TURKEY the price. TMO continues to play a significant role in Turkish hazelnut market by buying up excess supplies when the price drops and selling stocks when the market gets tighter. Is this a good long term strategy? The current export price is reasonable comparing to other nuts – almonds, cashews, macadamias etc. Our problem here in Turkey is inflation. Inflation in the agriculture in Turkey is higher than the average inflation. The cost of fertilizer, agrochemicals and processing costs is rising faster than general inflation. This is why there is pressure on the government to set a minimum in-shell price. The industry wants to decrease the risk to lose farmers – it is an economic, but also a social decision. If you do not keep these farmers in the area, if they move to the cities we will face bigger problems. That is why the government is entering the market from time to time. What other challenges is the Turkish industry facing in the near future? There is a structural challenge in the industry: For example, almond growers, processors and sellers in California are often the same company. They have industrialized almond production with maximum efficiency. In Turkey the industry is fragmented. There are over 450,000 hazelnut farming families in the biggest production region alone.

¿Al borde de una guerra comercial?
The Chinese implemented the wide-ranging tariffs on food exports, and some metals by mid August in reaction to the Trump administration increasing tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum exports, and an earlier US tariff on Chinese solar panels. Items on the tariff list include many grown locally, and some of the region’s top crops.
Food and agricultural products represent 105 out of the 128 tariff items listed by China. Most of the food items are charged with 15%. A recent US Department of Agriculture report estimated that the tariffs would impact US$2 bn in food exports. By the end of August China announced it is considering tariffs of 25 percent on 108 more products, including row crops such as soybeans, corn, sorghum and wheat, as well as tobacco, beef, airplanes, passenger vehicles and a long list of industrial chemicals.

Those include almonds, apples, pears, hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios, figs, grapefruit, Clementine oranges, limes, oranges, fresh grapes, raisins, watermelonsd, cantaloupes, cherries, peaches, plums, strawberries, dates and wine. All of those are grown locally, and some are major cash crops in the region. Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley almond growers exported two-thirds of their crop last year, according to Almond Board of California. China was the third-largest export market, buying 150 million pounds of almonds. Exports of almonds to China were worth about US$500 m last year, according to the Almond Alliance of California, an industry trade group, based in Modesto. “It is unclear if the additional tariff will impact consumption demands from China,” Elaine Trevino, the Alliance’s president said in a statement: the almond industry is proud of ist success in global markets. The Pecan Surge is coming. Who is ready?

Nevertheless global production is about to double. The Clipper talked to Bruce Caris, who joined the pecan industry in 2000 and currently serves as Chief Operating Officer for the Green Valley Pecan Company. During his time in the industry, he has served as a Board Member and Chair of the National Pecan Shellers Association and is currently the Vice Chairman of the American Pecan Council.

For a long time the pecan business used to be a growing, but rather quiet business without many surprises. Is this changing? It will change dramatically in the near future.
USA are starting to plant pecans for example South Africa could produce seventy to eighty million pounds by 2025 from the reports that I see. And global marketing patterns have changed as well: Since 2000 China has become a major consumer of pecans like they have with many different tree nuts but in the past six years China has taken anywhere from twenty to thirty percent of the entire U.S. crop. So I think as an industry we have to look at creating awareness – and demand growth because the supply is growing around the world. And people in many countries still don’t know what a pecan is. Please tell us a little bit about the impact of China as a client. Before 2000 - which is when China entered the market the price for in-shell pecans at the farm gate had stayed fairly level and within the same range since 1970 - so for thirty years. When China came in the prices stepped up. Twenty years ago the majority of all pecans grown in the world were handled by the US processors and one or two processors in Mexico. When China came in there was a whole new resource of capital and it just it raised the prices.

Las pacanas son muy nutritivas, con alto contenido en antioxidantes... tenemos que contar esto y no hemos podido aún por falta de voz. about a third of the US crop - western Texas, Arizona and New Mexico grow about half and the other states the rest. Water is pretty good in our growing regions - it’s not an issue. We do have orchards in Arizona which is a desert but there’s very good groundwater. I don’t think there will be challenges like with almonds. When you look into northern Mexico it is a different picture. Mexico is now growing almost half of the world’s pecans now, the same amount as in the US if not a little more. The main growing regions Sonora and Chihuahua are the two northernmost States. Both areas are very rich in agricultural history and there’s a lot of pecans being grown there. Now there are water issues particularly in Chihuahua. Chihuahua is very dependent on a couple of reservoirs that they fill in winter and with rains. There are some challenges because that area has been in a drought for quite some time. But still with the drought challenges a lot of new acreage has been created in Mexico. From a

In South Africa major growing regions are in the three rivers area, pecans have replaced many citrus plantations in the last years. In that particular area the water is good as long as it’s not going to be diverted down for the cities. My understanding is that there is a real commitment by farmers to expand the acreage. How is the pecan industry evolving in the US? A lot of plants have been built in the last 20 years – state of the art. Historically there were a lot of ‘mom and pop’ places – and they grew from having 2-3 crackers and

Ambas áreas son muy ricas en historia agrícola y allí se cultivan muchas pacanas. well as what the new bearing acres look like. So there’s a lot of uncertainty in a dynamic environment and I think that’s where you always have to put on your hat of caution. And be very careful we feel that as a as a company you know we’re vertically integrated where we grow pecans and then we process pecans. Last year we saw pecans at seven dollars a pound and walnuts were at three dollars and fifty cents a pound. That’s a dangerous gap for the pecan industry because when we want to

With disastrous weather conditions Argentina suffered lower harvests in 2016 and 2017, the acreage in Argentina will decline, production to rise with slightly lower stocks. US acreage and production have stabilized at this high level. US industry members seemed willing to share and collaborate on promoting prunes globally to boost the modest growth figures.
What are the reasons for the less than modest development? Asking the various industry members, there were different answers that could be summarized as follows.
1. Potential growth markets turned negative: In the last 4 years deliveries to Europe, China, Brazil and Russia declined – for different reasons. 2. There is a lack collaboration and joint promotion to boost demand. Christian Amblard made it clear with a very short statement: NO PROMOTION = NO MARKET. This problem does not seem to go away anytime soon: There is no incentive for suppliers from the US, Chile, France, Australia, Italy and other countries to coordinate marketing, even plantings, harvest schedules, prices and stocks. The prune industry would benefit

As Amblard stated in one of his presentations: “The competition between two co‐leaders may freeze the efforts of market development, each country legitimately fearing that the other one will take possession of their investments.” Nobody seems to be in charge to offer solutions for the whole industry. Suppliers, processors and other industry members should work together. The question is how. 3. The health aspects of prunes are not well known or proven. Only the American Prune Industry has been working hard to get results from clinical studies. Eurasian Balkans in a vicious circle
Los Balcanes Euroasiáticos en el círculo vicioso
by Oleg Nikishenkov, Clipper Russia, Moscow
por Oleg Nikishenkov, Clipper Rusia, Moscú
In his book ‘The Grand Chessboard’, Zbigniew Brzezinski called this region “Eurasian Balkans”. Indeed, the Caucasus and Central Asia, these former Soviet territories, bordering the two seas, resembles the Balkans in terms of geographical, climatic and even historical characteristics. And they could have, as it used to be in the times of the Russian Empire and the USSR, played a role of a huge fruit and nut garden for cold, huge and rich Russia. However, for many reasons it never happened.
Thousands of hectares of walnut and fruit plantations stretching in the territories between the Black and Caspian seas obviously gave up a competitive struggle for the Russian market to Turkey, North Africa, China and even Latin America, which is many thousands of kilometers away from the big market. Sergei Khayesh, CEO of the St. Petersburg based Agroimpex company quite accurately explained this phenomenon by the fact that these former southern republics of the Soviet

Union failed to establish stable production and civilized and safe logistic corridors. And where there is no stability, there is no way to continue using intensive farming. Nuts in the region are tasty, natural and ecologically pure, but on the other hand, they are still being grown by handicraft. Small private local family farmers remain principal labor force and producers. Exporters still want to work with Russia But one way or another this strange situation when Russia has huge nut orchards right on its southern borders but is not able to use them for import substitution plays on hand of those exporters, who still want to work with Russia and believe in this market. “Russia itself has only about a bit more than two hundred thousand hectares of walnut and hazelnut orchards, which are cultivated by modern industrial methods. It’s about 15 thousand tons of hazelnut per year, and it’s nothing for such a market.

RUSSIA And on top of this logistics is quite insecure: on the roads, market participants say, one can meet with all sorts of problems, from unjustified fines and inspections of local traffic police to ambushes of criminal groups of extortionists. Such a disorder and chaos strange to see in the land, where dictator of all times Joseph Stalin was born. Some entrepreneurs also complain about the constant changes in the rules of the game. Elena Klimenko, general director of the Mir Orekhov (the Walnut World) nut company from Moscow, who tried to import products from the region first, but then refused and switched to China, said that the logistics there were too complicated. To the problem of local extortion, it is necessary to add unpredictability in the management decisions of local authorities, customs, carriers and other structures that provide logistical support.

RUSSIA predictability, it is important that the situation can be calculated in advance”, the CEO of the Mir Orekhov company said. Year-to-year decline in nut consumption The Russian market faces a short, but permanent year-to-year decline in consumption in nut segment. Analysts believe the decline reflects the weakening of the ruble issues: after all, imports are tied to hard currency. But Turkey even in the worst times managed to get a fifth of the Russian market of nuts, now when things between two countries are back to normal, the share of Turkey continues to grow. Among other things, it means that currency isn’t such a decisive issue for the Russian importers. But the question is if they import from Turkey, why not include Abkhazia in its logistic corridors, these two countries seem to be so close to each other if we look at the world map, so, maybe Turkey could drag the region into a civilized trade? And realistically, there could be only one answer, why this is not happening: such a scenario is completely unprofitable for groups that control walnut pickers in Gali and other places, and neither Russia or Georgia nor local authorities can create civilized routes from this region. All these problems pushed costs of logistics from

Many reside hopes on a giant logistics project “One Belt-One Way”, initiated by China, striving to establish a land corridor to the European Union. Its parameters remind the famous Great Silk Road from Europe to China, and the project is truly gigantic.
