THIS ISSUE There is no such thing as easy. We get better. I had a Masterminder who was complaining that it was harder than they thought it would be.

Seriously. MOST businesses fail in their first year. Most people will never tackle running a business because it’s easier to work for someone else. This is because running a business is not easy and never will be. You just have to do it long enough to get good at it. Until then, do more. Learn more. Take on more. Get good at it or be a stat.

HOW WE MARKET TO OUR LIST with an ‘Early Bird Offer’ with a great reward for taking action early. We get pretty good conversions doing this – around 40% of all sales occur right there in the first two weeks.

I keep the email marketing pretty simple these days. I don’t want to bombard them with offers or reminders to buy. Most of the emails I send are value add, so content that our market might appreciate. This is how I divide our list:

If they have just opted in they get the first two weeks of pretty intense emails about coach training, why do it, how it works and how cool and fabulous we are, ending

Most internet marketers tell you that people aren’t ready to buy until later, once you’ve educated them, and we’ve worked out our ‘later’ is within two weeks, and then two weeks after that. As these Early Bird emails are going out, I’m writing other emails to the rest of our list. I leave the Early Bird list out of it, so they don’t get double the numbers of emails. It looks something like this, depending on the

next Intake Weekend training… Let’s say we have an Intake Weekend training in Melbourne in the first week of the month after this. It’s Sept now, and the training is in the beginning of October. I will send emails only to Tassie, Victoria, WA, SA, overseas, Unspecified (no address) so NSW, QLD and ACT is not getting emails they would be less likely to take action on. I will target only the past two months, excluding the last two weeks, so that the Early Birds are not hammered with emails. Beginning of the month, I send cool content. Just a

cool quote, something I learned, something someone shared with me. We get good responses from this and a conversation may get started, which our consultants handle. This will be maybe an email every third of fourth day, sometimes every five days, so low pressure and touch points. About the third week, I will do a cool content email and mention a training that is coming up and how it’s nearly full. I’ll give a reason for this, like “Looks like people are gearing themselves for the New Year…’ I will mention the cool gift packs we’re giving away to people who are currently enrolling with us, in the P.S. so super understated.

Towards the fourth week I will step it up a little like this: “Only five places remain for the next event in Melbourne. Looks like people are really committed to being all they can be and making a difference. And there are four gift packs remaining. Let me know if you would like to know about them.”

And that link goes to an email called timetoact@thecoachingin stitute.com.au and our team chats with them. Then as the end of the month approaches, I count it down. So I’ll write a little cool something and then say, ‘BTW only two gift packs remain. I have one for you, just let me know if you would still like it thanks!’ so people respond to us and we get talking with them.

So the big pressure around urgency is done by the Intake approaching and the end of the month and scarcity is created through the number of gifts packs that remain slowly decreasing. Then at the end of the month I send an email saying, ‘Just wanted to let you know the next Intake in Melbourne is now fully booked.’ So letting them know they didn’t act and because of that they missed out. So it’s all pretty low key, keep being cool – well, as cool as I can be! – laid back and not really concerned either way about it, it just all seems to just be happening as we’re chatting, kind of tone. Whatʼs your campaign strategy?

MEMBERʼS QUESTION QUESTION: What’s your number one tip for success, for what to do and for what to study?

ANSWER: Where do I begin on how crap this question is? So we’re clear, it is not boiling down to one of anything. Anyone who is looking for the magic pill, the secret short cut, the easy fix, or the sound bite, go get a nine to five job with guaranteed workday filled with routine. You are not cut out for business.

But if I was to answer this, it would be this – Stop asking dumb ass questions and take action every single day, and study the whole Small Business Academy Membership Area for one hour a day. Just do that. And stop asking for simple answers to a complex challenge.

The people who do well are taking responsibility for what is going on. They’re not saying it’s someone or something else, they want the responsibility because then they get to do something about it and influence it. When someone thinks it’s something or someone else, then I know that they’re not a leader. They’re actually the block to what we want to get done, because them moving forward is limited to when circumstances or

people like the credit for the good stuff and don’t want to take responsibility when it goes wrong. You want people who are wired the other way around – who take responsibility for what goes wrong and give credit to others for what goes right. GOOD QUESTION TO ASK - BASED ON THIS, WOULD YOU HIRE YOU? Leadership of self is the 101 of life. People in my business who complain, who blame, who justify and who make excuses have a really horrible time until they change their thinking

There is no compromising on this – every research study of great companies says the same thing – great companies are made up of people who take responsibility for the crap and who aren’t interested in the credit. If you’re starting out, complete an organisational chart with all the roles your ultimate business will have. Put your name into every slot. Do all those roles. Slowly, replace yourself with the least skills roles to the more skilled. At every step have a system to guide them and a strong sense of responsibility for their success. And learn leadership, firstly with yourself, and then with others.

David Howells Does Business Over Wine The Law of Reciprocity Works! Finished marketing workshop in The Barossa around 2pm yesterday ... phone call at 3pm and working with first client by 9am this morning. Initiated some changes to workshop coming out of TT and after discussion with "Awesome Ilse" .. they worked. Beautiful venue at Jacobs Creek Visitor Centre (a must visit if you are in SA), sensational capacity audience and an absolute pleasure and privilege to serve and share at the front of the room. The home cellar has also been seriously replenished after receiving a number of unexpected gifts of outstanding Barossa wine from attendees before leaving today. Feeling a bit humbled and WOW'ed right now. Must also thank the sensational crew support from Jane Benston and Claudine Burgess .. a very classy, inspiring and professional double act on their own.
