hit trail When The Cliffs’ ever-popular member-organized hiking club gets together, there’s always adventure afoot.

Bruce Jacobson likes to hike. He and his trusted companion, Cooper, a short-haired German pointer, have hit the trails together in 15 states and walked, by Bruce’s estimation, more than 1,500 miles.

But it wasn’t until he moved to The Cliffs at Mountain Park that Bruce found the perfect place to embrace his passion. “Moving here has had a really profound effect on my life. We have four seasons, and you can be outside in all of them. I can’t imagine a better place to enjoy them.”

Which is what led him to begin thinking about starting a hiking club. After conferring with a friend, Ken Rice, Bruce decided to try to organize a group of like-minded neighbors to join him on a monthly excursion to explore the abundant wonders that surround them at The Cliffs.

An email was met with overwhelming response and Bruce and his wife Ann were soon leading a group to the tallest waterfall in South Carolina, the majestic 420-foot Raven Cliff Falls in Caesars Head State Park.

The group decided to pass the leadership baton to a different couple for each hike. That couple would be responsible for logistics and gathering information about points of interest, from the history of the area to the flora and fauna they’d encounter along the trail. They also decided that to accommodate everyone, each hike would offer different degrees of difficulty and distance.

So many folks showed up for the trip David and Diane Sontag planned to Lake Jocassee that pontoons were needed to take the group to the trailhead. Diane, who along with fellow hiker Robin Coseo is a certified master naturalist, led the group on a 4.5-mile trek along the Foothills Trail. There they were met by pontoons and guides who took them on a tour of the lake and its staggering collection of waterfalls.

“This land is often characterized as the land of waterfalls,” Ken explains. “And like notches on a belt, it’s about what waterfalls you’ve seen and what you need to see. It’s just a part of the incredible ecosystem we have here. There’s more plant life in these mountains than anywhere in the Western Hemisphere.”

Closer to home, Ken and his wife Lorraine led the group on an exploration of some of Mountain Park’s 8.5 miles of trails. The group met at a trailhead, hiked about 2.5 miles to the Pavilion, and had lunch while the Rices gave a lesson on distinguishing between the rhododendrons and mountain laurel that are so prevalent here.

Ken says that when he and Lorraine came to The Cliffs, his passion was golf, hers was hiking. That paradigm has shifted.

“The Cliffs,” he says, “is a wellness and state-of-mind community.

Our group is a testament to the vibrancy of life here.”

As for Bruce, when he and Cooper aren’t hiking, he’s out with a group doing a daily three-mile walk around The Cliffs at Mountain Park, wearing out a lot of hiking shoes, exploring and experiencing the bountiful wonders of nature.

She uses it, she says, to concentrate either on her work or on one of the 15 local artists whom she exhibits and mentors, applying her experience in the corporate world to the business of art. Indeed, the Greenville native has always expressed herself artistically, earning a degree from Columbia College in dance, and performing in more than 20 Little Theatre productions before finding a home for her painting and the expression of what she feels and experiences. Happily, a paintbrush is always nearby.

Whatever’s playing at the Greenville Little Theatre is sure to illicit its share of bravos and standing ovations, which is why the GLT performs for more people than any other theatre company in the state of South Carolina. And while behind the scenes there’s a “let’s put on a show” quality to GLT – Associate Artistic Director Sam McCalla, who made his stage debut here at the age of five, now acts, directs, and even occasionally sells tickets – the quality of the work is most definitely Broadway bound.

Once you do, there’s no turning back. Of course, we could say the same thing about their scones, brick oven pizza or a dozen other items at this must-stop bakery, grocery, café, and butchery on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Opened in 2011 by best friends and dedicated foodies Jacqueline Oliver and Mary Walsh, the café goes to incredible lengths to serve the freshest, straight-from-the-dirt veggies, artisan cheeses, and meats that local farmers produce. So if you’re about to hike or bike the scenic trail that lends its name to this culinary paradise, stop in at the café. But be careful with the Stecca.

It’s their opportunity to hear gifted young musicians perform alongside a distinguished faculty and some of classical music’s most celebrated names, including Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Frederica von Stade.

A dizzying program of works from chamber to cabaret to large-scale orchestra performances and fully staged operas are performed under the artistic direction of conductor Keith Lockhart, music director of the Boston Pops and BBC Orchestra, and himself a Brevard graduate.

The Brevard Music Center has been embraced by residents of The Cliffs, but perhaps by none more than Katie Loeb Schwab of The Cliffs at Walnut Cove.

“But beyond the performances, we’re an educational institute that helps train the most talented students in America and from around the world. They will go on to become important soloists, they will populate our finest orchestras, and they will teach our children and grandchildren, introducing them to the international language of music,” says Mark Weinstein, the Center’s president and CEO.

A member of the Center’s Board, Katie grew up in Brevard. Her parents were active at the Center in the 1940s, and she remembers attending concerts there as a child.

“I remember being bored like any kid, but in time the power of the music moved me, and I fell in love with it,” she says.

Though they have lived in a number of places, Katie and her husband Mark always wanted to return to the area, so when they retired they chose The Cliffs.

And, shortly after settling in, Weinstein asked if she’d like to join the Board, focusing on developing relationships between new residents and the Center.

“It took me all of two seconds to agree. Candidly, what I bring is my love for the history of the Center and my desire to help others get to know it and love it as I do,” she explains.

A Harmonic Convergence Happily, others at The Cliffs share her passion.

When opera lovers Susan and Tim Butts moved to Walnut Cove from Manhattan, they thought they might be leaving the joys of the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall behind. Then, thanks to a chance meeting with Mark Weinstein, they discovered the Brevard Music Center.

“We were flabbergasted to find we weren’t missing any musical culture at all,” Susan says.

Indeed, the Butts were so impressed with the program that they have provided scholarships for two singers and hosted more than 40 people at their home for a private recital to introduce others to the Center.

It was the Center that helped Debera and Jack Millstein find their way to The Cliffs. Friends of Mark Weinstein’s from Pittsburgh, they offered to host a meet-and-greet with Keith Lockhart in Naples, FL. At the time, they were deciding where to build their summer home, and after meeting several people from The Cliffs, including Katie and her husband Mark, they decided it was the ideal choice for them. Now in their new home in Walnut Cove, they have been helping with fundraising and plan to make the Brevard Music Center a routine part of their lives.

members’ favorite, particularly with The Cliffs Valley Ladies Golf Association, the largest group of female golfers in our membership.

“Favoring the left side of the fairway is ideal, but you must avoid the lateral hazard on the extreme left. If you’re fortunate enough to find the fairway, your approach shot is to a green that tilts toward the player and provides an opportunity for birdie. You must be careful and avoid the L-shaped bunker guarding the right side of the green.”

According to Brian Peeples, “The 6th can be quite intimidating.

From the tee, the fairway looks difficult to find, though there’s much more room than you think. However, it’s hard to trick your mind into trusting that because of the significant waste bunkering down the hole’s right side. So finding the fairway is key because a shot hit into that bunker can leave you with an unpredictable lie. Then navigating over the river to the green on the other side of the river’s bank on your approach is no cinch either. Committing to your shot is crucial, and par is an excellent score.”

while you navigate its bentgrass tees, fairways, and greens through elevation changes, slopes, and ravines. South Carolina’s only mountaintop course, the 12th hole of this Tom Jackson design is one of Brian’s favorites.

“From an elevated tee, this hole has three ponds down the left side, something that you certainly have to be aware of on your tee shot. And there’s a well-positioned fairway bunker on the right. After you position yourself, ideally favoring the right side of the fairway, you once again have to navigate a right-hand greenside bunker and water short and left.

Par here is a very solid score.”

He designed it as a somewhat narrow hole that, while it’s guarded

by Lake Keowee on the right and well-positioned fairway bunkers on the left, still provides more than enough room for your tee shot.

Your short iron approach is to a small green guarded by bunkers short left and right. To further challenge you, Lake Keowee wraps around the back side of the green and comes into play for a shot going long.”

Uniquely designed for golfers of all ages and skill levels, Keowee Springs incorporates three loops of six holes and a set of family tees so you can play six, 12 or 18 holes. And while these courses are favorites for beginners, it features one of the top 50 golf practice facilities in the United States.

“The 16th hole is another fantastic layout by Tom Fazio with large greens and expansive bunkers,” Brian notes.

“The challenging 16th is the only hole that moves significantly left to right off the tee. You have to be cautious with your tee shot and avoid the large bunker complex left of the fairway that tends to come into play quite often. The right side of the fairway also has a bunker that can catch a well-struck tee shot making its way through the fairway. Your second shot is typically going to be a mid- to long-iron into a well-protected green with a collection of three bunkers short and short left.

Par is certainly your friend here.”

Recognized by the PGA Tour as the only championship course to debut in tournamentready condition, this Jack Nicklaus work of art is the site of the members’ favorite Walnut Cup, a yearly tournament open to men and women of all ages and abilities. The tradition includes “Trash Talk Week” and a year’s worth of bragging rights for the winning team.

“Walnut Cove’s 9th hole provides a strong finish to the front nine. The tee shot is demanding, forcing you to keep the ball down the right side to avoid the left fairway bunker. Once you’ve positioned your tee ball, you’re faced with a challenging uphill shot to a somewhat shallow green that’s protected by a greenside bunker in front. A fade shot is ideal coming into this green and walking away with par is a very good score.”

KEOWEE FALLS Yardage: 5,154 – 7,171 Rating: 69.1 – 75.6

Considered the most challenging of The Cliffs’ courses, this Jack Nicklaus design is ranked

among Golfweek’s “50 Best New Courses” and Golf Digest’s “Best in the State,” which makes it the natural home course for the Clemson Invitational, the premier event of one of the NCAA’s most storied programs.

“This par 4 is protected off the tee with a large fairway bunker on the left while Falls Creek, which snakes its way along the right, often snatches tee shots. Nicklaus provides an ample landing area from the tee, and a nicely struck shot sets you up for a fun approach over Falls Creek, which meanders in front of the multi-tiered green. Finding the right tier with a shorter iron can help set you up for a birdie, but as with any Nicklaus hole, walking away with par is also comforting.”

Ever watch a film of Jackson Pollock painting? He’d dip a brush in paint, throw it at a blank canvas, then choose another color, and another, until suddenly a blank canvas became a masterpiece to behold.

So it is with the mixologists who practice their art at The Cliffs. They take a spirit to start, a splash of liqueur, a bit of a mixer, and then something unexpected — say apple or cinnamon or vanilla, perhaps even an element such as fire — and suddenly what was an empty glass becomes a masterpiece to imbibe.

ANNIE TACKETT, for example, has been creating cocktails at The Cliffs at Valley for the past two years. While her signature drink, Annie’s Cosmo (see recipe), continues to grow in popularity, she is always thinking creatively, finding fresh ways to put a new twist on a member’s preferred cocktail.

“My challenge is to intrigue members and keep them engaged. You can’t let yourself get comfortable and offer them the same old, same old all the time,” she says.

JOHN HUMPHRIES, who came to The Cliffs at Glassy from a popular Greenville restaurant, enjoys creating specialty drinks for special occasions. When Glassy’s International Dining Club got together recently for their monthly gathering, he created something unique using a South African liqueur to accompany their dinner.

“Some people have a particular drink, others are more adventurous. While my signature is a Sidecar with a flamed orange peel garnish (see recipe), I like the Sazerac. It’s the first American cocktail and uses rye, absinthe, Peychaud’s Bitters and a sugar cube. I’ve gotten some members to try it, and it’s growing in popularity.”

bby Delgoffe conquers wind and water on a wakeboard, bending them to her bidding, performing seemingly impossible moves and making them look easy. But wakeboarding’s biggest challenge, according to Abby, The Cliffs’ director of wakeboarding and the woman ranked 12th in the sport in the world, aren’t the leaps, flips, and jumps. It’s not to be intimidated. “With the right teacher, you can get up on your first try. I’ve taught everyone from five to 75, and I’ve had them doing 180-degree turns, small jumps, and flips. One of my best pupils is 11-year-old Lauren Coughlan, who’s on a competitive track.”

Abby’s enthusiasm for the sport — and Lake Keowee — is contagious. “Lake life at The Cliffs is one of the coolest experiences you can have, and I want everyone to enjoy it. That’s why I’m hoping people not only come for my clinics but for the paddleboarding, boating, kayaking — just to get out on the gorgeous water and enjoy one of the most scenic spots I’ve ever ridden.” That’s convincing testimony from a woman who’s competed everywhere from Australia and Japan to Austria, Portugal, and Canada as well as all over the United States.

Competing is in Abby’s blood. She started as a gymnast at six and transitioned to wakeboarding in college. After graduating from Michigan State with honors, she obtained her chiropractic license and practices in Orlando, FL, specializing in sports chiropractic when she’s not competing or teaching, helping others to experience the pure, elemental joy of being on the board.

“Food is the foundation of everything, so cooking, eating, it should all be a joyful experience,” Senior Executive Chef Victor Carducci exclaims with the same passion he brings to his cooking — and to the wildly popular cooking classes he teaches twice monthly in his kitchen at Valley.

“People come from all seven communities … some because they love to be in the kitchen, others because they want to learn new dishes for entertaining. But most, I think, come because they love to eat and to be with friends,” says Chef Victor Carducci.

Because Chef believes in everyone having a good time, every three-hour class begins with a cocktail or Spritz at the bar before moving into the kitchen. There, an explosion of activity by Chef’s team in preparation for that night’s dinner goes on all around the eager students, lending a behind-the-scenes reality — and charm — to the event.

For the next two hours, these dedicated foodies might get a hands-on lesson in making pasta or pizza, rolling sushi or watching a demonstration of everything they’ll ever need to know about chicken, from breaking it down, storing it, and brining it, to grilling it or making a chicken pot pie.

The best part: students eat the result of their labors, whether it be a sampling of mouthwatering French pastries, the Chef’s native Italian, or his favorite, Vietnamese.

“I don’t usually give recipes, only ingredients,” Chef explains, “because I’m trying to put the class in touch with the food. You should be able to feel the right consistency of dough with your hands. It’s not something you measure, you feel it, and in time it becomes second nature.”

Before coming to The Cliffs 17 years ago, Victor earned an A.O.S. culinary arts degree from Johnson & Wales University and graduated valedictorian. He worked with a two-time James Beard Award-winning chef in Denver. But it was learning how to make pasta in his grandmother’s kitchen when he was six that began his love affair with good food — a love that embraces all who attend his classes and dine at his table.

RAVE REVIEWS Members of The Cliffs have always been ardent supports of the Flat Rock Playhouse.

And for good reason: the Playhouse is one of the country’s finest regional theaters. Will and Lynn Penny also have a strong connection to the Playhouse; they met there when Lynn, then a young actress from Los Angeles, appeared in a play directed by Burt Reynolds. Will was Reynolds’s assistant and, as happens with ingénues, they fell in love and married.

Lynn became the theater’s director of development then left to join The Cliffs corporate team. Naturally, she introduced her leading man to The Cliffs seven communities. He soon joined as a corporate member.

of Tom Fazio’s, the Nicklaus-designed course at Walnut Cove is his favorite. And lunch and dinners at the Clubhouses are also frequently on the playbill. But it’s the wine tastings with sommelier Eric Cooperman that are the hottest ticket in town for the Pennys.

Happily, it’s also been a boon to Will’s business, one division of which specializes in personal insurance for the affluent. As people at The Cliffs have gotten to know him, they’ve become clients.

“Everyone I met was warm, welcoming, friendly and genuine — and interesting — people you wanted to get to know better. I knew I wanted to be a part of it,” Will says.

The family has always stayed close to the Playhouse.

They never miss a performance by their 14-year-old twins, Clancy and Samantha, who are frequent performers. Their love of theater also extends to daughter Molly, 21, a musical theater major at the University of Alabama. Only Caroline-Daly, 18, has no plans to tread the boards. She’s thinking about a career in pediatric oncology.

Now he starts every day at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove Wellness Center before heading into his office at the Penny Insurance Agency. He enjoys taking clients out to play golf — though a friend

But while the couple has no plans to return to the stage, it will be a long time before the curtain comes down on their love affair with either the theater or The Cliffs.

“GOLF IS MORE THAN A GAME,” is how

Carrie McClenaghan, the 2nd assistant pro at The Cliffs at Mountain Park, describes her passion. “It’s about friendship, it’s about the adrenaline rush you get after a great shot, and the high fives that keep you coming back to what is the toughest, hardest sport there is.”

Carrie believes that golf is about a lot more than lowering your handicap. “It’s the process of trying to reach the goals you set for yourself and the confidence and discipline you gain as you play. That’s why I’m thrilled to see more women at The Cliffs taking up the sport all the time.”

It’s in that role that Carrie oversees Ladies Day on Tuesdays. She organizes two groups of women: the experienced 18-holers for whom she organizes a variety of team-formatted games, and the 9-holers with whom she plays three days a month, teaching everything from the rules of the game to tending the flag to how to hit the ball.

Carrie also organizes the Ladies Playaround at Mountain Park. The Playaround puts together teams of women from the different communities with the goal of helping those ladies who play network as well as introduce them to the different courses. More than 100 women participated this past year and the event keeps growing in popularity.

” They attend because they love the game, and they love the camaraderie. ” She also gives lessons to both men and women. There are those whom she sees regularly and those who come in for a small tune-up. Working with folks, helping them improve their game — and their pleasure playing it — is one of her special joys.

THIS GIRL’S GOT GAME. Carrie, who grew up just

down the road from Mountain Park in Greenville, SC, was introduced to the game by her dad as a seventh grader.

By the time she was ready for college her game was good enough to earn her a scholarship at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. She thought about a career in counseling but loved the game too much to give it up. Happily, the Dowlings, the parents of a friend she played with in college and who are members at The Cliffs, recommended her for a position as an assistant-in-training. Carrie began her career doing everything from washing carts and answering the phone to arranging tournaments.

Not long after, Carrie entered the PGA Apprentice Program and is presently on track to get her membership. A couple of years ago she became an assistant pro at The Cliffs at Mountain Park, working with Pro Mike Williams and 1st Assistant Pro Dane Barrick. She loves the job and hopes to be here for a long time.

“I want to be an ambassador for the game I love,” she says.

Watching her hit a ball 260 yards straight down the fairway makes you believe it’s a goal she’s sure to attain.

embers at The Cliffs have always been aware that they are part of a larger community, the one outside its gates. So they’ve made it their mission to make a difference in the lives of their less fortunate neighbors. And the difference they’re making has been profound.

Take for example the 144 households that make up The Cliffs at Walnut Cove Members Association (WCMA). The association has retired attorneys who volunteer legal services to aid the homeless, and volunteers who work part time at a local food bank, teach and tutor in local schools, and collaborate with the Humane Society to help find Cliffs members’ new best friends. And WCMA fosters a spirit of giving by organizing social events.

The Cliffs Mountain Region (Glassy, Valley and Mountain Park) and the Lake Region (Keowee Vineyards, Falls and Springs) both participate in The Cliffs Resident Outreach (CRO) which focuses on youngsters, providing them through a network of local schools with everything from nutritional and early childhood development programs to school supplies and family resource assistance, as well as funds for books, science clubs, and field trips. The CRO has also purchased computers for Bridges to a Brighter Future’s students and instruments for band members who can’t afford them..

To make all this possible both nonprofit groups hold annual fundraisers that have become among their communities’ most highly anticipated events. Then each determines how it will spend the generous contributions of its donors.

The CRO’s annual dinner this year was attended by nearly 300 members and raised more than $200,000. The evening included both a silent and live auction.

There was a break in the bidding to make a plea for the CRO’s Fund the Need effort, which gave five youngsters the opportunity to attend a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program at Wake Forest University.

This year WCMA held its Weekend of Giving — a weekend that has morphed into a five-day event thanks to the overwhelming generosity of donors and sponsors. It began with a dinner and live auction on Friday night. On Saturday the group held a clothing drive to help the homeless of Buncombe County. On Sunday members enjoyed a tennis tournament and poolside barbecue, and on Monday members were treated to a performance by the Flat Rock Playhouse Youth Program, one of the group’s grantees. It all ended with a golf tournament filled with team and individual fundraising events.

Since their inception, the two groups have each raised close to $1 million, of which virtually every dollar has gone to support their causes — causes that make a difference not only for those who receive but also for those who give.

hen Joe and Peg Moreland decided to build their home at The Cliffs, one of the architectural touches they requested was an observation deck over the dining room.

It also helps to have a project manager on the job like Andy Dickerson, who both the Morelands agree, “should be nominated as project manager of the millennium.”

“We call it the Owl’s Nest,” Joe explains, “because an owl can turn its head 270 degrees and the deck gives us a 270-degree western view of Table Rock. It’s wonderful to climb the spiral staircase that leads to it at the start of the day, or to watch the sunset in the evening.”

For the Morelands, one of the big attractions of The Cliffs at Mountain Park was the opportunity to be a part of a growing community. That’s why they’ve volunteered to become co-heads of Mountain Park’s welcoming committee, hosting an open house twice a year to welcome new neighbors.

Their private getaway is only one of the wise decisions the couple made when they decided to move from their home in Lake Forest, IL, to The Cliffs at Mountain Park. Another, according to the couple, was choosing Dillard-Jones Builders as their design-build firm.

Peg is also volunteering with The Cliffs Resident Outreach (CRO), filling backpacks for local school children. She is also a co-chair of the group’s fundraiser, which hopes to raise enough money to fulfill the school’s needs for everything from computers to mentors.

“We were building from afar, and we wanted a single point of contact that could provide all the services we would need,” is the reason Peg gives for choosing Dillard-Jones, a member of The Cliffs Preferred Builder Program.

For Joe, one of the major attractions is the vibrant lifestyle The Cliffs affords. An explorer at heart, he’s joined the hiking group and does quite a bit of mountain biking as part of his quest to discover and get to know the area.

“We’ve got a great deal of experience working with families who are building from afar,” Tom Dillard says. “It’s enabled us to develop a design-build process that ensures our entire team is aware of our clients’ needs and wants throughout the build, and we do everything we can to accommodate them.”

The couple is also enjoying getting to know Greenville and its myriad attractions. “The transformation the city has gone through over the last 20 years is nothing short of phenomenal,” Joe says.

To accomplish that goal, Dillard-Jones employs new technologies, such as Buildertrend software that provides clients, regardless of their location, with clear, real-time updates about the work being done.

They golf, hike, bike, and play tennis among other things. But whatever they do, wellness is just an integral part of life here.”

“OUR JOB IS TO FACILITATE that healthy, active lifestyle,” says Mountain Park personal trainer Eli Cothran. “And we’ve got an incredible range of equipment so members can find a program that they enjoy, one that provides them more mobility, flexibility, and strength.”

That means employing some truly unique equipment with breakout technology that stretches the boundaries of what you usually think of as possible in a gym — in addition to all the usual aerobics and strength-training equipment that you’d expect to find in any state-of-the-art facility.

Whether it’s canoeing, kayaking, wakeboarding, scuba diving, fishing, or paddleboarding — her favorite water sport — there’s no better place to indulge her passion than the 26 miles of Lake Keowee’s pristine waters, according to this outdoor adventurer.

When her feet are back on solid ground, Anna Claire enjoys nothing more than exploring the myriad of mountain trails in and around The Cliffs.

So every month she meticulously plans a variety of hikes of different distances and difficulties.

Her personal favorite is Opossum Creek Falls, where the reward for a two-mile trek is a simply spectacular 75-foot waterfall.

“Besides being fun, it’s one of the most stressrelieving, relaxing adventures you can have outdoors.” Her enthusiasm for the sport — and the lake — is contagious, which is one reason why the monthly Intro to Paddleboarding class she teaches at The Cliffs at Keowee Springs is so popular with members.

Watching the changing leaves burst into an abundance of color in fall, then bloom with new life again in spring before summer’s sea of green, is something she feels everyone should experience up close. And so, to introduce members to the splendors of the natural world and give them the chance to explore some of what surrounds them

here, she chooses different trailheads for every walk in the woods. Over the course of the month, there’s sure to be a hike close to each of The Cliffs’ seven communities.

A recent graduate, with honors, of Clemson, Anna Claire concentrated in community recreation, sports, and camp management. It’s a natural choice for someone who grew up camping and canoeing with family. Now, as part of The Cliffs family, she hopes to inspire in members the same love and wonder she has for the great outdoors.

Beth and William Darnall’s trust in Michael Condon, their project manager from Bergeron Custom Homes, was absolute. So when the original plans called for stucco columns that would greet you when you drove up to the house and Michael suggested that wooden beams would look better, the Darnalls agreed. Michael, a master carpenter, built them.

The Darnalls visited six of the seven Cliffs communities before deciding on The Cliffs at Mountain Park. Then they hired architect Garry Price of Design Elite. Beth’s only instruction, “DESIGN SOMETHING DIFFERENT.” “Garry would come out to the property at various times of the day and sit on the lawn watching how the wind came off the mountains and where the sun sat in the sky at different times of day. Then he had me fill out a 17-page questionnaire before he began working on the design. The result was a house that incorporates lots of windows and a wraparound porch that capitalizes on our views of the Paris and Blue Ridge Mountains.”

Beth describes those views with a wonder-of-it-all in her voice and a sparkle in her eye: “EVERY DAY IS A NEW PAINTING.” While building from afar can be challenging, for the Darnalls the experience was a pleasure.

Jason Bergeron, a long-time part of The Cliffs Preferred Builder Program, provided the Darnalls with a timeline. When Beth visited, Jason would have an itinerary ready that made the most of her time. Both Jason and Michael attended every meeting with her.

“After building close to 100 homes at The Cliffs, we understand that beyond the quality of the home, it’s crucial that the experience our clients have is a 100 percent satisfying,” Bergeron says.

The Darnalls are certainly satisfied. And now, happily ensconced in their new home, they’re discovering THE ART OF LIVING AT THE CLIFFS and enjoying the new paintings their views offer every day.
