his 2018-2019 school year has many changes that freshmen and returning students may not be fully aware of. This guide will quickly update the DU community about the opportunities and developments that are valuable to know about.

Construction As students may have noticed when walking across campus, the once highly populated crosswalk on Evans is closed and under construction. This is due to recent advances in the university’s The Denver Advantage plan which aims to input a new First-Year Residence hall, a Community Commons center to overtake the previous place of the Driscoll Student Center and a Pioneer Career Achievement Center.

With the closing of Driscoll, Evans is expected to be more densely populated than it’s previously been.

The construction for this pedestrian crossing aims to be larger and safer for the DU community. This is anticipated to be completed in mid-October. In the meantime, the Driscoll Bridge is still available to use and

bicyclists may use the crosswalks at University Boulevard or High Street.

Another consequence of constructing the new Community Commons, CLIE offices and student activities will now be located at “the Hub.” The small building remains on the northern end of campus and is next to the Sturm College of Law. staff to check out one of the bright yellow bikes to roam across campus.

The car sharing program, car2go— also announced earlier this year—is providing dedicated parking spaces on DU’s campus. This allows members of the DU community to get access to an affordable mobility option and utilize it for activities like heading to Cherry Creek, driving to sporting events, getting to work, driving up to the mountains and easily traveling from one side of campus to the other. To continue DU’s goal of increasing sustainability, a new transportation service was announced. Chariot is a shuttle service that is subsidized for students, faculty and staff. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., prospective riders can reserve a seat through the Chariot app and circulate around campus with its six stops.

Entertainment New to campus is the hosting of “Potted Potter – The Unathorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff.” Joining the list of performances and events hosted at the Newman center, from Sept. 18

to Sept. 23, this comedy condenses all seven Harry Potter books while maintaining a lighthearted and fun tone. Like other events at the Newman center, discounted DU campus pricing is available for employees and students when they visit the Newman Center box office.

Board members The Board of Trustees this year introduced a new chair and new members. Denise O’Leary, who has spent five years on the board, is the new chair. She has previously chaired the advancement committee and has served the executive committee, the investment committee and the nominating and governance committee. O’Leary will be replacing Doug Scrivner, who will continue to serve on the board.

The new board members include Ryan Heckman, Nancy Philips and Dan Caruso. Further information on the new members can be found at DU Newsroom.

Letter from the Editor: The campus and the Clarion, growing together

T

he 2018-2019 school year has officially begun, and with that, the Clarion is up and running for yet another year. As Editor-in-Chief, I’m honored to help run an organization with nearly 120 years of history and tradition behind it, and I sincerely hope that this year brings a successful continuation of DU’s student newspaper.

To read a bit about what Executive Editor Grace Carson and I hope to accomplish during our leadership, check out our co-written article from last Spring Quarter.

I still feel it important to offer a statement as the new school year begins: If it wasn’t obvious from the construction and detours overwhelming our campus, DU is changing. New offices and leaders are implementing grand plans for the future of the university, and we all find ourselves at the crux of these transitions. We at the Clarion, for example, are

losing our private office space with the demolition of Driscoll.

It would be easy to get discouraged and overwhelmed by all the restructuring, but instead, we are choosing to focus on all of the opportunities ahead.

I have already had the pleasure of meeting with and working with countless new people to coordinate our office move, and there has been incredible support from the university in accommodating the Clarion’s needs.

Although it may take some extra hard work, it feels especially important to be Editor-in-Chief at this moment in time; I have the responsibility to continue our long-standing practices while working toward a bigger and brighter future for the newspaper, and I do not take this lightly. I hope to help my dedicated staff produce a fantastic weekly newspaper this year, but I will also be constantly pursuing long-term goals that will set up future Clarion editors for

success. As DU grows, the Clarion should, too.

A change in physical space lends itself to other changes, as well. Hopefully, despite national distrust in media sources and the divisive political climate, the momentum of a new location will help achieve the goals that Grace and I set when we were first elected, and this should lead to a Clarion in which everyone at DU and beyond can feel represented, a Clarion that people recognize, trust and feel proud of.

I cannot accomplish any of this alone. Success depends on support from our staff, from our contributors and especially from you, our loyal readers.

Here’s to a year of positive growth for the university, for the Clarion and for each member of the DU community.

A few reasons to get to know Denver

T

his year, whether you have just moved here or are returning, is a good year to get to know the city of Denver. Becoming familiar with a new place is an exciting part of going to college, and this place is an especially interesting and entertaining one. Here are some reasons for getting to know Denver while you’re at DU. On the culture front, Denver is brimming with art, music, museums and theater. Tours of top-quality Broadway shows cycle through the Denver Center for the Performing Arts constantly—we get renowned musicals like “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Cats” as well as dramatic and comedic plays—and most people should be able to find something that suits their taste in the range between Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and Jim Steinman’s “Bat Out of Hell The Musical,” each of which is coming to the Buell Theater this year.

The music venues are also excellent and memorable.

There are the namesake geological wonders at Red Rocks Amphitheater, hanging chandeliers at the Fillmore and oldschool class at the Paramount.

Similarly to the variety in the theater district, you can take your pick whether to see a pop megastar at the Pepsi Center or a U2 tribute band at the Soiled Dove. If you don’t gain new

cultural knowledge and experience during your time at DU, it is not because it is lacking.

We also have an art museum, a Colorado history museum (though it’s called the History Colorado Center now,

they are good about offering free days and student prices. What is always free is Denver’s public art, of which there is a lot. We have giant dancing people and a larger-than-life dustpan and brush, we have a statue of a pile

since word reversal freshens things up), a nature and science museum, a museum of contemporary art, a zoo and a sprawling botanic garden. Each can be visited repeatedly for rotating exhibits and special events, and

and wonder and a giant blue horse that might be the devil incarnate. The city of Denver is too interesting and weird not to explore while you are here.

If you like riding public transportation, you can get most places on the light rail or the bus. Taking transit helps the environment, supports the continuation of these services and makes you a more interesting person. It is also is a good way to see more of the city, something you hopefully feel encouraged to do at this point.

On a more serious note, Denver is where you will be working, finding internships, networking and doing service work during your years of college. As a DU student, you are a part of the community, and engaging with it for your own career goals and in the service of other community members is one of the most important things you will do while you are here.

Staying isolated on campus and in classes will only give you a part of the opportunities you have here. We are at college to learn the skills that will help make our cities and communities better, more vibrant places, and to be a contributing part of a community is powerful.

You have chosen a wonderful city, and it has a lot to offer you, just as you do it. Getting to know Denver this year will be time well spent.

The pre-season Pioneers W elcome back to campus, Pioneers!

If you are new, congratulations and welcome to the number one Division I non-football school. To all returning Pioneers, welcome back. Although this school may number 12,000 total, DU is regularly honored for its commitment to athletic and academic achievement. This fall season alone, DU fields one top-ten ranked team, three projected favorites to win the Summit League Championships as well as David Carle as the new hockey coach in his first season with the Pioneers.

The Men’s Soccer team is ranked No. 2 in the Top Drawer Soccer Poll and No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.

Senior Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was named the College Soccer News Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 27, 2018, and senior transfer Moshe Perez (Shim’a, Israel) was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week for the week of Sept. 4, 2018. The strength of the team was reflected in the recruited class and the additional signing of U-20 member, freshman Gideon Davis (Barcelona, Spain). Beyond the signing class, head coach Jamie Franks also increased the Pioneers’

chances of making the NCAA Tournament by improving the strength of the schedule. This year, the Pioneers will play eight teams that made the 2017 NCAA Tournament, including three-time defending champion, Stanford. This year will prove to be an important one for the Pioneers as they seek to return to the NCAA Tournament following a shocking loss in the Summit League Championships last year.

The Women’s Soccer team is projected to win the Summit League Championships following the near doubling of the team through a large incoming freshman class and the addition of two transfers from prestigious schools, such as Clemson University. The Pioneers are also returning much of their starting 11 from last year, including the return of senior Cristiana Behnken (Ogden, Utah).

Returning sophomore and 2017 Summit League Freshman of the Year Meg Halvorson (Englewood, Colo.) looks to make a big impact on DU’s midfield line and has already been named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week for the week of Sept. 4.

The Women’s Volleyball team has also been named as a favorite to win the Summit

League Championships. They return a majority of their starting lineup, including senior Rebecca Latham (Austin, Texas) who, last year, was named to the 2017 US Collegiate National Team-China Tour. The team was recently ranked at No. 9 in Volleyball Magazine’s Mid-Major tour as of Sept. 4, jumping five spots up from a previous ranking of No. 14.

Hockey, one of the sports that DU is best known for, begins again in October. After losing seven student athletes from the 2017-2018 roster to various professional leagues, including

five to the National Hockey League, as well as former Head Coach Jim Montgomery, who is now with the Dallas Stars, the Pioneers look to a strong freshman class to make a large impact. Returning students like sophomore Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alberta) and senior captain Colin Staub (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will also be expected to lead the team to winning another Frozen Faceoff and a return trip to the Frozen Four.

Best spots to pee with ease

I

f you already pee with ease, I urge you to take a moment to reflect. It is important that you understand how privileged you are to have a restroom that is available to you wherever and

whenever you need to go, where you feel comfortable and, most importantly, safe. The fact that people need a list like this shows how hard it is for some to simply be themselves anywhere and everywhere.

Since 2014, the number of gender-neutral restrooms has increased and, according to the “University of Denver Guidelines for All-Gender Restrooms,” the university plans to implement more facil-

ities in the years to follow.

The impact of the “red zone” in college

A

s the new college year begins, students look forward to a time of discovery, adventure and growth. For students heading to college for the first time, it is the beginning of becoming independent from their families and having the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

However, the beginning of college is also the beginning of what is known as the “red zone.”

The “red zone” refers to the increase of sexual assaults on campus during a freshman’s first six weeks of school. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), more than 50 percent of sexual assaults in college occur from the months of August through November. RAINN has also reported that students are at an increased risk during the first few months of their first and second semesters.

Theories have arisen concerning what causes the “red zone.”

According to a study done by the University of Michigan, this time period overlaps with back-to-school parties, where general safety party measures, such as keeping a drink close or staying with friends, are not known, making freshman more vulnerable to sexual assault.

In the push to end sexual assault on campus, the federal government implemented the “Dear Colleague” letter that stated, if the school is aware that sexual violence has occured, they must take immediate action to “eliminate the harassment, prevent its recurrence and address its effects.” Schools

s exciting as it is to finally be in college, it is understandably stressful as well. Before you completely melt down about having to use a public shower, dealing with your new roommate sleeping in the nude or eating whatever Sodexo whipped up that day, take a moment and relax with your favorite high school-era movies.

1. “High School Musical” Are you even properly throwing back to high school if you don’t watch “High School Musical”? Not only does this movie have the boppiest songs and young Zac Efron, but it’s also a great reminder to try something new. College is all about new experiences. So, take a page from Troy Bolton’s book and go out and do something you’ve never done

were also recommended to take proactive measures to prevent sexual violence, such as education programs that address what constitutes sexual violence and the consequences of committing sexual violence as per the school’s policy.

While colleges are responding to the issue of the “red zone” and preventing further sexual violence on campus, many sexual assault prevention experts feel the traditional approach of addressing sexual violence during freshman orientations are less likely to work.

Activists feel that programs that address the issue of sexual violence focus more on how students can stay safe from sexual assault, putting the responsibility on the victim, rather than address the issue of what is clear, enthusiastic consent. Until there is a significant shift in placing

the responsibility on the perpetrators instead of the victim, there will not be a change in decreasing sexual assault on college campuses.

As a survivor of sexual violence from the age of fifteen up until now, I have seen the impact of placing responsibility on the victim only.

We are told it is our fault because of what we wear, how much we drink or that it is not sexual violence if we are in a relationship. That we were not “careful” enough. That it is okay because they say they love you. That speaking out will only be met with backlash and shame. What colleges can do now to prevent sexual violence is create an environment where students can discuss what is clear consent and teach that sexual violence is never the victim’s fault.

Students can intervene if they see someone in a dangerous situation

and help them get to safety. If someone has been assaulted, the school must take immediate action to ensure this does not happen again, whether through a Title IX investigation or recommendation to go to the law, and provide counseling for the victim.

We have progressed farther into openly discussing sexual violence, but there is still more work to be done. Colleges are homes to future generations who will impact culture, and providing a place where sexual violence and consent is openly discussed is the first step for students to shift from victim blaming to placing responsibility on the perpetrator only, and therefore decreasing sexual assault on campus.

before, whether it be trying out an intramural sport, joining a new club or auditioning for a play at your university. You never know, it could be the start of something new.

2. “The Breakfast Club” One of the biggest apprehensions about starting college can be making new friends. Fortunately, “The Breakfast Club” is a great movie to watch if you are worried about that. Though Claire, John, Allison, Andrew and Carl met in detention, there are a ton of more rule-following opportunities to meet people in college. Though you may not meet the kind of people from your old high school crowd, college is all about meeting new people, whether it be a freak or a princess.

Some good places to start are in the classrooms, by joining a club or by

simply asking to sit with someone in the dining hall. If you’re struggling with approaching people though, just think of your dorm building as a sort of “detention” and go from there.

3. “Princess Diaries” Being a college student is stressful, but being a princess who just discovered her new-found royalty is debatably more so. For those students who are starting to feel the newfound pressures that entering college brings, watch this movie to be reminded that this is definitely not the end of the world, but instead the beginning of something exciting, and dare I say, magical? Change can be stressful, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a bad thing. Hopefully by watching this classic high school-era movie, you

will not only be reminded of how awkward you looked in high school and to text your old friends, but that entering college is also an exciting new chapter of your life. Side note, if you are somehow already stressing about post-college plans, check out the sequel, “Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Wedding,” because at least you don’t have to run a whole country after college.

BONUS: “To All the Boys I Loved Before” If you’re simply feeling down in the dumps and need a movie to cheer you up, Netflix’s “To All the Boys I Loved Before,” is a great filml to start with. Wholesome, inclusive and filled with rad style, this film is sure to lift your spirits.
