ST JOHN’s NATIONAL School in Cratloe took top honours at the Cork Choral Festival.

High notes were hit in Cratloe following the announcement it won the prestigious Irish Federation of Musicians Trophy for their

performance of Iníon a Phalaitínigh in the national competition for schools at the Cork Choral Festival.

Both primary and post-primary schools were in the competition. The song is based on the story of the Palatines who came to Ireland in 1709 from Germany. They settled in Rathkeale, Ardpatrick and Ballyseedy among other places.

Irish Music was interested in this song because of the Palatine connection between Ballyseedy and Glenosheen, his native place.

Sixmilebridge GAA apply for 8 new floodlights

SIXMILEBRIDGE GAA have applied for the erection of 8 floodlights at their Cappa Lodge grounds.

The fifteen time Clare Senior Hurling Champions made the application to Clare County Council late last month as part of ongoing efforts to improve facilities and member experience in the community.

Located next to the recently opened €1.2 million Sixmilebridge GAA Arena, the Cappa Lodge pitch acts as a secondary facility for the hurling club whose main pitch of O’Garney Park is situated in the centre of the village, where the majority of senior fixtures are held.

An earlier application for the development was previously withdrawn due to it being submitted under the wrong name. Conditional planning permission was previously granted for a concrete seated spectator stand at the

site.

A letter by Club Chairman Syl O’Conor is included as part of the application that outlines the hurling club’s commitment to community development within the village. The letter states that “Sixmilebridge GAA Club, which is part of the GAA, is a community based volunteer organization promoting Gaelic games and participation. The club operates as a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to promote the game of hurling through active participation of the local community”.

The letter also points out that The Bridge were granted Voluntary Organisation Tax Clearance Status in October 2025, in accordance with the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997. Other Clare sports clubs who have benefited from this status in the last year include the Ennis branch of the Irish Taekwondo Association, St. Senan’s GAA of Kilkee and Inagh-Kilnamona GAA, who have also recently submitted

an application for works at their secondary pitch.

The 8 floodlights are proposed to be situated at the current 145m by 73.7m hurling pitch. The aluminium floodlights have an input voltage of between 220 and 400V and are powered by LED light source engines, intended to improve playing conditions during dark winter evenings.

Clare County Council has earmarked the 16th of July as its due date for a decision on the matter. Members of the public are free to make submissions to the local authority until the 25th of June.

'Tractor & trailer send-off ' for wonderful PJ Reidy

A RACONTEUR and storyteller who circumnavigated the world twice over, Newmarket-on-Fergus native PJ Reidy had a send-off like no other when he was laid to rest last week.

It was “a tractor and trailer send-off ” as his son John described it from the altar of Carrygerry Church on Friday morning with his coffin strapped into a trailer attached to a Massey Ferguson 165 as he made his final journey to Kilconry Cemetery.

Journeys were incredibly important to PJ who first went abroad in 1956 at the age of nineteen. Every June, he would travel across the globe for three weeks and during the course of his life, the eighty nine year old managed to circumnavigate the world twice, thanks to his annual expeditions.

In total, he managed to visit an estimated twenty five countries, the details of which he wrote on lime in his barn at home in Treannahow. Along the way, he competed in a cycle in New York City in 2005, comforted a Barcelona team with a pep talk at an airport in Italy, listened to and told an awful lot of stories.

Speaking at PJ’s funeral mass, Fr Albert McDonnell stated, “he travelled a great deal, not just within Ireland or Europe but far beyond”. Such locations included New York, Montserrat, Bermuda, Greece, Hong Kong and the Iron Curtain.

Aer Lingus was a natural fit for PJ’s employment and it comes as no great surprise that he held a strong interest in aviation. Through his farming, he remained connected to the land but was never driven to have the biggest herd and he was compared as a cross between Johnny Appleseed and Finn MacCumhaill.

of history, PJ was a genealogist without the qualifications and could distinguish between different people of the same name in localities. He led historical walks and talks in Newmarket-on-Fergus but was active with groups across the region and highly regarded by them.

Born on January 20th 1987, PJ died peacefully at University Hospital Limerick on May 25th 2026, ironically days short of when his annual June expeditions would have traditionally begun. His father Pat was a member of the East Clare IRA Brigade and his mother Anne was a member of Cumann na mBan. His beloved wife Nora died in June 2022.

His three O’Grady granduncles were members of the first local football team The Dalgais who represented Clare in the All-Ireland

Championship in the late 1880s.

His son Martin spoke of his father’s stories from travelling the world every June “so he could get the hay done in August”. He said his father had polished the art of storytelling.

“Even in the last twelve months at eighty nine and a quarter we got up on a hot air balloon in Trim, Co Meath, we left at 4am to be at the petrol station for 06:30, it was the fourth time that summer we tried to get it done, we got a lot in”.

Local historian Máire Ní Ghruagáin who was co-author of ‘The Story of Newmarket-on-Fergus’ alongside the late Canon Reuben Butler can recall first listening to PJ’s stories “a long time ago”.

PJ’s deeds are worthy of publication in a book, Máire maintained. She remembered

him as someone “with great humanity and an ability to provide an original solution for anyone who made his way to his workspace. S Martin O’Grady, a former colleague of PJ’s recalled how when his swath turner broke down with pins missing and deemed irreplaceable in Ireland, PJ travelled to the manufacturer in between flights and to the delight of management, he left with bags of many parts, and the missing pins which he loaded in his waiting plane.

Alongside Máire, Labhrás Ó Donnghaile, John O’Dea and Marion O’Leary, PJ completed a diploma course in local studies from the UCC. He did his thesis on emigration from twenty one townlands within Newmarket-on-Fergus.

Tim Crowe of the Sixmilebridge Historical Society said PJ “was a great historian and great company. Great local knowledge passes with PJ”.

Researcher, Luke McInerney said PJ was “a very well-liked gentleman whose devotion to the locale was impressive. His head was full of seanchas and scéalta. The likes of him will hardly be seen again”.

PJ is survived by his his sons Martin and John, grandson Marcus, nephews-in-law, cousins, extended family and friends.

Restrictions on Main Street but extra parking planned in Miltown Malbay for Willie Clancy week

PARKING restrictions are set to be introduced on the main street of Miltown Malbay for Willie Clancy week and casual trading licences will be issued in the coming weeks.

Arrangements for this year’s Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy were discussed at a meeting between An Garda Síochána, the festival organising committee and staff from the West Clare Municipal District office which took place in April.

Operational measures are to be finalised but acting senior engineer with the West Clare MD, Paddy Tiernan confirmed that “suitable locations for additional parking and the provision of portable toilets” had been identified by the organising committee.

Tiernan advised that “casual trading licences are expected to issue in the coming weeks and will include specific conditions relating to designated locations and operational requirements”.

"Continued growth of the festival has led to the need to develop traffic calming measures", he explained. They include the likely introduction of parking restrictions along Main Street. Stewarding and policing arrangements are also being coordinated in conjunction with the Gardaí.

He added, “Increased refuse collection and cleaning arrangements will be put in place to support the event, ensuring the town is maintained to a high standard throughout the festival period”.

Cathaoirleach of the West Clare MD, Cllr Bill Slattery (FG) said elected members had not received an update since a public meeting on January 28th in the community centre. He questioned what the envisaged traffic calming measures were likely to be.

Drawings have been designed, Tiernan confirmed with parking to be prohibited on the main street.

“Willie Clancy school has formed a committee with business owners to try put smacht on the event, we met them four weeks ago with An Garda Síochána, drawings have been done up for toilets, parking, how we manage the street itself and casual trading too.

In terms of Miltown Malbay’s main street, the intention is to put barriers on the street to protect public, musicians, those attending events, it will mean no parking on the street for the event, it is a safety issue”.

Barriers have to be organised but alternative parking will result in “extra parking this year,” the engineer advised. “We are organising additional public toilets and are also dealing with casual trading issue. There is a lot of work going

on in the background, we have a very good handle on what needs to be done to have more smacht.. Everything is moving in the right direction and we will have a positive outcome”.

Noting that the festival is around the corner, Cllr Shane Talty (FF) commented, “July 1st is not far away, it will be on us quickly”. He continued, “There’s not an unanimity on the causal trading impact on where that does or does not go, impact of lost parking for residents during the week is important. It was well documented with the picture painted last year on the provision of toilets”.

One “significant” pub closure will

also impact on the flow of people in Miltown Malbay, Cllr Talty flagged.

“It was a bar with large capacity and an old traditional dance lounge, it was catering for huge crowd during the week of Willie Clancy which will add pressures”.

Water supply “is one less thing to worry about with Coore water scheme relaid,” observed Cllr Michael Shannon (FF). “Hopefully we will have no breaks, it is great that it is live now”.

Whiskey will be drank neat at Willie Clancy week this year, quipped Cllr Joe Killeen (FF). “I hope for the best and expect the worse, we went to Miltown Malbay to meet committee members, there

are further changes to be made but change comes slowly”.

There has been a “proactive approach” from the MD office on the matter, Cllr Joe Garrihy (FG) maintained. “The tourism season is short so we need the footfall. It is a learning process but it is a learning process to build on success so it needs to be carefully managed”.

Clarification was sought by Cllr Dinny Gould (IND) that a one-way system would not be implemented.

He was also advised that the barriers that will be placed along main street are those visible in Ennis for the St Patrick’s Day parade and they will stretch the full length of the street.

This prompted Cllr Gould to caution that the fences will be moved at night. “They jump the fences when they come out drunk, I see them at the Rose of Tralee, they will move them around”.

Square blocks of concrete had been agreed at the January public meeting, Cllr Slattery recalled.

“That was discussed but it is a logistical nightmare, we would need ten truckloads of them, we would need fork lifts and we’re conscious of casual traders,” Tiernan replied.

“We did consider that they could be thrown around, we do intend to reinforce them, we have a system in place, we can’t guarantee that someone won’t come out from a pub and throw them around”.

Controversial plans to pipe water from Clare to Dublin moves to next stage

IRELAND’s largest water project which will pipe water from East Clare to Dublin has advanced to the next stage of its development.

Although there has been plenty of opposition to the Water Supply Project Eastern and Midlands Region, it has proceeded to the next stage under the Government’s Infrastructure Guidelines.

Following the lodging of a planning application in December, a detailed business case for the project has now been approved by the Uisce Éireann board and in turn now noted by Government.

This paves the way for the procurement and tendering process to progress in order to accelerate the delivery phase for the project.

Under the plans, water will be drained from Co Clare to supply Dublin and surrounding counties of Meath, Kildare and Wicklow.

The infrastructure also intends to build capacity for future offtakes to serve communities in Tipperary, Offaly and Westmeath.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, said, “The Water Supply Project is a vital piece of infra-

structure to unlock housing and facilitate growth in the Eastern and Midlands Region.

Its delivery is critical to help us achieve the aims of Delivering Homes, Building Communities, our housing action plan. The project, along with Uisce Éireann’s other major infrastructure project, the Greater Dublin Drainage project, reflects significant Government investment in water infrastructure to support housing and development”.

Maria O’Dwyer, Uisce Éireann’s Infrastructure Delivery Director welcomed its approval through the next stage of the Infrastructure Guidelines.

“This project is backed by the Government’s continued funding commitment, and we are committed to playing our part in the delivery of vital strategic infrastructure to support housing delivery.

This project is achieving milestones at pace and we are taking all possible measures to accelerate delivery as it navigates through the statutory planning process.

We will be progressing with the procurement of contractors and other project delivery partners over the coming months, so that, subject to the planning approval, works can be mobilised as quickly and ef-

Subject to a successful planning application, Uisce Éireann proposes to start construction in 2028, with completion within five years.

Based on a cost estimate of between €4.58 billion and €5.96 billion. During construction, the project will employ more than 1,000 people directly.

Water will be abstracted from the Parteen Basin, upstream of Parteen

Weir on the Lower River Shannon.

According to the planning documents, a maximum of 2% of the long-term average flow at Parteen Basin will be utilised in the abstraction.

It is proposed that the water will be treated near Killaloe and Birdhill, treated water will then be piped 170km through counties Tipperary, Offaly and Kildare to a termination point reservoir at Peamount in

County Dublin, connecting into the Greater Dublin Area water distribution network. At present, the River Liffey supplies 85% of the water requirements for 1.7 million people in Dublin, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow.

East Clare councillors in February tabled a joint motion calling on the Council’s planning department to assist them in a submission to An Coimisiún Pleanála.

“This project has the potential to wipe out the serious investment we’re bringing to the county,” cautioned Cllr Tony O’Brien (FF) while Cllr Tommy Guilfoyle (SF) commented, “I oppose the project, the Shannon needs to be left alone, they have everything else inside the Pale, they don’t need the Shannon”.

'More chance of bullock Carrigaholt robbery accused secures bail after DPP plea jibe getting a holiday...'

ONE of the four Co Clare men accused of the robbery of Carrigaholt Post Office in west Clare has secured bail after spending a number of months on remand in prison.

At Ennis District Court, solicitor, John Casey for Darragh Pender (30) said that his client has obtained bail after being on remand in prison since January 23rd of this year.

Mr Pender’s three co-accused, Michael McMahon, Darren Cassidy and Martin Downes, who has consent to bail but has not been able to take it up, all remain on remand in prison.

In court, Mr Casey hit out at the DPP’s refusal to allow Mr Pender go forward on a signed guilty plea to the circuit court.

Mr Casey said: “I have never come across a position before where a signed guilty plea has been offered and has been rejected.”

He said: “My unders-

He said: “As solicitors, we practice in the district court day in day out doing things properly. I have never come across this before.”

Mr Casey said that he has said in court that his client, Mr Pender can go forward on a signed plea of guilt and that has been captured by the DAR (Digital Audio Recording) in the court.

Mr Casey said that he has now been asked to formally put it in writing and will be transmitted

that to the DPP in Dublin.

Mr Casey described the DPP’s approach to the case as “disingenuous”.

Martin Downes appeared in court via video-link from prison and solicitor Tara Godfrey said that a Book of Evidence will be required to be prepared by the State in the case of Mr Downes.

In the case, all four, Mr Pender (30) of Dun na hInse, Ennis at the time of charge along with Michael McMahon (38) of Plunkett Drive, Kilkishen, Darren Cassidy

(38) of Lifford Mews, Lifford, Ennis and Martin Downes (36) of Seafield Park, Quilty are each charged with robbing Maura McKiernan, the post-mistress at An Post Carrigaholt, The Square, Carrigaholt of cash, coins and a cheque to the value of €8,944.63, contrary to Section 14 of the Criminal justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001 on January 21st.

At a contested bail hearing in January, Sgt Shane Graham told the court that it is the Garda belief that the four men before the court charged with robbery were part of a four person joint enterprise "who acted in concert and colluded in order to carry out a cold and calculated robbery”.

Opposing bail for the four, Sgt Graham said that it will be alleged that the four member strong gang “involved two getaway drivers and two members of the gang that entered the premises where the post mistress was violently and viciously assaulted with iron bars by both males”.

"A BULLOCK is closer to a holiday than Broadford is to getting a sewerage scheme", a county councillor has remarked.

Both Broadford and Cooraclare in December 2023 were included in a pilot €50m wastewater treatment scheme which has made little progress over the last two and a half years.

An additional €700,000 in funding for Broadford’s inclusion in the scheme was announced last November bringing the total set aside for the East Clare’s village to €8m.

Yet the arrival of shovels on the grounds is estimated to be five to six years away.

Such a sentiment has been felt in Broadford with patient locals now keen to see roads repaired instead of waiting for the digging to begin.

Senior executive engineer, Declan Flanagan acknowledged the road would have to be repaired, “While

a delivery timeline for this project has not yet been confirmed".

Cllr O’Callaghan had previously requested an surfacing upgrade on the main street in May 2023. “I thought we’d look red faced if we went resurfacing the roads in Broadford before the sewerage scheme but we’re no closer to getting a sewerage scheme for Broadford than a bullock is to getting a holiday”.

Seconding the proposal, Cllr Tony O’Brien (FF) stated, “We are where we are with sewerage scheme, it is part of Municipal District plan to drive it on over the

next five years”.

Broadford is “challenging” according to Cllr Pat Hayes (FF).

“Neglected is how you’d describe it".

Director of Service for Tourism, Recreation, Libraries and Cultural Services, Siobhán McNulty explained, “cumbersome and timely” gateways must be passed for such large-scale water projects that involve environmental screening and consultants. “I can assure you Clare County Council is at the door and pushing to be through the gate, it is the nature of the beast that they do take time”.

Totally 'tropical' twist!

WESTBURY would be the perfect setting for a tropical film due to the prevalence of giant invasive plants, a South Clare councillor has remarked.

Threats posed by the extent of hogweed in Westbury was flagged by Cllr James Ryan (SF) at this week’s sitting of the Shannon Municipal District.

He highlighted that the river in the locality now has “a massive amount of hogweed and this poses a threat to all areas nearby”.

He requested that the Shannon MD liaise with the National Parks and Wildlife Service “to get more funding to tackle this invasive species”.

Acting senior executive engineer in the Shannon MD, Caimin Dillon stated, “a programme of treatment has been carried out over the last number of years funded from own resources. Treatment will continue this year and the Westbury area will be included”.

Seconding the proposal, Cllr Michael Begley (IND) asked the MD office to consult with the Clare Local Development Company over the possibility of securing funding, “maybe a combined effort might

help to improve the funding available”.

'Remarkable' wine cooler owned by Clare's first policeman up for auction

A MAGNIFICENT Irish silver wine cooler, presented to Major George Warburton in 1826 by the Constabulary offices of Connaught, is coming to auction at Bonhams in London next month.

The piece, crafted by Dublin silversmith Edward Power, documents a pivotal moment in Irish policing history.

Warburton was appointed chief magistrate in 1816 to command fifty constables across the Moyarta, Ibrickan, and Clonderlaw baronies following agrarian unrest.

By 1820 he oversaw policing across all of County Clare, a role that established him as one of Robert Peel's most trusted officers in Ireland.

He later rose to Inspector General of Police for the entire country.

"This wine cooler is a remarkable artifact of Irish history," said Kieran O'Boyle, Head of Ireland at Bonhams, and a County Clare resident.

"It tells the story of the man who shaped modern policing in Clare.

Ennis-born artist Mick O’Dea has enjoyed a distinguished career span-

ning decades in Ireland and abroad. A former President of the Royal Hibernian Academy and member of Aosdána, he has received numerous awards and honours in recognition of his contribution to the arts, education and public life.

In 2025, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy Honoris Causa by Dublin City University. Earlier this year, he served as Grand Marshal of the Ennis St Patrick’s Day Parade.

The reception also recognised the outstanding community spirit shown

by Liz and Rony Barobhuiya through their annual Christmas Day Meals initiative.

What began with a request to help one elderly woman spending Christmas Day alone has grown into a major community effort providing more than 140 hot meals each year to elderly people, people experiencing homelessness and emergency service workers across the county.

Mayor Howard said the recipients represented the best of County Clare. “It was a great privilege to honour these exceptional individuals.

“Each of the recipients has made a lasting contribution in their own way and it was wonderful to acknowledge their achievements through this Mayoral Reception.”

Relocated Shannon post office opens in town centre

SHANNON’s post office has relocated to a new setting within the town centre.

Now situated between Alexandra Dental and Dunnes Stores opposite Insomnia Café, the post office is in a smaller but more cost effective setting which will preserve the future of the service within the town.

Deirdre Barry serves as the postmaster for the relocated post office which officially opened on Tuesday morning with huge queues gathered in the shopping centre for its 11am reopening.

Clare TD, Donna McGettigan (SF) was among those to visit the new post office. She told The Clare Echo of the importance for the town in maintaining the service. “This is the hub of the town, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable, sometimes it is the only place they go on a day out. It is very important for the people of Shannon and the staff to have the facility kept here”.

While it is often said the post office can serve as a focal point in rural settings in the country, Deputy McGettigan stated

that the same applies in urban locations such as Shannon. “This is the main place where people come in Shannon, if it didn’t have the post office it would mean people would have to go outside the town to get their facilities which would mean they wouldn’t end up shopping here, they wouldn’t stay for a cup of coffee, have a chat or meet friends and socialise”.

According to Shannon’s first TD the social aspect of post offices cannot be taken for granted. It follows Clarecastle and Carrigaholt reopening post offices in recent weeks.

“This isn’t just about buying and selling stamps or getting letters posted, for some people it is their day out, it is the day when they meet their friends, the day they socialise and feel like they have something to do on a daily basis”.

Her constituency office is also located within the town centre so Donna believed maintaining the footfall from the post office in the shopping centre would help economic activity in Shannon.

“Anything that keeps open within the town centre and keeps the footfall going here and the whole social aspect of the town here, it is well needed ."

Ennis RFC launches major fundraising drive to complete landmark redevelopment

ENNIS Rugby Football Club has officially launched an ambitious fundraising campaign following the granting of planning per‑ mission for a transforma‑ tional €2.5 million redevel‑ opment of its facilities at Drumbiggle, Ennis.

The project represents the largest single investment in the club’s history and will deliver a modern clubhouse, pitch and match lighting upgrades, enhanced gym and training facilities, improved community spaces, upgraded player amenities, expanded parking and significant site improvements designed to serve members and the wider community.

The club has successfully secured €2 million in grant funding, leaving a balance of

approximately €500,000 to be raised locally to bring the project to completion.

Ennis RFC Chairperson Richard Murphy described the development as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the club.

“This is a hugely exciting milestone for Ennis RFC. Securing planning permission and €2 million in grant funding demonstrates the confidence that exists in our vision for the future.

ENNIS father-of-three Seamus Cotter helped launch the Marie Keating Founda‑ tion's Gold Medal-winning show garden at Bord Bia Bloom in Dublin's Phoenix Park last week as he marks a remarkable mile‑ stone - 10 years since being diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and told he had around 18 months to live.

The Empowering at Every Step garden, sponsored by AstraZeneca and Gilead Sciences Ireland and designed by Robert Moore, highlights cancer prevention, screening, early detection, treatment and survivorship.

Through a series of immersive spaces, the garden encourages visitors to prioritise their

health while sharing the stories of people affected by cancer across Ireland.

For Seamus, the garden's message is deeply personal. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in 2016 after a series of unexplained blood clots and swollen glands led to further investigations.

"The diagnosis came completely out of the blue. When I asked about the prognosis, I was told it was usually around 18 months. At that point, your whole world changes.”

Following his diagnosis, Seamus was accepted onto a pioneering immunotherapy clinical trial. Despite experiencing serious complications during treatment, including meningitis and Addison's Disease, he responded exceptionally well.

By April 2017, scans showed there was no longer any measurable disease detected.

Today, almost a decade later, Seamus is cancer-free, enjoys an active lifestyle and continues to advocate for lung cancer patients across Ireland.

"Ten years ago I never imagined I would be here at Bloom today. Advances in treatment, clinical trials and the care I received have given me more time with my family and opportunities I never thought I'd have."

Marie Keating Foundation CEO Liz Yeates said the garden is designed to empower people with practical information and encourage them to take positive steps for their health.

Scott Medal award for bravery posthumously presented to Doolin Sergeant

103 YEARS on from his death, Doolin born Garda Sergeant James Woods was presented with the Scott Medal for Bravery.

Last Friday, the exceptional courage and bravery of James Woods was finally recognised when the Gold Scott Medal was awarded posthumously to him. It is the highest award for bravery which can be bestowed by An Garda Síochána to a member of the service.

On December 3rd 1923, Sergeant James Woods and Garda Patrick Spillane were on duty in Scartaglin Garda Station, Co. Kerry.

The Garda Station itself was the property of Jerimiah Lyons and his family who remained living in the house alongside the Gardaí.

On that night at around 8.30pm, the Garda Station was attacked by a group of

six armed and masked men believed to be local anti-treaty volunteers.

Sergeant Woods and Garda Spillane were both on station duty and unarmed.

Garda Spillane was ordered to hand over his uniform.

Whilst Garda Spillane was being held at gunpoint the raiders began searching for other Garda members.

The masked men went throughout the house, ransacking various rooms. On hearing the commotion Sergeant Woods entered the kitchen area where he was ordered to hand over all of his property, including his uniform.

Sergeant Woods refused to hand over his uniform.

He was forced at gunpoint to the second storey of the house where he was fatally wounded.

way. He went to De La Salle College in Waterford to study to become a primary school teacher but subsequently left his post to fight in the War of Independence.

Following the War, James joined An Garda Síochána.

As a fluent Irish speaker, he was teaching Gaeilge to the new recruits in The Curragh before he was relocated to

Kerry in 1923.

He was a well-respected Garda that was considered to have a lot of potential to climb up through the ranks.

Two of his brothers, Michael and Thomas joined the Gardaí at the same time as James with Thomas appointed Deputy Commissioner in 1955.

James’ nephew Con Woods

has been researching the story for the past three to four years which played a central role in An Garda Síochána recognising the bravery shown in Scartaglin when the Sergeant placed himself in harm’s way.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Con said, “as a story it was largely forgotten about and had slipped under the radar”. Once his research and findings were put to Garda authorities, they decided to honour James with the Scott Medal.

“It is a very significant moment for the family, we are thrilled that James has finally been recognised for his bravery”.

A former teacher at St Flannan’s College, Con recalled that a major breakthrough in his research was coming across a 240 page file in the National Archive Office.

He had also studied the Garda archive and local clip-

pings along with travelling to Kerry to interview locals in Scartaglin.

“It happened in 1923 and it was troubled times back then, the State was just set up and his story had fallen through the cracks after The Civil War”.

Newmarket-on-Fergus native Con added, “We were aware of the story growing up, my father spoke about it but it was not discussed hugely.

My father was eighteen at the time, he went to Kerry with his mother and Thomas to bring James’ body back to be buried in Doolin”.

Carrigoran residents get into gear this summer with their shiny new bus

RESIDENTS of Carrigoran House are motoring with a brand-new bus launched on Tuesday last.

Shannon based Ei Electronics were among the main contributors with a fundraiser ongoing for two years to equip the nursing home and day care centre with a brand new 261 bus.

There was great excitement in Newmarket-on-Fergus last Tuesday with celebrations for the new vehicle which will be utilised to bring residents on various trips.

Located in Newmarket-on-Fergus, Carrigoran House was founded in 1974 by the Sisters of

Charity of the Incarnate Word and operated as a ‘not for profit’ charitable foundation.

Uniquely designed and purpose built to cater for the elderly, Carrigoran House prides itself on its long track record in setting new standards in care and retirement and offering and maintaining the highest standards and comfort to our guests.

Shannon Athletics to get new 400m running track

SHANNON Athletic Club have been granted planning permission to construct a new 400m running track at Tullyvarraga in the town, following a long running development saga.

The club have also been granted permission for ancillary track facilities, changing rooms, an enlarged parking area and floodlighting by the local authority.

The planning department expressed concerns over potential environmental impacts due to its proximity to the Lower River Shannon area of Special Conservation and River Shannon and River Fergus Estuaries Special Protection Areas.

Clare County Council also expressed concerns over the potentially polluting materials such as diesel used during construction of the car park and the risk of runoff into the SAC. The planning department also found issues with the proposed site layout plan, requiring that several alterations be made in order for the project to be approved.

Shannon AC managed to overcome these setbacks and can now begin work on the sizable development for Clare’s second largest town. In their subsequent application, the club included a Screening for Appropriate Assessment Report that found the development would have “no significant” environmental or hydrological effects on the sur-

Ex-Garda jailed for masturbating in front of three women in Gort

A JUDGE has jailed an ex-Garda and sex offender for four months for masturbating in clear view of three women in the south Galway town of Gort last June.

At Gort District Court today, Judge Adrian Harris said that Francis Hannon (69) of Poolboy Cottages, Ballinasloe, Co Galway had engaged in “disgusting, deplorable and awful behaviour” when fully naked and masturbating in clear view of the women on June 15th 2025 from an address in Gort.

Judge Harris said that “an aggravating factor

here is that Mr Hannon is a former Garda”.

Judge Harris said that having read the complainant’s victim impact statement “I can see how upsetting it must have been and what an awful experience it was for her”.

Mr Hannon pleaded guilty to exposing his genitals intending to cause fear, distress or alarm to a woman on June 15th at an address in Gort contrary to Section 45(1) of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2017.

In court, Sgt Claire Henaghan said that Mr Hannon has 44 previous convictions that include one for sexual assault in the circuit court under Section 2 of the

Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act in 1997 and another prior conviction for harassment.

Sgt Henaghan said that Mr Hannon is currently in custody for the same offence to what is before Gort court and is facing a similar case in another court in Galway.

Outlining the case,

Sgt Henaghan said that on 2pm on June 15th last, the injured party from her home in Gort observed a man fully naked in his upstairs bedroom of accommodation for the homeless at a neighbouring property and he was masturbating, fully naked and was aware that there were people observing him.

Solicitor for Mr Hannon, Ann Gillane said that Mr Hannon can’t explain his actions on the day. Ms Gillane said that Mr Hannon was depressed at the time following his divorce Ms Gillane said that Mr Hannon apologises to the injured party.

In the woman’s victim impact statement, the woman said “since this incident I have felt extremely vulnerable and unsafe in my own home and community.

She said: “As a single woman living alone, I now experience anxiety even when looking out my window or going into my own garden.

What should feel like a place of safety no longer does."

She said that as a former Garda, Hannon “fully understands the difference between right and wrong. He knew that exposing himself to three women was completely unacceptable and deeply distressing behaviour”.

Speaking outside the courthouse after the case today, the complainant in the case said that she was ‘sickened’ by the four month prison term imposed.

She said that she was “disappointed” with the sentence imposed considering Mr Hannon’s 44 previous convictions.

Recalling the man’s indecent exposure on June 15th, the woman outside court said: “For 45 minutes he was doing it.

He knew that we were watching him and he knew that we were filming him. We had video evidence. We were all traumatised by what we saw.”

The woman said that she did not know or had not seen Mr Hannon before June 15th 2025.

The woman said that she only found out a few days after the incident that Mr Hannon is an ex-Garda.

Another eye-witness to the indecent exposure and neighbour of the complainant speaking outside court after the case said: “The incident was horrific and prolonged and he knew that we were watching.”

TRIPTYCH artists Gabrielle Murphy, Janet Buell, and John Kennedy have announced a new eleven day exhibition.

The trio are artists who work in a variety of mediums — textiles, pastels, sculpture, painting, collage and more.

Texture, colour, and movement are themes for this show.

The artists' 2024 exhibition in Kinvara highlights the popularity of public engagement in art-making.

It set a record for the Old Courthouse Gallery, attracting 1000 visitors over its tenday run.

This June, gallery-goers can try punch-needle embroidery, needle-felting, print-making, and construction of fun cardboard sculptures.

Belinda Deutinger will launch the exhibition on Friday, 12 June at 7 pm.

Belinda is a visual artist based in Kinvara.

She has exhibited widely in solo and group shows across the Island of Ireland. She got her B.A. in Art and Design in 2009.

Triptych, the artists’ eponymous exhibition, runs from 12 June til 22 June at the Old Courthouse Gallery in Kinvara.

The public gallery is run by Kinvara Area Visual Artists (KAVA), an artist-led cooperative that recently celebrated its ten year anniversary.

dents doing their Leaving Cert and Junior Cert in the coming days. Every year in Ireland it happens like clockwork. The rain disappears, the evenings stretch and warm sunshine pours across the country. And somewhere, somebody always smiles and says: “You can tell it’s exam time because the sun is shining!”

And isn’t it true? While beaches fill, barbecues light, and the smell of freshly cut grass drifts through the evening air, thousands of young people across Ireland sit quietly at kitchen tables, in bedrooms, libraries, and exam halls carrying something much heavier than school bags.

They carry hopes. Dreams.

Pressure. Fear. Expectations. And sometimes silent tears. The month of June has arrived and with it comes a season every Irish family understands well, exam season. The Junior Cert. The Leaving Cert. College exams.

There are candles being lit quietly in churches by worried mothers, fathers, grandparents, neighbours, teachers, and friends. There are

whispered prayers rising gently to Heaven for young people carrying burdens far too heavy for shoulders so young. Because behind every exam number is a person. A son. A daughter. A grandchild. A friend. A precious life deeply loved by God. THE FEAR WE NEVER FORGET Most adults still remember that feeling vividly. “Put your revision notes away. It’s time to begin.” Suddenly your stomach tightens. Your heart pounds loudly in your chest.

Your mouth goes dry.

Then the exam paper lands softly on the desk. And your mind goes blank. Sound familiar? Those memories never fully leave us. At this very moment there are thousands of young people, God bless them, preparing to sit exams they have worked toward for years.

Many have sacrificed sleep, confidence, peace of mind, hobbies, social lives, and endless hours simply to arrive at this moment. And while exams are important, perhaps the most important message any young person needs to hear right now is this, "You Are More Than a Grade."

An exam can measure memory. It can evaluate performance on one particular day. But it can never measure kindness. Compassion.

Faith. Courage. Integrity. Generosity. Resilience. Love. Or the beauty of your soul.

You are more than a grade. You

are a child of God. As Scripture reminds us, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." (Psalms 139:14.).

And again, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine." (Book of Isaiah 43:1.). Your value was never dependent upon exam results.

Not now. Not ever.

GIVING YOUR BEST IS A SACRED THING Giving your best in school examinations is not simply about proving intelligence or collecting points. It can also become something deeply spiritual. When you study with honesty, perseverance and hope, you are honouring the gifts and talents entrusted to you

by God. The moments of confusion before clarity arrives. The tiredness.

The perseverance. The courage to keep going. All of these things shape not just educated students, but stronger human beings. And maybe one of the greatest lessons exams teach us is not information at all, but resilience.

REST IS HOLY TOO In a world obsessed with productivity, perhaps students most need permission to rest. Sleep is not laziness. Rest is not weakness. Taking a walk is not failure. Even Jesus rested.

YOU NEVER WALK ALONE One of the saddest lies exam stress tells young people is this, “You are alone.” But you are not alone. Your family is walking beside you. Your teachers are supporting you. Your friends are cheering for you. Your community is praying for you.

And God walks with you through every anxious moment. As Scripture says, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (Peter 5:7). And again, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9) BELIEVE IN YOURSELF So when a new day begins, dare to smile gratefully. When there is darkness, dare to shine a light.

When someone else is struggling,

dare to help them heal.

When fear whispers that you are not enough, dare to believe otherwise. When you fail, rise again.

And when the day finally ends, dare to believe that your best was enough. Because it is.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK As your thought for the week, let us become people of encouragement, especially around this time of exams for our young people.

Light a candle for a student. Offer kindness instead of criticism.

And if you are sitting exams yourself, Pause. Breathe deeply. Step into the sunshine for a moment. Say a little prayer. Trust the work you have done. Believe in yourself.

Because no matter what happens over the coming weeks, your life has meaning and value far beyond any exam paper. As the prophet Jeremiah reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11).

May God bless every student with peace in their hearts, clarity in their minds, strength in difficult moments, and hope for the future.

And may every young person know this truth deep within their soul, You are loved. You are enough. And you are so much more than a grade. Amen.

€649,000 awarded to more than 30 Clare community groups under Community Climate Action Programme

A TOTAL of €649,000 has been awarded to 36 community-based organisations across County Clare under Phase 2 of the Community Climate Action Programme, supporting locally led projects that respond directly to the challenges of climate change.

Clare County Council, in partnership with the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, is supporting the delivery of these initiatives as part of a national programme designed to empower communities to work with their local authority in shaping low-carbon, sustainable places and contributing to national climate and energy targets.

The funding has been allocated under Strand 1, Phase 2 of the programme, Building Low Carbon Communities.

The successful Clare projects will be delivered over the next 16 months and will address one or more of the programme’s five themes, including community energy, food and waste, travel, shopping and recycling, and local climate and environmental action.

The announcement was highlighted at Ennis Men’s Shed, one of 23 Clare projects supported during Phase 1 of this programme. That Men’s Shed project included the installation of a solar photovoltaic system, a polytunnel, rainwater harvesting infrastructure and pollinator planting, thereby demonstrating

Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr Paul Murphy, said, “Communities across

ing climate and environmental initiatives locally.”

In what is his second Cup final in four seasons as manager, there are noticeable differences between preparing Avenue and Lifford for battle. “When I was Lifford manager I was on the flipside, we were against Avenue and we would have been massive underdogs. I would consider us to have been close enough to Avenue and we won the league cup that season but one thing led to another and we played within ourselves in the final, the occasion got to us. On the flipside then with a club like Avenue you are expected to be in finals on a regular basis at all age groups, the big difference is there is an expectation that you are there”.

However, the bricklaying contractor notes, “I wouldn’t feel the pressure, it comes hand and hand with it. I embrace it, I move through it and en-

joy it, I work better under pressure than coasting and having it easy which is probably from my own work and career, I thrive on pressure really”.

Exactly a year ago this week, Walla was appointed Avenue Utd manager, having served as coach during David Russell’s final season in charge.

Had it been put to him when in opposing camps to Russell, he would certainly have looked crooked at anyone who suggested they would work together in the future.

“I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, stars aligned, we ended up having a conversation over a cup of coffee which could have lasted 30 seconds and the conversation ended up lasting a couple of hours, we moved forward and here I am talking to you”.

On top of work and family life, he is also manager of the Treaty Utd U20s. "We do morning sessions so we’re on at 7am Monday, Tuesday and Thursday so I double down on the sessions on

Tuesday and Thursday with Avenue. It is a grind but it is good and it is a high level of coaching."

Reflecting on his first season as manager, Walla admitted it was " bitterly disappointing". Before the start of the season, he had intended to blood new players but he could never have foreseen the injuries that have fell their way. Last season’s squad is also without Steven McGann, Mark Roche, Jack Dunleavy, Dylan Barry and Philip Talty. “It is probably the nucleus of your team for the past five years and that’s not an excuse, it is about trying to find different ways within the club and sign a few lads so we signed a few lads from Galway, Conor Finnucane, Jack Joyce, Ryan Mahony came at the start of the season before he went hurling. We’ve been trying to bleed some young lads in but sometimes the younger lads are not ready at the same time to make the step up”.

There’s nothing better for Avenue to whet the

appetite than the chance of taking down Newmarket Celtic in a Cup final.

“It is Avenue versus Newmarket, it is the biggest game in the county and I said we’re looking forward to it and the spectacle, we’re looking forward to the day and we’ll enjoy it and training during the week, you never know what is going to happen in a final but the boys will be ready”.

Beating Sporting Ennistymon 8-1 in Saturday’s final sees them enter the final as the fresher of the two sides but Walla admitted, “I prefer the competitive games to get the intensity levels up, I think the two squads are probably even enough and both have a similar amount of injuries. Newmarket are more experienced in terms of being on a long road together whereas our more senior players have been out injured, they’ve been here but they haven’t been out on the pitch altogether at the same time”.

Mullen & O'Malley to miss out for Avenue in Clare Cup final

AVENUE UTD captain Conor Mullen is ruled out with injury for Saturday’s Ennis Carpets Clare Cup final as is Paddy O’Malley.

A two-time Oscar Traynor winner with Clare, Mullen will miss out on Avenue’s attempts to win a 14th Clare Cup title. Left winger Paddy O’Malley who returned to the club this season is also ruled out with injury as they strive to finish the season on a high.

Ennis native O’Malley who won a Munster Junior Cup with Pike Rovers in 2018 sustained a serious hamstring injury in Avenue’s second last game of the Premier Division at the beginning of May when their 1-1 draw with Bridge Utd ended the chances of the Sixmilebridge side winning the league and gifted the Premier Division to Newmarket.

Paddy was back in the Avenue ranks earlier this year having returned from Australia and lined out with both the club’s A and B team from the end of March. His precision deliveries made him a valuable addition but his progress was stalled by the hamstring tear which forced the thirty year old to be carried off the field in Sixmilebridge.

Mullen has been sidelined for longer. He sustained the knee injury in Avenue’s 2-1 extra time win over Tulla Utd in the quarter-finals of the Ennis Carpets Clare Cup at the end of April. The captain is one of the vocal leaders of the Avenue side and the presence of the thirty three year old will be greatly missed from the heart of their defence.

Right back Gary O’Connell is also ruled out with injury while there are doubts over the fitness of Dylan Casey and Ryan Corcoran.

Elias Kunz has left the Avenue Utd squad and won’t be available for selection, the striker picked up an injury in his only outing for the club this season and his loss has weakened their attacking options.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Avenue Utd manager, Adrian Walsh remarked, “We’re the walking wounded and I suppose Newmarket are too as it is the end of the season. We have Conor Mullen out, Paddy O’Malley both out for the season, massive losses. Other than that we have a few niggles but we should be fairly okay, we came through fairly unscathed from the semi-final, a couple of dead legs and muscle injuries but we should be okay”.

'Biggest rivalry in Clare sport'

EOGHAN Thynne will captain Avenue Utd as they bid to win a fourth Clare Cup in five seasons, standing in their path are reigning champions Newmarket Celtic with the midfielder describing it “as the biggest rivalry in Clare in any sport”.

Injury to the experienced Conor Mullen has resulted in the captain’s armband heading in Eoghan’s direction.

Since making the breakthrough with Avenue Utd in 2022, he has never gone a season without winning either the Premier Division or Clare Cup and he is resolute that 2026 won’t be the year that changes.

“It is about trophies and it is about winning...it also gives you a bounce into next year, it was the same last year when we recovered to win the league”.

On the flip side, losing out to Newmarket Celtic would certainly serve as a setback, Thynne acknowledged. “If Newmarket did the double it would definitely hurt us, it would be a really big blow because this particular team with the likes of myself, Conor Hehir, Cullen (McCabe) since we came up

into this team we’ve become used to winning and you have to earn it too, you don’t get anything easy in the Clare league, especially against Newmarket”.

Part of the Avenue Utd B side which lost the 2020 Cup final to Newmarket Celtic, Eoghan will line out in his fifth Cup final this weekend. “Hopefully it will be my fourth Cup medal for the trophy cabinet”.

Prior to the 2022 season under David Russell, Avenue Utd had gone 11 years without winning a trophy. Adrian Walsh in his first campaign has secured the Hugh Kelly Cup but there has definitely been more transition than they forecasted when setting off on their latest run. “We’ve been in transition a small bit, we’ve had a turnover of players so we have changed, Elias (Kunz) is gone and has been a huge loss. We’ve brought in players like Jack Joyce and Conor Finnucane, it can take a while to gel together, it probably hasn’t fallen our way this year but we still have a Cup final and can get some more silverware at the end of the year”.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Eoghan outlined that there is a bigger onus on him in the absence of their injured players to try lead the way.

“It’s mad seeing the younger players coming in now with the likes of Ryan Mahony and Owen Hadden, you’re trying to stand up in the bigger games because there is certain games where we haven’t stood up.

The Coachford game was one of the low points in my Avenue career, lads will be looking to us in the bigger games to stand up, get that crucial goal or that crucial block”.

Absenteeism has also led to the 26-year-old featuring more on the left wing than his familiar spot in the engine room of centre midfield.

“I will do what I can for the team, I don’t think I’ve been particulary great on the wing but you can only do what you can do”.

Of the finalists, he feels Avenue come into Saturday’s decider with a bit more energy. “It’s been about recovery since Saturday’s semi-final, I don’t think our game was as difficult as Newmarket’s so you’d hope we’ll be a small bit fresher. We’ll see what the weather is like, that will play a part I think. If it is a nice dry day it will be a more expansive game, a lot of our games with Newmarket tend to be a bit cagey at times, hopefully it will be a bit more expansive than previous games”.

Rivalry between Avenue and Newmarket will add to the occasion of Saturday’s final, the UCC graduate says. “The Avenue vs Newmarket games are why you want to play soccer in Clare, it is the biggest rivalry in Clare in any sport I think because those two teams have been at the top for the last six or seven years. You enjoy the build-up and every Cup final, no matter if it is your first or tenth, you get the same nerves and same buzz off them so hopefully

we’ll be in the winning camp this year”.

A solicitor with Sheehan Law in Dublin, ‘Tiny’ has been clocking up the miles as part of his sporting commitments since February.

“We’ll have one less commute with the soccer from next weekend on.

I’ve been doing it since February and I’m not going to lie, it is difficult...but we’ve a few boys up there from Barefield so if you’ve a couple in the car it makes it a bit easier”.

Podcasts help to pass the journey while he will be joined over the coming months by St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield teammates Charlie Hannan and Sam Costelloe for “the long aul trek” in the near future.

“Crime World is good... the Independent podcast is decent too,” he said of his recommended podcasts.

After this weekend, his focus will revert to St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield with Donagh Vaughan’s side eager to build on their run to last year’s Clare SFC final. “The focus is on Saturday but then it will switch to playing Ennistymon in the final round of the Cusack Cup to stay up”.

Noonan brings eye of tiger to Newmarket defence TADHG Noonan has played his part in welding a formidable defensive anchor with Harvey Cullinan for Newmarket Celtic, writes Páraic McMahon.

Last May, Newmarket Celtic won their 20th Clare Cup and Tadhg’s first when they defeated Tulla Utd 1-0 courtesy of a goal by their talisman Eoin Hayes. Saturday sees them return to Frank Healy Park, this time to take on rivals Avenue Utd. Tadhg feels they are in a stronger spot following on from their recent league success which marked his first time winning a Premier Division medal. “It was important to win it this year, we put a stamp on it to say we’re still here,” he notes.

Cup finals can make players jittery but that won’t be an issue for Tadhg. “I’m more nervous about this interview than I am for a match to be honest,” he told The Clare Echo.

Composure and discipline will be key to determining who lifts the Cup on Saturday, the 21-year-old maintained. “Hopefully things go right, I don’t think we have much to fear”.

He added, “It will be a feisty one on Saturday, if we can keep it intact and not go down to ten men I think we will be alright”.

Having went 3-0 ahead in last Friday’s semi-final win over Bridge Utd, they didn’t do things the easy way and had to settle for a 4-3 victory. Noonan felt the sending off of striker Darragh Leahy for a second bookable offence did put them under pressure. “We conceded two late goals which we wouldn’t be proud of but we got the win which was the main thing”.

Lessons can be learned from suspensions with Tadhg still lamenting his absence from the Munster Junior Cup semi-final defeat to Aisling Annacotty due to a red card received in the last eight.

“I thought we could have made it to the final, I missed the semi-final which was disappointing but it was my own fault I suppose so it is a learning curve”.

A welder with Superior Trade Frames, Tadhg admits his manager Alan Gough has an old school style of coaching. “I’ve never met a fella like him, he is up your hole about everything... Alan could lose it sometimes but he has a right to”.

Called up to the Newmarket Celtic A team at the age of 16, he missed the following season after breaking his ankle. Having featured as a striker for large spells of the 2024/25 campaign, Tadhg has nailed down his spot as centre-half and has played some of his best football at this level under Gough.

Part of the Ryan family, one of the great sporting clans in the parish in Newmarket-on-Fergus, his time up front has made him a better defender, Tadhg believed. “From playing up top I’m used to what players go off and making their runs, I’m used to seeing that but there isn’t too much of a difference, you put your heart on the line when you are in centre half”. He also has learned what can annoy a striker, “I try stamping or whatever I can do to put them off a little bit”.

Making matters that bit easier for Noonan is getting to line out beside Harvey Cullinan, formerly of Sheffield Utd’s U18 and U23 sides. “He

is a good friend of mine, it makes the world an easier place playing alongside Harvey, I’ve never played with a player like him or as technically gifted, he makes it look easy”.

Behind them is Shane Cusack, one of the top junior soccer goalkeepers in the country who Tadhg has watched at close quarters all his life, given their proximity as neighbours in Avondale. “I grew up watching him and the way he works from living beside him, he is the best keeper in Clare”.

Newmarket Celtic boss eyes first Clare double since 2020

A CHANCE to win a first league and cup double since 2020 is on the line for Newmarket Celtic when they cross swords with fierce rivals Avenue Utd this Saturday.

Whether it's a Cup final or league outing, every game is treated with importance for Newmarket Celtic according to manager Alan Gough.

In his first season in charge, Alan has led them to an unbeaten campaign in the Premier Division to win the league for the first time since 2023. They are eyeing back-to-back Cup titles, a feat which would also see them win the double for the first time since 2020.

“It is a game we are looking forward to," Alan told The Clare Echo. "We’ve had a really good season this year, we’ve managed to turn around an eight or nine point deficit on Avenue from last year. I always speak about the players and the application from this season which has been fantastic. From the

coaches, our strength and conditioning and our goalkeeper coach Johnny Ryan, because we played a game this year when Shane Cusack was away - Dermot Gannon went in goals and got injured, Gary Cusack came in then and did tremendously well - so we’re blessed to have a really good staff but the credit goes to the players for the work, application and attitude this year”.

When he took on the role of manager, one of Gough’s immediate targets was to bridge the gap with last year’s league champions Avenue Utd, which they successfully did. They finished the league with 44 points, seven ahead of second place Bridge Utd and eight ahead of third place Avenue.

Even though he is a close friend of Pat McDaid, owner of Ennis Carpets who sponsor the Clare Cup, Alan admitted that they didn’t set any objectives so far as the Cup was concerned at the beginning of the season. “I never really thought about it to be honest with you, I set

our standard about trying to close the gap with the teams ahead of us which we have managed to do this year.

This is really for the fans but we’re in a final now and we want to have a good crack at it, hopefully we will come out victorious”.

Reaching the semi-finals of the Munster Junior Cup where they came up short against Aisling Annacotty was a run that has also served Newmarket well. “I think anytime we’ve gone out this year we’ve given our best. I’ve said to the lads at the start of the year that they have to represent themselves, this club and this community, without question they have done it tremendously well. I am incredibly proud, I am managing a junior club and we are getting the absolute maximum out of these players”.

In Friday’s Cup semi-final against Bridge Utd, they managed to scrape the all-important victory on a score of 4-3 after leading 3-0. Alan admits they need to improve their game man-

agement, noting that injury time ran on much longer than expected. For Newmarket it was a more competitive semi-final compared to Avenue Utd who ran riot against Sporting Ennistymon with an 8-1 win.

Having managed teams in Galway, Mayo, Longford along with playing stints across the water with Fulham and Portsmouth, the 55-year old quipped, “You make me sound like a journeyman” before pointing out that the players have bought into his methods, helping them to go within 90 minutes of a Clare double. “The way I was brought up, I am a bit old school. I believe every game you have to give everything you have. I come back to the shirt and how we have to represent this community, we can’t be half-arsed, we have to be all in. I’m all in and the players are all in, we have been all year. Some of the key words we spoke about this year were integrity, honesty and enthusiasm, the group have responded magnificently to that this year”.

Captain Gunning carves out his own piece of Clare hurling history

CLARE had to back up their minor success of 2023 by adding an U20 All-Ireland and Munster double to the collection, inspirational captain Eoghan Gunning has said.

Gunning became the first Clare man to captain his side to All-Ireland glory at minor and U20 level, a feat he has also completed in Munster, when leading the county to glory in Sunday’s U20 decider against Galway.

On the field, he sets the example with his hurling from the front approach, his knack for claiming the sliotar in rucks and bursting forward sends the Clare crowd into full voice.

Off the field, his powerful speeches mark out him as a leader well beyond his nineteen years. Accepting the James Nowlan Cup from GAA President, Jarlath Burns a man also known for his oration skills, in Ardan O Riain of FBD Semple Stadium, Eoghan spoke superbly in Irish and English while describing it as the “honour of my lifetime” to captain his county and this group of players.

As he made his way back to the dressing room in Thurles, Eoghan spoke with The Clare Echo about his pride for all involved in their latest success. “It is so hard to describe it really but I’m so proud of everyone, on days like this you just have to admire the effort that has gone in over the whole year, the way we honoured that jersey was unbelievable”.

He may lead the side into battle but the Broadford clubman stressed there’s plenty of leaders within their dressing room. “It is an honour but we’ve so many different leaders in our group that have stepped up on different occasions, it is all about the group, we have savage stuff and we can always draw on different performances from over the years and setbacks from over the years, the focal points for us has been the really tough work”.

Clare’s full-back line where Eoghan has been joined by Robert Loftus, Matthew O’Halloran and Joe Casey has been the side’s strongest and most consistent throughout the championship. On Sunday, O’Halloran was tasked with marking Jason Rabbitte who is part of the Galway senior side while Aaron Niland’s addition also prompted a rejig in defence and not long after his arrival both Niland and Gunning picked up yellow cards.

Big names do not faze the Banner backs, Gunning stated. “We couldn’t care less who we are marking, we do our match-ups and we can take huge confidence from the performances we’ve put in, we’ve got certain matchups right so we’re just delighted”.

Adding to the collection of medals was an important goal, the Mary Immaculate College first year student admitted. “Winning the minor was great, but where would you be winning the minor if you didn’t win an

U20 alongside it. You can take great confidence going forward from winning any bit of silverware. If you look at our whole year, you can take great confidence [going forward] from the way we have worked and just built nicely”.

He added, “It shows that tough mindset. It was said to us at the start of the year that we were All-Ireland minor champions from 2023, but we didn’t read into that at all. We were just going to leave no stone unturned in the winter. We did savage, savage work. We have worked so hard over the last three years”.

Since getting over the line with the Brian O’Connell managed minors of 2023, these young Clare hurlers have not rested on their laurels. “There was a clear pathway put in front of us, as well. When we came in with the U20s the first year in 2024, the goal was the same: to get over the line in Munster. It is extremely hard and it took us three years to get there.

You see all the players today, they have all come through development squads and developed at different rates. I’ve often referenced Thomas O’Connor. He was never on a development squad. He sprung in the last couple of weeks. In the Harty Cup, he showed well. He was putting his hand up in the Clare Cup. He was thrown in [at full-forward] and there was absolutely no fear of him.”

Graham a guiding force in Clare’s U20 glory

A FIRST year on the Clare U20 panel was a dream for teenager Graham Ball which was capped off by winning titles at All-Ireland and provincial level as he left Semple Stadium with no regrets.

His vision and smart-decision making on the ball was clear to see with the Clare minor side that he captained last year but Graham brought this to the fore and more as he seamlessly adapted to the U20 ranks to play a starring role in their All-Ireland and Munster success.

To see their commitment result in success at the highest level was very rewarding for the St Flannan’s College student. “It is hard to put it into words, it is an unbelievable feeling, winning Munster was a class feeling but winning an All-Ireland tops it every single day. We’ve a savage group of lads, it has been a group effort and it paid off”.

Clare’s first All-Ireland at the grade, the county won its fifth and it arrived in Terence Fahy’s fifth season as U20 manager. “I know these things don’t come around too often, I was involved with the minors last year and it was heart-breaking in the final, we know we didn’t play as well as we’d have liked in that final so there was regrets, today I wanted to have no regrets going out on that pitch, try our best and thankfully it worked”.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, the eighteen year old admitted that his focus when joining the panel this year was to show what he could offer. “I know I was young so you can’t be expecting too much especially when lads are two or three years older than you and have been there for the last two years. I was trying my best in training every single day and trying to improve, thankfully I did and Terence, Andy and Tomás gave me a chance, thankfully I took it”.

win against Limerick clearly demonstrated just what he can do, his possession count was high as he stuck with his motto of getting involved as quick as he can. “I came in at half time against Limerick, in fairness they just gave me the message to ‘play like you’ve been in training and there will be no fear of you’, thankfully I did that and I started the next few games, I dropped back to the bench against Cork but thankfully I had an impact coming on and it stood to me again,” he recalled.

There was a sense of vindication for Ball following on from losing last year’s All-Ireland minor final to leave Semple Stadium this time with a winners medal.

“Twelve months later writing the wrongs from last year. Last year’s minor group was exceptional, we know we didn’t play as well as we’d like but it was a savage grouo of lads, I loved every minute of it and I loved every minute of this year with this group of lads, two special groups. It is an unbelievable feeling to win an All-Ireland medal, it is what you dream of as a young lad winning All-Ire-

Moylan makes the most of ‘special days’ in saffron and blue

by Páraic McMahon MORE NOTED for scoring the odd inspirational point from wing back as opposed to goals, Jamie Moylan landed a killer blow when helping Clare’s U20 to All-Ireland success over the June Bank Holiday weekend.

After Paul Rodgers won back possession for Clare in their own half of the field, wing back Moylan then produced a powerful run which saw him show the smarts to bounce the sliotar on the ground before controlling it on his hurley and the move ended up with him rifling the sliotar beyond Chris Callanan bringing Banner supporters to their feet to shake Semple Stadium.

Terence’s troops offer fresh hope for future of Clare hurling

AT JUST the right time, Clare hurling now has a cohort of talent threatening and promising to reinvigorate an ageing senior side.

FBD Semple Stadium was drenched in hope and optimism as Clare supporters among the 9,103 attendance of Sunday’s All-Ireland U20 final left the venue and they did so in high spirits following the commanding 4-20 2-16 victory.

Not that some of the senior stars are finished by any means but there is always a need for fresh talent and the production line with Terence Fahy at the helm certainly gives confidence that a new generation of stars are capable of making the step-up.

Success in winning the All-Ireland and Munster minor championships of 2023 didn’t go to the heads of this team that backed it up winning the U20 equivalents this season.

If they can repeat the dose in terms of maintaining their focus and commitment to the cause, then their Clare careers are only really beginning as Fahy outlined.

“If you go back to 2009 and look at that team, you back to the 2012, 2013, 2014 teams, look at the power Clare hurling got off those. We struggled for so many years to win that title, the onus is on these lads, they didn’t fatten after winning a minor All-Ireland and hopefully they won’t fatten after winning the U20, we have a great senior team with great leaders but they are coming into the end years of their career and we need up and coming players to replace them down the line, if they can do that with All-Ireland medals in their pockets well that gives an extra bit of oomph for the county so it is a great result for Clare”.

Delivering All-Ireland and Munster titles has been a timely lift for Clare hurling. “In 2023

we won the minor All-Ireland and in 2024 we won the senior All-Ireland so the one we needed to win was the U20 All-Ireland, we have won it in 2026, it is a great reflection on the county as a progressive hurling county, the unity of purpose and driving the thing on. We’re all Clare men, we’re so proud of the way they represented our group and that is the biggest thing, the Clare supporters really responded to that, you could see it when Jamie (Moylan) scored the goal, it was a big moment”.

Praising the entire panel for their efforts, Terence spoke of how you could only but be proud of them. He noted that tough provincial campaigns can often take it out of teams. “It wasn’t a given that we brought huge fire to every other performance through the championship and the All-Ireland series is a different level, you can often win your provincial but it doesn’t always follow through into the All-Ire-

land series, that was the challenge there for them to bring it to the biggest day. I think the two and a half week break was important, we were running on fumes in the Munster championship going week on week off, they really relished the break, we took them down to bring them back up and they were excellent”.

Goals from Thomas O’Connor on the third and thirty fifth minute along with majors from Jamie Moylan on the half hour mark and Marco Cleary’s green flag on thirty seven minutes all provided huge energy, Fahy acknowledged. “The first half goals were massive, the first one settled us against the wind, the one before half time was a huge trigger moment, it was one of the few breaking balls we won off a puckout, we were struggling on our puckout, then Jamie took it on and took it on, the stadium shook when he scored, we had such immense support today, it was a huge boost going in at half

time”.

To score 2-2 in the first eight minutes of the second half gave Clare a foothold that they never relinquished, the secondary school teacher at St Joseph’s Tulla outlined. “It was new territory for us, we never had a gap like that in a match all year, it was great we had it today. We were on those breaks today and the breaking balls, we got big scores at key moments, it was a powerful end to the season”.

Nervy and tight finishes have been par for the course with Clare’s U20s this season but as the game entered the final ten minutes and James Hegarty managed to save an Aaron Niland free, Terence’s troops led by eleven points. “It was the most unusual final ten minutes, we are normally used to buckets of stress but it was a credit to the players, they just brought it, they were so smooth and fresh, they were so slick”.

Whitegate’s Fahy added,

“We were never worried about winning ugly, winning tight matches and winning them ugly is a great quality too, I did feel as the season went on and the weather got better and we got into stadiums that the graph would go up, athletically they are very sharp and fresh, it was great to see the final day ending like that”.

Emerging from the dressing room, saturated having been sprayed by ecstatic players, Terence told The Clare Echo that it was a special place to be. “That is the best of it, we’ve thirty eight players in there and they all had an immense part in it, we’ve two cups inside there and the moments inside the dressing room are the special times because it will get busier from now on, it is a special achievement for a special group, they are a great group of players, they made their mark on the field”.

Minor run will stand to Clare - Hayes

by Seamus Hayes A SEASON in which they played fifteen matches, eight championship, five in the Leinster league and two challenges, ended in heart-breaking fashion for the Clare minor footballers on Saturday afternoon.

Level with their Northern opponents at 1-10 each as four minutes of ‘added time’ were signalled, Clare bowed out of the Electric Ireland All-Ireland minor tier two championship for the Paul McGirr cup at the quarter final stage losing 1-12 1-8.

“I would love if we had got over the line because of the effort that the lads have put in all season and in this tie. We are hugely disappointed but all credit to the lads, they fought to the end”, commented team manager Joe Hayes shortly after the game.

“I am extremely proud of the lads for the battle they showed throughout this game and throughout the season. They showed great character in the way they bounced back from their loss to Waterford in the first game and again from their loss to Cork in phase two, the amount of games they have played this season will surely stand to them going forward”, the Lissycasey clubman told The Clare Echo.

Hayes acknowledged that

“Down missed a lot and they clearly had a bit of work done on us as they had a player sitting back in front of Liam Keane and they also pressed up on our short game”.

“Look, it’s disappointing to have lost out but these lads have shown great character throughout the season and they will benefit from their involvement”, concluded the manager.

Clare need to kick on following opening round win to secure quarter-final berth

by Seamus Hayes A WINNING start in the All-Ireland intermediate ladies football championship has put Clare in high spirits.

Clare began their campaign on Sunday with a 4-12 2-12 home victory over Wexford.

Megan Downes, Ellie Hanrahan, Lauren Conway and Fidelma Marrinan all scored 1-1 while Chloe Moloney with five points to her name was the side’s top scorer.

Speaking after Sunday’s victory over Wexford Clare manager Graham Shine was full of praise for his charges. “Championship is for winning. We were flying in the first half and in the third quarter but a bit of fatigue set in in the fourth quarter. That’s our sixth game in seven weeks, we have been on the road for the last seven weeks and there was a bit of fatigue there at the end. We will take it handy now this week and we will head to Laois next week and hopefully get another two points on the board”.

Collecting a first round left Shine optimistic Clare will be back in the

quarter-finals. “We would hope that today’s win will give us a quarter final place but we still want to keep winning, and grow the culture in the group that we are hard to beat.

It proved it there coming down the shoot with 4 minutes to go and we got the goal. that’s a great sign of character in the team and I am just absolutely delighted for those girls that had the jersey on today. They are proud Clare women and they did the county proud today”.

An impressive style of play was evident in Clare’s opening half. “We have worked hard on that style of play. My philosophy is let the ball do the work and I have told the girls to play football. We are giving them a licence to play football, it was unbelievable the ball that was going in in the first half today but we couldn’t last it for the 60 minutes, girls were fatigued. Girls came in from the bench and made a difference”.

Making a welcome return to the county side was Fidelma Marrinan. “I have been in contact with Fidelma all the time. She went off and furthered her career in Dublin and when I made

the call to her last month to come in she accepted and has trained hard”.

Shine added, “we have been here last year and the year before in quarter finals and haven’t got over them, I am just hoping that this bunch will get the result next week and bring a quarter final back here and go on further in the competition”.

Shannon are JB Carr champions

SHANNON will represent Clare in the JB Carr (seniors) competition this year having secured victory over Woodstock in the Clare final on Wednesday last.

Trailing 2-3 after the first leg in Shannon, the Woodstock team needed victory last week on their home course and they achieved that emerging with a 3-2 win and this tied up the final at 5-5 This led to a play off where Shannon won on the 20th their pairing of John Collins and William O’Brien overcoming the Woodstock pairing of Declan Coote and Sean Williams.

Thunder and a downpour led to the suspension of play for a period during Wednesday’s game.

East Clare Golf Club: There was a huge turnout for captain T.J. McNamara’s prize at the weekend at East Clare golf club.

T.J’s prize to the ladies was played for on Sunday and was won by Maureen Clune (33) with 41 points, one ahead of Deirdre Tuohy (35) with third place filled by Maria Kennedy (29) with 38 points. The gross was won by Siobhan Shanahan (15) with 20.

Winner of the captain’s prize to the men was Ray McInerney from Paul Hayes with Teddy O’Hanlon in third place. The gross was won

by Jack Whelan while the past captain’s prize was won by Brendan Magill.

The category winners were

Finn Looney, Brian Stritch and Michael Hayes.

Pat Fitzgerald won the captain’s prize to the senior men from Ger Hogan with Jerry O’ Brien in third place. Mike Whelan won the gross.

Conor O’Brien won the nearest the pin prize while the long drive winner was Sean McCarthy.

Paul Skelly won the junior’s prize with the gross won by Cathal Rochford.

Winners of the ladies Wednesday’s competition were Breda Reid, Brid Hayes and Kay Grimes from Mary Hogan, Mary Farrell, Pauline Nugent and Breda McCarthy with third place filled by Evelyn Skehan, Siobhan Mulcahy and Ann O’ Grady.

Last week’s senior men’s competition winners were Nick Obolewicz, Colm Kelly and Brendan Moloney from Jim Willis, John Nihill and Jackie McHugh with third place filled by Brian Corry, Tadhg Murphy and Jim Bradley.

Dromoland Golf Club: It was captain Seamus Cusack’s prize weekend at Dromoland when huge numbers played across the men’s, ladies and junior sections.

The men’s competition which included a 9 hole play off for the leading qualifiers on Sunday evening, was won

by Aodhan Wynne with 104 and he won on a countback from Patrick McCoy with third place filled by Niall Geraghty on 105. They were followed by Ivan Kerins on 106, Alan O’Flanagan on 107, Michael Lally on 109, John Casey on 109, Daire Kelly on 110 and Paul English on 110.

Ross Kenny with 73 won the gross while the category for handicappers 20 and over was won by Damien Lafferty with 72. Bo Murphy won the junior category with 76 while the student winner was Dylan O’Brien with 75.

The past captain’s category was won by Niall Cannon with 72 while the guests section was won by Barry O’Connor with 36 points from Eamonn Healy with 33 points.

Wednesday’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition was won by Deirdre Cooney with 36 points with Siobhan Doohan second with 33 points.

The President’s (Mary McNamara) prize will be played for on the weekend of July 4/5, the lady captain’s (Margaret Nash) prize will be played for on July 11 and 12 while club captain Pat Barry’s prize will be played for on July 31, August 1 and 2.

Friday night’s Galway card featured two stake finals over the 350 yards sprint trip with the finals of both the Barking Buzz App Novice 350 and the Bet On The Tote N2 deciders the twin features on the card which also featured the semi-finals of the Book Your Trials On Line A5 525 Yards Stake.

As the traps rose for the Bet on the Tote N2 Final, Rockmount Kismet was first to break rank with the striped jacketed Brickhill Dan moving inwards to join issue as they raced on the long trek towards the opening bend with Brickhill Dan moving inwards the outside was then left free for the Brid McMahon of Co-
