Hall County and area producers get the most for their crops for more than 40 years.

1923 HALL COUNTY COURTHOUSE RESTORATION

The"Temple of Justice" at the heart of Memphis is bustling with contractors and workers undertaking a monumental restoration project that supporters hope will bring new life and renewed pride to the community.

The 1923 Hall County Courthouse cost $175,000 when it was constructed. Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $3.2 million in today’s dollars; but of course, a building of that scale, form, and function could not be constructed for that sum now. Restoring the building will cost $11.3 million.

County Judge Ray Powell says it’s been a long road to get to the point of restoring the old building. The story begins with the founding of the county.

Hall County was organized in 1890, and two years later, the first Courthouse was built at a cost of $45,000. In a short time, the Courthouse Square became a hub of activity as Memphis grew and businesses came to town. In the center of it all, the old Courthouse stood as a land-

mark for about three decades before tragedy struck.

“It was a beautiful building,” Judge Powell says, “but it just wasn’t well built, and ultimately it burned down.”

Construction on the new Courthouse began in 1922, and the building was occupied in January 1923. Architect Charles Page designed the new building in the Classical Revival Style with Beaux Arts influences, and The Memphis Democrat gave a glowing description of the building before it opened, calling it “magnificent” and “a milestone in the advancement of Hall County.”

The Courthouse contained several unique features when it was brand new. A public auditorium occupied the east half of the first floor with a well-lit stage on the south side of the room, dressing rooms on either side of the stage, and opera chair seating for 308 people.

The clerk’s office on the second story included a spiral iron stairway to a large vault in a sub-basement where

county records were to be kept. The new building was also designed to be as fireproof as possible.

On the fourth floor, dormitories were constructed and furnished with single beds, bathrooms and showers for jurors, and another small sleep quarters adjoined the dormitory for the sheriff or deputy assigned to the jury.

Like many public buildings, renovations and modifications as the needs of the county changed through the years. Over time, Powell says, the auditorium was divided up for office spaces, windows were closed up and ceilings were lowered in the name of energy efficiency, and an elevator was added in the 1980s.

Age and other circumstances also took their toll on the Courthouse. Powell says by late 1990s and early 2000s, the Courthouse was suffering from settling, accessibility issues, and a hodgepodge of electrical systems that combined new wiring with the original 1923 wiring. Perhaps most alarming was natural gas leaks that employ-

ees could smell but were hard to pinpoint.

Evergreen trees planted around the exterior of the Courthouse were also presenting problems, not the least of which was that debris from the trees were clogging drains resulting in water damage to the building.

When the State of Texas began its Courthouse Restoration program, Hall County officials considered undertaking a restoration. Architectural and planning work was done, but there was no consensus to proceed. In 2007, it was estimated that a restoration would cost about $4 million, Powell said, but restoration was not favored by a majority of commissioners.

By 2019, the Courthouse’s problems were getting worse, and county officials again began again to pursue a restoration project with the Texas Historical Commission. A petition in 2022 put approval of the project on the ballot, and Powell says the vote was 67 percent in favor.

With $7.3 million in state

funding and $4 million in local funding, the county approved a bid from Premier Commercial Group, and county offices moved out of the building in the spring of 2023, relocating temporarily to a Courthouse Annex purchased a few blocks away at 101 S. Ninth.

Completion of the project is now expected in November 2025, and Powell thinks it will have a positive impact on the community.

“We’re hoping it will bring new businesses to the square,” Powell says. “We hope that it will look so great that it will get people to spruce up their properties and attract new business.”

The Courthouse is central to life in the comunity, Powell says, particularly the Hall County Picnic held each September, attracting people from all parts of the county as well as from out of town. The restored Courthouse is going to make that event and others much more special, he says.

“It’s going to be magnificent.”

memphis municipal airport Welcomes visitors

Situated on US 287, Memphis and Hall County are easy to get to by ground transportation, and the Memphis Municipal Airport also provides the option for visitors to fly to the community.

The airport is popular with several local pilots; and the 4,670-foot runway can accommodate many small and mid-size jets, which can comfortably and safely make Memphis a point for landing and departure.

Tie-downs are available for those wishing to fly in for business purposes, for family functions or community events, or to enjoy the many hunting opportunities that Hall County has to offer.

Located north of the city off FM 1547 near Fairview Cemetery, the Memphis Municipal Airport is well-maintained and benefits from easy access on paved roads.

Several private hangers are already on the property, and ample room is available for additional hangers for those wishing to use the airport on a long-term basis.

Memphis is proud of its airport and the opportunities it provides for commercial, agricultural, and economic develop-

ment interests.

David Morris, Jr., manages the facility for the city and can be contacted for more information by calling 806-2593001. Those interested can also request

A summertime tradition since 1953, the Memphis Public Swimming Pool provides hours of cool fun during the summer months.

The Memphis Swimming Pool at City Park has been providing fun times and relief from the summer heat for more than 70 years and is still going strong.

The Swimming Pool was constructed at a cost of

$55,000. Initially, local citizens voted against the bonds for the park improvements in August 1952.

City leaders were persistent, however; and, in February 1953, a new ballot initiative

passed with a narrow margin of only 36 votes in favor. Today, the city offers swimming lessons, and July 4th is a free swim day.

Today, the annual cost to operate the pool is over $40,000.

agriculture drives

Hall County's Economy

For more than a century, agriculture has been the driving force of the Hall County economy with generations of families working the land.

While the earliest settlers were primarily engaged in ranching interests, by the arrival of the Ft. Worth & Denver City Railway in 1887 started the transformation of Hall County into a farming-based economy. By the time of the 1910 ag census, farming was dominate and cotton was king with the fiber planted on about 52,000 acres.

Over time, the growth of farming led to more railroad connections and rail traffic and also spurred improved roads and highways throughout the county.

Today, Hall County Agri-Life Extension Agent

J.D. Schnitker says the local economy still is centered on agriculture.

"Ag is everything in this area," Schnitker says. "You look at what most folks do in Memphis; it's ag related.

Whether your talking about Birdsong Peanuts, our local gins, Mike's Farm Supply that's been in business so long, our fuel providers and so many others; it's all ag. In Turkey, it's the same thing. Most folks either work or own farmland, are working for farmers, or providing services to farmers."

Cotton is still the king among crops, but peanuts are huge in Hall County as well. Schnitker says hay production is also an important income producer and cattle operations are also significant.

Peanuts beginng to set at Lindley Farms in 2017. Photos by Lindley Farms.

AH-HAA!

CELEBRATING THE KING OF WESTERN SWING

Oneof the most famous small-town festivals in Texas is without a doubt the annual Bob Wills Days celebration in Turkey.

Held the last Saturday in April by the Bob Wills Foundation since 1971, the event draws thousands of people to the town that usually has a population of a little more than 300 and honors its most famous son.

Wills was born in East Texas in 1905 and his family moved to Hall County in 1913, settling on a ranch between Memphis and Estelline before spending much of his childhood in Turkey. He learned to play the violin and first performed for a dance in 1915. It was the beginning of a journey that would see Wills combine frontier fiddle playing with blues and jazz learned from black youth he worked and played with in cottonfields growing up to evolve a new genre – Western Swing.

The Bob Wills Museum, also operated by the Foundation, tells the story of the music maker daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and live music is popular in Turkey throughout the year, but Bob Wills Day is all about the King.

The 2025 Bob Wills Day celebration will be held April 24, 25, and 26. Among the numerous activities planned for the weekend including dances at the Old School Gym.

Asleep at the Wheel and Joshua Hedley will open this year's celebration with a Thursday Night Dance April 24 and doors will open at 6 p.m.

Jam Sessions will be held Friday at the museum from 1 to 4 p.m., and a Mercantile & Trade Show will be held at the Bob Wills Center. The Gem Theatre will screen "The Birth & History of Bob Wills" at 2 p.m.

The Friday Night Dance on April 25 will feature Bob Wills' Texas Playboys under the direction of Jason Roberts with special guest Billy Mata, and The Goodnights will also be playing. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Saturday, April 26, the Mercantile & Trade Show will continue, and the Parade will start downtown at 10 a.m. A BBQ Cookoff will be held in City Park all day, and the Fiddlers Contest will start at 11:30 a.m. in the Bob Wills Center. The Gem Theatre will have more Bob Wills films that afternoon, and Jam Sessions at the Museum will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A FREE outdoor concert at the football field will feature Bob Wills' Texas Playboys under the direction of Jason Roberts at 2:30 p.m.

The doors will open at 6 p.m. for Saturday night's dance that will feature a battle between Jody Nix & The Texas Cowboys vs. Jake Hooker & The Outsiders. The South Plains Western Swing Band will also perform. The Midnight Breakfast will start at 11 p.m. at the Bob Wills Cafeteria followed by the After Party at the Church of Western Swing.

CAPROCK CANYONS STATE PARK

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE AS BIG AS TEXAS!

Someof the most beautifully rugged country in West Texas is conserved in the Caprock Canyons State Park, which offers outdoor-lovers and sightseers numerous activities to enjoy.

The park is the home of the state’s official bison herd descended from the stock that was saved by Col. Charles Goodnight and his wife, Mary. Another remarkable experience is a bat colony living in the Clarity Tunnel on the park Trailway. Visitors can also hike, ride horses or bikes, camp, geocache, or take a

scenic drive. Lake Theo offers no-wake boating, fishing and swimming.

Included with the park’s 90 miles of trails, the Caprock Canyons Trailway covers 1,217 acres and stretches more than 64 miles and was formerly used as a rail line from the 1920s until 1989.

Today, the Trailway is popular with hikers, bikers, and equestrian trail riders. More than half of the Trailway lies within Hall County with its eastern most entry point just outside of Estelline on US 287 and another entry point

at the Turkey Depot off North Second Street.

The Trailway is broken into short segments, ranging from five to 12 miles long (one way). Solid decking and side rails on trestles allow easy bridge crossing for all users.

Visitors should carry all water, equipment, and supplies they will need. No water is available on the Trailway. Comfort stations are located at various points on the Trailway.

Campers can stay overnight in the park or at primitive campsites along the

Trailway.

Camps can be setup anywhere alongside the Trailway, but visitors should be sure they are within park boundaries.

The official headquarters of the park is located about a 23-minute drive from Turkey, north of Quitaque.

For more information about the Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway, visit https://tpwd.texas.gov/stateparks/caprock-canyons/trailway.

Music is Live in Turkey!

Live music all year long is Turkey's growing claim to fame with one or more musical acts performing in town almost every week and other special musical events throughout the year.

While Turkey is best known for the its annual celebration of its most famous son - Bob Wills, the town has also become a popular venue for musicians to perform and practice with people coming from miles around to enjoy their talent.

Driving the local music scene is Hotel Turkey. One of the oldest businesses in Turkey, the hotel has developed a reputation for its restaurant and bar and books artists almost every weekend to perform on its patio stage. The hotel

also books larger events with multiple acts that draw hundreds of people to its Big Stage out back. Tickets sell out quick for these events that are known for good music, good times, and good food.

Hotel Turkey will host its annual three-day Songwriters Festival September 25-28, 2025, and organizers sum it up best: "The songwriter is at the heart of everything we do at Hotel Turkey. And it is our honor to be a place that the songwriter and their songs can be celebrated and enjoyed. The world would be a very dark place if not for the live and original and independent music that these incredible artists create."

Learn more about

upcoming performances at HotelTurkeyTexas.com.

The hotel also operates a studio across the street, called The Boot Shop, where musical performances are recorded as posted on YouTube. Check them out at https://youtube. com/@hotelturkeytexas?si=cEoPDEzlsmVI7ngV

But the hotel isn't the only place where you can find live music in town. The annual Turkey Fest will be October 16-18, 2025, with three nights of musical acts in the gym. Learn more at facebook.com/octoberturkeyfest.

The Turkey Creek Winery also occasionally books muscial performances, which are promoted on their Facebook page.

Once a month, there is Music on the Slab on Main Street, and the historic Gem Theatre also hosts musical events throughout the year.

The BAM Texas Summer Music Camp will be held June 15-19, 2025, and invites young people to come to Turkey to learn more about Traditional Country and Western Swing style. Students come from all over to learn and improve their skills playing pedal steel guitar, fiddle, guitar, and bass. Check out Bam Summer Music Camp on Facebook to learn more!

If you love live music, Turkey is definitely a place you want to visit. Plan your trip today!

HAM'S BARBER SHOP A STEP BACK IN TIME!

Bob Wills wasn't always a famous fiddle player and band leader. One of his earliest jobs was as a barber in Ham's Barber Shop in Turkey.

F.O. Ham started barbering in Turkey in 1911 and was well-established when Wills went to work for him in 1928. Wills' days cutting hair only lasted about a year, but even after achieving fame in music and movies, Wills returned to perform a free concert in front of the barber shop.

Ham's shop continued under family ownership until it closed in 2001. Today, the shop has a Texas historic marker and has been

meticulously restored by Mike Goldsby, who has also restored Turkey's old Phillips 66 Station.

Ham's has licensed professionals cutting hair on a regular basis, and it is a popular destination during Bob Wills Day when two barbers and a shoe shine man will be waiting to serve visitors all day on Saturday, April 26.

Goldsby will also host a noon Fish Fry with all the fixings on Friday, April 25, at the 66 Station and live music will be featured on the adjacent Bob Wills Bus Stage featuring bands from Oklahoma and Fort Worth.

What became the county seat was denied several names with the post office before a pioneer saw a letter mistakenly addressed to Memphis, Texas, instead of Tennessee. The post office had written on it "No such town in Texas." The town quickly adopted the name, "Memphis."

valley patriots make school history in 2025

The Valley Patriots made history this year by winning the program’s first regional title in 42 years.

Valley snapped a long dry spell dating back to 1983 to advance to the UIL Class 1A Division I state semifinals after hot shooting helped handle Wildorado 63-50 during the regional championship at a packed Lubbock-Cooper Liberty.

“Valley is full of tradition,” Valley head coach Aaron Green said. “Especially in football. We’re happy to put this team on the map in basketball. The community support has been huge and behind us all the way."

Valley was unstoppable on the offensive end in the first half. Coming out firing the Patriots were an incredible 14-for-14 form the field inside the 3-point line in the first half giving Valley a commanding 30-16 halftime advantage. In the second half, the Patriots pushed that lead to 20 before the Mustangs put together a late fourth quarter rally but never cut the deficit closer than nine points.

On the opposite side, the Mustangs couldn’t have started colder opening the game 2-of-12 in the first two frames.

The brother duo of Corbin and Kanyon Taylor was the difference inside. Wildorado didn’t have an answer for 6-foot-7

freshman Corbin nor the 6-foot-8 Kanyon in the paint. The Taylor’s combined for 48 of Valley’s points with Corbin posting a game-high 29 and Kanyon following with 19 including five dunks.

“The Taylor boys were huge for us,” Green said. “Everyone has to double down on them so that opens up the outside. When they play like they did against Wildorado that makes us hard to stop and they work hard at their craft. It was a great effort, and I love coaching this team.”

Editor's Note: The Patriots got by Garden City for the Regional Championship, 6037, to advance to the State Championship March 6 in San Antonio where they fell to Perrin-Whitt, 46-65.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s basketball, football, baseball or track they always show up. They’re here day in and day out. The teachers, administration, cheerleaders and the student section we have has always supported us throughout this run.”

Valley Coach Aaron Green to PressPass Sports
