UTURE tragedies on the M18 must be avoided following a safety review, according to a Clare councillor whose cousin died following an accident on an M18 junction. East Clare Councillor Pat Hayes insists that a safety review of junctions on the M18, which have been initiated by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), must lead to the prevention of further road tragedies in the county. Cllr Hayes referred to the high amount of accidents at the junctions and felt the possibility of an Ennis Date Centre being located close to junction 13 necessitated “an overhaul”. In a letter to the local authority, TII confirmed that they have “initiated a safety review of junctions 12, 13 and 14 on the M18 as requested”. Prior to Christmas, a cousin of the local politician died following an accident on an M18 junction. It is another in a list of fatalities and Cllr Hayes is determined to stop such tragedies reoccurring. “It’s close to my heart but it is an issue that I’ve raised previously. “What we need to do is avoid any more tragedies and I’ll be fighting this case through to when we get a resolution that people will be happy with”.
