Colorado gubernatorial caucus results released O

n March 6, registered Republican and Democratic voters took part in the Colorado caucus which gave an outlook into who may be the state’s gubernatorial nominees.

In the Republican Party, results were not shared since delegates were not assigned through a statewide poll. To get an idea of the support of the top four contenders— Cynthia Coffman, Victor Mitchell, Doug Robinson and Walker Stapleton—according to The Denver Post, unofficial straw polls still occurred.

The Denver Post’s article highlighted the Republican caucus that took place at Ralston Valley High School where Stapleton appeared to be the dominant candidate. For Democrats, Cary Kennedy and Jared Polis appeared to be the highest polling candidates. Of the 96.83% of precincts reporting, according to the Colorado Democrat’s website, 49.2% of the precincts voted for Kennedy and 32.7%

voted for Polis.

Results from the caucus serve as a prediction for who to expect to make the ballot when it comes time for the primaries in June. Then, independent voters can participate.

In both the Democratic and Republican caucus, straw preference polls are done to see which candidates are preferred among local precincts. This only applies to candidates who want to enter the ballot through the caucus approach rather than the petition process, which is when party candidates must collect signatures for voters registered in their party.

Later this month, county assemblies will choose delegates for the state assembly on April 13 and 14. At the assembly, delegates will vote on statewide offices and decide on which candidates will make the primary ballot. Candidates hoping to make the ballot through the caucus process and not the petition process will need to get at least 30% of the votes. Of the Democrats,

Kennedy is the only Democrat not participating in the petition process. Mike Johnston and Polis are partaking in both process. Lt. Gov. Donna Lynne is only petitioning.

Coffman is the only top Republican not participating in both processes.

Denver Hockey falls to Ohio State in Regional Final

D

U Hockey lost 5-1 to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Midwest Regional Final on March 25 at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania after defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions 5-1 on March 24.

“Penn State is an explosive offensive hockey team,” Head Coach Jim Montgomery said about the Penn State game. “I thought in the first period we neutralized their transition game because of our commitment to staying on the right side of the puck. To me, that goes to our leaders and the guys that have been here before.”

In the victory, freshman defenseman Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alberta) and junior forward Troy Terry (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) both contributed offensively and senior goalie Tanner Jaillet (Red Deer, Alberta) made 26 saves to tie the school record for most career saves (82).

Denver went 1/2 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill.

In the loss to Ohio State, Head Coach Montgomery said, “I thought we came out and were ready.” He also added, “Our effort was really good tonight. We just have to tip our hat to Ohio State.

They were better than us in every facet. They deserve to move on.

In the loss, Terry and Mitchell were named to the All-Tournament team.

Both teams skated to a scoreless first period with the Denver’s best opportunity coming on the power play at 13:55. Junior forward Jarid Lukosevicius (Squamish, B.C.) attempted to bank a rebound off of Ohio goalie Sean Romeo into the net, but the puck bounced on the goal line before Romeo reached behind his back to save the goal. Ohio State outshot Denver 8-6 through 20 minutes.

The Buckeyes scored at 3:47 of the second period as Jalliet appeared to be unable to see the shot. Terry nearly equalized for the Pioneers with 5:20 remaining the in the second period as he carried the puck around Romeo, but no Pioneer was there for the contributory tap-in.

The lone goal for the Pioneers was at 11:21 of the third period when Mitchell found sophomore forward Tyson McLellan (San Jose, Calif.) with a pass through the crease. The Buckeyes responded with another goal 30 seconds later. At the buzzer, the final score was 5-1 in favor of Ohio State.

Denver finished 0/2 on the power play. Jaillet made 19 saves.

Fill your Spring Quarter with arts and life T

he start of Spring Quarter is a strange time; everyone returns from spring break not quite recovered from Winter Quarter exams, and although it feels like another first day of school, it’s also a countdown to summer. It’s the final quarter of the school year at DU, which leaves limited time for many to make the most of the nice weather and adventurous spirit of Denver and Colorado. Complete this Spring Quarter bucket list in order to ensure that your last quarter at DU is sufficiently filled with arts and life.

Check out a concert Denver’s music scene is only growing, and springtime will bring countless artists to different venues in the area. Save your money and see a big name like alt-J or Khalid, or find tickets to a more intimate show that won’t

break the bank as much. Also make it your goal to visit the world-famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre at least once; if you can’t make it there for a concert, get there early to enjoy a sunrise or skip the gym and use the venue for a new workout routine.

Find a new ice cream place Everybody loves their Ben & Jerry’s and their Dairy Queen, but DU is close to countless local ice cream joints that offer homemade treats and fun atmospheres, and warm weather is the perfect excuse to try them out. Bonnie Brae Ice Cream is a staple of the Denver area, and Sweet Cow on Pearl Street is a short light rail or drive away. Other local favorites include Little Man Ice Cream, Sweet Action Ice Cream and High Point Creamery.

Take a day trip to explore Colorado Denver itself is great, and there’s plenty to do, but don’t get stuck in the city this spring. Use a free weekend to get off campus and try something new. Drive up to the mountains to take advantage of the end of ski season. Road trip down to Great Sand Dunes National Park or out to Rocky Mountain National Park. Become a true Coloradan and hike a fourteener. Explore a neighboring city like Boulder, Colorado Springs or Aspen.

Go to the theatre You may not be able to score tickets to see Hamilton, but the Denver Center for Performing Arts has multiple venues and many different shows, so there is sure to be something in budget that everyone will enjoy. Also

consider trying a smaller local theatre company, such as the Curious Theatre Company or the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. Our own DU Department of Theatre has a great Spring Quarter lineup, as well, if you’re looking for a cheap and high quality option close to home.

Cheer for DU athletics Keep your school spirit up and support the DU athletic department this spring. Root for DU hockey as they close out another impressive season, bring your friends to a lacrosse tailgate or attend a soccer game or tennis match. After that, consider taking it to the big leagues and head out to a Rockies game as baseball season comes around.

Easy tips for eating on a budget

W

hen I was getting ready to begin my life as a college student, both of my brothers told me to get ready to live on instant ramen noodles, Easy Mac and Hot Pockets. Of course, these things are a crucial aspect of the college experience, but after freshman year, I realized that I missed cooking for myself. This may be extremely difficult when living in a dorm, but if you live in an apartment, you have a whole new arena of possibilities open to you.

It isn’t a surprise that many college students don’t have a ton of extra money sitting around to afford cooking fun meals. Several people have attempted to tackle the topic of cooking on a budget and in reality, it isn’t that difficult. Here are a few tips for how to cook on a budget without completely changing your lifestyle.

If you are a first or second year

student, you likely have a meal plan. Given the fact that these plans are very expensive, you should use your meal swipes and your meal plan cash to the fullest.

Eat on campus when you can and if you need to buy basic ingredients to cook with, get as many of them as you can at one of the C-Stores. If you are able, waive the meal plan and just buy food on a meal-bymeal basis when on campus. This allows you more freedom to cook without wasting money on meals you may never eat.

Another way to save money is to evaluate the stores you shop at to determine if they are the cheapest option for similar products.

To figure this out, it is smart to look at the cost of kitchen staples like milk and eggs. A half gallon of Dairy Pure 2% milk at King Soopers is $2.29 while it is $2.59 at Safeway. One 12-egg carton of Eggland’s Best large eggs costs $3.19 at King Soopers but costs

$3.69 at Safeway.

Another aspect to consider is whether it is really necessary to buy name brand products like Dairy Pure or Eggland’s Best at all. The generic half gallon of 2% milk at King Soopers is $1.79 and their brand of eggs is $2.19 per carton.

It is also a good idea to go to discount stores before going to general grocery stores. Stores like the Dollar Store and Big Lots often have many of the items used in everyday cooking for far less than stores like King Soopers.

When cooking, especially when your schedule can easily change, it is good to cook large portions of certain meals so that leftovers can be frozen for future days when you are either low on cash or time.

Meals like soups, chilli and pasta sauce can be easily frozen and reheated quickly. These are also meals that you can make a lot of at any given time without having

to buy a ton of extra ingredients.

When stocking up it is also smart to buy meats and (frozen or refrigerated) vegetables when they are on sale instead of on a weekly basis. This just allows you to get the best price on food you want to cook rather than having to adapt your cooking to whatever is cheap that week.

In the end, cooking should be fun. You should be able to cook the food you like without having to run up your credit card bill or blow your savings and, if you shop smart, this shouldn’t be too hard to do.

The Grind: The Bardo Coffee House Madison Heller | Clarion

O

ne of the perks of living in a big city like Denver is the seemingly endless supply of coffee shops.

All coffee shops have something unique to offer, whether it be excellent music or a quiet study location. Just north of I-25 on South Broadway lies a gem of a coffee shop, Bardo Coffee House.

Walking up to Bardo one notices some outdoor seating, and an appealing multi-story exterior.

Inside, the place feels inviting and cozy. There is an array of different seating, ranging from small tables to booths, and even a bundle of couches in the back lit by a few

lamps. Bardo is a perfect location to study for a DU student looking for a new coffee shop.

It is additionally in a great location. Not only is it directly next door to another Illegal Pete’s (great for a post-study or post-coffee meal), but it is a popping area of South Broadway. The hours are very convenient as well for any late-night coffee drinkers, as Bardo is open until 1:00 a.m. every single day.

I tried the Dente Latte ($3.75), which was a latte with cinnamon, chocolate and orange flavors. As a warm drink it was very rich, and the zesty citrus added a

unique and savory component to the beverage. I also sampled an iced Vanilla Latte ($3.75), which is particularly refreshing on one of Denver’s warm spring or summer days.

The menu is not limited to coffee, as there were a number of enticing and unusual drinks on the menu. Additionally there are various teas and Italian sodas, as well as a long syrup list to choose from to customize any drink further.

Bardo provides free wi-fi for three hours with any purchase, giving a student a reasonable excuse to park it at one location

and work for a couple hours. It may only be week one right now, so put a pin in this one for when the workload gets heavy. Or hit this place up with friends for a morning coffee date; there are not shortage of options for how to enjoy your time at the Bardo Coffee House.

The biggest films of Spring Quarter 2018

W

ith the final quarter of the year already in full swing, it’s important to catch a break and let loose any way you can. There are few better ways to take your mind off the books than the experience of going to the movies, and some of the biggest films of the year are already on their way to a silver screen near you over the next few months.

“Isle of Dogs” (March 28) The newest film from eclectic director Wes Anderson (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) sees him return to the quirky animated style of his previous film “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” spinning the tale of a fictional version of Japan where dogs have been banished to a trash-ridden island. Desperate to save his dog, a young boy travels to an/the island in

order to find him and is aided by a pack of new canine friends. The film has generated enormous amounts of buzz for its distinctly Anderson style and immensely talented voice cast, which features Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), Edward Norton (“Moonrise Kingdom”), Bill Murray (“Ghostbusters”) and many more.

Many are looking forward to the film not only for the promise of signature Spielbergian entertainment, but also for the endless slew of pop culture references the film will contain, as the game world within both the film and the novel represents a dizzying array of callouts to famous films, televisions series and video games.

“Ready Player One” (March 30) An adaptation of the wildly popular novel of the same name, “Ready Player One” follows Wade Watts, a teen living in a near-future dystopian version of Ohio, as he attempts to find an Easter egg within a virtual reality video game to which nearly the entire world goes for escape.

Helmed by legendary director Steven Spielberg (“Jurassic Park”), the film looks to be a classic dose of high-grade spectacle and nostalgia.

“A Quiet Place” (April 6) A horror-thriller from director John Krasinski, most well known for playing Jim on “The Office,” features him and real-life wife Emily Blunt (“Sicario”) as two parents struggling to keep their family alive in a world ravaged by monsters who hunt through sound. The high-concept premise, which renders the film almost entirely silent, has seemingly paid off as early reviews out of South

by Southwest have indicated that the

film is an incredibly tense thrillride and an early contender for horror film of the year.

“Avengers: Infinity War” (April 27) Arguably the biggest film of the year arrives in the form of “Avengers: Infinity War,” which promises to be the epic payoff to a decade’s worth of build-up set forth by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film will see The Avengers team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and others to take on long-teased super-villain Thanos (Josh Brolin, “No Country for Old Men”) as he attempts to “balance the universe” by taking out half of Earth’s population through the use of the all-powerful Infinity Stones.
