Cobar community commemorates Queen Elizabeth II A local commemorative service for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was held at Drummond Park on Monday afternoon led by local Greg Martin.

Mr Martin said he thought it only fitting that the Cobar community have the opportunity to be able to pay their respects to the Queen.

Addressing the crowd of more than 100, Mr Martin, a royalist, said he had great admiration for Her Majesty who had reigned as Australia’s Head of State for 70 years.

“The Queen consulted with 16 Prime Ministers and 16 Governors-General served in her name. She was the patron of more than 20 Australian charities and associations,” he said.

“45 years ago I swore allegiance to serve Her Majesty as a member of the Australian Army Reserve and Ma’am, as our Commander in Chief, I salute you and thank you for your leadership.”

Mr Martin said he was proudly called upon to protect the Queen when she visited Australia on two occasions, at Bourke in 2000 and in Sydney in 1988 when he was part of the Special Operations Squad.

Local solicitor Geoffrey Langford, who recalls listening to the radio broadcast of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II’s father, King George VI in 1952 as a child, said he was honoured to have been able to speak at Cobar’s commemorative service for the Queen.

He recalls seeing the Royal couple with his parents at Dubbo Showground in 1954 and said it was “a most significant event for rural NSW and people came from all over the west, including a train load of children from Cobar”.

Mr Langford said he saw her on five occasions during her numerous visits to Australia.

Also speaking as part of Monday’s service,

were Cobar RSL Sub-Branch president Kain Neale (who had also sworn allegiance to Her Majesty as a former serving member of the Australian Army) and Cobar High School captains Todd Polack and Joey Neale who all acknowledged and thanked the Queen for her leadership and service.

Best. Two minutes silence was also observed as part of the service (as a double moment of reflection), which was a gesture called for by Buckingham Palace for all commemorative services for the Queen.

Members of the public were then invited to lay floral tributes to the Queen at the Cenotaph.

Among them were the Cobar Girl Guides, who were there to farewell a fellow Girl Guide.

CSA digs deep to help students

The CSA Mine recently made a donation to Cobar High School to help fund the school’s trip to Newcastle for students to participate in the Science & Engineering State Championships. As part of the excursion, the students were able to spend an extra day and gain trade experience by visiting a leading engineering company in the STEM field. It was a great opportunity for students to see what goes on first hand and hopefully created further interest in the area of engineering. One of the aims of the excursion was to increase students’ engagement in STEM, which CSA supports and is happy to promote to students as possible future careers. Upon their return from the excursion, Cobar High students Katie Nicholson, Kelsey Neve and Hayden Nicholson gave a presentation about their trip and their participation in the championships to members of CSA Management team (pictured above). ▪ Photo contributed

The wait is over!

The long wait is over and the Running On Empty Festival 2022 (ROEF2022) is finally here!

Visitors began arriving in Cobar over the weekend in readiness for the four day parade of magnificent machines which commences tomorrow.

Have you spotted the red Camero, an AC Cobra and the Chev station wagon?

Festival organiser John de Bruin said he’s expecting 700 visitors from nearly every state in Australia to arrive in Cobar this week.

“We’ve got 276 show cars coming from out of town, and that doesn’t include the locals and more from Parkes, Forbes, Orange, Dubbo and Bourke who are planning day trips on Saturday, so we should have more than 300 cars,” John said.

He said with the public holiday tomorrow, there’s been a small change to the Festival program and instead of a cruise drive past the schools, a cruise around town will be a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. The ROEF2022 fun kicks off tonight with a Welcome Night at the Museum. Entry is free and Ballz n All trio will be playing.

Police detain bikie gang members Approximately 35 motorcycle riders wearing outlawed Highway 61 MC colours were pulled over and questioned by police on Friday afternoon.

The group was detained in the main street by highway patrol and Cobar Police officers when they entered Cobar at approximately 3.20pm.

A number of traffic offences were detected and infringement notices issued to the riders.

The group moved on about half an hour later without incident.

Cobar Police Station is once again fully staffed The recent appointment of a new Police sergeant and another general duties officer to the Cobar Police Station means the station is once again fully staffed with seven officers.

Sergeant Warwick Laing and Constable Daisy Arthur both moved to Cobar last month to take up the two vacant positions.

In his policing career, Sergeant Laing has spent the past seven years at Inverell and prior

to that he was stationed at Newcastle, Walgett, Goodooga and Maroubra police stations.

He said he found working in the country very different to working the city.

“Out here everyone knows who you are and everyone knows who everyone is, which is a bit different to Sydney and Newcastle where you don’t know anyone and they don’t know you,” Sergeant Laing said.

For Constable Arthur, Cobar is her second

police posting.

She’s worked for the past two and a half years at Inverell and prior to that she’d travelled for seven years before deciding to join the NSW Police Force.

The couple met “on the job” at Inverell and recently transferred to Cobar together.

Constable Arthur said they had been looking for a change and had been considering a move to the western area for some time.

“We’d heard a lot of good things about Cobar from other officers,” she said.

When they were looking at transfers, they found the Sergeant’s position at Cobar was advertised.

“That was the first one I put in for and here we are!” Sergeant Laing said.

While the move to Cobar will mean they both will be at work more and will have less time off, Sergeant Laing said there are however a number of benefits involved in moving to a remote location, including getting a police house.

“Compared to where we have been before there are less problems here than a lot of other places,” which Sergeant Laing said was an another advantage in their move.

The pair admit they don’t really have a lot of personal interests outside their jobs.

“At the moment we’re just fitting in and relaxing,” Sergeant Laing said.

“Daisy used to play touch footy and a few of the blokes here are trying to get me to play golf.

“I haven’t played golf for a long time,” he said.

“We are still pretty much getting to know our way around and getting to know everyone,” Constable Arthur said.

Staysafe reviews road speed limits The Staysafe Committee, a NSW Parliament Joint Standing Committee that monitors, investigates and reports on road safety in NSW, undertook a review of speed limits earlier this month.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler, is a member of the Staysafe Committee.

“In 2018 I committed to seek a review of speed limits on our regional roads,” Mr Butler said.

As part of its role, the Committee looks at ways to reduce deaths and injuries, as well as the social and economic costs to the community of road accidents.

“A lot has changed in terms of car safety technology, driver training and safety devices on roads over the last few decades and this review was long overdue,” Mr Butler said.

“The evidence presented at the review tended to support the idea of raising the limits on good stretches of straight roads like the Barrier Highway where there is clear visibility for kilometres up ahead.”

Mr Butler said he will make further comments on the matter when the report is released.

SheepMaster sale success

The inaugural SheepMaster Eastern Australian Ram Sale was held on AuctionsPlus last Monday. A total of 56 rams were on offer from the three Eastern Australian Accredited Studs: Montarna SheepMaster Stud at Hamilton Vic, the Janaree SheepMaster Stud in Cobar and the Wild Oat SheepMaster Stud at Beckom NSW. The sale had a total clearance with an average of $2,923 with 20 successful bidders from NSW, Vic and SA. The top price ram was achieved by lot 41 from Wild Oat selling for $9,300. $5 billion fund to improve childcare

Local working parents and carers looking for help to ease the cost of living will be buoyed by the news that the NSW Parliament plans to introduce a $5 billion Childcare and Economic Opportunity Fund.

Treasurer Matt Kean said the early childhood education reforms are estimated to boost affordable childcare supply by up to 47,000 places when combined with changes to the Commonwealth Childcare Subsidy.

“This landmark investment will give our children the best start in life, support the parents who need it most and help women return to paid work when they want,” Mr Kean said.

“The NSW Childcare and Economic Opportunity Fund Bill 2022 will help give more people in our state the opportunity to choose both a career and a family by easing cost of living pressures.”

Over the next decade the NSW Government is spending $15.9 billion on childcare and early education, including: introducing a highquality universal pre-Kindergarten year for all NSW children in the year before school by 2030; providing affordable preschool; increasing participation of three year olds in preschool in long day care settings; increasing the number, quality and retention of early childhood educators and teachers; providing developmental checks in preschools (including rural areas) as part of the Brighter Beginnings initiative; building system stewardship capability and offering more tailored support and guidance to early childhood education and care service providers; and improving access to before and after-school care services.

Attempted B&E to a local business Cobar Police are appealing to anyone who may have information about two ‘would be’ thieves who attempted to gain entry to a main street business in the early hours of Monday morning.

Sergeant Warwick Laing reports a witness saw two unknown males on the roof of the Harvey Norman building at around 1.15am on Monday.

“The witness believes they may have been attempting to gain entry,” Sergeant Laing said.

“If anyone has any information regarding this matter, we’d like to hear from them.”

My Dream Vehicle The Cobar Arts Council has gotten into the Running On Empty Festival spirit by running a Student ROEF Art and Photography Competition.

The theme was ‘My Dream Vehicle’ with prizes awarded in multiple categories from preschool through to high school.

The winners were: Pre-School—1st Ngalii Preschool; 2nd Cobar Preschool and Indigenous winner Ngalii Preschool; Kinder to Yr2—1st William Skinner, 2nd Tate Stephens and Indigenous Ruby Pagett; Yr3 to Yr6—1st Talas Burke, 2nd Max Mitchell and Indigenous Ava Carter; Yr 7 to Yr 10—1st Tanna Grentell; Yr 11 & 12—1st and 2nd places Mimi Clark.

A Special Judges’ Prize was awarded to Sam McKervey.

Judges commented the creativity in all entries was evident.

“All have lovely elements in them, some being 3D,” the judges said.

“It was a tough job judging some of the ‘mad looking’ entries.

“We were impressed with the techniques used by some artists and a sense of humor is evident in some works.

“It was nice to see students experimenting with effects with some students ‘stepping out of the box’ to create their works.

“There are some budding artists in the Cobar community and we hope they keep creating.”

The works are currently on exhibition at the Railway Station.

Wild dog baiting program begins

The Western Local Land Services (Western LLS) has begun planning for a spring seasonal baiting program for wild dogs.

On-ground activities are expected to commence at the end of the month and carry on until the end of October, weather permitting.

Pest management groups have confirmed their ground baiting days so participating landholders are asked to contact their group chair or biosecurity to check their dates.

Aerial baiting is scheduled to commence mid October and run through to the end of the month.

1080 poison baits will be issued at the rate of application of 10 baits per kilometre.

The area covered will extend from Enngonia in the north-east, to Broken Hill in the west, near Pooncarie in the south-west and down to Mt Hope in the south-east.

Local biosecurity officers will be in touch with landholders with exact dates and flight paths.

Trying a new technique

The Cobar Shire Library’s monthly art and craft classes for adults offer locals the opportunity to learn different creative techniques and skills. The September class on Saturday at the library showed participants how to paint pour onto pots and canvases.

Double Demerits commence tonight Drivers are urged to take extra care on the roads from today, with double demerits coming into effect ahead of tomorrow’s public holiday, the National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty the Queen and school holidays commencing on Saturday.

Double demerits will apply from midnight tonight until midnight on Sunday and will apply for all speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.

Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary for Safety, Environment and Regulation Tara McCarthy reminded drivers not to be complacent throughout the period.

“Although this is a sombre occasion, there

is still likely to be more people out on the roads over the next few days and over the weekend with the school term ending on Friday, so it is important we all take extra care,” Ms McCarthy said.

“The last thing we want to see over this period is an increase in road trauma, which is why double-demerits will be in place like they would for any other public holiday to deter people from doing the wrong thing and putting lives at risk.”

Drivers are reminded the period includes a school day on Friday and additional penalties can apply for certain offences committed in school zones.

Masks gone on public transport

Warm days ahead

From today masks will no longer be mandatory on public transport in NSW. The NSW Government has removed the requirement for people to wear masks on public transport, including taxis and buses.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the move was a “common sense approach” and brings the rules in line for people travelling on buses or trains with those for planes and airport terminals.

NSW Health continues to recommend that people wear masks where they cannot physically distance from others, and in settings where there are vulnerable people and those who are at high risk of severe illness.

Mask wearing will remain mandatory at public hospitals, private health facilities and residential aged care facilities.

It’s looking like fine Festival weather for the week ahead with a pleasant 24 degrees predicted for Friday, 22 is the expected top on Saturday and Sunday will be a gorgeous 26 degrees according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

There is however a chance of some heavy rain today (up to 25mm) and a shower or two is also expected tomorrow.

There was some good rainfall recorded in the Cobar district last week with Cathy Francisco reporting they had 22mm in a 10 minute downfall at Carline in the north east of the shire last Thursday night. The Bureau reports we only had 13.2 mm in town for the week.

After the rain cleared we had a fine and sunny weekend with 20 degrees the reported top temperature on Saturday while it reached 21 on Sunday which made for a nice day at the Pop up Races.

NSW Rural Fire Service Prevention of Bush Fires The public is notified to comply with the under-mentioned requirements before the following classes of fire may be lit during the BUSHFIRE DANGER PERIOD From October 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 And other times declared by Council For the purposes of BURNING HOUSEHOLD WASTE, ROUTINE AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES, VEGETATION BURNS, BURNING OF FIRE BREAKS AND BURNING OTHER WASTE PRODUCTS, CLEARING ETC a) A permit must be first obtained b) Notice must be given to the adjoining landholders, Fire Control personnel and the permit issuing officer before the fire is lit c) At least one person must be in attendance at the fire during the whole time it is burning d) Conditions of permit must be observed A person must not light a fire in the open to cook, heat or prepare meal or to boil water or for any like purpose unless the fire is lit: a) In a permanently constructed fireplace within 2 metres of which the ground is clear of all combustible matter, or b) At a site within 3 metres of which the ground is clear of all combustible matter.

When fire permits are issued for vegetation burns, they are not to be considered to be approvals to clear land & are not designed to allow for the clearance of native vegetation, threatened species or areas subject to tree preservation orders contrary to the requirements of other laws, which govern their clearance.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to determine if any environmental approval is required and to obtain that approval.

On the days where TOTAL FIRE BANS are declared all current permits are suspended for the duration of such Total Fire Ban. MAXIMUM PENALITY FOR FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE REQUIREMENTS – $5,500 OR 12-MONTHS IMPRISONMENT

POSITIONS VACANT FULL TIME Council currently has multiple vacancies for hard-working, enthusiastic individuals with the physical fitness to undertake the manual tasks required of these roles in a safe and efficient manner.

Parks & Gardens Labourer - will assist with the construction and maintenance of irrigation systems, maintenance of town parks, sporting grounds and other public infrastructure, grave digging, and beautification throughout the township of Cobar.

Water & Sewer Labourer – will assist with maintaining and repairing water and sewer reticulation assets to ensure their availability for operational and community usage, which requires employees to participate in an on-call and call -out roster to respond to emergency works after hours.

Plant Operator – will assist the roads team with civil works throughout the shire and requires a minimum Class HR Licence and the willingness to camp out of town during the week as required.

Heavy Plant Mechanic – responsible for the efficient and timely completion of all servicing, fabrication, installation and repair of Council plant and equipment, both in the workshop and in the field.

Persistence pays off for lady golfer

After a few placings in the Ladies Golf competitions earlier in the week, persistence paid off for Barb Barklimore when she secured a win in Sunday’s Stableford.

Barklimore finished with 33 points with Jannine Wilkin second with 32 points followed by Marlene Wynd and Narelle Kriz, who both finished with 28.

Nearest the Pin winners were Julie Livingston, Jannine Wilkin and Glenda Peebles.

Narelle Kriz was the Stroke winner on Saturday with a score of 75 net with Jannine Wilkin the runner-up after a countback from Barb Barklimore. Each carded 82 net.

Marlene Wynd was 4th with 86 net.

The best on the greens was Wilkin with 24 putts.

The course proved a bit tricky on the weekend after the rain which was reflected in the scores on both days.

A small field of seven players contested last Wednesday’s Par game with Julie Livingston coming away with the win with a score of -2.

Barb Barklimore was next with -3 and Daphne Cross posted -5.

Livingston and Susan Goonrey were Nearest the Pin winners on the 3rd hole.

The annual Marie McManus Memorial Day was played on Saturday September 10 with a field of 12 braving the cold conditions to take part.

Robynne Morton won the beautiful crystal trophy donated by the McManus family with a score of 30 points.

She beat Barb Barklimore on a countback.

Narelle Kriz was third with 27 points followed by Brenda Fugar on 26.

The Nearest the Pin winners on the 11th hole were Kriz, Fugar and Michelle Deppeler.

Last Sunday’s Par game saw better playing conditions although the scores didn’t reflect that the match was played in welcome sunshine.

Michelle Deppeler was the winner on the day with –5 and has now decided not to sell her clubs and cart after her poor score from the previous day’s Stableford.

The runner-up on the same score was Narelle Kriz.

In third spot was Jannine Wilkin on –7 on a countback from Marlene Wynd who was relegated to 4th spot.

Closest to the flag on the 15th hole were Kriz, Wilkin and Sue Phillips.

Today is a Stableford game with the annual Langford Day Mixed Canadian on Saturday and a Stroke round on Sunday.

Full time whistle blown for the 2022 junior soccer season The Cobar Junior Soccer competition wrapped up on Saturday morning with grand final games followed by their end of season presentations.

In the Mids division, United finished as the competition winners after a hard-fought 5-3 grand final win over Liverpool.

The Liverpool side played with determination all game and gave it all they had but United were just too good on the day and went home with the win.

United’s goals were scored by Henry Geppert (2), Charlie Nicholson (2) and Jack Geppert (1).

Liverpool’s points came from Nixon Small (2) and Joshua Ho Wing (1).

In the other Mids game (which determined third and 4th placings) Rangers finished with a 5-2 win over Rovers.

Rangers’ goal scorers were Logan Fennamore (3) and Jeremiah McMillan (1) along with an own goal.

Both of Rovers’ goals were netted by Joseph Theakston.

In the Seniors competition, the grand final game was like the other games throughout the season, a close one, with just one goal the final difference.

Isaac Theakston scored four goals for Spurs to help them to their 4-3 win over Rangers.

Rangers’ three goals came from the boot of Jade Buckman.

For the final games of the Minis division, the teams played a series of Round Robin games.

No scores were recorded as the games were all about having fun.

End of season presentations followed the Seniors game.

The Golden Boot Awards were presented to the highest goal scorers in each grade: Minis—Logan MacKenzie (48 goals); Mids— Henry Geppert (24) and Seniors—Jacob Theakston and Jeremy Theakston, who tied with 18 goals each.

Best & Fairest, Team Spirit and Most Improved awards were handed out in each team.

A knock-out round was played last night in A Grade between RSL and Empire Barflies.

The winner of that game will play Golfie Dartaholics in the A Grade grand final.

Golfie Spearchuckers will meet Empire Pirates tonight with the winner of that game to take on Golfie Gophers in the B Grade grand final.

The grand final games are scheduled to be played in a fortnight’s time (after the school holidays).

Owners, trainers, jockeys and others welcome pop up event A very excited young jockey was Hollie Hull when she rode her career first winning double, on Sunday, at Cobar’s Pop Up Races event.

Hollie is apprenticed to trainer Clint Lundholm and both her winners, Sin City Belle and Mega Celebration, are from the Lundholm stable at Dubbo.

Sin City Belle ($3.60) led the field in the 1,000 metres Sullivans Mining and Industrial Maiden Plate and held on to beat the heavily supported Queensland trained Hardness (Steven Galvin, $1.70 favourite) by a length with Sallista (Ashleigh Stanley, $3) third.

Mega Celebration ($4) raced midfield and, although travelling wide, was ridden out nicely by Hull to win the 1,200 metres Nutrien Russell Class 1 Handicap from Linden Tree

(Stanley, $7) and Individualist (Jake Barrett, $2.60).

Dubbo trainer Connie Greig continued her great run of success at Cobar and other western area meetings when landing a double with Brooklyn Star and Gossip.

Barrett gained a lovely run through the pack on Brooklyn Star ($2.90) to account for Gunnerside ($6) and Lenroy (Zara Castellaz-Faico, $4.40) in the 1,000 metres Cynend Building & Construction Benchmark 50 Handicap.

The favourite Kooky Kangaroo ($2.80) lost its rider (Steven Galvin) when the saddle slipped mid race.

Galvin, from Queensland, had stitches to a laceration but appeared to have escaped serious injury.

Dubbo-based apprentice Jake Barrett pro-

duced another outstanding ride when coming from last on Gossip ($2.20 favourite) to win the 1,375 metres DJW & Wells Ventilation Benchmark 50 Handicap from Cosmic King (Chelsea Ings, $7) and Get Up Alby (Stanley, $8).

Michael Mulholland provided the other leg of a Barrett treble when Sassy Diamond ($3.60) tracked the duelling leaders then raced to a four lengths win over Cubic (Ings, $2.70) and Leopardwood (Hull, $1.80 fav.) in the 1,370 metres WesTrac Maiden Plate.

Completing a clean sweep by apprentice jockeys and Dubbo based trainers, the Mulholland-trained Golden Eclipse, ridden by Ashleigh Stanley from Bathurst, won the 1,700 metres Broughton Field Services Benchmark 50 Handicap.

Backing up from an unplaced run at Dubbo on Thursday, Golden Eclipse ($2.20) raced in a handy position before winning from Merdeka (Barrett, $1.80 fav.) and Quick Spin (Ken Dunbar, $5).

A large number of race meetings have been abandoned in the region due to rain affected tracks and at very short notice Cobar Miners Race Club organised and staged the meeting on Sunday for the overall good of racing.

Senior cricket line up is unchanged

The line-up in the Cobar & District Senior Cricket Association committee is unchanged from last year following the club’s recent annual general meeting.

Jake Harbison was unanimously returned as president along with Alec Fraser as vice president.

Nicola Harbison was uncontested for the secretary’s position and Rhys Lloyd was popularly returned to the treasurer’s role.

Jade Buckman retained the publicity officer’s job.

Three teams have nominated for the 40 Overs competition, Empire, Nymagee and Golf Club, which kicks off mid October.

Davies however was a marked man, as was Cobar’s Hooker Tom Plater, and while both managed numerous line breaks throughout the match, they were heavily marked and had no room to move.

Throughout the season Cobar has always been able to rely on their big, mobile forwards and, with nine minutes left on the clock, Gerald Mackey forced his way over to score for the Roosters which shifted the momentum in Cobar’s favour.

The Panthers scrambled as the Roosters took control and, with fatigue setting in, a penalty in Cobar’s favour close to the try line gave Atuau the opportunity he’d been looking for.

Atuau scored and time had run out for the Panthers as the full time siren sounded as Plater took his last kicking attempt at goal.

It was the only one he missed all game, but the Roosters were still able to claim a 28-26 victory.

Cobar played what was probably their best game of the season with all players contributing something to the win.

Atuau and co-captain Plater lead their side masterfully.

They directed the Roosters play and kept their cool throughout, particularly in the final tense and gripping minutes of the game.

Hillam was another standout for the Roosters scoring the other “try of the match”.

Hillam was also one of the game’s top tacklers.

Davies created excitement each time he got the ball and was, as always, outstanding in cover defence.

Ben Simon, playing in the forwards, made plenty of yards in attack and was another top tackler in Saturday’s game.

Cobar’s defensive workhorses, David Watson, Jed Noonan and Tristan Everett, played their trademark big games for the Roosters.

Zane Taylor, Nathan McAndrew, Sione Fakahua and Veni Taumololo all played solid games with Neyland, Ben Griffiths and Jack Brown also making their own contributions to Cobar’s win.

Their bench, Marty Turton, Ted Smith, George Manu and Reynold Mugugia, are also to be commended for their contributions to the side throughout the season.

The Gilgandra side were gracious in defeat and acknowledged at the after match presentations that Cobar had been “the best side in the competition” for the past two seasons.

Cobar’s fans, who came from far and wide to watch Saturday’s grand final, included Cobar Old Boys, COHOE Roosters and some who had played in the Roosters last grand final win at Dubbo, 16 years ago in Group 11.

It was the First Grade Roosters first premiership since they joined the Castlereagh competition in 2018.

The team was given a rousing welcome (which included a police escort) on their return to the Golfie on Saturday night.

Celebrations are reported to be continuing.

Seven players contested last Wednesday's Men’s Golf Stableford competition.

Veteran Max Phillips finished as the winner with 33 points, closely followed by another veteran, Piers Brown, on 32 stableford points.

John Collins, in third place, made it a clean sweep for the Vets after he beat Scott Meadows on a countback when both finished with 30 stableford points.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Phillips on the 3rd hole and Greg Clark on the 11th hole.

The very well manicured bowling greens at the Golfie were running hot on Sunday thanks to Stewart Simpson’s care and attention.

The greens were so good that even with the unpredictable gusts of wind, normally wayward bowls found their mark time and time again!

In the Singles Championship game between Barry Bargwanna and Jim Goonrey, the scores were even for the first five ends and only a single point separated the rivals for the next seven ends! The outstanding bowling by both was a joy to watch.

Bargwanna eventually ended the duel with a +7 win which takes him through to the Singles Championship semi final where he and Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond. The winner will then earn the right to challenge Gerard Livingston in the final.

The winners of Sunday’s social bowls tournament were the “out of towners” triples team of Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond (Hermidale), Peter Scott (Windang) and Glen Moses (Kiama) who finished with a mighty +25 score against locals John ‘Shark’ Daly, Karen Daly and first time bowler Kelly Beard.

A photo finish was called for on the last end as Kelly held shot and second wood!

The day’s runners-up were the pairs team of Don Roberts and Randall Hall who had a + 16 win over Glen ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe and Helen Boddy.

The NSW Veterans Golf Association Sandgreen Championships were played as a FourBall-Best-Ball game at Narromine on the weekend. Garry Wilkin teamed up with Peter Hutchinson from Narromine to run second in the A Grade Scratch event going down by two shots.

Langford Day is on this Saturday and will be played as a Mixed Canadian event.

Cobar Junior Rugby League’s annual general meeting last Friday night was well attended with Genie McMullen re-elected as the club’s president.

Graham Barton will return as the club’s vice president and Chris Brown was re-elected to the treasurer’s role.

Also re-elected were Emma Brown as the club’s registrar while Tarra Burke has taken on the secretary’s role.

Amanda Hyland, Haylee Prince, Erika Muldoon, Dean Brookman, Ambie McMullen, Chris Deighton, Simone Knight, Leighton Trudgett, Stacey Trudgett, Jayme Francisco, Narelle Green and Abby Fairfull were elected to the general committee to help with the running of the 2023 season.

The match had all of the hallmarks of a great grand final with both sides fully committed to winning, each had large, vocal crowds behind them, the lead changed several times throughout and the Roosters only snatched the win from the Panthers in the final minute.

The Panthers opened the scoring early in Saturday’s tough, physical grand final game.

It wasn’t until midway through the first half that Cobar responded with Atuau pushing over to score the Roosters first points next to the posts.

Cobar then took the lead soon after in sensational fashion when a beautifully weighted kick from the far wing by Jimmy Neyland was plucked out of the air by high flying Rooster centre, Tim Hillam, who put the ball down to score.

Tom Plater’s kicking game was on song and his second conversion put the Roosters in front at 12-6.

However the lead was to only be short-lived as the Panthers hit back with a converted try to lock up the scores at 12-all just before half time.

Soon after the re-start, Plater put the Roosters in front with a converted try before the Panthers then grabbed the game by the throat.

Gilgandra ran in three consecutive tries and, by midway through the second half, they had pushed their lead out to 26-18.
