WesTrac brings the big rigs

Man dies in three vehicle crash

A Broken Hill man died as the result of a three vehicle accident on the Barrier Highway near Canbelego on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident, about 50km east of Cobar, at around 8.40pm on Monday.

They had received reports that a Holden Colorado ute, a Jeep Cherokee 4WD and a mine road train, carrying copper concentrate, had collided.

Officers attached to Central North Police District have been advised the utility and road train were headed eastbound and the 4WD was travelling westbound, when the crash occurred in the eastbound lane.

The road train subsequently left the roadway, crashed into a culvert and rolled.

Police arrived to find the driver of the Holden Colorado ute, believed to be a 41year-old Broken Hill man, had died at the scene.

A front-seat passenger in the ute, a 33-yearold woman, suffered broken ribs, and a sixyear-old child, who was in the back seat, were taken to Cobar District Hospital.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, a 60-yearold man from Chipping Norton, and the truck driver, a 65-year-old man from Dubbo, escaped injury and were taken to Cobar District Hospital for mandatory testing.

Police will allege the Jeep Cherokee driver refused to be tested and was taken to Cobar Police Station.

Crash investigators from Tamworth were called to the scene. Investigations are continuing.

Up until 12.30pm yesterday the Barrier Highway was closed in both directions at Canbelego with traffic diversions in place via Nymagee and Hermidale as the crash site was cleared.

Council welcomes a new Director of Infrastructure Services Charlie Taveira has joined the team at Cobar Shire Council as their new Director of Infrastructure Services.

Having worked in Victoria for more than 30 years, moving interstate was something Mr Taveira and his family had been considering for some time.

It was the hard lockdowns in Victoria during

the pandemic that prompted Mr Taveira to finally make the move.

“We have always gravitated towards regional country towns. We just find metros are different, the people are different. I love country folk, their passion, their spirit,” he said.

Mr Taveira sees the move to Cobar as a step up in his career progression.

He’s had 27 years experience in Local Government and also worked for almost five years in the private sector on a number of major infrastructure projects, all in Victoria.

He has formal qualifications in Municipal and Civil Engineering and also a Post Graduate in Business Administration.

“I’ve worked for rural councils and I’ve worked for interface councils—where you’ve got a bit of metro and you’ve got a bit of urbanization and little a bit of rural/country all in one—and also metro councils,” he said.

While working in a cross section of different councils has presented him with a number of different challenges, he said it’s also given him a broad range of experience and skills.

“I’m hoping to bring that all together and see what we can do here to improve things,” Mr Taveira said.

“I’ve got this mantra that I want to leave things in a better place than where I started.”

So far he’s found Cobar to be unique.

“Previously the largest council I’ve worked for was 1,300km² while this is 44,000, so that presents another challenge but also some really good opportunities,” he said.

“The road network is enormous.”

He believes new technology may be used to help streamline some of council’s current processes.

Having been at council for less than a week, Mr Taveira said he’s still settling in and getting his head around all that his new role entails, in particular all the infrastructure projects he will be working on with other council staff.

Last week Mr Taveira was also briefed on the water reserves project and is hoping to get up to speed on more of council’s infrastructure projects throughout this coming week.

He’s also keen to get out and meet people— on Saturday he took part in Parkrun, and then headed to the Cobar Races to socialize.

In his spare time he likes to run, go bushwalking, and “just get outdoors”.

“I like to keep healthy and fit, mainly because of the number of kids we have,” he said.

Mr Taveira has 10 children aging from 20 years down to 18 months and, for education purposes (one son is currently in the middle of Year 12), the family will be staying in Melbourne for a while.

“I miss my family—at some stage we’re hoping to move the family here,” he said.

In his new role with Cobar Shire he aims to ensure there is better communication with the community and to better promote all the good things that council is doing.

PUBLIC MEETING DRAFT ANNUAL OPERATING PLAN, REVENUE POLICY, FEES AND CHARGES AND BUDGET Council has placed its draft annual operational plan, revenue policy, schedule of fees and charges and budget on public exhibition.

A public meeting will be held on Wednesday June 15 at 6pm for persons wishing to meet with Council and staff to discuss the documents and lodge feedback if they wish. The meeting will be held in the Council Chamber.

Cobar Swimming Pool Design and Viability Report on public display for community feedback Cobar Shire Council is currently working with Facility Design Group to create a Masterplan and Business Case for the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool. This project has been proudly funded by the New South Wales State Government.

Council and Facility Design Group undertook a series of community consultation sessions in February 2022 in order to support the preparation of the Business Case and Masterplan.

Cobar Shire Council has received the Design and Viability Report in response to the project brief and in consideration of the community consultation sessions. Two concept options have been prepared for consideration.

1. The first option addresses the core issues with the entry, kiosk, amenities, and staff facilities.

2. The second option is a potential stage 2 which could include the addition of an indoor multipurpose pool to replace the current program pool.

Council advises the community that its preferred option is option 1 for consideration.

The Design and Viability report is on public display and available for community feedback. The report and plans can be accessed via Council’s website www.cobar.nsw.gov.au/council/have-your-say or from Council Administration Office at 36 Linsley Street.

All feedback must be submitted in writing via emailing mail@cobar.nsw.gov.au or post to PO Box 223, Cobar, NSW, 2835.

Local young woman nominated for business leader award

Young local business owner, Bree Martin, from Envy Beauty, has been nominated for the Western NSW 2022 Business Awards, delivered by Business NSW. The awards recognise growth and entrepreneurship and also celebrate business success across the Central West, Orana, and Far West regions.

Bree has been nominated in the Outstanding Young Business Leader category which recognises an inspirational business leader aged 35 or under who has demonstrated a commitment to their workplace, industry and the community through leadership.

At just 17 years of age, Bree may possibly be the youngest entrant in the category this year.

Bree said it’s definitely been a challenge setting up and running her own business, especially since she’s still studying fulltime to complete Year 12 at Cobar High School.

Then if you throw in all the extra hours she’s also spent on working towards her Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy through TAFE NSW, Bree is one very busy young lady.

It’s her passion for ensuring her clients have the best quality skin and look their best that drives her.

In her fledgling business, she does everything herself—from providing a range of beauty services and undergoing further training, to creating a website and managing her social media.

She also created and designed her own studio space.

“Being so young and running my own business in such a small community comes with some ups but also downs,” Bree said.

“Luckily for me, I rarely have customers unhappy with their treatments, but when I do, I try and resolve it as quickly as possible,” Bree said.

“Another challenge I have faced as a young business woman is trying to establish myself in an already competitive market.

“As is the nature of fly-in-fly-out mining communities, most residents choose to travel away to more populated regional cities for personalised services.

“The challenge has dually been to find my place among more established businesses by offering a range of beauty services at a competitive price point, in addition to changing mindsets that these services can be found locally at the same quality,” Bree said.

“I believe I have achieved this first through good word-of-mouth and customer feedback, and by thoroughly researching my client base to develop tailored marketing strategies to help promote my business.”

For someone so young, Bree is definitely not naïve and has well and truly done her research into running a small business.

“Small businesses face huge obstacles in today’s society, particularly given the uncertain economic climate, and I believe being open to understanding my clientele’s needs and how they want their services delivered, has helped me become more adaptable and able to meet the challenges of the marketplace,” she said.

The winners of the Western NSW 2022 Business Awards will be announced next month at a gala dinner in Dubbo.

Big race meeting

Cobar Miners Race Club president Jarrod Marsden was thrilled to welcome a big crowd (estimated to be about 2,000) for the club’s Autumn race meeting on Saturday.

After a few days of rain leading up to the event, the sun shone on Saturday for what Mr Marsden believes “was undoubtedly the best Cobar races ever”.

“It was the biggest crowd anyone can remember and the biggest race fields anyone can remember,” Mr Marsden said.

He said the betting turnover was up around the $30k mark and a bonus was that “most of the bookies lost on the day”.

Mr Marsden said it was great to see Dubbo trainer, Connie Greig, win her 4th WesTrac Cobar Cup and jockey Clayton Gallagher ride three winners on the six race program.

This year’s Fashions on the Field competition attracted a high quality field of entrants with judges Seigrid Peters, Tom Shanahan and Jade Dillon having their work cut out for them choosing the winners.

In the Best Dressed Young Lady (18-35 years) category, Janette Bishop was declared the winner with Bonnie Martin the runner-up.

Jamie Bennett won the Best Millinery category.

Trish Wendland from Dubbo won the Best Dressed Lady (40 years and over) with local Jacinta Cain the runner-up.

The Best Dressed Gent was Talon Buxton with Shayne Carroll (Bourke) the runner-up.

The Best Dressed Teen Boy (13-17 years) was Nicholas Wells and the Best Dressed Teen Girl (13-17 years) was Elly May Pagett.

The Best Dressed Child 0-12 years was Aubree Everingham with Ryder Anderson the runner-up.

Local educator collaborates on children’s literacy book Local educator, Kate Munro, is working to promote the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation’s ‘Literacy is Freedom’ campaign, which targets literacy in remote and indigenous communities and also among refugees.

“Their strategy is to try and provide early literacy training to staff and intervention for children that need it,” Kate told The Cobar Weekly.

“We know that for children who start school and don’t have previous literacy skills, generally it’s very hard for them to catch up.”

Kate has 20 years of teaching experience, seven of which has been spent in the area of learning support.

The ‘Literacy is Freedom’ campaign ties in with the work that Kate’s been doing in Cobar with the Ngalii Preschool and Cobar Preschool and also at Bourke.

“Usually people think preschool is all about play so over the years there’s been a little bit of resistance to actually bring in structured programs.

“I think as time’s gone along, the curriculum is starting to change and there is starting to be the recognition amongst early educators that

Budget adjustment Among the matters discussed at Cobar Shire Council’s Ordinary Meeting last Thursday was an amendment to the budget.

The amendment is part of the third quarter review of the budget which was recommended to councillors by the Director of Finance and Community Services, Kym Miller.

Mr Miller reported to councillors that a further $100,000 is required to finish council’s CCTV project.

“The core funding for this project was part of the drought allocation monies,” Mr Miller advised in his report to the meeting.

“As the project evolved it became necessary to install extra cameras to those in the original scope.

“This included additional cameras in the main street which had a ‘dead spot’.

“Cameras have also been installed at the [council] depot in a security upgrade.”

Mr Miller recommended that the $100,000 be transferred from the unallocated amount council had set aside for topping up grant allocations “as it has not yet been called upon and the financial year is almost completed”.

“The project has been very successful,” Mr Miller commented.

Councillors unanimously voted in favour of the budget adjustment.

“Cobar Preschool used the program last year and it provides training on things like breaking words into syllables, being able to recognise words in sentences, being able to count them, hearing the first sound in words, rhyming— all those really early pre literacy skills.

“We did some testing at the beginning of the year and the bulk of the kids had really picked up those skills really well.”

Kate said the feedback she’s received from the primary schools has been very favourable.

In particular, she said Cobar Public School had been so impressed with the results, they have now taken on the program and are using it in their classrooms as a follow on from what the students learnt at preschool.

“If you get in early, less children will need that literacy intervention over time,” she said.

For the past 12 months Kate has also been working on a project with the Connected Beginnings Bourke Early Childhood Capacity Facilitator Nichole Jenkins and the Connected Beginnings Bourke Team.

Kate wrote the content for the ‘Bourke Kids—Ready Set Read’ book and was in Bourke yesterday for the launch of the book at the Bourke and District Children’s Services as part of this year’s National Reconciliation Week activities.

Kate encourages parents to start developing literacy skills in their children early.

“If parents aren’t sure they can talk to a preschool teacher or talk to a kindergarten teacher about things they could be potentially doing at Kate Munro with the children’s literacy home, and a lot of them are really easy.” book she wrote the content for.

NSS is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association to promote the value of reading and literacy. One Australian book is chosen each year to be read simultaneously all over the country. Farmers and rural landholders are calling for a crackdown on pest and weed management, with reports authorities have dropped the ball.

Pests and weeds are a major issue for many rural and regional communities, and while farmers follow strict rules around controlling pest animals and managing weeds, some public lands are overrun with invasive species.

NSW Farmers Biosecurity Chair Ian McColl said it has resulted in production losses, wasted time and increased costs for landholders.

“Management of weeds and pests is an increasing burden on farming operations, and it’s frustrating when they keep coming in from the same place,” Mr McColl said.

“We all have obligations to keep these pests and weeds under control, but sadly some public land managers aren’t doing their part and it’s the community who ends up paying the cost.

“The NSW Government needs to ensure ongoing pest and weed management by local authorities, improve compliance by public land managers, and address the lack of enforcement where these obligations are being ignored.”

Pests and weeds cost the NSW economy $1.8 billion each year, and Mr McColl said simply cracking down on compliance will reduce those losses and the need to control outbreaks.

“While there has been increased funding to weed research and control, and increased awareness of the need to control pest animals, there should be a focus on where achievable gains in the immediate term can ease the pressure of management,” he said.

“It’s clear that the delegation to local government of enforcement is not working, so they need to be trained and funded to do that job. Public land managers have an important job to do, and they need to hold up their end of the bargain when it comes to being good neighbours.”

More cold, wet weather to come Cobar has shivered through a couple of freezing days with rain and icy winds keeping temperatures down.

The temperature only managed to reach 14.9 on Monday after a cool 9.5 degrees overnight and 15 degrees was the expected maximum for yesterday.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded rain six out of seven days this past week with Sunday our only dry day. A total of 12.8mm was recorded by the Bureau for the week with last Thursday the wettest day with 4.4mm recorded.

The sun shone on Saturday for the Cobar Races and produced a pleasant top of 17.3 degrees and the Golfie bowlers were also blessed with a sunny day with a top of 17.6 on Sunday.

Today is the first day of winter and it’s certainly going to feel like it with the Bureau predicting only a top of 13 degrees accompanied by more chilly westerly winds.

It’s not expected to get any warmer tomorrow with 13 also the expected maximum while Friday will be cloudy and colder at just 12 degrees (after an overnight low of two).

There’s also high chance of showers, up to 6mm on Friday.

The weekend looks to be slightly warmer with a top of 15 degrees predicted for Saturday, while Sunday is expected to reach a maximum 16. More showers are forecast for the weekend and also on Monday.

Trimming trees for a safe, reliable power supply

Essential Energy will soon carry out vegetation management in town, as part of their routine maintenance on more than 200,000 kilometres of powerlines in NSW and southern Queensland.

Essential Energy’s vegetation manager, Mark Daley said keeping the power on is only possible with a safe and reliable electricity network.

“Managing the vegetation that’s growing close to powerlines plays a crucial role in maintaining reliable power and community safety,” Mr Daley said.

Essential Energy is committed to doing everything it can to preserve the natural environment, however some management of trees and other vegetation is required to maintain a safe and reliable network.

“Our specialist contractors do everything they can to strike a balance between keeping the local trees and bushes, and maintaining reliable power supply for the community,” he said.

“Trees and powerlines can be a deadly combination, with branches coming into contact with overhead powerlines posing a serious hazard to people and wildlife.

“There’s also the increased potential for bushfires, damage to property, injury and unplanned power outages if contact occurs.”

Essential Energy uses directional pruning techniques that remove branches growing towards a powerline and encourage re-growth away from the power network, techniques that are considered best practice throughout the arboriculture industry and are used by most power companies in Australia.

Weather permitting, the vegetation program will commence later this month.

Students join the police line-up

Cobar High School’s Stage 5 Commerce class and their teacher Krystie Neale, visited the Cobar Police Station last week. The class is currently studying the topic of Law in Action and learning about laws and the rights and responsibilities of young people. Cobar Police Constable Tony Martin gave students an insight of how police complete their duties and assist the community. • What a small world it is! In last week’s should be doing with regards to the upgrades at

edition we had a story about Cobar nurse Genie McMullen being up for the Western NSW Local Health District Nurse of the Year award. Genie was however beaten for the title by Blayney nurse Christine Bright.

It turns out that Christine is a local Cobar girl (nee Christine Cain) who was born and went to school in Cobar. Christine’s family is thrilled with her win and understandably very proud of her achievements!

• Seven Cobar Junior Rugby League Under 14s and Under 15s players (Nick Hodges, Jaxon Burke, Axel Fairfull, Oisin McMullen, Tahj Foley, Tim Eves and Lyndon Cummins) were selected by their coaches to attend two Panthers Cubs sessions in Dubbo over the past fortnight. In recognition of their hard work and dedication to training, at the end of the sessions, three players were chosen to receive rep gear and included Cobar’s Axel Fairfull and Oisin McMullen.

NOTICE OF AIRBORNE GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY Commencing early June 2022, a low level helicopter survey will be conducted over land between Canbelego and Nymagee, being the exploration licences held by Mt Boppy Resources Pty Ltd the subsidiary of Manuka Resources Ltd. Some areas will also be flown approximately 30kms due south of Cobar. This will take approximately two weeks.

Manuka Resources has contracted UTS Geophysics P/L to undertake this survey, which will be flown with a AS350-B3 helicopter with underslung loop.

The helicopter will be flying approximately 85 m and loop 35m, in a series of lines running east to west and north-south at 200 meters apart.

We aim to ensure that we maintain a rapid progression through this survey.

The aircraft is carrying instruments that measure the resistance to an induced pulse. These are not harmful to live stock or humans. Pilots are used to working with stock and will ensure they do not stress animals and avoid when possible.

Young Roosters beat the Brewarrina visitors 44-10 With there being not much competition field on Sunday for an organised game to Sunday’s game. for the Cobar Roosters in the Castlereagh against Brewarrina.

The young Roosters played conservatively Youth League competition this season, the The Cobar boys came out keen and eager to and consistently well throughout the match in Cobar Under 18s were thrilled to take to the play after being let down multiple times prior both defence and attack which saw them through to a convincing 44-10 win.

Tries for Cobar were scored by Kai Greenwood, Ben Griffiths, Tyler Coughlan, Jarrod Hilton, Ted Smith, Tom Rogers, Fraser Talu and Coen Sylvester.

Ben Griffiths kicked four successful conversions with Ted Smith and Zane Taylor also landing goals.

The team is scheduled to play their next game in Bourke this Sunday.

Junior Roosters on the road again Three Cobar teams played their Round 5 games of the Dubbo & Districts Junior Rugby League competition in Dubbo on Saturday.

The club’s three other teams, Under 9s, Under 10s and Under 12s, all had the week off with a bye.

The Cobar Under 11s came up against St Johns Maroon and were narrowly beaten 24-18, with just a converted try the final difference.

Cobar’s tries were scored by George McDonald (2) and Talas Burke with goals The Cobar Roosters Under 18s side with their coaches Thomas Plater and Tristan kicked by Mason King, Talas Burke and Jaxon Waugh.

The Cobar Under 16s played a high scoring game that ended 48-24 in St John’s favour.

Oisin McMullen led the scoring for Cobar with three tries and Kai Taylor added another.

Tahj Foley kicked three goals and Toby Greenwood also landed one.

Oisin was named their Players’ Player with Tommy Bryan collecting the Coaches Award.

In Sunday’s Mini League games, the Under 8 awards went to Indie Burke, Michael Rogers, Hayden Betcke and Rogue Kilpatrick.

Cobar will host South Dubbo teams (from Under 9s through to Under 16s) for Round 6 this Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

Bowlers were out in force for Max Humphries memorial day The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club hosted a very successful Max Humphries Memorial Bowls Day on Sunday.

The event paid tribute to the late Max Humphries, who served as club president for 28 years.

There was a field of 42 bowlers (including seven players from Hillston) making up 14 teams of triples playing on the perfectly tended greens.

Some early morning dew, combined with much welcomed sunshine and minimal wind, made for a great bowls tournament.

After two lots of 16 ends were played, the team of David Schofield, Daryn Lord and Shane Carter, with +18, narrowly finished as winners over Kyle Roberts, Don Roberts and Ross Scanlon (Hillston) on +17.

Back in third place were Daniel Holt, Luke Anderson and John Fitzgerald (Hillston) with +12 and Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey, Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod and Jack Neale finished 4th with +10.

Without a doubt, Frank Singleton was the winner of the George The Giraffe Award.

Cobar golfers were on winners’ list at Narromine

Six Cobar golfers were among the lineup of golfers contesting the Narromine Open on Sunday.

Mark Fraser won the nine hole net competition in A Grade, Jason Hampel won the A Grade Longest Drive prize and Ray Yench finished as runner-up in the C Grade 27 Hole Net event.

At home, a Par event was played on Sunday and the scores were very ordinary which is understandable as the cream of Cobar golfers were in Narromine.

Greg Clark was the only golfer who looked like playing anywhere near his handicap in the local Par event with a score of +1.

Bill Fugar was second with -2, Rob Cummins managed to get third with -3 and Max Phillips finished 4th on -5.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Cummings on the 7th hole and visitor B Russ claimed the 8th and 15th holes.

Saturday’s Stableford was well contested with 13 players taking part in the event.

John Collins was the winner on the day with a very good score of 40 stableford points, closely followed by Jason Foster on 39, one shot clear of Chris Powell in third place on 38.

Powell too was one shot clear of Bian Smith in 4th place on 37 stableford points.

Nearest to the Pin (NTP) prizes were won

by Steve Manns on the 3rd hole, Scott Mayne on the 8th hole, Jason Foster on the 11th hole and John Collins won the 15th hole.

Last Wednesday’s Stableford competition had to be shortened to a nine hole competition after the rain hit the course making it unplayable.

The winner on the day was Will Brown with a impressive score of 19 stableford points.

The runner-up was another senior vet, Ray Yench, on 17 points beating Peter ‘China’ Brien on a count back, also on 17 points.

Scott Mayne snuck into 4th place with 16 stableford points.

NTPs were won by Scott Meadows on the 3rd hole and Peter Lawrence on the 8th hole.

It was a quiet week for the lady golfers It was another case of ‘course closed’ last Wednesday for the Lady Golfers as rain once again fell mid week and cancelled their scheduled event.

Numbers were well down for the weekend games as the Cobar Races, visitors, a wedding, Covid or other injuries took preference.

Barb Barklimore was Saturday’s Par winner after finishing with an even card.

She was well ahead of the other placegetters Fay Hardwick (-4) and Marlene Wynd (-5).

Nearest the Pin winners on the 11th hole were Fay Hardwick, Robynne Morton and Glenda Peebles.

Only five players contested Sunday’s Trophy Day, which was a Stroke event.

Pat Polack won the putting (with a total of 26 putts) and also the day posting a score of 78 net with Daphne Cross a close second on 79 net.

This week’s round of matches look to be in doubt as rain is predicted for most days.

If by chance the weather forecasters have got it wrong, today will be a Stroke game.

Netballers were back on the courts Netballers were back on the Ward Oval courts last Tuesday night for Round 4 of the Seniors Ladies competition after a week’s break for the Cobar Show.

The closest match of the night was between JKM Dynamic Fitness and Nymagee Magpies with JKM eventual winners, 47-33.

It was the Nymagee Magpies however who had the best start and they led 11-6 at the end of the first break.

Nymagee’s Goal Defence, Celeste Collins, was a standout in the match. She was everywhere on the court that she needed to be and provided her team with a number of turnovers. Her efforts earned her the game’s Best & Fairest three points.

JKM’s shooter Elleise Woodbridge kicked into gear in the second quarter and helped her side outpoint Nymagee 18-8 for the quarter and, by halftime, JKM had taken a 24-19 lead.

JKM continued to hold the upper hand for the remainder of the game to finish with a 47-33 victory.

Sharing in the game’s Best & Fairest points were JKM’s Sophie Clark (2) and Kym Sutton (1). Sophie also earned Sportsmanship points along with Nymagee’s Mollie Harley.

Divas finished the night with a big 54-25 win over Gumnuts in their match.

Divas’ Marybeth Lowe’s stretch in defence made it hard for the Gumnuts shooters and with Jennifer Shepherd also on fire shooting at the other end of the court, Gumnuts had a tough job all round. They did however put up some resistance with their mother/daughter shooting combination of Katrina and Angela Francisco working well; Gaile Talu had a good game in Centre and L’amour Blackmore also served Gumnuts well in defence.

In the game between Pumpettes and AyJays Café, the match was played in great spirits with the experienced Pumpettes side finishing with a 54-14 win.

Pumpettes quickly settled into the match while Ay-Jays made a nervous start. It wasn’t until the second quarter that Ay-Jays found their feet and then started to gel as a team.

Pumpettes were strong at both ends of the court with their defenders, the sisters combination of Molly and Neve Carter, combining well throughout the match. At the other end of the court, their mother/daughter shooting combination of Emma and Sosie Barton, were also in sync and kept the score ticking over.

Ay-Jay’s were well served by Jayde George who pulled off a number of intercepts and also by Mel Mills. Both collected Best & Fairest points with Jayde and Sosie Barton

New venue for soccer games

With Ward Oval currently out of action due to upgrades, the Cobar Junior Soccer Club played their games at the Cobar Camel’s Rugby Union Club on Saturday.

There were good numbers for the games (with a few players playing up a grade to help out) as a few players were away with the schools’ mid-term break!

In the Minis competition, United had a big 8-3 win over Wanderers; Rangers won 6-4 Over Rovers; and Liverpool and Chelsea played a 2-all draw.

For United, Logan McKenzie netted seven goals and Max Preisig kicked one while Leo Neale kicked two for Wanderers and Jack Preisig landed their other goal.

Rangers’ goal scorers were Darcy Geppert and Tom Geppert, with three each, while for Rovers, Ford Ellison (3) and Levi Mackay (1) were their goal scorers. In the drawn game, Leo Neale and Max Preisig netted a goal each for Chelsea and Logan McKenzie kicked both of Liverpool’s goals.

The Minis Milkshake Awards this week went to Max Preisig, Ethan Jebb, Tom Geppert, Dayna Armstrong, Archie Fugar and Jack Preisig and the Donut Awards were earned by Logan McKenzie, Leo Neale, Liam Peatey, Delilah McBride, Ashton Hyland and Juan Engelbrecht.

In the Mids competition, Liverpool finished as narrow 3-2 winners over United with Tom Preisig (2) and Cooper Trudgett (1) scoring for Liverpool and Jack Geppert kicked both of United’s goals.

In the other Mids game, Rovers finished as 5-1 winners over Rangers.

Rovers’ goals came from Mark McBride (4) and Mark Hibbert (1) and Jeremiah McMillan scored Rangers’ only goal.

In the Mids division the Milkshake Awards went to Zara Patterson, Hannah Trudgett, Jeremiah McMillan and William Skinner.

The Donut Awards were earned by Eden Cavalot, Jake McKervey, Leala Engelbrecht and Mark McBride.

The Seniors game was well contested and finished in a 4-all draw. Goals for Spurs were recorded by Isaac Theakston (1) and Luke Guirin (3) with Fraser Talu (1) and Jacob Theakston (4) responsible for Rangers’ goals.

The Milkshake Awards went to Chase Cavalot and Jayden Cryer with the Donut Awards earned by Jacob Theakston and Denika Brown.

Cobar netballers had a ball on tour Cobar Netball Association took a tour group of 47 players, coaches, umpires and helpers to Newcastle last weekend for the club’s first Sister City tour.

The Cobar teams kicked off the weekend by participating in a ‘Nettyheads’ netball skills session which was a valuable learning experience.

Each team was put through their paces learning new skills and drills.

On Saturday the teams played against local Newcastle teams, while the Cobar coaches gained insight into the Greater Bank Series Championship Division team huddles, and Cobar umpires were panelled for their National Umpiring Badges.

One of the tour organisers, Alex Brown, said all of the Cobar teams were successful in winning games throughout the day, including their Under 17s squad who walked away undefeated.

“Young gun Ethan McLeod took the court with the Hunter Netball Under 14s Boys team, walking away with an invitation to play with them at Junior State Titles in Penrith in July,”

Mrs Brown said.

“Cobar umpires Georgie Chaplain, Kym Sutton and Leah Le Lievre, were also successful in attaining their National C and B Badges which is a huge achievement.”

On Sunday, the teams played in the Maitland District Netball Carnival, playing against state representative teams from the Hunter, Northern Inland and Mid North Coast divisions.

“It was a cold, challenging day which provided further exposure to netball opportunities at a higher level.

“The tour was highly successful, gaining significant positive feedback from associations, clubs, teams, players and parents throughout the weekend.

“Our sportsmanship, commitment and representation of CNA was highly recognised.

“We are looking forward to this partnership program continuing next year,” Mrs Brown said.

Two big wins for Roosters club

The Cobar Roosters club celebrated two big wins over Trangie in their Christie & Hood Castlereagh Rugby League First Grade and League Tag games played on Friday night at Trangie.

The Cobar men’s First Grade side thrashed Trangie 56-8 and the Roosterettes were in complete control of their Ladies League Tag game winning 66-12.

The Roosters First Graders played very well despite missing a few key players (who were out with injuries or work commitments).

Their structured play, speed out of the rucks and consistent line breaks helped them to rack up a big score.

Roosters’ fullback Ashley Davies led the try scoring with three tries for Cobar with Jack Brown, Tim Hillam, Ben Griffiths, Jed Noonan, Thomas Plater, David Watson and Marty Turton also crossing.

Plater converted eight goals and once again picked up Cobar’s Best & Fairest three points.

Two points went to Davies (and he was also selected as Players’ Player) and one point was earned by Nathan McAndrew.

In the ladies game, the Trangie defence was shattered on multiple occasions as the Cobar girls consistently scored through the middle of the field.

Brianna Watson finished the match with three tries for Cobar, Taylah Good and Aisha Schofield added two each, and Bianka Jacobson, Madasan Taylor, Georgia Boland, and Mel Singh also touched down for tries.

Grace Burge also crossed for her first try, playing for the Roosterettes.

Watson kicked nine goals.

Aisha Scofield collected Best & Fairest three points, Mel Singh picked up two points and one point went to Georgia Boland.

Bianka Jacobson, who had a hand in a number of tries, was named the Roosterettes’ Players’ Player.

The teams are on the road again this weekend to take on Baradine in Round 7.

Great racing action at autumn race meeting Jake Barrett was a proud apprentice jockey when he hoisted the impressive WesTrac Cobar Cup above his head after winning the Cobar Miners Race Club feature race on Saturday. From the outside barrier, No Debt ($2.20 fav.) raced wide to the home turn then accelerated to a four lengths win over Travstar (Meredith, $5) and Japingka (James Rogers, $9).

Carrying the 60kg top weight in the 1,200 metres Sullivan’s Mining & Industrial Benchmark 50 Handicap, Sipharderson (Gallagher, $2.80 fav.) shared the lead then held off the challenge from Late Return (Lewis, $9) to win by a long neck.

After taking on Sipharderson for the lead the Wayne Prisk, Cobar-trained Jawsome (Angela Cooper, $10) battled on for a game third.

Bred and raced by Heather and David Ringland from Dubbo, Sipharderson completed a winning Cobar double for trainer Brett Robb.
