TEMPATURES in Clare could hit 30C by the end of this week with the county’s water supply coming close to breaking point. Shannon recorded the second highest temperatures in the country this week, hitting 29.6C on Monday. Met Éireann’s weather station at Shannon Airport recorded 15.2 hours of unbroken sunshine on Tuesday. Rain is not forecast in Co Clare until later next week. Sunshine has led to a swell in visitors to coastal parts of Clare and along Lough Derg in East Clare. Businesses including The Frozen Spoon have had record sales of ice-cream. “Thursday was the busiest day in my eight years and Saturday was my busiest day for ice cream. It is a huge injection,”
owner Joe Beakey told The Clare Echo of the successful mix of Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy and sunshine. Pressure is mounting on Clare’s water network with a tanker operation instigated by Uisce Éireann in North Clare where reservoirs were at risk of running out of water. St Brigid’s Well in Liscannor ran dry while the Cliffs of Moher faced a potential temporary closure where supply was running low and its network extends as far as Doolin. Burst water mains led to Clare’s biggest towns, Ennis and Shannon being without supply on Monday with crews working through the night to restore water.
