After finishing third in the regular season of the 2022 Christie & Hood Castlereagh Rugby League competition, the Cobar Roosters First Grade side had to take the long road to get to the grand final, but they’ve showed their fighting spirit and won their way into the ‘Big Dance’ this Saturday where they will take on the Gilgandra Panthers for the 2022 Premiership. It’s the Roosters fifth season in the Castlereagh competition and a win on Saturday will go some way to making amends for not winning last year’s premiership which was cancelled due to COVID restrictions. Schools to close next week for public holiday Cobar’s schools and child care centres will be closed next Thursday as part of Australia’s National Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced next Thursday will be a public holiday for all Australians with a National Memorial Service to be held in Canberra.

Cobar High School, St John’s School, Cobar Preschool, Cobar Out Of School Hours (COOSH) and the Kubby House Child Care Centre have all begun notifying parents and carers that the schools and centres will be closed that day.

(As of yesterday afternoon, Cobar Public School had not yet heard from the Department of Education as to what was happening.)

NSW Minister for Employee Relations Damien Tudehope said the public holiday has been declared under section 5 of the Public Holidays Act 2010.

Mr Tudehope advised shops and retailers can trade as they normally would on other public holidays such as Australia Day or New Year’s Day. This additional public holiday will not be a “restricted trading day” (such as Good Friday or Anzac Day) under the Retail Trading Act 2008.

For banks and other financial institutions it will be a “bank close day” under the Retail Trading Act 2008.

For employers and employees, the provisions of the Fair Work Act 2009 that deal with working on public holidays will apply.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has instructed NSW Health to encourage all local health districts to retain as much of their planned elective surgery on that day as possible, subject to staff availability.

Members of the public are invited to observe one minute of silence at 11am on the National Day of Mourning to honour the Queen’s life.

While there is no formal requirement to suspend events on the National Day of Mourning (the decision is up to the organiser), the declaration of a public holiday has thrown a spanner in the works for next week’s Running On Empty Festival.

Organiser John de Bruin said the cocktail night will still go ahead on Thursday but the cruise planned to the schools for that day has been modified.

Cobar Shire Council will have a condolence book at the Council Chambers for any residents who may wish to leave messages for the Royal Family.

More than a dozen local sporting clubs and community groups have benefited from this year’s Cobar Bowling & Golf Club’s ClubsGRANTS program with a total of $71,406.31 handed out in cash and in-kind donations this year. Great family night out

Visitors keep on coming to Cobar

It’s looking like we’ll reach a record this year for tourism visitor numbers with figures on track to beat our previous best years.

Cobar Shire Council’s tourism manager Demi Smith reported the latest visitor statistics to last week’s Tourism Advisory Committee meeting saying we’ve already had over 19,000 visitors this year.

“It’s looking like we will beat previous good years where we’ve had 20,000 to 22,000 visitors per year,” Demi said.

August has been Cobar’s busiest month this year with 3,757 visitors calling into the Visitor Information Centre and 1,316 passing through the museum.

The visitor figures are also slightly up on July’s total of 3,654 for the month.

Demi expects September and October should also be busy months with lots of visitors expected to attend the Running On Empty Festival next week and the combined Grey Mardi Gras/Festival of the Miner’s Ghost/ Yabbies Reunion next month.

The Great Cobar Museum has also been welcoming an increased number of visitors (and bringing in considerable income).

“We’ve had fantastic numbers coming through the museum and we’re still getting lots of favourable comments about how great the building looks since the refurbishment,” Demi said.

The museum’s Stage 2 and Stage 3 refurbishment projects to build a new coach house and underground mining exhibition are expected to attract even more visitors.

Locals take part in World Suicide Prevention Day Walk Cobar Parkrun welcomed a few extra participants on Saturday morning with the weekly event being combined with Cobar Mental Health and Wellness Hub’s World Suicide Prevention Day Walk.

Cobar’s Wellness Coordinator Wendy Liu said the event, which was supported on Saturday by the Generocity Church and Interrelate, is held to remember those we’ve lost to sui-

cide, and to also raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.

Participants could choose to walk to remember a loved one, as a personal tribute for a friend or family member, or to show their support for Australians experiencing emotional distress or mental illness.

“Through connection, compassion and hope, we will unite to raise awareness, overcome

stigma and commit to preventing further deaths by suicide. The event is an opportunity to mingle and ensure that no one has to face their darkest moments alone,” Wendy said.

A free breakfast and coffee was provided for participants at the end of the walk.

Police chase down L-plater

A 17-year old Cobar L-plate driver is one of 37 people who were charged with drink/ drug diving offences during a state-wide police traffic operation over the weekend.

As Part of Operation Fume, a Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officer attempted to stop a vehicle in Marshall Street at around 3am on Sunday.

The driver had come to the attention of the officer due to his manner of driving.

The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit commenced. A short time later the vehicle was located at the intersection of Leah and Brough streets where the 17 year old male driver was arrested.

He allegedly returned a roadside breath test and was taken to Cobar Police Station for a secondary breath analysis test which allegedly returned a reading of 0.133.

The driver was charged with police pursuit, driving dangerously, mid range PCA and being an unaccompanied Learner driver.

His licence was suspended and he is to appear at Cobar Local Court later this month.

Break and enters Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen two male offenders in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Detective Acting Inspector Matt Clarke said “it’s highly likely” the two incidents that occurred in Cobar between 4.15am and 4.32am were committed by the same two offenders.

Alarms were triggered at both business premises in Barton Street and Hartman Street when the offenders (wearing face coverings) forced their way into each premises.

Offices were ransacked and damage was caused at both premises.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Cobar Police or CrimeStoppers.

Pop Up races on this Sunday The Cobar Miners Race Club will hold a ‘Pop Up’ race meeting this Sunday at Dalton Park Horse Sports Complex.

Club president Jarrod Marsden said he received a phone call on Monday morning from Racing NSW offering them the ‘Pop Up’ meeting.

“So much racing has been lost due to wet weather around western NSW and many trainers have been missing out on racing opportunities,” Marsden told The Cobar Weekly.

“Most of the ‘Pop Up’ meetings have been held on the turf at places like Dubbo and not on the dirt tracks.”

Marsden said as he’d been quite vocal in his support for more dirt track meetings (which would benefit trainers like local Wayne ‘Wap’ Prisk), and so when Racing NSW offered Cobar the meeting at short notice, he thought he’d better say yes and then work out the logistics later.

“Initially they offered us this Saturday but we couldn’t get any jockeys and so it was agreed we could move to Sunday,” he said.

Marsden said the move to Sunday is looking like it will work better with rain predicted for later this week and moving it back a day will give the track three or four days to dry out.

Sunday will also be a better day to attract racegoers as Saturday’s sporting schedule is already jam-packed with the Cobar Roosters playing their grand final in Gilgandra, and the Cobar Junior Soccer Club and Cobar Netball Association both holding their end of season presentations.

Marsden said the grounds were mowed on the weekend, the vet and barrier attendants are sorted, and they just have a few more details to sort out.

“We’re looking good,” he said.

The bowls rinks at the Golfie were busy on Sunday with Pairs and Singles Championship games being contested along with social bowls.

The “Roberts twins” (aka father and son, Don Roberts and Kyle Roberts) reigned supreme yet again dominating their Pairs Championship game against Jim Goonrey and sonin-law Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod.

The Roberts’ +16 win takes them through to the finals.

By the 16th end in the Singles Championship match between Gerard Livingston and John ‘Shark’ Daly there was only a two points difference.

The legendary Livingston then romped home to win by +14 by the 31st end.

Livingston now goes through to the Singles finals.

In the A Grade social pairs game, Bian Smith and Karen Daly out-played Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Allan Gardoll in what was a great game, there was barely one or two points in it up to the 9th end.

Both Skippers, Smith’s and Skeet’s strategically placed bowls often found their mark upsetting each other’s lead points!

Smith and Daly eventually won the day with +11.

In the B Grade social pairs match, David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Shane Carter were pretty much never in doubt against Barry Bargwanna and Glenn ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe.

They finished as the overall runners-up with +8.

Meanwhile in the C Grade social pairs game, Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Peta Zazoniuk won a thriller of a match over Randall Hall and John Claus.

There was barely a single point the difference throughout play with Duck and Zazoniuk eventually claiming a +3 win.

The George The Giraffe award this week was not a hotly contested event with Clausy the hands-down winner. After not being content with his own game, he attempted to take shot on the adjoining green!

Lawrence and Fraser win Bill Bartlett’s trophy

Despite the poor weather conditions on Saturday 25 players fronted the starter for the Bill Bartlett Memorial Four-Ball-BestBall Stableford in the Men’s Golf competition.

The winners were Men’s Golf Captain Alec Fraser and Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence who finished with a combined score of 42 stableford points.

Garry Wilkin and Jay Egan were second on 41 stableford points, after beating Mark Cummins and Greg Clark on a countback.

Jade Buckman and Brandt Pattison finished in 4th place with 40 stableford points.

Lawrence won the individual competition with 38 points, one shot in front of Cummins on 37 points.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Jason Hampel on the 3rd hole, Steve Manns on the 7th and Bill Fugar on the 8th and 15th holes.

A field of 11 golfers contested Sunday’s Stableford competition and they found the going tough.

Mark Fraser was the winner on the day with 35 stableford points.

He was two shots clear of Max Phillips and Garry Wilkin, who both finished with 33 stableford points.

Visitor Max Cochran claimed 4th place with 32 points.

Nearest to the Pins prizes were won by Bill Fugar on the 3rd hole, Cochran on the 7th, Wilkin on the 8th and Peter Lawrence on the 15th hole.

Individual Stablefords for both Saturday and Sunday are on the Men’s Golf program for this weekend.

CATS celebrate one of their most successful seasons

In the Juniors, Claire Cousins improved her time by three minutes over her three events; Skylar Fairfull shaved two minutes off her time this season; Harry Cousins competed in two events with 53 mins his fastest time; and Axel Fairfull competed in four events with his best short course time 36.04 and also three long course events with his best time of 1.07.16 recorded in April 2022.

The season’s Most Improved competitor was Tom Summerhayes who had an overall improvement of four minutes with Isaac Theakston finished this season with a sub 36 minutes time improving on his 39 from last season.

Findlay Robinson set two records over the season including the long course record of 1.02.50 and the short course record 33.27 to be the top performing Male competitor of the Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) president Greg McKervey with two of the season.

Isaac Theakston was consistently in the top 2021/2022 season prize winners, Axel Fairfull and Thomas Summerhayes, last two finishers this season and competed in all Wednesday night at the club’s presentations at the Golfie. ▪ Photo contributed but one event. He had a best short course time this season of 35.54.

Of the female competitors this season, Hannah Young recorded the best female times in the two events she competed in this season which included a course record in the long course of 1.10.53 and also a short course record of 39.33.

The club’s annual general meeting followed the presentations with McKervey returned as president and Zach Finn as vice president.

Also returned to his treasurer’s role was Chris Powell while McKervey has taken over the secretary’s role from Zoë Egan.

Abby and Axel Fairfull, Bianka Jacobson and Thomas Summerhayes were elected to the general committee.

Junior League wraps up a great season of footy for 2022 The Cobar Junior Rugby League Club wrapped up a great season of footy for 2022 with presentations held at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Sunday afternoon.

Divas and Nymagee Magpies celebrate grand final wins The Divas and Nymagee Magpies celebrated grand final wins in the Cobar Senior Netball competition last Tuesday night.

Both sides finished as comfortable winners of their respective games with Divas beating Pumpettes 47-33 in A Grade while Nymagee Magpies outplayed Real Steel to win their B Grade match 46-23.

The Divas got off to a flying start in A Grade to have a 10 goal lead at the first break thanks to sensational shooting by Lauren Urquhart and Jennifer Shepherd.

Both shooters continued to shoot with high accuracy throughout the match.

Divas had both ends of the court covered with former Cobar Blues representatives, Amie Hill and Demi Smith, holding up the defence end.

The pair read the game well to constantly intercept passes and their well coordinated, synchronized defence limited the Pumpettes’ shooters opportunities.

Divas were also well served by their ability to make more efficient use of the ball while Pumpettes constantly struggled throughout the match to move the ball down the court to their shooters.

The Pumpettes however continued to put up

a fight throughout the game.

A brilliant re-start in the fourth quarter, where Pumpettes scored the first four consecutive points, demonstrated they were not yet ready to concede, and raised the hopes of the crowd that it would be a close finish.

Divas however quickly recovered from the “blip” and bounced back to once again take control of the match to finish with a 14 point win.

Pumpettes’ Goal Attack, Neve Carter, deservedly earned the A Grade Player of the Grand Final award for her tenacity and unwavering commitment in both attack and defence throughout the game.

In the B Grade game that proceeded the A Grade match, Real Steel had the better start when they scored easy first points after being awarded a penalty in the ring.

A early period of frenzied, hurried play then ensued, which saw the centre court continuously congested with players, before the Nymagee Magpies settled down and got themselves into a smooth playing rhythm.

They finished the first quarter 10 points in front at 16-6.

Despite constantly making changes throughout the match to make sure all nine players got plenty of court time, the Magpies’ game plan didn’t deviate and by half time, they had extended their lead to 12 points, with the score at 23-11.

Real Steel also made constant position changes throughout the match to make sure their two subs also got a run.

They also made positional changes on court in an effort to strengthen their defence and shut down Magpies’ shooters, Mollie Harley and Kate Taylor, who were on point all game.

Harley barely missed a shot under the ring while Taylor kept sinking them from long range. A win will also please the club’s league of dedicated fans, many of whom have been at every game to support them.

Roosters’ grand final history

The Cobar Roosters First Grade last played a grand final game in 2016 in the Barwon Darling Group Premiership and were beaten by Walgett.

Their last grand final win was in 2006 in Group 11 under Coach Damien Connor. After the game went into extra time, the Roosters eventually finished as 25-22 victors over the Wellington Cowboys.

It was the 4th win for the Cobar club in Group 11 after playing 19 seasons. (They went on to play another nine seasons in Group 11 before moving to the Barwon Darling competition in 2016.)

The Roosters won successive Group 11 premierships in 1997 and 1998 under Coach Scott Meini beating the Parkes Spacemen both times, 42-10 and 39-14 respectively.

The Cobar First Graders also tasted victory in 1993 when they beat the Wellington Cowboys 18-16, in a grand final thriller.

They had to wait 20 years for that grand final celebration as their previous win had been in 1978 in Group 15 when they beat Goodooga.

Cobar was the most successful club in Group 15 with a total of 16 wins in their 39 seasons of competition from 1946 through to 1984.
