NNIS Food Festival returns next weekend with its most exciting programme of events yet.

Top chefs such as Gary O’Hanlon (RTE’s ‘The Restaurant’) will visit the county capital for a culinary whirlwind weekend that’s slowly putting Ennis on the map as one of Ireland’s top foodie destinations.

Local producers and establishments have come together to create a stunning programme that includes a wonderful ‘Bike Buffet’ which will see foodies wheeling around town in search of stunning treats, such as starter at The Rowan Tree and lobster at Lees Road.

The Ennis Food Festival will also include other great events such as Arti-

san Food at The Market Building, Still Life Workshop for Children (aged 10 -13), by artist Richard Sharp at glór and an Afterhours Chocolate Adventure.

NEW medical services centre is to be constructed on the Kilrush Rd with the granting of planning permission this week.

Ennis General Hospital’s outpatients department is expected to be moved as part of the development “which will consist of change of use of part of the existing Westpoint Building on site from Retail Warehouse use to Medical Services incorporating outpatients facility”. The current outpatients department operates from the ground floor of a two-storey former doctors’ residence located on the grounds of the hospital which was built in the 1960s.

Clare Car and Tractor Parts Ltd & Lohan Property Ltd lodged the application with businessman Martin O’Malley and All-Ireland winning Clare hurler Brian Lohan behind the development on the 1.2216Ha site. Gareth Ruane and Brian McCarthy are also listed as involved with the proposal.

Four months ago, an appeal to An Bord Pléanala saw O’Malley and Lohan denied permission to construct a supermarket and medical centre at the same location. This time round, planning documents note that it is not an industrial or commercial enterprise. It proposes that operation hours will be 8am-6pm on weekdays only.

New entrance ways to the existing building form part of the development along with the provision of a new staircase ad-

jacent to the existing building footprint, alterations to building fenestration and facade of the current site, provision of signage, a change to the site layout to allow for improved access and additional accessible parking units and set-down areas; bicycle parking will also be provided.

Clare County Council received a letter from the UL Hospitals Group who “fully support” the development. The letter stated that the present outpatients department at Ennis General “is not adequate” and “is negatively impacting on the working environment for staff and the delivery of patient care”.

A HIQA report from April 2009 recommended clinical services at the Mid West Regional Hospital in Ennis needed to change to offer safe, appropriate, timely and local access to non-acute patient care.

Cardiac rehabilitation services are currently catered for from a prefabricated unit on the grounds of Ennis hospital “which comprise of a gym, office and toilet accommodation”. They maintain that a new facility would alleviate waiting periods and lists.

In granting permission, Clare County Council stated that the proposal is “in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area”. The local authority did stipulate different conditions that must be adhered including a contribution in excess of €16,000 to the Council. No opposition to the project has yet been declared however, the Council’s decision could still be appealed to An Bord Pléanala.

Columbarium walls needed PÁRAIC McMAHON

OLUMBARIUM walls are “necessary and needed” to deal with the increasing demand for cremations in Clare.

A columbarium is a place for the respectful and usually public storage of cinerary urns which hold remains of the deceased. One columbarium wall already exists in Clare which consists of 462 niches into which the ashes of a loved one can be interred at the Shannon Crematorium.

Members of the Rural Development SPC were briefed on a draft policy regarding the walls at their September meeting.

“To our knowledge cremation is becoming more and more a requirement,” Senior Executive Officer Monica Meehan outlined.

The policy mentions provision of columbarium walls in each municipal are with Ennis, Shannon, Scariff, Ennistymon, Kilrush and Killaloe listed as possible locations.

“We did something right by letting that planning happen”, Cllr Mary Howard said of the €2.4m facility at Shannon which was opened in 2017 after a nine-year planning process. “Columbarium walls are the way to go to cater for all religions and nationalities”.

Independent councillor, Michael Begley was cautious at the amount of construction needed in one year if the walls were to be installed at graveyards all over Clare. Ms Meehan acknowledged, “What we see is cremations are happening. Traditional burials are used by my generation and the generation after me.” She highlighted that the shortage of grave plots could become an issue.

SPC member, Patrick Kwara questioned the approved access aspect of Columbarium walls. Chairperson of the SPC, Cllr Pat Hayes replied, “Families don’t have a key to it, otherwise you could be storing your bank balance there”.

Kwara queried if access worked the same everywhere, Meehan stated she would provide further clarity for him.

CLARE County Council is inviting ‘Expressions of Interest’ from landowners, developers, building contractors, property owners for properties and land in areas of housing demand across County Clare.

Submissions are being sought in relation to lands (serviced and unserviced), sites with or without planning permission, partially completed developments and/or turn key developments in County Clare.

Submission instructions are available on the Housing section of the Clare County Council website, www.clarecoco.ie.

Meanwhile, the Council is looking to buy or lease houses and apartments in areas of housing need under the Buy and Renew Scheme. Any property will be considered provided it can meet the minimum standards for rental properties and where there is a housing need.

HANNON Airport has this week welcomed the announcement by Ryanair that it is to deliver a twice weekly Ibiza service for next year’s summer season as another major boost in a very positive year for the airport.

Ryanair will operate the new route, a first Ibiza service for Shannon, from early April to end of October, strengthening sun holiday capacity to Shannon by another 22,000 seats.

This week's announcement comes with the airport, a Shannon Group company, enjoying its best summer season in a decade and recording growth of over five

per cent in the first half of the year.

Welcoming the announcement Andrew Murphy, Managing Director, Shannon Airport said: “2018 has been our best year in over a decade at Shannon but from planning perspective we have very much moved onto 2019 and this is a really good boost for the airport. It comes off the back of Ryanair going year-round from next month on its Alicante service and the introduction of its Barcelona-Reus service this summer.

He continued, “Ibiza is a hugely popular destination for holiday makers and will mean that next year we will have eight services to Spanish sun holiday destinations” Shannon Group CEO Matthew Thomas said: “Shannon Group is

one of the most important drivers of economic growth in the country and Shannon Airport is integral to that.

"We want to make it easy for holiday makers in our region to travel to sun destinations from their airport, and not have to make long journeys to get their flights abroad for summer and winter breaks.

“We’ve spent the last few years working very hard on building capacity back up and Ibiza is another service that was very much on our wish list and we are delighted now it on our summer schedule for 2019."

He added, "Ryanair is a major airline partner at Shannon Airport and we look forward to working closely the airline to make this new and welcome service a success.”

“I know many people have been concerned after reports in the national media regarding discontinuing the Christmas Bonus. Some newspapers

sought to make waves by suggesting that the bonus was under threat. I have been assured by Social Protection Minister Regina Doherty that this is absolutely incorrect."

Dept Carey added that the decision to pay a Christmas Bonus will be made at budget time.

Clare exceeds housing targets by end of 2018 PÁRAIC McMAHON

Y THE end of 2018, Clare County Council will exceed all its housing targets according to CEO, Pat Dowling.

Cllr Pat Hayes called for a timeline of details regarding planning permission and the different stages involved in providing housing as a means to inform the people of the county that “Clare County Council is not delaying proceedings”.

Councillors were given details on upcoming housing projects in the monthly management report. This led to Cllr Hayes leading the call for further information on the length of time involved in the various stages for the projects to be included on the agenda. “The Minister is criticising local authorities for not taking control. Can the full details be put on the agenda so that the delays are not a criticism of Clare County Council”.

Responding to Cllr Hayes, Council

CEO Pat Dowling said, “Can I state quiet emphatically Clare County Council is working hard and diligently not only to comply with targets but to exceed them and that’s what we’ll do at the end of the year. Rebuilding Ireland is a very ambitious programme, we’re engaging fully with Department officials, across all areas of social housing Clare County Council will exceed its targets this year.

“We’ve been innovative in our approach to the homeless challenge in Co Clare.”

Dowling added, “Any suggestion from Clare’s point of view I would argue vehemently back, we’re doing the best we can with the resources available to us. I will always defend the efforts that we’re making. The local authority is best placed and best poised to continue, not standing the challenges and changes in society, to deal productively with the housing situation in this country and I will always feel that”.

“I have no criticism of Clare County Council”, Hayes replied.

He reiterated his appeal for the details of the periods of time included on the agenda for the local authority’s October meeting.

“The delay is very much with the Department”, he concluded.

Ships dumping on Clare coastline

DUMPING by ships at sea is causing “a major problem” on the coastline of Clare.

Fianna Fáil’s Michael Hillery highlighted the issue at the September meeting of the Physical Development SPC. “In relation to marine waste and plastic, is there anything that can be done? A lot of waste on the coastline of Clare is coming from ships dumping.

“I know in Spanish Point, the majority of stuff collected on the beach and rocky shores has come from dumping at sea which you can see from the different signs on the items.

It is a major problem on our coastline,” Cllr Hillery added.

Senior Executive Engineer, William Freney agreed with the views of Cllr Hillery, he acknowledged that there is too much plastic being left along the coastline. “I’m not sure what we can do with ships depositing waste at sea”, he said.

EuroStat figures released at the beginning of May revealed that Ireland was the largest producer of waste plastic in Europe with 61kg per person per year.

Clare has mental health in mind with free events Ennis programme coincides with poll on impacts to our mental wellbeing

NNIS Mental Health Association this week launched its free programme of events for Mental Health Week which this year takes place from 8-12 October.

Speaking at the launch at SONAS in Chapel Lane Cllr Michael Begley, Mayor of Clare congratulated EMHA on the exciting and diverse programme on offer. Referring to mental health as a major concern for our communities he encouraged everyone to become involved in the activities and talks planned for Mental Health Week. The programme brochure will, he noted, be widely available in the coming weeks.

Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy, Mayor of Ennis called on the public to support the work of EMHA and commended the tutors who were giving their expertise free of charge.

Meanwhile an exhibition marking World Mental Health Day will be launched at Scariff Library Gallery on Wednesday, October 10 running to October 27.

“A Mindful of Mandalas” is a collaborative crochet art project which highlights the positive effects crochet and community groups can have on personal mental health and wellbeing.

It comes amid new research released by Laya Healthcare on Wednesday as part of Mental Health Week that will run from 7-13 October.

Almost half of Irish people say their mental wellbeing is of ‘real concern’ to them, a new study has revealed.

82 percent of Irish adults surveyed said that the conversation of mental health in Ireland needs to change as the stigma surrounding the illness remains.

The study found 44 per cent on Irish people said their mental wellbeing is of ‘real concern’ to them, with money worries the number one cause of anxiety.

Dr. Sarah O’Neill is the clinical lead for Laya Healthcare’s 24/7 Mental Wellbeing Support Programme, and the psychologist says that the study demonstrates the need for greater education on mental health.

She said: “The findings really shine a light on the need to open up the conversation around mental wellbeing in Ireland and the supports available to people.

“Knowing and understanding what triggers feelings of anxiety can help prevent or manage it but also knowing there is help at hand is hugely important.”

The survey also asked people to list the problem that causes anxiety, with financial concerns coming out on top, closely followed by poor sleep.

Social media also ranked highly, with 20 percent of people saying spending so

much time on social media sites triggered anxiety and had a negative effect on their mental health.

Top 10 things negatively affecting Irish people’s mental wellbeing: 1. Finances; 2. Poor sleep; 3. Weight; 4. Getting enough exercise; 5. Work environment; 6. Social Media; 7. Work-Life balance; 8. Relationship with spouse/partner; 9. Drinking too much alcohol; 10. Ability to do my job.

Meanwhile llmost two thirds of adults in Ireland (65 per cent) know someone who struggles with their mental wellbeing regularly, while almost six in 10 (56 per cent) say that anxiety has caused them difficulty in sleeping. At the same time, 82 per cent believe that the conversation around mental health needs to change in Ireland, with three quarters (75 per cent) agreeing that a stigma still exists around those suffering from anxiety.

The survey also examined the activities Irish adults engage in to help boost their mental wellbeing.

‘Let’s foster disability’ WE CAN do more to foster disability and inclusion in sport, Clare Senator Martin Conway has said.

The North Clare politician put forward a motion in the Seanad calling for greater effort in ensuring that those with disabilities are able to actively engage in sport.

Senator Conway said: “This motion aims to highlight how important access to sport is. Sport improves your mental and physical health, helps create a sense of belonging and community and even pride with sporting success.

“But we also need to recognise that for those with disabilities there are increased barriers and costs to access sport.

“My motion is calling for those difficulties to be acknowledged and for steps to be taken to ensure there is a move towards inclusion of those with disabilities in sporting organisations and facilities.

“This can be achieved through the linking of future funding grants with disability and inclusion targets, the roll out of disability inclusion training, the building of multi-functional & disability friendly sports facilities and greater access to specialised equipment for schools,” the Clare Senator said.

Senator Conway’s motion calls on the Government to consider a number of suggestions, including to encourage main stream sporting organisations to be more inclusive of people with various disabilities in their clubs and activities; and to ensure that funding to the National Governing Bodies of sporting organisations is subject to verifiable targets of inclusion of people with disabilities.

Great tragedy of Irish Sea is remembered

C

LARE’S victims of the of the RMS Leinster, which happened 100 years ago on Wednesday next, will be remembered at a special ceremony in Ennis this Sunday.

The sinking of the RMS Leinster - known as the greatest maritime tragedy in the Irish Sea - caused the tragic death of 567 people including 11 people with Clare connections.

The tragic sinking of the Royal Mail Steamer Leinster by German torpedo just weeks before the end of the Great War was quickly forgotten.Contemporary newspapers had moved on to the next story within a week, and political and social changes in Ireland in the following years did not encourage discussion of Ireland’s role in the war.

Next Sunday, October 7, the Clare Roots Society in conjunction with the Clare Peace Park Committee and Ennis Parish have organised a schedule of remembrance and memorial events commencing with a Mass of Remembrance celebrated by Bishop Fintan Monaghan at 11.30am at Ennis Cathedral.

This is followed by a book launch at Ennis Parish Centre at 12.30pm. This booklet sets out the background and family details associated with John Coyne (Tuamgraney), Delia and Norah Davoren (Ennis), Nellie Hogan (Newmarket-on-Fergus & Brighton), James and Claire Hynes (Tulla & Manchester), Margaret and Mary O’ Grady (Quin), Owen Ward R.I.C. (Ennis & Monaghan), Margaret Cooke (Ennis & Tipperary), and Edwin George Ferber (Killaloe) all who lost their lives in the tragedy. Finally at 1.30pm a wreath laying ceremony will take place at the Clare Peace Park at glór.

100 years on Clare Roots Society and author Lucille Ellis, together with the support of numerous people across Clare and beyond, have produced a timely reminder of this tragedy and its context.

Clare rent rises condemned GENERAL Election Candidate Cllr Mike McKee, has condemned the rise in rents across Clare, after the Residential Tenancies Board reported a rise of 6.4 per cent in rents over the last 12 months.

Cllr McKee said, “Rent inflation across the county is pushing families further into poverty. The average rent for the county as

a whole is €689, while in Ennis and Shannon rents can run as high as €900 a month or more.

“This news makes the failure of all of our local TDs to stand up against the Government’s housing policy all the worse.

“We had a housing debate this week in the Dail and not one Clare TD voted

against Government policy.

“Right now we have 300 families waiting for houses in Co Clare and these rent hikes will only drive more and more people onto council waiting lists.

“We need the voice of tenants and ordinary families to be heard, we need an urgent change of policy,” he added.

Following on from a similar programme that has been successful in County Mayo, the pilot scheme involves residents of the housing estate placing life-size pictures of children on their wheelie bins. It is hoped that drivers

have an emotional reaction to the stickers, and think of the reality of a child running out onto the road.

The decision to introduce the pilot scheme follows a motion raised at a meeting of Clare County Council by Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy, Mayor of Ennis.

“The idea behind this scheme in Clare came from a national radio piece I heard

about Mayo County Council’s adoption of an initiative imported from Australia to apply life size child stickers to Wheelie Bins to encourage people to slow down in their own estates,” explained Mayor Colleran Molloy.

The scheme is expected to be rolled out to other housing estates across the county in the coming weeks.

HE ROAD SAFETY AUTHORITY (RSA) has today published preliminary research findings which show that older pedestrians are at greatest risk of fatalities on our roads, with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities recorded for those aged 75 and over.

The research, which examined pedestrian fatalities over an 8-year period (2008-2015) on Irish roads also shows that the majority of pedestrian fatalities take place in darkness

and, of pedestrians killed in the hours of darkness, 98% were not wearing any high-visibility clothing. The preliminary findings were unveiled today at the RSA’s Annual Academic Road Safety Lecture, the first in a series of events taking place during ‘Irish Road Safety Week’, which focused on pedestrian safety and featured insights on the subject from international and national experts.

The preliminary findings of the in-depth examination of the pedestrian fatalities that occurred over an 8-year period (2008-2015) on Irish roads will help inform the design of an evidence-based pedestrian safety campaign in 2019.

Community SOUTH/EAST CLARE A NIGHT AT THE RACES Ballycar National School and Newmarket on Fergus GAA Club are hosting a Race Night to raise much needed funds for our school and club. A short few years ago Sixmilebridge/Kilmurry were the best area in Ireland now we are amongst the lowest in Clare.

With a population of nearly 6,000 and two schools which cater for over 700 children volunteers are needed to get involved to enable all these children to participate in all the events which Community Games have to offer.

Expectation is the root of all heartache - but what of Budget 2019?

T’S that time of year again! On Tuesday, October 9 Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe will finally reveal what Budget 2019 has in store. A decade ago, in the height of the recession, budget day was a day of dread, a day where we queued in petrol stations to fill our cars to the brim and did likewise to our bellies in the local pub before the clock struck 12 and we were hit with more fuel and alcohol tax hikes. Our belts were tightened and tightened with every budget earning us the unenviable reputation in Europe as the poster child for austerity.

The political pressures this year are very different from the recession budgets as Budget 2019 is a day teeming with expectation and in the words of William Shakespeare “expectation is the root of all heartache”.

So, what are we expecting?

AN INCREASE IN THE INCOME TAX STANDARD RATE BAND? There have been frequent criticisms of the financial strain “the squeezed middle” bears. One of the main culprits for this strain is the low level earnings at which people pay tax at the higher rate (ie 40%).

As we all know the income tax standard rate band was increased from €33,800 to €34,550 in last year’s budget, an increase of €750. This is likely to be raised by at least €750-€1,000 again this year. How much will this cost the Government? According to a publication prepared by the Statistics and Economic Research branch of the Revenue Commissioners in August the estimated cost of widening the band by €1,000 would be €213 million.

Many will argue that widening the band by €1,000 isn’t enough especially when you consider that the 40% rate kicks in in England, wales and Northern Ireland at £46,351 (circa €52,000). England, Wales and Northern Ireland have a third rate of income tax which taxes those on incomes over $150,000 (circa €168,000) at 45%. It has been suggested by the Irish Revenue Commissioners that the introduction of a third rate of tax in Ireland at 43% on earnings above €120,000 could yield tax revenue of €280 million. However, this is unlikely to be introduced this year. Many would be agreeable to the introduction of a third income tax band to pay for income tax cuts to the middle class. In my opinion this should only be implemented when we have the universal social charge (USC) that these individuals pay reduced to a more acceptable level as Ireland’s tax rates are already perceived internationally as being aggressively progressive.

AN END TO USC? USC was brought in in January 2011 by the late Brian Lenihan as a ‘temporary’ measure. Seven years later there is no sign of the Government giving this ‘catch all’ tax the boot. Many higher earners still pay USC at the rate of 8% on their

income. Frustratingly, we are unable to claim relief on our USC contributions when we contribute to things like our pensions, income protection or pension term assurance. Despite this being promised as a temporary measure on its introduction, the public have accepted it without too much protestations, hence why it has been left in existence whilst water charges are a thing of the past.

We saw a minimal decrease in USC in last year’s budget. The second threshold of USC was reduced from 2.5% to 2% and the third threshold was reduced from 5% to 4.75%. Not exactly life-changing amounts, however, at least it is going in the right direction. We can expect a similar level of reduction in this year’s Budget.

WELFARE PAYMENT INCREASES? Social welfare and contributory pension benefits were both increased by €5 per week in last year’s budget. Regina Doherty, Minister for Social Protection, has ruled out the same level of increase for this year however it is expected there will be some increases.

WHAT ELSE? It is unlikely there will be a change to stamp duty rates this year after last year’s increase in non-residential stamp duty going from 2 to 6% (arguable the only surprise in last year’s budget). In addition, it is unlikely there will be changes to the capital gains tax (CGT) and capital acquisition tax (CAT) rates. It is expected that the Government will increase the CAT tax free thresholds for children inheriting from a parent soon however I doubt we will see it this year. What’s more likely is an increase in minimum wage and what’s almost certain is an increase in carbon tax.

All will be revealed on Tuesday.

FF’s Crowe addition will ruffle feathers

T

HERE really is never a dull moment in politics in Clare.

Monday evening saw the announcement by Fianna Fáil that Cllr Cathal Crowe and Constituency Executive Secretary, Rita McInerney have been added to the General Election ticket, bringing their number of Clare candidates to three following the withdrawal of John Hillery.

Having originally stated that the East-West, two candidate strategy would still stand, it appears that, on analysis, FF bosses went with a ticket that seeks to balance, geography, gender and political experience but one that retains a very youthful look. At the age of 49, Timmy Dooley will, for the first time, be the eldest member of the Clare FF ticket. It was Cllr Crowe’s 36th birthday on Monday when news of his addition came. Although young, he brings almost 15 years of Council experience since first elected in 2004. Crowe (pictured) has steadily increased his vote at each election to become the highest vote getter for FF in the 2014 local elections in Clare with just shy of 2,000 first preference votes. He is also well established in the new areas coming into the Clare constituency from Limerick, having marched the beat there with TD Willie O’Dea for years.

Having attaining a degree in economic and politics from NUI Galway in ‘96, McInerney turned her attention to the business world, running the family shop in Doonbeg while being CEO of the Ennis Chamber for 14 years until 2016. In choosing to appoint Crowe and McInerney to the ticket, there will not be another FF selection convention in Clare for the next General Election.

The argument here is that the two candidates were the only others to accept a nomination to contest the convention last year along

with Dooley and Hillery.

2016 candidate Malty McDonagh ultimately did not accept the nomination to contest the convention.

This latest shakeup is of major interest to those yet to finalise their tickets. The addition of Crowe brings to just three, along with Dooley and SF’s Cllr. Mick McKee, the number of candidates selected in the eastern half of the county.

McInerney will be facing a direct battle with SF’s Noleen Moran and FG Senator Martin Conway who all have Independent TD Michael Harty in their sights in the west. However, Minster Pat Breen may also see his vote dip because of this latest development. Ennis looks like where the seats will now be won and lost. Assuming the key challengers all win their home areas, the number of votes they pick up in the greater Ennis area will determine who will come out on top. Splitting the county into five areas, as the 2019 local electoral boundaries has wisely done, gives you five clear areas for vote winning. To be a serious contender, a candidate must come out on top in their own area before challenging for a seat. Breen and Harty carved up enough of West Clare between them to get out in front last time out. Dooley was never in doubt in 2016 either as he wiped out the Killaloe area. With Carey and McDonagh the last standing candidates, Carey hailing from the Ennis Local Electoral Area (LEA) always gave him the advantage over Malty for the last seat.

FG TDs Joe Carey and Pat Breen would have hoped to avoid these

localized battles to avail of any Ennis bonus. With Spanish Point based John Hillery on the FF ticket, he’d likely be more focused on the North West; that would have left Breen free to win a majority of votes in the Kilrush LEA. McInerney though having a Doonbeg base is likely to hurt that vote whilst also giving her a platform to win a good number of votes in the Ennistymon LEA. Likewise, SF’s hopes of sweeping up a majority of votes in Shannon as a springboard to a first ever seat in Clare have been dealt a severe blow with the arrival of Crowe. For those left hoping to challenge, Ennis and Killaloe look like the only ones that don’t already have more than one heavy hitter. In the case of Killaloe, there is nobody to wrestle the eastern block from Dooley.

This leaves Ennis where voters are unpredictable.

In fact, in 2016 the three Ennis based councillors between them polled 6,932 first preference votes. This is the kind of vote any single candidate would need to win election. Only time will tell if Labour, the Social Democrats or even an Independent can break into the hunt. Nevertheless, the major players are known by now. The Budget will be vital for one thing; knowing when we can expect to see candidates appear on our doorsteps. The shadow boxing is almost over!

The journey of life

R

ECENTLY I was blessed to walk 120km of The Camino de Portuguese for the charity Self Help Africa with some of life’s amazing people including Brenda Fitzgibbon from Ennis in County Clare that have become true life friends. Though long distance walking might be considered just an athletic event by some, from my experience over that week on the Camino I would refer to it as an allegory for life.

So, what life lessons can one learn from walking the Camino or being a pilgrim on the Camino or any specific challenge that we do in life?

IT’S ABOUT THE JOURNEY OF LIFE, NOT THE END RESULT

Walking the Camino reinforced to me the idea that in life, it’s about the journey, not the end result. As I walked the Camino route into Santiago I realized that this might be the last time that I would ever take part in a pilgrimage like this, so I needed to savour the experience. I thought, “This is it, the moment I have worked so hard for.”

I needed to enjoy the Camino experience, not wish it away and what an experience it was with many epiphanies and very spiritual moments along with some hardships as I walked from Tui to Santiago on The Portuguese Camino route and enjoyed every minute of it. Sometimes keeping positive was difficult and prayer became very basic, ‘Bed please God’, ‘Please God get me to the top of this hill’, ‘Please God stop the pains in my legs and head’ or ‘Are we there yet God?’ But walking towards the goal of Santiago, following yellow arrows and sea shells, remembering that for centuries others have walked on these paths and carrying prayers and intentions for everyone I know or who asked me and thinking of all my ancestors and thanking them for the love they gave in their life so that I could be where I am today was a tremendous experience, allowing the physical experience to become the prayer, the weight of the backpack, the aches, blisters and pains, the warmth of the sun, the beautiful and bountiful wild flowers and trees, birds, choruses of frogs, bells ringing in my ears at times from bicycles, cows and churches,

amazing scenery, sharing a meal, sharing a burden, realizing that the other many nationalities I encountered all have one thing in common, we were all pilgrims on the journey of life.

Often we wish our lives away, wanting to reach a certain place in life in order to be happy.

However, often times the satisfaction derived from setting an objective is not so much in attaining the objective, but in the anticipation and striving toward the objective. So, as much as possible try to enjoy the journey as much as the end results as I did with my Camino attempt. The journey itself makes you a pilgrim. The Camino for me calls us to contemplate, to be amazed, to welcome, to share, to care, to internalize, to stop, to be quiet, to listen, to challenge, to risk, to admire, to love, to pray, to bless nature, to bless family, friends, colleagues and companions on the journey of life, to bless our own life journey and to be always thankful to our loving God.

IT’S ALL IN THE HEAD!

Walking the Camino or taking part in a challenging event is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Yes, there is

intense hard work that must be done in order to be physically prepared for the Camino when it comes along, but when the later miles arrive, and your legs begin to complain after making the same repetitive movements thousands upon thousands of times, it’s up to the mind to override the urge to quit. Its up to your mind to block out the negatives either in your own mind or in the minds of people around you. You must figure out some mental techniques to apply in order to keep from quitting, whether that’s mentally dividing the walk into sections like I did over the Camino journey, doing each mile for someone’s intentions or a loved one in your life as I did or chatting with other pilgrims along the way and encouraging one another to keep going but to also try to enjoy the journey.

Similar strategies can be applied to everyday life. We may face difficult life situations that require mental toughness, but we can make it through many stressful periods if we just find the mental strength necessary to continue onward. Everyone needs a challenge in life.

PACE YOUR LIFE

The walk along the Camino was beautiful, peaceful, energizing, spiritual, thought provoking, prayerful and at times relaxing to walk through the hills and roads and feel the peace and quiet and experience the joy of the beautiful scenery of Camino.

You see spending time in nature is healing, energizing and brings peace and calmness into our lives while also reconnecting us to the world in which we live. We can walk or run in nature, sit in nature and swim in the waters of nature. We can do this out in the wilderness of Camino or in our home places in our local parks of which there are many in Ireland.

There is something awe inspiring about nature and we can feel most connected to this feeling in those wilderness places; the forests, rivers, waterfalls, oceans and mountains and we have them in abundance here in our beautiful country of Ireland as well as me witnessing many of them on my Camino journey. Yet this awe and inspiration is there in every space where nature is, from your garden to your local park, the bog walks or the trail through the small wooded areas, forests

and mountains all around our own country. Nature is part of us and yet we can spend so little time in it. When we do we feel a reconnection which is more than just the fresh air, exercise or beautiful sights, it also speaks to something in our heart and soul and helps give our life some real spirit and real hope for the future! Life and nature are similar concepts because nature is the study of how life acts and interacts within the circle of existence. When we take the time to examine the beauty of the world around us, we are able to see parallels within our own lives. One who is attuned with nature is attuned with the practice of living.

All of nature moves in a spiral as do our personal lives. It is important to spend time in nature because in this way we can become attuned to its wisdom.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

As your thought for the week, keep going forward no matter what challenges life throws at you and don’t be afraid to give help and receive help as you make that journey through life and don’t forget to savour the experience as it is all about the journey and not the end result especially when it comes to your life challenges! We are all pilgrims on this journey called life.

lTREAT YOURSELF: It's best to get gel polish removed at a salon

HOW TO NAIL A GREAT LOOK A S A beauty therapist I am often asked the difference between gel polish and gel nails. Clients get confused by the different systems and who is to blame.

The names are so similar. Here are some differences. I only do gel polish in my own salon hence I have a lot more information on it. Gel Polish is applied over the natural nail and is not an artificial nail enhancement. Gel Polish is soaked off with the manufacturer’s remover or acetone. It is generally not filed off.

There are ‘hard gels’ and ‘soft gels’. The terms ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ are not a reference to strength or durability. The terms are simple. ‘Hard’ (non-porous) gels do not soak off in acetone and ‘soft’ (porous) gels do soak off in acetone. Therefore gel polish is a soft gel as it can be soaked off using acetone and hard gel must be filed off.

DO I NEED TO TAKE A BREAK FROM GEL POLISH?

Plenty of people worry about taking a break from gel polish to ‘let their nails breathe’. This is a myth. Nails are made up of dead keratin so they don’t need to breathe. However, I agree that some people should take breaks from gel polish. I have many clients who have been getting gel polish for up to four years and their nails are always in great shape after the soak off and before re-application. Many of them would believe their nails are in better condition than ever before while they have the gel polish on as it gives them that extra bit of strength, allowing them to grow easier without breaking. I then have other clients who might do three to four sets of gel polish consecutively and their nails really need a break afterwards as they might appear to be weaker.

WHY IS MY GEL POLISH NOT LASTING WELL?

I always tell my clients that the natural nail is the support of the gel polish, therefore, if the natural nail is not in good condition then the gel polish will not last well and visa versa. Some people have peeling nails.

This in my opinion is the worst type of nail to do gel polish on as when that layer of nail peels it naturally has to bring the gel polish with it. I always point out clients peeling nails in advance to warn them that these nails may lift faster than the rest.

Oily nail plates will lift gel polish quicker which is why it is so important to have the cuticles pushed back and prepared properly before having the polish applied.

Something I always ask my clients is whether they want their cuticles clipped or

not. I will always push them back, however, I give the option of clipping. It can be thought that you are at higher risk of infection by having your cuticles cut.

WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE THE LIFE OF MY GEL POLISH?

Use your knuckle as opposed to your finger tips when dipping into a tub of facial or body cream. Gel polish hates anything oily. Oil will lift gel polish quicker so avoid it at all costs. It is great to keep the nail plate conditioned. For that reason I would personally only use oils on my hands when I am taking a break from gel polish. Many nail technicians will disagree with this. In my experience this is my best advice.

HOW WILL I REMOVE MY GEL POLISH?

Your nail beds and cuticles are what's important. They're made of living tissue, which is why you need to be careful. It's safest to get gels removed at a salon. Keep an eye on the therapist. Make sure there is no dragging. The polish should crumble. It would be better to file off a stubborn piece than drag it as you have full control of how much you file, whereas if you drag you do not know how much of the nail plate you will drag with you. Removal can be done at home also. Make sure you ask your beauty therapist how to do so correctly before doing it at home. Use cuticle oil and handcreams afterwards and a nail strengthener if necessary.

IS UV LIGHT DANGEROUS?

Gel polish can be cured (set) using UV light. Many people are concerned about the dangers of ultraviolet light. Most therapists have converted to LED light which does not have the same side effects and sets the polish in approximately thirty seconds which is must faster than under UV light.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I EXPECT TO PAY?

Generally gel polish starts at approximately €20. This will depend on where you live though. Removal may not be included in the initial price so be sure to enquire about this when booking.

T

HE incredible Francie Brady is on his way to glór in Pat McCabe’s highly-acclaimed stage show Frank Pig Says Hello. Originally written in tandem with the famed Butcher Boy novel (adapted to the screen by Neil Jordan) 25 years ago, this darkly comedic and bitterly tragic tale follows the bould Francie Brady

growing up in 1960s Ireland Clones to be precise - and his descent into a brutal act that shocks the community.

Directed by Joe O’Byrne, it stars Darragh Byrne playing young Francie and John D Ruddy, who plays … well, everybody else. A nationwide tour has just begun and with four nights at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre under his belt, Donegal actor Ruddy and co are on their way to Ennis as part of the 19-dater.

“This is what theatre is for,” 29-year-old Ruddy says of the show, speaking to me over the phone. “It’s quite a different piece in some ways to the novel but the story will be very familiar to people who know the Butcher Boy as well. In the play, it’s much more about Francie’s memory of things, Francie’s experiences. It is very funny, very energetic but it is also deeply tragic like the novel. So we really have that wonderful juxtaposition of the humour and the tragedy and sadness.”

Even if the theatre isn’t your thing, this is for you. A 15-minute conversation with John has me absolutely sold on the idea of attending. John plays the older Francie (who narrates the show), Francie’s mum, the butcher, the guard, Mr Maguire, the abattoir owner. A gaggle of village busybodies, to be precise.

“I play Francie as the older man looking back,” John continues, “so there is a sense that I’m remembering what young Piglet (Francie) is going through. Darragh Byrne’s performance is amazing and I get the best seat in the house for it, right beside him watching him.”

Frank Pig Says Hello is a vivid portrayal of Irish society in the ‘60s and as such, is an incredibly poignant story that will stir something in most Irish people.

“It’s so indicative of small town Irish mentality. The story could have been based anywhere in small-town Ireland. It’s so powerful. In particular the 1960s when all of these subjects were so taboo and these subjects that Pat McCabe tackles in the early 90s. Ireland was only begin-

ning to talk about these things, the likes of mental health issues; his mother suffers from depression, she’s suicidal, the father is an alcoholic, there’s all sorts of clerical abuse, institutionalisation, different things that people weren’t talking about and were swept beneath the carpet. In that time you had as well, and I think the play shows this so well, is the community just turns against this family and particularly this young fella, they’re constantly laughing behind his back.

It’s snobbery, very much personified by Mrs Nugent who’s head of the pack – or at least in Francie’s mind – of looking down on the Bradys. It is such an important story for Ireland and Irish society in the 1960s and even today about society’s failures.

You’re watching it wondering could he have been saved if somebody treated him differently. If he’d have gotten the right support, counselling, could he have been saved.

And it’s a very challenging piece too because Francie does some bad things in it so it does have you question what your thoughts on Francie are.”

John, for his own part, has never performed in glór but is sure to leave his mark on those who attend. Described as “an extraordinary piece of theatre”

A RECORD number of over 1,000 students from across County Clare will participate in this year’s Student Enterprise Programme, a national initiative organised locally

by Local Enterprise Office Clare.

Second level students this week joined local business leaders and previous Enterprise Programme winners for Induction Days at Armada Hotel, Spanish Point, and at Treacy’s West County Hotel, Ennis, where they were encouraged to take their learning experiences outside the classroom by creating ideas, transforming them into opportunities and converting them into real businesses.

Student Enterprise Programme judge Siobhan Mulcahy, Clare County Council Arts Officer, Charlie Glynn from Kilrush-based Glynn Technical Diamonds Ltd. and Declan Murphy from Sixmile-

bridge-based Clubify spoke about the steps required to establish and nurture a successful business.

“The purpose of this enterprise programme is to give secondary school students a flavour of what it is like to run their own business.

I would hope that in the future, it will encourage some of them to develop a business in Clare and create local employment,” explained Cllr. Michael Begley, Mayor of Clare.

Padraic McElwee, Head of Enterprise at the Local Enterprise Office Clare, said the primary objective of the Programme is to foster an enterprise culture among Irish second level students and get them to consider entrepreneurship as a career path for the future.

“The Student Enterprise Programme offers participants the opportunity to take a business from the idea stage, through market research to production, selling, management and fi ­ nally, to writing a comprehensive business plan.” he added.

Mr. McElwee continued, “The induction days held In Ennis and Spanish Point marked the first and probably the most important phase of the Programme.

“Students were introduced to the competition and made the first decisions on the path to setting up their student enterprise - whether that be on their own or as part of a team.”

Students will compete in three categories, namely Senior Category (Transition Year, 4th Year, 5th Year, 6th Year & Youthreach Students), Intermediate Category (2nd Year & 3rd Year Students) and Junior Category (1st Year Students).

The winning enterprises will represent County Clare at the National Student Enterprise Final for 2019 on Friday 3 May 2019 in Croke Park in Dublin.

HANNON Airport has reiterated its call to other airports around Europe to establish sensory rooms after Gatwick Airport followed its lead by doing exactly that.

Shannon opened Europe’s first sensory room in March last year for children and adults with neurodevelopmental challenges including autism, and has facilitated visits by airports around the world that are exploring Shannon’s lead.

Among them was Gatwick, which this week opened the UK’s first such room.

Welcoming Gatwick’s initiative, Matthew Thomas, CEO, Shannon Group plc which operates Shannon Airport said: “We congratulate Gatwick Airport on this wonderful achievement. We know from opening our own airport Sensory room in March 2017 that the Gatwick Sensory room will be a tremendous assistance to passengers with autism and special needs.

“We already have well-established Ryanair services between Shannon and Gatwick airports, and the new Gatwick Sensory room means that a trip between

Last year when the Sensory room was opened, Shannon urged other airports provide similar facilities.

“We realised that it was one thing for Shannon to put these provisions in place but if other airports participated in this programme, then it would mean that when the passenger arrive on the other side they also get special treatment. That would be a huge gift to people with special needs and their families,” said Andrew Murphy, MD, Shannon Airport.

“The response this drew from the aviation community was astounding. Since establishing our Sensory room we have received over 30 enquiries from airports, Government agencies and sporting venues around the world, including Gatwick, looking for advice and guidelines on how best to establish a Sensory room. We were delighted to assist Gatwick and wish them every success.

Our offer to assist airports who might be thinking of following suit still stands.”

ILTOWN are living up to expectation as Championship contenders this year and proved themselves again on Sunday with a heavy win over a Clondegad side who have a number of players with one eye on the hurling this weekend.

Miltown would have felt last year they were caught by Clondegad in the semi final.

This year they came with a purpose. The West Claremen showed huge workrate, pace moving forward, and strength in the middle of the field. This is all consolidated by leadership. Gordon Kelly, Conor Cleary, his brother Eoin, Ciaran Malone. All these guys have intercounty experience. They know how to lift it.

DUAL DAMAGE Ballyea, meanwhile, are still involved in the hurling and the likes of Tony Kelly have only seen a football for a few wet weeks of championship action - I think that played a vital role in seperating these sides on Saturday. If Tony had a hurley in his hand a few of his attempts would have gone over.

Barry Toner in fairness worked very hard, digging in to his own half to create some go-forward ball and while Clondegad were trying, Miltown were just that bit better.

In Miltown, only Conor Cleary was involved with the county hurlers and it showed. They are all so natural with the football, and play as a unit, trusting each other’s every move. Their gelling period from the Cusack Cup, O’Gorman Cup, to the first few rounds of the championship has paid dividends.

At half time it was 0-8 to 0-4. All of Clondegad’s scores were laboured while Miltown were going through Clondegad with ease - against the breeze. 12 minutes into the second half it was 1-12 to 0-7, and it was game over.

BIT of a shock, especially condidering some of the hammerings Éire Óg have dished out this season but - and this can’t be underlined enough - Ennistymon were very impressive.

The big worry for Éire Óg coming into this game was rising to the occassion - realising this wasn’t a Garry Cup match - and they started off on fire. It took 10 minutes for Ennistymon to register a score. And that’s why this was such an impressive display by the North Clare outfit.

Ennistymon never panicked and stuck to a possession-based gameplan, which ultimately won them the game. This was tippified early in the second half, which was a replica of the first. Eire Og started well while it took Ennistymon 12 minutes to get a score. You thought they were staring at a long day but just like in the first half, Ennistymon did not panic, kept possession, and when they created chances, took their scores.

Ennistymon pushed up, forcing him long where Cathal Malone and David Fitz were eating up the middle of the field. He couldn’t pick out a red shirt with the short ball either - you need to be very experienced to pinpoint kick passes and those were not happening for him. That kept the pressure on and put Ennistymonwhere they wanted to be - in front of goal.

Even when the chances weren’t on, Ennistymon worked the ball back from Eire Og’s 45 to their own just to keep possession. They bided their time and waited for that chance to break forward. David Fitz and Michael McDonagh in centre forward took full advantage.

That discipline and patience all comes down to coaching. It comes down to the belief and the gameplan and Ger Quinlan has done a super job.

They lost their centre back Joe Ruan to injury after three minutes. They lost Seán O’Driscoll, their captain to a black card half way through the second half. They lost Cathal Malone near the end of the game.

It didn’t seem to phase them. They trusted what was going on and kept the workrate up.

TOWNIE TROUBLE Éire Óg, for the quality of player they have - and they have lots - just didn’t play to their potential. The likes of Ciaran Russell and Aaron Fitz probably didn’t work hard enough to get into the game. Gavin Cooney brought an attackig threat but he didn’t get enough support. Young Ikem Ugwueru and Conall O’Hanafin made a massive difference when sprung from the bench but overall the game seemed to pass them by - maybe the dual players’ workload made a difference.

ISSEYCASEY must begin a process of looking within if they are to bounce back from this defeat, which more notably than anything else, showed up a lack of fight and leadership.

It struck me that we seemed to be emotionless. Nobody was shouting at the referee, shouting at a Doonbeg man, encouragement among ourselves or even bitching.

That’s worrying to see because when you’re lifeless like that, you’d wonder is there a big day left to drag them out of the fire.

Doonbeg on the other hand, had purpose and recognised the seriousness of the situation. When they got their opportunity they dragged it with both hands. David Tubridy was a leader from the word go and showed all the qualities you wanted to see from some Lisseycasey men. David worked extremely hard up and down the field. He does it for the county and he does it time and again for Doonbeg. Apart from a missed free, everything that left his foot, left or right, from the ground from his hands, from play or frees, went over the bar. He scored 0-8 in total. To help him out you had the likes of Colm Dillon around the edge of the box. He’s mid-30s and has probably lost a bit of pace but what he has is a huge presence in the square.

Lisseycasey did a good job in cleaning up for so long, but it was going to happen eventually - a high floater ball came in. Colm Dillon came in and took goalie, full-back and everyone with him and hammered it into the net with his fist. That was a big turning point.

In Lisseycasey’s defence, they have had three or four injuries to deal with but at the same time, the spirit and fight didn’t seem to be there, which has carried on from the Corofin game. Lisseycasey have loads of football but will need extra drive from leaders such as Francie Hayes, Niall Kelly and Conor Finucane to drag it out of the fire against Breckans.

FOR THE SEMIS...

The semi final draw was a huge letdown from a football point of view, that Miltown and Cratloe are meeting. I feel they are the form sides and would have made up a cracking final. Anyway, it’s going to make a cracking semi-final.

That’s not taking away from Kilmurry, who you can never rule out but they’re an ageing side and I feel if they met one of those sides in the QF they would have struggled.

Cratloe Miltown is extremely hard to call. Cratloe have 11 or 12 dual players but they seem to have that mastered and they have this freshness about them at the moment - they’re scoring at will. But, Miltown won the championship two years ago and have a lot of intercounty experience. They get men behind the ball which won’t suit Cratloe so the tactics in this game will be intriguing.

You would think Kilmurry will be waiting for them - but you would have thought Eire Og would beat Ennistymon too. What they’ve produced so far this year may not get the Bricks over the line.

O’Connell for Clare camogie CLARE Camogie Board have announced the appointment of Ger O’Connell from Clonlara as the newly appointed Clare Senior Camogie manager.

The Clonlara native has been a prominent member of his club’s senior hurling team over the last two decades, when Clonlara achieved success in 2008 winning the Canon Hamilton and also three Clare Cup titles.

In recent years O’Connell has taken charge of the local Senior Camogie team, and has led Truagh Clonlara to Senior Shield success and consecutive McMahon Cup senior semi finals, and also Div 1 League success in 2017.

O’Connell will be joined on his management team by Barry O’Connell, Paul Nihil, Shane O’Brien, Killian Fennessy, Eileen Gleeson (all Clonlara), Laura Linnane & Gemma Quinlan (Wolfe Tones), Liam Clancy (Newmarket on Fergus), Claire Commane (Inagh Kilnamona) & Finbarr McCarthy (Ahane).

The Junior management of 2018 Ann Marie McGann, Tim McGrath, Ann Marsh McMahon, Trevor White, Bernard McMahon were all returned to their positions for 2019.

Both managements were ratified at the October meeting of Clare Camogie at Fr McNamara Camogie Park on Monday night, October 1.
