THE COASTLAND TIMES

MRS. HAYWOOD AND MRS.CHRISTI Manteo Elementary School

Dear Santa,

The Duck Town Council and Staff wish our residents and visitors a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year! May your days be merry and bright throughout the season.

Hello friends, Throughout the Outer Banks, this has been an exciting year for the arts and artists. At Dare County Arts Council, we’ve been fortunate to work with hundreds of people – talented professional artists, emerging student artists and audiences from Duck to Hatteras Village. I’d like to wish everyone in Dare County a Merry Christmas and Happy New Decade! Next year, we have a number of programs and events to look forward to. On the immediate horizon, I’d like to invite everyone to attend the opening reception of the Frank Stick Memorial Art Show on January 25, at DCAC in Manteo. Now in its 42nd year, the Stick Show is one of the longest running arts events in our area – and the reception is always a great

event, free and open to the public. In 2020, we will also break ground on the Courtyard Project. This effort, involving dozens of donors and our partners in Dare County government and the Town of Manteo, will convert the empty lot behind our facility at the historic Dare County courthouse into a beautiful multipurpose courtyard for the arts. As Dare County celebrates its 150th anniversary, we are honored to be the stewards of this wonderful building which has seen over 100 years of local history. Some other highlights in 2020 include a special exhibit in June to support our Expressions of Hope and Healing program, a collaboration with Outer Banks Hospital to provide arts education and experiences to families impacted by cancer. Throughout

2020, DCAC will present over 20 new art exhibits, more than 100 art classes and dozens of engaging events such as Artrageous, the New World Festival of the Arts, Rock The Cape on Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks Veterans Writing Project. To everyone on the Outer Banks, thank you so much for your support of the arts in Dare County. Our home has such rich traditions of history, culture and creativity – it has been my honor to witness the continued development of our arts community. On behalf of everyone at DCAC, I’d like offer a special message of gratitude to our donors, partners, members, volunteers and audiences. We couldn’t do it without you!

Warmest regards, Chris Sawin Dare County Arts Council

To the residents and property owners of Southern Shores, My best wishes to you for a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Enjoy a wonderful time with your family.

Mayor Tom Bennett On behalf of everyone at NCDOT, we’d like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2020! It’s been a busy year here on the coast. After decades of efforts and challenges, we opened the brand new Basnight Bridge over Oregon Inlet, designed to provide safe and reliable access to the residents and visitors of Hatteras Island for generations to come. We are in the midst of building another bridge at Rodanthe to bypass

an area known for serious ocean overwash issues during major weather events. And, the North Carolina Ferry System introduced passenger ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke, a major boost for our summertime tourism economy. Of course, we’ve seen our share of challenges as well, most notably the devastation from Hurricane Dorian in September and a serious tidal f looding during a pair of

nor’easters this fall. But the hardworking men and women of NCDOT stand ready to respond to anything Mother Nature throws our way, and we will continue our work to connect the people of northeastern North Carolina to their homes, schools, jobs, and services for now and in the future.

Merry Christmas! Allen Moran North Carolina Transportation Board Member

each of you, I say thank you. I am also grateful for the endless support and encouragement we receive from parents and community members. Without your partnership, our work would often go unfinished. This time of year presents us with the opportunity to extend tidings of peace and love to our families and our neighbors. It is a time for us to reflect on our responsibility to share with the less fortunate, to forgive each other, to care for the sick and the hungry, and to treat each other the way we would want to be treated. It is also a

time for us to remember the brave men and women that serve in the United States Military, many of whom are deployed all around the world. As we look towards a new year, I am excited about the opportunities that await Dare County Schools. Please know that I value your input and contributions to our schools. My door is always open. CHEC employees worked tirelessly through a difficult storm season and ended the year by receiving national recognition for their commitment to safety. This is the eighth time that CHEC has received recognition by the Rural Electric Safety Accreditation Program. Theatre of Dare would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thanks to you, our audiences, we had a great 2019. We’ve been able to delve into the literary genius of both William Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe. We’ve laughed along with The Nerd and cried during Tuesdays with Morrie. And we’ve taken you

back to 1944, when the Christmas Spirit shone through amidst the darkest days of World War II. We gave out $3,500 in scholarship money, and raised $1,100 for hurricane relief during TOD’s very fi rst benefit performance! We look forward to entertaining you even more in the coming year, when Theatre of Dare will celebrate its 30th

Santa pays a visit to Kill Devil Hills

by Danielle Puleo danielle.puleo@thecoastlandtimes.com

On Dec. 14, Santa stopped by the Town of Kill Devil Hills. Over 70 families came to visit Town Hall that night to see Santa, go on a “sleigh ride” and enjoy some hot chocolate and goodies with one another and town staff. “We have had a lot of people come through,” said Rachel Tackett, KDH public information specialist. The event lasted

from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The town makes this an annual community affair, free of charge and filled with lots of holiday spirit. New this year, local students hosted a craft where families could make their own reindeer food and color a gingerbread man or Christmas tree before they set off on a sleigh ride around Aviation Park. Scott Baxley, an employee of the town with the Buildings and Ground

Department at KDH, had his children and extended family come in to sing Christmas carols. “They’re used to singing in their church choir,” Tackett explained. Volunteers were there to serve hot chocolate, apple cider and lots of sweets to the families that came in. Santa and his helper, Addison Hedgepeth, were seated in the Meeting Room DANIELLE PULEO PHOTO to greet and talk to all the Scott Baxley’s children and extended family, singing Christmas carols while Santa met families that stopped by. with the children.
