Carrigaholt rises in face of rural decline

CARRIGAHOLT has fought back against rural decline with the support of the community in the Loop Head Peninsula and further afield leading to the reopening of the village’s post office and the addition of a new convenience store.

An online funding campaign brought in over €61,000 which resulted in the reopening of the post office on Monday morning. The area had been without the service for four months following an alleged criminal robbery

at the end of January.

To protect the service, an online campaign was launched to ramp up security measures and this raised more than €50,000 in three and a half days.

Maura McKiernan remains as postmistress in Carrigaholt, the Cappa woman was carrying out her duties when she was an innocent victim to the criminal activity earlier this year but remained determined to return to work. “There was never a doubt in my mind that I wasn’t going to come back,” she told The Clare Echo.

ANGELA COLLINS O’Mahony, Ireland’s first steeplejack returned to Kilmurry NS where she was honoured with the unveiling of a new plaque.

A native of Kilkishen, Angela has kept strong links with her former school and on Friday was honoured at a place which means so much to her.

Kilmurry NS in conjunction with the Sixmilebridge Historical Society had Angela as the guest of honour as she unveiled the new plaque which includes her quote, “you can go from nowhere and go anywhere”. She has come a long way since her time on the roll book at the school which dates back to 1948.

Back in 1960s Ireland, establishing a new indigenous industry was not for the faint hearted, nor was it common practice for women entrepreneurs to challenge the status quo of the male dominated construction services sector. Yet that is exactly what Angela set out to do in 1968 when, as a young mother from a small farming background in Clare,

As Ireland’s first female steeplejack she clearly had a head for heights and, as it transpired, business. A multiple accolade winner, she was Ireland’s inaugural winner of the prestigious Veuve Cliquot Irish Business Woman of the Year in 1980, a past winner of the Bowmaker Award for Irish Industry in 1986 and was conferred with an honorary degree in recognition of her achievements.

She founded Collins Steeplejacks, and was managing director until

1992 when she retired with her husband John.

It is now being run by her son and daughter – Ireland’s second steeplejill.

She was also managing director of Essco Collins Ltd for 11 years up to 1986. After selling her shares in the company many years ago to L3 communications, it ran for 41 years until June 2016.

In September 2020, she was awarded a mayoral reception in Limerick City by then Mayor, Michael Sheahan (FG) to mark her career as an innovator, businesswoman and for her unwavering commitment to the

needs of rural Ireland.

Friday saw her latest accolade when her alma mater Kilmurry NS marked her contribution to the area and ensured it will be remembered by future generations with a new plaque at the entrance to the school.

Principal of Kilmurry NS, Kevin Clohessy told The Clare Echo, “Angela is a past pupil of Kilmurry NS, we had unveiling of plaque in conjunction with Sixmilebridge Historical Society, Tim Crowe was the main driver in it, we had music for Angela and a few words, we unveiled the plaque and Angela spoke to fifth

and sixth class students about the Entrepreneur Programme”.

This programme initially started off via The Clare People newspaper but has been kept going on an informal basis by the school, Mr Clohessy explained with Angela serving as a mentor each year.

Students continue to be inspired by Angela, the Clarecastle native noted. “Our students had a lovely reaction, they are all very friendly with Angela, the girls in sixth class put together a few words about Angela inspires them and spoke of her courage, work and independence and what can be down when she have these qualities.

She spoke at our graduation ceremony, she is a real inspiration to pupils, she broke down barriers when women were expected to stay home and mind children, she came from the area here and has achieved so much”.

Disappointment but no surprise as Lahinch loses Blue Flag status

LAHINCH has lost its status as a Blue Flag beach due to a reported drop in water quality.

It is the only Clare location to be stripped of the Blue Flag which is one of the world’s most respected environmental accolades, awarded to thousands of beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating operators globally.

In Ireland, it is administered by An Taisce on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Blue Flag status has been retained by eight beaches in the county, White Strand (Miltown Malbay), Ballycuggeran, White Strand (Doonbeg), Mountshannon (Lough Derg), Fanore, Spanish Point, Kilkee and Cappagh.

The status had been lost

by Cappagh in 2023 but has been retained for successive years. The privately operated Kilrush Marina has retained its Blue Flag for the 2026 season. The award reflects exceptional standards in water quality, environmental education, beach management, safety, and visitor amenities.

Green Coast Awards which highlight sites with excellent water quality and rich natural environments have been retained by Ballyalla Lake, Bishop’s Quarter, Carrigaholt, Quilty and Seafield.

Owner of The Coffee Hatch on the promenade in Lahinch, Carmel Connaire told The Clare Echo the stripping of the Blue Flag did not shock locals.

“I wasn’t surprised because we’ve had restrictions on bathing in the last couple of years, the Blue Flag is based over a four year period.

Generally speaking the quality is good and if there are any issues Clare County Council will issue a bathing notice to be implemented by the lifeguards”.

Since An Taisce announced the 95 Blue Flag and 73 Green Coast Award winners on Friday, Lahinch’s absence has been a talking point at The Coffee Hatch, Carmel confirmed.

“I get a lot of people that use the water, it won’t deter them from swimming here. The surfers might take more notice but they are very tuned in anyway. People coming to The Hatch are dis-

appointed but not surprised”.

She said, “we still have good bathing water, I think the emphasis on Lahinch losing the Blue Flag is more detrimental than actually losing it but Clare County Council have a huge responsibility in addressing this”.

Carmel doesn’t expect it will lead to a drop in visitors to Lahinch. “It is a decision that somebody with small children might decide to go to a Blue Flag beach instead of Lahinch but I don’t think it will have the impact that people think.

There has been no increase in capacity for sewage in La-

hinch but we’ve had a huge increase in the amount of people living here all-year round”.

There is “real disappointment” in Lahinch at losing “an internationally recognised symbol which communities are rightly proud of ” remarked Cllr Shane Talty (FF).

“To be honest it is not overly surprising because we’ve seen an increasing number of beach closures based on the fact that the bathing water is not safe”.

Lahinch’s lowpoint in losing the Flag could finally inspire some State bodies into

action, Cllr Talty stated.

“I think the primary cause of pollution in Liscannor Bay is the deficiency in water treatment plants in Lahinch and Ennistymon.

It is no harm that it brings it to national attention that the control and management of these plants lies within the State through Uisce Éireann.

This is a low-point where we may see more action, more investment and plans to get to a proper shared treatment plant between Lahinch and Ennistymon.

We don’t have a planning application so we’re years away from getting a commissioned plant in place but I hope the lowpoint of losing the Blue Flag might be used by those in positions to get things moving”.

Uisce Éireann must step up, Cllr Talty insisted. "Uisce Éireann state that it takes seven years to upgrade a wastewater treatment plant, they have been telling us they are working on upgrades for seven years but we don’t see a planning application.

Until they have cleaned up their act and can stand over the infrastructure I’m not interested in getting discus-

sions on land run off ”.

Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Bill Slattery (FG) admitted he was “very disappointed” and that he didn’t realise the criteria applied by An Taisce and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for awarding the Blue Flag was for standards to be excellent.

“The water is very good in Lahinch but it is has to be excellent to obtain the Blue Flag. It is safe for swimming”.

Failing to invest in infrastructure has led to Lahinch losing the Blue Flag, Cllr Slattery maintained.

“For years we’ve been hearing Uisce Éireann, An Taisce and the EPA blaming farmers for the run-off from their lands but when you see Uisce Éireann fined €20,000 for discharging sewage from Ennistymon and Lahinch into the Inagh River then it is no wonder that our water is polluted. The run off from the land might be a small component but the blame is with Uisce Éireann for not providing a wastewater treatment plant in Ennistymon and Lahinch which is required”.

Clare to get more Gardaí with Justice Minister 'not committed' to merged policing model with Tipperary

MORE GARDAÍ will be allocated to Co Clare while the Minister for Justice has said he is “not committed” to the current policing model which has Clare and Tipperary amalgamated.

Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan (FF) was in Ennistymon and Ennis on Friday morning where he met with local members and management of An Garda Síochána along with elected representatives in the Ennistymon local electoral area and Ennis Municipal District.

As of December, there are 298 Gardaí stationed in Co Clare. The 3.5 percent increase on 2024 figures saw the contingent of Gardaí increase from 58 to 71 in Shannon, 10 to 13 in Crusheen at the protective service unit but numbers dropped in Ennis from 114 to 110 and in Kilrush from 39 to 38.

According to the Minister for Justice, Co Clare will see an increase in Garda numbers if the national figure of sworn in members jumps by 505 from 14,495 to 15,000 by the end of the year.

“There is approximately 300 Gardaí in Clare at present, I and local representatives want to see more here, it is a matter for the Garda Commissioner to determine how Gardaí are allocated and where they are allocated but certainly if

we can get the numbers to 15,000 by the end of the year then I am satisfied we will see more Gardaí coming to Clare”.

County councillors in Clare have been critical of the merged Clare/ Tipperary Garda Division since its introduction in August 2023 and have argued it has led to a spike in crimes.

There has been particular criticism in East Clare which is man-

aged from divisional headquarters in Roscrea and Nenagh. The Minister said the operating model was introduced under a previous Garda Commissioner and he confirmed he has given new Commissioner, Justin Kelly to bring in what he feels is an “appropriate” structure.

He stated, “The operating model was put in place a number of years ago and it was designed to ensure there would be Garda efficiency

and efficiency is for the purpose of serving the public, that is the whole objective of having operating models in place.

I’ve said to the Commissioner that I’m not committed to any specific operating model, I want the Commissioner to lead the Gardaí in the way he thinks is most appropriate in terms of divisions, there are different functions within large divisions.

I’m in Ennis today, Roscrea is a central divisional headquarters but I do think the most important thing I can do for the public in Clare is to get a supply of more Gardaí coming in, that is what people want to see on a consistent basis, they want to see more Gardaí on the street.

If you look at the recruitment campaign and the number of recruits coming in and leaving Templemore, we’re heading in the right direction, we’ve 14,661 members of An Garda Síochána at present, by the end of the year we’ll be at the highest numbers of An Garda Síochána ever”.

Responding to reports from The Clare Champion that Ennis students have been offered drugs and threatened with rape in the county town, the Minister said such instances must be reported to the Gardaí.

“They need to report any such issues or threats to members of An Garda Síochána, if people are threatened with attack or people involved with drugs are trying to deal them drugs then they need to report that to An Garda Síochána.

The only policing force we have in the country is An Garda Síochána and the only entity that can stand up to that criminal activity is the Gardaí, I would urge those people, students and their parents to report it to An Garda Síochána in Ennis”.

West Clare doctor tackles Minister over lack of primary healthcare

A WEST CLARE GP has clashed with the Minister for Health over the continued lack of investment in primary healthcare in the region.

Health Minister, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill (FG) was in Kilkee on Monday where she met with locals to try gauge a better understanding of the difficulties experienced when trying to access emergency healthcare.

Eight Clare men to line out for Ireland at the World Cup in Mexico...

A BAND of County Clare men are proving that the dream of pulling on an Ireland shirt can come any time.

This month, a heavy contingent of Clare players who play their footgolf at Munster Footgolf in Shannon, will pack their bags, grab their size-5 footballs, and board flights bound for Mexico. They are heading to Acapulco to compete in the FootGolf World Cup—a rapidly growing global phenomenon that will see 64 countries compete.

For John Callinan, the tournament is the culmination of a decade-long journey that started as “an idea” and transformed into a thriving sporting community in Clare.

Back in 2013, Callinan began researching the concept of footgolf.

Finding that the hybrid sport was already capturing imaginations globally, he set about securing planning permission to

build a course in Shannon.

Munster Footgolf opened its gates on April 2, 2017, and has been going from strength to strength ever since.

To understand the game, Callinan had to play it.

“Hurling was my game, it was all about the GAA for me,” Callinan admits. “I was never really any good at soccer or golf.”

He quickly progressed from trying out his own fairways to an international competitor, representing Ireland at his first World Cup in Marrakesh in 2018. Now, he is part of a 15-strong national squad to Central America, heavily reinforced by local Clare talent who sharpen their skills weekly in Shannon.

The Banner county representatives heading to Mexico include: Paddy Umlawzski (Spancilhill), Stephen Cahir (Knockanean), Roy Mounsey (Tobairteascain), Alan Cahir (Tulla), Kevin Barron (Sixmilebridge), Michael McInerney (Clooney), Aaron Troy (Castle Rock).

“They come from all walks of life, all shapes and sizes,” Callinan says of the squad. “They are a good group of lads who play Munster Footgolf regularly and just decided to have a go. Four of them got a taste of it at the European Championships in Turkey before Christmas, but for the rest, this will be their very first time competing for Ireland. They’re incredibly excited.”

The World Cup in Acapulco is a two-week operation. The first week focuses on individual stroke play over four rounds, where Callinan will be the lone Clare representative competing in the Senior (over 45) category.

The second week shifts to the team event — a Ryder Cup-style format that Callinan is delighted to be playing in. Ireland has been drawn into a competitive group alongside Chile, Argentina, and old rivals England.

“England would be the benchmark,” Callinan notes. “They fancy them-

selves to go far. We recently played the Four Nations in Wales three weeks ago.

The first time we played that tournament years ago in Kilkenny, we came last.

The next time in England, we came second. We’ve managed to beat Scotland recently, so we hope to be fairly competitive. But team events have traditionally been tough for us, and countries like France, the USA, and Argentina are massive players.”

With no backing, the trip is entirely self-funded.

The players are paying out of their own pockets for flights, gear, and accommodation. Because of the logistics, the Clare contingent is taking a mosaic of routes across the globe to reach the same destination. “We’re going up all roads,” laughs Callinan.

Hospital porter caged for sexual assault of minor

A JUDGE has imposed a three year and nine month prison term on a 65-year old Co Clare man for two sexual assaults carried out on a 12-year old girl 19 years ago.

At Ennis Circuit Court, Judge Francis Comerford imposed the 45 month prison term on former HSE hospital porter, Gerard Sheedy of Quin Gardens, Quin, Co. Clare for the “heinous and reprehensible crime’ of sexually assaulting a child.

After hearing the victim impact statement, Judge Comerford commented, “To commit an intrusive sexual assault against a child creates a time-bomb that has the potential to affect the victim for decades and decades”.

Judge Comerford said that the digital penetration perpetrated by Mr Sheedy on the child “is a high

level of degrading intrusion into the body of another".

Judge Comerford said that Mr Sheedy was in a position of care and control over the child at the time.

In a Garda interview, when the allegation of sexual assault was put to Mr Sheedy by Det Garda Keith Taylor, Mr Sheedy replied that the allegations were totally untrue, commenting “I wouldn’t do that to a dog”.

Mr Sheedy pleaded not guilty to the two counts of sexual assault on da-

tes between January and May 2007 on the child at a Co Clare address but was found guilty after a jury trial at Ennis Circuit Court in February.

After the jury returned their verdict, Mr Sheedy voluntarily went into custody pending sentence.

The victim in the case was aged 12 and 13 at the time of Mr Sheedy’s offending.

Now aged 32, the woman, who is no relation to Mr Sheedy, was in court to hear Judge Comerford pass sentence on

Mr Sheedy.

Counsel for Mr Sheedy, Patrick Whyms BL said that his client accepted the verdict of the jury.

He said that Mr Sheedy has led an unimpeachable life apart from this offending and has always worked. Mr Whyms said that Mr Sheedy is now a registered sex offender.

Mr Whyms handed references into court from Mr Sheedy’s former supervisor at the HSE where he worked as a hospital porter.

Judge Comerford said that there were two instances of sexual assault. He said there was no evidence of grooming beforehand and no threats by Mr Sheedy to the girl to keep quiet after the sexual assaults.

Judge Comerford said that the sentence was reduced from 52 to 45 months after mitigation was taken into account.

Moneypoint project 'must be' considered when it comes to nuclear power in Ireland

REVIEWS of the use of nuclear power in Ireland must also consider the future of the Green Atlantic project in Moneypoint, a West Clare councillor has stressed.

Prior to Cork East TD, James O’Connor (FF) announcing plans to introduce a bill before the Dáil over the coming months to reverse the ban on nuclear energy in Ireland, councillors in Clare were questioning the merits of utilsing nuclear power in Ireland.

The Electricity Regulation (Removal of Nuclear Fission Prohibitions) Bill 2026 has been drafted and submitted to the Oireachtas Bills Office, and will be debated

by TDs in the Dáil within the next six months.

A nuclear electricity generation installation would be authorised to be constructed or operation under the bill. "Ireland has been ranked consistently as one of the most expensive energy markets in the world. This has brought enormous energy costs to households and businesses; damaging our competitiveness and contributing to a growing cost-of-living crisis," Deputy O’Connor stated.

posed before the April sitting of Clare County Council that the Government “openly and honestly review and consider the option of including nuclear power as a viable option to Irelands future energy needs”. He asked that the power options be generated in Ireland.

He explained, “I am not calling for the building of a nuclear power station, I’m calling for an evidence-based debate. The system around us is rapidly changing”.

Ireland will be consuming nuclear generated energy from inter-connectors in Britain so it needs to be having the discussions in a transparent fashion, the Lisdoonvarna representative

said. “Ireland has done extremely well on wind energy and it must be continued, when wind doesn’t blow and sun doesn’t shine Ireland relies heavily on imported gas.”

Seconding the proposal, Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF) stated, “We need to investigate it, we shouldn’t be like ostriches and stick our heads in the sand. It is saying we should have an honest evidence based approach. We’re facing ongoing demands for heightened electricity”.

Investigating the potential for nuclear energy is “long overdue,” commented Cllr Shane Talty (FF). “This country is uniquely exposed to a shortage of energy

and supply. I know nothing on nuclear energy, how it works and doesn’t work but people that do should be given the opportunity to see what the options are for Ireland”.

Frank conversations are also needed on plans for offshore energy, stressed Cllr Ian Lynch (IND), “it all has to be taken into the context on Green Atlantic’s future”.

Green Atlantic is the ESB’s flagship transformation programme at Moneypoint which will repurpose the plant into a green energy hub.

Nuclear power is likely to be used in the future, Cllr Tommy Guilfoyle (SF) concede, "I am opposed to the use of nuclear power but I understand that as an interconnector to Europe we will be using power generated from nuclear options”.

Referencing Albert Einstein, Cllr Michael Begley (IND) remarked, “I wonder if he was around now would he approve of motion?"

Cllr Tom O’Callaghan (FF) also supported the proposal. “I’m sure Einstein would love to join in the investigation we’re talking of having, we have to be realistic, we’re at the end of a very long supply line for a lot of things,” Cllr Garrihy replied.

Landmark site to be restored

CLARE County Council has confirmed that a Part 8 planning application is being progressed for the redevelopment of the former Mars Cinema and Dance Hall site on Frances Street, Kilrush.

The proposed development will see the regeneration of the site as a multiuse facility supporting the ongoing revitalisation of Kilrush town centre.

Plans include the integration of an adjacent property, alongside the redevelopment of the wider site to accommodate a range of uses. The proposal also includes enhancements to the existing Art Deco entrance.

Carmel Kirby, Director of Services, West Clare Municipal District, Clare County Council, said, "This presents an opportunity to revitalise this vacant heritage landmark building and create a vibrant multi-use space.”

John O’Malley, Senior Executive Officer, Kilrush Electoral Area, Clare County Council, said, “We are keen the public has a full opportunity to engage with the proposals as part of the statutory consultation process."

Plans of the proposed development will be available for public inspection at Áras Contae an Chláir in Ennis, the West Clare Municipal District Offices in Kilrush, and online via the Council’s consultation portal.

Submissions and observations will be accepted up to Monday, 29 June 2026.

Making history: Shannon group has nationwide appeal

A SHANNON history group with Nationwide appeal will feature on RTE television at the end of May. Shannon Archaeological & Historical Society (SAHS) kicked off a celebration of half a century of lectures, outings, and social events at the beginning of May with a blitz of three outdoor venues in one afternoon.

On top of this, the group will also launch volume 50 of The Other Clare later this month in another iconic venue.

On hand to record phase one of the double celebration was an RTÉ Nationwide team, fronted by reporter, Marian Malone, filmmaker Matt Kelly and photographer Patrick Joy. Meeting up with the committee at Treacy’s Oakwood Hotel, Marian interviewed John O’Brien, one of the society’s founding members who attended the first series of history

lectures in St Patrick’s Comprehensive School in 1976. John went on to edit some of the earliest volumes of the Other Clare and has continued to play a leading role in the society.

Volume one of The Other Clare was published in 1977 and the Society has continued to publish the prestigious journal every year.

Dr Rosemary Power, author, historian, and editor of The Other Clare since 2022, currently lives in Scotland, but she explained to the Nationwide team that her connections to Shannon go back decades to when she led a pioneering ministry in the town.

Following the meeting, the members set off for nearby Tullyglass Hill where archaeologist, Olive Carey, spoke about the early days of the country’s new town and the people who were arriving from all over the globe to make a new life in Shannon.

to Dromoland Castle where historian, Dr Jane OW’Brien, revealed the history of the Lemenagh Gate in the castle’s walled garden, which was dismantled and brought from the ruined north Clare fortress at Lemenagh, the original O’Brien family castle, to the Newmarket demesne in 1902 by the

15th Baron Inchiquin Sir Lucius O’Brien and his wife, Lady Ethel.

In Bunratty, two of the society’s younger members, archaeologist Jake Justice, who works with WTVAS Archaeological Consultants, outlined his work excavating a nearby site which has now been developed for housing and showed the

members some of the artefacts, pottery and parts of mediaeval kilns, discovered in the area.

While historian Micheál Mac Gearailt, who is completing a Masters Degree in the Netherlands, outlined the history of Bunratty graveyard and the beautiful Church of Ireland building and also spoke of

his growing interest in history and the encouragement he received from the time he joined the society more than a decade earlier.

Following the outing, Marian Malone paid tribute to the expertise of the members they had filmed and interviewed while secretary, Jane O’Brien, said the trio of venues proved to be a great success and added that it was a very enjoyable day.

stone in Bunratty. It is believed that John Hastings, the last of the family to live in Hastings Farmhouse in Shannon is buried there with his parents Dan and Mary.

The ruined family farmhouse in Tullyvarraga, Shannon, is to be rebuilt by Dúchas na Sionna with work starting later this year.

SAHS will appear on Nationwide on Friday May 29th at 7pm on RTÉ ONE and two days later will enjoy the launch of volume fifty of The Other Clare in Shannon Airport.

Smithstown light engineering hosts 5th Year Caimin's students for VIP engineering experience THE CREATIVE world of engineering came to life this week as Smithstown Light Engineering (SLE) welcomed 5th Year students from St Caimin’s Community School for a special VIP site visit to their headquarters in Shannon.

The visit formed part of SLE’s involvement in Explore Engineering, where the company ran a competition offering students the opportunity to win an exclusive behindthe-scenes experience. A group of four students from St Caimin’s secured the prize and were hosted by the SLE team.

The day began with Patrick Baylan, Joe Casey, Sophie Grady and Rebecca Healy being collected from their school in SLE’s fleet of

electric vehicles before being brought onsite for a guided tour of the company’s facilities.

During the visit, they gained first-hand insight into how precision components

innovation in the sector. The visit concluded with lunch and a number of SLE merchandise giveaways.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow students, Joe Casey, 5th year student at St Caimins Community School said: “The VIP onsite day was incredibly enjoyable and engaging. It was very impressive overall, and I thoroughly enjoyed the onsite tour experience.”

Speaking about the initiative, Gerard Henn, CEO, Smithstown Light Engineering said the aim was to open students’ eyes to the possibilities within the industry.

“We were delighted to see a huge response to our competition and for a local school to win it. Engineering is a diverse and dynamic field,

Carrigaholt shows rural communities how to stand up to retain important local services

CARRIGAHOLT have shown the way for how rural communities can stand up and successfully fight to retain local services.

Having been closed temporarily since January following an alleged robbery, Carrigaholt post office reopened to a warm reception on Monday morning.

Keeping the post office was made possible following a GoFundMe campaign which raised over €61,000 to secure the long-term future of the post office in Carrigaholt and improve security measures.

Co parish priest and vicar forane for Carrigaholt, Cross, Kilkee and Doonbeg, Fr Michael Casey has witnessed the challenges first-hand for rural communities over his two decades in the Loop Head Peninsula.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Fr Casey commended the local people for leading the way to keep vital services. “It is vital that we stand up for services because sometimes it is easy to say we will move services like An Post back into Kilrush or Kilkee but we need these facilities in the rural parts of Ireland and villages like Carrigaholt because it is very well serviced all over the area from Loop Head all the way to Cross into Carrigaholt”.

Ballyea native Michael noted that Carrigaholt keeping services bucks the trend that is far too constant of a centralisation of services from rural Ireland. “I’m here for the last twenty years so I’ve a fair knowledge of the locality and I know the place well, it is great to see so many people interested in the place because it is a time when a lot of people are going towards the bigger cities so it is great to see things happening in the local rural places, it is important to keep these places alive, services like this help to keep a place alive which is important to us”.

On Monday, he blessed the new post office before its opening and admitted it was the first time in his career that he blessed a post office. “I have blessed a lot of different premises but it is the first time I have blessed a post office”.

During his blessing, Fr Casey took a moment to remember Pat Gavin, “his heart was in the place”. Pat served as post master for over fifteen years prior to his retirement in August and sadly died in October.

Post offices remain at the centre of communities, Fr Casey acknowledged. “The post office is always at the centre of the place as was highlighted, it is a hub for the village, it is a focal point, there will always be people wanting to come to the post office for their own business and the business of posting and everything like that and just to meet people, it has been a great focal point over the years.

Pat Gavin brought it to fruition many years back, he then had the wisdom to have Maura working with him which is why Maura was able to take over the post office, when you see how many volunteers are willing to help out for it to become a reality that there will be a little hub here, it is good and important”.

Winners of eight annual Garda Youth awards are named

INSPIRING teenagers from Clare were honoured at the eight Clare Garda Youth Awards.

Eight awards were presented to winners aged from 13 to 19 years at a special event held on Tuesday at Hotel Woodstock, in recognition of the young people’s bravery, determination and positive impact.

Sponsored by the Shannon Airport Group, the awards celebrated teenagers from Kilfenora, Ennistymon, Ennis, Corofin and Shannon.

Another individual achievement award was presented to sixteen year old Mayar Jadalla from Ennis after setting up

a six week sports programme to help children living in emergency accommodation integrate into the community.

Corofin’s Joe Slattery received a special

achievement award. The eighteen year old from Corofin suffered a life changing injury in 2024 and has now returned to school, embracing a new chapter in his life with an attitude that inspires his peers, family and community.

Sam O’Dwyer aged thirteen from Ennistymon was acknowledged with a special achievement award. He continues to raise money for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust following the tragic death of his brother in New Zealand, while also raising awareness in his community of medical conditions which can affect young people.

Ennis’ Isabella Sydney also picked up a special achievement award. The

seventeen year old had both her legs amputated at the age of seven because of a rare congenital disorder. Her positive attitude ensures she sees no limits and she is an active member of the Munster Wheelchair Hurling Team.

Clare Comhairle na nÓg members Isabel (19), Niamh (18) and Caitlin (17) all from Ennis were winners of a Group Award. They worked with Clare Youth Service and Clare Local Partnership to introduce free period packs for girls’ sports clubs having identified period poverty as a barrier to girls participating fully in sport.

East Clare UBU Youth Group who has members ranging in age from

twelve to seventeen also received a Group Award.

They have led several climate action initiatives including Eco Action Killaloe, tree planting and supporting local biodiversity projects.

Winners of the community safety award were the Escape the Vape school ambassadors from St Caimin’s Community School and St Patrick’s Comprehensive School, both located in Shannon. The students aged from 14 to 17 established an anti-vaping campaign, engaging and educating fifth and sixth class primary students via workshops, podcasts and posters.

Ennis businessman plans to double size of €1m home A WELL-KNOWN Clare businessman has lodged plans to demolish a four bedroomed home on a property he and his wife purchased for €1 million in Lahinch last summer and construct a new home more than double in size, writes Gordon Deegan.

Last June, former EY Entrepreneur of the Year finalist and founder of healthcare recruitment group, TTM Healthcare, Brian Crowley and his wife, Susan Crowley purchased Thalassa at Seapark, Lahinch for €1.005m.

During an online auction which lasted one hour and seven minutes where bidding started at €650,000, the Crowleys beat off bids from five other bidders to purchase the property for €1.005 million.

The online brochure for the property built in 1971 stated that “situated on an elevated site with uninterrupted panoramic views overlooking Lahinch Beach, ‘Thalassa’ is a home in one of the most sought after locations along the west coast of Ireland”.

An entry on the residential price property register confirms that the €1.005 million sale went through on August 13th last.

Now, Brian and Susan Crowley have lodged plans with Clare County Council to demolish Thalassa and construct a new detached dwelling.

The new home will be more than double the size in floor space than Thalassa with gross floor space of the new home at 314 sq m compared to the 126 sq m for Thalassa.

Mr Crowley represented Ireland in boxing at under-age level and in 2024 TTM Healthcare generated revenues of €144.26 million in 2024 as pre-tax profits increased by eight per cent to €12.46 million. TTM has offices at the Ballymaley Business Park outside Ennis.

lines the justification for demolishing Thalassa.

He told Council planners in an email that “the existing house is in a poor state of repair and is unviable as a refurbishment option and as a result we are proposing to demolish the existing house and construct a new build”.

Mr Keating of JE Keating and Associates Architects has told the planners that “in our approach we are acutely aware of the sensitivity of the site and its location in a settled housing estate”.

Mr Keating said that the design approach shows “however we have respected the pattern of development as well as the proximity of the adjoining neighbours”.

Mr Keating has told the Council that “we will submit a structural report from a qualified engineer stating the degraded nature of the existing structure which will need to be demolished as the clients want to build a Nzeb (nearly zero energy building) standard compliant energy efficient home”.

Mr Keating points out that Thalassa is not a protected structure or within an Architectural Heritage Conservation Area.

No objections have been lodged against the application with the closing date now closed and the Council is due to decide on the application next month.

Clare students take prestigious Irish language awards STUDENTS from nine schools in Clare were awarded a Gaelbhratach (Irish flag) at a ceremony in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, this week.

The schools were just some of the 165 in total who were recognised for their commitment to the language with the prestigious prize from Gael Linn.

Delivered by Gael Linn, Gaelbhratach is a national programme designed to encourage students at primary and post-primary level to use Irish beyond the classroom in a natural and enjoyable way.

The initiative continues to grow every year, with 2026 marking yet another milestone in its continued expansion at post-primary level.

For the first time, schools from all 32 counties took part this year. A record-breaking total of 165 post-primary schools, including in Clare, have been awarded the Gaelbhratach

Each flag recognises the commitment of students and schools to promoting Irish as a living language within their schools and communities. A further cohort of primary schools will be recognised in separaWte events later this year.

The continued growth of the programme is a testament to the enthusiasm, hard work and love of the language displayed by students and teachers alike.

Through their committees, students shape the scheme within their schools, finding creative ways to use Irish in their daily lives.

Search for Clare Awards winners

CLARE Association Dublin has announced that as well as making its annual awards to Clare people who have made significant contributions in their fields it will for the first time honour a Clare Young Person of the Year for 2026.

This week the association launched its search for people who will be honoured later this year for its Clare Person of the Year and Hall of Fame awards as well as the young person award for people between the ages of 18 and 25 years.

The association is inviting members of the public to name individuals they feel have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields. They can send their nominations to info@ clareassociationdublin.ie or contact any member of the association.Closing date for nominations is June 28.

Clare Association Dublin-Muintir an Chláir-chairman, Ciáran O’ Connell,speaking at the launch of their awards programme, said it had become one of the most respected celebrations of Clare achievement, recognising individuals whose dedication continue to bring pride to County Clare both at home and abroad.

He said that the awards honour excellence across a wide range of areas including business, community development, education, healthcare, sport, culture, public service and voluntary contribution.

The Clare Person of the Year Award recognises an individual currently making a significant impact in their field, while the Hall of Fame Award celebrates those whose lifetime achievements have left a lasting mark on Clare and beyond.

Plans for Carrigaholt Irish College offers 'tremendous opportunity' for West Clare village

CARRIGAHOLT “is the hub of the Loop Head Peninsula” with plans progressing for a new use of the village’s former Irish college.

Following a temporary four month closure, Carrigaholt’s post office reopened on Monday morning with the addition of a new convenience store in its premises in The Square.

Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG) a proud native of Cross noted the large crowd of fifty plus in attendance at the reopening with young and old alike including the students of Carrigaholt NS. “I remember when I was elected to Clare

County Council seventeen years ago, my first invitation was an extension to Carrigaholt school and I am glad to see staff and students here, it is going so well”.

Speaking at Monday’s reopening, Cllr Keating commented, “I always say that Carrigaholt is the hub of the Peninsula, we’re very fortunate to have so many facilities, it really is a great village, you can come down and swim, you can go to the castle, go on the dolphin boat, you have so many facilities, from the west you have the award-winning Long Dock, you have two coffee shops, three pubs, a craft shop, the school and a creche,

you have the church, the burial ground, we have so many things in Carrigaholt and a great community.

Last June, plans were lodged to turn Coláiste Eoghan Uí Chomhraidhe into “a residential cultural and educational centre with overnight visitor accommodation”.

Coláiste Eoghan Uí Chomhraidhe successfully operated as an Irish summer residential college for over 100 years from 1912 until its clo-

sure in 2017.

Referencing the plans, Cllr Keating stated, “The fact O’Curry College is closed doesn’t mean it won’t open again, we’re in the middle of a planning process, I hope we will get it over the line”.

He was one of four politicians in attendance where he was flanked by Cllr Tom O’Callaghan (FF) and Cllr Michael Shannon (FF) with Cllr Rita McInerney (FF) among the crowd.

He quipped that Cllr O’Callaghan “always reminds me of the Minister for Justice” and he labelled Cllr Shannon as “a Junior Minister to be”.

EIGHT BEACHES in Galway have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Award for the 2026 bathing season, with an additional six beaches receiving the coveted Green Coast Award.

At a national awards ceremony held at in Mall House, Youghal, County Cork, on Friday, the An Taisce International Jury announced the awarding of 95 Blue Flag and 73 Green Coast Award designations for beaches throughout the country.

The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised environmental awards. Blue Flag beaches and bathing areas must adhere to specific criteria in the areas of water quality, waste management, biodiversity protection, education, information, safety and amenities.

150 artists set for four days of outdoor painting in South Galway with Charity Paint Out in Kinvara

Plein air painting is thriving in Ireland with hundreds of artists participating in festivals and events all over the country over the summer. Plein air artists paint outdoors from observation in any medium – oils, watercolours, acrylic or pastels – as they set up their easels and gear, capturing the local landscape, seascape and urban/village streetscapes.

The Kinvara Plein Air Festival is a well-established annual event and the third largest festival on the calendar of plein air events in Ireland. Over the June bank holiday weekend, more than 150 artists will descend on Kinvara, the Burren and South Galway for four days of outdoor painting in some of the most beautiful spots on the Wild Atlantic Way: Kinvara village, Coole Park, Ballyvaughan, Lough Cutra Castle and Eagle’s Rock in the Burren.

There’s a full programme of workshops, daily paint outs and social events, with an opportunity to exhibit artwork and win some great prizes. We engage a fantastic

range of tutors who, as well as being exceptional professional artists, are super teachers. The festival attracts artists from all over Ireland, with an increasing number coming from the UK, Europe and the USA. The quality of the tuition, the stunning locations, the camaraderie of paint-

ing in creative company and the many social events make the Kinvara festival one that brings people back year after year.

“The entire weekend was fabulous. It was fantastically well organised. Great to have the local community involved and support from local businesses. It was re-

ally nice to have social events mixed in to get to know other artists. The professional artists were amazing with their hints and encouragement…Their enthusiasm is infectious and makes you believe that you can actually paint something that’s ok!” said one participant.

The highlight of the festival for the public is always the Charity Paint Out on Monday 1 June in Kinvara village. On Kinvara Green between 2pm and 3pm you can buy original art straight off the easel. Visitors also vote for the Public’s Choice prize. Proceeds support our local mental health charity Kinvara Alive and Médecins Sans Frontières.

The Wet Paint Exhibition opens at the KAVA Courthouse at 3.30pm on Monday 1 June and runs daily until Sunday 7 June. Free to visit, and all work is for sale.

Plaque to mark 50 years since Brendan Voyage

CLARE County Council has marked 50 years since the Brendan Voyage began with the unveiling of a new plaque at Craggaunowen.

The anniversary coincides with the completion of improvement works across the Craggaunowen site. These enhancements include the restoration of walking trails and the addition of a traditional forge, where visitors can now observe live blacksmithing. As part of the 50th anniversary commemorations, a plaque was unveiled at the Brendan Boat House in celebration of the pioneering spirit of explorer Tim Severin

and his crew by Clare TD Joe Cooney and one of the original crew members, Arthur Magan. ‘The Brendan’, a 36-foot leather boat, departed Brandon, Kerry, on May 17, 1976, on an epic journey that captured the global imagination. Thought for the week: Bless the road that carries you Spreading the word of positivity RONAN SCULLY

T

HERE are moments in life that arrive so quietly you do not recognise them at first.

They do not announce themselves with noise or urgency.

They come instead as ordinary conversations, familiar songs, and the soft passing of time, until suddenly you realise you are standing inside something sacred.

I felt that recently while listening to an interview on RTÉ Lyric FM with broadcaster Marty Whelan in conversation with singer Mary Black. They spoke about her song ‘Bless The Road.’ And something in the way Marty described it stayed with me.

He spoke of how, when his own son first left home as a young adult, he played that song repeatedly for days afterwards. Not because it solved anything. Not because it made the silence easier. But because it gave language to something deeper than words, a father’s love learning how to let go without letting go of love itself.

I understood him instantly. Because my own home now stands at the threshold of that same moment, as do many homes across Ireland, where children, now young adults, spread their wings, leave the nest, and set out on their life’s journey. My daughter Mia, 19 years of age, is preparing to leave for America for close on four months tomorrow. Her first real step into

the world on her own. Her first true stretching of wings beyond the familiar walls of home. And I find myself doing what parents have always done in such moments, trying to hold still what cannot be held.

THE MOMENT WHEN LOVE BEGINS TO LET GO There is a strange ache in watching a child become an adult.

It is not a wound. It is not a regret.

It is something softer, more complicated, like memory and hope existing in the same breath. You remember everything. The small hand that once reached for yours without hesitation. The bedtime stories repeated night after night.

The school mornings, the laughter in the kitchen, the ordinary chaos that somehow becomes the architecture of a life. And then you look again and realise that the child you once carried through the world is now stepping into it alone. Not away from you, but towards life.

And still, the heart does what it has always done, it holds both pride and pain at the same time.

THE BLESSING OF THE ROAD There is an old blessing that has travelled through generations like a quiet hand on the shoulder: “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.” It is more than poetry. It is the language of love that refuses to control but chooses instead to cover, to surround, to entrust. And in that spirit, I find myself whispering something of my own for my

beautiful daughter Mia, “May your journey be safe, but not empty of challenge. May your heart be open, but not unguarded. May you meet kindness in unexpected places. May you learn quickly, but never lose wonder. May you fail without fear, and rise without shame. And above all, may you know that you are never alone.”

WHEN A HOUSE GOES QUIET Every parent who has reached this stage knows it. The house changes. It is not just the absence of noise, it is the absence of possibility. The chair that is no longer occupied. The room that still holds a shape of someone who is not there. And in those moments, love becomes something different. It no longer walks through the house in footsteps and routines. And yet, there is something no parent is ever fully prepared for, no matter how much love has gone before it.

It is not the departure itself. It is the silence that follows it.

Perhaps this is what it means when we say love is eternal. Not that it prevents separation, but that it survives it. It learns to speak in prayer instead of conversation.

In memory instead of routine. In blessing instead of touch. And in that sacred silence, something holy begins to form, such as a deeper trust that the bond between parent and child was never held together by proximity alone but by something far more enduring.

A SCRIPTURE FOR THE HEART OF A PARENT “Love is patient, love is kind… it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

(1 Corinthians 13:4–7). If ever there was a scripture written for parents watching their children grow, it is this. Because parenting is not a moment. It is a lifelong act of patient, hopeful perseverance.

Even when the role changes. Even when the child becomes the adult.

Even when letting go becomes the daily practice of love.

FOR MY DAUGHTER And so, for my daughter, I write this not as a goodbye, but as a blessing spoken into distance. Go and live fully. Go and discover the parts of yourself that cannot be seen from home. Go and learn, and stumble, and rise, and laugh, and become. Dance at festivals.

Watch sunsets in places you have never been before. Meet people who widen your understanding of life. Take photographs, but also pause long enough to truly live inside the moment itself. And when life feels overwhelming, when loneliness visits unexpectedly, when you doubt yourself or lose your footing for a while, remember

this, “Be strong and courageous.

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

(Joshua 1:9). Know this also as I always say to you, “You come from love. You were raised in love. And there is no ocean wide enough, no distance great enough, to separate you from the people who carry you in their hearts every single day.You are loved beyond measurement.

You are prayed for without pause.

You are carried in a heart that does not forget you for a single moment. And when you are far away, may you still feel something steady within you that says, ‘I am safe. I am loved. I am enough.”

Because long before you belonged to us, you belonged to God. “I have called you by name; you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1). And when the world feels uncertain, may you remember, “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” (Deuteronomy 33:27).

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK As your thought for this week, I invite you to do something simple but profound. Reach out to someone you love and bless them, out loud if you can. A child leaving home. A friend starting again. A parent growing older. A loved one facing uncertainty. Speak words that release rather than hold.

Words that strengthen rather than control. Words that carry love beyond presence. Tell someone what they mean to you while there is still time to say it. Place a hand on a shoulder. Say the prayer. Make the phone call. Write the letter.

Clare village buzzes with biodiversity as they welcome Nature & Heritage Minister Christopher O'Sullivan

QUIN was buzzing with activity last week as the biodiversity plan for the village was launched by Minister of State, Christopher O'Sullivan.

Pat O’Brien, chairperson of Quin Village Tidy Towns detailed that the plan will ensure that Quin will be a welcoming environment for flora and fauna to flourish in the coming years.

He noted, “the Biodiversity Action Plan being launched today will educate on key topics such as biodiversity awareness, species and habitat management, citizen science, outdoor learning and well-being.”

Minister of State for nature, heritage and biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan (FF) stated

that, “a day like today reminds me that I won the jackpot with this job.”

The Minister laughed, “I don’t want to go on about how great Clare is too much as I am a Cork man. But you did start farming for nature.

I think the Burren was one of the first successful farming for nature efforts and it worked.”

He went on to emphasise that although it may be a relatively small biodiversity action plan, it’s just as important as anything being rolled out across the country.

“Two weeks ago, we launched the independent advisory committee’s report into recommendations on nature restoration in Ireland.

That’s large scale right across the country. But this biodiversity action

plan that we’re launching today for Quin is just as important.

"I know it’s on a smaller scale, but it proves that the government have to step up to the mark. We have to be serious about nature restoration. But it starts in the community. I’m so thrilled to see a packed room here today.”

Protecting biodiversity, is clearly at the core

of Quin’s Tidy Towns mission.

With three other biodiversity projects also in place, including the Return to Nature Church Biodiversity Project at St Mary’s Church, a bumblebee monitoring scheme and the development of the Árd Chúis Grove Nature and Sensory Garden Trail.

cil Biodiversity Officer, worked closely with the Quin community to set up these projects.

He revels in the work and effort that the tidy towns have put into making this all possible, “This plan reflects the strong and positive biodiversity actions undertaken by the people of Quin to enhance biodiversity in their community. This plan will play a vital role in translating actions set out under the County Biodiversity Action Plan, which was launched in March.”

County Council and the local Biodiversity Action Fund. But thanks to the Minister's support in that initiative, biodiversity work at St. Mary’s Church has transformed the grounds into a wildlife sanctuary while honouring the church’s landslide and spiritual significance.

“I knew Quin was serious about biodiversity with all the midges and horseflies descended down upon us at our workshops, " he added.

The launch of this plan was “perfect timing” as May 15 marks the beginning of Biodiversity Week.

A week that is thoroughly celebrated in Scoil na Mainistreach, who are working towards their eighth green flag. Catherine, a sixth-

class student and a member of the Green Schools Committee told us about how as a school they stay green.

“At the moment we are working towards our eighth green flag. It is the Global citizenship marine environment. Even though we live inland, we can still help protect our oceans and sea life.

This year we have done lots of fun activities.”

“We made ocean sea creatures using recycled materials and took part in initiatives around our village to keep our environment clean. We also enjoyed doing a timed insect count in the new biodiversity trail in Architects Grove. It is exciting to see how many insects and living things are sharing our environment with us.”

Shannon College of Hotel Management marks 75th with new degree program

SHANNON College of Hotel Management has marked 75 years of hospitality education with a milestone anniversary celebration and the launch of a new undergraduate degree - Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) in Global Luxury and Experience Management.

The event was centred around the launch of a new ambitious vision for the future of Shannon College, including an outline of plans for a new purpose-built, state-of-the-art learning building.

Founded in 1951 by Dr Brendan O’Regan, Shannon College of Hotel Management has grown from an ambitious idea in the Shannon region to become a world-renowned school as part of University of Galway which has a distinctive place in Irish and global hospitality education.

The 75th anniversary event brought together alumni, students, staff, friends of Shannon College, members of the community and industry partners to reflect on its long-standing contribution to the national and international hospitality sector, while also looking ahead to the future of hospitality education.

Professor David Burn, President of University of Galway, said: “It is a privilege to be part of a 75th anniversary celebration which so clearly shows the strength of the bond between students, staff, graduates and the region, while also demonstrating the impact of the Shannon College globally. We look forward to greater successes in hospitality education as ambitions for the future become a reality.”

Shannon College’s new BBS in Global Luxury and Experience Management combines business knowledge with specialist capability in luxury markets, digital engagement, service excellence and international brand environments. It has been designed to equip graduates for roles that require the ability to design, deliver and manage high-value customer experiences in a wide range of settings.

The 75th anniversary celebrations included conversations, billed as Down Memory Lane, with graduates including Daniel McLoughlin, founder of RockSalt; former Deputy Head of School Kate O’Connell; and current third-year student, Erin Brady.

Graduates of Shannon College Nicky Logue, General Manager Intercontinental Hotel Dublin, Ruth Scanlon, Marketing Director Reignwood UK, and Christine Murphy, Founder of Urban Aran, also took part in the event, reflecting on their careers and the opportunities presented by the new degree.

The celebrations also included the launch of a Shannon College 75th Anniversary Commemorative Whiskey, produced in collaboration with Co Clare Whiskey Bonder JJ Corry.

The Shannon College brand is carried across the world by a global alumni community of more than 3,000 graduates in senior roles including chief executive officers of international hotel groups, leaders of global hospitality brands, chairs of major tourism destinations, and presidents and chairpersons of national and international hospitality organisations.

From student to trailblazer: Kate shares

WHEN the Shannon College of Hotel Management marked its 75th anniversary last Wednesday, few in attendance could match the personal timeline of Kate O’Connell.

The former Deputy Head of School, who retired in 2023, has a connection to the institution that spans half a century. Her story is a full-circle journey that mirrors the evolution of Irish hospitality education in Shannon.

“I started here as a student in 1976,” O’Connell recalls. “I was actually serving with my classmates at the 25th anniversary luncheon when I was a first-year student. So I’ve done the 25th, the 50th, the 60th, the 75th — and I’ll be here for the 100th.”

Originally from Ardpatrick in south County Limerick, O’Connell was a student at Scoil Pól in Kilfinane when a recruitment talk changed the course of her life.

“I was interested in going to UCC to do Commerce and History,” she says. “And somebody from Shannon came to Scoil Pól to talk about the course. And they said the second year of the programme was going to be in Switzerland.

“Now, would I spend the summer in Switzerland or would I spend the summer in Arpatrick?

There was no winner. It was Shannon for me after that.”

Out of six applicants from her school, O’Connell was the only one to secure a place in 1976.

“Fifty years ago in Ireland, it was very, very different,” she notes. “We had just got the phone in at home — the dial-up phone. The first lift

“It was a great experience,” she says, attributing the school’s global outlook directly to its founder.

“I think it’s all down to the vision of Dr Brendan O’Regan. That instilled the internationalisation of the programme from the very beginning.”

After graduating in 1980, O’Connell embarked on a 21-year career in the UK hotel industry. She became a trailblazer in a heavily male-dominated sector, securing a milestone achievement as the first female General Manager for a hotel group in the UK. She later transitioned into academia, establishing a hotel management degree course at London South Bank University, where she worked for a decade.

When asked how a small college in Clare prepared her for her ground-breaking achievements, O’Connell points to the foundational habits formed during her training.

Shannon opened so many doors for me that I would never have even dreamt were possible I ever saw, or my parents ever saw, was below in Shannon in our Halls of Residence.”

For a young woman from rural Limerick, the college offered immediate exposure to a wider world.

O’Connell found herself sharing classes and student accommodation in Geneva with peers from Mauritius, Jordan, Holland, and

got the job, and spent the next 23 years shaping the next generation of hospitality leaders as a lecturer, registrar, and ultimately, Deputy Director.

“I would not be where I am today without going for that interview,” O’Connell says. “I would not have experienced the worldwide travels I’ve done through hospitality, hotel management, and education. It’s opened so many doors for me that I would never have even dreamt were possible.”

Now retired to Kildymo, County Limerick, O’Connell views the college’s integration with the University of Galway as a vital step that secured its long-term future without losing its local roots.

“At the time, it was quite difficult when we were joining in... because people in Clare thought we were deserting. But we’re not.

We were never. And for that to be achieved was a huge safety mechanism to ensure the college stays in Shannon, to ensure it gets developed, and to ensure it grows.”

That growth is evident in the college’s expanding international reach — including developing degree programmes in the Seychelles Islands — and the newly announced undergraduate degree in Global Luxury and Experience Management.

“I’m very happy in retiring from Shannon College on an official basis, knowing it’s in safe hands and we’ll be going forward strong,” she says.

Why Cavan student Erin swapped the farm for Europe’s top hospitality college

WHEN Cavan native Erin Brady told her secondary school guidance counselor that she wanted to study at the Shannon College of Hotel Management, the reaction wasn’t exactly enthusiastic.

“My guidance counselor said, ‘Why would you do that course?

It’s a catering college,’” Brady recalls.

Coming from a dairy farming background, Brady had never heard of Shannon until she spotted it on the CAO forms.

Intrigued by the combination of business, tourism, and practical restaurant service — elements she already loved from her teenage part-time job — she refused to let the counselor’s skepticism sway her. In fact, it did the opposite. “Ever since he said that, my mind was made up,” she laughs.

“I was going.”

Speaking on stage as a student panelist during the college’s 75th anniversary celebrations, the third-year undergraduate shared how that defiant choice turned into the most formative journey of her life.

Arriving for her initial inter-

view, Brady was met by fourthyear students in immaculate business suits and admits to wondering, “What is going on?”

They reassured her that the uniform was the scariest part of the college, but adapting to Shannon’s notoriously strict grooming standards took a little time.

“I came to Shannon with every piercing possible in my ears and really orange fake tan,” Brady confesses. “I tried to get away with it for the first few weeks with my hair down, but [the college authorities] caught me fairly quick.”

The real turning point, she says, came when she stepped out of the academic bubble and into the job market.

“The buy-in probably didn’t kick in fully until this year. I went for a hotel job interview alongside another girl from Shannon, and we were the only two candidates who weren’t pulled up for our uniform standards on the first day — our hair, our earrings, everything. That was the first time it hit me that maybe the college is right.”

Today, she views the daily grind of ironing a shirt and pol-

ishing shoes as a professional edge. “You feel confident in your suit when you walk in, and it absolutely sets us apart from other people our age.”

Central to Brady’s experience was her second-year professional placement in Strasbourg, France.

It was a steep learning curve that pushed her far out of her comfort zone. “It definitely toughens up your character,” she reflects. “I was crying going on placement, but I was also crying leaving. It was the most formative year of my life so far.”

Now in her third year, Brady notices a clear distinction between her career trajectory and that of her peers from home. “I could go into an interview now and I’m almost excited, because I like the feeling of having to impress and sell your good qualities. An interview might scare someone else, but for me, it’s like, ‘Yes, it’s exciting, let me in.’”

As the final student voice on stage during the 75th anniversary event, Brady addressed the rising impact of technology on the modern workplace with total confidence.

tion are coming more and more into different jobs, but I don’t think they can ever overtake someone in hospitality,” Brady concludes. “You cannot

replace a smile, a handshake, or a hug.

That is something special we learn here in Shannon, and I’m just really happy to be a part of it.”

Primed for University town?

THE Shannon College of Hotel Management’s 75th anniversary celebrations was run entirely by a dedicated collective of 36 staff members and a small army of student volunteers.

For Adrian Sylver, Head of Shannon College, that collective spirit is exactly what has kept the institution thriving for three-quarters of a century.

"We have a fantastic staff here who are absolutely 100% committed to the college and go above and beyond," Sylver says. "And the students volunteering today is just part of the culture here. It's part of the fabric of the college."

A proud Galway man from Ardrahan — known in sporting circles for his involvement with the Galway Senior Hurling backroom team — Sylver is looking down the road. The 75th milestone marked the dual launch of a brand-new degree in Global Luxury and Experience Management and a major campaign to build a brand-new, purpose-built university campus in Shannon.

When Shannon College integrated with the University of Galway in 2015, the merger came with a strict, non-negotiable condition: the college had to stay in County Clare.

Now, Sylver sees the potential campus development as a historic opportunity. "I see this vision for the future and a new

campus as a real opportunity for Shannon to be developed as a university town," Sylver explains.

The college’s current main building was built in 2000, but a steady surge in student numbers means the school has outgrown its walls.

"Our current facility is not fit for purpose anymore," says Sylver. "We have the main trust building and the food and beverage building behind us, but we’ve had to lease extra space from both Shannon Airport and the local Park Inn hotel just to cope."

In a twist of history, renting space from the Park Inn brings the college full circle.

When Dr Brendan O’Regan founded the school in 1951, its first classrooms were located in the basement of that exact property, then known as the Shannon International Hotel.

The commitment from the University of Galway to invest in a new, state-of-the-art campus represents a “huge vote of confidence, and a real opportunity to invest in the region," Sylver says. "We are right beside a thriving airport and a thriving industrial estate. It's a real opportunity for the university to build its student numbers and its branding."

Furthermore, Sylver believes that anchoring a modern campus in Shannon opens the door for the region to expand far beyond hospitality training. "We’ve been here

since 1951 as a hotel management college, but there are so many other disciplines in the university. A new campus gives opportunities for other academic departments to establish a foothold in the Midwest."

When asked what has allowed a small college in Clare to command such a massive reputation across the global hospitality sector, Sylver distills it down to the alumni network, the staff, and the unique ethos instilled in the students from day one.

A key example of that is a mandatory first-year module called Life Skills, which requires students to leave the classroom and engage directly with the local community.

"Part of that module involves community engagement," Sylver notes. "We send groups of students out into the local area — to organizations like Clare Haven, the Tidy Towns in Bunratty, and the Carrigoran Nursing Home.

The students interact and help out, and that's incredibly important to who we are."

With an international airport on its doorstep and some of the world's finest hotels scattered along the Atlantic coast, Sylver believes Shannon remains the perfect incubator for the industry's future leaders.

"We're celebrating 75 years of excellence," Sylver says.

"But we're here to look to the future and build a vision."

Shannon steps into global luxury market

OUTSIDE the Shannon College of Hotel Management during its 75th anniversary celebrations, the hands-on nature of the institution was on full display. With up to 200 guests arriving, it was fulltime lecturers — including Finian O’Driscoll — out on the tarmac directing traffic.

“It’s a 100% family effort here,” O’Driscoll laughs.

But the day wasn’t just a look back at three-quarters of a century of history. It also marked the launch of an ambitious new direction for the college: a Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) in Global Luxury and Experience Management.

Preparing to welcome its first cohort in September 2027, the course represents a pivot toward a booming sector of the global economy.

O’Driscoll, a Cork native who has lectured at Shannon College for nearly 25 years, has spent the last year helping to develop the curriculum.

“It’s taken a full 12-month cycle to get here,” O’Driscoll explains.

“We need this time now to get our ducks in a row—the proper structure, resources, and personnel—to deliver it properly.”

The decision to build a specialized luxury degree came from tracking where Shannon’s traditional hotel management graduates

were actually ending up.

“We have recent graduates who ended up with a degree in hotel management from our institution, but they’re actually working in Formula One,” O’Driscoll notes.

“They’re working on cruise liners, yachts, and even in Gucci and Prada. We realized the experiences and knowledge they gained here easily translated into those industries.”

The new degree takes that organic trend and builds a dedicated academic pathway around it. While rooted in a traditional business foundation — with heavy focus on finance, accounting, marketing, and management — the specializa-

tion tracks the modern premium market, from high-end real estate to global brand management and wellness tourism.

Crucially, the curriculum introduces skills designed for a changing digital landscape.

“A big driver we’ve realized in the last number of years is the influencer economy,” says O’Driscoll.

“We conducted a very interesting focus group with senior cycle secondary school students recently around the idea of a career as a social media influencer.

“Hence, a very strong element of the new programme is digital transformation, artificial intelli-

FOR John Gavin, co-owner of the Shannon Springs Hotel and Ennis's Temple Gate Hotel, returning to the Shannon College of Hotel Management for its 75th anniversary felt more like a homecoming.

Gavin’s journey into the industry didn't follow a straight line. He initially attended Trinity College Dublin before stepping away to work in hotels. A nudge from a family connection — Frankie Whelan, a Shannon alumnus and former owner of Choice Hotels — set him on a path toward Clare in 2002.

Moving from a Dublin university campus to Shannon was an immediate cultural shift.

"I remember back then, it was very much like boarding school," Gavin recalls. "The first day with the uniform and the uniform checks really reminded me of that level of attention to detail that the lecturers give all the students.

It was daunting, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time here."

That strict attention to detail serves a clear purpose. Shannon’s curriculum builds a baseline of practical training in the first year before sending students out on mandatory international placements. For Gavin, that meant spending his second year working in Luxembourg.

"That second-year placement was vital," Gavin says. "Everything you learned in first year, you were able to carry out in actual fruition on the continent. You learn so, so much in many different departments that I wouldn't have been exposed to previously."

Beyond the practical experience, what stuck with Gavin was the tight-knit nature of the faculty — a trait that evidently hasn't changed.

"The lecturers really... it’s not like other colleges where you’re just a number. Here, you’re very much a name, and every lecturer

knows who you are. And that’s even reflective today. I come back regularly to do guest lectures or whatever it may be.

The day you leave is not the last day you spend here."

Now deeply embedded in the local business community alongside business partner Dermot Kelly, Gavin sees the college’s newly announced undergraduate degree and modern facilities as a massive win for the region and the wider trade.

"It’s really important for Shannon as a region to have a college like this," Gavin says.

"But even for our industry on a national scale, this college stands up as probably the best college in Ireland, if not Europe. It’s great to see the support from the University of Galway behind it."

That link between the college and the local economy isn't just theoretical; it’s alive in Gavin's own businesses. At the Temple Gate Hotel, their newly launched fine dining venture, Gate 96 Restaurant is already benefiting from student talent. "Amy is our assistant manager and she's currently still in college here," Gavin notes. "To have a girl with her abilities while she's still attending college is super."

As for his business partner, Dermot? Gavin jokes that because Kelly went to Atlantic Technological University (formerly GMIT) instead of Shannon, the alumni connection gives him a bit of leverage: "I get to pass on all my superior knowledge!"

While other third-level institutions offer general business degrees, O’Driscoll believes Shannon’s unique structure gives it a distinct edge in the luxury market. True to the college’s traditional model, the new programme will feature a heavy, mandatory internship placement component.

“By graduation, our traditional students have nearly two years’ worth of work experience alongside a solid, internationally recognized degree,” he says.

“There’s a huge applied educational and employment competitive advantage. The new programme will mirror that placement structure, allowing students to do internships in situ in Ireland or travel abroad.”

When asked why Shannon is the right fit to pioneer this course, O’Driscoll points to the school’s independence and history.

“Because we’re a smaller college, we’re self-contained. We’re specialists. We know the market very well, and this just fits the profile of our history and our close relationships with industry.”

For O’Driscoll, the evolution of the college mirrors his own longterm relationship with the region.

Originally from Bandon in West Cork, he initially moved to the Midwest with a short-term timeline in mind.

“I came down to check out the Midwest for one year — and 24 years later, here I am,” he smiles. “A wife, a house, a mortgage, a child, a dog, two cats, and a goldfish later. I live in Ennis now, so I’d like to think I’m an honorary Clare man at this stage, though I’m still a proud Cork man.”

During his quarter-century on the faculty teaching economics and quantitative methods, O’Driscoll also became the first internal staff member to earn a doctorate while employed at the college, graduating from the University of Limerick 12 years ago. He sees the new degree as an opportunity to kickstart fresh research into the international premium experiential markets.

Ultimately, he views the new undergraduate offering as a natural continuation of the vision started in 1951 in the basement of the old Great Southern Hotel.

“Like every workplace, you’ve got to move with the times,” O’Driscoll says. “This new degree programme is a manifestation of the college moving with the trends and the marketplace.”

Record sale of €940,000 luxury suite 'significant milestone' for Trump Doonbeg resort

A LUXURY suite at the Trump Doonbeg resort on Clare’s west coast has sold for a record €940,000, new figures show.

According to newly published figures on the Residential Property Price Register, they show that sale of the three bed Suite 20 closed on April 30th.

The €940,000 is the highest ever sale recorded for a property at Trump Doonbeg, owned by US President Donald Trump, and is €140,000 more than the €800,000 for Suite 20 when it previously changed hands on September 25th 2024.

The €940,000 tops the previous highest price, €900,000 that was secured at Trump Doonbeg for Links Cottage 163 last October.

A spokesman for Trump Doonbeg said today: "The recent sale of Suite 20 for €940,000 is a significant milestone for Trump Ireland, Doonbeg and reflects the continued strength of demand for luxury property at the resort.”

He said: “It highlights the enduring appeal of the destination, its unique coastal setting, and increasingly, the lifestyle buyers are seeking combining exceptional hospitality, excellent dining, 24hour security, and a strong calendar of social and golf events

We are confident the course will provide a fantastic stage for players such as Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, and the international field during the Amgen Irish Open this coming September.

This month also marks the 20th anniversary of The Lodge which houses the accommodation, restaurant, bar, shop and locker rooms for golfers at the resort.

The spokesman said that General Manager Joe Russell “has also been part of that journey for over 23 years and has played an integral role in the evolution and success of the resort over the past two decades.”

The spokesman said: “His leadership, alongside the dedication of many long-serving team members, has helped establish Trump Ireland as one of Europe’s leading golf and leisure destinations.

On the economic impact of The Lodge since it opened, the spokesman said: “The economic impact on West Clare over the past 20

years and has been extremely significant. The resort has become one of the region’s largest tourism employers and has helped position West Clare on the global luxury tourism map.

“Beyond direct employment, the resort supports a very broad network of local businesses and suppliers across hospitality, food production, transport, construction, tourism services, and retail.

The international exposure generated through golf tourism, luxury travel, and now the upcoming Amgen Irish Open continues to deliver substantial benefits to the wider regional economy, helping drive year-round tourism and international awareness of the area.

On this year, the spokesman said: “Business levels to date this year remain strong and broadly in line with what we experienced in 2025, which itself was one of the strongest years on record for the resort in several key segments. We continue to see healthy demand across golf, memberships, weddings, and international markets.”

The Trump Organisation has ploughed more than €40m, including the purchase price, into the resort since it came under the ownership of the Trump Organisation in February 2014.

MARISSA McCarthy radiates the kind of energetic clarity you only get from someone who knows exactly where they are supposed to be.

A Quin woman with strong ties to West Clare, experienced auctioneer Marissa has returned to the industry where she built her reputation, and is now launching her new business, LoveHome Properties.

“My tagline is Property Expertise with Heart,” McCarthy says.

“Property is definitely where my heart lies.

Even over the last 13 years while I was working in other sectors, I’d still meet

people on the street who thought I was still working as an auctioneer.

“They’d say, ‘We loved dealing with you, you were always so nice and bubbly.’ It’s that personal touch I’m bringing back.”

For Marissa, LoveHome Properties is a full-circle return to the trade she first entered in 2003.

Since moving on from her previous auctioneering role she has earned a Master’s in Strategic Management, and worked with the IDA launching international corporate startu p s .

Entrepreneurship is practically a prerequisite in the McGrath-McCarthy household. Marissa is part of an industrious Clare family, raised in Quin by her parents, Pat and Brid McGrath.

“We are all in business,” she explains. “My sister Emer is senior advisor for Bank of Ireland across Shannon, Tulla, Scariff, and Kilrush, helping new businesses secure their finance. My brother Padraig set up the P&M Golf Superstore in Ennis with Dad 22 years ago. And my other brother, Cathal, went out to Brisbane 16 years ago, where he set up his own company, Allstar Infrastructure, specialising in civil construction..”

That international connection to Australia provided a unique insight into the saying, ‘small world’. When Pat and Brid went to visit Cathal in the Australian outback, they walked into a remote shop only to bump into Quin native Nicholas McCarthy, who runs Lúnasa Farm,

a regenerative farm and butchery located in Quin.

Marissa notes, “Padraig and his wife Alison who owns My First Steps, have been amazing...They definitely motivated me and made me believe that going out on my own was a real option.”

The entrepreneurial drive stems directly from her father, Pat, a wellknown local figure who spent 35 years working in Shannon Airport, starting in the airport bars in 1969 before moving into the Airport Police and Fire Service.

“Dad was always business-minded,” McCarthy notes.

McCarthy’s decision to focus initially on the West Clare market is a deeply sentimental choice backed by commercial logic. While she went to secondary school at the Colaiste in Ennis, her family ties are anchored to the west. Her father is from Kilkee, where she has many relatives including Eleanor Corry, the primary school principal in Kilkee.

“We grew up back in Kilkee,” McCarthy says. “All my summers were spent getting the bus back there to stay with my nan and grandad; it was just the best place in the world. I remember swimming near George’s Head and down at the Pollock Holes.”

Although McCarthy has been

heavily involved in property management over the past 13 years, she acknowledges she is stepping back into a residential property market that looks very different from the pre-crash era she previously managed through. Today, she notes, the challenge isn’t finding buyers — in just three weeks of quiet marketing, she has amassed a database of 150 active buyers looking for homes.

The challenge is supply.

McCarthy has designed a bespoke “selling pack” to guide clients through the entire legal, financial, and logistical minefield from day one.

When she isn’t valuing homes or keeping up with her new Local Enterprise Office mentoring sessions — which have her preparing to launch the business onto TikTok next — McCarthy remains heavily woven into the fabric of Clare life.

She is a member of the Quin National School parents’ association, rides horses, plays golf at Dromoland Golf Club, and is a member of the Quin n Tonic local choir.

Looking ahead to her business venture in the community, McCarthy says simply. “I want to take the stress entirely off the seller and the purchaser — you can’t forget the purchaser. I’m excited to be back helping buyers and sellers across County Clare.”

Chicago & New York routes return to Shannon

TRANSATLANTIC travel from Shannon Airport has been boosted this week with the return of seasonal daily routes to Chicago and New York.

Capacity from Shannon to the United States has been increased for summer 2026. In what is its largest schedule in seventeen years, Shannon will be offering forty routes to the US, UK and Europe.

From Friday (May 22nd), United Airlines’ non-stop service to Chicago O’Hare resumes, followed on Saturday 23rd May by Delta’s service to New York–JFK. Both routes will operate daily, reinforcing Shannon’s position as a leading gateway between Ireland and North America.

Delta’s JFK service offers over 51,000 seats for the summer, while United’s Chicago route adds a further 44,000 seats. These services bring total transatlantic seat capacity via Shannon Airport to 340,000 for the summer season, representing a five percent increase on the same period last year.

Aer Lingus will also increase capacity on its Boston service, with additional frequencies operating from 20th May to 13th July, expanding from seven to ten flights per week and providing almost 9,000 additional seats.

Speaking ahead of the resumption of the US summer schedule, Ray O’Driscoll, CEO of The Shannon Airport Group, outlined, “It’s fantastic to see the return of the Delta, JFK and United Chicago routes for the summer.

Transatlantic services play a central role in Shannon Airport’s offering, and these services complete a strong network of year‑round routes to the US”.

He added, “These flights are also hugely important for the region, bringing thousands of US visitors directly into the West of Ireland. This connectivity supports our tourism and hospitality industries.”

Passengers travelling from Shannon also benefit from using the airport’s full US Preclearance facility, saving time and arriving in the United States as domestic passengers.

In addition, the free Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app

allows eligible travellers to complete part of the process in advance, making the experience even quicker.

Shannon Airport has invested significantly in enhancing its facilities. The addition of 1,000 new spaces in the Park4Less car park provides customers with greater flexibility across both short‑stay and long‑stay options.

The airport’s security screening technology allows passengers to keep liquids and gels of 100ml or less, together with electronic devices, in their bags, speeding up the security process and making the airport journey smoother for families, holidaymakers and business travellers.

Qualifying for All-Ireland series ‘was crucial’ says Lohan as Clare answer big questions

by Páraic McMahon HUGE QUESTIONS were asked of Clare’s hurlers following their fifteen point hammering to Limerick but manager Brian Lohan said they answered them with their convincing eleven point victory which dumped All-Ireland holders Tipperary out of the championship.

Twelve months on from Liam Cahill’s Tipperary coming to Ennis and ending Clare’s reign as All-Ireland champions, it was a role reversal in Semple Stadium with Lohan’s side fully deserving and comfortable 1-25 0-17 winners on Saturday evening.

A response was needed from Clare in the wake of their poor showing against Limerick a fortnight ago, Lohan outlined. “We had worked hard all year and to play as poorly as we did last two weeks was a real disappointment for the whole group, we needed a response and after looking at what the U20s did the other night with the heart and resilience they showed, comparing that to how we performed against Limerick was a real disappointment for our group so we had to respond and we did, that was crucial”.

He added, “We’re delighted with how we played and the attitude, we’re delighted with all of the players and the full panel that we have, we really

dug in over the last two weeks after a very poor performance against Limerick”.

Clare needed to respond following the manner of the Limerick loss, the All-Ireland winning player and manager stressed. “When you play as badly as you played against Limerick there is a huge amount of question marks over the whole group and what we are doing, are we wasting our time at this so there was a lot of question marks about the group, we needed a response and we got a response”.

Starting strong was among the lessons from the Limerick outing, he said. “We were conscious that against Limerick we were 1-5 0-4 down and we missed an open goal and then we just fell apart. We were very conscious of that and very conscious of making a good start and not fading away after that, we wanted to push on and we did”.

Spirit, attitude and determination which is normally an ever-present within Lohan’s side was completely absent in their first loss of the year which needed to be rectified, he flagged. “There’s a good attitude in the group, great workrate, a really positive group that we are dealing with, they work very hard, we didn’t show any of that, none of that against Limerick, that was the most disappointing

part, there was an awful lot at stake for us, we needed a response and our supporters needed a response”.

Munster success for Clare’s U20s served as a real lift for the seniors, Lohan admitted.

“We got a massive boost from our U20s on Wednesday with the way they played and obviously getting the result was massive for that group and the county, there was a bit of a pep in our step coming into

training on Thursday night, it was a real boost for the county but it was badly needed”.

Getting results away from home in the Munster championship is not easy, the Shannon man said. “It is such a difficult place to come and to win, all these matches are so difficult, we’re delighted to get the performance and the result”.

With a similar vein of thinking, he pointed out that getting a result in Páirc Uí Chaoimh against Cork on Sunday will be far from straight forward. “It is tough always and it is tough here, going away to Cork and away to Tipp is always tough but in fairness all those stadiums whether it is Thurles or Cork they are super stadiums”.

Ian Galvin’s goal with Clare’s first score of the second half made Saturday’s win “comfortable,” he noted. “We managed the game fairly well, we finished out as convincing winners”.

Beating Tipperary at least guarantees Clare a place in the All-Ireland series which “was crucial for us,” the manager acknowledged. “It is just one game, it is very competitive and what it does mean is that we are out of the Munster championship and we would have taken that at the start of the year because it is a very competitive championship, we’re delighted with our group and with winning two matches”.

Diarmuid Stritch on his starting debut finished with six points and certainly took the chance given to him by management. “He was excellent, probably missed a couple as well so there is always areas to improve on”. Lohan continued, “he did great work at midfield and centre forward, but that is what we expect of him, he has been doing very well in the league, he has taken his opportunities, he really attacks the game when he comes in, delighted for Diarmuid and the full panel”.

Stritch’s experienced clubmate John Conlon returned to the Clare fold for the first time in this year’s championship.

“He was outstanding, he is one of those guys who comes with a great attitude whether he is starting or not starting, his attitude really is tremendous, his workrate, how he is in the group, the leadership he shows in the group and pulling things together and that doesn’t always happen for your top guys or leaders but it does for him when he is with us,” Lohan said.

Speaking in Semple Stadium, Lohan was optimistic that Mark Rodgers would be available for Clare against Cork.

“He is okay but I haven’t gone into the dressing room so I will see when I get in, I was talking to his Mam outside and she is saying he thinks he is okay”.

‘Our year was on the line’ - Ryan & Clare issue response to reignite championship campaign

by Páraic McMahon GETTING back in the reckoning was the objective for Clare’s senior hurlers when they travelled to Thurles on Saturday and they are now firmly back in the championship equation as noted by wing back Diarmuid Ryan.

Clare’s eleven point win over Tipperary has secured qualification to the All-Ireland series and keeps their hopes of reaching the Munster final alive.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, defender Diarmuid Ryan explained that the focus was firmly about getting back on track. “We targeted after two weeks ago to get back in contention, to come down to Thurles and do a job, it was a great win but it is only two points, we’ve set the target of getting out of Munster and

getting to a Munster final, we put up a performance and the scoreline helped with that, we left a lot of scores out there but we are delighted to come out and get the job done”.

It was the manner of the Limerick defeat and the lack of performance that was most hurtful for the Clare players, Diarmuid admitted. “We didn’t do ourselves justice at all, you won’t win every game but the manner in which we lost wasn’t great, we had to forget about it quickly because we knew there was a massive job ahead and our year was on the line, we came down and everyone to a man did their job today”.

He continued, “There was soul searching done, we knew our job and everyone to a man who came off the bench, the U20s did their job during the week and it brought a serious

buzz to everyone, we had a real bounce coming down today and we brought it on. The intensity of everyone was top class, it was great to be a part of it”.

Diarmuid’s older brother Conor an All-Ireland winner in 2013 was part of the backroom team for Terence Fahy’s U20s who won the Munster title on Wednesday which gave the seniors a massive lift. “The three boys since they have come in (Mark Sheedy, Ronan Kilroy, Jamie Moylan) have been superb, the bounce they have brought since they came in and the leadership they have shown, it has been alluded to with Ronan Kilroy and how he has approached the last few weeks, he has inspired all of us the last couple of weeks to go out and give a performance. It was unbelievable what the U20s did, they

gave us a lift and we carried it in, the support carried us over the line, we had savage support again tonight”.

Semple Stadium is a venue that Clare love playing in, a factor that helps for fixtures

like Saturday when so much was at stake. “We love Thurles, every team loves to play in Thurles which unfortunately for Tipp as their home venue everyone loves coming down here and every county gets good support here so no better place to come and try put your best foot forward”.

Now that they are back in the mix, the primary school teacher is optimistic Clare can drive forward against Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday.

“Kick on and see where the year takes us. We were disappointed with last year, our year isn’t done and we certainly won’t rest on our laurels, we’ll get back quick because it is a one week turnaround and we don’t have much time to think about it. We will reset after enjoying this feeling, get back to training during the week for Cork”.

Clare sweat on injured trio for effective Munster semi-final

by Páraic McMahon INJURIES have been mounting for Clare’s senior hurlers as they bid to qualify for a fourth Munster final in five seasons.

An eleven point win over Tipperary on Saturday has Clare’s campaign back on track following their fifteen point loss to Limerick in their second outing.

There are a number of scenarios that will be clearer by Sunday evening which will determine who lines out in this year’s Munster final.

Should Limerick defeat Tipperary in TUS Gaelic Grounds on Sunday they will advance to the Munster final. If this is the outcome in Limerick, Clare need to beat Cork by four points or more to set up a rematch with their neighbours.

If Tipperary record their first win of the championship then either a draw between Clare and Cork or a win for Clare would result in a Clare versus Cork Munster final.

They are the scenarios but Brian Lohan and his management are unlikely to be picking from a full deck this weekend.

Injuries forced Tony Kelly, Mark Rodgers and Ryan Taylor from the field before the final whistle in Clare’s victory over All-Ireland champions Tipp with concerns over their involvement in Páirc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday.

Rodgers was first off the field with a reckless challenge from Tipperary midfielder Willie Connors leaving the Scariff attacker dazed. The freetaker was temporarily replaced for four minutes with eight minutes played before returning to the field but he was later replaced on twenty four minutes.

An ankle injury led to the departure of captain Kelly with fifty six minutes played in Thurles. He left Semple Stadium in a protective boot.

Prior to this, Taylor was forced off with forty five minutes played in the contest, he came out worse for wear after a stray pass left him in a tricky situation and a shoulder injury was sustained. The Clooney/Quin clubman departed Thurles with his arm in a sling.

He is expected to be in the Clare first fifteen this weekend.

Protective measures have been utilised by Clare’s medical team to aid recovery of panel members who have sustained injury with a number of players leaving Cusack Park following the Limerick defeat in protective boots and slings yet they were fit enough to take to the field against Limerick a fortnight later.

However, the shorter turnaround of a week for the Cork game compared with the gap between the Limerick and

is set for another three weeks on the sideline after picking up an ankle injury in their 2-22 1-23 win over Limerick.

Ciaran Joyce who had nailed down the full-back jersey sustained a cruciate ligament injury in the Limerick game which has ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

‘Trust your instincts’ - Sheedy shows nerves of steel with superb shootout saves

by Páraic McMahon TRUSTING his instincts was the key to making three epic penalty saves for Clare U20 goalkeeper Mark Sheedy.

Sheedy was more than just the hero of the hour but rather the main man from 19:35 to 21:52 in TUS Gaelic Grounds on Wednesday when stepping up with three saves in the penalty shootout as well as dispatching to the net in a memorable win for Clare’s U20 hurlers.

It is not an exaggeration to say Sheedy’s saves were among some of the finest ever seen nor is it Clare bias to label his input as one of the greatest ever GAA goalkeeping displays in a shootout.

His agility and shot stopping was so impressive that it captured attention all over the world and was even named as ESPN’s number one sporting moment on Sports Centre’s daily top ten.

Speaking to The Clare Echo in the midst of Clare’s celebrations, Mark reflected, “It is hard to sum it up because it is so frantic at the moment, I’m so proud of the lads out there, they have been battling away for eighty or ninety minutes, we’re so delighted to get over the line”.

Not alone could he stop them but Mark was able to rifle his own penalty past Paddy McCormack. “I was on them last year for the club in the premier intermediate championship and it stood to me. We were practicing them last week, we know when it is ourselves and Tipp that we are both brilliant teams, we knew it would go down to the wire, we didn’t predict penalties but we certainly practiced them on the off chance and we were lucky we did”.

STARVED of silverware at the U20 grade, Clare brought an immense appetite for success according to one of their leaders, Ronan Kilroy.

Kilroy is the only member of the Clare U20 panel to have played senior championship for his county and his colleagues on both squads have lauded his leadership in both set-ups this year.

Ronan popped up with points on the tenth and thirty eighth minute from centre forward in Clare’s Munster U20 final win over Tipperary on Wednesday, describing their penalty shootout win as “absolutely unbelievable”. He said, “I’m not really able to sum it up, when the final whistle blew I didn’t know if it was sudden death or we were taking five again, I just dropped to my knees, it is absolutely unbelievable, there’s no probably no better way to win it but fair play to the Tipp lads, they are a credit to themselves, they have beaten us in Harty finals and U20 finals before, I’m over the moon”.

His application and workrate has been evident since his time as a county minor, Ronan has been well noted for his turnovers, hooks and blocks but none were as inspiring as his diving block on Stefan Tobin with seventy six minutes played as Clare led by a point in extra time. His intervention even prompted S&C coach Conor Shannon to leap to his feet in celebration.

Recalling the block, Kilroy remarked, “The dive made it look a bit better. One thing we go for is the tackles, it is one of the biggest signs in the dressing rooms is on tackles and it is simple, if you work harder and tackle more than the other team then you will

come out on top no matter what. We always say how can another team beat us if we work harder than them, that is what we go off”.

En route to winning the Munster title, Clare’s character and trait of leaving it late was evident in their victories over Waterford, Limerick, Tipperary and Cork. “It seems like this group doesn’t like winning easy alright, it does make it extra special winning like that, it is a credit to the subs and the thirty eight man panel too, they are all impacting coming on, it is great. The thirty eight man panel, Terence and his team have all been brilliant,” the Ennis native commented.

Balancing commitments between senior and U20 is no easy feat, the UL student told The Clare Echo. “It is slightly tough at times especially considering I’m playing corner back for the seniors and up in the forwards with the U20s but I am enjoying it so much, I’ve gained so much experience from being inside with them especially the leaders, like I am one of the older lads here on this U20 team and I’m taking advice from the leaders on the senior team and bringing it back here which is great, the standard people set and how lads go about sessions, I’m so delighted to be in Brian’s team”.

With his displays in saffron and blue, Ronan has always done his club the Banner immensely proud and he felt their success in capturing a provincial title achieved their objective of making the Clare supporters satisfied. “We were starved of silverware at U20, we lost three Munster finals in the last few years so it is great for the Banner county and to make them supporters proud”.

Sink or swim for Clare’s footballers in maiden Tailteann Cup campaign

by Páraic McMahon CLARE’S footballers are in must-win territory if they are to keep their season alive.

All has not gone according to plan for Clare in 2026, particularly when it comes to their home fixtures but they have a chance to go about rectifying that with the visit of Longford to Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chíosóg on Saturday (17:00).

Emmet McMahon is expected to be named among the substitutes for the first time this season. The Kildysart man has been out of action with an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained last July.

His colleague in attack and on the staff of St Caimin’s Community School in Shannon, Dermot Coughlan remains an injury doubt

for the weekend with a groin injury.

Captain Cillian Rouine will return to the side at centre back. The Ennistymon clubman missed out on Clare’s poor showing against Offaly with a bad bout of a flu virus. However, he has recovered and has been back in action in training and will lead his county into battle this weekend.

Ruled out for the weekend are Eoin Cleary, Darragh Bohannon and Stephen Ryan while Seán McAllister is coming closer to the reckoning but an injury to his AC joint in his shoulder is likely to keep him out of the matchday twenty six.

Do or die territory needs to be embraced

by Clare’s footballers, manager Paul Madden stressed. “It is knockout now, maybe that is what we need to be under

that bit more pressure”.

It will be the first knockout meeting between Clare and Longford since 2015 when a fourteen man Longford managed by Jack Sheedy dumped Colm Collins’ men out of the championship with a 2-12 1-12 win in Ennis.

Cleary is the only member of the Clare side which featured eleven years ago still involved with the county seniors.

Not that Clare underestimated Longford eleven years ago but they certainly cannot afford to do the same this weekend. Producing an improved performance will be the primary focus from the Banner camp while supporters will hope a less defensive approach is adapted for Clare to try kick on in the Tailteann Cup.

Ennistymon’s Twomey takes charge of Munster minor final

GARY Twomey took charge of his first Munster minor football final this week.

Ennistymon’s Gary officiated his first provincial decider when Kerry and Cork clash in the Munster final in Páirc Uí Rinn on Monday evening. The tie went to extra time with the Rebels prevailing 1-13 0-14 in a memorable encounter in front of 2,066 spectators.

Not alone is Gary one of the more promising referees in Co Clare but his potential has been recognised outside the county with his appointment as the man in the middle for the Munster minor final testament to this. His umpires for the game included Raymond Foudy, Seán Twomey, Joseph Carroll and Niall Twomey.

This was his third game in the 2026 minor championship. He was referee for Limerick’s 1-9 1-4 vic-

tory over Tipperary at the end of March in the first phase of the championship while he also officiated the earlier meeting of Cork and Kerry in the campaign where the Rebels prevailed 3-18 1-14 in Austin Stack Park, Tralee.

Eoin Keane of Corofin another up and coming whistler from Clare also took charge of two games in this year’s minor campaign. He was a linesman for his North Clare colleague in Monday’s decider.

Last year, Gary took charge of the Clare IFC final between Corofin and Cooraclare, delivering a very solid performance over the hour. He also handled the Munster minor championship encounter between Limerick and Waterford in phase one of the competition.

A past pupil of Ennistymon CBS, Gary completed the referees foundation course in March 2023. His potential had been flagged by former

Clare GAA referees administrator Seanie McMahon during an interview with The Clare Echo in February 2024, “It is worth noting that Gary Twomey only did the foundation

course in March 2023 and due to his performances and feedback from mentors he has progressed and shown promise”.

Clare target return to All-Ireland quarter-finals

by Seamus Hayes WITH league honours safely secured Clare camogie’s focus is now very much on the All-Ireland championship which gets under way on this Saturday at Zimmer Biomet Pairc Chiósog where their opponents will be Dublin, the team they defeated in the league final which was played at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny.

Kilmaley’s Caoimhe Cahill who suffered a shoulder injury early in that game is ruled out but otherwise manager Eugene Foudy and his backroom team have a full squad from which to select Saturday’s starting side.

“The league is over and done with. The league campaign saw many players gain valuable experience. This is a new competition which has our total focus. We have five games in the group

stage and our aim is to qualify for the knock out stage. The focus is one game at a time and right now our sole focus is on Dublin”, manager Foudy told The Clare Echo this week.

“We played Dublin twice in the league, drew with them in Abbotstown before beating them in the final. They will want to reverse that result. They are an experienced outfit who played in Division 1A last year so we know that we are facing a big test”, the Inagh-Kilnamona clubman added.

Shortly after the league final win, Clare suffered a heart-breaking one point loss, after extra time, to Waterford in the Munster championship, a game played at Cusack Park.

Since then they have trained hard and played some challenge games against the likes of Galway and Cork. “We also competed in the under 23 championship and

between that and the challenge games, all of the panel have got game time. As I said Dublin will be driven by the fact that we beat them in the league final and you learn a lot in defeat”, manager Foudy said.

The manager believes that “home advantage can be a help and we have a 100% record from our home games in the league this season. We hope to make our home venue a fortress and win both of our games there in this campaign”.

Clare are jointly captained by half backs Abby Walsh (Scariff-/Ogonnelloe) and Clare Hehir (Inagh/Kilnamona), both of whom were outstanding throughout the league.

Goalkeeper Doireann Murphy (Clarecastle) and full forward Lorna McNamara (Feakle/Killanena) neither of whom were available last season, have played key parts in the team’s winning run

in the league which has earned them division 1 A status for next season Elsewhere the Daly sisters, Andrea O’Keeffe, Roisin Begley, Aine O’Loughlin and ZiYan Spillane have been prominent and followers will be looking to them to again deliver this week.

“The girls have trained really really hard, there is a very positive vibe in the camp and we are looking forward to the upcoming campaign”, the manager said.

Clare will have three games in as many weeks.

They will follow Saturday’s home tie with an away game against Wexford and then it’s back to home ground for a meeting with neighbours Limerick. The will then travel to play Kilkenny before concluding their round robin schedule away to Offaly.

TULLA UTD will be clashing with Conor McGregor’s Black Forge FC in the fifth round of the FAI Junior Cup. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight and lightweight champion, McGregor is unlikely to be in The Cragg this Sunday but his ‘pub team’ will be looking to take down Tulla in the national competition.

Mike Moloney’s side are the only Clare representatives left in the FAI Junior Cup competition following the elimi-

nations of Avenue Utd and Newmarket Celtic in the fourth round.

An away 3-2 win against Waterford outfit Hibernians FC saw Tulla Utd progress to the fifth round. They had led 2-0 following goals from Callum Casey and Dara Ryan but conceded two goals in the space of four minutes to rely on a winner from their star man Daragh Corry to send them through.

Close to 100 teams play classic in memory of Carmel & Ena

JUST short of one hundred teams played in the team of four classic at Woodstock last week in aid of the Haematology Oncology Day Unit.

The competition was organised in memory of Carmel Russell McGann and Ena Higgins.

In the men’s section the winners were Cathal Nagle, John Dempsey, Eugene Killeen and Donnacha Dunne with 109 points, one ahead of Mike, Oisin and Cathal Kelly and John O’Connor. Third place with 106 points went to Kevin, Frankie and Diarmuid Toner and Pat Barry.

The ladies winners were Eilis Neville, Hannah O’Brien, Ramona Gleeson and Mary McNamara with 95 points from Cora O’Toole, Dorethea Madden, Deirdre Cooney and Dolores Fox with 93 points.

Marianne McGough, Claire Ruane, Shauna Moylaan and Susie Meehan were third, also with 93.

Diarmuid Toner won the men’s long drive while Oisin Kelly won nearest the pin.

Fiona Kinsella won the ladies long drive and Joan Murphy won nearest the pin.

The Russell, McGann and Higgins families thanked all for their support.

DROMOLAND GOLF CLUB: Dromoland’s play in pink day in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute

was held last week. The 18 hole team event was won by Lisa Quinn, Michelle McCarthy, Louise Guilfoyle and Susie Meehan with 94 points on countback from Dorothea Madden, Elaine Morris, Brid Gurnett and Ann Gallery.

Third place with 92 points went to Annette Collins, Eimear Danaher, Justine McCarthy and Mary O’Donoghue.

Ann Gallery won the long drive while Susan Gilmore was nearest the pin.

The ladies 9 hole play in pink competition was won by Colette Colleran with 22 points from Aislinn Keogh.

Billy O’Mahony won the men’s 9 hole competition with 20 points from Matthew Cooney.

The ladies Galway Crystal competition was won by Liz Skehan with 41 points from Louise Guilfoyle with 35.

Dorothy Brennan was third, also with 35. Mairéad Bergin won the gross while Leslie O’Flynn and Deirdre Cooney won the nines. Leslie O’Flynn had the longest drive while Dorothy Brennan was nearest the pin.

Geraldine Ryan won the 9 hole competition with 19 points while the weekly 9 hole competition was won by Sinéad Burke Keogh.

The weekend’s men’s 18 hole stableford was won by Shane O’Brien with 42 points from Noel O’Connor and Diarmuid O’Connor, both with 38. Darren Malone won the

category for handicaps of 20 and over while Ross Kenny won the gross.

Brendan Lennon won the 9 hole competition from Alan O’Flanagan.

WOODSTOCK GOLF CLUB: The captain’s fourball betterball at Woodstock was won by Tommy Flynn and John McGrath with 47 points from Ross Darmody and Colm O’Callaghan.

Winners in the 2’s competition were Michael Coughlan, Evan Green, Brian Keogh and Barry McNamara.

The competition this weekend will be the AMR open singles while the Ozone Health & Fitness May medal will be played off the white tees.

The junior foursomes boys team defeated Shannon in difficult weather conditions but the mixed foursomes team lost to East Clare.

The club’s J.B. Carr team will take on Shannon in the first leg of their Clare final on Friday with the return leg at Woodstock next Wednesday.

KILRUSH GOLF CLUB: The Clare Oil sponsored open singles at Kilrush was won by Bill O’Reilly with 40 points from Brian Scanlan with 38. John Clancy was third with 37 while Ruari Young won the gross.

Category winners were Terry O’Hare, Pascal Looney and Finbar McMahon while the nines were won by Michael Shannon Snr and Ian Dillon.

ENNIS GOLF CLUB: The winners of the men’s Holmpatrick qualifier at Ennis were Michael Clancy and Mark O’Brien with 45 points.

The senior ladies scramble was won by Clare Pyne, Eileen Daly and Mary Glynn from Therese Lillis, Brid Cunningham, Marie Dillen and Joan Tassie.

The weekly ladies stableford competition was won by Marina Varden with 42 points from Maureen Lynch with 35.

Division winners were Flor Coffey, Patricia O’Reilly and Marie Connolly.

Claire Ruane won the ladies 8 hole competition with 16 points while category winners were Carmel Verling, Mary Woulfe and Claire Kennelly.

Last week’s senior men’s competition was won by Noel Pyne, Martin Coffey, Brian Tuohy and Pat Rutherford with 76 points on countback from Andrew McGloin, Jim Farrell, Liam McCannon and Jim Sheridan. Ger O’Brien, Ger Hanrahan, Tom Fox and Frank Cullinan were third with 75.

by Kieran Ryan with 39 points from Robert Cantwell and Graham Wilkins.

Ennis lost to Shannon in the first round of the ladies intermediate

foursomes on a score of 3-1.

SHANNON GOLF CLUB: Dean and Pat McKenna won the men’s fourball competition with 46 points while Harry Grew won the 9 hole competition with 17 points.

In the men’s green tees challenge Rory Hennessy won with 38 points from Daithi Lohan with 37. Gary Fitzgibbon and Adam O’Connor both scored 36 while Damian Casey won the gross.

Wednesday’s men’s open singles was won by Wayne Regan with 37 points from Thomas J. McMahon and Tommy Lynch.

This week’s ladies competition was won by Noeleen Neylon with 71 nett from Suzanne McMahon while Ettie Gallery was third.

Michelle Pyke won the gross.

EAST CLARE GOLF CLUB: Sunday’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition was won by Deirdre Tuohy with 37 points from Joan Crotty and Brid Gurnett.

The ladies Wednesday competition was won by Marie A. Kelly, Kay Grimes, Mary Stritch and Mary Hogan.

The senior men’s competition was won by Kieran McNamara, John Nihill and Nick Ryan from Brendan Moloney, Mike Noonan and Willie Roche.

The mixed scramble on Friday was won by Pat McNamara, Carmel Dillon, Mary Farrell and Breda O’Loghlin.

GORT GOLF CLUB:

Friday’s open singles stableford saw Damien Burke win category one with 40 points. Jason Gallagher won category two while Diarmuid Tobin won category three.

Gavin Lally won the gross.

The weekend’s fourball stableford was won by Matthew and Adam O’Halloran with 50 points from Martin Flaherty and Michael T. Ryan. Gavin Lally and Joe Moran won the gross.

S I X M I L E B R I D G E GOLF SOCIETY: Woodstock was the venue for the second outing of the season on Saturday when Dave Watson emerged as the winner from Eric Purcell and Pa Mulready. Ian Mulready and Adam Merriman won the nines while John Collins won the par 3.

The next outing for Colin Murphy’s captain’s prize takes place at Nenagh on June 6.

KILDYSART GOLF SOCIETY: Members of Kildysart Golf Society travelled to Esker Hills in Offaly on Sunday.

The winner was Mark Cottam, who also won nearest the pin, from Josh Bravender and Tony McMahon.

Paudie Hickey won the guests section from Ben Ryan while John Clancy won the longest drive. Sean Finnucane and Ken Breen won the nines.

The society’s next outing will be on June 28 to Portumna.

Clare greyhounds strike in Shelbourne Park

THE long trip to Shelbourne Park on Friday night proved successful for Banner Greyhounds, In the final of the Tote Betting A1 N8 525 sweepstake worth €2,000 the winner was Ballyea Warrior owned

by Noel Gavin of Ballyea and trained

by Declan McDonagh of Liscannor, the winning time here was 28.17.

Race two was round one of the 1XBet Islandbridge SSO Stake here Tiermana Dream was the winner in a time of 18.30, the Clare greyhound is owned by the Zero-Zero-Syndicate and trained in Kilrush by Colm Fitzgerald, Colm will be returning to the same venue with double interest on this Friday night for the second rounds as Flyers Penney which he also trains finish second in her heat.

Friday night’s ten race Galway card featured three stake finals all over 525 yards in Novice ,A5 and A6 grades with the concluding A2 graded contest the top graded event on the card which drew an excellent attendance to the College Road venue.

kandchance in the red jacket was away smartly as Rydar Rocket and Glenwood Sheamus began well towards the outer as they raced towards the opening bend where the Declan McDonagh of Liscannor trained Norfolkandchance tracked well to extend his advantage to two lengths over Glenwood Sheamus as they entered the back straight.

Racing along the back the son of Ballyhimikin Jet and Raha Gogo extended his advantage to four lengths as Glengar Sofia joined the chase but the Norfolk-And-Chance owned Norfolkandchance was home and hosed on the crown of the home turn scoring by four and a half lengths from Glengar Sofia at the line in 29.27.

Cragataska Black and Alva Chase were both away well in the A5 graded 525 yards contest and as they reached the opening bend the Declan McDonagh trained Alva Chase used the inside line to take a couple of lengths out of his rivals as he turned down the back straight.

Racing along the back Alva Chase (Jaytee Taylor-Luna Rocket) opened

up a three length advantage on his rivals as Pronto Bucks and Cragataska Black gave chase. Off the home bend the Declan and Gerard Lillis of Cooraclare owned runner began to tread water but he saw off the renewed effort of Cragataska Black by a length and a half in 29.63. It proved to be a night to remember for the Declan McDonagh Kennels with these two winners at Galway and one winner at Shelbourne Park.

The opening contest of the night was an A7 graded 525 yards contest in which Drimeen Jetty was away well in the centre of the track and show pace to lead from the wide running Lissatouk Robbie with Heathlawn Devil in third place as they reached the turn. Taking the bend the Seamus McMahon of Cooraclare owned Lissatouk Robbie ran right round his rivals to show narrowly in front entering the back straight. Racing along the back Lissatouk Robbie and Drimeen Jetty continued to match strides before the former went a length clear off the home bend.

Close home Drimeen Jetty rallied

again but Lissatouk Robbie (Deerjet Sydney & Lissatouk Poppy) prevailed by a short head at the line in 29.44.

Cloonoon Annie was away well towards the inside in the S4 graded sprint contest but she was quickly joined on the outside of the track by Crinkhill Ranger and the striped jacketed Glasheen Model who just edged to the front as they closed in on the opening bend. Continuing her progress out wide the Brendan Browne of Kilkee owned Glasheen Model led by two lengths from Crinkhill Ranger on the crown of the home bend. Clear off the home turn Glasheen Model (Dromana Bucko-Glasheen Covid) had two and a half lengths to spare over Grangeview Rocko at the line in 19.29.

As the traps rose for the Final of the Talking Dogs A6 525 Stake Mollys Ambition was just a bout best away from her trap five berth but on the run towards the opening bend she was joined by Ballygibbon Smok along the inner as Island Ivy appeared on the wide outmoded as they rounded the opening bend.

Swinging down the back Island Ivy took over in front from Mollys Ambition but approached the halfway mark the Johnny Burke of Tubber and Gerry Maloney Of Clarecastle owned Threebagsofmeat swept through along the inner before taking a definite advantage at the third bend . Quickly taking command the daughter of Ballyhimikin Jet and Grangeview Nifty drew right away to defeat the staying on Guideys Freaky by three and a half lengths in 29.59.

Down Limerick way there was a nice double for Myles Cummins of Newmarket-on-Fergus as both Snuggie Tasha and Snuggie Carson landed their respective contests.

The first to prevail was Tasha as she sealed a two length victory over Tally Ho Storm in second. The 3/1 chance arrived late to seal a two length victory, in 28.91. In the very next race, Carson sealed the double as he made every inch of the running. Drawn in trap one, the 5/2 chance came home three lengths clear of Foyle Con in 28.74.
