies, benefitting local taxi operators and fuel stations.”

In addition to the existing criteria, seniors can apply for a travel card if they are eligible for the Age Pension and receiving either a Disability Support Pension or Carer Payment from Services Australia.

• The RAT race continues in Cobar. As of Tuesday both supermarkets and the chemist report they still have not received any orders of rapid antigen tests (RATs). The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia has called for patience and understanding from the general public regarding the ongoing shortages of rapid antigen tests.

In addition to being hassled for RATs, many pharmacies are experiencing increased pressure with the National Booster Program in full swing and the commencement of children’s vaccines last week.

• The John Mitchell Pharmacy this week farewelled their pharmacist, Elsa Norville, who is heading back home to New Zealand.

Staff have described Elsa as a “wonderful asset to the pharmacy” and they are sad to see her leave. We’re sure many of her customers will also be sad to see Elsa go.

Responsibilities • Responsibility for all survey control required to achieve short to medium term production and development targets • Ensure development designs are marked up in a timely manner • Ensure all Production Designs are marked up in a timely manner • Conduct CMS Surveys and validate results • Conduct Asbuilt surveys as required • Maintain and improve mine models • Ensure compliance to legislative requirements and site standards • Carry out End Of Month Surveys • Undertake workplace inspections

Plenty of interest for Sandgreens Due to the large number of entries for the 2022 NSW Sandgreen Championships, Golf NSW has decided to conduct the tournament over two venues In addition to Dunedoo, Coolah has been selected as the other club to host the event in March.

Interested local golfers are advised nominations close next month.

January has been a big golf month for the Fraser family, with Stewart, Alec and Mark all having their moments in the limelight.

Stewart won the thrilling final of the Bill Bartlett Matchplay competition by just one hole after edging out Bian Smith on the18th hole.

Alec was elected the Men’s Golf captain at the club’s recent annual general meeting with his predecessor, Peter ‘China’ Brien, agreeing to stay on as vice captain.

All other committee positions remained the same as last year.

Mark Fraser finished as Saturday’s winner of a small field of seven players who contested the morning Stableford competition.

Fraser, with 37 stableford points had a comfortable win over ex-cricketer John Potter on 33 stableford points. (Word has it Potter will be playing a lot more golf after losing his Cobar BBL contract.)

Alec Fraser was in third place with 32 stableford points.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence on the 7th hole and Smedley Nicholson on the 8th hole.

Cowboys bow out

The Cobar Cowboys were outplayed by the Narromine visitors on Sunday at Ward Oval in what had been a “must win match” for Cobar in the Brewery Shield senior cricket competition.

Narromine batted first and the Cowboys made a solid start restricting them to 3/14 before Narromine’s Doug Potter (105) and Mitchell Russo (82) shared in a 185-run partnership that would ultimately take the game away from Cobar.

They took the score along to 4/199 after 32 overs and Narromine went on to be bowled out in the final over for 272 runs.

Cobar’s wicket takers were Mark Fraser, with 3/42, Jason Hampel (2/20) and Ryan Urquhart (2/36).

In reply, Cobar were bowled out for 117 runs after having been 9/ 63 at one stage.

Jason Hampel top-scored with 33 not out, Ryan Urquhart scored 22 runs and Tristan Everett added 16 runs to Cobar’s tally.

Fours champions Gerard Livingston, Tony Brown, Scott Mayne and Bian Smith have been crowned the 2021 Cobar Bowling & Golf Club’s Men’s Fours Bowls Champions after a convincing win in Saturday’s final.

Their opponents - Daniel Holt, Jim Goonrey, Skeet Goonrey and Dean Mcleod - were never really in the hunt with the writing on the wall at the 13th end when Livo & Co picked up six shots to lead 18-7. This lead continued to blow out to 24-7 after 16 ends and, despite an energetic late comeback by Team Holt, Livo & Co end up victorious at 24-16.

A Triples Championship game was contested on Sunday morning with Livo & Co (minus Scott Mayne) taking on Greg Read, Alan Knight and David Knight. The game was fairly even at the halfway mark before Team Read kicked into overdrive and scored 12 shots in six ends to crush their opposition, 2313. They now progress to the final.

As usual, Sunday’s social bowls was keenly contested with 14 bowlers turning out for a games of triples and two games of pairs.

Tom O. and Shane Carter had a great tussle with Mike Sargent and Dean McLeod to win by +4 while David Schofield and John Goonrey claimed the runner-up prize with a solid +6 win over John Daly and Jim Goonrey.

However all the action and yahooing was on Rink 9, where eventual winners of the day, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey, Darrel Jermyn and Glenn Ratcliffe, dished out a bowling lesson to Craig Grimmond, Karen Daly and John Claus with a +16 victory.—No bias

Buckman’s century not enough to save Nymagee A century from Nymagee’s Jade Buckman was no match for the batting onslaught by Empire in the 40 Overs Senior Cricket competition on Saturday.

Empire posted a massive total of 8/302 from 40 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat first out at Nymagee.

David Watson led the onslaught for Empire belting the Nymagee bowlers to all parts of the Nymagee oval. Watson finished with 82 not out off only 48 balls.

Tristen Everett added 45 runs (off 36 balls), Tarun Bheemireddy scored 42 runs, Tom McKenna contributed 35 runs (of 25 balls), Sam Plater scored 31 off 24 balls and Tim Hillam added a further 32 runs to Empire’s big tally.

Phil Harley was the best of Nymagee’s bowlers taking four wickets for 42 runs.

In reply, it was going to have to be some run chase if Nymagee was to pull off the win.

Nymagee’s opening batters, Jade Buckman and Rhys Lloyd shared in a 104-run opening partnership to start them off on the right foot, before Lloyd was dismissed for 46 runs in the first over after drinks.

Needing a further 198 runs off 20 overs, Nymagee’s innings fell apart as Empire’s bowlers Tom McKenna (4/40) and Tristan Everett (3/26) ripped through the middle order as the run rate pressure became too much for Nymagee.

Yabbies pretty much back to “normal” Things have pretty much returned to “normal” for the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club with attendance numbers back up last week and the 30 metres event was reinstated.

After the 30m handicapped freestyle event was modified to 25m the previous week (in preparation for Nationals competition), swimmers reverted to the 30m distance last week to train for the upcoming Western Districts carnival (which has not yet moved to the 25m event).

Swimmers performed better over the familiar distance with Jason Toomey and Murray Har-

land tying for first place with 0.03 seconds off their nominated times. Dave Mexted was the next best finisher with 0.18 seconds.

The 50m handicapped freestyle swim was hotly contested with Bill Fugar finishing out in front with 0.12 seconds off his nominated time.

Peter Christen claimed second place with 0.18 seconds off his time, marginally ahead of Harland on 0.19 for third place.

Harland put some distance between himself and the rest of the field in the 100m swim to win with 1.16 seconds off his time.

Christen was second on 1.38 and Chris Powell finished third (1.47 seconds).

Nymagee batsman Jade Buckman scored 101 runs out at Nymagee in the 40 Overs Senior Cricket competition on Saturday.

Sporting awards earned by Jacobson, Boland and Fairfull This year’s Australia Day sporting awards have been shared between Bianka Jacobson, Zac Boland and Axel Fairfull.

Bianka collected the Services to Sport Award for her involvement with Cobar Roosters Senior Rugby League, Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS), Cobar Junior Touch Football and the Cobar Mermaids Swimming Club.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s on the field or off, Bianka is always there to help out through committee meetings, refereeing games, coaching, running water, cooking the barbecue or jumping up on stage at a fundraiser to provide a good laugh,” her nomination reads.

“Bianka is an advocate and supporter of junior sport in Cobar and ensures the youth of

Cobar get a chance to participate, no matter the travel distance involved.”

She is often seen lending a hand with umpiring, assisting with travel or just running water for the players.

Horse rider, Zac Boland earned the Sports Person of the Year Award after a tremendous year representing the Cobar Pony Club at both Zone and State levels of competition.

Last April, Zac represented Zone 17 at the Royal Easter Show where his team finished in third place in their Showjumping class.

Zac was also named Best Boy Rider for Show Jumping.

After successfully competing at a One Day Event in May, Zac was one of six junior riders selected to represent NSW at Nationals for Show Jumping and a personal best performance from Zac helped his team to secure second place.

Zac personally also finished as the Reserve Champion Rider at Nationals.

Zac’s commitment to his sport and dedication to training is to be commended.

Axel Fairfull earned the prestigious Kerrigundi sporting award which recognises achievements at local, regional, state, national and international levels.

Axel represented Cobar High School and the town in a number of sports over the past year with much success.

In 2021, he was named the Junior Triathlete of the Year by the Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) club.

Luke and Hannah defend titles Entry numbers were up this year for the Australia Day Triathlon event organised by the Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool yesterday.

Young was the Gumnut Gifted Female winner with a time of 35.29.

The runner-up in the men’s class was Isaac Theakston (34.44) to collect the Red Earth Real Man prize and Laura Andrew was the women’s runner-up (47.22) collecting the BRilliams Brilliant Woman prize.

The quickest finishing team was Young & Old (Nauman Faisal and Chris Powell) with a time of 37.05 to collect the Stationery Essentials Essential Team award.

The Auto Club of Cobar will now be able to go ahead with their plans to upgrade their facilities at their grounds on Bourke Road thanks to a $60,000 NSW Government grant.

Minister for Western NSW Dugald Saunders announced last Friday the club had been successful in securing $60,000 worth of funding from Round 4 of the Stronger Country Communities Fund.

The upgrade work planned for the Auto Club of Cobar is one of 435 projects to share the $100 million allocated in this round to help improve the lives of people in regional NSW. “The Auto Club of Cobar has done things tough in recent times due to drought and COVID-19, and with a new committee to be formed at the upcoming AGM one thing they won’t have to worry about is paying for an upgraded all-purpose facility,” Mr Saunders said.

The funding will replace the club’s outdated Atco Hut canteen with a new shed that will be used as a canteen, clubhouse, first aid station, storage facility and shade.

“The new shed will be used for training and coaching, which is due to kick off in the next few weeks, as well as race events, which are due to commence when the weather cools down in April and May,” Mr Saunders said.

Auto Club of Cobar committee member JoLouise Brown, who helped with the club’s grant application, said they were thrilled to hear the news last week.

Mrs Brown said the grant application was made some time ago and the committee will need to reassess the project budget before commencing the work. She expects the funding will go most of the way to installing the new facilities however the club might possibly having to chip in with some funds to finish.
