Welcome to the 7th annual Outer Banks Bluegrass Island Festival! This is where the Carolina coast meets the sound of bluegrass music at one of the most beautiful sites on all of Roanoke Island! Hemilright Entertainment welcomes all the faithful fans who have been with us throughout the years. If this is your first festival with us, hold on to your hat - you’re in for a real treat. On Wednesday, October 3rd, just across the bridge at the Bluegrass Island Trading Co. store, our celebration begins. Our annual kick-off shindig will feature several fan-favorite artists and bands for some FREE pickin’ on the porch. Don’t forget your lawn chairs and blankets; come early and grab a spot on the lawn -everyone is invited! Scheduled to appear is 14-yearold, gifted flat picker Presley Barker who will kick us off at 2:30 p.m., followed by the seasoned Edgar Loudermilk Band featuring the highly acclaimed guitarist, Jeff Autry, at 4:00. Then, the pedigreed sixpiece powerhouse, Sideline, will take the porch at 6:00, and America’s Got Talent 2015 semi-finalists from North Carolina, Summer Brooke and the Mountain Faith Band, will close out the night beginning at 7:45 p.m.! If you are a V.I.P. Passholder, don’t miss out on your plate of BBQ fixins! Plates will be served beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday afternoon on
Bluegrass Island hosts incredible artists, including Australia’s new iconic voice in bluegrass, Kristy Cox; a reappearance of the one and only, Sideline; and the considerable, Boston-based acoustic quintet talent: The Lonely Heartstring Band. Following the dinner break, the evening will first finish out with the Grammy Award-winning Queen of Bluegrass (and official Queen of Bluegrass Island!), Rhonda Vincent, accompanied by her infamous band, The Rage. The queen and her decorated, knockout group will be returning to our stage for their seventh-consecutive festival performance! Closing out the night will be the highly respected, 24-year-strong powerhouse known by many fans as: Blue Highway. Friday boasts first-time Bluegrass Island performances by Cane Mill Road -- the young, high-energy talent from Western NC; Mile Twelve -- a fresh, traditional and original, hard driving band; and Donna Ulisse, a bright star in the bluegrass, folk, and acoustic scene. After the supper break, the night will close out with outstanding performances featuring the unmistakable musicianship of the Darrell Webb Band, and a stew of bluegrass/newgrass simmered by Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen. On the closing day of our festival, we begin with the honorable and heartfelt music of Cuttin’ Grass from
eastern and central North Carolina, followed by the 13-year-old, Opry-famous fiddle player from east Tennessee, Carson Peters, along with his band known as Iron Mountain. Before the break, we will hear yet another home state favorite band and top-notch vocal group: Deeper Shade of Blue. After our bellies are full and our spirits are high, the night will end with a bang beginning with the innovative and original band, Breaking Grass, with their groundbreaking music all ages can enjoy. The finishing touch to this celebration will be our 2018 headliner: The SteelDrivers. Souls will be moved as their dark, intense, poetic, and inescapably human, brand of Bluegrass will rock out the entire Island. At age 13, Presley Barker has been playing acoustic guitar for six years. Living in the North Carolina mountains and listening to Doc Watson on the radio inspired Presley to begin picking fiddle tunes and bluegrass music. He has been influenced and mentored by Steve Lewis, Wayne Henderson and Bryan Sutton. He has quickly emerged as an astonishingly gifted flat-picker. In the summers of 2015 and 2017, Presley won first place in the prestigious Adult Guitar Competition at the Annual Galax Old Fiddler’s Convention in Virginia, and in the summer of 2016, he was named West Virginia State
first place; pulse-pounding drive, songs sung from the heart, perfected timing and dynamics as well as a visceral emotion in the rendering. A band that was started as an off-season fun experiment has become a full-time dream team of players and singers. The band, recorded or live, move dynamically from well chosen, hard-hitting neo-traditional covers of classic songs to new material curated by a band with a perfect sense of who they are and what they have to say. Combine all this with their on-stage energy and finesse as well as their powerful and affecting harmonies, and you have the embodiment of the North Carolina Bluegrass sound. Sideline has released 3 national projects and currently records for the highly awarded Mountain Home Music Company based near Asheville, NC.

Presley also appeared on NBC’s “Little Big Shots” with Steve Harvey and “Wonderama” TV show in New York City. He had the honor of winning first place and a D-28 Wayne Henderson Guitar at the 2017 Wayne C. Henderson Guitar Competition at Grayson Highlands Park in Virginia. Presley released his first solo album entitled “JUST-TEN” in the

Edgar Loudermilk was greatly Influenced by his father and grandfather, and cut his teeth on bluegrass by learning to play bass. He played with his family’s band until he was 20 years old when he joined the group Carolina Crossfire. He later played with Rhonda Vincent, Marty Raybon and Full Circle and then Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out. After a brief collaboration with Dave Adkins, Loudermilk struck out on his own to form Edgar Loudermilk Band, featuring Jeff Autry. You can enjoy their music beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Founders Steve Dilling, Skip Cherryholmes and Jason Moore can all claim their own historical significance to the genre as members of highly awarded groups, multiple Grand Ole Opry appearances and years of national and international touring. What started as a side project for the seasoned players soon moved to the front and center as the three were joined by talents of Bailey Coe, guitar; Troy Boone, mandolin and Daniel Greeson, fiddle and began to record and release albums in earnest. Bluegrass vocalist and fiddler Rhonda Vincent began her professional music career at the age of five, playing drums with her family’s band, the Sally Mountain Show and has spanned more than four decades. She picked up the mandolin at eight and the fiddle at ten, performing with the family band at festivals on weekends. Vincent first achieved success in the bluegrass genre in the 1970s and ‘80s, earning the respect of her mostly male peers for her mastery of the progressive chord structures and multirange, fast paced vocals intrinsic to bluegrass music. After appearing on TNN’s
Rhonda Vincent nationally televised You Can Be a Star program in her mid-twenties, Vincent struck out on her own, singing with the Grand Ole Opry’s Jim Ed Brown, eventually leading to a deal with Rebel Records. Her work with Brown and her Rebel recordings caught the

During their years together, Blue Highway has maintained an unusually high level of excellence in their music, consistently turning out bluegrass that’s characteristically true to the principles of the genre while remaining both memorable and original. Amazingly, the original personnel from the band (which formed in 1994) remains intact, a remarkable achievement in itself, given the frequent mixing and matching of personnel that is more the norm (banjo player Jason Burleson did leave for a short period early on, but soon returned to the band). The only exception to that is the substitution on Dobro of talented newcomer Gaven Largent, already doing an inspiring job of stepping into Rob Ickes’s big shoes, and indeed making his own mark. Banjo luminary Tony Trischka says, “Mile Twelve is carrying the bluegrass tradition forward with creativity and integrity.” Since their formation in the fall of 2014, Mile Twelve has quickly been on the rise. They’ve performed extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Japan, including sets at major festivals such as Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, FreshGrass Festival, Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival, and Joe Val Bluegrass Festival. Donna Ulisse
Records in the early 1990’s where she released a critically acclaimed album Trouble at The Door with three singles and two videos. She was also a guest on many national television shows including Hee Haw, Nashville Now, Crook and Chase and NBC’s Hot Country Nights. These days Donna Ulisse is a key figure in the bluegrass, folk and acoustic music scene as a singer and songwriter. Her single “It Could Have Been The Mandolin” from the album Hard Cry Moon topped the Bluegrass Unlimited chart at #1 for two months in a row in 2016 and the album topped the Roots Music Report chart at #1. She also won the award for 2016 International Bluegrass Music Association’s Songwriter of the Year. In 2017 she signed with Mountain Home Music Company, record label of some of bluegrass music’s brightest stars and released her eleventh career album “Breakin’ Easy”, produced by bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson. She was a featured guest on RFD-TV’s Simply Bluegrass show hosted by Ricky Skaggs which featured the biggest Friday, October 5th names in the genre. Brooke Aldridge, The Bankesters, Doyle Lawson, Larry Stephenson Band and Volume Five to name a few, as well as a song on the 2014 Grammy winning album Streets of Baltimore by the Del McCoury Band. In 2017, she was the winner of IBMA Song of the Year for the song “I Am A Drifter” recorded by Volume Five. She authored the book The Songwriter in Me: Snapshots of My Creative Process and is the founder of Lil House Songwriting Workshops offering aspiring songwriters the opportunity to write with her and other pro writers in order to improve their skills. Darrell Webb Band is no stranger to Bluegrass Island. They have entertained attendees several times on both Bluegrass Island and at Pickin’ On The Porch at the Bluegrass Island Trading Co. Darrell Webb Band brings energy and excitement to the concert stage reaching beyond traditional boundaries. Their brand of entertainment has earned them multiple nominations at the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards. After a successful career as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist in bands such as Wildfi re, Rhonda Vincent and The Rage, and Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper,

Since Frank Solivan left the cold climes of Alaska for the bluegrass hotbed of Washington, D.C., he’s built a reputation as a monster mandolist – and become a major festival attraction with his band, Dirty Kitchen. Solivan, with banjoist Mike Munford, 2013 IBMA Banjo Player of the Year, award winning guitarist Chris Luquette, and bassist Jeremy Middleton, simmer a bluegrass/newgrass stew from instrumental, vocal, and songwriting skills so hot,

Cuttin’ Grass was Co-Founded in 2016 by Wally McKay and Amos Rozier and maintains 4 of the original members including Doug Meade & Steve Moore. Recently, the band has added Billy Powell and Will Lutter to complete the ensemble. The band performs a wide variety of Bluegrass from traditional to modern with a fair amount of Gospel tunes spread thru every set. Cuttin’ Grass honors the roots of the music and those that have pioneered the growth of the Bluegrass genre thru the years. They offer an energetic, artistic and heartfelt authenticity to the songs they perform. Come early on Saturday as Cuttin’ Grass begins the last day of the festival at 11:00 a.m.

Friday begins at 12:30 p.m. with Carson Peters & Iron Mountain. Carson Peters started playing the fiddle at the ripe old age of 3 when his parents bought him a 1/8 size fiddle. By age 4, he was in competitions and jamming at festivals. Today,
Deeper Shade of Blue Carson is a seasoned performer playing numerous venues, seen on TV and performed at the Grand Ole Opry with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder. He lives in Piney Flats, Tennessee with his parents, Jamie and Robin. Carson has been blessed to have a great band, IRON MOUNTAIN to help him entertain audiences performing old-time, bluegrass, and gospel music. The band consists of Carson’s father, Jamie, Eric and Ben Marshall of Mount Airy, NC and Austin Tate of Marion, Va.

Deeper Shade of Blue has spent 17 years together and released six independent projects, and have just signed with Mountain Fever records as well as Wilson Pickins Promotions. It seems they are ready to pursue a whole new level with this strong team guiding them. The band consists of guitarist Troy Pope who sings the lead, supported by the father/son duo on Jim Fraley on banjo and Jason Fraley on mandolin, with Frank Poindexter on reso-guitar, and Scott Burgess on bass. Their new release, STEAM, out on Mountain Fever Records is already performing well on the charts and garnering escalated bluegrass radio airplay wherever
you tune in. It’s full STEAM ahead for these guys, keep a close eye on them!

Heralded by CMT Edge as “one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene,” the music of the Nashville based group The Barefoot Movement is as down to earth as their intention for members of their audience: sit back, relax, take your shoes off, and stay a while. All the worries and frustrations of the world melt away as the charming fourpiece acoustic band takes listeners back to a simpler place and time. Whether you’re seeking emotional ballads or rip-roaring barn-burners, you can expect a collection of music that offers something for everyone. With two full length albums, several cross-country tours, and appearances at some of the top bluegrass festivals in the United States already under their belt, the possibilities are endless. The group has enjoyed almost non-stop touring including a trip to Burkina Faso, Africa where they were guests of the American Embassy. With their fresh sound, original material, strong vocals and innovative musicianship, Breaking Grass is doing exactly what their name implies. Although not quite traditional, the music they present is without a doubt steeped in the timeless genre they grew up listening to. Comprised of Cody Farrar on guitar; Tyler White on fiddle; Thelton Vanderford on banjo; Zach Wooten on mandolin; and Britt Sheffield on bass; this relatively new band formed with one goal in mind - to make music that all ages could enjoy.

Nashville, Tennessee is a nexus – a point where tradition and innovation intersect, where commerce collides with art. It may be the only town around where salaried songwriters and full-time session musicians are as common as accountants and schoolteachers. Music is the product, and the factories line the street, from the swank Music Row mini-high-rises to the low-slung Sylvain Park bungalows. And only Nashville could give birth to a band like the SteelDrivers: a group of seasoned veterans – each distinguished in his or her own right, each valued in the town’s commercial community – who are seizing an opportunity

The SteelDrivers to follow their hearts to their souls’ reward. In doing so, they are braiding their bluegrass roots with new threads of their own design, bringing together country, soul, and other contemporary influences to create an unapologetic hybrid that is old as the hills but fresh as the morning dew. This is new music with the old feeling. SteelDrivers fan Vince Gill describes the band’s fusion as simply “an incredible combination.” The SteelDrivers’ brand of bluegrass – intense, dark, poetic, and inescapably human – is a refreshing reminder of the timeless power of stringband music, and is captured perfectly on The SteelDrivers. Produced by Nashville ace Luke Wooten, The SteelDrivers was
recorded mostly live on the studio floor, vocals and all. Its songs grapple with classic themes of regret, love, and redemption, from the escalating prison lament of “Midnight Train to Memphis” to the chilling murderer’s plea encapsulated in “If It Hadn’t Been for Love.” “East Kentucky Home” is a timeless traditional bluegrass lament, with its strains of homesickness, loss, and abandonment, but ingeniously reinvented with off-kilter rhythmic accents and a decidedly contemporary chord progression. The willingness to set aside the unspoken rules that ruthlessly govern bluegrass set the SteelDrivers apart from the innumerable faceless acts vying for the bluegrass spotlight.
