COUNTY CLARE will continue to be gripped with traffic chaos with protesting to enter a third day on the primary routes of the county. Protests over the rising cost of fuel have taken over the county’s main road network since Tuesday morning with organisers stressing they are “in it for the long haul”. Hundreds of vehicles have been involved in causing traffic delays and mounting road blocks in a deliberate attempt to clog up the roads of Clare and Ireland. Frustration is beginning to rise among the Clare public who have had no impact in causing the price of fuel to increase but are also feeling the consequences of the road blocks. Cancer and dialysis patients from Clare have missed scheduled appointments. On Wednesday evening,

Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan (FF) warned protestors that nobody is above the law. “Democracy cannot be dictated to by an unelected group whose actions are now damaging the Irish public. No one is above the law and those breaking the law should know that there are consequences for unlawful activity”. Lakefield Service Station said on Wednesday they have sold out of petrol and marked gas oil and have been delayed receiving their latest delivery of fuel due to the protests. Organisers of the protest in Clare have admitted they have not made contact with politicians and are waiting to receive a call before they stand down. “If people at home have problems with these protests they should be ringing our local TDs to get up to the Dáil and start waking the Dáil up,” said Cathal O’Donoghue of C&C Executive Travel.
