‘Hospitals in Midwest need more funds’ STUART HOLLY

A

CONTINGENCY plan needs to be put in place to address the hospital trolley crisis for the winter months in light of waiting times at Clare’s nearest A&E hospitals which are consistently “two of the worst” in the country, according to a Clare politician.

While taking a shot at the current Government’s handling of public healthcare, Clare General Election candidate for Sinn Féin Noeleen Moran has called for a contingency plan to be put in place in light of consistently high numbers of patients ending up on trolleys throughout summer months.

“It is very worrying that throughout the summer period there has been little or no drop off in the number of patients ending up on hospital trolleys,” said Ms Moran.

“The Irish Nurse and Midwives Organisation has recorded 7,069 patients on trolleys in July awaiting admission for inpa-

tient treatment. Despite promises to tackle the crisis in health, the reality is that from 2016 to 2018 since Fine Gael came into Government there has been a 31 per cent increase in patients ending up on trolleys.

She continued, “Of particular concern for Clare patients is that University Hospitals in Limerick and Galway are two of the worst affected in the country.

“For the past two years Sinn Féin has repeatedly called for the Minister for Health to commit to funding to reopen beds in hospitals which were closed during the austerity years and to address the staffing levels.

This Government has so far demonstrated an utter lack of urgency in resolving the crisis in our health service.”

The North Clare politician added, “It is paramount now given the summer increase that the Government makes special provision to deal with this crisis before winter sets in. That is why we are calling on the Government to specifically target funding towards the Midwest hospitals.”

Huge Clarecastle support for Supermacs M18 Plaza STUART HOLLY

HE Managing Director of Supermac’s Ireland has expressed surprise at what he terms the wholly mistaken views expressed in the media by some hoteliers and forecourt retailers regarding Pat McDonagh’s plans to build a Motorway Service Area at Junction 12 on the Gort to Limerick Motorway.

It comes as the planning submission date passed yesterday, with many Clare residents adding voice to the debate in recent days.

While a final figure has not yet been confirmed, it's understood somewhere between 100 and 200 people made submissions to Clare County Council's planning department supporting the long-mooted project which Mr McDonagh believes will employ up to 300 people.

these submissions came from members of the community in Clarecastle, who say they are welcoming the prospect of a local employment boost and additional services for the parish of Clarecastle.

Clarecastle Squash Club, which operates from the Clarecastle GAA Sports Complex, told The Clare Echo that they - along with many locals in Clarecastle - are supporting the motorway service station "for job creation in the locality, in the hope that it would keep more young people in the community".

They added, "Also we would hope the local businesses and community groups could use this to grow, as they may be able to attract people into the village who may have never even heard of Clarecastle."

It follows a report in this newspaper last week which revealed that a number of Ennis businesses, including members of the Ennis Chamber of Commerce such as The Old Ground Hotel, would be opposing the planning application due to its nature as an

Galway businessman Mr McDonagh, in a statement issued to The Clare Echo, said the Motorway Service Area development will have exactly the opposite effect on Ennis to that feared by the people who have commented negatively about the project.

Mr McDonagh said his experience in other countries where highways are dominant is that they become exit routes for population where economic activity is sucked out by the major cities and rural towns are left devoid of trade, population and a social identity.

“We have to be really careful in Ireland” he said “to ensure that counties like Clare do not become day-tripper resorts where tourists bed and board in Dublin and commute to Clare with a single stop perhaps at the Cliffs and cross the Shannon without ever putting their hand in their pocket”.

He said he was shocked to hear of hoteliers expressing concern at this prospect. Mr McDonagh went as far as to say that if Clare was not already so well served by the hotel sector, his con-

fidence in the boost in visitor numbers generated by the planned plaza would see him build a hotel in the county.

Mr McDonagh said that apart from visitor trade, the planned plaza represents a tremendous opportunity to promote business in Ennis.

He also said it is his current policy to provide advertising boards free of charge in the plazas where local businesses advertise.

Mr McDonagh also contested that existing fuel retailers, who have expressed concern about increased competition, should understand that fuel retailers on motorway sites carry higher overheads and do not set out to compete with local fuel retailers.

Speaking personally Mr McDonagh said his greatest pleasure in providing Motorway Service Areas comes from the opportunity the plaza provides to employ students on part-time and holiday work with a view to helping them finance their education costs.

As a former teacher himself, he said he realises how valuable it is to help a young person get through college and he said that employment strategies at the Plazas are firmly focused on this objective.

He insisted that the Plaza at full tilt will give direct long-term livelihoods to almost 200 breadwinners and up to 100 others in casual employment.

Mr McDonagh concluded that he is more than happy to meet anyone with concerns regarding the project and said he is fully confident that the planned Plaza will be wholeheartedly welcomed by the people of The Banner County.

Meanwhile, more local voices have added support to the Ennis Chamber members, including Ennis Councillor Johnny Flynn who yesterday lodged an objection to the 25,000 sq ft plaza.

Referring to the development as an "Obama type plaza", Cllr Flynn said that following research on the impact to Clare businesses and due to the large size of the development, he does not consider it "good planning in terms of our efforts to redevelop rural Clare".

He added that 20 rural petrol stations which would be at risk of closing down if the development were to go ahead and added that the award-winning Ennis Coach Park - which has been built to get coach buses traveling to Cliffs of Moher into Ennis to stop so its passangers can shop and eat in the town - would become redundant if Pat McDonagh's development is to go ahead.

300 attend meeting to save rural West Clare post office ELAINE TUBRIDY

ALMOST 300 concerned locals attended a public meeting aimed at saving the post office in Lissycasey earlier this week.

It follows the news last week that six Clare post offices are due to close their doors in the coming months following a number of Clare employees being offered exit packages by An Post.

Meeting organiser and ‘Save Our Post Office’ campaigner Francie Daly told The Clare Echo positive talks were held at the meeting with a view to transferring the Post Office licence to another local premises.

“Everybody wanted it to stay in Lissycasey and the one advantage that we have is that we have a place to put it,” explained Mr Daly.

“Lissycasey has a catchment of about 2,500 people. So it would be a terrible, terrible loss to the people of Lissycasey.

“They’re phasing you out in the nicest possible way. Lissycasey has the second busiest road in the county. It’s crazy. Instead of trying to close them, they should be trying to keep them open,” Mr Daly said.

Francie was keen to express the gratitude of the people of Lissycasey to local Postmistress Mary Hanrahan.

“We have to say she has done a great job.

She’s in there 32 years this November,” Francie added.

Fine Gael TD Joe Carey and Independent TD Dr Michael Harty were both on holidays and sent their apologies. The meeting was however attended by Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley and Minister of State Pat Breen, as well as TD for Roscommon/South Galway Michael Fitzmaurice.

Minister Breen said that the package offered

by An Post was optional and no-one is being forced to take it.

“Obviously there are circumstances why people have took the package, people that wanted to retire, maybe not that much business doing in the post office and maybe they had given a long service,” the Ballynacally man told The Clare Echo.

“I want to pay tribute to all the postmasters who are retiring. An Post are now processing those applications and they will make a decision on which post offices will close at the end of August.

“It’s up to any individuals or community groups to appeal this process with independent assessors,” he said.

Minister Breen urged all those opposed to post office closures to put a plan in place to appeal the process.

He also encouraged more people to use their local post office to ensure their continued viability.

“If you don’t use the local post office, it won’t stay open,” Minister Breen added.

Meanwhile, there will be a public meeting to discuss the closure of the post office in Cooraclare tonight (Thursday) in the community hall at 9pm.

‘Doolin an amazing place’ IBAL litter report rubbished ELAINE TUBRIDY

HE first ever Irish Business Against Litter report has classed Doolin as a ‘litter blackspot’.

Doolin2Aran Ferries Director Eugene Garrihy has refuted the report, calling it “way off the wall”.

Speaking on Clare FM, Mr Garrihy said: “Doolin is an amazing place of heritage and culture and we get the culturally curious people here and they’re very conscious of the environment and the Cliffs of Moher and Burren Geo Park”.

Mr Garrihy added that the report could help Clare County Council to focus on doing a sweep of the area a couple of times a week to keep it in peak condition.

“That’s the difference between actually having a pristine area and some areas where you might get rubbish in grykes or blow into private land,” he said. The IBAL report

found that 40 per cent of Ireland’s rivers, beaches and harbours were littered or heavily littered.

Lahinch was identified as ‘littered’ and Kilkee was found to be ‘moderately littered’. IBAL surveyed 40 beaches, harbours and rivers, with only four of those surveyed found to be “clean to European norms”.

Fianna Fáil General Election Candidate Dr John Hillery has said that villages on the Wild Atlantic Way, such as Doolin, must be adequately resourced to deal with the impact of increased tourist activity due to the success of the Wild Atlantic Way. “The IBAL survey results is a warning to everyone that if we want the Wild Atlantic Way to continue to drive tourism and economic growth in the West, we must start to start deal with the impacts of more tourists on the ground. Our environment is one of our very best assets. We need to protect and preserve it. This can be achieved by all the stakeholders coming together and by working in unison,” concluded Dr Hillery.

Drought uncovers geological history

R

ECENT low water levels due to the prolonged drought have revealed previously unseen rocks on the shore of Lickeen Lake that indicate the North Clare lake may have been formed along a zone of folded and faulted rock that resulted from continental collision almost 300 million years ago.

The rocks (pictured) were discovered by Burren & Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Geopark and Clare County Co geologist Dr Eamon Doyle and his son Alan while fishing on the lake, between Kilfenora and Ennistymon.

Dr. Doyle explained that while folded and faulted rocks are well known from the Loop Head area, particularly around the Bridges of Ross, they have not been recorded in the North Clare area before.

“Once Alan pointed out the

outcrop I immediately saw the rocks were tilted to a vertical position which is completely different to the almost horizontal layers of rock we typically find in this area.”

He continued, “What is particularly interesting is that the rocks are oriented across the deepest part of the lake. These layers of folded and faulted rock would have weathered easier than the surrounding rock and when the ice sheets covered Clare 20,000 years ago they would have eroded deeper there and left a 20m deep depression which became what we now know as Lickeen Lake after the ice melted.

“If it hadn’t been for that, the lake would have been shallower and it is unlikely that the water levels in Lickeen would be sufficient to supply most of North Clare. This is a great example of how the 300 million years of geological history has a direct impact on our lives today."

Bank Place Bridge to close for repair works BANK Place Bridge in Ennis will undergo repair works over the next six weeks.

Clare County Council says the rehabilitation works on the 17-metre long bridge are scheduled to commence tomorrow (Tuesday) and will be completed by the end of September.

Pedestrian access to businesses and premises on Bank Place and on Bindon Street will be maintained for the duration of the works while vehicular access will be maintained under a Stop/Go and Traffic Light system. No parking will be permitted on either side of the bridge from Easons/AIB to the Post Office, during the topside works.

The works, which are being carried out by Triur Construction Ltd. on behalf of Clare County Council, include removal of the existing road surface, vegetation clearance, alterations to gullies, repairs to the soffit of the bridge beams, patch repairs to the deck slab soffit, cleaning and patch repair of the parapets, removal of the existing concrete road slabs, repairs to joints and resurfacing the road.

Scully nets €20k for charity on ‘Irish Camino’ walk along West

E’S run across the polar ice-cap at the North Pole, competed in Africa’s biggest road race, walked across Ireland and done the Camino de Santiago a few times but Clare Echo columnist Ronan Scully admits that he finally met his match when he recently attempted to walk from Dingle Bay to Galway Bay via Clare and the Burren just over 300km on foot.

The one-time ‘Operation Transformation’ leader completed his eight-day ‘Bay to Bay Charity Walk’ from Dingle Bay to Galway Bay blistered but unbowed, as he succeeded in raising €20,000 for his chosen charities in Ireland and Africa.

Joined along the way by friends and supporters, Ronan used the 300km charity challenge as a way to make his recent 51st birthday an event to remember.

Over 45s urged to ‘Move 4 Life’ ADVERTORIAL

FOUR hubs in Clare are taking part in a trial as part of a study designed to increase physical activity among over 45s.

A team of researchers, practitioners and policy makers are undertaking research to increase population levels of physical activity in Ireland. The team, being led

by Professor Catherine Woods from the University of Limerick, brings together expertise from sport and exercise science, health, psychology, implementation science and the community. The University of Limerick, the NUIG, Limerick and Clare Local Sports Partnerships, Age and Opportunity, and the Health Services Executive are combining to tackle this challenge. The vision is that adults 45+ will live a more active and healthy lifestyle as a result of being part of Move 4 Life (M4L).

The national physical activity guidelines (PAGL) suggest that all adults should be active for 30 minutes a day of moderate activity five days a week, with a focus on aerobic activity, muscle-strengthening and balance. Yet few meet these, including at least 63 per cent of people in Limerick and 57 per cent in Clare.

Being active has significant benefits for health and wellbeing: There is significant evidence that meeting PAGL promotes wellbeing, physical and mental health, prevents disease, improves quality of life and has economic, social and cultural benefits. Being inactive has significant consequences. The purpose of M4L is to test if broadening the reach of the professional to the participants (inactive 45+) is feasible

and has any potential for impact.

Our first objective is to conduct key informant interviews with participants, staff and volunteers from best practice physical activity programmes for the 45+.

This information will help us understand effective programme design, recruitment, retention from their perspective; with emphasis on strategies for programme sustainability and implementation. Objective two is to produce and pre-test the M4L intervention with stakeholders. Once complete, we will test the M4L intervention. Our primary outcome is minutes of physical activity and secondary outcomes include reduction in sedentary behaviour, cost effectiveness and behaviour change strategy use. For this trial, 8 community sport and physical activity HUBS across Clare and Limerick will be recruited, three HUBS will receive the M4L intervention, three will run their programmes as normal and two will act as true case control groups and take part in assessments only.

Over 500 participants will complete a battery of physical tests, wear a device to monitor their activity levels objectively and complete questionnaires at baseline (T0), at 3 (T1) and 6 (T2) months. Participants will be interviewed at the end of the programme to give thoughts on what worked and what could be improved. Finally, we intend to disseminate our results, several strategies including publication of the report, and interviews and a capacity building workshop at the end of the project are part of our programme of work.

Ronan Scully is hoping to reach €20,000 for charities Gorta-Self Help Africa, the Rape Crisis Centre and Rosabels Rooms in partnership with The Irish Hospice Foundation. The money raised will go to a range of projects supporting vulnerable women and children in Ireland and in Africa.

Clare County Council, along with the Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL), is facilitating the broadcast.

During the broadcast, visitors to the lighthouse will be able to listen into communications with other participating ham radio operators broadcasting from 373 other

lighthouses and lightships in 50 countries. Last year, Limerick Radio Club members based at Loop Head Lighthouse successfully connected with fellow enthusiasts as far away as Hawaii and Australia.

The annual event, which is sponsored of the Ayr Amateur Radio Group (AARG) in Scotland, is held on the third full weekend in August starting at 0001 UTC on Saturday and finishing at 2359 UTC on Sunday.

Loop Head Lighthouse will remain open daily (10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.) until 4 November. Admission to the lighthouse, which includes the exhibition and guided tour of the site, is Adults (€5), Children (€2) and Family Passes for up to 2 adults + 3 children (€12).

URRAY for grandparents! Last week Nana took baby Hanorah for a few hours while I ventured to Ladies Day at the Dublin Horseshow.

In the early days of parenthood you spend a lot of time in pjs and tracksuits (comfort is key!) so it was lovely to get the glad rags on for a few hours and admire all the style at the RDS. My sister Doireann was playing MC for the afternoon so I was delighted to be there to support her and was also thrilled to wear a funky hat by Clare milliner Margaret O’Connor who also won Most Creative Hat on the day worn by Helen Quelly.

During my pregnancy I was keen to stay active and loved swimming, yoga, trekking and walking but running just wasn’t for me. It’s been 10 months since I jogged but I attempted my first run last week. I began with a 3.5km loop and needless to say I felt every stride! However, it’s great to be back feeling myself and hopefully I can build my fitness

Ennis artist exhibits new work at Kilkenny Arts Festival ENNIS-BASED artist Ronan Murphy is currently exhibiting his art work at the Link Gallery in Kilkenny until 19 August, as part of a group exhibition. ‘Unhindered’ is an exhibition curated by the studio artists of KCAT, Callan, as part of Kilkenny Arts Festival. The exhibition features an array of painting and sculptural artworks from artists making work in supportive studio settings in Ireland.

Ronan creates work across a number of disciplines including ceramics, writing and illustration.

At present his creative practise is supported at the Dulick Centre in Ennis. He is currently devising a new body of ceramic work that is inspired by new texts that he is writing, this project funded by the Clare Arts Office.

Organisations represented in the exhibition include: Arts Ability Cumas (Wexford), DAV (Dublin), GASP (Cork), KCAT Studio (Kilkenny), Luisne Art (Mayo), Mayfield, Cuig (Cork) and the Dulick Centre (Clare).

RELAND’S top Country stars headline Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival The biggest stars of the Irish country music scene will headline this year’s ‘Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival’ in September.

Lisa McHugh, Declan Nerney and Gerry Guthrie, will perform on the opening weekend of the festival on the 31st August to 1st September followed by Mike Denver, Derek Ryan and Cliona Hagan on the 7th and 8th September at the Marquee.

This year’s festival is jam packed with entertainment, with music and dancing in all venues in every day in September from 11am in the morning to late. A LITTLE TASTE OF HEAVEN A TASTE of Lough Derg moves into the penultimate month of the food series this month.

From Tuamgraney to Terryglass, the month is offering a selection of events that showcase Lough Derg as well as the food in the area. Visitors and locals are invited to take part in picnics, high teas, village tours, and chocolate making sessions conducted by the businesses that encircle the lake.

August weather brings back cooler evenings and fresh winds, and A Taste of Lough Derg brings in the summer harvest season. Visitors to our lake region in August will be treated to events featuring honey, edible flowers and orchard trips.

HAT Pat McDonagh is proposing is tasty and tempting. At least 150 jobs and a new convenient area to feed and fuel up before a long journey – where do I sign up? It will surely be welcomed, particularly by tour bus operators and those travelling from Dublin to West and North Clare. Now, with the arrival of the Banner’s version of the Barack Obama Plaza (Muhammad Ali Plaza, anyone?), visitors can fly straight on past Ennis as if it doesn’t exist... Hold on, a closer look might be required here.

Ennis is arguably the last bastion of a thriving, accessible rural lifestyle in Clare.

It’s also home to roughly a quarter of our population and a decision on this big scale development will not be taken lightly by the council’s planning department. And part of their decision process will include looking at submissions, for and against.

On paper, as discussed in our report on page four, some Ennis businesses say no, and some Clarecastle residents say yes.

Both are well within their rights, but what’s the right thing to do here?

Last week businesses from Ennis Chamber confirmed that they would object on the basis that it would be an ‘online development’, meaning it will be near the Ennis/ Clarecastle exit of the M18 and easily accessible from the town without the need to exit onto the motorway.

The community of Clarecastle has now thrown weight behind the project, with The Clare Echo learning that more than 100 letters have been signed and submitted to the council’s planning department in favour of the 25,000 sq ft service station, a movement which was spearheaded by a number of community leaders in Clarecastle.

What’s to be gained? Well, obviously there are some jobs, which can’t be sniffed at in a time when Roche is in the process of closing, and the prospect of young people staying in the village.

Pat McDonagh, undoubtably, is a great supporter of local community and has proved that time and again. Earlier this week, it was pointed out in another local newspaper column that he provided €250,000 to become a headline sponsor of the Fleadh when it came to Ennis. What wasn’t mentioned was Ennis businesses also provided massive financial support to Fleadh Cheoil. Anyway, this is not a pissing contest and none of that is relavent because our communities should not be bought and sold, especially at the cost of our thriving town centre.

Pat McDonagh told The Clare Echo that he was surprised that local businesses had objected to his development, that this development will help business in Ennis. I believe he was being completely genuine.

However, surely members of Ennis Chamber are better placed to judge how Ennis

The nature of this development as ‘online’ is the main crux of the issue for Ennis businesses. This isn’t just targetting commutors travelling on the Tuam-Limerick axis - people living in the town of Ennis, along with those travelling into Clare’s tourist regions, are also most welcome. And why is that such a big deal?

Many of these businesspeople objecting are true guardians of our town centre. They have been proactive community members and persevered in busniess to keep the town thriving through a difficult economic period. Are they objecting to this development for the detriment of the town? No. Is it because they don’t like Pat McDonagh?

Of course not. These businesses are doing their best to ensure that the town centre doesn’t die and they have done a bloody good job so far. Even some of the council’s good work in promoting Ennis is at risk of being undone. Just this week, Friars Walk Coach Park was nominated for a national award as a ‘coach-friendly destination’. It’s not unfathomable that this will become obsolete with a service area at the gateway to our county town. Yet still, there has been anger from sections of the public to those objecting to the development.

One person wrote in an online post to Cllr Johnny Flynn that he had a “very short sighted attitude” in objecting to the proposal due to the “jobs boost to the Doora and Clarecastle area as well as Quin (which is outside your area)”.

They continued, “Ennis has over invested in tourism for decades to the detriment of sustainable, year round jobs that would benefit everyone. As for the impact on rural areas? I can only see positives, job creation is the most important one.”

I have a number of close links to Kerry, and many people there are of the opinion that Manor Shopping Centre had an irreversible impact on Tralee. While it’s a different development to the one planned in Ennis, it should still serve as a warning.

Finally, there should be a level of empathy for locally owned garages who will undoubtably be directly impacted by a development of this scale. So while this idea is tasty and tempting, I believe the local business are right in their preempting.

Just one simple hard fact; we need to talk about our drinking.

Maybe I’m grouchier but over the past two weekends in Ennis I witness scenes that were both infuriating and embarrassing to watch.

Last weekend I came home for a family occasion and headed into town to socialise with my brother who was home from the UK. The week previous, like many hurling fans, I was drowning my sorrows after the heartbreak in Thurles but also celebrating the phenomenal year of entertainment our hurlers gave us. Both nights I was in a total of three pubs.

Both nights, I immediately left one bar in disgust at the behaviour.

I often see people drinking far more than they’re capable of. This isn’t anything new. Hell, I’ve done it myself in the past, not that I’m proud of it. That isn’t the main symptom of the problem, however.

It’s the behaviour causes an issue for everyone else.

At one point on the bank holiday Sunday I witnessed two males at a bar hassle the girl being served in an attempt to make her take their order as well. It was clear that she was made feel very uncomfortable by their persistent requests.

Luckily a male member of staff intervened to deflect their attention from the young woman. There was widespread boorish and outlandish behaviour throughout the pub at the time and staff simply could not be expected to marshal the clientele in the packedout pub. I had just left a quiet pub to meet someone at this location but quickly opted to leave. Such was the scale of the drunkenness that I, a 32-year-old rugby playing male, didn’t feel comfortable. What was surprising was it wasn’t the

stereotypical 18 to 24 year old, but the 25 to 40 year olds that were unhinged with booze.

Last Saturday night, once again I found myself in a different pub, one I had retreated to on the previous bank holiday Sunday for a much more enjoyable, social time, only to find similar scenes to that I had hastily left six days previously. Once again, my older brother and I left almost as quickly as we’d entered leaving the most of our drinks behind. Once again, those getting rowdy, falling into other patrons and acting like louts were the 25 to 40-year-old males.

There’s no excuse for acting the maggot at this age.

You’re old enough to know your limits. Even then, in the 14 years since I started socialising late at night, no amount of alcohol has ever made me feel the need to knock into people looking to start a fight. What is it with these men that sees such violence emerge when they have a few too many on board? I’m afraid the answers to that question are way too long for a column like this. If someone like me in the company of a group of male friends is as put out by the carryon of these so-called “men”, I can only imagine how frightening and unsettling it can be for young women. There is not a single female friend I know that hasn’t been inappropriately touched or groped on nights out.

Not one. Statistics released

by NUI Galway last week showed that by third year of college, 70% of female university students in Ireland, and 40% of male students had experienced unwanted sexual physical contact. This is a statistic I’m not surprised by and a number that unfortunately only continues to rise as the age cohort gets older.

So why are we obsessed with alcohol in Ireland?

It’s not something new.

In Roman times, their

historians were aghast at the drinking habits of the Celts. They marvelled how these barbarians would drink the wine the Romans traded with them straight from the barrel instead of diluting it as the more refined Romans did. So the story goes anyway. It’s a funny anecdote but our current issue stems from a purely cultural habit. A lot stems from our climate in that, good summer this year aside, we have little opportunity to get out and enjoy our beautiful country and beaches. The cinema is popular in Ireland as one of the very few non-alcoholic activities that is indoors. Concerts, theatre, sports spectating and other evening pursuits are all associated with alcohol. We need to break those links.

The prevalence of alcohol in our society means that isolation, loneliness, and repressed anger issues become magnified and spill over with drink. No where is this more prevalent when you look at alcohols links with depression and suicide in Ireland.

Nevertheless, we are capable of changing alcohol related culture. We did so with drink driving. It’s now socially unacceptable to get behind the wheel under the influence. Why then do we still laugh and even “big up” people for getting so drunk they fall over?

We should be taking them aside and telling them to watch their intake and if it persists, asking them if they need help. Until we socially take on our problem drinking, no measure, including minimum unit pricing, will curb the number of people ending up in our Emergency Departments, our Garda Stations for drunk and disorderly or even violent conduct, or in graveyards due to avoidable alcohol related illnesses or fatal “one-punch” attacks. Ireland, you’ve had too much to drink. It’s time we had a chat.

Leaving Cert helpline to operate until first offers

THE National Parents Council post primary Leaving Cert Helpline 1800 265 165 will operate from Wednesday 15 to Wednesday 22 August. This period covers the release of the results through to the first round of offers from the Central Applications Office. This year, approximately 57,000 students sat the Leaving Cert.

The Helpline supports students and parents by reducing stress through providing accurate information and counselling.

The phones will be staffed by members of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors, who will assist callers with up to date information on all the issues that arise at this time. These will range from, appeal procedures, points, CAO applications and non-CAO options.

SUSI, the Student Universal Support Ireland, will also have a representative on hand to advise on any grant related queries.

The Helpline is sponsored by the Irish Independent and the Department of Education and Skills. This year the event is hosted in the Croke Park Media Centre courtesy of the GAA Community Programme.

In 2017, the Helpline had over 4,300 que-

ries that were answered over the six days. It saw an increase of over 40 per cent on the previous year. Of particular interest was an increase in fathers accessing the service.

MICHAEL Keating from Ruan regretted leaving school early and was unsure what to do before coming to Clare National Learning Network. Michael has built up his confidence, completed a media production course, and is one step closer to becoming a sports journalist.

“I didn’t finish school and after leaving I went on to do a couple of different Community Employment (CE) schemes. I regretted not taking school seriously. I started looking for direction and advice as to how to progress.

I came to a stage in my life when I decided that I wanted to have a professional career in the future.

“Because I didn’t complete my Leaving Cert, I needed a new route to achieve my goal which was journalism with a particular interest in sport. When I went researching what to do next, I came across information on National Learning Network. I visited the Ennis office and my new career started from there. I was given a choice to go on a trial period, but I knew immediately there was no need because I knew it was the right course for me to move forward. I have never looked back since..

“As far as my career aspirations go, joining NLN as a student was the most important and positive choice I ever made. I completed Level 3 Introductory Skills in August 2017, and also a module in the evenings in Limerick College of Further Education (LCFE). I achieved an Outstanding Achievement Award from NLN. “Doing this has given me the confidence to apply to LCFE where, this month, I graduated from the Level 5 course with very respectable results. I have now been accepted onto Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Media Production and Radio. I feel I will achieve this because I now feel more self-assured and confident in myself. Also, I will check out any supports that are available to me through LCFE and avail of these. My eventual goal is to become a sports journalist or correspondent. I couldn’t have done this without the help of NLN.”

‘Parents of schoolkids are forced into risky loans’

ELAYS in applications for Back to School payments are forcing parents into risky loans – that is the arning being sent out by General Election Candidate Cllr Mike McKee. Clare General Election Candidate and Sinn Féin Cllr Mike McKee has raised concern that delays in the processing of the Back to School Clothing & Footwear Allowance will force parents in Clare into taking high interest risky loans.

With secondary and primary school children’s return to eductaion just around the corner, Cllr

Mike McKee revealed to The Clare Echo: “I have been contacted by Clare parents in panic at the fact that they are yet to receive the Back to School Clothing & Footwear Allowance payment.”

“We are just over two weeks away from back to school and parents are struggling with the enormous costs involved for school,” he continued.

“The centre dealing with the payment will be closed this week and next week, the Sinn Féin spokesperson for Employment Affairs & Social Protection John Brady TD has been informed.

“With the processing team currently dealing with applications received on July 6th and they are in

the middle of manually processing up to 50,000 applications.”

Cllr Mike McKee concluded that with is being a busy time of year for parents across Clare, there are a lack of resources in place: “Parents, in Clare have no idea what is going on, and they have no idea when they will receive their payment.

“The only option being left to them is to seek high interest and high risk loans.”

“There is no excuse for delays to these payments, this is the busiest time of year for parents, and clearly the system has failed to put the necessary resources in place on time.”

With the results now out, Citizens Information gives some practical advice for Clare school leavers APPEALING YOUR RESULTS Citizens Information often get queries at this time of year from students and parents who are unhappy with the result in one of their subjects. Citizens Information advise that if you are not satisfied with the mark, you can appeal the result to the State Examinations Commission (SEC). Before you appeal, you can view your examination script at the school where you sat the exam. When you get your exam results, your school will get a personalised application form for you. If you want to view your exam script, you must complete this form and return it to your school by August 21, 2018.

The Organising Superintendent appointed by the SEC will assign you to one of the viewing sessions, on either August 31 or September 1. You can only view your scripts from the written examinations – not the results of oral or practical examinations.

If you decide to appeal a result, you can use the online appeals application service. This service will be available from 12 noon on August 20. You need your exam number and PIN to access this service. When you apply online and pay the fee, you will get an Appeal Confirmation Form, which you must print and bring to the Organising Superintendent in your school no later than September 3, 2018.

If you cannot use the online service, you must contact the SEC for a personalised appeal application form, pay the appeal fee in a bank and get the bank to stamp the form to confirm payment.

Bring the stamped form to the Organising Superintendent in your school no later than September 3, 2018.

Your script will then be sent to an appeal examiner for re-marking.

The appeal fee is €40 per subject for the Established Leaving Certificate. The appeal fee for Applied Leaving Cert is €15.50 per subject. You get this fee back if your result is upgraded.

APPRENTICESHIPS An apprenticeship is the recognised way people are trained in a trade or profession. It involves training on-the-job with an employer and training off-the-job in an education centre. To be eligible for an apprenticeship, you must be at least 16 and have at least a grade D in five subjects in the Junior Cert.

However, some employers may only take on an apprentice with higher qualifications or may have other requirements.

If you don’t have the required qualifications, you might still be able to do an apprenticeship – you should check with your local Education and Training Board (ETB).

There are apprenticeships in car-

pentry, plumbing, car mechanics and electrical trades, for example. This type of apprenticeship usually lasts for four years. You should contact the apprenticeship section of your local ETB. New occupational apprenticeships are being developed in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), medical technology, insurance, finance, accountancy, logistics and hospitality.

These apprenticeships last two to four years. For these, you should apply to the industry lead for the apprenticeship that you are interested in. You can also contact the apprenticeship section of the local ETB. While you’re training on-the-job, your employer will pay a recommended apprenticeship wage. If your training is in certain sectors, SOLAS pays a weekly allowance equal to that wage while you’re training off-thejob. In all other sectors, your off-the-job payments will depend on your employer, although SOLAS will contribute to travel and accommodation costs.

HELP WITH SCHOOL COSTS The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is a means-tested onceoff payment aimed at helping families with the costs associated with children returning to school in autumn. To qualify for the Allowance, the applicant must be in receipt of certain social welfare payments or taking part in training, employment or adult education schemes, with total household income below a certain threshold.

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is available for schoolchildren aged four up to 22 for students in second level. It is paid at a rate of €125 for children aged 4-11 and €250 for children aged 12 years +.

The Allowance is paid in respect of eligible school children between the ages of four and 17 on or before September 30, 2018 and eligible students between the ages of 18 and 22 on or before September 30 who are in full-time second level education.

Application forms are available on welfare.ie, or from your local Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Branch Office.

You can also request a form by texting ‘Form BTSCFA’ followed by your name and address to 51909 or by emailing the Department at BSCFA@welfare.ie.

The Department of Education and Skills also runs a School Books Grant Scheme. Some schools run a Textbook Rental Scheme or can help with the cost of buying textbooks. You should contact the principal of your children’s school to find out if any of these options are available.

Child’s vision is responsible for 80% of their learning

l ABILITY TO LEARN: Regular eye check are important not just for education, but also long-term health of a child

YOUR child’s vision is responsible for about 80% of a child’s learning during their first 12 years. This is a surprisingly high amount and yet our children’s eyes have come under even more pressure in the digital world we now live in.

In primary school a simple vision screening test is carried out by a nurse. This is very worthwhile and while your child may pass this, it is vital to remember that this is a simple screening which only checks your child’s visual acuity rather than being a comprehensive eye exam conducted by an experienced optometrist. We not only check your child’s vision, but also conduct a complete health check of your child’s eyes, from front to back. As an optometrist I cannot stress enough the importance of bringing children for a full eye exam to ensure they are reaching their full academic potential. You have to remember, they may not be aware it is incorrect for things to be constantly blurry.

We all want our kids to be their best and having an eye test can give them the start they need. A child’s eyes are constantly in use, whether they’re reading, writing, using a computer or playing sports. Children often assume their vision is just like everyone else’s, which means that vision problems can easily

go undetected. Poor vision can interfere with their ability to learn and meet their full potential, and can even compromise their physical, emotional and social development.

The importance of an eye test for all children before they start school (and every year after) cannot be overstated. Often, children may have a difference between their two eyes and if this isn’t picked up at a young age they may develop a “lazy eye” which can reduce their 3D vision. Also, if your child has a colour vision defect they cannot pursue certain careers such as an electrician or a plumber. The earlier in life these defects are recognised the better.

Seeing the optometrist regularly as your child continues to grow through primary school and beyond means any changes in their vision can be detected.

Having worked in the UK after my training was complete a number of years ago, I noticed a marked difference in the approach by parents to routine eye exams. It’s almost a given over there that a child will get their annual eye exam. While our approach in Ireland is improving, we’re still a good step off where we should be. My advice? Be sure to add an eye exam to your school checklist because it is arguably the most important test they will have this year.

TUDENTS across the country received their Leaving Cert results yesterday including more than 2,000 in County Clare alone. Included in that figure were students from Ennis Community College and Gaelcholáiste an Chláir.

Yesterday morning students at Ennis Community College and Gaelcholáiste an Chláir students joined over 57,000 other across the country in receiving their Leaving Cert results.

Again this year students performed well with many achieving well above the 500 points level.

Principal Brian O’Donoghue, pictured right with Ennis Community College Student Rediet Mulugeta and her two brothers, said “I am delighted for our students and I wish to congratulate all of them.

Try new foods – trying new foods from an early age plays a huge role in a child’s willingness and acceptance of different foods. Children’s food preferences evolve as their palates mature, so continuously

encouraging them to try new and different foods is a crucial step in their development of good eating habits.

Shake things up – variety is key, not only does variation in the diet provide nutritional benefits, but reduces boredom and lack of interest in food. This is particularly important for children and teenagers, as they can be prone to becoming fussy eaters.

Tailor lunches to the time of year – for example, a flask of soup with brown bread during the cold, winter months or pasta salad during spring and summer.

Make it look appetising – it is worth spending that extra few minutes on presentation, especially for younger children.

Aim for a variety of shapes, colours and textures in the lunchbox. The more pleasing a packed lunch looks; the more likely kids are to eat and enjoy it. It may be worth investing in colourful, easy-open Tupperware, lunchboxes and thermos flasks to liven up the school lunchtime.

Be prepared and organised – preparation in advance will not only save you time, but will reduce the chances of opting for last minute ready-made lunches or convenience foods which can be high in sugar, fat and salt.

Don’t: Don’t leave it to the last minute – lack of time may increase the chance of filling lunchboxes with unhealthy, convenience foods.

Don’t repeat the same lunches over and over – while it’s a good idea to establish a number of reliable lunches that work, try not to overdo it. Mixing it up will increase the variety of nutrients provided.

Don’t forget about portion size – this should be specifically tailored to your child/teens age, size and activity levels.

Younger children will generally need smaller portions than older or more active children.

Don’t forget about hydration – research suggests dehydration can lead to reduced concentration and performance in children. Water and milk are two excellent tooth-friendly choices; try to avoid sugary drinks.

Don’t forget about breakfast – it’s no myth that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’. Break the overnight fast and set the school goers up with a bowl of milky porridge or mixed berries with yogurt and granola. It can be a long wait until small break, so opt for a breakfast that will fill and fuel!

Quick tip: Lunchbox Snacks: - Carrot and red pepper sticks with hummus Cubed cheddar cheese with grapes - Fruit salad with yogurt and seeds - Fresh fruit smoothie made with milk or yogurt.

Plant a heart and soul garden

T

HERE are times on our journey through life that we simply need to tend to our heart and soul just like we tend to our body. We should try if we can, although the unpredictability of life can hamper it, but we should always try to make a beautiful garden of our soul.

There is much talk in our world today about tending to the garden of our bodies.

All types of media pour out the idea of taking care of one’s body, so we can be healthy, attractive and live longer. But what of our soul?

Surely, it has importance as well. Perhaps even more than we think! Every day, we have a choice whether or not to tend to our soul garden. Yes, we can neglect it if we want. But I feel when you neglect your soul garden, the beauty and radiance of who you really are can become overgrown with weeds of despair, busyness, worry, fear, ego importance or confusion.

We can lose sight of who we really are. For me looking after the life of your spirit and soul is like cultivating a real garden. A beautiful and balanced garden does not happen without effort.

An important step in garden maintenance is to cultivate the source of the garden which is the soil and I always do this for my soul garden through prayer, contemplation and reflection.

With proper care, reflection, contemplation, prayer and love, our spirit and soul garden can thrive and flourish. However, should we neglect ourselves and our soul garden, we wilt, sink, fade, and wither like untended flowers.

A story from my Nana Scully’s prayerbook might help.

THE STORY OF JOHN’S GARDEN John was a quiet man. He didn’t talk much. He would always greet you with a big smile and a firm handshake. Even after living in our parish community for over 50 years, no one could really say they knew him very well. Before his retirement, he took the city link red bus to work each morning. The lone sight of him walking down the road to the bus stop often worried us.

He had a slight limp from an old sporting accident. Watching him,

we worried he may not make it through our changing community with its ever-increasing random violence, gangs and drug activity.

When he saw the flyer on our local parish church bulletin board asking for volunteers for caring for the gardens around our beautiful church, he responded in his characteristically unassuming manner. Without fanfare, he just signed up.

He was well into his 80th year when the very thing we had always feared finally happened.

He was just finishing his watering the flowers and gardens for the day when three hooligans approached him. Ignoring their attempt to intimidate him, he simply asked, “Would you like a drink from the hose?” The tallest and toughest-looking of the three said, “Yeah, sure,” with a cheeky smile.

As John offered the hose to him, the other two grabbed John’s arm, throwing him down.

As the hose snaked crazily over the ground, dousing everything in its way, John’s assailants stole his retirement watch and his wallet, and then fled. John tried to get himself up, but he had been thrown down on his bad leg. He lay there trying to gather himself as the priest and sacristan came running out to help him.

Although the priest had witnessed the attack from his window, he couldn’t get there fast enough to stop it. “John, are you okay? Are you hurt?” the priest kept asking as he helped John to his feet. John just passed a hand over his brow and sighed, shaking his head. “Just some young

hooligans. I hope they’ll wise-up someday.” His wet clothes clung to his slight frame as he bent to pick up the hose. He adjusted the nozzle again and started to water.

Confused and a little concerned, the priest asked, “John, what are you doing?” “I’ve got to finish my watering. It’s been very dry lately,” came the calm reply. Satisfying himself that John really was alright, the priest could only marvel. John was a man from a different time and place.

A few weeks later the three returned.

Just as before, their threat was unchallenged.

John again offered them a drink from his hose. This time they didn’t rob him. They wrenched the hose from his hand and drenched him head to foot in the icy water.

When they had finished their humiliation of him, they sauntered off down the road, throwing catcalls and curses, falling over one another laughing at the hilarity of what they had just done. John just watched them.

Then he turned toward the warmth giving sun, picked up his hose, and went on with his watering. The summer was quickly fading into autumn. John was doing some tilling when he was startled by the sudden approach of someone behind him.

He stumbled and fell into some evergreen branches. As he struggled to regain his footing, he turned to see the tall leader of his summer tormentors reaching down for him.

He braced himself for the expected attack. “Don’t worry old man. I’m not going to hurt you this time.”

The young man spoke softly, still offering the tattooed and scarred hand to John. As he helped John get up, the man pulled a crumpled bag from his pocket and handed it to John.

“What’s this?” John asked. “It’s your stuff,” the man explained.

“It’s your stuff back. Even the money in your wallet.” “I don’t understand,” John said. “Why would you help me now?”

The young man shifted his feet, seeming embarrassed and ill at ease. “I learned something from you,” he said. “I ran with the hooligans and hurt people like you.

We picked you because you were old and we knew we could do it.

But every time we came and did something to you, instead of yelling and fighting back, you tried to give us a drink. You didn’t hate us for hating you. You kept showing love against our hate.” He stopped for a moment. “I couldn’t sleep after we stole your stuff, so here it is back.” He paused for another awkward moment, not knowing what more there was to say. “That bag’s my way of saying thanks for straightening me out, I guess.” And with that, he walked off down the road. John looked down at the sack in his hands and gingerly opened it. He took out his retirement watch and put it back on his wrist. Opening his wallet, he checked for his wedding photo. He gazed for a moment at the young bride that still smiled back at him from all those years ago. He died one cold day after Christmas that winter.

Many people attended his funeral in spite of the weather. In particular, the priest noticed a tall young man that he didn’t know sitting quietly in a distant corner of the church. The priest spoke of John’s garden as a lesson in life.

In a voice with shed tears, he said, “Do your best in life and make the garden of your soul as beautiful as John’s garden. We will never forget John and his garden made beautiful by his soul.”

The following spring another flyer went up in the parish church bulletin board. It read: “Person needed to care for John’s soul garden.”

The flyer went unnoticed by the busy parishioners until one day when a knock was heard at the priest’s office door. Opening the door, the priest saw a pair of

scarred and tattooed hands holding the flyer. “I believe this is my job, if you’ll have me,” the young man said. The priest recognized him as the same young man who had returned the stolen watch and wallet to John. He knew that John’s kindness had turned this young man’s life around. As the priest handed him the keys to the garden shed, he said, “Yes, go take care of John’s garden and honor him and make a beautiful garden of your soul.”

The man went to work and, over the next several years, he tended the flowers and vegetables just as John had done. In that time, he went to college, got married, and became a prominent member of the parish and community. But he never forgot his promise to John’s memory and kept the garden as beautiful as he thought John would have kept it.

One day he approached the priest and told him that he couldn’t care for the garden any longer. He explained with a shy and happy smile, “My wife just had a baby boy last night, and she’s bringing him home on Saturday.”

SOUND AND MUSIC PROJECT FOR WEST CLARE A sound and music research project based in West Clare focusing on the complex legacy of immigration and assimilation has been commissioned by Clare County Council Arts Office under Gaining Ground, a major new Public Art programme for County Clare.

The ‘Gangani Legacy’ project is being undertaken by composer Ian Wilson and will begin in the coming weeks.

The project includes the creation of a 40-minute sound work featuring spoken and musical contributions from people of all backgrounds throughout West Clare and a score for two musicians; Dublin based Japanese pianist Izumi Kimura and the renowned, Joe O’Callaghan, a Clare-born guitarist.

The project will explore the possible or conceivable influences of immigration and assimilation on people living in Clare, both from an indigenous and outsider perspective; and how these might be found in certain place names, aspects of language or dialect, customs and idioms, heritage and culture, employment, sport and local attitudes.

The outcome of the project will be two performances in West Clare and the availability of a high quality CD recording of the work.

Curated by Sally O’Leary of Asprey Arts, in collaboration with Clare County Council Arts Office, Gaining Ground has been developed using funds allocated from the pooled resources of the Per Cent For Art Scheme. The programme has been designed to take place over the next 2 years, and will culminate in an International Rural Arts Symposium in 2020. As part of the programme, projects will be selected to take place in North and West Clare and Shannon Town. There will also be a programme titled Reflections, which will be integral to the whole project and will involve research, evaluation and critical writing which will be reflected at the Symposium in 2020.

The first of the commissions was announced last month.

‘Folk Radio’, curated by Anne Mullee, with artist Tom Flanagan and curatorial advisor, Deirdre O’Mahony, is a concept for a new artists-led, online radio station and digital sound archive, based at X-PO in Kilnaboy.

KDHS EXHIBITION It is not long after that until Heritage Week, in which KDHS has been involved since its establishment in 2012. This year, the society is planning An Exhibition of Kilrush Ceramics. The exhibition is now scheduled for 5pm-8pm in the Teach Ceoil on Sunday 19 August, slightly later than originally advertised in order to avoid a clash with the All-Ireland Hurling Final. Kilrush Ceramics was established in 1961 and traded until 1983. The exhibition will present a selection of its products including dinner sets, tea sets, vases and collectibles. From 1961 to 1983, Kilrush Ceramics employed over 100 people.

It is affectionately remembered for its innovative use of quirky colours, shapes and designs. It collaborated with the famous Kilkenny Design Shop to produce a wide range of products and it is often remarked that ‘there is a piece of Kilrush Ceramics in every house in Clare’. The event will present the story of the enterprise and feature an extensive exhibition of items produced by the company. Meanwhile, the KDHS winter series of

MID CLARE HERITAGE WALKS To celebrate Heritage Week 2018, Clare Walks Ltd. are organising two events along parts of the Mid Clare Way On August 18 from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, join our guided 25km leisurely Heritage Cycle taking in many historical sites and monuments, lakes and breathtaking scenery.

Suitable for a moderate level of fitness, it is on mostly quiet roads with a few inclines. Please bring a cycle helmet, a puncture repair kit/spare tube, fluid and a light snack as there will be a stop.

This cycle will start in Quin and will be led by an experienced cyclist. The walk will leave Newmarket-on-Fergus (Car park across from the Weavers Inn) and head towards Mooghaun Hillfort, which dates from the late Bronze Age and will also take the walker past the Dromoland Estate. The walk follows quite roads with some gentle inclines. Returning to Newmarket-on-Fergus, we will continue to Kilnasoolagh Church of Ireland church. This was built in 1815 by a prominent ecclesial builder James Pain, and was a reconstruction of a previous church built in 1686 by Sir Donough O’Brien of Dromoland Castle.

These events are free of charge with an optional donation. All monies raised will go towards the future maintenance and upkeep of the East Clare Way & the Mid Clare Way walking & cycling routes.

TEMPLEMALEY VISIT Clare Archaeological & Historical Society will visit Templemaley Church at 7 pm Tuesday 21st August.

Templemaley Church dates from the Romanesque period but was extensively repaired in the late mediaeval era. To mark the European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018, the Heritage Council are funding conservation works to the window on the south wall of Templemaley Church.

Dick Cronin, Conservation Officer, and Tom Howard Construction will outline the conservation works.

The first lecture, ‘The Doughboys: US Soldiers from Clare in World War 1’, will be presented by Ger Browne, a local historian of Clare people who participated in World War One. 2018 marks the centenary year of US Army and Marine Corps engagements with the German forces in France, battles which saw Clare-born immigrants to the United States lose their lives. Mr Browne’s presentation on his research will be on Wednesday 22 August.

A lecture on Frederic William Burton and his close links to Clare will be given by Dr Marie Bourke on Thursday, 23rd August. Dr Bourke is a former Head of Education at the National Gallery of Ireland and she recently curated a temporary exhibition on Burton at the National Gallery. A number of items relating to Burton, on loan from the Heritage Centre in Corofin, will be on display in Clare Museum.

Both talks are free to the public and will start at 1.05 pm and end at 1.45 pm.

HE St Francis Credit Union Community Games children are extremely busy right across the county preparing for their participation in the National Finals weekend 2 which will take place on 17th - 19th August in U.L. Over forty children will take part in individual Track and Field Athletic events.

Ten realay teams will also participate along with teams in Camogie, Gaelic Football, Futsal, Skittles, Soccer, Tag Rugby and Pitch & Putt & four individual cyclists. A total of 187 Clare children will participate. Clare have a great history of medal winning in National Community Games finals and its hoped this year will be no exception.

It is hoped that the newly renovated athletic track and pitches will prove a great success. A lot of the partici-

pants are no strangers to the national finals some have been there on numerous occassions.

Aldi’s Wild about Clare ALDI has announced that Wild Irish Seaweed, one of County Clare’s most innovative food and drinks suppliers, will be listed in its 132 stores nationwide as part of an Aldi Specialbuys Irish Food promotion kicking off on Thursday, August 23.

Wild Irish Seaweed successfully won a place on the Grow with Aldi supplier development programme, meaning that its Dillisk, Kompu and Sea Salad will be available on Aldi’s shelves.

Founded in 2009 by the Talty family, Wild Irish Seaweed took their family history in seaweed farming into the 21st Century after noticing a growing consumer trend towards health and wellness, with numerous media outlets touting seaweed as a nutritious addition to diets. It has since opened its own production facility in Clare, producing a range of food, skincare and pet care products.

Welcoming the Aldi listing, Evan Talty, Director of Wild Irish Seaweed based in Spanish Point, Co. Clare said, “The support and mentoring offered by Grow with Aldi has already benefitted our business immensely, and we are excited to see our

products made available to Aldi shoppers across the country. We believe we offer something truly unique and are thankful to Aldi for giving us the opportunity to share it.”

Developed in partnership with Bord Bia, Grow with Aldi has been designed to help small to medium Irish food and drink businesses secure a retail listing with a national retailer. Participants receive tailored mentoring and access to bespoke workshops with Aldi buyers and Bord Bia technical experts, teaching them the skills to help grow and develop their products and business. Aldi is investing €500,000 in the programme this year.

A total of 71 new Irish products, produced by 38 Irish suppliers from across the country have been selected by Aldi.

Five of the successful products will now be given the opportunity to become core line Aldi listed products, winning a contract to be sold in Aldi’s Irish stores year-round.

Shannon’s IASC joins elite ranks

THE importance of the International Aviation Services Centre (IASC) at Shannon has been acknowledged on a European scale with its appointment as the first Irish member of the elite European Aerospace Cluster Partnership (EACP).

The membership acknowledges Shannon IASC as not only the largest aerospace cluster in Ireland but a cluster of pan-European significance. The recognition elevates the international status of the Shannon cluster and is also an opportunity for firms within the cluster to co-operate on a European level to identify new projects, funding sources and development opportunities, the Managing Director of IASC Patrick Edmond stated.

IASC was established by Shannon Group in 2013 and is

Ireland’s largest aviation and aerospace cluster, with over 60 companies employing over 2,600 staff. The cluster is growing rapidly as international aerospace firms recognise the benefits of locating in Shannon and as indigenous firms expand their operations.

Recent additions to IASC include STS UJet (aircraft interiors), Aerospace Asset Trading (aircraft spare parts), A-techSYN (drones), GTS Robotics (air traffic control software) and Stratos (aircraft finance). The cluster has particular focus areas in MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul), leasing and finance, training, aircraft spare parts, and aviation services. It benefits from close links with local third-level institutions such as University of Limerick and Limerick Institute of Technology, both of which have strong aviation-relevant programmes and research activities.

Membership of EACP is conferred based on a vote of the existing members. The European Aerospace Cluster Partnership (EACP) was initiated in 2009 and is recognised by the European Commission as one of only 13 ‘European Strategic Cluster Partnerships’ (ESCP) – a recognition that acknowledges its efforts to improve global competitiveness by supporting pan-European collaboration and implementing joint strategies needed to enter new markets outside of Europe.

Said Mr Edmond: “Achieving membership of EACP is a very significant moment for IASC. Up to now, EACP comprised 42 clusters from 17 countries, with the linkage to the other clusters set to give us a constant exchange of knowl-

edge and information, helping it to achieve best practice within the industry. EACP connects us into a network that links clusters worldwide and matches and stimulates innovation in the industry.”

HE all new 40kw 100 per cent Electric Nissan Leaf has charged ahead in the sales charts this July. 306 new Nissan Leaf ’s were registered during the month which heretofore would have been close to the total number of Electric vehicles sold in a full year.

The July sales result brings the total number of Nissan Leaf driving on Irish roads to date to over 2,700 units cementing Nissan’s dominance and leadership in the fast emerging electric vehicle market.

Nissan said that the unprecedented demand for the new Leaf is being driv-

en by the fact that its range on a single charge has increased by 50 per cent to 378 kilometres (NEDC) and by a growing awareness amongst Irish householders that switching to a new Nissan Leaf can help them to save significantly on the cost of running their car.

Government incentives including the SEAI purchase grant of €5,000, the additional €7,000 SEAI grant for taxi drivers, the introduction of 0 per cent BIK on company vehicles, half price tolls and the environmental benefits of switching to a 100 per cent electric car are also playing a

big role in influencing consumers, according to Nissan.

“This result for July is a real benchmark and provides huge encouragement for the future of Electric Vehicles in Ireland” said James McCarthy, CEO, Nissan Ireland.

“We have been advocates for electric driving over the last 8 years and it’s fantastic to see people starting to make the switch in numbers now.”

“Consumers are conscientiously weighing up whether the car can save them money. Our Leaf customers have shown us that they are at least €1,350 a year better

off for driving the 100 per cent electric Nissan Leaf,” said Mr. McCarthy “and no other drivetrain – petrol, diesel or hybrid, can come close to delivering that level of running cost savings.

Swing with freedom for further distance G

OLF Tip: Swinging the club with more freedom = faster clubhead speed = further distance

It amazes me how uptight golfers are when they attempt to swing a golf club. To achieve a swing with more freedom and rhythm the first thing to consider is the grip pressure you are using to hold your club.

Often when I’m coaching my clients I observe them lunging their body towards the ball rather than releasing the golf club freely. Once I see this I discuss the importance of a lighter grip pressure and immediately they achieve more freedom and rhythm in their swing. You simply cannot swing a golf club freely unless your grip and your arms are relaxed.

Think about when you grip something tight, your forearms tense up and your body becomes rigid not ideal for trying to swing a golf club with speed.

To achieve maximum clubhead speed you must first find a relaxed grip pressure, this will help you to maximise the distance you can hit the golf ball.

Be careful though if you already have a light grip pressure, gripping lighter could lead to casting the club, therefore only lighten your grip to a pressure where it helps you to achieve greater clubhead speeds while also maintaining control of your ball flight.

(Grip size : using the incorrect grip size on your golf clubs can cause incorrect grip pressure also. So its important to make sure the size of your grips are cor-

rect for you.)

Another area to look at when your looking to achieve more freedom and clubhead speed is the angle you create between your forearm and the shaft of your golf club. The greater the wrist hinge and angle you generate the more clubhead speed and freedom you will have swinging your club. In the photo sequences 2, 3 & 4 you can see a good example of Tiger Woods creating over a 90° angle between the shaft of his club and his forearm. Work on improving your wrist hinge and see if you can achieve more clubhead speed and find that extra distance your looking for.

Finally if your body type is one that is restricted from turning your shoulders or you have restrictions in your flexibility, then as well as increasing your wrist hinge bend your arm slightly (like JB Holmes in the image). Keeping your arm straight is desirable for golfers with a good rotation of their shoulders, however if you have limitations then also try bending your arm as well as increasing your wrist hinge and see if it helps you to create more clubhead speed and freedom in your golf swing.

Only incorporate any of the above tips if you find they have improved your ball flight. The main thing I would like is for you understand how to experiment with your current golf swing and see if any of these tips can help you achieve a better ball flight and distance.

Following the success of last year’s outing between Clare & Limerick in the Costa del Sol, this year the event organisers, Golf Voyager, have announced one-time Spanish Open course, Torrequebrada Golf Course, Benalmadena, will be the host for the competition.

Set for Saturday 17th to Tuesday 20th of November, the competition is this year being extended to take in other traditional counties of Offaly, Galway and Tipperary, all of whom – like Limerick and Clare - will have former hurling greats captain their sides on the trip.

On hand to launch the competition – which is sponsored by Shannon Airport and Padraig McGrath from P&M Golf – were Limerick captain for the golf challenge and 2008 All-Ireland finalist Ollie Moran.

The launch event had plenty of pre-All-Ireland final spice, with two-time Galway medallist and goalkeeper

Peter Murphy on hand to stimulate the build-up nicely. And just to ensure parity, also present was a man who himself participated in many classics against both counties, legendary Tipperary corner forward from the 1980s and ‘90s Pat Fox. All three will be present in the Costa del Sol for the competition, captaining their sides and with Ahane native Ollie Moran defending the title he led Limerick to last year.

Stiff opposition will not just come from the counties represented at today’s launch but also the Banner county, who will be led in November by none other than two time All-Ireland winning captain Anthony Daly.

With limited places and a max capacity of just 120 golfers, those wishing to take part should contact Golf Voyager on 061-514600 before Friday 31st August 2018 for an event expected to sell out quickly.
