EL CENTRO NEWSLETTER FALL 2020

The Center for Latino Research (CLR) strives to open and sustain dialogues which foster the empowerment and advancement of Latinx communities. To that end, the CLR creates learning opportunities for students and supports scholars in their research, while forging collaborative relationships with local, national, and international research partners. We also publish an awardwinning scholarly journal, Diálogo, and sponsor many activities on campus, including film series and speaker series.​

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR, DR. JOHNSON GONZÁLEZ

These days, it's a cliché to say that we live in unprecedented times. We are assaulted by seemingly daily new evidence of ongoing racist violence directed especially against Black persons, but also against other marginalized populations such as immigrants, women, and transgender people. We're living through a global pandemic that has devastated lives across the planet and fundamentally altered the fabric of our lives as teachers and citizens. Our democracy is teetering, to say the least. The West Coast is currently on fire, experiencing what some say is the worst air quality in the world, while government leaders deny scientific evidence of climate change. Many of these problems are the result of long-standing historical and systemic inequities, and a habitual failure to pay attention as things got worse, and yet everything also seems to be screaming, demanding our attention in a new state of urgency and emergency.

What can we do? Emergency also evokes the possibility of new things emerging. We are in the space of a quickening, of urgent decisions, of calculated risks. We may be in a space of endings, but it is also a space of beginnings; new paths lie ahead - maybe not the ones we had been planning on, but these are points of departure, invention, and possibility nevertheless. The previously unthinkable is being thought; what was impossible may now be approachable. Things are changing, people are mobilizing. Young people are demanding better. The future may not be easy, but perhaps this is a chance to seize the moment, to bring about a new way. Normal was simply....the norm.

We already knew it wasn't working. So - what can we do?

I'm hoping we all stay healthy. I'm hoping we put compassion and care for each other in the forefront of everything we do. I'm hoping we take it easy on ourselves. And I'm hoping we will still help one another to get extraordinary things done.

CLR was a founding partner of the Midwest Consortium for Latino Research (1988-1999), and is currently a member center of the national consortium for policy issues, the Inter-University Program for Latino Research (IUPLR). Projects with other universities include the initiation and creation of a Midwest Latino oral histories collection.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dr. Delia Cosentino (Diálogo) received the 2020-2021 Center for Latino Research Faculty Fellowship.

Dr. Rocío Ferreira (Diálogo) was appointed as Chair of the Department of Women's and Gender Studies Dr. Joe R. Tafoya (CLR) received the 2020-2021 Center for Latino Research Faculty Fellowship Dr. Chris Tirres (CLR) was appointed as the inaugural Endowed Professor of Diplomacy and Interreligious Engagement at the Grace School of Applied Diplomacy.

Dr. Ester Trujillo (Diálogo) received the 2020-2021 Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Fellowship and was named Visiting Faculty at Brown University for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The Center for Latino Research was awarded a $2,000 grant from the DePaul Diversity and Inclusion Initiative Grants (DIIG) to support a festival and book fair on Young Adult Latinx Literature. The event was originally scheduled for Spring 2020 but has been postponed until Spring of 2021.

FACULTY FELLOWSHIP

Eligibility: The CLR Faculty Fellowship is open to all full-time, tenure track faculty in any discipline, and is supported by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The fellowship grants recipients a one-quarter teaching release (2 classes) for research and writing. In addition, the CLR provides up to 100 hours of student research assistant support. Within one academic year following the fellowship period, recipients are asked to submit a final outcome or publication, and to do a short public presentation of their work.

The application deadline for this year is February 12, 2021.

PAST EVENTS: WINTER AND SPRING 2020

JANUARY 13, 2020: AN EVENING WITH HAITIAN-AMERICAN AUTHOR EDWIDGE DANTICAT

The CLR collaborated with The Center for Black Diaspora, led by Julie Moody Freeman. Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat read from her work and engaged in conversation with students and faculty. Over 200 people attended this event, which was dedicated to the memory of those lost in the 2009 earthquake in Haiti as well as to those enduring hardships in Puerto Rico after recent earthquakes there. An interview with Danticat wil be included in an upcoming issue of Diálogo.

JANUARY 22, 2020: CLR TERTULIA

On January 22nd, 2020, the Center for Latino Research hosted its first-ever Tertulia, a faculty and staff-only event for the Center's Faculty Fellowship recipients to share their work with their colleagues.

JANUARY 23, 2020: TATIANA CLOUTHIER

Tatiana Clouthier was the 2018 presidential campaign manager for Mexico's current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She gained notoriety for her clever use of social media to mobilize Mexican voters and win the elections. On January 23rd, 2020, Clouthier visited DePaul to talk about her work as campaign manager and give a brief presentation of her book, Juntos hicimos historia [Together We Made History].

FEBRUARY 7, 2020: ORAL HISTORY WORKSHOP WITH FANNY JULISSA GARCIA

The Center for Latino Research hosted a three-hour workshop for faculty and staff interested in oral history. The workshop was led by award-winning oral historian Fanny Julissa García and included an introduction to oral history, core techniques, and listening skil s. Attendees also learned interview techniques, protocols to follow, and how to address ethical issues, among other important oral history basics.

FEBRUARY 11, 2020: POETRY READING WITH YESIKA SALGADO

Poet Yesika Salgado, whose work gained traction through her social media accounts over the last few years, visited DePaul on February 11, 2020 for a reading of her work and a presentation of her latest poetry collection, Hermosa, before an audience of approximately 225. The reading was followed by a book signing. You can read about her work here.

JUNE 7, 2020: 24TH ANNUAL LATINX GRADUATION

The Annual Latinx Graduation, which is hosted by the Center for Latino Research and sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity, was originally scheduled for Sunday, May 17th, but due to the ongoing health crisis, those plans had to be cancelled. In an effort to stil acknowledge the accomplishments of our Latinx class of 2020, we created a virtual procession, with a welcome from President Gabriel Esteban and keynote speech from Ambassador Carmen Lomellín. You can watch the virtual procession here, which has garnered over 900 views since launching on June 7th, and access the virtual yearbook here.

NEW INITIATIVES DIVERSITY CONNECTIONS FOR INCOMING STUDENTS OF COLOR

Diversity Connections for Incoming Students of Color is an initiative created by the Center for Latino Research and the Center for Black Diaspora in collaboration with the Global Asian Studies Program, Critical Ethnic Studies, the Office of Admissions, and the Office of the Dean with the purpose of fostering a sense of community for incoming students of color ahead of their first quarter at DePaul, informing them about the resources available to them, and introducing them to faculty, staff, and current students.
