Men’s Shed benefits from Sandvik Mining $5,000 donation Sandvik Mining last week donated $5,000 to the Copper City Men’s Shed to purchase a Dust Management machine for the shed.

Men’s Shed Coordinator Gordon Hill said the machine will greatly improve the management of wood dust in the shed and increase the health and safety of members working with timber.

“It’s very much appreciated by the Shed Management Committee and shed members,” Mr Hill said.

“This donation has allowed the committee to move forward to install an integrated dust collection manifold system into the shed linking five wood working machines together.

“This manifold system will collect the wood dust produced by those machines which will in turn provide for a cleaner safer working environment.”

Stephen Beeston from Sandvik Mining visited the Shed last week to inspect the integration of the dust management machine.

Mr Beeston said Sandvik Mining was pleased to be able to support the Copper City Men’s Shed and its project to improve the health and safety of those working in the shed.

Mr Hill said Sandvik has been a great supporter of the Men’s Shed.

Bush Fire Danger Period commences this weekend

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Bush Fire Danger Period in the Far West District, which includes the Cobar Shire, comes into force this Sunday.

Due to prevailing local conditions, a total of 38 Local Government Areas across NSW commenced their Bush Fire Danger Period a month early on September 1.

RFS Far West District Manager, Brad Lennon advises during the Bush Fire Danger Period, landowners and land managers are required to obtain a Fire Permit from their local RFS before lighting any fires, including hazard reduction burns.

“Before you light a fire, it’s critical that you check weather conditions are safe for burning and that you have the necessary precautions and equipment in place,” Mr Lennon warned.

“Never leave a fire unattended and if a fire does escape, it is essential to call Triple Zero (000) immediately so that emergency services can respond and minimise the damage.

Firearms charges A 39 year old Cobar man will appear in Cobar Local Court today to answer firearms charges.

The man was arrested and charged by police earlier this month following a tip off from the public.

Police from Central North Police District conducted a search of the man’s Green Street residence on September 13 where they located seven unregistered firearms as well as a number of firearm parts.

Police arrested the man and charged him with a number of offences including possess unregistered firearm, possess a prohibited weapon without permit, and not keep firearm safely.

He was granted conditional bail.

Council concerned about lost cash The State Government Budget last Tuesday has had a significant negative outcome for Cobar Shire Council with the removal of the Resources for Regions Funding.

In his general manager’s operation report to tomorrow’s Ordinary Council Meeting Peter Vlatko advised Cobar Shire has received more than $24 million in funding over the past three years from the Resources for Region program.

Mr Vlatko said just last year Cobar received over $12 million in funding from the program for nine projects including: the Louth Road Reservoir Asset Renewal ($4,031,426); Euabalong Pump Station upgrades ($1,016,051); Booberoi Road Bridge Replacement ($2,733,750); Round Hill Road Bridge Replacement ($2,733,750); Cobar Footpath Connector project ($1,130,662); Cobar’s Airport Masterplan ($101,250); Early Intervention Program Phase 2 ($117,000); the Great Cobar Museum – Exhibitions and objects display ($313,875); and $100,000 which was directed towards Youth Services Programs.

“Council will now join other Councils to lobby the NSW State Government to reinstate this grant funding as a matter of urgency,” Mr Vlatko said.

$10.1M from Hong Kong investor

Australian Gold and Copper (AGC) has received a $10.1 million investment from a Hong Kong investor, the Delin Mining Group Cooperation, to further their exploration efforts in the Cobar basin.

The investment will allow AGC to accelerate the exploration of its portfolio, including five drilling targets at the South Cobar Project.

AGC chairman David Richardson said in the current climate where the cost of capital is high, this investment represents exceptional value for all shareholders.

Delin’s chairman, Zhang Yong said they were excited about the strategic investment in AGC. “We look forward to supporting AGC to further the advancement of these gold projects, and to providing a bridge between the Australian mining industry and Southeast Asia in the future together with AGC,” Mr Yong said.

A maiden drill program to test the high priority Hilltop target is planned to commence on completion of the investment.

Intrepid Aussie adventurers invited to tell their African tales Cobar VIEW Club ladies are being immersed in the geography and culture of several overseas countries this year, with another ‘trip’ being presented by guest speakers Demi Smith and Brytt Moore at last week’s meeting.

Demi and Brytt held everyone’s attention with their lively commentary and amazing photographs as they related their recent African trip which included 25 days in a fully equipped safari truck with local tour guides and participants from seven different countries.

They travelled through Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, and they also attended the Netball World Cup in Cape Town.

They witnessed a questionable border control incident, battled a massive sandstorm, were sand bogged, experienced a truck break down and a massive taxi strike in Cape Town.

These two intrepid Aussies considered the whole trip amazing with highlights being the animals they encountered (some up close and personal); Rhino trekking on foot; the World Netball Cup; Cape Town’s atmosphere; and learning about the different landscape, cultures and ways of life of the people in the towns and villages they explored.

Members are reminded that October’s meeting is to be held at the Miners’ Memorial, with RSVPs required for catering.

Councillors will consider the need for a by-election at tomorrow night’s Ordinary Council Meeting following the resignation last month of Cr Peter Maxwell.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko advised under the Local Government Act Section 294, if there is a casual vacancy within 18 months before the next election (September 2024), the Minister of Local Government may, on application, order that the vacancy not be filled.

As a by-election would prove to be costly, it’s expected councillors will seek to make an application to the Minister to forego it.

“Cr Maxwell has been a councillor for 11 years and has made a significant contribution to Council and the Cobar Shire, we thank him for his passion and commitment,” Mr Vlatko said.

Hot days ahead

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a week of above average temperatures with the mercury set to hit a maximum of 38 degrees this public holiday Monday.

The long term average for this time of year is 27.2 degrees but this year (unusually) it’s warmed up quite a bit more.

(Traditionally the week before the opening of the pool season is a cool week but this expected hot weather might make this season’s first dip on Sunday a bit more pleasurable.)

Today the mercury is expected to rise to a predicted maximum of 30 degrees with a top of 29 expected tomorrow.

Friday will be sunny with a top temperature of 32 degrees is forecast.

It’s looking like being hot all long weekend with a predicted maximum of 34 on Saturday, the expected top for Sunday is 36 degrees before a very hot 38 degrees on Monday.

After a somewhat cooler day last Thursday (when it only topped at 22.7 degrees), the mercury has been rising each day with 24.5 the maximum recorded on Friday, 26.8 on Saturday and the top on Sunday was 28.3.

It jumped to 31.4 on Monday, which is almost 10 degrees warmer than the average for September.

Our nights also got progressively warmer with Monday night/Tuesday morning only dipping to a low of 16.6 degrees.

The warmer nights look set to stay with the Bureau predicting overnight minimums of 12 tomorrow and Friday with 15 the predicted low on Saturday, 17 on Sunday and 20 is the expected low overnight on Monday.

The Bureau recorded 0.4 mm of rain in their gauge up until 9am on Saturday which brought our total rainfall for the month to just 2.4mm for the month. (That’s well below our long term average rainfall for September of 25mm).

There’s a slight chance of a thunderstorm this morning that may add a little rain to the month’s total but, other than that, we’re in for a hot, dry week ahead.

One of our oldest buildings will soon be looking like new The Cobar Courthouse, one of Cobar’s magnificent old buildings, is currently undergoing a refurbishment.

According to a Department of Communities and Justice spokesperson, the maintenance project includes internal and external painting and associated repairs to woodwork, window and door frames, walls and eaves.

The carpet is also to be replaced.

The building work is being carried out by Ben Knight Constructions.

“The works are progressing well and are expected to be finished by mid-October.

“No disruption to normal service delivery at the courthouse is expected while the works are ongoing,” the spokesperson said.

Kay Stingemore, curator of the Great Cobar Museum, advises the construction of the Cobar Courthouse began in September 1885 and was completed by May 1887.

“Before this, according to The Town and Country Journal 28 February 1880, Cobar could not “boast of one proper government building”.

“The Sydney Morning Herald of 10 March 1881 stated that Cobar’s court was held “in a very queer place indeed”, an “ordinary wooden cottage”.

“The small room in which hearings were held was reported to be most uncomfortably close,” Mrs Stingemore said.

“It forms part of a continuous streetscape of attractive and historically significant buildings along the western side of Barton Street.”

President’s team comes out on top in ladies golf game The Ladies’ Golf President versus Captain Stableford on Sunday was taken out

by Narelle Kriz’s President’s team.

Kriz, along with Fay Hardwick, Marlene Wynd, Barb Barklimore, Karen Manns and Serena Fraser finished with a combined total of 191 points while Geraldine Francisco’s Captain’s team were close behind with 189 points.

Fraser was the individual winner on the day having 39 points with Daphne Cross (35) the runner-up followed by Marlene Wynd and Karen Manns on 34 points each.

Nearest the Pin winners on the 8th hole were Kriz and Brenda Fugar. The only C Grader playing on the day couldn’t quite stay on the fairway to collect a prize.

The scores were close in Saturday’s Stroke game.

Marlene Wynd beat Julie Livingston for first place after a countback when both finished with 73 net.

Karen Manns was next after another countback from Brenda Fugar when they each had 75 net.

Livingston won the A Grade best putter award with 26 putts, Barb Barklimore had 25 putts for the win in B Grade and Ann Dunn, with 32 putts, was the winner in C Grade.

Brenda Fugar survived a three-way countback in last Wednesday’s Par game to take the win from Marlene Wynd and Ann Dunn Narelle Kriz’s President’s team finished as the winners of the President’s versus Captain’s tournament on Sunday. The side was made up of Karen Manns, Serena after all posted +1.

Graeme Barton steps up to lead Junior League club Cobar Junior Rugby League has a new president after last week’s annual general meeting with Graeme Barton stepping up from the vice president’s role.

Outgoing president Genie McMullen did not seek re-election but was happy to take a back seat on the general committee.

Tarra Burke was returned as secretary, Christine Brown will continue in the roles of treasurer, public officer and canteen coordinator and Emma Barton was returned as registrar.

New faces joining the committee include Dean Brookman as vice president and Caitlan Ayoub has taken on the publicity officer’s role.

Joining Genie on the general committee are: Ambie McMullen, Simone Neyland, Haylee Prince, Bryce Moore, Megan Nicholson, Matt Nicholson, Riki Schaumkell, Molly Negfeldt, Anita Atuau and Bek Turton.

Plans were made for the 2024 season with a discussion around the club submitting an U14s League Tag side next year after four female players Rhylee Jeffery, Ella Oborn, Holly Watt and Audrey Josephson will be unable to play in the U13s competition next year.

The club recently received $4,000 from the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club from the ClubGrants program and plan to use that to offset the cost of registrations in 2024 after the Active Kids voucher has decreased to $50 (from $100).

The price for registrations will decrease to $50 so parents using their Active Kids vouchers will not have to pay anything extra to register.

The club also recently distributed $18,690 to reimburse parents who travelled to games in the 2023 season for their fuel costs.

The funding came from a Transport NSW Grant.

Graeme Barton was elected as the new president of the Cobar Junior Rugby League committee last week taking over the role from Genie McMullen. Emma Barton was returned as registrar along with Tarra Burke re-elected as secretary and Chris Brown as treasurer. Dean Brookman (absent) is the club’s new vice president.

Whopping margin

The Twilight Bowls winners, David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Allan Gardoll, won by a whopping margin of +31 on Friday night at the Golfie.

Multiple +4’s, +5’s and even a +6 winning end were clearly insurmountable odds for their opposition Narelle Kriz and Peta Zazoniuk.

The triples game on rink 10 was much closer with John ‘Shark’ Daly, Greg Clark and Bel Starr taking honours by +1 against Tony Polack, Karen Daly and Pat Polack.

In the social bowls tournament on Sunday Dean ‘Bogga’ McLeod, David Thomas and David Kershaw ran away to claim a +24 win and take bragging rights for the day over David ‘Ooze’ Knight, Michael Harvey and Brian Heap.

The other social pairs game between Doug Hudson and Allan Gardoll up against Tony Polack and Jason Mills was kick started with a +5 end win by Hudson/Gardoll.

It took their opposition six ends to gather their wits and bring the margin within one shot (still in favour of Hudson).

Then, adding insult to injury, Hudson scored a +4 end win and then there was nothing stopping them on their way to victory, apart from Polack ‘n’ Co’s five shot win towards the end of the match. Hudson and Gardoll finished with a +14 win.

Cobar hosts pop up race meeting by chance

Fine weather and a well prepared track greeted the “boutique” crowd of about 60 punters for Saturday’s Pop Up Picnic Races. The Cobar Miners Race Club were given short notice about hosting the transferred Come By Chance picnic meet (it was only confirmed on Wednesday morning). Club president Jarrod Marsden said it was a bit of a scramble trying to organise things at the last minute but said first and foremost they were pleased to be able to offer trainers, jockeys and horses the opportunity to still be able to compete.

Dubbo trainer Connie Greig and leading jockey Leandro Ribeiro teamed up to have a good day in the saddle including this win by Ribeiro on board the Greig-trained Benyatta in Race 3, the Dubbo City Toyota Kensington Open Picnic Sprint. Greig’s Belle O’Balle finished a close second with Bush Warrior back in third place. Greig won three of the six races on Saturday and Ribeiro also rode three winners for the day.
