Four Goals as ‘Marching Order’ for the future

Cuatro objetivos en cadena para el futuro

By mid 2018 the Almond Board of California (ABC) endorsed four goals which should be reached by 2025: Further reducing the water used for almond growing, increasing adoption of environmentally friendly pest management tools, achieving zero waste in the orchards and fourth goal: improving local air quality during almond harvest.

In a press conference Holly A. King, newly elected to chair of the Board of Directors, Mel Machado, Director of Member Relations at Blue Diamond Growers, Mike Mason, former chairman, Daren Williams, Senior Director of Global Communications of the ABC, and Richard Waycott, President and CEO of the Almond Board, explained the four goals and offered some backgrounds on it. Holly King emphasized the importance of these goals as the desire of the organization for continuous improvement. “We are working on the metrics it is very important to measure against

USA these goals. We will be open and transparent regarding the progress for ourselves and the community around us as well. This process will allow us to collect data about how we are doing and how we manage to make optimum use of the resources.” It’s a bit of a lofty goal, but let’s do it! Mel Machado: Farmers have always been an innovative group, but they are also a private group. In the last twenty years we increased the water efficiency by 33% by the same amount in pounds of almonds. We knew that but we did not communicate it until we were in the throws of the drought. To take it to the next step we want to reduce the water use by another 20%. Through the whole process of establishing goals it was clear that it was not an easy task to achieve them. And may be will not reach all these levels, but we are open to re-adjust and reset as we need to do. These goals do not come out of the media. There are four points which I am discussing with grower committees for many years : about pesticides, dust, water, about the biomass products as well. What we have to do is to reach targets, each one after another. If I Iooked to the water goal first I said: How do we get there? Success is normal for us doing things, so that growers forgot: Wow, to a certain degree I did this already. It’s a bit of a lofty goal, but let’s do it. Richard Waycott: For an industry it is very helpful to have set these goals. There is a time line, and it allows the industry to commit and unify. We believe that these goals are attainable and economically viable and we will finally see whether things we did not expect come up.

USA agua, me pregunto: ¿Cómo llegamos?

Emily Fleischmann oversees the Board’s marketing activities in eight countries consumer-oriented, in general, he is interested in the economic results, he or she is more business-like in general. The farmer of the future must adapt to the labor force drying out more and more. Would that boil down to the employment of cognitive robotics? Richard Waycott: In some areas like spraying we do see some robotic equipment and there are trails underway to explore how harvesting is the next sector of mechanization. Mel Machado: In the near future I do not see the “human being”farmer being replaced by robotic systems. Tree crops in general are not first choice for mechanization.

In crop year 2017/18 (August 01, 2017 to July 31, 2018) the marketable almond production amounted to 2.4 billion pounds (1.3 million t) compared to 1.4 billion pounds in 2007/08.In 2017/18 the industry exported 67% of the crop (1.5 billion pounds), 734.7 million were marketed domestically.

Almonds are shipped to more than 90 countries. In 2007/08 the share of exports was the same, but the domestic shipments were only at 31% (395 million pounds). This is due to the tremendous efforts of the Board to increase almond consumption in the US. The top-ten export markets represent 71% of total exports. The export heavy-weights were Europe with 620 million pounds, of which Spain alone took 203 million, followed closely by Asia-Pacific with 613 million pounds (40% of total exports).

USA Globally there are five markets with more than 10% growth in shipments, i.e. China/Hong Kong +16%, India 19%, Italy +18%, Japan +18% as well as Mexico +20%. Consequently market development efforts were started in Mexico, Japan and Italy. In 2017/18 one million pounds were exported in shelled state, 144 million pounds manufactured and 353 million – mostly to India and China – in-shell. A century ago, 30% of the American population lived on farms. This number has decreased to less than 2%. According to the USDA Agricultural Census 6,800 almond farms were registered, 91% of them family farms owned and operated by third- and fourth-generation farmers who live on the land and will pass it on to children and grandchildren. The bearing area in 2017 was 1.33 million acres (5.34 million ha) .75% of California almond farms are 100 acres (40 ha) or less. California’s almond farmers, both small and large, take a long-term view of success with respect of the land, natural resources and local communities. Every almond farmer recognizes that growth must be matched by an unprecedented commitment to sustainability. They are focused on responsible and efficient use of water. 80% use efficient irrigation methods like micro-sprinklers and drip-irrigation. This reduces the water to grow each

USA pound of almonds by 33% over the past twenty years. With the Almond Irrigation Improvement Continuum the industry avails of a roadmap to accelerate adoption of research-based water-efficient production techniques. The hull/shell vs. kernel mass is 2:1. That means two pounds of hulls and shells for one pound of kernels. These sidelines of production have traditionally used as livestock bedding and feeding and burned for power generation. Changing markets and increased production have led to investigate new spin-offs. At the end of their production lives trees are ground into small chips and distributed through the soil. Recent research has found benefits of mulching like increased soil organic matter, better water filtration and carbon sequestration.

Taste and crunchiness required by industry and consumers alike

It was the first time that an almond conference was discussing varieties of almonds. This symposium was in line with the 2025 goals set by the Almond Board putting more emphasis on transparency and positioning California Almonds first in taste and consumer awareness.

Mark Kline, Senior Manager Nut Sourcing, The Hershey Company,Hershey, Pennsylvania Regarding features of ingredients we take emphasis on taste and crunchiness. The flavour is as important as texture and crunchiness. The ingredients must have the nutty aromatic characteristics of roasted almonds and the grade of roasting should be like other food items browned by heat treatment. The aroma should not be attributed to aged fat or ranciness. There should be no aromatic traces of wet cardboard from package or from the process. The kernel size is expected to be between 21 and 22 mm. There were trials in 2010 aiming at replacing whole almonds by chopped almonds by adding some more kernel weight to it. The consumer reaction was just immediate. The demand for these products went

John Duarte, Duarte’s Nursery, Hughson

down significantly and furtheron there were whole almonds used all the time. Especially the “Kisses” product is bound to whole almonds inside. For other product types other categories of ingredients are required. In general sizes should be 30/32 pieces per ounce. For chocolate bars they need flat almonds, for molded typs small nuts are required. John Duarte, Duarte’s Nursery, Hughson The nurseryman presented the Bennett-Hickman almond variety, found by Jim Bennett near a windmill in Hickman. Together with his sons he experimented with the new variety. Duarte said that they have sold until now about one million trees. In its behavior it is like Nonpareil. The bloom lasts 34 days average and harvest occurs two weeks after Nonpareil, the predominant almond variety in California. The kernel quality has been found similar to Nonpareil with the same roasting features. The kernel in fact is more crunchy and more flavorful than Nonpareil. The tree is full stature, but not as tall as Nonpareil, is yielding 15 to 25% more at the same irrigation amount.

State of the industry – looking into the future

Estado de La Industria - Mirando al futuro

Richard Waycott, CEO, and Holly A. King, Chairwoman

Richard Waycott, Director ejecutivo y Holly A.King presidenta de ABC

When we look back to this year, the Olympic motto fits to our activities: Citius (faster), altius (higher) fortius (stronger).

Three years ago we raised the assessment per pound from three to four Cents. By August 1, 2018 we came back to three Cents. By the beginning of June the Almond Board Board of Directors voted for the Almond Orchard 2025 Goals. We developed a new vision and mission for the industry. I would like to introduce our new Chair, Holly A. King, who has been elected in April 2018, succeeding Mike Mason. The chairpersons during my tenure have taken so much time out of their lives in addition to their work and we very much appreciate this. King: In our industry there is one thing constant: that is change. Last year we saw a high degree of insect damage and it played havoc with our European markets. This year we had frosts up and down the State, and we didn’t have that before. There are new developments

USA in the world trade theater: there are retaliatory tariffs, non- tariff trade barriers with a lot of change. But the demand remained strong, and that is very positive. There are other regulatory challenges especially in the area of water supply, but there are also positive elements: the Air Resources Control Board approved an incentive for low-dust harvest equipment. There is continued change on the marketplace: between a mixture between traditional food companies and entrepreneur food companies. We saw Campbell’s retreat, we saw amazon pulling out of the fresh business and Nestlé offered one of their brands for sale. On the homefront we welcomed some new members of the board, we restructured the committees and we worked on the strategic direction of our industry in order to meet the future needs. Waycott: We just forget that we ended the last crop some four months ago. Last year we had a record production and record shipments. Until 2020-22 we will have a crop of about 3 billion pounds. A lot of growth is coming up and a lot of opportunities. Looking at consumer awareness, we see on most of the markets that consumers realize that almonds are a healthy snack and a healthy food. That is the result of the investments and global marketing programs so far.

When we go back to 2010 we will see that we were almost equal to other types of nuts like peanuts and hazelnuts. In the last seven years the gap has widened due to our efforts to highlight the almond as a Number One product with sufficient supply and most importantly the versatility of our almond. I think that we are not a world in ourselves, but a class apart around the world as a food material. THE CLIPPER 4-2018

USA King: The international trade environment has been a bit sticky all around. There is no doubt that the retaliatory tariffs led to a certain . The ear themn also in sweets.disruption between buyers and sellers. After that in fall the markets kicked up, and our position report shows record shipments, and I am sure that this will even more emphasized when the position report on November comes out December 11. The US Department of Agriculture developed a mitigation program to help farmers who have been hit hard by the retaliatory tariffs. The program consists of several pieces, but there is a direct payment piece in it. Originally almonds were not listed in this program. Due to the of the Almond Alliance, specific industry members and the staff of the Almond Board we became part of the Program with US$36 m. We organized work shops up and down the State that growers can learn how to access this money. In addition that program includes a ag trade promotion piece with US$200 m. The Almond Board applied for US$7.5 m to do some promotion around the world in addition to our annual US$3.5 m, which we get annually for our global trade development.

USA Is the program perfect? No, it isn’t. But we are now part of the Direct Payments program as the only two specialty crops and the only nut crop. The important thing is that we definitely got “on the map”. It proves the fact that we as an industry pull together and achieve results together. By way of the higher incentive until this year we gained US$67 m for market development and research. I can tell you that 88% went into market development. Waycott: A huge amount of this money is invested in the German market. Because the German market is a conendrum. We had some difficulty to figure out how really to get to the German consumers and to deal with the retail sector. Finally we decided after some research to really take on the challenge to educate German consumers. Germans eat a lot of almonds and they also

The funds were invested in these market in which we have done something before. New on the map is Japan. We had in the past some programs there. Originally we wanted to invest our money in other Southeastasian countries, but finally after a visit we feel that the third biggest economy in the world is worth it.

In other South American countries like Brazil and Argentina our trials show that it takes some additional efforts to be effective and reach our goals. We have not initiated specific programs as yet. In India we are following a research program against diabetes and obesity as well. These are real problems out there. In general we are dealing with weight management combined with diabetes. As a rule we have to be on the forefront in our ever changing world and tackle problems and challenges by just looking ahead.

To snack or not to snack? No question.

Aperitivo o no? No hay color.

Looking to our pace of life today, it is important to redefining eating moments in America. We did a survey what is in for the Y-generation (millenials born 1980 to 2000) in snacking. The title of the study we called ‘craveology’. It is just the unpacking of psychology behind craving. A craving is the mind in the body longing for something which is not just present. Their comforts is temporarily out of balance.

That’s why snacks are really important to North American snackers .Their stress levels really driving us. 15% questioned in the survey say that their hectic lifestyle requires snacking. They simply wouldn’t be able to get food without snacks. They provide something which they are in need of: Energy, satiety, or even just a moment of self-recognition, the acknowledgement of the busy lifestyle they are in. This presents an opportunity for the almond industry.

USA Snacking is getting more trendier and more prolific than ever. Gen Y is now entering midlife, Gen C (creation, curation, connection – you-tube generation) is entering coming of age. When you couple that of the nutritional “Zeitgeist” we are observing today for healthier alternatives which is positive for our body. Formerly snack were identified as chips and chocolate, a bit like fruit and veggies. What we see now is some thing like ‘exploding the category’, the shifting of consumers’s attitudes is blowing it up. 94% of US adults are actually snacking. The average weekly snack occasion takes up every single day part. Not surprisingly: a major part of this is driven by the younger generations. The younger generations are snacking more and older generations. Younger generations claim that they don’t have just time for traditional meals. This is really reshaping the way we are eating here in North America. We call it the ‘snackification’of the society. Anywhere you look, you’ll see a lot of snacks, some unexpected, some traditional. You see people snacking out of their back packs, they are opening a drawer where they have hidden things. They snack everywhere. This is inspiring for the almond industry. Half of all eating occasions in the US are now for snacks. The combined sales of bisquits, snack bars, savoury snacks, ice cream, bakery snacks has increased by 3%, expected to be 6% by 2025, by contrast the compound sales

JC Longbottom of ag food sales increased by 0.8%. We see a lot of investment into these channels. How do we use the versatility of our almonds to make it a part of the snackification of the society? People today are about what’s in their snacks just as much as what is not. Sugar has been the bogeyman of the nutrition with sugars,

USA sweeteners, additives and anything which is unrecogniseably to consumer today. That is something they trying to avoid. Consumers are really shaping the landscape. Consumer sentiment has evolved in a regulatory environment. The “No, no, no” argument is leading nowhere. But there is a new dimension we are aware of: that people are looking for the positives in their food. How do I find things, which are safe, good for my body and give me great vitality? They are looking for good fats, antioxidants, and protein. The consumers in our survey say that 90% is maintaining a good balance of a healthy diet and a big role, which is now considered a healthy lifestyle. We are able to tell a great story, that almonds are a good stuff snack.
