Ennis tops clean town awards STUART HOLLY

editor@clareecho.ie

T

HE Mayor of Ennis has welcomed the news that the county town has been named Ireland’s Cleanest Town in the latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL). The 2017 survey had pitted Ennis against Roscommon and Kildare. A special €40,000 public sculpture is to be commissioned for Ennis to mark the achievement. Mayor Paul Murphy said the award is “testament to the year round effort” by local volunteers, Ennis Tidy Towns Committee, Clare County Council and the business community.

“Ennis is a vibrant tourism town and a popular shopping destination which benefits greatly from the collective efforts of residents, visitors, the local authority, businesses and voluntary groups to keeping the streets and public spaces free of litter. The greatest example of this work was seen during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann when the streets were kept clean as more than 400,000 people visited the town,” he said. Mayor Murphy added that the recent naming of Ennis as a Coach Friendly Destination and as winner of the Retail Excellence Ireland Friendliest Place Award 2017 is “a vote of confidence in the partnership approach adopted by Clare County Council, Ennis Chamber and the local community to developing and promoting the Clare County Capital.”

House prices rise ELAINE TUBRIDY news@clareecho.ie

H

OUSE prices in Co Clare rose by five per cent in Co Clare last year, according to new figures released by Daft.ie. A house in the Banner County will now cost you an average of €164,589, which is a good €400,000 cheaper than a house in South Dublin. Diarmuid McMahon of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon in Ennis confirmed that house prices in some areas of the county rose by even more than five per cent. “In some parts of Ennis you would have seen price increases in excess of 10 per cent, but in other parts of the county it would be lower,” he added. Diarmuid said that increases could

be even higher within certain price points. For example, a house with an asking price of under €200,000 is more likely to have a higher price increase as potential buyers can afford higher bids on more affordable houses. “When you get up to higher values, you don’t see it. The percentages aren’t as great,” Diarmuid added. He confirmed that there is still a very low supply of properties coming on the market, but he believes that more properties will come on stream in 2018. “You will start seeing new sites starting to open in 2018, but still very limited in terms of being at a price point that is affordable for new development,” Diarmuid added.

Coastal locations hit by high seas and winds in latest storm ELAINE TUBRIDY elaine.tubridy@clareecho.ie

YESTERDAY marked four years to the day since residents on the Clare coast woke up to the destruction left behind by a severe winter storm. That storm resulted in dramatic photos of mammoth waves hitting Lahinch’s promenade adorn newspapers across the country. And while some equally stunning footage has emerged from this week’s storm, thankfully the havoc wreaked by storm Eleanor is nowhere near as bad, but she has left her mark all the same. Social media exploded with videos of high tides lashing coastal walls from Loop Head all the way to the Flaggy Shore and beyond. Clahane, an exposed area near Liscannor, was pounded by rocks and debris, with one local woman questioning why a sea wall had not yet been built in the area. Properties in Ballyvaughan were flooded after water crashed in over the pier and sea front. Meanwhile, a number of homes in Spanish Point were left without power overnight after high winds battered the coastal area on Tuesday.

Clare County Council has confirmed that the most severe winds associated with Storm Eleanor tracked further north than was initially forecast meaning that Clare did not experience as much disruption as Galway or Mayo. “However, the combination of high tide, a large sea swell and storm force onshore winds did case some disruption to coastal locations in the county,” a spokesperson added. The L-5025 at the Flaggy Shore was impassable yesterday to vehicular traffic other than local access due to rubble and shingle arising from Storm Eleanor. “Council crews are also removing shingle and rubble from other roads throughout West Clare, particularly in Loop Head. “There was a small number of fallen tree reports received during Tuesday and Wednesday morning. However, Clare County Council is continuing to advise motorists, particularly those using less travelled routes, to drive with care due to the potential for overhanging tree limbs and debris on the road,” the spokesperson added.

Ennistymon school leads way with new subject STUART HOLLY editor@clareecho.ie

ENNISTYMON Vocational School will be one of 40 post primary schools to start studying Leaving Certificate Computer Science from this September. “Leaving Certificate Computer Science will be introduced as a Leaving Certificate subject from this September, and I am pleased that Ennistymon Vocational School will be among the first to offer the new Leaving Cert subject. It’s students will be the first to sit an exam in the subject in 2020,” said Minister for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market & Data Protection Pat Breen. “There is a digital revolution taking place which is having a

transformative effect on our economy, workplace, and lifestyle. As minister of state with responsibility for business, trade, EU digital single market and data protection I see first hand that it is essential our next generation of employers and workers are not only capable in digital technology, but are to the forefront in utilising and developing this technology further,” he said. “The introduction of Computer Science as a Leaving Certificate subject is part of the Government’s overall commitment to embed digital technology in teaching and learning. Job creation up 4 per cent in Clare in 2017 ENTERPRISE Ireland, the Government agency responsible for developing Irish business globally, has reported strong job creation by its client companies in Clare, with a four per cent increase in the number of jobs created. 3,709 people are now employed by companies supported by the agency in Clare. A total of 19,332 new jobs were created by companies supported by Enterprise Ireland in 2017. 209,388 people are now employed in companies supported by the agency. This is the highest total employment achieved in the history of the agency. This represents a net increase of 10,309 jobs for 2017, taking account of job losses. In line with total employment levels, the net increase in jobs, is the highest on record with Enterprise Ireland. The job creation figures are up on 2016, showing strong consistent year on year growth, despite the uncertainty that Irish businesses faced in 2017 in the context of Brexit. Job creation was evenly spread across the country, with every county seeing job increases. Two thirds (64%) of the new jobs created were outside of Dublin. The West, Mid-West and North West saw the largest level of increases at seven per cent in 2017. Enterprise Ireland attributes this strong performance by Irish businesses to the continuing growth of an entrepre-

neurial climate for start-ups, allied to strong jobs growth in the Construction (8% increase), Engineering (8% increase), Lifesciences (8% increase), Digital Technology (6% increase), Electronics (6% increase), Food (4% increase) and ICT sectors (5% increase). Commenting on the positive job creation in Co. Clare, Minister of State for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection, Pat Breen TD said: “I am very pleased to see this strong level of job creation delivered for Clare by Enterprise Ireland backed companies. The priority of my Department, through Enterprise Ireland is to support companies in Clare and right across the country to continue to build on this strong job creation performance into 2018.” Enterprise Ireland also announced the launch of a new Market Discovery Fund to support Enterprise Ireland backed companies to diversify into new markets and promote new products. There are three levels of funding available to companies; up to €35,000, up to €75,000 and up to €150,000. Enterprise Ireland Chief Executive Julie Sinnamon added: “Today’s figures represent another year of strong performance by our client companies who now employ over 209,000 people and are a barometer of the robust health of Irish businesses.”

has been fundamentally transformed by new technology. Our education system must prepare our children to thrive in such an environment by equipping them with skills in creativity, adaptability and problem solving.” Today’s announcement is one of a range of actions the Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton is taking in this area, as outlined in his STEM strategy and Action Plan for Education, which aims to make Ireland the best education and training service in Europe by 2026. It also complements other curricular changes we are implementing such as introducing coding and computational think-

ing as part of the new maths curriculum for primary schools. Computer Science for Leaving Certificate focuses on how programming and computational thinking can be applied to the solution of problems, and how computing technology impacts the world around us. Students will learn Computational thinking; How to analyse problems in computational terms; Programming languages and how to read, write, test and modify computer programs; Creative design; Design computational artefacts such as web pages, digital animations, simulations, games, apps and robotic systems; The eth-

ical, historical, environmental and technological aspects of Computer Science, and how it impacts the social and economic development of society. Minister Bruton said, “In order to be the best in Europe, our education system must respond to these changes. The introduction of this new subject will teach our young people flexible, solution orientated thinking. It will teach them to be creative, adaptable learners. It will increase the number of students taking up computing and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) courses and apprenticeships after school leading to a highly-skilled workforce.”

Dour trolley situation as UHL imposes restrictions ELAINE TUBRIDY

I

news@clareecho.ie

NMO Trolley Watch figures have revealed that University Hospital Limerick was the worst in the country for overcrowding last year. End of year figures show that there were 8,889 patients treated on emergency department trolleys or on trolleys in the wards last year. This meant that there were 2,000 more patients on trolleys than any other hospital in Ireland. According to Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation analysis, there has been a 72 per cent increase in the number of patients receiving treatment on hospital trolleys since 2007 and a six per cent rise on last year’s figures. INMO figures also revealed that 677 patients were waiting on a trolley on Tuesday, which is another record high. The announcement comes as University Hospital Limerick

imposed visitor restrictions at the hospital, with seven confirmed positive cases of flu and a number of other patients symptomatic. “UHL has been experiencing a high number of patients attending the ED in recent days. We have admitted a lot of seriously ill patients recently, many of who remain in the ED awaiting a bed. “We are asking people to think about all their care and treatment options and keep ED services for the patients who need them most. UL Hospitals CEO Colette Cowan took to Twitter to appeal to patients to support hospital staff. “Emergency dept very busy @ULHospitals over last few http://days. You can attend Nenagh Ennis or St. John’s hospitals with minor illness/ injuries leaving UHL ED for very ill patients as the flu season takes a serious grip. Support the frontline teams. Support UHL #flu,” the tweet reads.

Clare to receive €70k to deal with Ophelia damage ELAINE TUBRIDY

elaine.tubridy@clareecho.ie

On average, Clare County Council responds to over 1,000 illegal dumping and backyard burning incidents annually. It is the responsibility of householders and business owners to ensure that waste is disposed of correctly either through an authorised waste collector, or by disposal at a civic amenity centre.

Let’s Keep CLare CLean.

Visit www.clarecoco.ie for more details.

CLARE County Council will receive €70,000 to deal with damaged caused by Hurricane Ophelia, which shut down the entire country last October. The recoupment funding is part of a €7million national package to clean up the damage left behind by the hurricane. Aside from fallen trees, 10,000 power outages and some water supply disruption, Clare escaped largely unscathed from the grasp of our first hurricane. About 100 calls were received to the emergency helpline set up by Clare County Council and approximately 50 of these calls required action by outdoor staff and Clare Fire Service. Sixty-two Fire Service personnel from seven Clare brigades responded to 39 storm related call outs during Monday. An additional five Senior Fire Officers were part of the 40-strong Crisis Management Team which comprised the Chief Executive of Clare Coun-

ty Council, all Directors of Services, Council staff, emergency helpline operators, Irish Water, HSE and An Garda Síochána. Electricity outages were experienced in patches across Clare, with the ESB working day and night to restore power outages. Parishes across the county were also still suffering disruption to their water supply for a number of days. All outpatient appointments were cancelled as a precautionary measure, and patients were advised that they would be contacted to reschedule their appointments. There were road closures in every area of Co Clare, with many of the Banner County’s main arteries cut off by fallen trees and ESB poles. The M18 motorway was also cut off at Sixmilebridge and Bunratty. Cork County Council will receive the largest share of the funding, with nearly €2 million going to the Rebel County.

‘Woman Of The Year’ loses almost six stone A Losing the weight has changed my life, says mother of five thousands of women in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes. Mary, who has gone from a dress size 20 to a 12, says: “When I started out I never dreamt I’d be able to achieve all that I have. Losing the weight has made such a big difference – it’s changed my life. My health is better, I have more energy and I’m much happier now – I definitely feel more comfortable in my own skin.” She joined Slimming World in July 2015 after becoming increasingly unhappy with her size. “I started to put on weight after having 5 children. I tried lots of different diets but they usually left me feeling hungry or miserable – or both, in fact. With Slimming World it’s completely different, I never have to miss out and I don’t have to get hung up on weighing and measuring everything I eat. My family and friends are all amazed by how much I can eat and still lose weight. I still eat many of the same meals

that I did before I started losing weight, like spaghetti bolognese, curries and roast dinners. Now I just prepare and cook them differently – and they taste so much better. I’ve

Right from the first moment I walked into my Slimming World group I felt comfortable though, and the support I’ve received has been amazing. I look forward to going to Slimming World each week.”

Mary lost 5.5lbs in her first week and was blown away that the changes she’d made had such a big impact so quickly. As the weight started to come off, her fitness improved Mary now loves her walk every day She says: “I feel like a different woman to the person who walked into Slimming World 2yrs ago and winning Woman of the Year is a real honour because there are so many amazing members in our group. I remember feeling like there was no hope when it came to my weight but I’ve realised that when people believe in you – and you believe in yourself – you can do anything you set your mind to. I really hope my weight loss can inspire other people to get started on their own journey and know that there’s a whole group of people waiting to support them every step of the way – especially at the Ennis Auburn Lodge group.” Elizabeth Anderson, who runs the Ennis group, says: “I’m so proud of Mary. She’s a fantastic ambassador for Slimming World and what she’s achieved is nothing short of incredible! Round of a paws for little Kossie Guide dog named after Ennis adventurer ELAINE TUBRIDY

E

elaine.tubridy@clareecho.ie

NNIS adventurer and charity campaigner Dermot Cosgrove has been given the privilege of having a stability dog named after him due to his fundraising efforts

last year. Dogs for the Disabled have called one of their newest recruits “Kossie” after the Kilkee-based adventurer, who collected a whopping €11,000 last year when he trekked around the Arctic Circle to raise money for the charity, which trains up puppies to act as guide dogs for disabled people. Dermot took on an arduous two-week solo trek through the wilds of The Arctic Trail, a remote area stretching for 160km across Greenland. “It’s kind of cool thinking that this pup is going to go on and help some kid get around and have a better quality of life,”

Dermot told The Clare Echo. He was inspired to raise money for the charity when he saw the incredible work that they do, providing assistance dogs for the disabled. “My sister is a puppy socialiser for Dogs for the Disabled. “She’s being doing that now for more than 10 years, so I’ve seen the work that she does and I’ve known about the work that Dogs for the Disabled does over the years,” Dermot added. Dermot plans to take on another epic journey this year, hiking through the Pyrenees for 10 days this summer. However, the main event doesn’t take place until next year, when Dermot will put on his fundraising hat again by walking from the north coast of Iceland to the south.

Fairgreen Stoves and Moloney Fuels make a hot team BURNING DRY TIMBER MEANS: 1. More heat 2. Burning less, saving money 3. Cleaner chimney with reduced risk of chimney fire 4. Cleaner glass

T

HE times they are a changing and gone are the days when people had to waste fuel and money trying to heat the house from an open fire. Stoves are the answer for those looking for a toasty warm home on a budget. For every €10 of fuel you put into an open fire, only €2 comes into the room. However with a stove €8 worth of heat comes into the room. Now that’s hot! Stove parts will wear out much quicker with coal. Timber is a much cleaner fuel to use in your stove and with the right fuel you will have plenty of heat. Twenty per cent and below is the ideal moisture content for efficient burning of timber (or turf). If you are buying your fuel at 23-24 per cent you can easily dry it beside the stove over-night. You can measure the moisture content with a moisture meter. To ensure our customers get the best out of their stoves, we supply these with our stove installations. When I’m buying my timber, I bring my moisture meter and check the levels. The last thing I want is to arrive home with damp timber.

Wet timber reading over 40 per cent which is freshly cut can take over a year to dry. We have been working with Moloney Fuels over the last couple of years and find them the most reliable supplier of dry tim-

WHETHER YOU ARE CUTTING YOUR OWN TIMBER, OR BUYING IT IN A SHOP, THERE ARE A FEW KEY POINTS TO LOOK FOR: 1. Split logs have a better burn rate and more heat. 2. Size: A good mix of small pieces to start the fire and larger pieces for longer running is ideal. 3. Moisture content. If the timber has too much water in

it, the fire struggles to burn off the moisture which causes; 1. Reduced heat output 2. Slow running smoky fire 3. Increased soot and corrosion in the chimney 4. Black glass

ber in the area. They have a great selection of timber in pallets and bags. Something for everyone, and they deliver direct to your home. The general rule of thumb is to clean your

chimney once a year and this rule also applies to stoves. A reputable cleaner will check your stove appliance and chimney to make sure they are in good working order.

pick at it. Just forget that idea. Instead put on a drying lotion example Clinique for drying lotion. Be sure to use a cotton swab, and apply the treatment only on the pimple itself. Let the treatment dry. Then take your concealer and apply it with a brush, right on the top of the spot. Work it around in a one-centimeter-wide radius, then take a cotton swab and buff away the edges. Set with a touch of powder. Now comes the hardest part: just forget about it. Really, a

pimple is just not worth ruining your day.

DILEMMA: It’s been a long,

tough day, yet you still have two meetings ahead of you. CAROLINE’S TIP: Take five minutes and refresh yourself. Step into the washroom and

blot down what’s left of your makeup. Cup your hands and splash cool water on your face (pictured left), pat dry. Take out your emergency kit and start to patch up for round two. Apply foundation or powder, a touch of blush, add foundation to the lips to allow a fresh lipstick application, and reapply a dressier colour, one with a touch of depth or shimmer... It will give you that pick- me-up. Repowder over eye make-up, it will even it all out and erase the day’s smudges. Now you’re ready for the rest of what today brings!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Author spreading the word of positivity

Loving Deeply from one’s heart in 2018

A

S we look forward to another new year, it is a time for giving thanks for blessings received, asking forgiveness and mercy for transgressions committed, forgiving those who have aggrieved us, and asking for mercy, grace and strength for the future. Already, just as the New Year is about to begin, we are aware of needing to make decisions about both our past and future. We cannot reject the past, but we can allow it to be redeemed. We cannot determine the future, but we can allow it to be permeated with the love and the mercy of God. I can look back on 2017 and the resolutions or new beginnings that I made and see how often I have failed to live up to those. I can look forward in hope to trying to live my resolutions or new beginnings better in 2018, but, most of all, I can decide, here and now, to try to live today as it should be lived, because ‘today’ is all we ever really know. So, for me, 2018 will seek a renewed sense of purpose about what I am called to be and do and to try and love deeply from my heart.

NEW BEGINNINGS FOR 2018

In 2018 try to rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray with others. Pray often. God will listen, if you only speak. Be tolerant of those who are lost on their path and pray that they will find guidance. Search for yourself, be yourself. Do not allow others to make your path for you. It is your road and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you. Life can be so unfair and heartbreaking at times. But life can be good too. I hope and pray that 2018 will be a good one for all of you. Friends come and go, but the real ones stay around or are part of your life when you really need them. Nurture the good ones. Being a person that’s kind, caring and loving really matters in life. When in doubt or afraid, just take one day at a time and try to live in and for the present moment, one step at a time. Life can be very short. Love and care as much as you can, for the time allotted to you is never known. It’s okay not to feel okay but it is always okay to ask for help or support. In 2018 go after your dreams at all times when you can, especially if it involves genuine love and care. Try to do and be what you love. Be aware and work on your problems if you have them and always look for a good and speedy resolution for them. Always keep trying and moving for-

ward. Always consider the power of your words carefully as they can hurt for real. Look at things from every angle before you make a decision or a statement for they too can hurt. Always pray for others intentions and if you’re like me, always light a candle for someone. Live for today and the present moment as it is special and real, for tomorrow might never come. Make every one of your days here on earth count for the good of yourself and for others. Choose life and love for something can be lost and gained in living life every day. Go to your doctor for checkups and look after your health, no one else will. Help your friends and your work colleagues always or as much as you can for they are central to your life.

LOVE DEEPLY IN 2018

Loving and living deeply from the heart is not easy. It takes work. Very hard work. It demands self-sacrifice, a generous spirit, great tenderness and goodness and an expansive embrace. It implies the risk of loving and living without barriers and obstacles. It suggests walking in someone else’s shoes, leaving behind one’s own baggage that makes the walk heavier, and letting go of old habits that become burdens on the journey. It is to speak and act with mercy and compassion. Loving and living deeply from the heart is intentional. It does not happen accidentally. It happens because we decide to live that way. We love in spite of us, even if it hurts. It means going beyond what holds us back, beyond what bothers you about another person and looking for the good in them. Loving and living deeply from the heart is about forgiveness and mercy - forgiving previous generations for their actions. And in the case of some of the most difficult and painful situations, loving deeply from the heart also means praying: God forgive us, even though we know what we do have mercy on us. Deep-hearted love does not just contemplate the wrongs that have been done or the mistakes that have been made; it also calls us to active repentance and mercy. It says, “Don’t just sit there feeling bad; do something to make it better. It gets beyond that which keeps us stuck in the past and prevents us from moving into the future. At the center of it all, deep hearted love and life is a call to conversion and, if we’re honest with

 A GIFT: Family love

ourselves, most of us need this wake-up call to conversion. Maybe loving deeply from the heart should be part of everyone’s New Year’s resolutions for 2018.

2018 IS UP TO YOU!

In 2018 remember that, “One song can spark a moment; One flower can wake the dream. One tree can start a forest, One bird can herald spring. One smile begins a friendship, One handclasp lifts a soul. One star can guide a ship at sea, One word can frame the goal. One vote can change a nation, One sunbeam lights a room. One candle wipes out darkness, One laugh will conquer gloom. One step must start each journey; One word must start each prayer. One hope will raise our spirits; One touch can show you care. One voice can speak with wisdom. One heart can know what’s true. One life can make the difference; you see 2018 is up to you!”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

As your thought for the week and for the New Year, don’t ever forget for even a second how very important and how very special each and every one of us Are. Here is a story to finish this thought from my Nana Scully’s prayer book about a person asking God what he would wish for each one of us for the new year. “As God, what would you ask your children to do for the new year?” He said, “To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but who they have in their lives. To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. To learn that they should control their attitudes, otherwise their attitudes will control them. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in persons we love, and that it takes many years to heal them. To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness. To learn that there are persons that love them dearly, but simply do not know how to show their feelings. To learn that money can buy everything but happiness. To learn that while at times they may be entitled to

be upset, that does not give them the right to upset those around them. To learn that great dreams do not require great wings, but a landing gear, to achieve. To learn that true friends are scarce; he/she who has found one has found a true treasure. To learn that it is not always enough that they be forgiven by others, but that they forgive themselves. To learn that they are masters of what they keep to themselves and slaves of what they say. To learn that they shall reap what they plant; if they plant gossip they will harvest intrigues; if they plant love they will harvest happiness. To learn that true happiness is not to achieve their goals, but to learn to be satisfied with what they already achieved. To learn that happiness is a decision. They decide to be happy with what they are and have, or die from envy and jealousy of what they lack. To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see something totally different. To learn that those who are honest with themselves without considering the consequences go far in life. To learn that even though they may think they have nothing to give, when a friend cries with them, they find the strength to appease the pain. To learn that by trying to hold on to loved ones, they very quickly push them away; and by letting go of those they love, they will be side by side forever. To learn that even though the word “love” has many different meanings, it loses value when it is overstated. To learn that they can never do something extraordinary for me to love them; I simply do. To learn that the shortest distance they could be from Me is the distance of a prayer.” God bless and Happy New Year to each and everyone of you that reads or share my column and may the future be bright and safe for you and all your families, friends and colleagues. Please try to love deeply from your heart in 2018 for the good of everyone especially those most in need in our communities and world.

K

ILLIAN MULLARNEY’S presentation is titled “The Art of Bird Identification-a forty year perspective on birding and field guides”. The talk will begin with a short account of how Killian’s interest in birds developed and was nurtured at a very young age, with references to key influences on him at that time. He will take us back to a time when the only telescopes available were far inferior to what we have now. The limited information in field guides meant there was huge potential for personal discovery

when the first real good telescopes appeared in the late 70s. This led to a ‘renaissance’ in bird identification knowledge, that continues to the present day.

Killian will have some copies of the Collins Bird Guide with him which will be available to purchase and of course he will be happy to sign books old as well as new. His talk will begin at 8pm on Friday January 12 at the Temple Gate Hotel. All are welcome to attend. The event is hosted by the Clare Branch of Birdwatch Ireland. Photos are of Killian at work as a young artist and a copy of The Collins Bird Guide.

Hot tips for Clare grooms Y

OUR Mrs to be is more than likely doing most of the wedding planning (and most of them prefer it that way), but there’s no harm in getting yourself prepared for the big day. We’ve got you, grooms. Check off every item on this list and you will be the best husband ever, in their eyes at least.

her a gift 1tionsBuyThere are the classic gift opsuch as a nice piece of jew-

ellery, her favourite perfume or lingerie. But we think you need to dig a little deeper here and put some major thought into this. Is there a place/time of year/restaurant etc. that’s special to both of you? Incorporate it into the gift and she will be mighty impressed.

2

Flowers for the mothers For the love of all that is holy, do not forget the mothers

on your wedding day. Make sure you have a bouquet of flowers to present to your own mother and the mother in law to be. It’s a lovely gesture and to be fair, we would be lost without them. The suit 3 This is one area where you have (almost) complete control,

so make the most of it. Take a trip to Ennis and check out Manix and Patrick Bourke’s, who will have you kitted out in no time. Two months before the wedding should be plenty of time to get the suit sorted, but the sooner you check it off the list the better.

Grooming for the groom 4 Fellas generally have it easy when it comes to looking good,

as they don’t have to put a huge amount of effort into their appearance. Your wedding day is one

occasion where you want to look (and feel) your best, so it won’t hurt to put in a little prep work. Start taking care of your skin regularly before the wedding, step away from the burgers and hit the gym. You will thank us. Also, make sure to get a haircut a couple of days before the big day. after your 5ItLook groomsmen may seem obvious, but

it’s your job to make sure your best man and groomsmen are sorted for the wedding. Help your best man with his speech, give them a game plan for their various responsibilities (making sure the band is paid etc) and show your appreciation with a gift. Have their back and they will have yours on the wedding day and beyond.

Does size really matter? l UNIQUE VENUE: The Pipers Inn in Killaloe offers a very speical and intimate flavour for a smaller wedding party

Deciding on number of guests is tough job WEDDINGS with hundreds of guests can be unbelievable craic, but a small wedding of 50 people can be just as stunning. It all depends on the feel you are going for. Irish people are known to have endless lists of cousins, so the guest list can easily hit 200 before you even get to your closest friends. It can be difficult to ignore the noise from bossy family members who insists that Mary from down the road better be on the invite list. So you’ve got to decide what’s more important; what you want or keeping people happy (which can often be exactly what you want.) Here we look at the most important things to remember when drawing up your guest list.

1

Just right First thing’s first. If you plan on having a massive blowout for your wedding, you better make sure your wedding venue can accommodate them. Guests will not be impressed if they have to eat their meal in another room. Equally, make sure the venue isn’t too big for a small wedding, as it can take away from the intimate feel.

2

Budget The size of your guest list ultimately comes down to your budget. Sure, you don’t want to offend anyone. It’s also important to realise that weddings are expensive and ultimately you probably won’t be able to invite everyone. To be fair, most people will recognise that you don’t have endless pockets and will understand if they are not invited.

3

I got new rules Make sure you apply the same invitation rules to everyone. For example, if you make a rule not to invite the first cousins, you better have a pretty good explanation if you decide to invite a bestie who also happens to be a first cousin.

4

Stick to the plan Make a guest list and stick to it. Or at the very least, don’t invite anyone else until someone turns down an invitation. This will inevitably happen as around 10 per cent of wedding invitations are declined.

5

Afters If all else fails, invite those you can’t fit at the dinner table to the afters of your wedding. It will be great fun to have everyone there and it’s a fantastic way to really get the party started (plus, then they can’t say they weren’t invited).

Popping the big question I

F YOU’VE decided you’re ready to spend your life with that someone special, all that’s left is to figure out how you are going to propose.Popping the question is very daunting. Don’t worry, we’re here to help. The most important thing is that the proposal comes from the heart.

and await the answer. Stay kneeling down for a while – it’s romantic. Proposing to your girlfriend is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. PROPOSAL IDEAS Away from home At the end of a day’s sightseeing, go for a drink. Arrange for hotel staff to set up candles, flowers, and champagne in your room. When you return, you’re all set for a beautiful proposal. Homemade Get material for making letters and spell out “Will you marry me?” Be creative – duct tape, colored paper, and petals are all good. Alternatively, spell out the proposal in leaves in the yard.

At-Home Proposals Tie a velvet ribbon between two places in your house. Fasten photos and notes detailing your relationship along the ribbon. At the end, you’ll wait to present them with the ring. Catch her off guard Make enquiries about her ring size, for example, by showing her a ring chart. When she says you’re spoiling the surprise, whip out the real ring. Valentine’s Proposal Ideas Valentine’s is around the corner so why not make it one to remember. Hint: It will also take the hassle out of getting her a seperate Valtine’s gift (shhh).

True cost of saying ‘I do’

Irish weddings average €25k

T

HE average cost of a Co Clare wedding comes in at €21,595, according to a survey by Weddingface.com. Another survey by weddingsonline.ie revealed that the average Irish wedding came in at just under €25,000. As if you needed another reason to get married in the Banner County, with its stunning scenery and unforgettable venues, not to mention the award winning wedding venue suppliers. Unsurprisingly, July and August are still the most popular months to get married, with weekend weddings still topping the polls. Weddingsonline.ie report that the average cost of a wedding meal works out at €66 per guest, with nearly a quarter of couples spending over €80 per guest. A quick estimation of a 150-guest wedding shows that you’re already at €12,000 - and that’s before the dress, suits, rings, music, photographers, flowers, honeymoon and the day after are even factored in. On paper it is more expensive to invite more guests but common knowledge is that the more you invite, the less money you’ll ultimately spend as guests on average will gift you more than enough money to cover their seat at the table. But no matter what you do, the wedding business is expensive regardless of what way you do it. It being one of the biggest days of your life, brides and grooms are happy to spend on quality and fifteen per cent of couples go over their budget by l COMMITMENT: Getting married is a huge commitment and this can be reflected in the costs associated with the big day. Go alternative for a unique wedding day

O

NE sure-fire way to make your day one to remember is by going down the route less travelled. It takes guts to break from the traditional route due to sociatal pressures, but there are more amazing options today in Clare than ever before. Here, we take a look at alternative wedding ceremonies, wedding fashion alternatives and 10 cool décor ideas.

ALTERNATIVE CEREMONES A traditional knot tying ceremony: Also known as a hand-fasting ceremony, this Celtic tradition is making a comeback. Humanist: Get your closest friend registered as a celebrant and have them officiate at your wedding. Intimate and fabulous. Tree planting (pictured below): Plant a tree in a place you both love and will visit often. Watch it grow and visit it when times get tough to see how far you have come together Sand ceremony: Choose two different colours and place them together in a jar. Particularly lovely for those who love to travel. Water ceremony: Pour different coloured glasses of water into one big vessel. A nice idea for weddings based on the coast.

Wear a hat instead of a veil (below). Ireland 4 is packed to the brim with fantastic milliners. The best part is you can wear this again after your wedding.

Dream honeymoon destinations

ARGUABLY the most exciting part of planning a wedding is deciding on where to go for the honeymoon. There are so many destinations to visit and if you are lucky enough to get a few weeks off work then going further afield is even more enjoyable. And according to Emirates, honeymoon bookings from Ireland are up and newlyweds are spending more than ever before. The top destinations for Irish newlyweds have been revealed, with Mauritius and Bali topping the list. Rounding off the top four destinations are Thailand and the Seychelles. Emirates has reported a significant increase in honeymoon bookings in Ireland, with the airline’s honeymoon business up approximately 34 per cent for the first seven months of 2016, compared to the same period last year. Commenting on the increase in bookings, Enda Corneille, country manager for Emirates in Ireland has said: “According to the Central Statistics Office, the number of couples getting married in Ireland has stayed static

l PLACE TO BE: Mauritius is one of the top four destinations for Irish honeymooners at the moment

at around 22,000, so the increase in bookings is unlikely to be related to a rise in couples tying the knot. “Our sense is that consumer confidence is returning to the Irish market and it’s easier now than ever before to get to amazing honeymoon destinations such as Dubai, Mauritius and the Seychelles. Speaking about the type of holidays being taken he added: “The honeymoon is seen as the perfect opportunity to take that holiday of a lifetime and couples want to make the most of their time away as well as their budget. “The current trend for newly weds flying with Emirates from Ireland is to take in two holiday destinations, usually involving a stop over in Dubai on the return journey, where the lure of yearround sunshine has huge appeal.” Furthermore, 10 per cent of Emirates’ honeymoon customers from Ireland opt to travel in Business Class. With this extra upgrade the newlyweds can enjoy gourmet cuisine, complimentary champagne and a selection of fine wines, lie-flat seats, an airport chauffeur collection service and a greater baggage allowance.

Motoring MOTORING EXPERT NEIL BRISCOE GIVES HIS VIEWS lBEYOND EXPECTATION: Suzuki Swift

SWIFT STUNNER SUZUKI DELIVERS ITS BEST SWIFT YET

ROAD TEST: SUZUKI SWIFT 1.0 BOOSTERJET SVHS

L

IKE Leicseter City winning the Premier League, it’s always something of a delight to see an underdog performing beyond your expectations. Of course, it’s a bit tricky to describe Suzuki as an underdog, exactly — after all, it has significant global sales, has its vast motorbike empire, and its marine engine division, quite apart from its car making side, and it’s one of the most important brands in fast-growing markets in east Asia. Still, compared to the likes of Toyota and VW, Suzuki is a minnow swimming with sharks, so it’s really pleasing to report that this, the new Swift, can certainly give the bigger fish a nip, a bite, and a swim for their money, so to speak. The Swift, of course, has been with us for quite some time. The name first appeared as far back as 1983, but it was the re-creation of the name, in 2005, that really reminded us just what a good maker of cars, especially small cars, Suzuki can be. A dozen years on and here we have the third generation of Swift since then, and it looks very similar to its 2005 grandfather. That’s no accident — Suzuki hit upon a seam of cute, appealing styling, not entirely dissimilar to that of a modern Mini, and it’s been carefully honing and improving that ever since. You’ll spot the new Swift from

its bigger, more gaping grille at the front, and the little fish’s fin effect of the rear pillar, where you’ll find a concealed door handle. Inside, you’ll find (at long last) space. The previous two generations of Swift were far from noted for their cavernous interiors; quite the opposite in fact, but for this generation Suzuki has suddenly remembered that rear-seat passengers have legs and heads too. So there’s now more than adequate space in the back. Up front, you’ll find some of the same limitations as you would have in the old Swift, primarily the use of lots of relatively cheap grey plastic and some old-fashioned switches and dials. That’s not a deal-breaker, to be honest, as everything is pleasantly laid-out and there’s little or no doubt about the overall quality of assembly, but it doesn’t have the touchy-feely qualities that you’d find in rivals such as the new Ford Fiesta or Seat Ibiza. Our well-specced SV5 model test car augments that with a nice, big, bright touchscreen, which looks smart. It’s not, perhaps, the most sophisticated unit to use (the graphics seem more than a little out-dated) but it does, rather crucially, come with Apple CarPlay which means your fruitbased phone works seamlessly with the car’s systems, to the benefit of both convenience and safety. All that’s pretty decent, but the real star of the show lies under the bonnet. Boosterjet may sound like the kind of name that a ten-year-old would give to an aeroplane, but the Suzuki’s little 1.0-litre turbocharged

petrol three-cylinder engine is a grown-up gem. Combining both direct fuel injection and a powerful, but teeny-tiny turbocharger, this is a delight of an engine to drive. It revs with a pleasing, slightly gruff warble and has more than sufficient poke to make the Swift feel almost, almost, like a junior hot-hatch. Part of that poke comes from the optional mild-hybrid SVHS system. It’s not a Toyota-style hybrid, in the sense that there’s not a huge battery pack and you can’t run on just electric power, but instead is a compact battery and starter-generator motor (which weighs just an extra 6kg) which can take some of the strain off the engine during steady running (to the benefit of fuel economy) or add an extra 50Nm of torque to the engine, on demand (which makes the Swift feel very, well, swift…). It means you can combine a very decent 10.6sec 0-100kmh time with claimed 65mpg fuel economy (and that’s not an entirely fictional figure, either) and 97g/km Co2 emissions, so you’ll pay a mere €180 in motor tax every year. That jewel-like engine is combined with genuinely engaging, agile, and spritely handling. It’s not quite as much fun, nor quite so agile, as the old 2005 Swift, but it’s right up there at the peak of the small car class, alongside the Fiesta, when it comes to enjoyment. With sharp steering, it’s just so much fun to fling around, and if the ride quality is a touch stiff (and quite noisy) then that seems like a price worth paying. Speaking of which, shop carefully for

FACTS & FIGURES: Model tested: Suzuki Swift 1.0 SHVS Pricing: €19,365 as tested, Swift range starts from €14,995 Engine: 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol with Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) mild hybrid Transmission: five-speed manual, front-wheel drive Body style: five-door hatchback CO2 emissions: 97g/km (Band A2, €180 per annum) Combined economy: 65.7mpg (4.3 litres/100km) Top speed: 195km/h 0-100km/h: 10.6 seconds Power: 111hp at 5,500rpm Torque: 170Nm at 2,000- to 3,500rpm Boot space: 265 litres rear seats up, 579 litres rear seats down EuroNCAP rating: Three-stars; 83% adult, 75% child, 69% pedestrian, 25% safety assist (four-stars with optional safety pack) your Swift. Prices start from a very low €14,995 but our test car was specced up to a hair under €20k. You can save a significant amount by not going for the hybrid system, though, so that’s worth considering. As indeed is the Swift itself, if you’re in the market for a small, cute, fun, agile, enjoyable, practical, reliable, frugal car. And who wouldn’t be in the market for all of that?

Eight handed debuts in Banner win Co-op Munster Hurling League at LIT GAA Pitch

LL but the venue went to plan on Saturday as Clare recorded their biggest win yet of the Moloney-O’Connor era against the Kingdom in the first outing of the fourteam Munster league. Despite the change in venue from O’Garney Park in Sixmilebridge to the GAA Grounds in LIT at the eleventh hour – a relatively large crowd gathered to see the Banner boys record one last victory in the 2017 calendar year, carrying through form from their classy Fenway Classic win six weeks earlier. While Peter Duggan led the charges throughout that campaign, All Ireland club finalist Niall Deasy (Ballyea), a man of equal stature and build, laid down the gauntlet to the visitors early claiming three first half points, assuming a leadership role throughout despite the game being his first in a Clare senior jersey nestled within a somewhat new-look Clare side. The Banner management handed debuts to eight new players throughout the course of the contest. Rory Hayes (Wolfe Tones na Sionna) and Diarmuid Ryan (Cratloe) blended into a traditionally-formatted Clare defence alongside 2013 All Star David Mc Inerney and experimental full back Conor Cleary, positioned closer to the goal mouth than usual. Clooney-Quin’s Ryan Taylor was rewarded for excellent displays through-

out the club campaign as he started alongside the very impressive David Reidy – Clare’s top scorer of the day with 1-3 from play in the first period alone. Gary Cooney (O Callaghan’s Mills) joined Ryan as a second graduate from the 2017 Clare minor ranks as he assumed the top right corner spot. Three additional players were blooded in the second half – Newmarket’s Colin Guilfoyle impressing with two points from play from the right flank; while Mikey O’Neill and Daragh Corry make the conversion from Clare senior football and Oscar Traynor soccer respectively to join the setup adding three points between them. Clare were dominant throughout the clash and never looked in doubt of claiming victory. Three first half goals from Reidy, O’Donnell and O’Connell placed Clare firmly in the driving seat with a 15 point lead at the break – 3-11 to 0-5. The Banner’s superior aerobic fitness became an apparent factor in

the second period as they hit the Kerrymen for 1-9 more with the aid of the breeze, the Kingdom’s high wide count despite a favourable work ethic, made for an unflattering final score of 4-20 to 0-12. Attention now turns to a repeat pairing of the 2017 Munster Final as Clare host Cork in the second outing of the Munster League in Cusack Park this Sunday. The Rebels will be looking for their first win of the 2018 campaign as a relatively second-string side lost out to a strong Limerick team featuring 10

All Ireland U21 winners 2-23 to 1-21 under lights in Mallow GAA complex.

Clare Scorers: D Reidy (Eire Og) 1-3, N Deasy (Ballyea) 0-5, B Duggan (Clarecastle), Shane O’Donnell (Eire Og), Cathal Tots O’Connell (Clonlara) 1-1 each, D Corry (Tulla), R Taylor (Clooney-Quin), C Guilfoyle (Newmarket on Fergus) 0-2 each, M O’Malley (Kilmaley), J Conlon (Clonlara), C Malone (Sixmilebridge) 0-1 each.

38 CROSSWORD/HOROSCOPES

THURSDAY, JAN 4 2017

Your Horoscopes January 4 Reliability is a virtue, especially when it comes to finances. In fact, it’s quite virtuous of you to take a look at any consistently unhealthy ways you deal with money. It’s even more educational for you (and your checkbook) if you start to plan how to deal with your money on a consistently functional basis, rather than the same patterns that have recently come into question.

Taurus

Gemini

You and someone close may get so giddy in each other’s company that your heads seem to have settled in the clouds for now, but your feet should be firmly planted on the ground. This helps take care of all the irritating details, so you can both revel in each other’s company without even a bit of guilt. Altogether, you’re a fantastic combination.

Truth is certainly stranger than fiction, though it’s usually not as stylish! It’s your job now to sift out the facts from the tall tales. It’s important to consider your sources. Since you’re able to see both sides of most issues, you’re better able than most to spot a cherished truth that’s actually just an embellished opinion. This should definitely come in handy as you go about your day!

Cancer

Leo

Virgo

It’s a good moment to keep your social life low-key -- instead of fighting your way through crowds, just gather a few close friends who really understand you (and spend your time near water, if possible). Your emotional nature might take you a step further and opt for solitude. This would be a good time to commune with your spirit and ask the big questions -- and get some big answers.

Someone could be taken aback by your brutal honesty when you change your mind about plans they thought were set in stone. You’re done with following other people’s agendas just because it’s polite, and you’re ready to try new goals. Trust your instincts and use your emotional momentum to break out of old habits, whether emotional, professional or personal.

Look for a new way to reduce the number of duties in your life and make space for the things that you really want to do. Once you give yourself the space to examine recent events in your life, you might find yourself dictating the outcome of the next few events, instead of feeling that you’re at the mercy of fate. Learn to be focused and perform actions mindfully, rather than rushing through them.

Break out the palette, word processor, knitting needles or whatever you use to please your muse. Your energy emphasizes art and creation right now. That could mean exploring a museum you’ve never been to, or maybe looking through your old sketchbooks from that long-ago life-drawing class. It should provide plenty of inspiration to pick up your tools and make something that pleases you.

You are the best at coming up with far-reaching ideas or being a visionary in your chosen field, but you might not be quite as flexible when it’s time to implement those ideas -or listen to other people’s opinions. Try doing some simple yoga or even deep breathing -- whatever it takes to help you find a way to stay limber so the rest of you can keep up with your clever (and flexible) brain.

Supremely capable and hard-working people like you aren’t always the best at expressing feelings, but that all changes for you today. You’ve got a lot of emotions that you need to get off your chest, and you’re determined to express them to those who are closest to you. Not only are they pleased to hear you let it all out, but they reciprocate in ways that will please you immensely.

Your mental energy gets a giant helping of earthy influences, which help bring you a deep sense of calm. It’s fortunate, too, because you’re just about to tackle some big tasks that require the best of your intellect. The only way to stay focused on these tasks is to retain a sense of connection. Remember that as you set about reaching your goal.

Even if their demands are unreasonable or they’re being weirdly fussy, face up to your people bravely. Use your natural speed and clever brain to engage them instead of simply dismissing their concerns. You’re more than capable of giving generously (of time and energy), so make sure you take care of that right now, no matter how trying this person is to your patience.

You’re usually able to keep up with your crazy pace, but sometimes it feels as if everything is moving faster, louder and more frantically for no good reason. Fortunately, you’re smart enough to know when you need to replenish body and soul. Now is the time to take a break and do something indulgent that pampers you inside and out. It could be as simple as a good book or a trip to the beach. Do it now!
