The CLR strives... The Center for Latino Research strives to open and sustain dialogues which foster the empowerment and advancement of Latinx communities. To that end, the CLR creates learning opportunities for students and supports scholars in their research, while forging collaborative relationships with local, national, and international research partners. We also publish an award-winning scholarly journal, Diálogo, and sponsor many activities on campus, including film series and speaker series.
A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR, DR. JOHNSON GONZÁLEZ As we begin a new year and a new decade, I’m delighted to offer this newsletter to bring you information about the CLR’s upcoming activities, as well as to provide you with an update about the things we’ve been up to so far this year. Inside, you’ll find information about our Fall 2019 Speaker Series Precarious Lives, our current Winter Quarter speakers, and our newest issues of Díalogo. You’ll also find important information about how to apply for the annual CLR Faculty Fellowship. We’re looking forward to the upcoming year at the CLR. We’ve already begun 2020 by reaching out to, and strengthening ties with, communities within and outside of DePaul. We recently partnered with the Center for Black Diaspora (CBD) to bring Haitian American writer Edwidge Danticat to campus -- an event that drew over 200 attendees. We are collaborating with community organizations like El Beisman and Efecto Violeta to bring Tatiana Clouthier to campus. And we are continuing our work with the Latino Research Centers at Northern Illinois University and Notre Dame to establish an online repository of Midwest Latinx Oral Histories. As part of this project, we’re bringing Fanny Julissa Garcia, an oral historian from the New York Historical Society, to campus, and soon we will be working with the CBD and the Women’s Center to pursue grant funding for research in oral history. Next quarter, we’re looking forward to working with Erika Sánchez to organize a symposium on Latinx Young Adult literature. We will be bringing prominent writers to campus and several DePaul faculty will present their research in this area (we hope the presentations will be published in a special issue of Diálogo). As always, the CLR is here to help support and advance your teaching and scholarship, so if you have an idea, need funding or assistance, or want us to collaborate with you to bring a guest speaker to campus, please let us know how we can help! CLR was a founding partner of the Midwest Consortium for Latino Research (1988-1999), and is currently a member center of the national consortium for policy issues, the InterUniversity Program for Latino Research (IUPLR). Projects with other universities include the initiation and creation of a Midwest Latino oral histories collection.
DIÁLOGO
Diálogo, an Interdisciplinary Studies Journal is a refereed journal published since 1996 (biannually since 2012) by the Center for Latino Research at DePaul University in Chicago, with production and subscriptions handled by the University of Texas Press. In 2018 the journal received the CELJ Phoenix Award for transformation and revitalization over a three year period. Although most issues of Diálogo up to the present have had a special theme, the Advisory Committee voted to open the journal up to general submissions. We hope that publishing a variety of articles in each issue will attract more readers.

FACULTY FELLOWSHIP Eligibility: The CLR Faculty Fellowship is open to all full-time, tenure track faculty in any discipline, and is supported by the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences. The fellowship grants recipients a one-quarter teaching release (2 classes) for research and writing. In addition, the CLR provides up to 100 hours of student research assistant support. Within one academic year following the fellowship period, recipients are asked to submit a final outcome or publication, and to do a short public presentation of their work. JANUARY 13, 2020 AN EVENING WITH HAITIAN-AMERICAN AUTHOR EDWIDGE DANTICAT The CLR collaborated with The Center for Black Diaspora, led by Julie Moody Freeman. Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat read from her work and engaged in conversation with students and faculty. Over 200 people attended this event, which was dedicated to the memory of those lost in the 2009 earthquake in Haiti as well as to those enduring hardships in Puerto Rico after recent earthquakes there.
JANUARY 15, 2020 THE DEATH AND LIFE OF AIDA HERNANDEZ: BOOK PRESENTATION WITH AUTHOR AARON BOBROW-STRAIN Aaron Bobrow-Strain, a professor of Politics at Whitman College in Washington state, presented his new book, The Death and Life of Aida Hernández. During his presentation, he discussed the ways in which violence against women has been weaponized by border control forces as a tool to deter migration in our current paradigm of managing undocumented migration through "preventive deterrence." 6

NEW INITIATIVES FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE The CLR has established a Fundraising Committee. We are hoping to create an Alumni Board as we look for ways to fund future projects. The committee is chaired by Marisa Alicea, Professor at the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Members include Chris Tirres, Maria de Moya, Carolina Sternberg, and Bill Johnson González.
ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
The CLR has entered into a partnership with Northern Illinois University and Notre Dame to build an online archive of oral histories of Latinx communities in the Midwest. DePaul's library collections, particularly the Young Lords archive, already contains important national resources for documenting the histories of Latinx activism in the Midwest. By embarking on a project to stimulate the collection of more oral histories by faculty, we hope to continue to expand our library holdings and create an archive that will provide rich materials for researchers. 8
