The 1770 Festival is thrilled to announce its headline act for 2025 – 7 Whales, an explosive and genrebending band hailing from the Gladstone Region, will take the main stage in an unforgettable performance alongside the Gooreng Gooreng, the Traditional Custodians of the land.

Letter To The Editor - Jeffery Court Changes
I write on behalf of the Jeffery Court Action Group (JCAG) to make the wider Agnes Water community aware of serious concerns about a recently proposed change to Agnes Street that would result in all vehicles going to the main beach having to exit by going around Jeffery Court.
This change — which turns Agnes Street into a one-way street at the beach end — was not part of the court approved traffic design for the Agnes Street car park. It was not part of any community consultation process and contradicts Council’s own expert traffic evidence presented at Court that underpinned approval of the development.
Council’s expert traffic engineer's evidence noted that Jeffery Court is already highly congested and not wide enough to safely accommodate additional vehicle and pedestrian
interactions when cars are parked on the street. Furthermore it confirmed that one of the benefits of the new Agnes Street car park was to decrease traffic circulated around Jeffery Court.
The redirection not only contradicts what the community was led to expect, but has been proposed by Council post-approval, without community consultation or transparency.
The Jeffery Court Action Group contacted the Agnes Water Police who have confirmed in writing that there have been no recorded traffic incidents along Agnes Street. This raises the question: what risk is the proposed change trying to solve?
We have written to Council raising the above concerns and to stop the proposed one-way trafic change. They acknowledged the correspondence but after nearly one month no reply has
been received despite constant follow up.
This is not about opposing development as the Agnes Street car park is necessary — it’s about ensuring that planning decisions are sensible, transparent and reflect what was approved, in this case by Court. Council’s proposal to force all cars visiting Agnes Water main beach to circulate around Jeffery Court in order to exit lacks common sense, transparency and will create a problem that currently doesn’t exist.
Sincerely - Ben Dunlop
On behalf of the Jeffery Court Action Group
Gladstone Regional Council responded to Jeffery Court Action Group’s 23 April letter on 8 May and intend to meet with them in the near future.

Local business and national tourism icon, 1770 LARC! Tours, celebrates their 31st Birthday this May!
What an achievement – operating daily in the stunning surrounds of the Town of 1770 and Agnes Water using unique amphibious vessels.
Owner and operator Neil Mergard shares with us that this milestone is something he is truly proud of, “When my Dad suggested in 1994 that we go to inspect an ex-military vessel that he found in the Trade-a-Boat magazine, I can tell you, I was excited to check it out. Yet I could never have imagined exactly what it has evolved into – this is literally my dream job, every day is different and exciting, and I really am so grateful.”
“We live in this amazing community, with spectacular nature all around us, so our LARC team have the opportunity to share and educate tens of thousands of guests onboard our
vessels each year."
“Being in the Eco Tourism Australia Hall of Fame, we highlight all aspects of the environment during our commentary and love it when we see the difference this makes,” Neil said.
1770 LARC! Tours employs more than ten locals in a variety of roles that he refers to as LARChanics, LARC skippers, LARCeting and promotions, LARCettes, LARCeolgy, it sure is a unique business right here on our doorstep.

COOK & the BUSTARD
BY JODIE RICHARDS
In 1770, when James Cook and his crew first landed on these shores, they did what most 18th-century explorers did—shot the first thing they saw and ate it. That unlucky creature was a Bustard, and it was apparently so tasty that they named Bustard Bay after it. Fast-forward 250 years, and the Australian Bustard (Ardeotis australis) is now listed as a vulnerable species in Queensland and endangered in New South Wales and faces ongoing threats from displacement.
Standing over a metre tall, these ground-dwelling birds strut about like they own the place. And in a way, they do! Their lineage stretches back tens of thousands of years, and they feature in the Dreaming stories of many First Nations peoples. They’re an enduring part of the story of this place from ancient songlines to colonial landings; the Bustard has stood witness.
According to local birder, Stephen Goldsworthy, they can be spotted around the Baffle Creek Bridge on Fingerboard Road, and out toward Mt Maria and Miriam Vale. In fact, Bustards can be found across Queensland on grassy plains and cattle-grazing pastures. They can be quite hard to spot because they’re masters of camouflage and usually silent. But if you hear one, you’ll never forget their booming roar, which sounds more like a lion’s roar than a bird. Scan the QR code to learn more and hear it.
As we gear up for this year’s 1770 Festival, keep your eyes and ears open. The Bustard is still very much a part of this place. If you see or hear one share it via “Agnes Water & 1770 Birders” Facebook group.

Bundaberg and Burnett Celebrate Investments in Community Groups
• 20 local organisations will share over $533,000 in Grants
• $16 million shared across QLD as part of the record-setting round.
• More than 2000 applications were received across the State.
20 local community organisations will share over $533,000 in the latest Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) round.
The Crisafulli Government has announced Bundaberg and the
Burnett’s share of more than $16 million in grants as part of the recordsetting round.
Across Queensland, almost 630 community groups have been awarded grants of up to $35,000, to support a wide range of projects and initiatives.
The latest round delivers a welcome boost to the region, with funding helping to upgrade local facilities, support grassroots sporting clubs and provide essential services.
Community Partnership Program
Have your say …
Private Energy Partners (PEP) is proposing to build a Solar Farm and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Miriam Vale. As part of our planning, we are seeking ways to make tangible, long-lasting contributions to the local community through a Community Partnership Program. We will allocate $200,000 to the program annually.
Scan the QR code or visit our website miriamvalesolarfarm.com.au/community to see our program ideas and give us your feedback by Friday 23rd May 2025.
Your input will help us create a program to meet the needs of your community – today and into the future.
Learn more about our projects at miriamvalesolarfarm.com.au or miriamvalebess.com.au or call us on 1800 975 039 to talk to our team.
More than 2000 applications were received across the State, which was the largest number in the program’s 31-year history.
Recipients across Bundaberg and the Burnett will share over $533,000 in funding, including $34,000 for Camp Gregory Veteran's Retreat, $32,010 for Red Collar Rescue, $28,291 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service Bundaberg Base and $35,000 for YMCA Bundaberg.
Local MP Stephen Bennett said the grants would help community organisations at a time when budgets have been stretched by cost-of-living increases.
“This program empowers local heroes across our region, and helps their organisations grow and thrive,” he said.
“Red Collar rescue will finally be able to purchase a tractor which will bring a welcome relief for the shelter."
“It’s been a challenging few weeks for Nerida and her team and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see the funds go towards such a deserving organisation."
“While here at the Y (YMCA Bundaberg), their tired courts will be undergoing a $35,000 upgrade to provide a safe and structured environment for our community."
“Agnes Water Surf Life Saving will purchase a trailer while the Queensland Country Women’s Associations in Childers and Miriam Vale will both be undertaking facility upgrades with $18,000 and $26,000 grants coming their way."
“These groups and clubs make up the fabric of our communities; it’s no stretch to say we’d be lost without them."
“I’m encouraging other local organisations to start preparing for the upcoming Super Round that opens in June and closes July 18.”
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity Deb Frecklington said the record-breaking interest in the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund demonstrated its importance to local communities.
“These grants are a huge benefit across Queensland’s towns, rural centres and cities, and they can be a lifeline for organisations that are doing it tough,” the Attorney-General said.
“You only need to look at the list of recipients in Round 122 to see the difference these grants make to the people and places that make our State strong.”
MIRIAM VALE SOLAR FARM AND BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM
CEO of YMCA Bundaberg Greg McMahon said the courts will become a hub for sporting activities and social engagement, keeping young people of all ages connected to the community.
“The funds will mean that the court facility, originally built in 1973, will see a resurface and installation of shade sails to ensure the site remains accessible to all members of the community, from children and teens to adults and seniors,” said Mr McMahon.
“The enhanced court facility will continue to serve as a shared use venue for these groups and others, fostering social connections and a sense of belonging.
“At the heart of the Bundaberg region, the Y is committed to building a healthier, more inclusive, and connected community.”
Following the impacts of recent natural disasters, the upcoming GCBF Super Round (Round 124) has been rescheduled to ensure impacted organisations have the time and capacity to apply for funding.
Round 124 of the GCBF, offering grants of up to $100,000, will open 9 June and close 18 July 2025.
For more details and a full list of recipients from Round 122 of the GCBF, visit: www.justice.qld.gov.au/grants .

Colin Boyce MP: Thank You, Flynn - Looking Forward to the Next Term
The Federal Election was held on May 3 and I would like to thank the people of Flynn for their support. It is an absolute honour to have been reelected for my second term.
As of the 12 of May, I’m pleased to say that I have recorded a 6% swing towards me and have increased my margin to just under 10% on a twoparty preferred basis. For me, it’s about holding the government to account. I have grave concerns about Central Queensland, its future and for our traditional industries.
The simple fact is that you cannot rely on renewable energy alone. If Australia continues to go down the road of 82 per cent renewable energy by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050, I fear a repeat of the mass power outages that we have seen recently in Spain and Portugal which are countries that are both heavily reliant on renewable energy.
To kick the idea of nuclear power into the long grass for future Australians is an absolute tragedy. Nuclear power just like coal is among the most safe and reliable energy sources in the world. Nuclear energy is something Australia needs to consider for the future of business and industry in Australia.
There are many countries around the world increasing their nuclear capacity
as they are understanding that renewable energy is not reliable. This is something that I will continue to call out as the Federal Member for Flynn.
Furthermore, I also wanted to remind the community that the Flynn Electorate Offices are open and here to help:
- Gladstone - 76 Goondoon Street (07 4972 5465)
- Emerald - 2/115 Egerton Street (07 4982 4266)
- Gayndah - 39 Capper Street (07 4140

If you have any matters relating to Federal issues, you are welcome to visit us, call, or email Colin.Boyce.MP@aph.gov.au.
Once again, I would like to thank the people of Flynn for their support. It is beyond a privilege to represent our community.

Local Artist Captures the Heart of Agnes
I’m sitting here dreaming on Agnes point.
I’m sitting here oh she makes me feel so doit.
The hills are green and oh so me. The coral sea looks so clean. But I know she can be real mean. To all extremes.
I’m sitting here thinking about what life brings.
I’m sitting here thinking about all those things.
I don't mind if you’re not like me. But are you blind or can't you see. The whole world is just one scene. But it's to all extremes.
What you see is what you get. Its not over until it's over yet. Whats it takes for us to realise. That what you see will disappear before our eyes.
I’m sitting here living and loving with Agnes.
I’m sitting here loving life all around us.
Once a beauty she will always be. You found a friend she comforts me. She’ll know what the future sees.
To all extremes. I wonder do we understand.
To share this beauty with our fellow [hu]man.
Aussies best kept secret is at hand. Just ask Bruce... He’s one who’ll understand.
