For the small family business GNS Food (Great Nuts) Arlington, Texas, it was a lucrative contract. GNS supplied the nut mix that American Airlines serves its guests in the premium classes as a welcome drink: Aloha mix, Cajun Spicy Peanuts, Cinnamon and Orange Pecans. But then came Corona, and the airline cancelled its annual order, as did other airlines in the USA and around the world. And so the company now sits on 42 tons of partly raw, partly roasted and already packed nuts...

Corona – and what next?

Coronavirus, ¿y ahora qué?

Would you have thought a year ago that we would have to wear a mouth guard in public places today? In Asian countries mouthguards are part of the street scene, but in our country?

Keeping your distance, washing your hands more often, entrance controls in supermarkets, taking fever readings at airports - these are the symptoms of the pandemic in everyday life. Relaxation leads to a higher number of cases.

The good news is: The trade in dried fruits and nuts has not collapsed like other sectors of the economy, but is in excellent health. This does not affect all sectors, but most. Large harvests of almonds and pistachios ensure a vibrant market, and in the case of almonds, significantly lower prices. Consumption at home is rising, while restaurants and caterers are still suffering from the lockdown in many countries.

Tour operators are having a hard time, both for holidays and business trips. Big question marks arise for the trade fair and exhibition sector. Ideas are needed here, and some organisers have provided some at the request of this magazine. Which brings us to the key question: what will be ‘after Corona’. We have talked about sustainability, but this term is based on the normal course of events.

EDITORIAL

It is fair to say that the consumption of nuts has not suffered, it has continued to increase. One example is India. In times of a pandemic, people there trust in the therapeutic effect of nuts in the fight against the virus. For macadamia nuts, we look to South Africa, which exchanges macadamias for table grapes, especially in the north and east, and the price per kilo of the product is already a significant factor. As in each issue of The Clipper magazine, our correspondent reports from Russia, a market that should live by import substitution after the import restrictions, which is not (yet) possible and definitely not the case. So what “creative diversion” do nuts and dried fruit from sanctioned countries take? At this point a preview of the next issue of Clipper magazine: We will focus on sorting technology and, as usual in this magazine, we will report on it from different angles. Gerhard H. Breuer

Gerhard H. Chocolate – square format is exclusive

Schokolade – quadratisch ist exklusiv

For decades Ritter Sport has been advertising its chocolates with the slogan “Squared. Practical. Good.” The Alfred Ritter company in Waldenbuch near Stuttgart had the characteristic packaging protected as a trademark in the 1990s.

Seit Jahrzehnten wirbt Ritter Sport für seine Schokoladen mit dem Slogan “Quadratisch. Praktisch.

Mondelez, among other products the manufacturer of Milka chocolates, had been trying to have the trademark cancelled for ten years. Had the trademark protection been dropped, other manufacturers would have been allowed to sell their chocolate in square form.

Now it is final: the square shape is reserved exclusively for Ritter Sport chocolates. This has now been finally decided by the German Federal Supreme Court (BGH), which has dismissed a corresponding action brought by Milka manufacturer Mondelez. The shape has no artistic value and does not lead to

According to the judges, the buyer sees the square shape as an indication that it is the chocolate of a particular company and thus has expectations of quality. But that is not the point. Interview with Richard Waycott, president, Almond Board of California, Modesto

The Clipper: Please let us have an overview about the market situation for Californian almonds. What we hear is that the offer is quite big whereas demand is still sluggish. R. Waycott: The statistics contradict that. The 2019/20 crop end of July ended up with 450 million pounds of old crop beginning the new crop year. For many years this has not been the case. We’ve had 300 million pounds or so in the previous years. This helped satisfy some of the demand in August. The shipments of new crop almonds were also strong with what had been processed and was available to be shipped in August. The commitments for future shipments are at historic high levels. The typical cycle is occurring well. In 2019 we had a larger crop than estimated, and a bumper crop again this year. That represents in two years 30% growth in volume and with COVID-19, continuing issues with Chinese tariffs, a temporary lockdown in India for two months, and all of that combines to a lower price of almonds earlier this year.

30

THE CLIPPER 3-2020

USA The Clipper: How are logistics doing? There were reports about bottlenecks because of the Corona virus pandemic in the shipping and port handling. R.Waycott: We have not registered these reports. We had some delays initially between February and April mostly due to the Chinese slowdown. The number of containers coming back from China decreased as a result of the slowdown , which caused fewer ships calling US ports and consequently the time period to ship grew a bit longer. I understand now that for instance shipments to India take longer. There is still less ship availability than normal. We don’t have any significant bottlenecks. The Clipper: That also applies for US ports? R. Waycott: I have not heard of any difficulty. The Clipper: The almond crop 2020/21 has started. What are the news so far? R. Waycott: We started about August 1 and are almost two months into the crop. We are doing the last part of the harvest now. Everything looks very strong. The harvest is going well. There are not statistics available at this time. Anecdotal comments from a few growers/handlers I’ve talked with recently point to the 3 billion pound estimate being within range and quality seems to be good. The only difference this year is that nut sizing is running smaller given the large yields, i.e. more nuts per tree but smaller sizes. People

The Clipper: ¿Cómo va la logística? The Clipper: ¿Tampoco en puertos Estadounidenses?

The 2020 crop year is off to a fantastic start. August shipments were a record 193 million pounds, up about 45 million pounds compared to last year. With a larger carry-in from last season, attractive prices and an increased appetite for new crop NPIS, this doesn’t come as a complete shock. Crop receipts through August are up 35% or about 72 million pounds more than last season at this time. August was a very active month with new sales of about 288 million pounds compared to 193 million pounds in August 2019. Total commitments are up 88% or 494 million pounds more than last year, with both domestic and export commitments up 89% and 87% respectively. Based on a crop size of 3.00 billion pounds, California is currently 37% sold (shipments + commitments) compared to 25% sold at this same time last season

Since the July shipment report, prices in California have increased by about US$0.20/lb or more for most items. Several factors have contributed to this increase: • Global demand from all major markets has increased dramatically this past month. • Early crop receipts have reflected smaller sizing compared to the last few seasons.

36

THE CLIPPER 3-2020

USA Growers are reporting that average sizes for Nonpareil and Independence varieties are at least a full size smaller than last year. • Demand for NPIS from India and more recently China, has been very robust. • With Nonpareil kernel prices heavily discounted to unsized NPIS, there has been a lack of selling • Demand from the U.S domestic market for standard and commercial grade material has been substantial, resulting in prices on the lower end of the market also increasing by as much as $0.20/lb. • Buying interest has exceeded selling interest for much of the past month. With commitments tracking considerably higher these last few months, seller participation has been limited, especially as packers’ find their season pools very well sold for this time of year.

• • •

In 2012 the exhibition space in Modesto was too small. The Almond conference was relocated to a tent. The same happened 2019.

Almond conference goes virtual

The Almond Board of California (ABC) will host The Almond Conference 2020 in a virtual conference setting during the week of December 7, 2020, with events for growers, handlers, and industry partners running throughout the week.

The agenda will include educational sessions, social gatherings, an exhibit hall, and poster sessions, as in the past. The virtual setting also will present new opportunities for attendees, exhibitors and sponsors, including the flexibility to participate in an educational session in the morning, work in the orchard in the afternoon, and attend networking events throughout the day.

Given current restrictions on large gatherings in California and ongoing uncertainty around when such gatherings will be permitted, the Almond Board decided to halt plans to return to Cal Expo for a second year to avoid making financial commitments that could not be recouped if cancelled at a later date.

MEETINGS which is critical to the success of the Conference. ABC plans to return to Sacramento in December 2021 at the new Sacramento Convention Center, set to open early next year. “Shifting to a virtual conference was the only viable option at this time given the current uncertainty caused by the global pandemic,” said Richard Waycott, president and CEO of the Almond Board. “Going virtual will ensure we are able to gather with our friends and colleagues from around the world in a truly global event.” And he added:”We are working hard on our virtual conference - TAC20. Fortunately, we have a very good events management partner and we have been able to participate in many virtual conferences in recent months to learn best practices. We are thinking this year’s virtual conference will be able to reach many more people than our in-person conference and will teach us how to use a combination of in-person and virtual conference venues in the future.” The virtual setting also will allow ABC to bring in top notch speakers from any location without the time commitment required to travel and speak in person. Educational sessions will be recorded, allowing attendees from around the world to participate from any time zone on their own schedule.

The Corona crisis has hit Koelnmesse, like the entire trade fair industry, with great force. Since the beginning of March and until the end of October, none of our own events have taken place in Cologne. As things stand today, we expect a drop in sales and profits in the triple-digit million range for 2020.

Even though we are facing the crisis from a strong position after the record year 2019, when sales exceeded 400 million euros for the first time, we are still working on the re-launch of the Cologne trade fairs. It is eminently important not only for us, but also for our exhibitors and visitors and their industries.

MEETINGS perform this function under the given hygiene standards and in the interests of the health of all those involved - exhibitors, visitors and our employees. In view of our responsibility towards our partners and their industries, we decided early on to cancel our events. Our employees have been working from their home offices since mid-March, unless their presence in the exhibition centre is necessary to keep contacts to a minimum. Like all trade fair companies, we are using the instrument of short-time working to compensate for the losses. Nevertheless, we are preparing with full speed for the reopening of Koelnmesse events - first in digital formats, then again on site. Digital building blocks for hybrid events In a first step, we developed a purely digital concept for gamescom as blueprints for digital components of future events, which was very successful purely online at the end of August. DMEXCO @home at the end of September will be an important B2B event, also online, focusing on networking and general developments in digital marketing.
