A VIOLENT incident after an U15 football game in West Clare has been described as “atrocious”. An U15 fixture between Kilrush/ Killimer and Lissycasey descended into chaos at Captain Tubridy Park in Kilrush when referee John O’Connell was allegedly attacked and knocked to the ground by a member of the Lissycasey management following the game. A Garda investigation is underway, after they received reports of incidents where a male in his fifties and a male youth sustained injuries. Clare GAA are likely

to have a heavy hand when it comes to issuing suspensions in the case. Chairman of Clare GAA, Kieran Keating stated that they will not be waiting for any civil action to be completed before imposing any sanction. He described the incident as “a bitter step backwards”. Chairman of Lissycasey GAA, Eamonn Finnucane said they were “shocked” by what happened. “What happened would not be in our nature at all. We would not condone what happened. We apologise to John and
his family, to Clare GAA and to all the referees. We will accept whatever sanctions will come from this”. Rory Hickey Clare GAA’s referees administrator described the behaviour at Monday’s game as “atrocious”. He said the CCCC will await O’Connell’s match report but expected a strong punishment would be issued. “It can’t be tolerated, what signal does it send out if the County Board don’t take action on this”.
