MORE than 2,200 people are waiting for appointments at Ennis Hospital - more than half of whom are cardiology patients. The shocking new figures from the National Treatment Purchase Fund show that there has been a 30 per cent increase in the number of people waiting for appointments in the county hospital, something which has been described as a “systemic issue”. Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Councillor Mary Howard (FG), says that “the system seems to be struggling to keep pace with demand. “Particularly worrying is the situation in cardiology, where many patients face long delays, and a quarter
have been waiting over 18 months”. Councillor Howard, who sits on the Regional Health Forum Mid West, noted that it is “equally alarming” that there has been a 60 per cent increase in the general surgery waiting list, which jumped from 102 patients in February to 164 in March. “This sharp rise in just one month suggests either a sudden surge in demand or a reduction in available resources.” Councillor Howard admits that a change is desperately needed for not only patients but also the healthcare professionals working in the hospital. “Without intervention, waiting lists are likely to continue growing, placing further pressure on both patients and healthcare professionals.” Full Story P7
