Surfers ditch waves to save lives

LOCAL SURFERS sprung into action to make life-saving rescues across the county this week. It comes as Clare County Council moved to put lifeguards on duty in the absence of lifeguards ahead of their scheduled return on Saturday . One woman was airlifted to University Hospital Galway on Tuesday after she was rescued by three surfers in Lahinch. It was one of a number of incidents where surfers were on hand to save distressed swimmers. Clare County Council on Wednesday moved to install emergency crew of lifeguards with a swelling of beach-goers. “The Council had arranged for lifeguard cover at Lahinch and Whitestrand Miltown Malbay for Wednesday 27th, Thursday 28th and Friday

29th considering the current heatwave and expected visitor numbers at these locations,” a spokesperson for the local authority told The Clare Echo. Fifty four lifeguards will be employed across Clare for the season. “The availability of lifeguards is a major factor in providing the lifeguard service. Our lifeguards are typically drawn from a student cohort who are only available for the summer months”. According to the spokesperson, “This incident does highlight however the dangers of swimming in certain sea conditions and in particular when there are no lifeguards on duty. We request all beach users to be mindful of all Water Safety Ireland advice.” More on P.4
